2023.06.08 20:33 Acastersapricots Top 10 low-UPF diet essentials
Hey all! I’ve been going at this low-UPF thing now for a short while, and I thought I might share some ideas of items that have helped me immensely if you’re just starting out. These are just what work for me, so take everything with a pinch of salt!
1. A Freezer and Freezer Bags This is probably the most important thing when it comes to actually being able to eat low-UPF while juggling work/school/life. Of course, almost everyone has a freezer, but keeping it in order and stocked with batch cooked meals removes the need for either constant cooking or the kind of preservatives found in UPF which allow the convenience to which we have become accustomed. I have a tiny freezer, so freezer bags have been much better for me than Tupperware at maximising space. If you’re eating low-UPF you’re likely using less plastic anyway, so don’t worry about it too much.
2. Good fridge storage You’re going to be buying a bunch more fresh fruit and veg, as well as other fresh produce. Storing this well will elongate its life in your fridge, reducing both food waste and cost. Try storing food in containers with kitchen paper and a little water, which can keep food from drying out. This works particularly well for herbs. I like the IKEA 365 range as it’s versatile and will always be available if I need replacements.
3. A good flatbread recipe I do buy and freeze a loaf of fresh bread from GAIL’s (UK non-UPF bakery) which lasts me about a month honestly. But I’m making flatbreads once a week at least. They’re delicious, they’re filling, they’re hard to find without UPF ingredients, they’re easy, they freeze well, and they make using leftovers easy as they work as wraps. Truly learning to make flatbreads has added value to my life. My husband loves them!
4. A stocked spice cabinet A LOT of shop-bought sauces and condiments contain UPF. Pre-made marinades and stir-fry sauces are really hard to find too. I’ve been making my own dressings and marinades a BUNCH! Having adequate, delicious spices to hand has been amazingly important. My favourites for a quick easy meal are almost all Middle Eastern: I just find they can make any veg or meat or leftover rice taste good, especially with a little yoghurt and some parsley/mint thrown in. Ras El Hanout, Za’atar, sumac, Baharat, Shwarma spice mix, etc. Go to Indian/Middle Eastern shops to get these at reasonable prices. I mount my spices to the wall which helps with accessibility.
5. A well laid-out kitchen This seems obvious, but you’re just not going to want to cook in a messy, confused, cluttered kitchen. Try to eradicate gadgets and utensils you just don’t use. Eating low-UPF means a loss of convenience, so you want to make cooking as convenient and easy as possible. Get a dishwasher if you can - you’re going to have more washing up than before. As I said, I mount my spices to the wall and keep NOVA 2 ingredients closely at hand and organised so that I can just cobble something together in 15/20 minutes.
6 - bags of snacks ready to go For me, this means I keep a few freezer bags of cubed cheese, apple or pear slices and non-UPF crackers in the fridge and just throw one in my bag when I’m heading out. This means I have something to snack on and don’t have to resort to UPF snack options. Other great options are fruit leather (Bear brand in the UK - meant for kids but delightful and compact), nuts, berries, carrots and hummus, chocolate covered raisins/cranberries, veg crisps, etc. just keep them ready to go or you will find yourself hungry or munching on UPF crisps or something.
7 - cordials One of the hardest things when eating low-UPF is drinks. I was so used to drinking diet sodas it was unreal. Having to suddenly stop and drink just water was sad. I keep a good amount of fresh cordials in my cupboard and add them to soda-stream water. You can also freeze lemon/mint/cordials in ice cubes which I’m told helps. I’m drinking more water than I ever did but it helps to be able to change it up.
8 - tinned fresh foods Self explanatory really. It’s quick, easy, often has higher nutrient content to the fresh stuff, and allows quick food prep. They shouldn’t contain anything but fresh produce. Tinned tomatoes/passata are a must, and legumes like chickpeas etc are so helpful. Also great for making fresh hummus easily. I adore tinned fish. Cheap, delicious, and non-UPF. Check out
cannedsardines for inspo.
9- Air Fryer Not to be an air-fryer evangelist, but air fryers are fantastic. You can whip up crispy chips or chicken wings in a few minutes so no need for pre-made stuff. Really replaces the convenience that UPF offers. My favourites are crispy sweet potato bites, salmon bits, halloumi bites, potatoes in general, hard boiled eggs (!). I bought mine for £80 and it’s already paid for itself in reduced energy bills from oven usage.
10 - the right mentality You’re probably not going to be able to 100% eradicate UPF from your diet if you have things to do other than cook, clean up and cook again. That’s ok. Things happen. Birthdays happen. Weddings happen. Nights out happen. Chocolate boxes at your gran’s. A drizzle of sriacha at a restaurant. A hangover. A summer’s day when you just need an ice cream.
UPF is bad for us all and it’s bad on a population level. It’s the single greatest factor contributing to obesity as far as I can tell. We have to be pushing for change and better labelling and policy and education and all the rest of it. But we live in a UPF world. It’s just not tenable for most of us to completely eradicate it. We CAN change our pattern of eating - the 95% of what we take in, to be low-UPF. I’ve done that, and I’m much better off for it. I’ve lost 30lbs without even trying, I have more energy and my relationship with food has never been better. I love cooking, I love eating, I love food and I just want to celebrate it more and love it for what it actually is - not imitation versions sold to me my multi-nationals. I also know I’m not going to be perfect, and that’s OK too. I want to live and eat with joy and freedom too, and I don’t want orthorexia or worse. Be kind to yourself!
I hope my tips help someone. I really have found eating this way to make so much sense to me. I hope it brings you the same joy too.

2023.06.08 20:07 NotTaintedCaribou The Saga of Nail Dad: The tiny tiny-human
| So, as some of you may or may not recall, I started painting nails to better help my daughter with hers. That project is still ongoing, and I do hers periodically when I can. Her most recent were some two tone rainbow nails. (Yay, masking techniques.) Admittedly I also discovered I just like painting my nails. Anyway, that isn’t what this is about. Rather, my youngest, codenamed: “The Baby Thing” has also decided she wants her nails done. “Monkey See, Monkey do.” Whether it’s her sister with rainbow nails, or me filing down my wife’s, the youngest wants it done too. She can very clearly tell what she wants, and picks her colors. Today, she decided on black. I feel I delivered pretty well. Though I credit her patience to sit still… and took it on herself to even go so far as to shut down for a nap mid process. Made things very easy. Her ability to do the “don’t touch, fingers spread” hand position is also phenomenal. She seems pleased with her service, and is now galavanting about the living room, her black nails complimenting her rainbow skirt and butterfly wings. For my services, I have been offered warm slices of cheese, with what appears to be cat fur… and dust. Products used: Holo Taco Long Lasting Base Coat, Holo Taco Single Coat Black. The top coat is Sally Hansen? Some kind of vegan clear coat. submitted by NotTaintedCaribou to Nails [link] [comments] |
2023.06.08 20:06 OhLookItsGeorg3 Gender euphoria from food???
For reference: I'm afab genderfluid
Idk if this makes any sense but certain types of food feel gendered to me specifically. Like for lunch I got domino's and I got a bacon mushroom pizza with buffalo wings garlic bites and potato chips and idk why but that just felt really masc-coded to me and it made me so happy. Conversely, last night I had salmon and kale and pomegranate and mushrooms and it felt so fem and it made me feel really good. Like I know food isn't and shouldn't be a gendered thing but silly things like this make me feel so good. Does anyone else experience this or am I just giga-neurodivergent?

The initial search through the offers is not going well.
“What about John Hopkins University?”
“Pre-approved for their internal loan program.”
“University of California Berkeley?”
“Pre-approved for their internal loan program.”
“Dartmouth?”
“It’s pronounced Dartmouth, and they’ll help talk to the bank to take out a loan.”
“Are there any universities in your entire tribe that don’t want us to take out huge expensive loans?!”
“No.”
With a frustrated yell, Vilek throws herself on a chair. Thiva sighs and crosses more names off the list.
I was expecting this. The US and its wretched predatory profit-based educational system is a non-starter. I am not saddling the lambchops with about a million dollars of debt. Each.
At least I’m unlikely to have to pay my own student loans back, what with my debt holder being a smoking crater.
“Hey, this is promising!” Thiva’s ears perk up. “I told Johan we were looking into education on Earth and he said he’d see if he could talk to some people at Lund University. They sent us an offer, check it out!”
“Lund University. That’s in Sweden…” I’m reading the letter rapidly on Thiva’s pad and getting more excited the more I read. “They’ve got both therapist and engineering courses. And they’re willing to transfer your credits and give you both full-ride scholarships, as long as you’re willing to start the term early and ‘establish a baseline of knowledge’. And they’ll split your classes into morning and evening so you don’t have to run double-claw studies like we usually do… And they’ll even have the UN pay for housing and transportation to Earth? Jesus Christ, that’s… really damn good.”
Vilek perks up too, both of them watching me closely now with wagging tails. “So what’s the catch?”
I read it again. Slowly and carefully. And I find myself faced with a bastard of a choice. “Well for a start… this says nothing about me.”
Vilek and Thiva are running the math. It’s not looking good. “What if we sell your house? That should give us plenty of money, right?”
“Vansi still owns it, even if she’s never setting foot there again. How about a loan?”
“Nah, that was the first thing I checked. Banks aren’t issuing loans right now. Even taking out any money is hard. With the economy in freefall they don’t want to encourage a bank run.”
I chime in unhelpfully. “And I don’t think they want to give out a loan for a one-way ticket someplace they can’t make us pay it back.”
Thiva pouts with frustration. “That too. Ughh, this was such a good opportunity, too!”
“It is. So maybe you girls should go anyway.”
Thiva’s eye locks onto me right away. “No.”
“I’m just saying-”
“No, I’m not leaving you alone here! I can just finish school here, and…”
“…and leave Vilek alone on Earth instead? No, you two should stay together. I can house-sit Thiva’s place and try to find a job. Maybe get enough money for you girls to head back during summer and winter breaks.”
“I told you it’s not my place, it’s Vansi’s.”
“And she’s welcome to it as soon as she gets out of jail.”
Vilek flicks her tail-tip with uncertainty, ears moving thoughtfully. “…Are you sure this is our best bet?”
“I’m pretty sure it is. And we don’t have a lot of time to look for alternatives. Says here you guys will be working with a pair of tutors to make sure your knowledge base is up to spec, and that’d start in just a few days.”
They’re my friends, and they have an amazing opportunity here. I have to be strong. It’s what’s best for them. It’s just a year or two. It’s not like I’ve barely survived the last month and a half on this wretched rock.
Date [standardized human time]: December 15th, 2136
Today’s physical therapy session is in my room. If I were hoping that’d lead to less pain, I would’ve been wrong. “C’mon, keep pulling your leg back! That’s the way!”
My arch-nemesis is currently leaning on my leg and levering it back toward my torso with her entire weight, and is encouraging me to pull back with both arms too. I’m pulling like a beast, teeth gritted so hard I think they might crack. “don’t… fucking… say it…”
My vision is blacked out from the sheer goddamn agony, while Chasa cheerfully encourages me. “Gold star, Martin! Do it for the gold star!”
But it’s the only way I’ll be able to restore a normal range of motion without lopping my limbs off and going for prosthetics. “mother… fucking… hate you…”
Which I can’t afford. And besides, upper prosthetics are nowhere near as advanced as people think. “That’s the way! Alright you can let go now, you did an amazing job!”
I collapse back immediately and straighten my leg. Opening my eyes I can see white stars dancing in my vision. Chasa pads up the bed and licks her paw before stroking it through my hair, giving me another cowlick. “Good boy, I’m so proud of you!”
I am defeated. “…thanks.”
“Hey, uh, is this a bad time?”
I blink at the familiar voice and turn my head. Mosun’s standing there with a confident expression, and Jarkim is right beside him. They both look good, far better than me at least. Jarkim’s got bandages on his leg and Mosun’s got a clavicle brace, but they’re both mobile.
Chasa gingerly climbs down from the bed and moves over to my file. “Nope! We were just done for the paw, except I was gonna give Martin his gold star~! He loves the gold stars!”
“…I am going to eat you.”
Jarkim squawks with alarm at my threat to my Zurulian nemesis. She is undeterred and cheerfully says “No you’re not.”
Jarkim speaks up. “Aren’t you… concerned, about him using that sort of language?”
Chasa stretches idly before placing the shiny sticker on my file. I’ve still got one for every session. “Nah, he doesn’t mean it. Threats and cursing are proven to help human pain responses, that’s all! He’s a big softy; I’ve got him eating out of my paw.”
I try to sound disagreeing but it comes out as a rather pathetic whine. “…I’m an apex predator…”
“So you were both discharged?”
Mosun flicks his ear affirmative. “I was in for a paw longer than Jarkim was, but we’re out and healing now. It’ll be another thirty-ish paws before my collarbone’s fully fixed up, but I can return to daily life.”
That’s an insanely short time to recover from a shattered collarbone, but I suppose the medi-teddies are the leading health care providers in the galaxy for a reason.
I nod. “Well, that’s good. The rest of the posse doing okay?”
Jarkim moves a wing in the positive. “Hanya got in contact with that human you mentioned, doctor Eriksson. She seems positive about it. Slavik’s back on their farm.”
I nod. “So what are you guys gonna do? I, uhh, I don’t know what you do for work, Mosun, but I think Jarkim’s out of a job.”
Mosun grins, before getting a thoughtful look and tapping his leg a few times on the floor. “I drive around stocking vending machines, so nothing that matters. But I’ve been teaching Hanya a little, like she asked. And I think… I think I’d rather like to start a Dance school. So I’ll be saving up a bit and getting it set up while I heal.”
It’s clear he doesn’t mean ballet, but I make sure to censor myself around Chasa just in case her cheerful disposition toward humans doesn’t carry on to ‘primitives’. “I think that’s a fantastic idea. I know there are a ton of humans who’d be lining up for a chance to learn your culture’s Dances. Yotul too, obviously. And Hanya’s shown there’s interest from other sapients too…”
Jarkim clacks his beak twice before speaking. “I’ll go work on Slavik’s farm for a while to pay them back, and to stay airborne. But after that… I want to help people. And I’ve still got contacts. So I was thinking of setting up a sort of troubleshooting agency. People could come to me with problems, and I’d try to help them out.”
I laugh, but quickly reconsider as my body protests the action.
It’s the most stereotypical ex-cop thing he could do! “You’re gonna become a freaking private eye?!”
Jarkim looks me dead-on and deadpan. “…What’s a private eye?”
Date [standardized human time]: December 19th, 2136
My fingers run through Vilek and Thivas’ fur slowly. I have been discharged from the hospital, but I’m still going to be in for physical therapy every other paw for the foreseeable future. Right now, though, I am relaxed. “How long, now?”
Vilek answers. “Half a claw.”
That’s not a lot of time, but I am determined to not ruin it with a foul mood. “Mm… You girls all packed?”
“There’s not a lot to pack. We’re getting most everything once we’re there.”
“Mm.”
Thiva’s currently quietly crying onto my shirt. “I’ll miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too, lambchop. But I’ll feel better with you two together, and doctor Eriksson is in Lund, so you can have in-person sessions.”
“And you’re sure you can’t come with?”
I shake my head. “Unless you got any new ideas. Besides, moving between human nations is a pain in the ass. I can’t get in as a refugee. Sweden’s been strict about refugees since before the Satellite War: I set foot on Venlil Prime first and VP’s been willing to house me, so that means according to Sweden and most other nations that I have to stay here until I can go back to the US.”
Fucking ‘first safe harbor’ laws. “And since I’m a citizen of the United States of America I can’t move to Sweden on my own anyway. At least not without having a job or family or something there.”
Thiva looks up at me and says softly “…We’re family, right?”
Oh, wow, okay. I bite my lip for a second to keep from crying. It mostly works. “Yeah, of-of course we are. But that’s not how they see it. Don’t worry, we’ll try to figure something out. We just need to be patient.”
She gives a soft and sad sigh. I scratch behind her ears and look over at Vilek.
Vilek gives a soft beep and leans her head against my other hand. “Do you know a lot about the place?”
I shake my head. “Almost nothing. Lund’s a city in Sweden, and Lund University is around five hundred years old. Before going to Venlil Prime I had never left the US, which is almost as far from Sweden as you can go before you start getting closer again. But it was practically untouched by the extermination fleet, and the people are famous for being friendly.”
Even that much I had to search online to learn.
The stereotype that Americans can’t tell Swedes from Swiss might not be true but it’s apparently not as far off as I thought. “You’ll be studying one claw, then a break claw, then another claw of study, then you have three claws off. These six-claw periods are a day. You’ll study five days, then have two days to yourselves.”
Vilek whistles a soft laugh. “So there’s a lot of time to recover.”
“Remember, humans tend to sleep for eight hour stretches. So most people sleep eight hours, study or work eight hours, and have the remaining eight for transportation and personal stuff.”
“Hopefully that’s not going to be a problem…”
“I managed to adjust to VP’s time, I’m sure you’ll manage Earth’s. Worst case scenario, there’s coffee. Every student lives on coffee. And there’s soda, and potato chips, and curry. There are so many tasty things that you girls will adore trying on Earth.”
Thiva wags her tail softly, looking up at me. “You make us sound like gluttons.”
“No, I’m saying I miss those things because Venlil food sucks.”
Both girls play-push me and bleat with protest, making me laugh.
Mary mother of God I am going to miss them. “Speaking of that, it smells like the food’s done.”
“Huh? I don’t smell anything?” Thiva gives me her most deadpan expression of confusion, and I roll my eyes at her and gently pinch the tip of her ear to pay back her jest. That elicits an adorable little squeak, and I smile while I get up and grab my crutch. I won’t be able to walk unaided for a long time, perhaps ever. I’m okay with that. I kinda want to have a walking stick anyway. A classy wooden one, like Tom’s.
Maybe I can be the first human with a walking stick made from Venlil wood?
I put out the spread. Cooking has been an extra pain in the ass with my injuries, but I’ll be damned if that’s going to stop me.
I present the plated-up meal on the table by the couch with a small flourish. “Here we go, girls. This is the meal I was going to make for you before things got… hectic. Tomato focaccia and pasta alla norma. And to drink, wine. That’s a fermented drink from the juice of grape berries. This particular wine is a variety called Nerello Mascalese, from my family’s ancestral home of Sicily.”
Vilek wags her tail as she leans forward. “This focaccia looks sort of like Strayu, but with a bunch of stuff on top?”
“It’s a sort of bread, almost all human cultures have some variation on bread. I’ve topped it with cherry tomato fruits, rosemary herbs, and kosher salt.”
The lambchops look at it with excitement, and Thiva’s the first to tear off a bit and place it on her outstretched tongue. She rolls it into her mouth and starts chewing, and her ears perk up and her tail wags at once. Her eyes half-close and she looks like she’s melting. “Ohhhh Protector… it’s so sweet, and salty, and juicy, and-and-and-”
Vilek excitedly tears off a piece for herself and plops it into her mouth. I’m rewarded for my hard work with an adorable squeal of joy from her, and she takes a second piece and shovels it into her mouth too. Only after swallowing does she focus an eye on me. “If I didn’t already want to mate with you beforehand, this ‘focaccia’ would’ve sealed the deal!”
I find myself blushing rather hard, and simply take a small bit of the bread for myself wordlessly. Thiva and Vilek both whistle a laugh.
After having thoroughly sampled the bread Thiva pokes at the pasta dish with a claw. “So what’s this other stuff? It looks utterly wild!”
I smile at the two, letting my explanation cool my jets a bit. “Pasta is made by combining a ground wheat powder with water, and then shaping the resulting dough and boiling it. Here I’ve combined it with a sauce made with tomato fruit and herbs, as well as a spongy and nutritious plant called eggplant. You guys don’t seem to mind bitter plants, so I figured it might be a good idea. Finally, it’s got a vegan ricotta made with almond nuts, lemon juice, and garlic powder… and basil, a wonderfully fresh leafy herb. This is a classic meal from Sicily, modified the tiniest bit for my herbivorous lambchops.”
The two take a pair of spoons and scoop up some of the mixture, making sure to get a bit of everything. They look at each other and, on an unspoken signal, put the food in their mouths.
They squeal and gasp. Vilek even squirms happily in her seat, while Thiva just wags her tail rapidly and moves her ears in slow little circle motions as she chews. Vilek’s the first to speak up. “…this is absolutely crazy, there are so many flavors… all at once! But I can taste each one…”
I pour some of the wine into their glasses, wincing a bit at having to awkwardly brace the heavy bottle in both hands.
I know the Venlil can hold their alcohol well enough to make the Irish blush, so I’m not concerned about that part. Having tried Venlil drink once, I am mostly curious as to if the lambchops will be able to appreciate the complexity of something that doesn’t taste like everclear and paint thinners.
As they take small sips, I needn’t have worried. Thiva in particular bleeps with joy and perks her ears. “Oohh… that’s rich! There’s sweetness, and acidity, and a sort of dried herb taste underneath it all?”
Vilek adds her own opinion, but is slower with it. “There’s a sort of earthiness… and I can taste it a little differently just by holding my mouth near the glass… that’s wild. It goes really, really well with the food too…!”
I laugh quietly. “Heh… I’m glad you girls enjoy it. Just make sure to leave some room for dessert. There will be chocolate cake.”
Thiva tilts her head. “You humans have meals for
after your meals?”
“Only for special occasions. Don’t worry, you’ll love it.”
“It looks like dirt.”
“Wet dirt.”
I wait patiently with a small smile. They load their spoons with some of the moist, spongy chocolate cake and the rich frosting that I’ve so lovingly slaved over. And into their mouths it goes. I wait for the reaction.
It does not disappoint.
“
MMHH!!!” “
MMFF-MFFH!!”
They immediately start devouring their dessert, while I grin. “Well girls, If you don’t want the ‘dirt’ I’ll be glad to take it off your paws.”
They quickly protest. “Don’t you dare!” “Yeah, we’re keeping the whole thing! This stuff is better than mating!” “How would you know? You’ve never even done it!” “Yeah okay, but am I wrong?” “…I didn’t say that!”
Laughter and whistling fills the room. As far as last meals together goes, this one is going about as well as I could’ve hoped.
We’re standing outside. We’re beside the politely impatient cab driver that’ll take the girls the first leg of their journey to the space port and on to Earth. Thiva’s crying again and clinging to me. It hurts, but I grin and bear it.
Vilek smiles, the human expression looking a bit foreign on her face. “…You promise you’ll be okay? I… I need to hear you say it.”
Thiva flicks her ear and tail. “Yeah. W-We can still change our minds, if… If you need us.”
I have no goddamn idea what I am going to do after you girls step into that cab. I smile at my beloved lambchops, give them a warm hug, a pair of quick kisses on their cheeks.
And I lie to their faces.
“Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine without you.”

I come bearing all the Sorcellerie Apothecary scents I have tried thus far! This includes some of the new scents, along with discontinued scents, and current scents. I pay attention to the longevity and strength of a scent and make note of things that required me to put nose to skin to smell.
Things I don’t like: green scents, floral scents, fresh/clean scents, faint scents
Things I do like: vanillas, red musks, fruits, complex gourmands (as in, I don’t want to smell like cake, but I like scents with sweet notes mixed with musks, resins, incense, etc.) honey scents, woodsy scents, strong scents
I don't typically rate all scents, but I will rate my 5 Star scents. I try to mention who would gravitate towards a certain scent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Strings of Light in the Forest: Vanilla milkshake, vetiver, lavender, beeswax absolute, golden orbs of amber, Ambroxan
This is a favorite of mine from this shop. There’s something about that milkshake note (not overly lactonic) paired with vetiver. It brings this smoky dark velveteen feel to this, paired with a very lovely smooth amber that is truly golden (not musky/limey amber). This is a cozy scent, warm, gourmand without being too sweet. Has some good throw, I can smell it waft around me. My husband said this one smells vaguely like rich dark chocolate brownies to him because he couldn’t quite figure out what he was smelling, but he knew he liked it. I don't get brownies from it, but whatever floats his boat LOL. 5/5 FS - complex gourmand amber vanilla lovers
~
She's A Witch: Pizzelle cookies studded with anise seeds and dusted with powdered sugar; heliotrope, soft woods, musk
I got a lot of anise in this scent, made sweeter with the cookie aspect. A nice perfume in a general sense, especially if you are a fan of anise. The heliotrope elevates this to more than just a gourmand scent, but it isn’t enough to change that this is an anise cookie scent at its core.
Cookie fans / anise lovers.
~
Snow Moon Magic: Best-selling Moon Magic gets extra cozy for winter with the addition of fluffy marshmallow, a house tincture of Tahitian vanilla beans, and gooey cookie butter
One of my favorite scents from SA. While this is gourmand, is has a very elegant, rich lean to it from the sugared lavender in the base notes of Moon Magic. Definitely not your typical marshmallow scent, so if you just want ‘sugary marshmallow’ you are probably better off with 2am in Lafayette for that! This scent comes off as a dark chai tea vanilla with those gorgeous spices uplifting it, heavy and lofty all at once. The sugared lavender in Moon Magic elevates this scent to the next level without making it an offensive in your face lavender scent. This scent is strong and does tend to float around you in a pleasant scent bubble. 5/5
Complex spiced vanilla fans.
~
Something Wicked: Vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood, whiskey
Oddly enough, I couldn’t really pick up this scent. I got vague hints of extremely quiet whiskey vanilla. This is one of two scents I had trouble picking up from this house. I’ve never really had this problem at another shop, so it must be a nose thing with certain ingredients used!
~
We Are All Stardust: Sandalwood nut co2, Australian sandalwood, beeswax absolute, Iso E Super, Ambroxan, labdanum, vanilla
The labdanum in this scent comes off as a limey amber note to me and I don’t think I exactly love it. This is a muskier, chewy sort of woodsy scent. The beeswax gives that chewy/waxy feel, but I think I’m really picking up the sharp labdanum as the forefront of this, backed by sandalwood. This isn’t a sweet scent, but nor is it completely woodsy. If you want a cozy warm scent and enjoy labdanum and sandalwood, this should be a good one for you. My husband likes it on me, but I don’t think it’s my style.
Unisex, woodsy cozy fans. Labdanum lovers.
~
What Big Eyes You Have: Immortelle absolute, lemon meringue pie, pearlescent vanilla musk
Another absolute star of a scent. Quite possibly my favorite, I bought this as a full size without knowing what it smelled like and never once regretted it. In fact, my 3.7ml bottle is almost gone, so I will be buying more. I have a strange history with lemon scents; while I love the idea of a lemon bar or a lemony cake, most places smell of straight up Lemon Pledge cleaning supplies to me. Not so with this scent. Huzzah, amiright?
This is truly a bright, uplifting creamy lemon that sings of summer days in the sunlight. It’s a gourmand lemon without going too sugary sweet or childish. Very mature and elegant. A definite crowd pleaser, something that is work friendly. I take it on business trips. It’s a true vanilla lemon that leans almost like a creamy custard, yet is still very tart, like a lemon curd. No sharp, overbearing citrus-feel to be found. Impressive longevity and throw for me, this sticks around all day when I wear it and people do notice it and give compliments. FS 5/5
Sophisticated lemon pie lovers, summer scent fans
Between The Sheets: Figs, cream, beeswax absolute, cashmere, wool, skin musk
I really wanted to love this, but alas, the Figs were green and sharp! I figured this would be a creamier, sweeter fig, which is what I like, but this was definitely a green, more herbal fig. There is something cold, almost mint-like in this scent and I cannot figure out where it is coming from. The cashmere gives this a butter-mint feel, chewy and fluffy on the skin, but that green fig is very much there, you can’t avoid it. If you like less gourmand scents, this one comes off with a more herbal / green lean to me with tiny hints of gourmand to it.
Green fig fans, those who don't want a sweet fig scent.
~
F$ckery: Luxardo cherry, caramelized sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, sandalwood, tobacco absolute, smoke, night air, clean sheets
Actually couldn’t smell this perfume at all. I have heard of other people having the same problem, while others absolutely love this scent. I’m assuming there is something about this particular perfume that people can or cannot smell.
~
2 AM in Lafayette: Vanilla co2, oakmoss, cafe au lait, ribbons of caramel, beignets dusted with powdered sugar
Oddly enough, this one reminds me of Kyse’s famous Delizia di Marshmallow perfume. This is a very gourmand scent, with the powdered sugar really being present, giving that powerful Marshmallow feel. There is a vague aroma of baked goods, but for the most part I get strong, straight-up fluffy marshmallow vibes from this one.
Super sweet gourmand fans, marshmallow lovers.
~
Reduced to a Thing That Wants You: Yellow mandarin, pink pepper, tuberose, vanilla bean, marshmallow cream, sandalwood, nutmeg, sheer amber, warm skin and clean sheets
This is a very soft, gentle perfume. I notice the yellow mandarin on the forefront, along with a tiny spark of pink pepper. It isn’t overly peppery, there’s only a touch. The marshmallow cream isn’t too sweet or sugary, but gentles the mandarin by giving it a mandarin ice cream feel. This is a unique scent, not overly gourmand nor overtly fruity, as it also has a dry woods aspect to it as well, although very soft. This scent is pretty darn faint. I like it, but I prefer something more noticeable. This is one that you need to press your nose to your skin to smell.
Fans of soft scents, not overly gourmand. Gentle fruit with hints of pepper.
~
Sit For A Spell: Salted cantaloupe, a light drizzle of wild rosemary honey, fresh spring air, ambrette seed, and winding honeysuckle vines
This is a lovely scent, but it definitely straddles fruit and floral. I love the smell of the salted cantaloupe in this! So beautiful, absolutely reminds me of how the salted honeydew lolly tastes at Lollies by Leah. However, this scent eventually goes more fresh and floral on my skin, with the cantaloupe becoming more quiet and in the background. I think the spring air and the vines are very present here as this dries down, which quickly makes this a fresh aromatic scent instead of a more fruity scent.
Fruit & floral fans unite, though more fresh floral than fruit.
~
Love and Complications: Brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk, plumeria, passionfruit and soft woods
Beautiful brown sugared passionfruit scent. If you like passionfruit notes, this one is absolutely for you. It’s sweet and fruity, sophisticated and not artificial whatsoever. I also don’t notice the condensed milk, so I don’t find anything lactonic in this perfume. Just a lovely sweetened passionfruit with a tiny pop of dry woods in the background.
Sweet fruit fans, gourmand fruit. Passionfruit lovers.
~
Falling Stars (mean you are with me): A super-cozy, rich and warm blend of black coffee, almond cream, sandalwood, natural oud, palo santo oil, tonka bean absolute, and vanilla bean
~Black: I wasn’t sure this would be for me since I am not a huge fan of coffee perfumes, but I wanted to try it anyway. This is the ultimate coffee scent, seeing as it smells like I rolled in really dark espresso coffee grounds. If you want a strong, in your face coffee scent, get the Black version of this scent.
~Marshmallow Cloud: This one is a much quieter version of the above. I can sense something sweet and soft in it (the marshmallow), but the coffee feel is still there. This scent was really soft on me, I had to put my nose to arm to smell it. If you don’t want really aggressive coffee notes, you will likely enjoy this. It’s coffee with a marshmallow creamer in it.
Coffee fans all over the place.
~
Good at Being Bad: Dark, salted vanilla, buttercream, a swirl of honey, and a whisper of jasmine
This is another scent I have as a FS already. I love the strength and longevity on it. Very warm, cozy, and heavy on the skin with a nice scent bubble around you. This is a thick, rich vanilla with a darker buttercream. This isn’t ‘sugary’ or tooth-rottingly sweet. This is a rich vanilla that feels grown-up while being tasty. The jasmine is not forefront, but elevates this to ‘something more’ than just a dark salted vanilla buttercream. I think the jasmine ends up making this interesting without turning it green or herbal at all. Gourmand scent, dark vanilla vibes. FS 5/5
Complex vanilla fans.
~
UFO Disco: Mango lassi sprinkled with cardamom, guava, amyris wood and a holographic vanilla musk
Yet another scent I have FS of! This is the mango version of What Big Eyes You Have and I absolutely adore it, though they both give off similar vibes. This has a very tart, bright mango lassi feel with big pops of guava. This is also a scent that people have complimented me on while I was wearing it, once again saying, ‘whatever you wear, you smell of summer!’ If you like mango scents, I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with this one. It’s a lovely, happy scent. 5/5 FS
Mango fans, mango lassi fans, fruit & cream fans.
~
Frostbitten: An opening of evergreen forest gilded with sparkling snow dries down to reveal a super-sexy blend of cardamom, white and dripping golden amber, a hint of caramelized sugar, and a memory of a just-bitten maraschino cherry
As one would expect, this is a very cold scent, giving you the feel of being in a forest in the middle of winter, all alone in the dark with the full moon above. I didn’t find this to be gourmand whatsoever, despite some of the notes. The evergreen is definitely there, so this is icy, coniferous, with just a hint of non-sweet cherry in the background for a tiny bite of color. Cold, green, hint of cherry.
Fans of cold coniferous scents.
2023.06.08 19:03 PerformerBest7386 Is love jihad real? Or simply an exaggerated one sided narration of Hindu extremist groups?
Recently there has been a lot of buzz regarding love jihad, where it is described as Muslim men enticing Non Muslim girls and either marry them or elope with the girl, eventually the girl converting into Islam. There are also claims where a Muslim girl marries a Non Muslim man and eventually the man converts into Islam.
All in all, it is described as a conversion tactic employed to spread Islam. This is the popular narrative, on which even movies have been made.
How much of this is true? Is it true that many women from non Muslim communities are increasingly marrying Muslim men? Or is there an exaggerated one sided narration of Hindu and Christian etc right wing extremist groups?
Recently among Muslim circles there is talk of Bhagwa Jihad or Bhagwa trap, where the scenario is reversed.
Whenever this discussion is brought up on public forum everyone gets super aggressive, starts calling names, gets polarised, rampant Islamophobic statements will be made and the entire conversation goes down the gutter of adhominem and wild claims.
I have not seen any one engaging in factual dialogue on this subject. What are the facts? What are the dry facts?
My question technically is, Is there really a numerical assymetry among interreligious marriages in India and eventual conversions?
This can be analysed by the following questions.
- How many Muslim men have married Non Muslim women?
- How many Muslim women have married Non Muslim men?
- How many of the non Muslims from the first two scenarios converted into Islam?
- How many of the Muslims from the first two scenarios converted into other Non Islamic religions?
- How many cases of violence are there on Non Muslim people vs Muslims in interreligious marriage?
Are there any study, census, survey or any form of data which addresses these or similar questions.
Please refrain from calling names. Try to present data with link from good websites. Or atleast present you opinion in a civil manner.
2023.06.08 18:11 Thertch Return of the Obra Dinn Makes a Short and Mediocre Story One of the Most Engaging Narrative Experiences of All Time (Spoilers)
It only took about half an hour or so, and Return of the Obra Dinn had its anchor hooked into me so deep there was no escape. This is the type of game which doesn’t just pull, but rips you in with a harmonious approach centred around two main ideas:
One – its structure, and two – how progression is gated.
On the second point, it is a rare type of game whose very progression is untethered from any higher-level mechanical input, but instead occurs entirely within your own mind. This is a concept which is so rarely pulled off well, that the notable success stories in this domain (namely Return of the Obra Dinn itself, and the Outer Wilds) have become modern cult classics.
Conventional is the last thing Return of the Obra Dinn can be called. What I find absolutely fascinating about this game is how it uses all the unique elements in its toolset to tell a grossly engaging story with a book-like quality, and has done so with minimal dialogue and practically zero text. I want to dissect what makes this game ‘special’ so to speak. How the solo developer, Lucas Pope, has done the impossible and made a more than worthy game in the wake of Papers Please.
Against all odds, the game manages to make what is honestly a fairly mediocre story by contemporary standards, one of the most engaging, satisfying and enjoyable narrative experiences of all time which is far stronger than the sum of its parts.
A quick preface so I don’t ruin anyone’s life:
This is one of those games you can only play once. I’m spoiling the hell out of the game here. For anyone who hasn’t played the game, and you think there’s even a 0.1% chance you’ll play this one day, go away. I don’t want you here. In fact, look at yourself in the mirror until you can change that to 100%. I’d love to write something that would convince people who haven’t played to actually play, but by the one-and-done nature of the game, that would not be easy. Instead, you have to take it on blind faith and just play it. No game is for everyone of course, but I think at least tyring this game is for everyone.
…
So now that it’s just the cool kids, let’s do it.
Come on, mediocre is a bit harsh right?:
Maybe it is. However, I don’t think the strength of the game is the narrative itself. The writing is tight, the most common characters on the ship, the Obra Dinn, are generally believable and fleshed out, but I don’t think there much being said in the narrative proper. Essentially, a ship is delivering for the East India company. It turns out that a group of Formosans (a republic within current day Taiwan which existed very briefly during when the game is set, an insanely niche yet accurate addition I have to add) were transporting a supernatural seashell. Someone else tries to steal this, which incites various sea monster attacks of the Obra Dinn. Most of everyone gradually dies. The sea monsters eventually stop attacking, and the remaining survivors turn on each other for various reasons. Then finally, the captain of the ship kills his fellow shipmen in self-defence, and finally himself in the wake of the loss and destruction. There’s not really much in the way of character development, not really much meat to make a layered story. But hey, that’s actually totally ok, because that’s not the point of the game. This is a simple enough story, and the structure of the game around this story elevates it to heights that shouldn’t be possible, but Lucas Pope pulls it off.
Structuring a detective story – not so elementary my dear Wattson:
The story told in this game is structured as a non-linear story. The non-linear concept is key to Return of the Obra Dinn. We’ll get back to why, but at the surface, its not overly interesting. This is pretty much the standard format for how the minor narratives of detective stories (that is, the story of the mysteries themselves) are structured. Think about your classic Sherlock Holmes mystery, or even a standard L.A. Noire crime (if you let me be a bit reductive for a moment):
- Introduction to the conclusion of the event (someone was robbed and murdered in an alley!).
- Looking for clues to figure out what happened (the person was shot).
- Investigation of characters peripheral to the event (interviewing the suspects, one of the suspects has the victim’s watch).
- In a minor twist mid-narrative recontextualises the story thus far (the watch guy was framed, and it was his twin brother the whole time).
- The wise, pretentious detective recounts the story in chronological order, and everything clicks into place finally.
Essentially, the basic structure is a story told in reverse chronological order. This is what allows the mystery to remain tense and exciting the whole way through. For many, the satisfaction of a good mystery is in trying to solve the mystery alongside the detective protagonist, and the catharsis of the final reveal. Especially if you’ve been particularly observant and picked up the clues earlier than the overarching story delivers them.
A weakness with this mode of mystery structure in a standard story is that the audience doesn’t always share the ‘ah ha!’ moment of the protagonist. Sometimes this is by design to subvert expectations, but in the cases where it’s not, it can lead to a disappointing mystery. In the medium of video games, this can become a particular issue where a disconnect is much more dangerous. I mentioned L.A. Noire before. This bridges the gap somewhat as the win state of the game hinges on correctly solving cases. So, you’re incentivised to go beyond just passively consuming the mystery, but to actual solve the mystery. Ultimately though, these stories can just be played without any conviction if the player is getting bored or confused, and the detective roleplay element is lost.
Return of the Obra Dinn is almost a direct solution to this problem, and works as a much better detective game, at least, than something like L.A. Noire or a Sherlock Holmes game. (For reference I love L.A. Noire, I would never say it’s a bad game, pls forgive me for my transgressions Team Bondi, I miss you). Return of the Obra Dinn has almost the same structure in its overall narrative as the 5 points I mentioned above. But in this case, the main narrative is focused on the mystery of the ship, the Obra Dinn. The linearly paced present-day story has little of the game’s focus. It is thus fundamentally non-linear, and this is what gives it the detective mystery feel. This non-linearity is felt throughout every fibre of the game though, as its not just a reverse recount of a mystery story, but instead, the game mechanics for exploration itself has you travelling through time non-chronologically. So you’re there piecing together the mystery, travelling from the conclusion to the beginning through time itself, like a true detective, but in a meta way.
This is combined with the physical progression the player (i.e., the insurance auditor) makes through the game. You have to go deeper into the ship, downwards, to progress through the mystery. So, you travel from recent events to events further in the past as you simultaneously travel deeper into the ship, the whole while travelling deeper into the mystery itself. It is an excellent way to sell the feeling of solving a mystery with pacing alone.
And about that pacing. The bulk of the story could be told upfront in a linear way, with all the details present in a full playthrough, in probably about 10 minutes. But you solve the mystery of everyone’s death one by one and are drip-fed exposition for the story of the Obra Dinn over about 10 hours instead. You feel like you know all 60 people who served on the ship personally by the time you’re done, and you walk away with an investment in the narrative few other games in the mystery genre could even fathom achieving.
Ultimately the reverse-order solution gives sense of constant discovery. Exposition is rarely direct, and instead is embedded in the discovery process itself.
Gate my progression Daddy:
So, the pacing and structure of the game is fantastic, and tuned just right to sell the detective mystery narrative and feel. That is only half of the story though as the progression system of the game is so unique in the wider landscape of video games.
Mechanically, the game is dead simple. You walk around and watch scenes of the deaths of people on the Obra Dinn. You then have to deduce, by clicking some boxes, what each person’s name was, what their fate was (usually death), and who was responsible for their fate. Sounds simple, but the game makes a lot of this very obscure for most of the fates. You therefore figure out the fates only through your own deduction. You are the one who must investigate the scene. You are the one who interprets the evidence. You are the one who must recontextualise new evidence to understand the mystery. No one is there to do this for you. Most importantly, to ‘progress’ you must fill in the fates yourself. All of these processes occur in the mind, it’s a logic puzzle at its core, but one which mimics the process of roleplaying a detective. The exposition is the gameplay here, where understanding the mystery of the Obra Dinn is what progresses the narrative, and thus the game. The “guess 3 to reveal whether you’re correct” system (mostly) prevents cheese as well, leaving everything up to deduction.
This is all unlike L.A. Noire, which is less logic, and more about trying to quantify how scrunched up someone’s face is. L.A. Noire is also more mechanically demanding with combat and gunplay as well, decoupling progression even further from pure deduction. In Return of the Obra Dinn, one’s brain is constantly firing to process the logic – with very little stimulus. So much of the game takes place in the mind, not on the screen.
A lot of people say this game makes them feel like a genius. The deep connection between game progression and narrative is exactly why. You discover the story through your own logic, and in order to finish the game, you necessarily need to have successfully completed the logic puzzles of the game (the fates). So, you feel like a genius for simply pursuing the core gameplay loop. Additionally, player agency over the experience of the story (specifically over the non-linearity of time) creates a sense of immersion and fuels the desire to uncover the mystery and thus the narrative.
So, the structure of the game makes puts the events of the game in such a way that you fill in the detective roleplay. This so powerfully synergises with the gameplay systems themselves that you have this narrative experience so encapsulating, very few games come even close to competing. There is one last thing which sells the experience.
Muh’ immersions:
The game could have perfect pacing, a perfect narrative structure, a satisfying logic progression system, but that doesn’t mean you’ll want to keep playing the game. You have to be invested in the moment-to-moment presence, since a lot of what you’re doing is walking around and looking. That’s why the meticulous attention to immersion, and to the details within the worldbuilding are a crucial part of the game. Return of the Obra Dinn is a wonderfully immersive game, whose immersive qualities blend together with the non-linear structure to not just pull, but rip you into the games narrative and world.
I mentioned before that the game has a book-like quality. What I mean by this is that the mind does so much ‘fill in the blanks’ throughout the game. This is in large part due to the 1-bit art style. It cements a wonderfully unique identity to the game which makes it instantly recognisable, but more importantly it allows the game to play out as if every frame were an intentionally designed piece of 1-bit artwork. The simplicity of the low resolution and the binary colour presentation means your mind fills in a lot of the gaps. It kinda feels halfway between reading a setting in a book, and seeing a setting realised on film or in a photorealistic render. Because your mind is doing a lot of the heavy lifting, your enveloped in the world. This extends so brilliantly to the sound design, especially when you’re below deck. The creaking of the ship as it bobs in the water. The sound of waves crashing out in the infinitely encompassing ocean. The the moments of silence which briefly fill in the in-betweens as you process the mystery around you. It ground the player in such a strong sense of presence.
Before each ‘scene’ in the game where you experience someone’s death, the screen is blank except for captions of the words spoken by the people in the scene. Your mind ignites with imagination as the soundscape tells its own story alongside. Then, the scene arrives, and it’s static. No animations. A picture might tell a thousand words, but they tell 1000 different permutations of 1000 words, and no two interpretations of events in Return of the Obra Dinn’s death scenes will every be perfectly identical. It a balanced dichotomy of explicit visual and auditory presentation with enough missing information to execute the book-like quality of its presentation.
At the same time, everything in and on the ship is believable, and this is in no small part to the immense research Lucas Pope did to have accurate attention to detail. The ship design, the crew structure, the geography of the ship’s voyage. When you go to check after the fact, it is all impressively accurate (with the exception of the number of people on the ship, Pope has mentioned he had to cut the realistic number down to 60 so he could actually finish making the game). It might not quite fit here, but I absolutely have to shout out the soundtrack as well. It sounds like someone was told “this organ is on fire, you have 3 minutes to play its final piece, go”. It gives a sense of grandeur to the wider narrative and world. I’m astounded that a generalist like Lucas Pope has such refined skills across his disciplines that everything from the gameplay to the art design, to even the soundtrack, which he did so himself, are all of such high quality. It clearly helps in executing such a precise creative vision like that in Return of the Obra Dinn.
Conclusion (lucky I didn’t make my critique non-linear):
What a follow up to Papers Please. I think Papers Please was a more popular game in general, and in interviews, Lucas Pope has said he actually prefers Papers Please himself. However, Return of the Obra Dinn shows this is not a one-hit-wonder situation. I think both games work well for different reasons. Having single name authorship on games is very rare, and Pope has earned his title here as a video game auteur in my opinion.
Despite the simple narrative in the game, every single aspect of game design comes together to pull of the ‘more than the sum of its parts’ effect. In particular, the game is trying to sell a detective roleplaying experience. It is not the plot or story itself, but the non-linear narrative structure in harmony with the mental meta progression, and sharp immersive qualities of the game which hook you in. You always want to figure out the next three fates. You always want to understand the mystery with an insatiable curiosity. You want to pin everything on the captain.
Executing a game like this clearly isn’t an easy task. While simple on the surface, a lot of creative design has to come together from different disciplines of video game development. It might not be an overly popular subgenre (exploration-focused logic games), but I think there’s a reason so few exist beyond the explanation of demand. It’s hard to weave together an intricate world which is paced in such a way that the player is engaged from beginning to end. It doesn’t take much to shatter a link in such a long chain.
I don’t really know of many other games which exist in this category. I mentioned The Outer Wilds, which has a similar mental- and logic-gated progression grounded in in-game discovery. I know The Case of the Golden Idol operates similarly to Return of the Obra Dinn, but I haven’t played this myself so I can give any input here. What I can say is that for me, Return of the Obra Dinn stands tall and proud in a small list of exceptional games of detective progression systems by virtue of a breadth of expert design.
