What is the Best Used Project Car?
2023.06.10 23:59 BabadoodaPCs What is the Best Used Project Car?
I am currently driving a 2004 Toyota Tundra that I am going to pass on to my younger brother in 2ish years. I want to get a project car that I can work on for those 2 years that can become my daily driver once I pass on the Tundra. I have a bit of experience working on cars, but not a ton. I am happy to put in a decent amount of work and learn more about working on cars. I would be happy to buy a bit of a fixer upper and go from there. I made some requirements of the type of catruck I would be looking for. Any suggestions or recommendations would be awesome. Thanks!
- 4 Doors; I want something that can carry my friends or other cargo if needed
- Decent Gas Mileage; I don't want a gas guzzler like the Tundra, but something like a pickup wouldn't bother me either
- 2000 or Newer; I want something that will last for a while, but I'm not opposed to an older car if it is somewhat future proof
- Durable; I don't want weather to scare me, and I want something that will last with some work
- Cheap and Accessible Repairs; I want something that has good aftermarket support and is not extremely annoying to repair
- Room for Mods; I want something that I can have some fun with building and adding on to, again with the good aftermarket support
- Budget; I'm planning on something before 2006 or 2007, I don't want to break the bank and I would be happy to get a fixer upper
Thanks again for any help. I know this is probably too much to ask, but I just want something that fills some of the boxes if at all possible.

2023.06.10 22:09 HylianRacer Want opinions on what Tacoma to get
Hi everyone,
I’ve been lurking on this sub for the last couple months. I’m in the market for a third gen Toyota Tacoma. I have decided that I definitely want a double cab 4x4.
The dilemma I’m having is my local Toyota dealership is getting a 2023 SR in a couple weeks for $36,600 msrp. It comes with the all weather floor mats, bed mat, bed lights and bed step. All things I would want anyway. I’m fine with what the SR comes with (other than it doesn’t come with the power rear window).
I just saw a local Mazda dealership that has a 2021 Off-road with 28k miles for $38,500 with a clean CARFAX. That price seems pretty good. I guess the trade off here is not having a CPO warranty or Toyotacare. 28k miles is really nothing for a Toyota.
The Tacomas I have been looking at have been around the mid 30k range which has priced me out of some 4x4 SR5s, Off-roads and Sports with decent mileage. That’s why this Off-road caught my eye.
I guess the question is, would you go new and get the lowest trim level, or go used on a higher trim level?
I also wanted to mention that I’m a city boy that works an office job, but I want a truck for household stuff. I also want to be able to get out of the city to go fishing, and hiking/exploring. I won’t be using the truck for any crazy rock crawling or anything like that. Plus, I miss having a truck. I drove a 2000 Ford Ranger for 10 years and I miss the utility of a truck for everyday things.
Thanks everyone!

2023.06.10 17:42 youmizzed Impressive MPG In my First-Gen
I have an ‘04 SR5 2WD Double Cab with the smaller 4.7L V8, and after doing a little math at the pump, somehow managed like 17.5 MPG. Last week I challenged myself to get my fuel economy up to make my 45 minute commute more interesting, and it paid off I think. What do you guys/gals/people think? Has anybody managed better in a similar truck?

2023.06.08 02:42 SamVa79 2007 VCS, ABS, TPMS, Check Engine Light
Hey everyone to to the sub, not new to automotive work in the least.
Have the subject Tundra with the aforementioned lights.
Has the follow codes
DTCs for each will speed sensor missing signal
DTC for missing vehicle speed
Associated DTCs in the ECM, ABS/VCS for speed sensor faults and or DTCs in the other modules.
This occurred about a month after replacing a flooded charcoal canister. Part was replaced with a Rock Auto Source Standard Motor Products part. The part is when removed from the box is stamped Toyota with the Toyota part numbers.
Fixed the evap issue, but to remove the canister you disconnect the pig tail coming from the rear wheel speed sensors above the axle to the canister harness. I have triple checked this connection is tight, pins are good.
I just inherited the truck, it has sat more or less for 3 years, no sign of mice or squirrel damage anywhere.
Occasionally if you clear thr codes you can go 10 or 12 miles before they reset so it isn't an immediate hard fault. But it is very repeatable.
Any similar occurrences? It's pretty obvious the speed sensors are dropping out, and the ABS module isnt seeing vehicle speed. But do these have module faults often? Common wirining issues? Doubtful it the sensors themselves.

2023.06.07 03:32 franklin2199 Buying a Brand New Truck Instead of Paying Off Student Loan Debt?
Ok so here's some context, financials at the bottom:
(USA) (24M) I graduated college a year ago in May of 2022 with zero dollars to my name and have been working full-time for just over a year now. I finally feel as though I'm in a stable enough financial situation to consider buying a car. I'm currently still driving an old car I've had since high school, which is paid off. Problem is, it is getting to be very high mileage and needs a new catalytic converter to pass inspection which is up at the end of the month. I work in the construction industry and although a truck is not mandatory it would make things a lot more convenient for me. I'm looking to get something newer with better mpg and reliability.
Based on what I'm seeing from the used car markets, cars that are 2-3 years old are selling for almost the same price as new. Combine this with the fact that used car loan rates are 6-7%, while I see dealers offering 3-5% incentivized rates for new vehicles, and it seems like newer is the better option if they continue to hold their value.
I'm seriously considering the 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4WD Double Cab for $38k, for both the reliability and the way they seem to hold value over time. Is this a bad idea? I would like to eventually purchase a home and be able to move out of my parents house some day and don't want to make any bad decisions financially. Looking to put $15-20k down, trade in value about $8k, and finance $10k.
Would that down payment money be better off towards the balance of the loans? I know that its the logical answer, but it hardly feels like it would make a dent at this point. Feeling pretty hopeless about the size of the debt at this point. I figure if I'm going to be saving all this money living at home I can maybe afford to splurge on a newer vehicle?
Now for my financials
Salary - $63k/yr + $20k in bonuses this year = $83k in my first year
Rent - $0/month, Still live with parents
Private Student Loans - $130k, consolidated and refinanced at 5.7% for 15 years - $1100/month
Federal student Loans - $20k, planning for these to possibly be due this summer? About $100/month once consolidated to a graduated repayment plan for 15 years
Gas - About $350/month. Currently getting about 13mpg and commuting 60miles/day to work
Savings - $30k in a high yield savings account I have saved over the past year
401k - Contributing 6% to get max employer match of 3%
RothIRA - $250/month automatic deposits
Still on my parents health insurance, car insurance, cell phone plan
No credit card debt

2023.06.05 00:29 mthdwr Value of a 2017 Tundra 4x4, California
Hello all,
Time has come to sell my 2017 Tundra. It’s a SR5 Double Cab with TRD package. 52,000 miles. New tires, and it has line-x spray in bed liner, otherwise stock.
No accidents, and runs as it should. It’s dark gray so it has its fair share of scratches..
I think KBB was around 35k. It’s paid off and I’m looking for quick sale.. what would be a fair price to get it sold without a lot of hassle? Everything online seems so damn high, it’s real hard to get an accurate idea of what I should list it for. Not trying to squeeze every last dollar out of it, but I am buying another used vehicle and feel I’m paying a slight premium so don’t want to get screwed either. Thanks!

2023.06.04 18:02 kevinlove 06 Tundra 4.7 V8
Hey, would appreciate any input on this Tundra for sale in my area. 06 Tundra SR5 double cab 4x4 with 155k miles. Has some rust below the driver side door. Listed for $13k.
Timing belt was replaced around 70k miles, private seller unsure of lower ball joint. They've had it for a few months, purchased from dealer for around $14k. Having a mechanic check it out this week but would appreciate any input or opinions on this, specifically the rust and price.
photos edit: ended up walking away, mechanic found a few other things wrong that I hadn't considered. appreciate the comments and advice

2023.06.04 04:54 disciplinetemplego Mudflap for 2023 SR5 DoubleCab
Apparently my truck won’t accept the standard Toyota mudflap nor will most aftermarket units. The truck’s week guards don’t have the plastic cover that these attach to. Any recommendations for something simple that will work?

2023.06.03 16:39 After_Ad_9420 Does the truck I want exist?
Does anyone know if this combo exsists?
I want to find a 6 seater crewcab Tundra with the 6.5' bed.
I know the new tundras are available with the crewcabs and 6.5' beds but I think they eliminated having 6 seats as an option.
I have seen a double cab with an 8 foot bed (I think that was a '10), so the frame length is there for it.

I currently own a 2006 Tundra SR5. I am considering purchasing a used 2021 Tundra with the 5.7L V8. It is in very good condition and has about 20,000 miles.
Has anyone had any issues with this year model and engine?
