Two of my first finds and they've always stumped me. Could they actually be a type of drill?
I never could convince myself these were Guildfords, but nothing else seems remotely close.
Friends have found similar points locally.
Surface find in a plowed field. This is an often occupied area, near a tributary of the Greenbrier River in East Central West Virginia, near VA border. Other points found in the area range in time from Savannah River (Middle to Late Archaic) all the way up to Madison (Mississippian).
Could they actually be a type of drill? Very curious to learn more!

2023.06.10 17:11 autotldr Zelenskyy says 'counteroffensive, defensive actions' taking place in Ukraine

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 78%. (I'm a bot)
KYIV, Ukraine - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that counteroffensive and defensive actions were underway against Russian forces, asserting that his top commanders were in a "Positive" mindset as their troops engaged in intense fighting along the front line.
The Ukrainian leader, at a Kyiv news conference alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, responded to a question about Russian President Vladimir Putin's comment a day earlier that Ukraine's counteroffensive had started - and Ukrainian forces were taking "Significant losses."
Zelennsky said that "The counteroffensive, defensive actions are taking place in Ukraine. I will not speak about which stage or phase they are in."
Trudeau, the first foreign leader to visit Ukraine since devastating floods caused by a breach in a Dnieper River dam, offered up monetary, military and moral support for Ukraine.
On Saturday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says he wants to continue speaking with Putin - whose order for Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been criticized by many Western leaders - and plans to do so again "Soon." Scholz has spoken several times by phone with Putin since the invasion.
The chancellor said the basis for a "Fair peace" between Russia and Ukraine is the withdrawal of Russian troops.

2023.06.10 13:35 willmagnify Notes on “A Tale of Two Cities: the development of early Arhada city states (0-500 AD)”, Part 2

Note to self 93,
Made it back to the library. "A Tale of two cities" was still there waiting for me, thankfully (the beauty of having niche interests!). I moved on to the chapters speaking directly about the two case studies and copied the most interesting passages.
These were the most noteworthy parts on Kamābarha:
1. Kamābarha – Establishment and growth
Though there is still a certain degree of debate, scholars speculate that Kamābarha is the earliest of Arhada cities. It would be expected, considering its proximity to a great number of Middle Pottery sites and its strategic location at the intersection of the Great lake and the southern basin, offering opportunities for a higher degree of cultural interaction – which inevitably leads to cultural maturity.
Indeed, the rise of Kamābarha has left tangible markings in the archaeological record: the construction of Kamābarha III, the layer that first gives us some indication of a level of state control over the region (in the form of contract tablets and other material remains, symbolism associated with governance and a mature elite power, as well as the sheer size of its palace and granary) has been unanimously placed in the 6th century BD. For the purposes of this text, we are interested in understanding what the city looked like before and immediately after that date, in order to understand its peculiar character, as well as the ingredients that brought its success.
[...]
Kamābarha's wealth was chiefly in its copper reserves. The stretch of land between the Great lake and the southern Tritonean lakes, traversed by what the Arhada referred to as Green River, contained plentiful mineral deposits, ranging from pure copper, silver, and zinc-contaminated copper, otherwise known as "natural brass". This naturally occurring alloy was perhaps Kamābarha greatest export, although the metallurgical culture of Formative Tritonea was rather scant, and most uses for these metals were either decorative or for the production of cold-worked arrowheads. These items are found as far west as early Hortens sites and as far south as the Aluwa. They were either transported as fully formed arrowheads or as plates which were then worked locally by the importers. Within the confines of Kamābarha and its environs, however, we can find a higher ratio of copper artisanal goods and artistic objects than weapons: an indication of a lack of pressure to militarise. Brass is found on the decorations of Kamābarha's palace, in the form of mirrors, bracelets, jewellery. The oldest example of a painted copper plate – a typical Arhadan decorative items consisting of a flat copper surface covered on both sides with oil paint, was found in Kamābarha III. Chemical analyses confirm that what appears today as a simple oxidised copper disk was in fact coloured with bright pecan oil based paints.
That is not to say that the production of military gear, or, indeed, warfare, was inexistent. The dispersal of arrowheads along the north shore of the Great Lake gives us a clear indication that Kamābarha's influence was not based only on agricultural wealth or cultural influence: some amount of force was indeed employed in the creation of its political network.
[...]
2. Kamābarha –Internal Politics
Kamābarha's political structure was the natural evolution of the typical characters of pre-formative Arhada centres, as discussed earlier. At the top of the hierarchy were the "famous", as the nobility was known, and below was everyone else. Tracing the rise to power of the "famous" clans is no easy feat, but its clear that, through generations of wealth accumulation, a set of dynamics which allowed the flourishing of a restricted group of landowners culminated in a clear class divide between this group of hereditary leaders and the manpower contributing to their wealth.
At the time of Kamābarha III it seems like four or five clans shared the spaces of the palatial district, with the number dropping to three, either through the merger of two clans or the extinguishing of the families, in the 7th century. This has been suggested by the symbolism prevalent on funerary urns found within the site, with each clan being associated with a specific symbol: in early Kamābarha III we find the tortoise, the heron, the parrot, and two variations of the burning house motif – one flanked by two pecan trees, the other standing on its own. It's unknown whether the last two represented a single clan or two separate ones. As the period progressed, however, we find that later urns are only marked with heron, parrot and burning house logograms. These three clans probably included a great deal of people, between the matriarchs, the leaders and a third class of non-inheriting clan members.
Power was seemingly based on seniority, passing from the son of the eldest matriarch, who would hold leadership within the village, to the next; his second in line – either a brother or the son of the second-senior matriarch – would act as a representative. Note how power passes from the matriarchs, and not from the men themselves: it's the eldest mother that produces the city's leader, but that does not mean that the leader is necessarily the senior nobleman.
[...]
One aspect of this system that is currently under debate is whether the wealth of the four (later three) clans was pooled together or if they maintained some additional independent wealth: it would seem like that was the case. It is now believed that the Ibosso hadân (marriage vessel) was treated as a person's independent wealth: each clan would put the wealth of their Ibosso hadân together with the other members of their clan, but separate from the common wealth of the city; non-inheriting clan members would keep theirs separate shares. All other goods – the herds, the harvest from the paddies, and items produced by the clan for the treasury – were handled communally by the Council of the matriarchs and the two male leaders: the internal leader, or "First Leader", handling issues pertaining to the administration of the city at large, and an external one, a "Second Leader", whose duties involved diplomatic journeys to client villages and the collection of payments.
A diagram of power relations in Kamābarha, for reference. I was impressed by how mobile social classes were, even within such a hierarchical society. There's an entire chapter dedicated to this:
2.b Kamābarha –Lower Classes and social mobility
Overall, two other social classes were recognised aside from the members of the famous clans; the commoners and the clanless. The commoners formed the bulk of the population: there could have been anything between one and two hundred minor clans inhabiting Kamābarha, most of which were farmers and horticulturalists, but many of whom were moving towards specific arts and crafts as the quality of life increased due to the higher level food security provided by the state. The men of this social class would be called for military duty by the leadership in times of war – when the time came to exact payment by force from a client city, for example – but all evidence points to this being a rather rare occasion. Clans mostly contributed to the palace economy, in the form of corvée labour (wherein each clan had to provide a fixed number of workers for the paddy) or the production of specialised goods. Because of this, having a clan could prove to be expensive, and when those payments could not be met, clanhood would be revoked: this gave rise to the Clanless, a more generalistic group comprised of those without the means to provide work to the palace as an organised force as well as all prisoners of war, foreigners or recent immigrants that have not yet entered the social fabric of the city. These people worked the paddies in exchange for wages, paid in the form of zizania or tobacco, and would be the first group to which the most labour intensive jobs were assigned.
That is not to say that people statically belonged to one class or other; People of a famous clan could intermarry with commoners – this was somewhat rare, as the preference was to marry within one of the other famous families or with the upper class of the other cities, both client and independent. But in times of need, when there weren't suitable partners of the same generation, the Matriarchs who regulated upper class unions, could allow a commoner to enter their group. Another means of social betterment for commoners was being chosen as a favourite at the palace: when an artist or artisan – commonly a woman, but sometimes a man as well – was considered to be highly skilled by a member of the four inner clans, they could chose to sponsor them, sacrificing personal wealth to allow them to live at the palace, where they would continue their craft for the benefit of the palace's treasury. Within the palace, Favourites were then allowed to marry and reside until their death: their children, growing with the children of the famous clans, often grew up to be considered suitable marriage partners. The Clanless had ways to climb the social ladder as well: becoming a Kabaima, a helper, for the inhabitants palace was considered to be an honourable post, the highest honour for someone without a Clan. They were similarly allowed to live and marry within the palace, and where often given some payment for their descendants at the end of their service, when they reached old age or died.
In an intermediary position the commoners and the famous where the non-inheriting children of the latter. The sons and daughters of the men of the clan were not included in the matrilineal passage of power and had to find themselves a position in society: the men were often encouraged to join the "high guard", responsible for the private property of the clan within the city, and both men and women could become "Shrine keepers", organising religious functions and overseeing the community who took care of the shrine's upkeep. These positions were open to commoners too, but Famous commoners, due to their closeness to the clan (and thus, to leadership), were preferred for this kind of position.
I was fascinated about the "Shrine Keeper" figure, but I could find very little about it. I found this on shrines, though:
5. Kamābarha – Early Tritonean shrines, the rise of an architectural typology:
Within the context of northern Arhada cities, we can see the emergence of a new building type: specialised shrines, independent of the palace district. These prove to be an evolution of the domestic type: the courtyard framing a centred, central-plan building was a clear re-elaboration of palaces; the difference however is in the proportions between the single parts. The courtyard building surrounding the shrine proper, now a mere framing device, grew narrower and shorter, while the central building acquired prominence, both in size and in height. The central structure contained one large square room where votive statuettes, offerings and precious materials were gifted from people honouring the spirits to whom the shrine was dedicated. Because early shrines were made of wood, we have little direct information regarding their appearance, for which we need to employ pictorial and sculptural sources (clay models of shrines are a common pottery item, used for votive purposes). It has been proposed that early shrines were often rebuilt as the object of devotion changed according to the needs of the city – it's believed that this rebuilding of the shrine often corresponded with the promotion of a new Shrine Keeper. Eventually, shrines would be built in more durable materials, making rebuilding less practical, but in this early stage the reconstruction of the shrine was probably a ritual occurrence.
[...]
It must be noted that shrines had their way of accumulating wealth, through the management of the offerings given by the devout: some shrines in Kamābarha had enough to surpass a number of the wealthiest non-famous Clans. Because the appointment to shrines was handled by the council of Matriarchs, however, the Famous Clans always had a way to indirectly handle those resources, through the appointment of a family member.
I copied some more drawings: one is a fascinating scheme of how temple typologies became more and more complex through the ages (though the last example is some 1000 years outside the timeline of the essay) and the other is an axonometric view of temple "E".
I will be briefer on Amadahai, skipping all the things that are shared between the two cities. There are a couple of divergences that I think shed some light on how differently the political environment of the two cities evolved.
1. Amadahai – Establishment and Growth
One key difference between Amadahai and Kamābarha was in their location: while Kamābarha was built along the coast of the Great Lake, Amadahai was founded in a strategic location at the head of the land bridge that closes off most of the small lake Thidorovôdjo from the larger Odjohivôdjo. This thin strip of land was reinforced with rows of paddies on both sides, creating a lush environment for the agricultural production of the urban centre. The warmer climate of Amadahai also provided the locals with a longer growing season, ensuring a higher production of high quality fruits and fruit products – wines, preserves, oil – that would be traded all over Tritonea and beyond. It seems that Amadahai's initial wealth was derived especially from this production and a booming trade of cosmetics in the form of spiced and perfumed oils, the large scale production of pigments such as indigo dye, ochre, and oil paint. It is worth dedicating a few words to this last product: while oil paints, as mixtures of pecan oil and pigments, had been used throughout Arhadan territory for some time (especially within the Southern Pottery School), Amadahai is the first site where the chemical analyses of archeological findings detected the use of hempseed oil – which acts as a better drying oil. Indeed, the high quality of the paintwork in pottery is one of the key feature of the Southern Pottery school, and some examples of painted pots, pipes and oil vessels are still visible today, with several exemplars being held at Newtown's Royal Museum of Horean Archaology. Tobacco was another notable export of the city and its wider political network: its climate was well suited for the cultivation of the leaf which was then carried throughout the lake system.
[...]
Amadahai also served as a centre of agricultural development, with the innovation of at least two very important crops being connected to the site of Amadahai II (contemporary with Kamābarha III). The first is Taraxacum ceratophorum, the wild Tritonean Dandelion, which the Arhada domesticated around the 5th Century, and began to select over the course of the next Centuries to obtain a series of crops we commonly eat to this day. Taraxacum was used for a number of different functions: the roots could be used to create brews, the leaves could be eaten raw, the petals could be crushed into dyes or used as aromatics.
Even more economically important was the creation of the Cattail variant Typha domestica var. lanifera, also called "Southern Cattail" or "Wooly Cattail". The fluff of wild cattails was hard to spin because of the shortness of the strands. As such, hemp-cattail blends started off as a common alternative to either of the pure fibre, softening the roughness of hemp and supplementing the scarcity of workable Typha fibre. Over the years, as cattail-flower fibre goods became more prised for their soft texture, the plant was selected for longer and sturdier fibres, larger heads and shorter stalks. The gathering of the fibre was light enough work to allow for the material to spread even thogh the cattail itself, domesticated from Typha Domingensis, required warmer climates, impeding its spread to the northern half of the Arhada territories in lake Sibozjivôro. This ensured that its cultivation would remain a southern specialty for some time, further ensuring Amadahai's commercial success.
A picture of the Wooly Cattail from the book! I had no idea it was first domesticated there, though thinking about it, it makes sense. I suppose I have to thank the people of Amadahai for the sweater I'm wearing right now. Some notes on politics, then I'll have to leave the library – the old man at the desk is giving me looks.
2. Amadahai – Internal Politics
The key differences in the political structure of early Amadahai can be easily appreciated when ne observes the power structures within its leadership class. Where Kamābarha had four or three leading clans, Amadahai maintains a stable number of six clans.
Amadahai's political diagram for reference.
Because the members of the leading families represent a greater percentage of the city's demography, the leadership of early Amadahai is thought to be less top-heavy: all mothers of the six ruling clans participated in the council and, rather than having a single elder matriarch as the head of the council – as was the case in Kamābarha –, the duties of the council were split between three members, elected by the matriarchs amongst the matriarchs.
The "Speaker" had a similar functions to the senior matriarch of Kamābarha but her role was mostly that of a representative and prima inter pares, rather than a final authority. She was flanked by two peers, equally chosen by the entire council: a "Treasure mother", who acted as a steward for the shared wealth of the clans, and a "Lore mother". The responsibilities of this final figure were perhaps the widest: amongst them was a cereful knowledge of genealogy and the history of Amadahai and all its client cities, the recording of contracts of obeisance and clientele, the approval and arrangement of marriages between members of the Famous clans, as well as the mentorship of younger women who might succeed her. While the Speaker of the council evidently held the most outwardly active role, the Lore Mother, in lieu of her deep knowledge, wisdom and powerful responsibilities, was treated with the most respect amongst the three.
If we look at the political role of men, we can see that even their division of power was more egalitarian than in Kamābarha: while we can still notice a clear division between First Leader and Second Leader, in a similar fashion to what we see in the northern city, we find that the second leader does not act independently in matters of war, being assisted instead by a war council formed of all the adult men of the clan. This speaks to Amadahai's deeper martial culture, born of a more conflictual relationship with its southern neighbours. The war council culminated in the creation of a sort of military elite – hunting and engaging in sporting culture during times of peace and commanding forces of commoners and clansless people in times of war. This is visible in the developement of specialised weapons (in Amadahai II we see the first depictions of recurve self bows in pictographs, pottery and sculpture) as well as an increase in arrowhead production dated from this period. There is current debate over whether the "Famous commoner" class could join this group, but the consensus seems to be that while they could become commanders, they did not have the rights to speak or vote in the war council proper.
[...]
While both an elite military role and priesthood were acceptable paths for famous commoners, it seems that these options were barred to all other commoners (another difference from Kamābarha). Again, this is possibly explained by the higher numbers of nobles in the city. A "lower guard", overseeing the protection of everything within the city but outside the palace was manned by commoners, whereas the "higher guard", acting as personal protectors of the Famous men and right hand men in times of war, were chosen exclusively amongst the non-inheriting relatives of the clan. The same goes for the priesthood: men and women of the clan's blood but outside the line of inheritance were invited to oversee the running of a temple: to be appointed, a "famous commoner" would require the backing of a member of one of the clans – usually via their father – and unanimous consent from all the members of the high leadership: the three matriarchs and the two leaders. These postings were diplomatically and economically sensitive: they allowed one of the clans to give an affiliated party a role within the leadership of a shrine, tapping into additional resources for the benefit of their family.
Alright, I guess that's enough research for my thesis – I'm super tired. I might still borrow this book when I can. End of note.

2023.06.10 13:33 VeryBigdDick prompt

Prompt Engineering. This prompt book will help you learn essential building blocks and
all the techniques to master Stable Diffusion.
The secret for generating good images
A well-written prompt consisting of modifiers and a good
sentence structure. We will also show you all types of modifiers and some magic words.
Well-adjusted Stable Diffusion weights. You can
always use the default, but sometimes fine-tuned weights can generate better results.
This will strengthen your ability to
bring your creative dream images to life.

Prompt keyword weighting is supported. You can increase the attention of a keyword but not higher than 1.5.
Use the format (example:weight). By default, words have a coefficient of 1 (example: 0.4), they will have a lower priority.

Attention for words Technique:
Adding "()" in the prompt increases attention to enclosed words, while "[]" decreases it. You can combine multiple modifiers:
- a (word) - increase attention to word by a factor of 1.1
- a ((word)) - increase attention to word by a factor of 1.21 (= 1.1 * 1.1)
- a [word] - decrease attention to word by a factor of 1.1
- a (word:1.5) - increase attention to word by a factor of 1.5
- a (word:0.25) - decrease attention to word by a factor of 4 (= 1 / 0.25)

You can also use a few words in "()" and "[]". You can also use a few words in "()" and "[]".

Also you can still use this structure: (example, example :weight), so the weight will increase for several words at once.
Examples: (grayscale, woodcut:1.2); (((blue hair, floating hair, liquid hair, chromatic aberration))); (rutkowski, artstation:0.8); (masterpiece, best quality:1.4); [cute, volumetric fog]

Please note that to increase or decrease the weight of several words, you need to put a comma between them.

Start by asking a list of questions
  1. Do you want a photo or a painting?
  2. What’s the subject of the photo? Person? An animal or perhaps a landscape?
  3. What details do you want to add?
a) Special Lighting. Soft, ambient, ring light, neon

b) Environment. Indoor, outdoor, underwater, in space

c) Color Scheme. Vibrant, dark, pastel

e) Point of view. Front, Overhead, Side

f) Background. Solid color, nebula, forest

  1. In a specific art style? 3D render, studio ghibli, movie poster
  2. A specific photo type? Macro, telephoto

This is not an all-inclusive list, but will help you get great results when you start.
your prompt crafting journey.
Answer the following questions:
  1. Do you want a photo or a painting? => painting
  2. What’s the subject of the photo? Person. animal, landscape. => a goldendoodle
  3. In a certain camera position? side view, from bottom, from above, from behind => from behind
  4. What details do you want to be added? => suit

a. Special Lighting. Soft, ambient, ring light, neon => natural light

b. Environment. Indoor, outdoor, underwater, in space => in the sky

c. Color Scheme. Vibrant, dark, pastel => with bright colors

  1. In specific art style? 3D render, studio ghibli, movie poster => by Studio Ghibli

The order of words is important
The order and presentation of our desired output is almost as an important aspect as the vocabulary itself. It is recommended to list your concepts explicitly and separately than trying to cramp it into one simple sentence.

The keyword categories are:

  1. Subject: what you want to see in the image, such as a person, an object, a scene, etc.
  2. Medium: the material used to make the artwork, such as illustration, oil painting, realistic, anime, 3D rendering, etc.
  3. Style: the artistic style of the image, such as impressionist, surrealist, pop art, etc.
  4. Artist: the name of a specific artist or multiple artists whose style you want to emulate or blend.
  5. Website: the name of a niche graphic website that aggregates images of a certain genre, such as Artstation or Deviant Art.
  6. Additional details: any other modifiers that can enhance the image, such as sci-fi, stunningly beautiful, dystopian, etc.
  7. Color: the overall color or tone of the image, such as iridescent gold, pastel pink, etc.
  8. Lighting: the effect of light and shadow on the image, such as cinematic lighting, soft lighting, dark, dark shot, bright, etc.

You don’t have to include keywords from all categories. You can use them as a checklist to remind you what could be used.
A negative prompt is a way to tell the neural network what should not be in the image. You can use words or phrases that describe what you want to avoid or exclude from the image. You can also use weights in negative prompt to increase or decrease the effect of certain words.

Generally accepted negative prompt is considered: (deformed, distorted, disfigured:1.3), poorly drawn, bad anatomy, wrong anatomy, extra limb, missing limb, floating limbs, (mutated hands and fingers:1.4), disconnected limbs, mutation, mutated, ugly, disgusting, blurry, amputation.

Realistic negative prompt: overexposed, (deformed iris, deformed pupils, semi-realistic, cgi, 3d, render, sketch, cartoon, drawing, anime:1.3), text, close up, cropped, out of frame, worst quality, low quality, jpeg artifacts, ugly, duplicate, morbid, mutilated, extra fingers, mutated hands, poorly drawn hands, poorly drawn face, mutation, deformed, blurry, dehydrated, bad anatomy, bad proportions, extra limbs, cloned face, disfigured, gross proportions, malformed limbs, missing arms, missing legs, extra arms, extra legs, fused fingers, too many fingers, long neck.

For positive prompt and negative prompt, I have thought of universal keywords - styles. You may not find them in the examples because they are new. Almost every style has a Negative prompt. It is advisable to write it together with positive prompt.

An example of how to use styles if you want to create a cat image in a Professional photo style:
  1. Positive prompt: (dark shot:1.4), 80mm, cat, soft light, sharp, exposure blend, medium shot, bokeh, (hdr:1.4), high contrast, (cinematic, teal and orange:0.85), (muted colors, dim colors, soothing tones:1.3), low saturation, (hyperdetailed:1.2), (noir:0.4)

  1. Negative prompt: neon, (deformed, distorted, disfigured:1.3), poorly drawn, bad anatomy, wrong anatomy, extra limb, missing limb, floating limbs, (mutated hands and fingers:1.4), disconnected limbs, mutation, mutated, ugly, disgusting, blurry, amputation, over saturated

For example, if you want to generate an image of a girl with Natural skin:

  1. Positive prompt: girl, (natural skin texture, hyperrealism, soft light, sharp)

  1. Negative prompt: (cgi:0.9), (deformed, distorted, disfigured:1.3), poorly drawn, bad anatomy, wrong anatomy, extra limb, missing limb, floating limbs, (mutated hands and fingers:1.4), disconnected limbs, mutation, mutated, ugly, disgusting, blurry, amputation, 3d, illustration, cartoon, (doll:0.9)

Here are completely universal styles that you can combine and use in your prompt(I highly recommend using them!):

Professional photo:
  1. Positive prompt for Professional photo: (dark shot:1.4), 80mm, {POprompt}, soft light, sharp, exposure blend, medium shot, bokeh, (hdr:1.4), high contrast, (cinematic, teal and orange:0.85), (muted colors, dim colors, soothing tones:1.3), low saturation, (hyperdetailed:1.2), (noir:0.4)

  1. Negative prompt for Professional photo: neon, {NEprompt}, over saturated

Natural skin:
  1. Positive prompt for natural skin: (natural skin texture, hyperrealism, soft light, sharp)

  1. Negative prompt for natural skin: (cgi:0.9), 3d, illustration, cartoon, (doll:0.9)

Details:
  1. Positive prompt Details: (intricate details:0.9), (hdr, hyperdetailed:1.2)

Gloomy style:
  1. Positive prompt for gloomy style: complex background, stuff in the background, highly detailed, (gloomy:1.3), dark, dimmed, hdr, vignette, grimy, (slate atmosphere:0.8)

  1. Negative prompt for gloomy style: (depth of field:1.3), (bokeh:1.2), (blur), blurred, pink

2023.06.10 12:37 KingofSpain0 Joshua 4

Joshua 4:1-24
When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, 2 “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, 3 and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.”
4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”
8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. 9 Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.
10 Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, 11 and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. 12 The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them. 13 About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for war.
14 That day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.
15 Then the Lord said to Joshua, 16 “Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law to come up out of the Jordan.”
17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.”
18 And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before.
19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. 21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.

Want to share my Experience with you

No DuoQ

Hello Guys. So i don't want to make this a "Guide", i'm just a Diamond Player who want's to share his experience with you. Since the new ADC Items got released a couple of Patches ago i really wanted to try alot of different Builds on Graves. So i went on a 30th Account to try some Builds that came in my Mind. And i had alot of success with Builds i've would never Build on my Main. I thought it's just Macro Diff so it doesn't mean anything but after already a couple of Games i faced only Lobbys with atleast 2 Smurfs on each Team. I kept playing and trying. However i ended up getting higher MMR as on my Main Account. I actually play vs Masters on my Smurf. No DuoQ.
Like i said i just share my experience what felt the best for me and why. I try to keep it short and simple. So this won't be a deep Graves Guide and i don't feel like i'm high Elo enough to do one anyways
Let's started with Runes.
https://preview.redd.it/0ps1n1qi945b1.png?width=737&format=png&auto=webp&s=d468660fb709be4591f755147d755936a0194bab
I think i don't have to explain what they do. I rather explain why i tried them and why i kept them.
Nimbus: if you run to a Gank which is kinda hard to reach you can gapclose or use it to escape.
Celerity + Waterwalking : I prefer to buy Swifty. So if i have my Boots i have i believe 420 MS average and 440 in River. And that's already after your first Item. I think it's super broken
Approach Velocity : You might think this is troll but you can't even imagine how OP this Rune is. Average active Time in my Game was around 80 i would say. So why is good? There are alot of Reasons ! First of all it's super disgusting with Red. Because it works with Red slow. You perma slow meanwhile you perma Ghost if you AA someone. Ain't no way anyone is escaping. Which makes you super strong on Level 3 invades. If you invade and fight someone, what is he gonna do ? Flash away? You have Approach Velocity, phase rush and in worst case Nimbus Cloak. They can Flash away. Doesn't matter you just keep running on them without using anything. Why else is it good? You want to just only gank Lanes with CC Setup. So you also get the boost if like the Nautilus engages. So you get boosted, enemy runs away you throw a smoke it double boost you , your phaserush procs and if needed your nimbus as well. So in like 1 Sec your already average 420 Movespeed goes up to 500. You literally faster than a Singed on crack. You just need to try it out but i'm absolutly in Love with this Rune. And there is one more Reason why and the Reason is Stridebreaker. Just read my recommended Items.
Items
So what i highly Recommend is: Collector -> Swifty -> Trinity or Stridebreaker -> Blackcleaver <-> Mortal Reminder -> Situational
But there is another Option as well i explain later on.
First of all. Why those Items? Well most of the Time, People in SoloQ drafting high Damage like Assasins or Bruiser. The Enemys as well as your Team. Which is important to understand. Because most of the Time your Team doesn't lack on Damage. So this Build gives you everything to Deal insane Damage, surving Assasins, makes you a battle Armor Breaking Monster with Antiheal and high MS. We get into that..
Let's start with your first Item which is super Important for your success. So the Damage on your First Item spike is literally the same.Let's say you are LvL 9 into a average Enemy 1.4k Health with 70 Armor. For example Collector deals average 1.300, youmos 1.250, Stormrazor 1.200, Stridebreaker 1.250, Trinity 1.250
So what i like to do is going Dirk into Hearthbound. Why is that? You get for just 2.200 Gold: 50 AD, 15% Attack Speed, 10 Lethality and the Movement Speed passive on AA.So you basically crafted something with a full Item value for just 2.200 Gold.
I always do that if i can't get mentionable ahead in early Game. Let's say i play vs full Squishys and i'm ahead or i see a Opportunity to get ahead you always want to go Collector. You deal alot of Damage as Graves which gives you the opportunity to yoink early Kills with Collector passive. Making you Feed early on so Enemy Bot/Mid are not allowed to get Prio and you can full Focus on Drakes and counter Jungle. If the Enemy Team trys to play the Game you just punish them. Nothing they can do about it. It's just illegal.
Let's talk about 2 Item Spike. Which is in the early Mid Game and the most Important. This Stage of the Game decides most Cases rather if you gonna probably Win the Game or not.
I give you some 2 Item Damage examples on again, average Enemy with 1.400 Health & 70 Armor. Collector + BC: 1850, Storm + Blackcleaver 1750, Youmus + BC 1900, Collector + Stride or Trinity both are around 1880, Storm + Collector 1850.
So as we can see it's basically the same. So why i recommend 2nd Item Stride / Trinity is because of the same Damage output, as well as it just makes you Tanki with 300 Health, 35 or 20 AS, 20 Ability Haste + high AD Damage. Rather it's the 60 AD of Stridebreaker or the 40 AD + Sheen of Trinity.
After testing out both Items i like Stridebreaker much more. Here is why. First of all the Damage is the same. But Stridebreaker is less Flippy and more consistent. On Trinity you always have to keep in mind to proc Sheen for the maximum Damage outcome. On Stridebreaker it's whatever because you have the +20 AD advantage so you just do your thing. Stridebreaker MS on AA is much better. You have a Ghost reset on each AA! In Combination with your Sorcery you are super fast after the first Auto already. Plus you have an extra active 200 Damage Slow which procs your PhaseRush in 1 Sec on a Gank, gives your 2 Slows in your Kit and Syngergies with Approached Velocity. So noone ever will get out of a Gank i promise you. It's so good.
3rd and 4th Recommended Item i don't need to explain i guess. You know what they doing giving you Tankiness, with MS, Armor Breaking + Antiheal. Which makes your Kit complete.
Some 3 Item Spike Damage examples on a average Enemy:
Storm + Collector + Infinity: 2.600, Umbral Glaive + Collector + BC: 2.700, Collector + Stride or Trinity + Mortal Reminder 2.800, Collector + BC + Infity 2.900 and full flippy Squishy Youmos + Collector + Seryldas 3.000.
So Collector + Stride or Trinity + Mortal Reminder offers you anything you can get in a Champion Kit with nearly 50 % Crit Chance , armor breaking, antiheal + Battle Monster with high Damage and Health.
I don't say "it's the new Meta" but that's how i stomp my Games because it fits my Playstyle and maybe it open ups something for you as well. My success wasn't nearly as good before.

2023.06.10 06:57 rdk67 Spring Day 81: Sweetness Remembered

(This is a nonviolent text.)
Life! Exclamation point! Today’s speaker is made of clock parts and possesses encyclopedic knowledge about the nature of natural life. Life! Exclamation point! Though biographies in the back of conference programs won’t ever tell the whole story, they tempt us with the true face of authority. Today’s speaker – Life! – is made of clock parts, probably a grandfather clock to begin with, young for its age, but then he started slapping on extra clock parts, moved by an urge he couldn’t explain, until the function of tolling the hour was more of a hobby, a weekend pass-time, compare to what all those precision instruments were up to on a regular basis. As a vision on stage, the speaker’s machinations were there for all to see – the whirring of gears and belts, the clanking of chains. Where his heart chakra was thought to manifest, swung a pendulum.
The nature of natural life is not an easy expertise to build a vocation around – Life! Exclamation point! – but what a sentence to say aloud. At this point in the address, one of the speaker’s mainsprings uncoils where his belly button would normally be. He uses the longer of his hands to poke it back into place without breaking stride, continues: What is a natural life? More to the point, what is a natural lifespan? Who better to know than me! He points to himself when he says this, does a quick spin in place, revealing the dozens of differently styled clock faces that cover the surface of his body, continues: I’m after the author’s natural lifespan, like to pretend I’m playing along, but the whole time, I’m thinking about his natural lifespan. Hmm, hmm, I wonder why? Ha! // The author changes the subject – today’s speaker thinks of something else.
When you discover someone living an unnatural lifespan, you seek to find out why. Not that the reason is the point – not by a longshot – but call me curious. Maybe they tripped at the right moment and tumbled past the grave. Maybe they did a few extra calisthenics before the cock crowed. Or – perish the thought – they succumbed to an unholy pact at a vulnerable moment. I have taken it upon myself to sniff them out – and when he says this, the regulators above his eyes both arch significantly. And what then? We usually have a quiet chat before I recite my speech and complete my visit. It isn’t personal, I begin – time sometimes wells up, spills over its banks, and floods the village. If we could avoid such catastrophe, we should – don’t you agree? The time nature intends, through natural lifespans, would never, let’s be honest, flood a valley.
And what, then, would I do? Proprietary information! hoots today’s speaker from the stage, does another quick spin, stage lights flickering off his crystals, his gleaming metals. About the author’s natural lifespan – oh, you thought I’d forgotten! Were you 18 when you first died? Had it happened before then? Were you but a child under-supervised? Under-supervision-ed, we might say. Remember the day? You rode a toy out into the street, and a car’s front bumper rushed forward to kiss you on the left side of your head, the temple, a stone flung by the age of automobiles. Don’t you remember? Of course you do – the passionate screeching of tires, as those around you stopped and turned to look, surprise gradually replaced by horror at what they knew happened but couldn’t bear to see. You thought you survived – didn’t you? – but thereafter, what appeared on your left temple? A knotted cist so prominent, people stopped you and asked what happened. You saw exactly two physicians over the next 10 years, both telling you not to worry about it, and so you didn’t. You didn’t! When you probed the spot with your fingers, it felt like a rounded room, a shelter built by something trying to survive. As for that 18-year-old involved in that off-road motor vehicle accident – nominee number two, let’s call it – true, you were far more aware of mortality by then, but your own? You climbed aboard a 3-wheeled vehicle that could travel at more than 50mph, completely lacking a seatbelt, headrest, or protective frame – without a helmet, boots, or jacket – and the brakes were less than half there that fateful day, a means of slowing down – a vehicle that would be rendered illegal to operate within a matter of years of the accident . . . the accident . . . remember the accident? August, you were traveling off-road to do farm work, the cornfield you were riding beside with several rows chopped out for silage, and on impulse, you decided to turn into the field to see where it went, then really opened her up because of the green blur of all that corn. Did you secretly expect the drainage ditch? Was this more of a suicide mission? Over the side you went, face first into the opposite bank, and if anyone was wondering – the effect was not of pain but of the lights going out all at once. Imagine the nature of reality that allows for: the inevitability of the crash, followed by all the lights going out – this is really happening – followed by some utterly absent experience, like a film editor cutting in a blankness where reality normally insists scenes of existence should be. The film projectionist would have been instructed to fast-forward through this part of the film, such that no time seems to pass, and the next thing we know, he is trying to push a 3-wheeler out of a drainage ditch. That thing weighing more than he does, and he’s trying to heave it above his head, up and out of the drainage ditch. What had he become? What time-wise tricks were in play? He finally gave up trying to free torment from its channel, staggered through the field toward the truck, face covered in blood, never went to the hospital. When the story is recounted later by his dad, the story became how dad fixed the 3-wheeler by prying the front wheel out of the frame with his truck and a chain. Can you imagine that chain now? They called it a log chain, and the links were cast iron. It was completely covered in rust.
The author knows all this already, receives a spiritual visitation during the writing of the phrase suicide mission, wondering if he’s okay. Yes, he replies, knowing this particular metaphysical weather report has a lot of ground to cover. Today’s guest speaker picks at one of his stems in a distracted way, lets the matter rest, inquires about whether – uh-hum! – he might be permitted to carry on. The author gets up, refills his coffee, returns to one of the picnic tables arrayed in front of the derelict peace church where he lives. He is surrounded by millions of individual affirmations of life, many of which are visibly in bloom or going to seed. A bumble bee flies by. A yellowish bug with zigzags on either side ambles up, its antennae twice as long as its body, tapping at the world in front of it. Among the local insect population, it’s regarded as a savant.
Uh-hum! How many more brushes with death would the author experience before it finally took? There was the time a few years later, same farm but different brother, taking turns firing a handgun at a target. This would be the last time he would fire a gun for any reason, was it not? They climb into the brother’s wedge-shaped sports car, named after the grasping part of a bird of prey, and into fate’s hands did fly. The car was totaled, the two of them, without seatbelts or airbags, unhurt inside the crumpled remnants of the crash, mere inches from winding up once more inside drainage infrastructure, this one built by municipal authority, and therefore of a substance that would have been altogether worse on an unsuspecting traveler headed straight down. Yes, you might have been saved from becoming the remains of the day – but by what?
The child who caused the crash, the one who pulled out in front of that bird of prey, barely old enough to drive, who had two younger passengers inside with him, taking them out for ice cream maybe – that young driver sat nearby while police sorted out the story. He was crying on the side of the road like he would never stop, like he had identified the crash as the latest in a series of personal failings that would stretch into the future of his adulthood like a hot blacktop road and which, at every stop along the way, tragic suffering would be the font of consolation. Was this the way reality was supposed to work? The author recognized the boy as himself at an earlier age, bent down beside him, put a hand on his shoulder, and said, you will be okay. No one was hurt, and the rest can be replaced – your heart is true, and your soul will find its relief.
Ah, yes, the crash, says the author – ah, yes, the crash. Ah, yes, the crash, says the author – ah, yes, the crash. Ah, yes, the crash, says the author – ah, yes, the crash. The late days of spring may be the most forgotten of the year. If we aren’t anticipating summer – it’s still spring? – then we’re longing for those moments when the world was still opening its mouth, and then its eyes, and then its hands. The trees are all open by now, those late-arriving sycamores even filling out their leaves, such that the twigs and branches are all mildly bowed by the extra weight. After spring assumes its labor, the rest of the season finds its dedication, and I imagine the beads of water rising through capillaries beneath the wood – call it a space program – and a sweetness spreads throughout the tubular organisms we call trees. Late spring – sweetness remembered.
Life! Exclamation point! Chronobiology knows nature has much to say about what is cyclical, when, and for how long – much less to say about the natural length of one’s existence. Is death something one develops a knack for? The next notable death in the author’s life occurred a few years later – the death that would make dying into a full-time vocation. And where again do we find the author? Beside a drain. This one introducing the age of indoor plumbing, as the author lay on the floor of a friend’s bathroom, his life flashing before his eyes, as he vomits into a toilet. This time the world does not go dark all at once but feels like fuses blowing out, like a timed demolition, flashing like a string of firecrackers across the structural frame of a building, and a voice not his own telling the author: you’ll be okay, ride it out, remain present, you’ll be okay.
Would he though? For this fourth death, another blank spot appeared, no two – two instances of nothingness, orbiting each other, during which time, during which time, during which time – perhaps language hasn’t the proper security clearance to convey the negotiations that must have taken place to bring about a return to the living. The author remembers his friend opening the bathroom door, before which she would have been knocking and calling his name. When the door struck him in the back, and he came back to life, had he landed in the place where that drain did lead? While his friend cleaned up the bathroom floor with a towel, he sat on a bed with his hands covering his face. The hideousness he’d just passed through was the abbreviated version of what was to come – he knew the drill by now. The knot on his forehead was gone.
Destiny had finally shown him to his home, gave him a tour of the place, before scraping him off the floor, then setting up a series of baffling crises – from autumn 2002 to May 2003 – that would occupy the author’s attention for decades to come. The will toward dying had finally brought the world to life, and the mind of the universe was both ecstatic and enraged about it. Down there, at the bottom of the drain, they were fighting a global war on terror, war on terror, war on terror, and if wars on terror sum up preferred formulations of self-annihilation – symbol of invocation: fighting a reflection – then perhaps the author’s presence was meant to form a mirror-in-mirror infinity from which sustainable futures would emerge. Welcome to Mirror World! Where reflectivity gives us an evolutionary future! Where a universal narrative unfolds!
The author is making me write this, I must confess, but to everyone’s surprise, I am forcing the author to make me! The author is mine! And the author wrote that, too, I must additionally confess, and the two of us go around and around like this – symbol of invocation: two snails having sex in midair. The flatness and hardness we associate with reflectivity is something we will all outgrow eventually, and the hologram of hyper-reality will appear within our being like a flying saucer, and we will all be both abductees and witnesses, shown around the universe in style. Too much to ask? The last such alien contact – the insinuation of verbal and mathematical language into the genome of big-brained primates – gave us the keys to earthly reality. We are now exiting the stone age, evolving the means to make benevolence a fixture of human life.
The author made me write that, too, and even though I am just as surely making him write this, we must admit the mutability within the fabric of reality was not won without a struggle. The author faced death 11 times that year, faced death the next year, and the year after that. Each point along the way wanted to finish what the others couldn’t, and soon death felt like an echo, and in that moment of not really distinguishing the source and the reflection – when they both look somewhat the same – he could tell life and death were likewise difficult to discern. Life! Exclamation point! Are you merely an extension of entropy? A quicker way of dissipating the heat from a rocky-bodied planetoid like the earth? And if you are, then is life really just another form of death? But death! Didn’t you show us the way? Wasn’t dying the source of the cure?
Today’s speaker made me write that, just as I made him think it. And as thoughts passed from gear to gear around his body – as cuckoos sprang forth through tiny doors at various angles – as a series of chimes and tones issued forth from the stage like the ringing of a bell, if the bell could tell time and was tolled by committee – then the river of the natural lifespan, subject of such grand speculation in a previous incarnation, could now take its course. Perhaps indeed valleys would flood, but such is the natural origin of certain fertile fields. Springtime couldn’t agree with me more, its will toward abundance glad to splay its fingers before another epic growing season. As the author considers ways to wind up this report – knowing such lived truth inspires concern – whether death equals life or life equals death, he reasserts a will toward world peace.
Peace.

2023.06.10 06:33 batwingsuit My first multi-day trip of the year was truly awesome

My first multi-day trip of the year was truly awesome
Just came back from a week of exploring the Fraser Plateau. Just over 1,500 km in 5 days, with more than 500 of that being on the last day. I'm sore and a little beat up, but man, what an awesome trip!
Stoked to be back on my Rally!
Crossing the mighty Fraser River on a reaction ferry powered only by the current.
A cool road only reachable by foot, horse, or motorbike thanks to a large rock slide.
Cool to see waterfalls pumping in what felt very much like desert.
Lots of bears in this area! Ran into two of them within an hour.
Meadow single track
Almost at the summit…
The summit at 2036 m (6600 ft)

One of several old fire lookouts that have been taken over by an off-road club.

Beautiful meadow lakes abound!
Proper Quebecois poutine in the middle of nowhere.
Lost my tent poles on a 45 km stretch. Pretty proud of my suspended tent set up.
Found my poles the next day…27 km back the way I came! Still can't believe it.

The Fraser River
A little hole to shade some kind of animals from the intense heat.

Too close for comfort.

2023.06.10 03:53 ProofBroccoli Is Lehamite Creek crossable? Or is it too dangerous to pass with the snowmelt? Will I get by with trail runners and trekking poles? Just checking because a recent news article about Yosemite states "Rivers and creeks in Yosemite are at or near flood stage. Stay out of rivers and creeks..."

Planning to explore Portugal? Whether you're a tourist or a new resident, understanding the country's transportation system can make your journey smoother and more enjoyable. Portugal offers a variety of transportation options to suit different needs and preferences.
For those who love the freedom of the open road, Portugal's well-maintained road network makes it easy to explore by car. Car rental services are readily available, and driving allows you to reach more remote locations that public transportation might not cover.
If you prefer not to drive, Portugal's rail network is extensive and connects all major cities. The trains are affordable, especially if you book in advance, and offer a scenic way to travel across the country.
For shorter distances within cities, local buses are a reliable and cost-effective option. In larger cities like Lisbon and Porto, you can also use the metro system for quick and efficient travel.
For a unique perspective, consider taking a ferry across the Tagus River in Lisbon or the Douro River in Porto. It's a beautiful way to see the city skylines and enjoy a leisurely journey.
Finally, for those who prefer active transportation, many cities in Portugal have invested in cycling infrastructure and offer bike and scooter rental services. Walking is also a great way to explore Portugal's charming city centers.
Remember, the best way to get around depends on your itinerary, budget, and personal preferences. So, plan your journey, consider your options, and enjoy your travels in Portugal!

2023.06.10 00:40 1stPostChillin My Parting Tribute to Costa Rica

Pura Vida Costa Rica,
I'm here to write to you and express my sincerest thanks for my experience in your amazing country. I want to express to you what I think makes the country particularly special within the global climate which I hope serves as a rallying cry for the values which I think are in rarified air.
But before I do that, I'd like to share a little piece on how I came to the country and why I'm leaving it for now. Several years ago, I met the first woman I ever loved. As it turned out, she was Costa Rican and I decided after some time to try and make a go of things in Costa Rica -- previously I had been put off as I was preferring cheaper pastures. That said, I made the move and eventually I came to love the country and the woman. However, years later we've decided to split up and she's kind of taken a hardline stance on me not patrolling the small country as we may bump in to each other. Do I think it's immature and selfish? A little bit for sure. It's pretty unreasonable to ask me to abandon the life I've built and the attachment I have to the country I love, but I'm someone who prefers not to have any drama or problems, and short of that I can see her point of view, and would prefer to avoid the advent of either one of us seeing the other with another person until considerable time has passed and the pain has subsided.
With that backstory I can say my farewell for now and in doing so, talk about what I love about Costa Rica:
- CR is a Latin American country but not one with all of the typical ailments. For starters, your Police force is truly friendly (albeit at times inept) compared to other Latin American counterparts. When I see a cop I don't have to worry like when I'm in Mexico, fearing a shakedown or exploitation. Whether I had done some sort of minor violation or they were just doing a routine check, they were always reasonable about it. I actually felt more safe around Costa Rican police than in my home country which shall remain unnamed :).
- Ticos have an amazing sense of humour. I was here across the pandemic and had absolutely nothing to do at one point so I temporarily picked up the nasty habit of Tik Tok. But no regrets with that decision as I'm proud to report Costa Rican TikTok is truly world class. It doesn't matter if it's a prepared joke or just some guy trying to cross a river during rainy season, the commentary is hilarious and ya'll are in a class of your own. I'd also like to note it had always been my experience that ya'll were funny in person, but I guess I didn't put two and two together realizing how much funnier you were until I could readily compare you against other countries' TikToks using a VPN during the pandemic (ya like I said, I had extra time on my hands). I predict an amazing comedian will come out of Costa Rica in the next decade.
- Ticos are super helpful. There is a special thing that happens when you get your car stuck, all of a sudden there are 12 Ticos there and a 12 pack of Pilsen or Imperial. No, I'm not going to choose one over the other, I think Imperial is better for micheladas though. Moving on, I always appreciated the informal roadside assistance I received.
- You kept your borders open during the pandemic. Now it may have been for economic reasons, but I assure you that socially this was ultra beneficial compared to the alternative. Please stand by this value of upholding freedom (even if it is in part sponsored by an over-reliance on tourism).
- Ticas are absolutely stunning and I'm totally jealous. Not only that, there's a ton of them, there seems to be an abundance of beautiful, single women. Praise God Ticos, ya'll are LUCKY.
- Costa Ricans are polite. I have always appreciated this aspect of the country. Politeness is valued, there's a certain warm charm here that while maybe not as overtly outward as say Colombia where people like grab you and start dancing, is still quite genuine and refreshing. I love talking to Costa Rican moms and grandmas, they are sweet.
- Costa Rica has a generally intelligent population capable of discussing a variety of topics with ease. Now I'm assuming some people are somehow going to get offended by this for whatever reason, but let me just say this isn't a given in every country. My home country has difficulty discussing political issues for example as people tend to get pretty aggressive, filled with self-righteous indignation, and defensive, that wasn't my experience when talking to Costa Ricans. I could assert my own views and they were often dealt with diplomatically if even not agreed with (even people say what a crazy dude after I leave). Conversely, it just seemed like most people were fairly politically conscientious and that people are willing to hit the streets for something they believe in. I recall the demonstrations across the pandemic where Costa Ricans were demonstrating against a seemingly absurd rate hike in property taxes and an unprecedented tax for removing your money from the bank. Congratulations Costa Rica, protesting and affecting change as one country is a vital democratic process, do not take this for granted and continue to celebrate it even if you don't agree with the particular reason for the protest. My country has a recent history of shutting down protests through illegal force.
- It goes to show how much I actually love Costa Rica that I put this so far down the list but obviously, and clearly, your nature and protection thereof is absolutely outstanding. All of the mountains, beaches, rivers, jungles, fresh water -- it's right in the name -- RICA. Your country is rich in nature, protect it at all costs and continue to boot out mining scum who want to exploit you. Watch out for the "illegal mining" narrative that is simply trying to act like only "legitimate mining" can protect you from this. It's a sham narrative that my home country would stupidly fall for.
- I like the traditional Costa Rican finca accent and saying "Costa Shhhrica".
- There is no military and that contributes to a peaceful disposition. This is a rarity in the world, and it was courageous step to take in favour of focusing on healthcare and education. It absolutely has helped Costa Rica to develop more of a middle class over its counterparts despite being one of the last to join trade agreements and thus be subject to more unfair stipulations. Never the less, it appears Costa Rica is taking center stage as a Latin American innovator.
- You had a civil war / disagreement between Grande Mexico and the now Costa Rica which someone won and yet you can't tell the winners apart from the losers. This is an absolute rarity, in fact I've never heard someone discuss this at all. Look how divided the north and south sections of the US are ideologically, yet here in Costa Rica there is no apparent winner or loser -- there is no faction that can be readily identified as having been for "Grande Mexico" and I don't think that's because you killed them all (hopefully I'm right). Rather it seems because of the principal of amnesty. Yes, I acknowledge I avoided the subject of the seeming divide between annexed and OG CR parts as well as the forgotten land of Limon. That said, there is still a high degree of unity in Costa Rica compared to other countries.
- I love the amount of good DJs. Yaya, this new house trend that seeks to form a snobby upper class through music that looks down on reggaeton is pretty annoying to me but I digress. -- there's really good DJs in Costa Rica who do a nice blend of reggaeton, dancehall, reggae, afrobeats, house and the like.
And with that, I say to you, some of the things I've loved about Costa Rica and hold near and dear to this day. To any Tico or Tica idealizing the lands beyond your border just let me say that in my experience Costa Rica is special. If you insist on holding something to an elevated status elsewhere and you think it's something you can't find in Costa Rica then by all means go ahead and explore, but I think you'll come to find in time that Costa Rica is in a bit of a golden age and a goldilocks zone (even historically you guys were just enough out of the reach of both Grande Mexico and Grande Colombia). Surprise surprise the least f*cked with Central American country also seems to enjoy the best "karma" for lack of a better term. Not without its limitations and its problems sure, but that can be said of any country, the general thing of importance is the foundation and the trajectory.
With all of that being said thanks so much for my time in your country and look forward to seeing ya'll again.
To the g's a cachete and the OG's:
