  1. Please introduce yourself. Who are you? What do you do? How long have you been into photography?
My Name is Hari K Patibanda. I am a technology professional in love with nature. I was interested in photography for the past twenty+ years, and occasionally dabbled in landscape and macro photography. But I found my calling in nature and bird photography during Covid Lockdowns and since then have spent a considerable time in this area, growing my hobby as well as travelling across the country to see new bird species and habitats.
  1. In one sentence, please describe what you captured in this shot.
This shot is of a male Himalayan Monal – a member of the Pheasant family – while it was roosting on a tree and getting ready for the day.
  1. Why did you select this photo to share?
Photographs of birds like this Monal – unusually colourful and vivid, attract viewers making them curious about nature and the wildlife around them – something I like to achieve with my photography. This is the type of photography I am into.
  1. What style of photography would you describe this as and do you typically take photographs in this style?
This is a typical bird / wildlife photograph highlighting the subject in its natural environment. And yes, most of my bird photography shots are like this.
  1. When and where was this photo taken?
The photograph was taken near the small Village of Chopta, in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Uttarakhand, North India. This is part of a vast Himalayan Forest range – an important biological reserve that hosts around 800 species of birds and 240 species of mammals, 10,000 species of plants and a lot more. Many of these bird species migrate 1000+ of kms in winters and reach the southern part of country where I live – so it was an exciting experience for me to see the home range of birds that I photographed several times – the habitats are quite different. I went there on a 7-day birding trip during the 2 nd week of Dec 2021.
  1. Was anyone with you when you took this photo?
There were around 4 of us – all part of the 7-day birding trip across the forests of that state along with a bird guide and driver.
  1. What equipment (hardware and software) did you use?
I used my trusty Canon EOS R5 and an EF 500 mm F4 IS II Lens for my bird photography. For software I primarily use Lightroom, Photoshop and Topaz DeNoise.
  1. What drew you to take this photo?
Even before the start of the trip, this bird was in my target list of must-see birds – there are few birds that are this colourful, metallic and in purple colour. So, when we sighted these birds in the forest slopes on the hilly roadside roosting in a tree about 35-40 m away, I was delighted and waited for the birds to get a bit comfortable before taking this shot. There were about 5 birds together, 4 of them behind some leaves, while this male – a watcher probably – was sitting on an open branch. He slowly walked towards the trunk giving a brief clean view before he got down from the tree and disappeared.
  1. How many attempts did it take to get this shot? How long did it take you to get one that you were satisfied with?
It took me several shot and tries to get this right. I must have taken around 50 – 60 shots maybe. The temperature was very cold at around minus 4.0 deg C / 25 deg F that day – the coldest day for me till date – I had trouble handholding the camera steady. The light was also quite low in the canopy where the bird was roosting. And the bird started slowing moving, so I had to wait for the right moment hoping it would pause briefly. So, I did re-adjust and experiment with settings several times to get a good sharp shot.
  1. Did you edit (or do any post-processing/production on) this photo?
I processed the picture in Lightroom, denoised it in Topaz Denoise, cropped, tweaked colours, exposure and curves.
  1. What encouraged you to share this photo online and with others?
Flickr and other online websites help me in building networks where others can see my work and I can draw inspiration from other’s work. In find that they are particularly good for connecting with people with similar interests.
I also joined my city’s bird watchers / photographer’s forum online and the help of that network made a significant difference to me in building my birding and photography skills!
  1. Did you learn anything in the process of taking, editing, or sharing this photo?
Yes. Seeing these Monals in snow, in the forests or on trees, interacting with each other, roosting, pecking the ground for insects – that was a memorable experience and learning. I learnt a lot about the bird’s behaviours, habitat, its social nature and diet as well.
Also, shooting in low light and in such freezing conditions was new to me. And this was my first visit to that region, and we were on day 2 of the trip. This shot helped me prepare for the rest of the trip. (The previous day, we were mostly trekking up a snowy hill, so the challenges were different!). I needed to figure out camera settings – slow shutter speeds and medium ISO’s. Also, I carried a monopod for the rest of the trip wherever possible since the light was quite low. Lastly, I learnt about managing my breathing in the cold to get a steady shot with the heavy gear where monopod couldn’t be used. This was quite different to shooting in nice sunny weather in light clothing back home.
Editing the picture was not a challenge once I got the shot right, I just followed my standard workflow process.
  1. Do you remember what you had for breakfast (or lunch or dinner) the day you took this photo?
I do. In that area, we had the same food for the first couple of days all the time – there was no choice. On this day, I don’t remember having a breakfast at this point. We stopped a while later for
breakfast at a place where we got the Eurasian Wren with a spectacular backdrop – that was also a memorable experience.
  1. What would you like people to take away from this photo?
Appreciate the nature and be aware of the co-habitants of this planet – make it a better place. Our nature and planet are amazing and there is so much to learn, enjoy and explore. 15. Is there any feedback that you’d like to get on this shot?
I appreciate any kind of constructive criticism I can get on my pictures. Be it composition, sharpness, exposure, noise, colours or anything else.
In the past, there were several times when Flickr viewers had shared some critical feedback on my pictures that helped me to improve my photography. A viewer who went through several of pictures remarked on the close crops that I do of my pictures, so I did make those improvements. Others feedback on the noise levels in my pictures, I also learnt from that and improved my shooting and processing techniques.
  1. How can anyone reading this support your work?
People can follow my photography and browse through my work at Flickr and share feedback. Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/krishnacolo Instagram: @hari_patibanda
All my pictures are also licensed under Creative Commons Non-Commercial Attribution and hence are available free of use for any educational, NGO, non-profit users and organizations. 2023.05.16 04:23 TheLastofUsPartIII TLOU EDIT 3

Disclaimer: This is all for fun, I am not a writer; Naughty Dog will come up with something better than I can. I love Part I and II equally, if Part III does indeed get made it will surely be awesome too. Hope you enjoy my speculation, if you disagree with any of my thoughts or interpretations, that’s okay. Feel free to generate your own discussion in the comments. I wrote this for myself so I could stop thinking about this series. Fair warning there are spoilers ahead for Part I, II and the show. Also this is about 7250 words and is approx. a 55 minute read.
Tldr; Game theme will be about love, game will be structured like a prestige TV show, Ellie will be the main character among many playable ones and will conclude her story, she won’t die and there won’t be a cure, Ellie will find meaning in protecting and living for the people she loves, a bit like Joel. Abby and Lev get a small part and maybe a spin off game in the future if there's fan demand. Skip down to the outline if you want a less exhaustive read.
First Things First/Getting Some General Thoughts Out of the Way
What could the rumored third installment of The Last of Us have in store for players? Where are our characters in their development/arc so far? Will this be the conclusion to Ellie’s story? What common theories are likely? We’ll have to get started with some assumptions and interpretations of the series and characters before tackling an outline. First one being, the game canon will take some inspiration from the show, given they share a creator.
A Game Series Finale and a TV Series Finale in One
Starting with the big ideas first, how will the story be structured? Given Druckmann’s history with advocating for it to be adapted as a TV show during the film pitch days, directing/writing/producing on the eventual TV show, and now is rumored to be treating Part III like a TV show (even rumored to be hiring a writer’s room and asking cinematographers to come work for him), it’s no stretch to assume Part III will possibly have a more television like structure. Not to mention this would make the eventual HBO adaptation easier to accomplish. This structure would be in contrast to Druckmann’s previous stated approach on Part II, in which he wanted that game to feel like a dense novel.
This third game could feature chapters more deliberately paced liked episodes than Part I or II, full of miniature arcs and a wide cast of playable characters all converging to a satisfying finale, much like a prestige TV show. The pacing could be tightly controlled with clearer, more digestible chunks. I’d like to see the majority of the episodes focused on the series main character Ellie, with her as the main playable character, but also think it would be interesting if we had several other playable characters, in order to flesh out the world and story. Multiple playable characters have become a series staple at this point, and I would love to see that idea expanded upon.
Love as the Series Theme
Before the release of Part II, Druckmann repeatedly said Part II would be about hate, and that Part I was about love. But after release, he said this was part of the marketing meant to misdirect the player. In a stream with Greg Miller, Druckmann states: “When we first started talking about this game, I said, you know, the first game’s about love, this game’s about hate. That’s not true. Both games are about love.” “Both games explore the most wonderful things love can provide…And the worst things that love can drive you to…” So, love, and all of its beauty and consequences, will likely be the central theme and catalyst for Part III as well.
How Many Years Will Have Passed?
This is a common topic of debate, how much time will have taken place before Part III? I’ve seen theories of a few days, a few years, and even as much as 20 years to parallel Joel’s time skip from Part I. Personally, I don’t think a sequel will pick up exactly where we left off, but neither will there be a big jump in time. I think most likely we’ll see Ellie living on the edge of Jackson, around two years after the final scene of Ellie walking from the farmhouse. I think this gives enough time for a new plot to develop but is not so far removed that all our characters have moved on completely from the questions of Part II’s ending.
“So, what happens with the cure and saving humanity and all that?”
Part III’s biggest question for some is what will happen with the cure and Ellie’s immunity. Was it ever possible? Will Ellie sacrifice herself for a chance at another Firefly cure that will now have much more dubious odds? My interpretation is that the cure would definitely have worked had the Fireflies done the surgery at the end of Part I, but in the story we have the cure is never and was never going to happen, regardless if it was viable or not.
As far as the games and show state, at the end of Part I the Fireflies were confident they could produce a cure from Ellie’s cordyceps infused brain, only they would have to remove her brain and kill her to do it. It’s slightly ambiguous if it were possible and it doesn’t make real-world scientific sense, but the story isn’t about science or even the cure really, it’s about the characters we’ve grown to love and the choices they have to make. One being, would you give up your child for a chance to secure humanity’s future, to save the world? Joel wouldn’t, so he saves his world, Ellie.
All the extra details and interpretations of the Fireflies motives and capabilities are valid but ultimately don’t really matter. Joel and the Fireflies believe they could create the cure but they would have to kill Ellie, so Joel stops them. He can’t live without Ellie and all he is thinking about is taking her back to Jackson for his second chance at life. I don’t think Part III will undo the consequences of Part I’s ending, it would make Joel's choice too inconsequential in my eye.
I think the cure can’t happen not only for that reason, but because the infection in TLOU thematically represents some of the worst parts of humanity. The violence, the reckless hate and tribalism; these are all things that throughout history humanity has had to constantly work to fight against and try to evolve past to create civilized societies. There is no cure for these parts of humanity, just like there won’t be a cure for the narrative equivalent, the infection.
Saving humanity will happen on a more character level, like Joel bonding with and saving Ellie eventually restores his humanity, Abby saving Yara and Lev restores hers, and Ellie letting Abby live after nearly drowning her restores Ellie’s, or at least starts her journey to do so. Humanity also will be restored in the world with loving communities like Jackson. Ellie’s immunity will still come into the story of course, but most likely as a plot device/MacGuffin again.
Humanity will have to live with the infection, which has become part of the new world. The old world that the cure would’ve attempted to restore is gone, humanity must reckon with the fact the world has changed, cordyceps is a part of the natural environment and they must adapt. And many communities do adapt, with different philosophies and to vastly varying degrees of success, and in some places like Jackson they create a beautiful example of human life, arguably better than how much of the world lives today.
Now let’s look into our returning characters to establish where they are in the story before we tackle the outline.
Returning Characters
Ellie
Part II built to Ellie learning to accept that she is worthy of the life and love that Joel gave her and to finally have gotten past (or at least started to get past) the grief of Joel’s murder and their estrangement, as well as her Survivor’s Guilt surrounding her immunity and lost loved ones. She is able to forgive Joel and ultimately herself and is now free to choose her own destiny. I think Ellie’s future beyond the end of Part II is a search for that destiny, likely in living for, helping and protecting the people she loves, like her guardian, mentor, and father figure Joel.
My theory is Ellie’s main arc in the final chapter of her story will be her transformation into a leader for a better tomorrow in the new world, using her strength, resolve and eventual widespread knowledge of her immunity to become a hopeful and inspiring leader in ‘New Jackson’ at the end of Part III. I‘ll go over some examples here for evidence of my idea, there are some small things that add up in my opinion.
A minuscule but revealing moment of Ellie’s character I like in Part II is just after the opening scene. Joel is awkwardly trying to make small talk with Ellie when he says “Folks are…you know, talking about how impressed they are with you and how well you’re helping out.” Ellie doesn’t react much to this, she’s closed off with Joel at this point in the scene, her arms are folded and she’s looking to the floor, but when she reacts, she only says, “That’s good.” I think to Ellie, helping is natural to her. She doesn’t think much of it, but i think her desire to be a cure/world savior plays into this motivation to be helpful. She loves super heroes for a reason too.
Another moment not in the games, but in the show, appears in episode 7 and was written by Neil Druckmann. I think it’s pretty likely Neil has had discussions of Part III with Craig Mazin, as well as having Part III in mind when he wrote episode 7 for the HBO show. Knowing the endgame for their main character definitely would help make telling their story easier. Again, I am assuming the game and show canon will not be identical but will take heavy inspiration from each other.
The revealing scene is when Ellie is getting reprimanded by a FEDRA school officer, and he says that he sees leadership potential in Ellie. She shrugs this off as any teenager would, but I feel it is a little bit of evidence pointing towards this conclusion for her character. To build on this, in Episode 8, David the cannibal preacher tells Ellie he sees that she is a natural leader too (This may have just been his grooming attempts, but I think there is a bit more there). This idea of leadership popped up a few times, even Maria tells Ellie she would be a heck of a lawyer, one of the more common professions of political leaders in modern society.
As I’m sure plenty noticed, in Part II during the flashback where Abby meets Owen at the aquarium to reveal she found Tommy, we see the children’s mural uncovered. It shows a fully painted giraffe and zebra, and then an unfinished lion. It’s not a leap to guess that these parts of the mural each represent The Last of Us as a series, but I also think the choice of animal is a clue to the type of story we have for Ellie in Part III. A simple story structure like The Lion King to conclude Ellie’s arc and the main story of The Last of Us is a logical idea I think.
One of my favorite of Ellie’s journal entries, that I feel informs a bit of her potential mindset for Part III, is recorded after she encounters The Rattlers. She laments the existence of yet another group of radicals who name themselves. “Fuck all these groups”, she writes. None of the factions Ellie encounters have had the same level of love and humanity as the people in Jackson. I can’t see Ellie’s endgame as willingly going back to the Fireflies after all she has experienced. I think she will want a beautiful and human life like she experienced in Jackson, and would be able and willing to lead people to such a future.
Joel
For some, The Last of Us isn’t The Last of Us without the first game’s co-lead, Joel. An instantly iconic, lovable but violent and complicated father figure, Joel resonated with a lot of players, and rightfully so. He is a great subversion of the standard video game action hero, finishing the game not with a triumphant victory, but with a devastatingly consequential choice and a lie. He is one of the series most influential characters, and I think Part III would be lesser if there are no flashbacks with Joel at all, but he isn’t crucial at this point beyond a function as a storytelling device for our remaining characters.
His story is finished in my mind; he achieved redemption despite his dark past and actions at the Firefly hospital. He gained the respect, love and adoration of the community of Jackson and he had Ellie’s forgiveness the night before he died, so to me, he died fulfilling his purpose and with peace, despite being violently taken away from Ellie and the player too soon. Even if his arc is done, his presence is felt throughout the story and ripples through the other characters. Joel had a lot of influence on Ellie and Tommy, in many beautiful and positive ways, but also leaving behind his violence and emotional walls.
I think it would be a nice touch to have Joel show up for a scene or two to show his connection to our main characters and how his influence has had a great effect on them. How this will play out probably won’t be how we expect, and it’s entirely plausible and likely we don’t see Joel at all, but I hope for enjoyment’s sake we get a small glimpse of some of his best and worst parts again to tie Joel’s influence into the story and bring it full circle.
Tommy
Now one of the most tragic characters in the series, Tommy faced a lot of consequences for his actions in Part II, yet didn’t receive the same emotional catharsis as Ellie did in the end. A missing eye, a crippled leg, and a destroyed psyche are all that’s left for Tommy. He’s separated from Maria, and shown himself to be a violent, unstable man to his community.
Chances are Tommy is going to be a bit of an outsider among the people of Jackson, mostly left alone to dwell on his pain, given how violent, disabled men are typically treated in society. He is having a sort of reverse arc, where he is introduced in the story as a noble character but eventually loses his way.
Consumed by his grief, he seems hungry for vengeance against Abby, who in Tommy’s mind took his able body, his marriage and his brother from him. One of the big remaining questions for Part III is how Ellie and Tommy’s relationship will move forward; will Ellie tell Tommy the truth of what happened in Santa Barbara? Will she recognize the consequences of Joel’s lie at the end of Part I and heed the lesson, or will she make the same mistake and lie to Tommy about letting Abby live? I think Ellie will tell Tommy the truth, but it will have the unfortunate effect of sending Tommy just that much more over the edge into the darkness. His resentment towards Abby will turn to Ellie after this, and their relationship will be fractured in the beginning of Part III.
As a “joiner” as he is described in the HBO series, Tommy tries to follow what he believes to be right, but is often misguided. I think this drive of Tommy’s combined with his trauma will lead him to join forces with a group of antagonists within the story, a familiar group that will promise him purpose.
Tommy I believe will also be a good candidate for a playable character in an episode focused on him. We could show Tommy joining the Fireflies prior to the events of the first game, and inter cut that with some present day events to create some parallels in Tommy’s experience, but also show how he’s changed.
Maria
A so far sparsely used character, Maria has some untapped potential in the third installment. We only see her for a few key scenes in Part II, but our last scene with Tommy reveals a bit of her character and unresolved plotlines for Part III. Tommy tells Ellie and Dina that he and Maria are “taking some time apart”, which in my eye means Maria most likely broke up with him and Tommy is downplaying it. I would imagine Tommy leaving for Seattle led to Maria feeling similarly to Dina when Ellie left the farm for Santa Barbara. Maria would be justifiably upset that Tommy left behind her back to go on a murder spree across the country. I imagine in the show when the two of them have a child this decision could be even heavier. Maria wouldn’t take it lightly for certain.
So Maria is likely a single woman again, potentially now with a child to look after if they decide to give Tommy and Maria a baby in Part III as well(although personally the timeline feels a bit off for some late 40s folks to be having a baby but hey stranger things I guess). To start Part III I’d like to see Maria as a role model to Ellie, showing her what it takes to be an effective leader of a community, taking her under her wing and educating her. Helping Ellie reintegrate into society and helping her regain her humanity.
Maria is fleshed out with a few more key details in the HBO show, one most notably being that prior to the outbreak she had a position as an assistant district attorney (her age is a bit off but again this is just a nitpick, not important). I would like for her leadership role in Jackson to play a slightly larger role in the story and help to influence Ellie to her final goal and purpose.
Abby and Lev
As Part II’s reflection of Joel and Ellie, Abby and Lev go through a similar harrowing journey to develop a found family and a sense of love and belonging with a fellow survivor. Abby completes her arc of redemption in saving Lev and fulfilling the older sibling role for him, after completing her quest for revenge leaves her at her lowest instead of bringing her salvation. Her guilt and grief surrounding her dead father isn’t alleviated until she puts aside her hate and saves an enemy that saved her, like when her enemy Joel saved her before she took revenge.
Through the events of Part II Lev is able to maintain his sense of morality and self-actualize despite hate from his community and the death of his family. He helps Abby reach her redemption as Abby helps Lev to gain his freedom to live as his true self and experience the potential beauty of the world.
Abby and Lev finish Part II reaching their haven of the Avalon building on Catalina Island and rejoining the Fireflies. Given that both of these characters completed full arcs through the events of Part II, I think tying them into the main plot only as minor players is appropriate. Though Abby has a key plot role to play given that she is one of the few people who is aware of Ellie’s immunity and where she is.
Dina and JJ
Dina was a great addition in Part II, but I imagine she will have a smaller role in Part III. The last we see of her in Part II is her telling Ellie that if Ellie leaves, “she won’t do this again”. Dina is a character of strong conviction, I imagine she will stick to her boundary and have a somewhat distant but amicable friendship with Ellie, though it will be permanently damaged by the events of Part II. Ellie will act as a bit of an aunt type figure to JJ, stopping by to visit or help whenever Dina allows it.
My idea takes place almost two years after the events of Part II, so JJ will still only be three years old or so. Definitely not old enough to go on a cross country murder spree with Auntie Ellie! A theory I’ve seen floated by others that I think holds a lot of weight is that Dina will have moved on to another relationship, someone she perceives to be stable, loyal and predictable. Dina will have found a loving person she can build a family with, but in staying true to the painful nature of The Last of Us, this will be difficult for our protagonist.
Beyond being someone Ellie is motivated to be good for, whom she still loves and cares for, I don’t see Dina having a large role in the plot of Part III. She’ll have a role more similar in size to Maria from Part II I imagine, a few key scenes to help set the stage for our main character.
Factions
Throughout the first two games Ellie has wrestled with people trying to decide her life purpose for her, and I think the central antagonist(s) for Part III will be trying to do just that again. Before we get into the outline let’s brainstorm where our current factions are at and where they might go.
Fireflies
The Fireflies play a key role in the world of The Last of Us as the main opposition to FEDRA across the US, as well as the main group trying to “restore society”. They were once a seemingly large group with many cells across different Quarantine Zones, but at the end of Part I they disbanded to different areas with different motivations, scattered and leaderless.
As with the Seraphites, removing the key figurehead and leader from a group can have lasting changes on their morale and philosophy. As Lev says, the Seraphites didn’t start hanging people until their leader, The Prophet, was killed by the WLF leader, Isaac.
I think the Fireflies could potentially be very different from how they functioned under the tutelage of Marlene, possibly more violent, militant or desperate, and this could be a point of contention for its members at the start of Part III. They could be similarly fractured into a few different directions which could help set off the key events for the story. Like in the past, some could want to go after the immune girl, while others could aspire to something else, or be taken in by other groups elsewhere. I think we’ll see a new antagonist leading the portion of the Fireflies that will be unwavering from their original vision for the future. The others could stay in Catalina and try to make a peaceful society.
WLF and the Seraphites
There’s no canon confirmation either way, but from my interpretation, the WLF and the Seraphites are all but destroyed after their final battle at Scar Island. Each group would have gone from a few thousand people to probably hundreds each at most. I would also imagine most of the people left were those incapable of or less inclined to fighting. There is probably a very small amount of people left at the WLF Stadium and Scar Island. I think they will do their best to maintain them as secure communities rather than perpetuate war much further. Maybe they fight until total annihilation, but I don’t think they will have much influence on the main Ellie story going forward.
What I definitely do doubt is that anyone from the Seattle factions will be coming back to take revenge on Ellie or Abby. Part II already went there, I’m doubtful Naughty Dog would try to replicate it given their desire to not retread the old ground of Part I when making Part II. These groups could function to spread Ellie’s notoriety nationwide, but how much information that gets out about her during Part II is uncertain and minimal, so it is possible these factions will just stay in the past.
Rattlers
The Rattlers are largely fodder and plot drivers so Ellie and Abby can meet in specific circumstances at the end of Part II. I don’t think they’ll have a huge bearing on the overarching plot, and they could easily never show up again, but I think bringing them back as an enemy to encounter would be reasonable.
My idea is we’ll get to kill these slavers again in Part III’s Abby and Lev episode, what better way to reintroduce the players to Abby than to let them use her physical prowess to remorselessly murder some of the worst of what humanity has to offer. Sounds like a fun encounter to kick off Abby’s minor part in the story.
Maybe she will feel differently about killing them after her quest for revenge with Joel didn’t lead to the catharsis she hoped for? Maybe she’ll want to spare people, and this could be a mechanic added as an option, or maybe Abby is still ruthless and we get to see her pile drive some slavers spines through their mouths; that would be fun too.
FEDRA and the Atlanta QZ
First mentioned in the HBO show by the FEDRA soldier Joel sells drugs to (and later beats to death); the Atlanta QZ is said to have a big factory of bullets and pills. In either show or game canon, this is the first we have heard of the settlement, it could possibly be the biggest in the USA, or what remains of it that is, given that FEDRA is seemingly disconnected, fighting countless civil wars across the continental US. I would be really interested in seeing Ellie have a portion of the game occur in this possible Atlanta QZ. Within a giant city they could introduce a lot of interesting new characters and plot lines. This could also provide some interesting parallels between Ellie and Joel as well from his time in Boston QZ at the start of Part I.
I think FEDRA will have a larger story presence than in Part II, but they will still be the crumbling fascist remains of the old world clinging to their iron rule as best as they can. Maybe we will get to meet some of the remaining FEDRA leadership running things in Atlanta and dive a bit deeper into the behind the scenes of how society is run in a FEDRA controlled QZ. I think ultimately for FEDRA we’ll see a house of cards barely holding together before the fall in Part III.
New Florida Faction (NFF)
In Part III we will surely see some new factions to add to the ever expanding lore of the universe, I’d really love to see a group there that worships the cordyceps in the as of yet unexplored in universe location of Florida. We hear some admiration towards the infection from David in Episode 8 of the HBO adaptation; I think I’d like to see this idea expanded to a whole group, they could be enamoured with the idea of the cordyceps “oneness”. Maybe this group will hear of an immune girl and be driven to find her and bring her to their massive place of worship.
I think Florida would be a good candidate for this faction of cordyceps worshippers because Florida itself is a unique environment and biome we haven’t seen so far. The hot and humid climate could make for some interesting infected evolutions; maybe the infected will have connected itself over an entire swamp to create a unique horde? Not to mention Florida's crazy weather and wildlife. Maybe Part III will be inspired by MGS and we'll see some alligators to battle. I would love to see a windy hurricane using PS5 tech.
Story Outline/Overview
So now that we’ve established some core ideas, let’s see if we can make a quick and simple outline. Something to be mindful of is the plot and story must incite and be congruent with some exciting combat focused gameplay that the series has grown to excel at. Also I’ve largely been inspired by other people’s speculation (like TLOUStrategist for example) and I will also be reusing ND’s unused ideas; again, I’m not a writer.
Log line:
As word of an immune girl spreads across the US, two factions descend on Jackson, and among the chaos Ellie is kidnapped. She must journey across the US to escape her captors to return to the people she loves in Jackson. We’ll see Ellie wrestle with various groups trying to decide her destiny in a multi perspective story about living for the people you love, and the lengths people go to do so.
Playable characters, Ellie, Maria, Abby and/or Lev, Tommy and some other new antagonists who are Anti-Joel figures in the story, characters trying to decide Ellie’s destiny for her. I think it would be fun to play a small section as each antagonist to help set the themes and tone.
The first thing the player sees is the start screen, and it has an important role in setting the tone for the player. Part II executed this really well. Something along the lines of Ellie alone, bleeding, back facing the player, at a campfire that has gone out makes sense to me for the story as I have interpreted it.
How this will be broken down episode by episode I’m not yet sure, but these are the main beats I’ve got for now, I’ll be using the template from Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat to map out the outline.

Outline TLDR
2 years after Part II Ellie still loves Dina, Maria thinks she should lead, Ellie is struggling with trauma still
Abby tells Fireflies where Ellie is, new leader still wants to make cure
Abby and Lev leave to save people and bring them to Catalina, exit story
Infected Worshipping faction find where Ellie is, everyone descends on Jackson simultaneously in a big battle
Ellie is captured and brought to Florida, Fireflies occupy Jackson and kill Maria, Tommy defects to Fireflies
Ellie fights and escapes infected worshippers, learns to live in harmony with infected
Meets new crew then sneaks into the Atlanta QZ
Meets a lover, Atlanta is destroyed by infected/rebel conflict
Ellie returns to and liberates Jackson from the Fireflies, tragically kills Tommy
Becomes a leader of New Jackson, accepted despite her immunity, gets to live out her days in peace, the cure is living well and with love, the end.
Well this hit the maximum post length pretty easily, I could fit a lot more in here, but a limit is good. Hope you enjoyed my thoughts, these ideas will only get better with your discussion, so feel free to comment as you please. It feels good to finally put my thoughts on this game into words; I love this universe a lot and just wanted to write the game I would like to play. Now just to wait for the inevitable better game Naughty Dog makes.
Cheers!

2023.05.16 04:04 TheLastofUsPartIII TLOU 3 edit 2

I don’t think Part III will undo the consequences of Part I’s ending.
I think the cure can’t happen not only for that reason, but because the infection in TLOU thematically represents some of the worst parts of humanity. The violence, the reckless hate and tribalism; these are all things that throughout history humanity has had to constantly work to fight against and try to evolve past to create civilised societies. There is no cure for these parts of humanity, just like there won’t be a cure for the narrative equivalent, the infection.
Saving humanity will happen on a more character level, like Joel bonding with and saving Ellie eventually restores his humanity, Abby saving Yara and Lev restores hers, and Ellie letting Abby live after nearly drowning her restores Ellie’s (or at least starts her journey to do so).
My theory is Ellie’s main arc in the final chapter of her story will be her transformation into a leader for a better tomorrow in the new world, a hopeful and inspiring leader in ‘New Jackson’ at the end of Part III.
Opening Image
*Ellie alone, bloodied, captured in a dirty cell carriage being pulled by animals along a mountain road towards a storm away from the sun setting on Jackson, where smoke, fire and gunshots can be seen/heard in the backdrop. Camera pans slowly over to show us the battle in Jackson
*Quick scene where the player runs around as Maria trying to help citizens of Jackson during the chaos, eventually run into an antagonist who says someone told him Maria was in charge, Maria confirms her identity, as she does the man shoots and kills her. Get the tension up right away so the following scenes are nerve wracking.
Set Up/Theme Stated
*Dina’s new bf is moving in, Ellie doesn’t have many new relationships, just helps out Dina and JJ whenever they let her
*Ellie has moved into a new place near the wall in Jackson so she can sneak out whenever she wants (show off new rope mechanics right away) and get peace and quiet, or kill something, she’s working on her trauma still
*2 years post Part II, Jackson is bustling and getting full, nearest QZ collapsed, lots of new migrant families
*a new family has moved into Joel’s old house, Ellie has converted the farmhouse she had with Dina into a little shrine, or maybe has a small shrine in her new place, dedicated to Joel and all her other loved ones.
*Ellie spends most of her time going around Jackson being helpful, constantly picking up shifts to do difficult work, helping less capable members of the community. She knows how to do everything around town and is well respected but she is still traumatized and complicated, mostly keeping to herself during quiet hours.
*Dina says to Ellie she needs to move on to be able to love herself and love other people in the future. Ellie laughs her off, says some Joel line like “I’ll take what I can get” in regards to the love she gets from Dina and JJ, something like that to display her current state is lacking and where she needs to grow towards. Also a conversation with Maria early on to help set up Ellie’s journey to regain her humanity and claim her destiny as she chooses it. Maria says she should choose for herself but she would make a great leader for the community, and to consider it.
*Tommy is bitter and lonely and has a contentious relationship with Ellie, mostly is on the outs with everyone in town. His injuries and actions have taken their toll. We'll have a scene or two here setting up their fractured relationship.
*Some simple gameplay segments as Ellie during this part, stuff around town, a patrol etc. Very much like Part II’s beginning but with some new characters, a Maria and Ellie patrol mission sounds fitting.
More Set Up
*Directly after the events of Part II and about 2 years before the events of Part III, the Fireflies kick off the events of this part of the story
*A scene in the Catalina casino ballroom with the council members of the fireflies deciding on their future. One leader has the original vision for fireflies but distorted to fit his world view, some want to stay isolated on Catalina, and others want to venture out to help save people and bring them back to Catalina (Abby and Lev camp).
*Abby is asked about the immune girl. A new antagonist wants to try and create the cure to remake society, militantly follows original firefly vision, Abby reluctantly lets them know Ellie is alive and where she is, but that she wants nothing to do with it and they are stupid for trying. New leader shows off an old student of Jerry’s who thinks with the old research in the Salt Lake hospital and Ellie’s brain they could make the cure. This causes a rift in the fireflies and they break off to follow their own goals.
*Gameplay as Abby or Lev during this part, before the fireflies break off the firefly groups kill the Rattlers together
*One sect of fireflies led by Antagonist journey to Utah and Jackson to finish what Marlene started, some stay in Catalina, some depart with Abby and Lev
*Scene in the New Florida Faction where one Firefly has defected to let this other group know an immune girl is alive who can help them accomplish their goals for creating their own version of society that is in symbiosis with the infected. They start their journey to Jackson to capture Ellie.
*Also some gameplay as the antagonists during this section to introduce them to the players and show how love drives them in negative ways
Catalyst
*The infected worshippers (NFF) journey to Jackson to capture the immune girl and treat her as a messiah to merge infected and humans forever, the Fireflies journey to Jackson to kill Ellie for the cure
*Maybe The Fireflies infiltrated Jackson like the early draft of Part II and use a Trojan Horse maneuver?
*Big battle in Jackson as both factions arrive, Tommy defects to Fireflies, Maria is killed, Fireflies occupy Jackson to find Ellie, and reveal her immunity to the captured citizens
*In the fight, a young Jackson girl that matches Ellie’s description is captured by members of the NFF
*They question her about a brown haired immune girl with a tattoo on her arm, and the girl decides to pretend she is Ellie.
*The NFF capture her and start to flee
*Actual Ellie sees this confrontation and follows after the captors far out of Jackson
*Ellie almost escapes with the girl before they are caught
*Perceived leader of group kills the girl in front of Ellie after seeing her scar and they journey back to their home base in Florida
*Camera shot to match opening scene of Ellie being taken away
Debate/Break into Two
*Ellie won’t give in to her captors, but is exhausted and atrophied after the month long trip to her new location in the swamps of Florida. She is strung up to be crucified. The crazed leader of the NFF brings an infected over to bite Ellie so they can confirm her immunity. She is left up for 24 hours before being declared a messiah of sorts. Does Ellie give in and accept her role as a figurehead for this infected loving cult, or will she escape to choose her own destiny? Obviously she doesn’t stay, but she believes Jackson might be destroyed and feels lost.
*In this section Ellie learns more about living in harmony with the infected, just not to the extreme the NFF take it. She learns techniques about how to guide and attract hordes among other things. Eventually she is able to flee and kill some of these crazies in cover of a massive hurricane. Big Set Piece.
B Story
*Ellie journeys through the swamps of Florida, following a compass north, barely surviving, and only knowing she wants to get back to Jackson and Dina, if they're even alive.
*She encounters a group of young survivors who take her in and help her recover. Ellie reveals she is unsure if her home is still standing. They reveal they have a plan to break into the Atlanta QZ and Ellie joins in.
*We get a section of the story exploring the massive Atlanta QZ, Ellie meets several new characters there, love interest, friends, FEDRA leader, Rebels/Fireflies etc.
*As despair sets in, Ellie succumbs to her fate of staying in the oppressive life of the QZ. It is a sort of comfort for her as she spent the first 14 years of her life growing up in a FEDRA controlled QZ. She falls back into old habits and routines, doing what she can to scrape by before eventually getting sucked into another rebel conflict.
Fun and Games
*Ellie’s new friends introduce her to the Atlanta Fireflies (or some equivalent group I’m not sure if it matters), she reluctantly joins in as the conflict escalates. This section would mostly be focused on Ellie meeting someone she can love, learning that FEDRA and the Fireflies live the wrong way, and that Ellie wants to get back to Jackson and live a loving life there. Some fun chases and set pieces of violence throughout this section, some battles among factions in the city limits.
Midpoint
*Eventually during the main conflict of this arc, a massive infected horde attack and boss infected bigger than rat king descend on Atlanta, let loose or attracted by the FEDRA/Rebel conflict. Fun set pieces of infected taking over Atlanta as Ellie and some of her new friends and other rebels escape.
Bad Guys Close In
*Now Ellie has been forced out of her temporary comfort in the Atlanta QZ. Her new group has some internal dissent following the disaster and split up. With nowhere else to go, Ellie regains her drive to return to Jackson. Maybe someone from Jackson followed Ellie's trail and is killed just as they reunite.
All is Lost/Dark Night of the Soul
*Ellie is all alone, wracked by the high of seeing a familiar face followed by the harrowing low of their death. She is unsure if Jackson still exists, and abandoned by her new crew. She must dig down and find her inner resolve to give everything she has for the people she loves and somehow make it to Jackson on a sliver of hope it still stands.
This is also where we could put the Tommy episode, setting up more info about him and the Fireflies, giving us a Joel flashback where living for your loved ones is emphasized.
Break Into Three
*Ellie had one good connection with one of the crew members, a potential love interest, so Ellie decides to not give up and use conversations the characters had relating to the central themes to convince that one crew member to come with her to Jackson.
Finale
*Using everything Ellie has learned over the course of the story, she returns to Jackson. Ellie will defeat Tommy in a tragic battle and lay him to rest. She’ll then help free the people of Jackson and retake the rest of the town before killing the fanatic Firefly leader and ending their pursuit of the cure. Ellie has learned her life is worth living and she is capable of leading others towards a good life.
Final Image
*Ellie surrounded by loved ones, accepted in spite of everyone knowing her immunity in New Jackson, and revered for her strength and resolve. Ready to live for and protect the life and people she loves, including herself, playing guitar around the fire to mirror the games starting screen, showing she has opened her heart to her purpose and the people she loves. She is able to live out her days in peace, leading the people of New Jackson. The cure is living well and living with love.
So that’s it, throw in lots of infected and human encounters and you’ve got a game!
Outline TLDR
Well this hit the maximum post length pretty easily, I could fit a lot more in here, but a limit is good. Hope you enjoyed my thoughts, these ideas will only get better with your discussion, so feel free to comment as you please. It feels good to finally put my thoughts on this game into words; I love this universe a lot and just wanted to write the game I would like to play. Now just to wait for the inevitable better game Naughty Dog makes.
Cheers!

2023.05.12 00:34 TheLastofUsPartIII A Speculation Attempt on the Last of Us Part 3. Alternate Title: The HBO Game. (Long Essay, almost 1 hour read, TLDRs available)

Disclaimer: This is all for fun, I am not a writer; Naughty Dog will come up with something better than I can. I love Part I and II equally, if Part III does indeed get made it will surely be awesome too. Hope you enjoy my speculation, if you disagree with any of my thoughts or interpretations, that’s okay .Feel free to generate your own discussion in the comments.
Abby and Lev get a small part and then maybe their own spin off game in the future if there is fan demand. Skip down to the outline if you want a less exhaustive read.
First Things First/Getting Some General Thoughts Out of the Way
What could the rumoured third installment of The Last of Us have in store for players? Where are our characters in their development/arc so far? Will this be the conclusion to Ellie’s story? What common theories are likely? We’ll have to get started with some assumptions and interpretations of the series and characters before tackling an outline. First one being, the game canon will take some inspiration from the show, given they share a creator.
A Game Series Finale and a TV Series Finale in One
Starting with the big ideas first, how will the story be structured? Given Druckmann’s history with advocating for TLOU to be adapted as a TV show during the film pitch days, directing/writing/producing on the eventual TV show, and now is rumoured to be treating Part III like a TV show (even rumored to be hiring a writer’s room and asking cinematographers to come work for him), it’s no stretch to assume Part III will possibly have a more television like structure. Not to mention this would make the eventual HBO adaptation easier to accomplish. This structure would be in contrast to Druckmann’s previous stated approach on Part II, in which he wanted that game to feel like a dense novel.
This third game could feature longer, disconnected chapters more deliberately paced liked episodes than Part I or II, full of miniature arcs and a wide cast of playable characters all converging to a satisfying finale, much like a prestige TV show.
My theory is Ellie’s main arc in the final chapter of her story will be her transformation into a leader for a better tomorrow in the new world. She will use her various skills, personality, and an eventual widespread knowledge of her immunity to make herself a hopeful and inspiring leader in ‘New Jackson’ at the end of Part III.
She doesn’t think much of it, but her desire to be a cure/world saviour probably plays into this motivation to be helpful.
To build on this, in Episode 8, David the cannibal preacher tells Ellie he sees that she is a natural leader too(This may have just been his grooming attempts, but I think there is a bit more there).
One of my favourite of Ellie’s journal entries, that I feel informs a bit of her potential mindset for Part III, is recorded after she encounters The Rattlers.
Helping Ellie reintegrate into society and helping her regain her personhood, agency and humanity.
The Seraphites apparently didn’t start hanging people until their leader, The Prophet, was killed by the WLF leader, Isaac.
I don’t think they’ll have a huge bearing on the overarching plot, and they could easily never show up again, but I think bringing them back as an enemy for Abby to encounter would be reasonable.
What kind of shambler or bloater type evolutions would appear? So far they have avoided aquatic/swimming infected variants, so I’m not sure if they would go that route, but there is a lot of potential there. They could also introduce more animal enemy variants, taking inspiration from MGS again, adding some swamp alligator enemies would be fun. Not to mention the plentiful other potentially dangerous animals in Florida like bears or panthers.
Log line:
As word of an immune girl spreads across the US, two factions descend on Jackson, and amongst the chaos Ellie is kidnapped.
Opening Image
Ellie alone, bloodied, captured in a dirty cell carriage being pulled by animals along a mountain road towards a storm away from the sun setting on Jackson, where smoke, fire and gunshots can be seen/heard in the backdrop. Camera pans slowly over to show us the battle in Jackson
Quick scene where the player runs around as Maria trying to help citizens of Jackson during the chaos, eventually run into an antagonist who says someone told him Maria was in charge, Maria confirms her identity, as she does the man shoots and kills her. Get the tension up right away so the following scenes are nerve wracking.
Set Up/Theme Stated
Dina’s new bf is moving in, Ellie doesn’t have many new relationships, just helps out Dina and JJ whenever they let her
Ellie has moved into a new place near the wall in Jackson so she can sneak out whenever she wants (show off new rope mechanics right away) and get peace and quiet, or kill something, she’s working on her trauma still
2 years post Part II, Jackson is bustling and getting full, nearest QZ collapsed, lots of new migrant families
a new family has moved into Joel’s old house, Ellie has converted the farmhouse she had with Dina into a little shrine, or maybe has a small shrine in her new place, dedicated to Joel and all her other loved ones.
Ellie spends most of her time going around Jackson being helpful, constantly picking up shifts to do difficult work, helping less capable members of the community. She knows how to do everything around town and is well respected but she is still traumatized and complicated, mostly keeping to herself during quiet hours.
Dina says to Ellie she needs to move on to be able to love herself and love other people in the future.
Tommy is bitter and lonely and has a contentious relationship with Ellie, mostly is on the outs with everyone in town. His injuries and actions have taken their toll. Tommy will be a bit of a Darth Vader figure in my story.
Some simple gameplay segments as Ellie during this part, stuff around town, a patrol etc. Very much like Part II’s beginning but with some new characters, a Maria and Ellie patrol mission sounds fitting.
More Set Up
Directly after the events of Part II and about 2 years before the events of Part III, the Fireflies kick off the events of this part of the story
scene in the Catalina casino ballroom with the councilmembers of the fireflies deciding on their future. One leader has the original vision for fireflies but distorted to fit his world view, some want to stay isolated on Catalina, and others want to venture out to help save people and bring them back to Catalina (Abby and Lev camp).
Abby is asked about the immune girl, new antagonist wants to try and create the cure to remake society, militantly follows original firefly vision, Abby reluctantly lets them know Ellie is alive and where she is, but that she wants nothing to do with it and they are stupid for trying. New leader shows off an old student of Jerry’s who thinks with the old research in the Salt Lake hospital and Ellie’s brain they could make the cure. This causes a rift in the fireflies and they break off to follow their own goals.
Gameplay as Abby or Lev during this part, before the fireflies break off the firefly groups kill the Rattlers together
part of fireflies led by Antagonist journey to Utah and Jackson to finish what Marlene started, some stay in Catalina, some depart with Abby and lev
Short scene in the New Florida Faction where one Firefly has defected to let this other group know an immune girl is alive who can help them accomplish their vague and threatening goals for creating their own version of society that is in symbiosis with the infected. They start their journey to Jackson to capture Ellie.
Also could have some gameplay as the antagonists during this section to introduce them to the players and show how love drives them in negative ways
Catalyst
infected worshippers (NFF) journey to Jackson to capture immune girl and treat her as a messiah to merge infected and humans forever, Fireflies journey to Jackson to kill Ellie for the cure
maybe one of the groups has infiltrated Jackson like the early draft of Part II and uses a Trojan Horse maneuver
big scuffle/battle in Jackson, Tommy defects to fireflies, Maria is killed, fireflies occupy Jackson to find Ellie,
in the fight, a young Jackson girl that matches Ellie’s description is captured by members of the NFF
They question her about a brown haired immune girl with a tattoo on her arm, and the girl decides to pretend she is Ellie.
The NFF guys capture her and start to flee
Actual Ellie sees the finale of this confrontation and follows after the captors far out of Jackson
Ellie almost escapes with the girl before they are caught
Perceived leader of group kills the girl in front of Ellie and they journey back to their home base in Florida
shot to match opening scene of Ellie being taken away
Debate/Break into Two
Ellie won’t give in to her captors, but is exhausted and atrophied after the month long trip to her new location in the swamps of Florida. She is strung up to be crucified. The crazed leader of the NFF brings an infected over to bite Ellie so they can confirm her immunity. She is left up for 24 hours before being declared a messiah of sorts. Does Ellie give in and accept her role as a weird leader for this infected loving cult, or will she escape to choose her own destiny? Obviously she doesn’t stay, but she believes Jackson might be destroyed and feels lost.
In this section Ellie learns more about living in harmony with the infected, just not to the extreme the NFF take it. She learns techniques about how to guide and attract hordes amongst other things. Eventually she is able to flee and kill some of these crazies after some big infected disaster ends up destroying their community. Big Set Piece.
B Story
Ellie journeys through the swamps of Florida, following a compass north, barely surviving, and only knowing she wants to get back to Jackson and Dina.
She encounters a group of young survivors who take her in and help her recover. Ellie reveals she is unsure if her home is even still standing. They reveal they have a plan to break into the Atlanta QZ and Ellie joins in.
We get a section of the story exploring the massive Atlanta QZ, Ellie meets several new characters there, love interest, friends, FEDRA leader, Rebels/Fireflies etc.
As despair sets in, Ellie succumbs to her fate of staying in the oppressive life of the QZ. It is a sort of comfort for her as she spent the first 14 years of her life growing up in a FEDRA controlled QZ. She falls back into old habits and routines, doing what she can to scrape by before eventually getting sucked into another rebel conflict.
Fun and Games
Ellie’s new friends introduce her to the Atlanta Fireflies (or some equivalent group I’m not sure if it matters), she joins in as the conflict escalates. This section would mostly be focused on Ellie learning that FEDRA and the fireflies live the wrong way, and that Ellie wants to get back to Jackson and live a loving life there. Some fun chases and set pieces of violence throughout this section, some battles among factions in the city limits.
Midpoint
Eventually during the main conflict of this arc, a massive infected horde attack + boss type bigger than rat king descend on Atlanta, possibly let loose by Ellie’s actions during the New Florida Faction arc, or the FEDRA/Rebel conflict. Fun set pieces of infected taking over Atlanta as Ellie and some of her new friends and other rebels escape.
Bad Guys Close In
Now Ellie has been forced out of her temporary “comfort” in the Atlanta QZ and with nowhere else to go, she regains her drive to return to Jackson. Or maybe someone from Jackson followed her trail and finds her? Either way, her new group has some internal dissent following the disaster and they don’t go with Ellie to Jackson.
All is Lost/Dark Night of the Soul
Ellie is all alone, unsure if Jackson still exists, and abandoned by her new crew. She must dig down and find her inner resolve to give everything she has for the people she loves and somehow make it to Jackson on a sliver of hope it still stands.
This is also where we could put the Tommy episode/backstory with Joel, setting up more info about him and the Fireflies, giving us a Joel flashback where living for your loved ones is emphasized.
Break Into Three
She had one good connection with one of the crew members, a character who becomes her Tess, so Ellie decides to not give up and use conversations the characters had relating to the central themes to convince that one crew member to come with her to Jackson.
Finale
Using everything Ellie has learned over the course of the story, she returns to Jackson to face Tommy and the Fireflies. Ellie will defeat Tommy in a tragic battle, ideally with him seeing the error of his ways and being taken in to be redeemed. She’ll then help free the people of Jackson and retake the rest of the town before killing the fanatic Firefly leader and ending their pursuit of the cure. Ellie has learned her life is worth living and she is capable of leading others towards a good life.
Final Image
Ellie surrounded by loved ones in New Jackson, ready to live for and protect the life and people she loves (including herself) playing guitar around the fire to mirror the games starting screen, showing she has opened her heart to her purpose and the people she loves. She is able to live out her days in peace, leading the people of New Jackson. The cure is living well and living with love.
So that’s it, throw in lots of infected and human encounters and you’ve got a game!
Outline TLDR
2 years after Part II Ellie still loves Dina, Maria thinks she should lead, Ellie is struggling to build new relationships
Abby tells Fireflies where Ellie is, new leader still wants to make cure
Abby and Lev leave to save people and bring them to Catalina, exit story
Infected Worshipping faction find where Ellie is, everyone descends on Jackson simultaneously in a big battle
Ellie is captured and brought to Florida, Fireflies occupy Jackson and kill Maria
Ellie fights and escapes infected worshippers, learns to live in harmony with infected
Meets new crew then sneaks into the Atlanta QZ
Meets a lover, Atlanta is destroyed by infected/rebel conflict
Ellie returns to and liberates Jackson from the Fireflies
Becomes a leader of New Jackson
Lives happily ever after with loved ones new and old
Well this hit the maximum post length pretty easily, I could fit a lot more in here, but a limit is good. Cheers!

2023.05.05 05:45 ConstructionGlass510 Canon

There were also two people who didn’t tie their ropes properly, I remember, on Denali. They were European, but I don’t remember from where. I just remember that they were roped up to each other, but not to the mountain, and one fell and took the other down with him. Luckily, one of the guys straddled a rock that stopped them from plummeting to their death, and John Race helped them get back up to the ridge.
There was another guy who followed a Chinese woman up Ama Dablam. He had been staying the course, and acclimating at camp 2. But she wanted to summit faster, and he had developed feelings for her, so he followed her and they both got pulmonary edema and had to get airlifted off the mountain.
There was another one that Sam saw, on his descent of the Grand Teton, where a guy had a water knot tied in his rope that he never redid, because it was a really secure knot. But bit by bit, it came loose and it came all the way out when he was with Sam, and the guy fell to his death.
It goes on and on. You make a little mistake, and you die. But there’s usually a lot of mistakes leading up to it.
But at any rate, you can’t just use as many safety precautions as possible and hope for the best. Time is also a factor, and so something that makes you marginally safer but slows you down enough that you’ll be at a place where rockfall is happening for a long time isn’t worth it.
The other thing about climbing risk is that it has a lot to do with frequency. So, if you do it once in a while, you don’t need to be so cautious. But if you do it all the time, your risk is a lot higher, just by probability. And so, many guides have a lot of dead friends, and a lot of guides die.
Hearing about it reminds you of that scene in ‘The Incredibles’ where Edna explains to Mr. Incredible why he can’t have a cape by telling him about all the super heroes who died because of their cape. I remember that Talley really loved that line: “no capes!”
Anyways, Seraphim and I parted ways after the mountaineering discussion, and decided that one day, maybe we would go on a hike together.
That day I also bought the book ‘Combatting Cult Mind Control’ on Amazon for $20.32.
That day, I also took three screenshots of prayer books, on Google shopping and on Amazon, which were mostly in Russian, and most of which which had the three-bar-cross on the front. One was a children’s prayer book published by the All Saints of Russia Orthodox Church, in a bright red color with gold on the cover. I looked at it for quite some time after finding it, and then finally ordered it some time later. Another was a gray ‘Book of Commemoration for the Living and the Dead,’ by Holy Trinity Monastery.
I also took a screenshot of the OrthoWiki page on the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, and then three photographs of St. Alexandra Feodorovna, the last Empress of Russia and the mother of the five famous Romanov children, who was executed with her children by the f*cking Bolsheviks.
The first is in black-and-white and she’s in white with a hat like a cake, and a scarf that’s like it’s got feathers, and wears pearl earrings. The next is colored in, and she’s wearing maroon with black at the neck, a diamond necklace, earrings, and a small five-point crown. The last is black-and-white, and she wears a white dress with bows, a pearl necklace with two layers, a headband, and a star on her head.
I don’t remember what I did the rest of that day.
But anyways, I had work the next day, until 6:00, and then went to Sts. Peter and Paul afterwards for the Great Compline with the Canon of St. Andrew, recited at the beginning of Lent in many traditions.
I think this was the day I was supposed to go to the ‘creating your legacy’ Rosh Chodesh group for women, but didn’t go.
At work, I saved a painting of the marriage of Tsar Nicholas II to Empress Alexandra. It’s an Orthodox ceremony, and they both hold candles in front of a Gospel Book. She has got a gold cape with ermine trim on it, a silver dress, and a small silver crown with purple and a veil that goes behind, and he wears a red coat with gold stuff on it, and black pants.
The Priests and Bishops all wear gold, the women behind all wear white with red ribbons on them, the men black suits with the same ribbons, and the room is white with gold ornament, red curtains, and a maroon-and-pink striped carpet.
I also saved two pictures of “Jesus,” by a Mormon artist named Liz Lemon Swindle, one in which he’s rubbing his hands together and looks like a hippie scheming to take people’s money. He’s got a brown robe with some kind of a beige vest over it. In the other, he sitting and talking a small girl wearing a white dress and grabbing her toes, and he looks like a creep. He’s wearing a white robe with something blue over it, and sandals, and he’s sitting next to her on a stone bench and leaning in to talk to her. There a little red flower in the lower left corner.
In both he’s got long, brown, really straight hair; like he flattened it with an iron.
During the day, I bought two rolls of bread to sustain myself.
And just before I left work, I grabbed a bottle of juice to bring to Jonah. He often was drinking mango juice from this brand called ‘Naked.’ I didn’t see that at Harmons, but instead got one called ‘Bolthouse,’ for $5.27.
I’d arranged with Sarah for an Uber at 5:14 or 5:15, and she agreed to call him around 6:00.
She texted me at 6:05 that the driver, Jesus, would be there in 9 minutes, in a silver Toyota Corolla, and then again at 6:07 that he’d be there in 6, at the Holladay library, because that’s where Talley and Sarah send Ubers, because they don’t know my address.
I remember wanting to be sure I didn’t miss it, but also wanting to get in touch with the guy across the way, Isaac, to retrieve the Orthodox Bulgarian wallet that I’d been told had arrived. He didn’t answer, and I never got the wallet. I also wanted to see if he had a silver blessed cross that I’d ordered from Russia, to his address by accident, but it never arrived.
Anyways, before I left, I gathered the presents for Jonah in a translucent white bag, which was what the whale came from at Amy, and my Jordanville prayer book, which I always took with me, and my toothbrush and toothpaste, and my light blue nightgown, into my ‘Ghostbuster’ backpack.
I don’t remember exactly, but I think I wore my black Harmons pants, not having time to change, and the red coat from Seraphim.
I don’t remember much about the Compline that night. But I do remember seeing Kimberly and “Davis,” who I do not like right now, as well as Joseph and Rebecca. Molly was there too, I think, wearing a striped skirt she wears a lot and handling a child so that everyone could see, and admire her “motherly affection.”
Seraphim had invited me, but couldn’t pick me up since he was picking up a vacuum, and I arrived late.
Jesus arrived at the Holladay library at 6:16, and pulled out onto Murray-Holladay at 6:17.
The Canon went from 6:00-7:30, and so I missed the beginning.

2023.04.18 12:29 carnajo Photo printing on Pixma G640

Hi everyone,
Just wondering what programmes and settings to use to get the best quality photos printed using a Pixma G640 printer. Does the programme even matter at the end of the day since the settings are at a driver level? I used the "Easy PhotoPrint Editor" app from Canon but it wouldn't let me set the quality to fine even though I had the Paper Plus Glossy II photo paper selected (which seems like is the only paper that can let you choose "fine". I also tried printing directly from the native "photos" app in windows.
I don't have Photoshop (it's expensive) but I do have Paint Shop Pro.
Kinda new to this. Hoping to get photos as one would get from a photo printing shop (or as near as possible).

2023.04.14 23:52 wtfisrobin Does bit depth matter for Black & White footage?

I'm having a little bit of trouble wrapping my head around bit depth.
I'm shopping around/exploring my options for a new camera. My current daily driver is a good ole Canon 5D Mark II. I shoot mostly black & white video, but I'm running into a lot of problems with sky and gradient banding, and artifacts when I play with the contrast basically at all (I have a tiny bit of wiggle room, but not much). If my primary video interest is black & white video, do I need to be concerned with bit depth and colorspace as I look at cameras? Or should my only concern be resolution?
For instance, should I still spring for a camera that has 10/12bit 4:2:2 or should I focus more on investing those same dollars into a camera that might be standard 8bit 4:2:0 but can shoot in 6k or something?
bonus question for those with experience: should I bother with a monochrome camera?

2023.04.04 09:01 ElnuDev Canon LBP6230dw printer on NixOS

I'm trying to set up my Canon LBP6230dw printer on NixOS, and I'm having some trouble. First I'd like to mention that I have gotten it working on Linux before, on Pop!_OS, using Canon's driver download.
I've gone through the instructions on the Printing section on the NixOS wiki, but my printer model isn't coming up. I've tried the cnijfilter2 for support for more Canon models, but still nothing. The closest model that comes up in the OpenPrinting CUPS UI at http://localhost:631/ is "Canon LBP622C/623C UFR II," and when I tried setting it up with that model name, it just shows an error 'Processing - "Unable to locate printer "Canon0e5e2e.local"."' What should I do? Should I try to packaging Canon's driver download...? Or am I just out of luck here? Thanks in advance.

2023.04.03 23:20 StrategySilent9360 Printing error for a single domain user.

Printer: Canon ir adv c3525i - no print server - connected over the network, wired
I have a user that submitted a ticket for not being able to print. I removed the printer and reinstalled the drivers and when I log in with my account (domain admin), I can print just fine. As soon as we switch user accounts, that user will print and an error occurs while the document is in the print queue. Doesn't matter the document or the application the user prints from. So I clear the queue switch back to my account and try to print, but the same problem occurs. But only after the other user has tried to print. I reinstall the printer and I can print just fine. The other user logs in receives the error and gets stuck in the queue, and I log back in and get the same result. This was done on a Dell Lat 5420 with Windows 11. I reset the computer and reinstalled the OS. Same results. Next, I had the user try to print from a different computer (Dell Lat 7200 2 in 1, Win 10) and the exact same results occur.
Some interesting notes from the user:
My best guess to the problem is a corrupted file in the user profile. I don't know where to look exactly, or maybe the problem is caused by something else.
Thank you for any help or leads to solving this. Please ask me any questions if there is something I am missing.

2023.03.28 06:46 Jameson51697 My First REAL PAX East Experience

My First REAL PAX East Experience
I don't know how to start this, but I'll start typing and see where I go with this.
I will say this first off, this is not my first PAX East visit, I visited last year's but only on Sunday as a bit of a "test run" if you will. This year, I decided to go with my close friend from high school on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I skipped Sunday only because I knew Sundays were slower and shorter. Plus, I didn't want to take too many days off of work.
I slept at his brother's house which conveniently was close to Boston, so I managed to save money on hotel expenses. I still have to thank him later, but maybe after my next paycheck comes in. (My bank will kill me later. *nervous laughter*)
I live in Connecticut, so driving to his brother's house was no problem. So to anyone who lives in Mass, "Hello Neighbors!" (And I ain't talking about the horror game either.)
I was a bit tired considering I had to work the day before and came back late at night to do so final checks when packing up. I had a hard time going to sleep, probably due to the excitement. I was able to rest my eyes enough though. After all, geeks don't need sleep, they need answers! (Is that how the old saying goes again?)
Thursday, March 23rd, 2023 (Wow! Lots of 23's):
Once I got there, I did a lot of exploring, did most of my shopping that day, saw some panels, and some speedruns at GDQ, and watched a concert by Bit Brigade. I got their CDs as well. I don't remember the last time I bought CDs or Vinyl Records, but it was a fun and nostalgic experience in many ways. The Bit Brigade performance with the guy speedrunning DuckTales and Mega Man II is my favorite moment thus far.
I bought a crap ton of t-shirts. Most of many spending went to TeeTurtle alone. I mean, buy 4 get 1 free, or buy 6 get 2 free? You're basically getting another t-shirt for free every time you buy another. If I wasn't so poor yet, I would buy their whole stock. The Pokemon food pun shirts at Glitch Gaming Apparel were also cool. I got the Baja Blastoise one because that one was dope. Plus, it had Squirtle Squad triangle sunglasses. That makes it even better. The Chikorita one as the Chiquita banana logo was also cool. I always thought of that brand of banana with that Pokemon in particular, so seeing it was great. I didn't get it though, but I might have to one day.
Speaking of Pokemon, my friend is a big fan of it. I am too, but he enjoys it more than I do, so it was nice to see him having a good time. I probably saw at least one of every Eeveeution cosplayer there. (I wonder if they all know each other.)
Anyways, I left the concert after the Street Fighter movie bit was going on, got some quick shut-eye on the car ride back home and slept for the night, then woke up in the morning to get ready for day two. It takes about an hour to get from my friend's brother's house to PAX and about another back, provided traffic ain't too terrible.
Friday, March 24th, 2023:
Friday was a bit of a crazy day for me. That day, I lost my debit card and was in a panic throughout most of the ride over. I have never had this happen to me before, so this was a horrifying experience for me. Thankfully, I found it in the lost and found area at the convention center, so the crisis was averted. The staff there deserve my utmost respect and they're "No stealing" policy is extremely appreciated.
I may have left it was purchasing some Bit Brigade CDs, which is when I last used it, so thank god I found it, otherwise, I would be screwed with purchasing food and whatnot. (As well as buying 3DS games before the eShop closes. Rest in Peace Wii-U and 3DS eShop's. They just closed tonight as we speak.)
I also got to see The Living Tombstone before the show when looking for my card. I didn't notice him at first since I never saw his face before until then, but it was nice to see him.
So that day, I decided to see some more panels. There were a lot of them that interested me, but I had to pick which ones to do since a lot overlapped with each other. For any others, I would have to watch any from the live stream, if they had any, later. I brought a phone charger this time since I forgot to bring one when dropping my stuff off yesterday. I had my good camera, a Canon style, for getting some crisp pictures that were better than my silly phone, and my messenger bag with my switch when I got bored (I never touched it though, I was too distracted by a lot of things there), and a Lapras plush I had from home for emotional support after losing my card, as well as my Wild Bill's mug from last year for refills. (The Lapras' name is Lazu BTW. A perfect name for a lovely blue gemstone.)
My favorite panel I saw was the "Getting Into the Gaming Industry Part I & Part II" one. I was moved, touched, and inspired by that one particularly.
You see, a bit about myself, I want to create my own indie game. I know, big surprise there (not really) and have recently graduated with my Bachelor's in Computer Science after so many years of blood, sweat, and tears in trying to finish my studies. I'm introverted just like everyone else and have a bit of social anxiety. I tend to be silent and secluded because I often feel too self-conscious of my own being. Not to mention, I have a hard time expressing myself and understanding human emotions. But when I went up to ask a question to the panel hosts, I felt nervous but also encouraged to speak up for myself. My question was along the lines of:
"What's the best advice to give to someone, who wants to get into a certain career, gaming or not, who may have social anxiety or any kind of anxiety?"
This was not only personal to me, but to my younger sister, who just moved out and wants to start her own life, but also has some serious, if not much worse anxiety than me. I don't remember the answer they mentioned but I was satisfied to speak up and I felt good about myself. I never got their business cards though, but I will remember that as my greatest moment there.
I also took a heck of a lot of notes in a notebook I brought with me. I don't why I did, my brain told me to and I just did and now I feel great I did. It was as if my inner conscience knew this would happen and I thank my past and future self for that. It was still weird though being one of the only ones with pencil and paper while everyone took pictures of the slides (I did that too), but I was glad nonetheless. If anything, it helped me retain the information I was given. (Thanks school, for preparing me for that. I still don't like you though.)
I then played one game down in the exhibition hall called "Tunic" from Finji, a game I have yet to buy off my Steam wishlist. The lines at those games are awfully long, but Finji's was shorter that time, so it was nice to play. I got to the first boss but died; I was amazed at how far I got. My first game to play there, and I learned that the hall closes at 6, so more panels to go to and a concert from Raspberry Pie and Living Tombstone. Never heard of Raspberry Pie until then. I joined their Discord, so I'm now a fan of their work. That first song with the Sonic Green Hills Remix was a great opening.
It's weird, every time I went up to the ballroom to go to the concerts, I had this weird "Why do I hear boss music" feeling every single time I slowly went up the escalator. I tend to fantasize by myself everywhere I go, so my wild imagination was in MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE. (Plankton Approves.)
For some other minor things that happened, I played the PAX XP scavenger hunt thing. I was on Team Tycho and got two specific badges that I thought were special to get. There were two QR codes on the TV monitors and lobby screen that would stay up for a short period of time and disappear. They were hard to scan due to the glare from the sun, so I had to do some creative measures and take a picture of the screen from my phone, then remember I had my Canon camera and take a picture of the phone screen, because I couldn't scan it from the phone itself, and then I scanned it from the camera screen and got the badges. I felt proud of that and even the staff members there thought that was impressive. They are now the best badges in my little collection. I never got the prize though, but I was satisfied with playing in the end. (My friend doubted me on that trick though but he was also glad to see it work.)
Then I and my friend helped another staff member after she dropped her trivia cards during a panel starting and we both got a free POG chip each. I didn't know POGs were still a thing until then. (Imagine if a POG had a POG Face emote on it. That would be some insane Poggerception. Mine had a BumbleBee on it.)
And that was it for day 2. Went back home and slept on the car ride and went to bed again when we got back, not losing any stuff this time. Although, I almost misplaced my Wild Bill's mug but remembered it at the Ukiyo-e Heroes pin booth that time. I got some cool dragon pins for me and my sister. Also, some shirts were for my family. Mom's birthday was on the 28th and my sister's was on the 22nd, so easy gifts there. They loved them.
Saturday, March 25th, 2023:
As per usual, got up early, went to the convention center, and played Pizza Tower's OST on the ride over on my earbuds for the 100th time because I love video game music, not just this game particularly but all game music. (Good game BTW.)
Not many panels this time, but I did do some games because I felt more confident in actually getting in there and playing a bit. I played a game called "Crystal Story Dawn of Dusk." It had that Earthbound/Mother 3 look to it and it was fun. Although I was terrible at it. I got stuck at that part with the shocking ghost enemies and would always get pinned to the wall. Hope to see more of it.
I would have tried "Cult of the Lamb" too, but I already played it, so it would be me just showing off to my buddy what I can do. I did get a hat though.
I then actually took the time to get in line for "Mina the Hollower," a game I knew before but never played by the same creators of Shovel Knight, Yacht Games. I liked it. It had a Zelda look with the Castlevania whip and aesthetic. Never thought I'd get far into the castle since I saw people struggling at that pit with the wolf and moving platforms to get to the castle. I only died once. It may have been because I studied the gameplay and the controls beforehand. I tend to be a fast learner at this stuff and would test out every control for a hands-on feel. All in all, good game. Will definitely wishlist that and then forget to even play it after buying too many games during a sale, but hopefully not. (The struggle is real.)
I also learned from my friend's brother and wife that PAX stands for Penny Arcade Expo. Penny Arcade is a webcomic that started in 1998 and was one of the first webcomics to be submitted on the Internet during its infancy. Newspapers were still a thing though. I wonder why they didn't put them there. Maybe they wanted it to be better spread there than in newspapers, or they were rejected by newspaper companies. I don't know, but it does explain the Team Gabe vs. Team Tycho on PAX XP. I may have to give them a read someday. I did get into webcomic reading lately.
Also, his brother and wife bought a card game called "Frost Haven," a 40 lb box that was SO heavy to carry. I hate to ask how much that beast was. They sure love their card games. Good for them.
After that, went to a DnD showcase with Acquisitions Inc. and got to experience DnD for the first time. I always wanted to play but am too introverted and shy to do so. I'm afraid of not doing it right. I also got a D20 dice from a grab bag at Foam Brain Games, one of their sponsors after learning about it during the show. The marshmallow Peep-like dragon pin is cute.
Finally, the usual sleep and go back home part was in place.
Sunday, March 26th, 2023:
The last day was me waking up at 7, getting packed up to go back home to Connecticut, leaving at 8, dropping off my friend at his apartment, playing some calming video game music on the ride over, get lost when trying to find a Dunkin' because we forgot to eat yesterday and the McDonald's was closed for some reason (probably the PAX East rush they couldn't handle), almost drive on the wrong side of the road (I'm sorry to the driver I freaked out, I don't know the roads well here and it's too early for me to wake up at 7), get back home at around 9:30 am, unpack and relax for a bit before going to work at noon to 5. (It was quiet at the Bowling Alley that day thankfully.)
After all that, I finally got to clean up my room, get rid of the security camera because I'm a paranoid bastard who doesn't want anyone stealing his stuff, and finally get some long-deserved rest for the night. Phew... that was a lot.
Final Thoughts:
So yeah, my experience at PAX East 23 was great. There were a few things that I found out about all this that I didn't like and don't take this as just nitpicking, it's more or less constructive criticism at best.
First off, money. Everything is expensive. From the hotels and tickets to the food and the merch. Of course, it makes sense. They have to get their money to keep the place running somehow. It would have been cool to get that official PAX East jacket though, but I couldn't afford it after what I spent. Plus, I can only drink so much Wild Bill's soda before I crave actual water.
Secondly, traffic is baaaaaaaad after everyone leaves for the night. Definitely will be coughing up money for a hotel next year if I can. I think my best bet is to get a hotel booking early as possible when the next tickets come out. But besides all those silly little gripes, I had fun.
And lastly, masks. I didn't mind wearing them, but those things get tiring to wear. I swear, I think I had a hard time thinking straight when making decisions on where to go next. Maybe a good bit of advice for them would be for people to show proof of vaccination so they don't have to wear them if they want. Make it a comfort thing. But I wouldn't mind wearing one again if I have to. I ain't an anti-vac person and Massachusetts is entirely different from my home state when it comes to these rules. Plus there are a lot of people there, best to be safe than sorry. I'm glad I brought my own handmade masks that day.
Sure, there was some small annoyance like people talking during panels when you're trying to listen, or my friend needing to rest a lot since he gets tired quickly (and also hungry), but I believe the positives outweigh the negatives in all of this. And the best part is, I'll be even more prepared next year. The more I go, the better I'll plan my days.
I will admit, I was sad to leave, and my only regret was not having enough courage to talk up at certain points, but maybe next year it'll be different. I'm going to keep improving myself and hopefully join the indie gaming industry and find my place in this world.
Thank you PAX East!
You made me feel welcome when I felt a bit lost and didn't belong in certain places I tread in. And hey, who knows? Maybe you'll see me up there in the panels making some silly stories or having my own booth for a game I want people to experience and learn from. (Or not. I have yet to decide on that.)
I love games, I love music, I love art, I love traveling, and most importantly, I love storytelling. They can be real or fake, weird or crazy, long or short, or just straight-up disturbing in some ways, but they are fun to make and tell. Writing and typing are how I get my thoughts out more clearly. (Telling stories has always been my best trait. At least, that's what my friends from high school told me.)
And lastly, thanks for reading this ridiculously long Reddit post. I seem to have a tendency of doing this to myself. The panel I listened to did tell me I should get out there and spread myself a bit with my thoughts and passions, and that's what I'm going to do. It's time I stop shutting myself in and become somebody for once. Again, thank you for reading and I hope you all have a wonderful and fun day!
TL;DR - I went to a convention. Did some cool stuff. I totally did not choke up during a certain panel. The concerts are rad. Wish my dad came with me, but I understand he was busy. I wonder what happened to that Banana Man who played music around the place. Ok, I'll stop talking now. Peace and Love!
PS: I might add more photos here. Or not, I still can't decide.
Edit: So I just added more photos since someone wanted to see more. Here ya go:
https://www.facebook.com/JimmyJoe1997/posts/pfbid0AKVjrWoZFvxtoGnunVQLmB1zzejVoNe1bciSC7RiR2SBwL5GGm7vV5fKJRJPEDtrl
If anyone finds any grammar errors btw, please let me know so I can fix them. Thanks!
Why did I even bother? I've never even played Doki Doki. Also, this image screams, \"This is fine\" all over, lol.
