2023.06.08 19:39 hobard Post Mammoth Lakes Resupply

Howdy -
I rolled into Mammoth Lakes yesterday and I’m planning the next leg. Most of the resupplies to this point have been pretty straightforward, but there’s not a lot of info on this leg under these conditions.
With Tuolomne and Kennedy Meadows North being closed, I’m looking at a long haul to Sonora Pass, exiting east on SR108, road walking to 395 and hitching to Walker or Bridgeport.
Does this make sense or am I missing anything?
Also, anyone know what to expect regarding terrain on this leg relative to prior Sierra legs and how it may impact daily mileage?
Thanks in advance!

Watch Now: Spider Man: Across the Spider Verse Movie Online

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be in theaters beginning June 2. If you're wondering how and where you can watch it yourself, take a look at the information below.

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.

The much-anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is only a few weeks away, and fans can’t wait to see the new adventures of Miles Morales. Once the Sony Pictures-produced movie ends its theatrical run, it will come to the most popular streamers, including Netflix and Disney Plus. But when is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse coming to Netflix and Disney Plus? Here’s what you need to know.

'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' features the return of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy. Just before the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, producers of the feature have announced a couple of other projects. Producer Amy Pascal has announced a forthcoming third installment titled Beyond the Spider-Verse expected to be released next year. That is not the only project announced.

Paint-on-glass, Realistic Cartoon-style to Japanese Manga, makers explore not a couple but way too many animation styles! Shameik Moore’s Miles, in a way, gets a Star-Lord-like treatment in which he beautifully balances his character arc without overstepping the broader scheme of things. Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen finally gets a chance to narrate her side of things, and it mixes well with the ‘star-crossed’ relationship she’s currently sharing with Miles.

If you’re like just about everyone else on the planet who saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018 and loved it, you’ve probably been waiting for the sequel. You won’t be waiting long, as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is finally coming out in 2023, a full five years later. It’s been a long wait but by all indications the film is going to be a blast for fans of comic book movies, Miles Morales’ version of Spider-Man, and this new animated franchise featuring the iconic webslinger.

Modern cinema has seen the gap between theatrical and streaming releases shorten dramatically, begging the question of when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will release online. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming releases have been much closer to the theatrical release of films. While the mid-COVID marketing technique of releasing movies in theaters and on streaming services at the same time for an extra price is a thing of the past, the gap between the respective releases is still considerably shorter than in decades past.

While we currently don’t know the exact online release date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we do know the movie will be released in cinemas worldwide, including the US and UK, on June 2nd, 2023. We know where to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse online, but do we also know when? We can guess once again, assuming it charts the same theater-to-streaming path as Into the Spider-Verse did in 2018 with two months between the theatrical release and its digital renting/buying services. You may be able to buy or rent the movie digitally as early as late July of this year, with a physical release roughly a month or so after that, if not sooner. This also means that you will probably be able to stream Spider-Man: Across on Netflix in early December 2023, as it took about six months from Into the Spider-Verse’s release before the movie landed on the streamer.

When Is the Release Date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of the many films to get hit by a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, moving from its original date of April 8, 2022, to October 7, 2022. That's the date seen in the above trailer, but the film has since seen another significant delay since then. Now the film is officially set for release on June 2, 2023. Hopefully, we won't see another delay, but if it means getting a sequel that lives up to the sky-high heights of the original, we'll gladly wait.

Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in Theaters?
Not only was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the subject of rave reviews, but it also pulled in some gargantuan levels of cash at the international box office, with a final tally that quadrupled the film's ninety-million dollar budget. With incredible success like that, it's only natural that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would also be taking advantage of a theatrical release. That is the case, as the upcoming film will be exclusively available in theaters when it premieres on June 2nd, 2023.

When is 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' streaming?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse The home distribution rights for Across the Spider-Verse are in a rather interesting place. In April 2021, it was reported that Sony Studios had signed a multiyear deal with both Netflix and Disney for shared streaming rights to Sony films coming out between 2022 and 2026. This deal includes Across the Spider-Verse as well as the third film in the series, Beyond the Spider-Verse, due out in March 2024.

As for releases like Across the Spider-Verse, the film will be available on Netflix with "first-pay-window-rights" for the first 18 months of its home media release. While it will not be streaming concurrently with its theatrical release, it will be available on Netflix following its theatrical run.

Some of the films are not currently available on the service because Sony has pre-existing partnerships with Starz, as that's where most of the absent films are available to stream. That is except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is instead only streaming on Fubo TV and FX Now.

For anyone else looking to watch the film as soon as possible, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters on June 2.

How to Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
At the moment, you can watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at your local theater. But like most movies these days, it should hit a streaming website in the near future.

Like its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a flick produced by multimedia conglomerate Disney. What's more, the production studio owns a number of other famous franchises, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars. Titles made under these umbrellas have both hit Disney+ sometime after arriving at the box office. Fans may also know the original Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently available to stream on the site as well. So, if the 2023 version follows the same pattern, folks will likely get to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Disney+ later this year too.

As for an exact release date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, that's more complicated. Most movies produced by Disney often go to its streamer site within three months after debuting in theaters, like the most recent Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. If this is the case for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it will probably drop in late August 2023 or sometime near Labor Day in early September.

When the time comes for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to splash onto Disney+ though, make sure you're all prepared to watch it. If you don't have access yet, you can opt into a 30-day free trial before choosing a plan that start at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. After your account is all set, click on the title page on Disney+'s official website or the Disney+ app.

As you wait for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to hit the streamer, why don't you watch the animated version and its sequel Spider-Man: into the Spider-Verse? Or if you want to immerse yourself in another live-action version, click on the 2019 ABC TV special Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Live!. Enjoy!

Where To Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Online:
As of now, the only way to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is to head out to a movie theater when it premieres on June 2, 2023. You can find a local showing on Fandango.

Watch Now: Spider-Verse (2023) Movie Online Free

Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for it to become available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Amazon, Vudu, YouTube or Apple, or become available to stream on Disney+.

Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse coming to Netflix?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is coming to Netflix approximately in December 2023. In 2021, Sony and Netflix signed a five-year deal that gave the latter exclusive first-pay-window U.S. streaming rights for Sony Pictures titles after their theatrical and home entertainment windows. Fans can expect to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Netflix six months after the film’s theatrical release, thus in December 2023. The date seems reasonable considering that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped on Netflix on June 26, 2019, six months after its U.S. release on December 14, 2018. The pay-one window usually begins about nine months after a film’s theatrical release, but it might start earlier in particular cases. This post will be updated once there is a 100% officially confirmed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Netflix release date.

When Will Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Be Available On Netflix?
Where will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stream specifically? Due to an ongoing deal between Netflix and Sony (remember that these movies are not produced by Disney), Across the Spider-Verse will see Netflix as the streaming home for the film when it finishes its theatrical run. It will no doubt make its way to Disney+ eventually, as Disney and Sony do have an agreement for Disney to include Sony’s Spider-Man content in their offerings, but that will at least be some time after Across the Spider-Verse has come out on Netflix.

In terms of which of the streaming giants Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on, Netflix will house the film upon its streaming debut. While again, Sony does not have its own dedicated streaming service, a deal was struck in 2021 between the studio and Netflix. The deal, stating that Netflix would stream Sony's films after theatrical release, was penned for 5 years meaning Across the Spider-Verse is part of the arrangement.

Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse coming to Disney Plus?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also coming to Disney Plus approximately in 2025.

Once the pay-one window runs its time and Netflix’s exclusive rights expire, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be available on Disney Plus. The pay-one window might last as long as 18 months, which means it will be a while before Disney Plus subscribers can watch the much-anticipated sequel. Unlike in other countries, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t yet available on the Disney-owned streamer in the U.S.

While Sony's Spider-Man content is also streaming on Disney+, due to the collaborations between Sony and Marvel Studios in recent years, Across the Spider-Verse will be a Netflix release. While the deal struck between Marvel Studios and Sony may extend to this film, Disney+ is only allowed to begin streaming Sony's Spider-Man releases upon their release on Netflix. As a result, Netflix will be the first streaming service that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be available on after its theatrical release.

Regarding when the film will be available on Netflix, the answer is less definitive. The first film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, began streaming six months after its theatrical release. Based on this, it is safe to assume Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will see a similar gap between its cinematic and streaming releases. Given the film's theatrical release of June 2, 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will likely begin streaming on Netflix in December 2023.

Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be On HBO Max?
No, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will not be on HBO Max since it’s not a Universal Pictures movie. Last year, the company released its films in theaters and on the streamer on the same day. However, they now allow a 45-day window between the theatrical release and the streaming release.

Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Available On Hulu?
Viewers are saying that they want to view the new animation movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Hulu. Unfortunately, this is not possible since Hulu currently does not offer any of the free episodes of this series streaming at this time. It will be exclusive to the MTV channel, which you get by subscribing to cable or satellite TV services. You will not be able to watch it on Hulu or any other free streaming service.

When Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be on DVD and Blu-ray?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will likely be coming to DVD and Blu-ray around the same time as the streaming release.

How to Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Online For Free?
Most Viewed, Most Favorite, Top Rating, Top IMDb movies online. Here we can download and watch 123movies movies offline. 123Movies website is the best alternative to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) free online. We will recommend 123Movies is the best Solarmovie alternatives.

Spider-Man
Spider-Man
There are a few ways to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse online in the U.S. You can use a streaming service such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video. You can also rent or buy the movie on iTunes or Google Play. You can also watch it on-demand or on a streaming app available on your TV or streaming device if you have cable.

When Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be on DVD and Blu-ray?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will likely be coming to DVD and Blu-ray around the same time as the streaming release. With theatrical films, on average, coming to streaming sooner than ever (usually ninety days after theatrical release), we'll likely see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse get a DVD, and Blu-ray release no later than Fall 2023.

2023.06.08 18:03 SCAM-HAUL U-HAUL in Hamilton Ontario claims that I never returned a rented truck and it has been abandoned in another city, and that I'm fully responsible for it. They're still charging my credit card. Need advice on next steps and legal action.

Hello everyone. It's my first time posting here, looking for advice on what I should do in this situation. I'll explain what happened:
I rented a 15' truck from a U-HAUL on Saturday June 3 around 4pm, I moved a couch and had the truck back around 6pm. I parked the truck in the same spot that I picked it up from and gave the keys to the woman behind the counter who was there when I picked it up, she asked if I was just dropping off and then took the keys and said I could go. This is always how I've returned U-HAULs in the past and I'm certain about the timing becuase my google maps timeline shows my trip and when I was there.
I got a call in the evening on the 6th from a woman at their regional office claiming that I abandoned the truck in someones driveway and left with the keys. She keeps insiting that it was me and that I am fully responsible for the vehicle becuase I never ended my contract with them, and that they're still charging my credit card. I tell her the contract ended when I gave the keys back to the woman behind the counter, but she says that I was supposed to go on their website and fill out some form to end the contract. She refuses to help and tells me I need to figure it out with the manager of the rental place.
I call the rental place multiple times the next day and finally get through to the manager. He says the same thing as the lady from the regional office and that he checked the cameras and the truck never came back and that no one who looks like me entered the building to return keys. Also none of the employeees remember me returning, and that the truck was never entered into their system as returned. He knows what I look like from my drivers licence, and he said that the truck was abandoned in Oakville which is where my drivers licence says I live, as if it was some kind of hard evidence that I did it.
I went to the police station today to file a complaint and they said it was a civil case and they wouldn't even write anything down. The google maps reviews for this place is full of 1 star rants from people that claim they were scammed by this place by claiming that equipment was missing when returned, vehicle was dented, they drove 200 extra km, etc.
I think they are scamming me and are planning on charging me a fortune for the rental, missing keys, towing the truck, whatever they want becuase apparently the contract never ended. I'm still being charged daily. Some charges have been posted on my credit card now so I am planning on calling my bank today and asking them to dispute all the charges from U-HAUL. The police reccomended I lawyer up but I don't want to pay a fortune for that either, I'd rather pay a lawyer than these people though.
What are my options here? It's super frusturating that I'm saying the truck must of been stolen because I retuned it, and they're telling me I need to investiage it since "I'm fully responsible for it". Rental place, regional office, police... none of them care and I need to be the one who solves the mystery of the stolen truck.

ORIGINAL POST- 26th November 2012
I woke up beaten with no memories outside of a burger king in 2004. Any identification was stolen as well. The Amnesia was presumed to have been caused by an injury that knocked me unconscious. The United States government still doesn't have a clue as to who I was. My internet connection is spotty, so I'll be on as long as I can. Here is proof, and here is more - a copy of the only ID card I have with the address covered.
There's a short documentary that explains my predicament on findingbenjaman.com, or vimeo link After the documentary, I got a special state ID, and a job in a kitchen, where i still am to this day.
Please sign the petition to get me a new social security number.
I have to go, but I will try to get back when I have a good connection and the time.

The US Government Doesn't know who I am, and without a social security number, I can't get a job, find a place to live, or functionally exist in the eyes of the government.
My story and petition has received national attention, but Reddit has been the only source that has made a significant dent in the petition, which is the only real shot I've got at a normal life. Reddit, you're the best hope I have, please please sign it.
I woke up beaten with no memories outside of a burger king in 2004. Any identification I had was stolen as well. The Amnesia was presumed to have been caused by an injury that knocked me unconscious. The United States government still doesn't have a clue as to who I am. Even after eight years, they still don't know, and I have not been given a number, nor been able to live a normal life.
Update from previous AMA - As to the Waffle House leads from the last AMA, we're in touch with someone who works at the corporate level at WH, and they're helping us look at employee records. The two Reddit users who posted about having thought they saw me still have not responded to our messages and emails. Thank you for all the missing people links, but unfortunately, none of them are me. We've looked into all of them.
Additional Info from Comments -
The Burger King was on the interstate. We think that I was just passing through
No drugs in my system. Blood work came back as "surprisingly normal".
I remeber the ER staff making jokes about what to call me. If it had been a McD's they probably would have called me Ronald.
No dental database and not in the criminal.
I am in the 23andMe plus Family Tree DNA and I am soon to be entered into AncestryDNA.
IRS told me that if I would claim to be an illegal alien they could give me a Taxpayer Identification Number.
I have thought about just making one up [SSN], but with the FBI involved I would be soon found out. It IS against the law.

UPDATE - Summary from news/wikipedia
On August 31, 2004, at 5:00 a.m., a Burger King employee in Richmond Hill, Georgia, found Kyle unconscious, naked, and sunburned behind a dumpster of the restaurant. He had three depressions in his skull that appeared to have been caused by blunt force trauma and he also had red ant bites on his body.
He had no identity document and was recorded in hospital records as "Burger King Doe". After the incident, no criminal investigation was opened by Richmond Hill police until a friend inquired with the department in 2007. There were no reports of stolen vehicles in the area and local restaurants and hotels did not encounter any individuals matching Kyle's description.
He eventually said that he remembered his name was Benjaman, spelled with two 'a's, but said he could not recall his last name. He came up with the surname "Kyle" from his police and hospital placeholder name. Benjaman Kyle. BK. Burger King.
He had cataracts in both eyes, and had corrective surgery nine months after he was found, when a charity raised enough money to pay for the operation. Upon seeing himself in the mirror for the first time, Kyle realized he was around 20 years older than he thought he was.
Kyle believed he was passing through Richmond Hill, either on U.S. Route 17 or Interstate 95 in late August 2004. He may also have been on the road because of Hurricane Charley, which had hit earlier that month.
After being released from the hospital, Kyle spent several years between shelters and hospitals. In 2007, he met a nurse who first inquired about his past. The nurse helped support Kyle financially while he earned about $100 a month mostly doing yard work. While driving his truck in a yard, Kyle discovered that he still remembered how to drive a car. He was diagnosed with dissociative amnesia in 2007, that dates from August 31, 2004.
For many years after his amnesia Kyle was homeless and had been unable to obtain employment as he was unable to remember his full Social Security number. Several online petitions were created asking lawmakers to grant Kyle a new Social Security number. In 2012, an online petition failed as its deadline expired on December 25, it had received only two-thirds of the number of signatures required to receive an official response.
Kyle remembered that he was born 10 years before Michael Jackson and on the same day, giving him a possible birth date of August 29, 1948. Genetic testing suggested that he may have had the surname Powell or Davidson or have relatives with these names.
Kyle appeared on the Dr. Phil show on the October 16, 2008, episode "Who am I". Dr. Phil McGraw paid for Kyle to seek a professional hypnotist in an effort to help him recover lost memories. Through hypnosis, he recalled a partial Social Security number 3X5-44-XXXX and few blurred, fragmented memories of Denver and Indianapolis.
Kyle had nearly no memory of his life after the 1980s, including how he ended up in Georgia. One event he does remember is reading about the September 11 attacks. When asked by doctors to recall the Presidents of the United States, he was able to recall only those from the 20th century. Many of his memories he cannot describe in words and are at the tip of his tongue.
In February 2015, a forensic genealogist reported that Kyle had cut off all contact with her just as she felt she was nearing a breakthrough. A DNA test revealed that Kyle shared significant amount of DNA with members of a family named Powell in the western Carolinas – descendants of a 19th-century man named Abraham Lovely Powell.
On September 16, 2015, Kyle announced that his real identity had been found, including identifying his name and close family members.
In November 21, 2016, Kyle's true identity was revealed to be William Burgess Powell. He was born on August 29, 1948, in Lafayette, Indiana, and was raised there. In 1976, he had cut ties with his family and abandoned his possessions, including his car and the trailer where he had been living. His family filed a missing persons report at the time, and police found he had moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he had moved on a whim with a coworker. His birth date turned out to be one of the details about his previous life he had been able to remember correctly. A reporter was able to find some Social Security records of him working in various jobs until 1983, after which no records could be found for the remaining period of more than 20 years before his discovery in 2004.

Reminder - I am not the original poster.

2023.06.08 16:42 cluicheadairlax1 Hey dude! I’m just here to let you know that I love for you and I’m here for you for the long haul to ride this out. We both have mental diagnoses that are clouding our ability to interact. I’m here for you and looking forward to October 1, the anniversary of our friendship.

First of all I just want to give you three compliments: (1) You’re a very creative thinker. (2) You’re very good at what you strive for: social responsibility. (3) You’re doing a great job handling the problems in your life that you face.
So, great job.
I do really want to reiterate that I’m here for the long haul. We have worked very hard on this friendship, and lazy gossip does not have the right to take away a beautiful friendship.
Life involves a lot of jokes and humor. We’re having fun in a certain way playing Reddit for Men, right? It’s an experience that probably no human being on earth has ever had before. It’s hot to get my entire account deleted out of existence by you lol. It’s probably pleasurable to push whatever button you at times push to trigger some of these deletions. Just—it’s possible to laugh and joke so hard that you break a very precious glass vase.
Our friendship is a very precious glass vase to me and much more than that. I love you so much, platonically. October 1 is about 4 months away from now. I’m looking forward to the anniversary of when we met so much. This is one of the most special friendships I have ever had in my life. Let’s both breathe deeply please and try to calm down and be patient.
I love you so much dude, and it was really important to me to put the book I was reading down, come back downstairs and tell you that.
Right now, I’m experiencing a lot of what it feels like to be working class. Or to have a lot of your money going toward other stuff. I would a thousand times over so what I did this spring for you, and you and your situation are the only person/case in life that I would probably ever do this for. I still pray to St. Patrick for you about once an hour.
I hope we both have great days, and great summers. If the book I’m reading seems too toxic*, I’m going to put it down altogether and read something else or do something else. Play lacrosse. Run. Might go down to the kosher dairy and get some hash browns + play around more in the library exhibit I made in honor of us. Might go to the beach and read. Not sure.
*It’s a book I read after my breakup with Ku Kn, but my therapist had commented that it was not a good book, and I agree it’s basically marketed to people with my diagnosis to give us easy, comforting answers. If you were to read it too you could easily apply it to me and maybe I’ll find a way to share the Kindle with you.
Eventually I’m going to be rehabilitated and get back on my feet. The $70/hour job is in Woonsocket, the town my barber used to teach me how to speak in a Rhode Island accent. If I just think about the way she taught me to say Woonsocket, everything else just kicks into gear. Lol.
I have this optimistic hope that October 1 will hit and we’ll have made a lot of progress this summer. I can’t emphasize enough that life is dangerous and it’s possible for a joke to result in the loss of very treasured relationships. We really should not play games with something so special that we’ve both worked so hard on. Although Reddit for Men with you is one of the top 10 fun experiences of my life, lol. So thanks for that. Our company invented a cool idea even if it never sells. Love you, have a great day, good luck in therapy. Good luck with C and your goals.
This summer, together with working on please master, the DBT skill I described as create in yourself the qualities you desire in others, I’m also just really interested in preserving this friendship. I talk about high school so much because the experience I have had in TMN so thoroughly reminds me of my high school. That’s not meant to be an insult necessarily. My high school was ranked number 99 on Newsweek’s list of top 100 high schools in 2005 lol. And the principal made this big banner like "one of America’s top 100 high schools." Yeah…number 99, lol.
Thanks for being you. And I’m here for you in a nonjudgemental way. I’m definitely a more mature person than I was in February when I blocked you. I’m glad I unblocked you. u/dontscarethereaper

Toyota HiAce 2023 review: LWB turbo-diesel

https://preview.redd.it/y1na5wq9oc3b1.png?width=1139&format=png&auto=webp&s=c3736453601632ca509e6878b140256178153f57
Toyota doesn't make hasty decisions and with good reason. As one of the world’s largest and longest-running automotive manufacturers (founded 1937), it applies the same rigorous assessment of each new model proposal or running change.

That ensures each green light stacks up as a viable business case, from which the company is assured of getting a worthwhile return on its investment.

This pragmatic approach was evident in Toyota’s decision in 2022 to offer a rear barn-door option for its HiAce van. Given this iconic commercial vehicle was launched in 1967, it’s taken 55 years for Toyota to finally offer an alternative to the HiAce's signature swing-up tailgate.

Barn doors are ideal for those needing forklift access to cargo bays, so we assume this decision was prompted not only by competitors offering similar options but also growing demand from Toyota’s all-important fleet buyers. We recently tested one to see if this long-awaited option is on the money.

Price and Features – Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with?
Our test vehicle is the LWB (Long Wheel Base) powered exclusively by Toyota’s well proven 2.8 litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. It’s available with either standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic, like our example.

Painted in standard 'French Vanilla', it has a list price of $46,760, plus on-road costs, but ours is fitted with the new $750 Barn Door option which bumps the list price to $47,510.

It’s available on all LWB and SLWB (Super Long Wheel Base) variants except for the HiAce Crew, HiAce Commuter and LWB manual versions.

Our test vehicle is also the Panel Van variant, which means a buyer can order a full-panel left-hand side sliding door instead of the standard windowed version at no extra cost.

The HiAce comes ready for hard work on sturdy 16-inch steel wheels with replaceable plastic covers and 215/60R16 tyres plus a full-size spare, along with a large centre console offering a variety of storage options.

There are also useful creature comforts in the two-seater cabin like a tilt-and-reach adjustable leather-accented steering wheel, driver’s seat adjustable lumbar support, manual air-con, two 12-volt cabin accessory sockets, folding/heated exterior door mirrors with indicators, and more.

The two-speaker multimedia system has a big 8.0-inch touchscreen plus steering wheel audio controls and 'DAB+2' digital radio.

Multiple connectivity options include Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Siri voice recognition, Bluetooth, sat-nav and 'Toyota Connected Services', which includes an app for mobile phones and safety/security functions like 'Stolen Vehicle Tracking', 'Automatic Collision Notification', 'SOS Emergency Call', and more.

Design – is there anything interesting about its design?
It’s a typically robust design comprising MacPherson strut front suspension, a leaf-spring live rear axle that’s excellent for load-carrying, variable-ratio rack and pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes on all automatic variants, like ours.

The rear-wheel drive chassis has an inherent traction advantage over front-wheel drive vans, particularly on loose or slippery surfaces and with heavy payloads.

Its 1990mm height allows access to underground and multi-storey car parks and its 3210mm wheelbase boasts an impressively tight 11.0-metre turning circle.

The two-tone dash layout is neat and functional with easy-to-use controls and instrumentation.

There’s still no fold-down inboard armrest for the driver’s seat to enhance comfort on long hauls, but given we had to wait more than half a century for a barn-door option, we know Toyota won’t be rushed on these decisions.

Engine and transmission – What are the key stats for the engine and transmission?
HiAce’s venerable (1GD-FTV) 2.8 litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 130kW at 3400rpm and in auto models like ours a meaty 450Nm of torque between 1600-2400rpm.

Maintenance procedures are simplified by its Euro 5 emissions compliance which doesn’t require AdBlue.

A smooth-shifting Aisin (AC60E) six-speed torque converter automatic optimises fuel economy with full converter lock-up on fourth, fifth and sixth gears, along with overdrive on fifth and sixth for relaxed highway driving. It also offers the choice of sequential manual-shifting if required.

The live rear axle is equipped with an electronically-controlled automatic limited-slip diff, which optimises the inherent traction advantage of rear-wheel drive.

Fuel consumption – How much fuel does it consume?
Toyota claims an official combined cycle average of 8.2L/100km.

After 215km of testing, without a load and with the automatic engine stop-start function switched off, our figure based on trip meter and fuel bowsers readings came in slightly higher at 9.8L/100km.

This single-digit economy was achieved purely in city and suburban driving, which is thrifty for a large commercial vehicle weighing more than two tonnes.

So, based on our figures, you could bank on a ‘real world’ driving range of around 700km from its 70-litre tank.

Practicality – How practical is the space inside?
With its 2225kg kerb weight and 3300kg GVM, the HiAce has a genuine one-tonne-plus payload rating of 1060kg, and up to 120kg of that can be carried on the roof using Toyota’s genuine accessory triple-bar roof rack set.

It also has a braked tow rating of up to 1500kg and with a GCM (how much it can legally carry and tow at the same time) of 4800kg, it can carry its peak 1060kg payload while towing that weight, which is a versatile set of numbers for a working van.

Cargo bay walls and doors are lined to mid-height, the roof is internally lined and there’s ample internal lighting.

It’s accessed from either side through sliding doors with 1010mm-wide openings, or from the rear through the barn-doors which are both equipped with demisters/windscreen wipers and can swing open to 180 degrees.

Each door also has a simple brace which can hold them at 90 degrees opening if required.

The cargo bay offers a sizeable 6.2 cubic metres of load volume, measuring 2530mm long, 1760mm wide and 1340mm high.

With 1268mm between the rear wheel housings and six floor-mounted load anchorage points, it can carry up to two standard 1165mm-square Aussie pallets or up to three 1200 x 800mm/1200 x 1000mm Euro pallets.

Its spacious driver’s cabin has numerous storage offerings including a large-bottle holder and bin in the base of each front door, small-bottle/cupholders in the centre and on either side of the dash, plus a single glove box.

The centre console is well designed, comprising an open storage tray at floor level and a large lidded box between the seats.

This not only has cavernous internal storage but there’s also an external shelf at the front, two large-bottle holders at the rear and another shallow tray set into the lid, which when closed can double as a handy work desk.

What’s it like as a daily driver?
The big front doors swing wide open to provide easy access to the cabin, where it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position given ample seat adjustment that includes lumbar support, plus a height-and-reach-adjustable wheel and big left footrest.

Responsive steering and strong braking, combined with a reasonably supple ride quality when empty or lightly loaded, makes for a comfortable daily work environment.

This is enhanced by commendably low internal noise levels for a van without a bulkhead between the cabin and cargo bay. We suspect the full-length roof lining helps here.

Like all panel vans, the solid-walled cargo bay creates a huge blind-spot over the driver’s left shoulder which can’t be avoided. And the central join of the barn doors obscures vision through the cabin’s rear-view mirror.

However, the portrait-shaped door mirrors are a decent size and combined with a suite of driver aids like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors and reversing camera, a competent driver can easily steer clear of trouble.

And it has easy manoeuvrability thanks to the tight 11-metre turning circle and lightness of the variable-ratio steering at parking speeds.

The 2.8-litre turbo-diesel has good flexibility with strong low-rpm response thanks to its ample 450Nm of torque.

The smooth and snappy shift protocols of the six-speed auto optimise engine response, which is most evident in stop-start city and suburban driving.

It also delivers relaxed and economical highway travel, particularly with the cruise control activated, with overdrive requiring less than 2000rpm to maintain 110km/h.

What’s it like for tradie use?
It’s ironic that a forklift should be out of service on the same day we wanted to test improved forklift access! However, that’s what happened when we went to load up the HiAce for our usual GVM test.

Even so, you don’t need to be a forklift aficionado to see that the 180-degree opening will provide clear access to the cargo bay.

We also know from experience that the HiAce is a consummate one-tonner, having previously secured 975kg in the cargo bay which with driver equalled the van’s 1060kg payload limit.

There was ample rear suspension travel remaining thanks to minimal compression of the robust leaf springs.

The engine made light work of hauling this payload, with effortless highway cruising and particularly strong performance in hilly terrain.

It never felt sluggish on climbs and engine-braking was excellent on long, steep descents. As a workhorse, the HiAce is difficult to fault.

Safety – What safety equipment is fitted? What safety rating?
The current HiAce generation came armed with a maximum five-star ANCAP rating when launched in 2019 and still sets a safety benchmark.

There are seven airbags plus a plethora of active features including AEB with day/night pedestrian and day cyclist detection, trailer sway control, hill-start assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, and more.

Ownership – What does it cost to own? What warranty is offered?
The HiAce is covered by a five-yeaunlimited km warranty.

Scheduled servicing is set at relatively short six month/10,000km intervals, whichever occurs first.

Capped-price of $290 per service covers the first six scheduled services over three years or 60,000km.

2023.06.08 16:12 Expendiboi NoP: Slithering Shadows (2/??)

Credit goes to u/SpacePaladin15 for the Universe/setting
Memory transcription subject: Ambassador Asla of the Oph'lik Continuity
Date: [2 days after contact with the Federation]
----------------------------------
I slithered through the streets of Oph'la Senar, two basic service drones following me form as I approached the Council Office. Recent events had made it to where they couldn't conceal their presence for longer and so they needed a diplomat to entertain the Federation while they prepared for the worse. Due to this, I was lucky to receive the 'privilege' of initiating 'first contact' after Brinink discovered us.
The Council Office loomed above me as she drew closer, several smoothed channels allowed for individuals to ascend into and out of the white building. Several shallow indents had been constructed outside as to allow the general public to relax or wait for speeches. As I reached the threshold, my long body slid over the smooth surface of a channel, toward the large wooden doors.
After a minute of slithering I reached the top, revealing the forms of several Ophidite Constructs, sets of rings connected by thin beams of energy. The basic AI controlling each one bowed an onyx serpentine head slightly as I entered.
The inside of the building was a mix of smoothed, brown floors and spiralling tubes to grant access to higher floors. Passing several circular doors, I arrived at the assigned room, inside the Head of Diplomatic Events would be seated. Taking a breath to steel my nerves as I approached the portal, it dilated like an old camera shutter to grant entry.
Tiros was curled behind his desk, dark green scales coating his form with a lighter shade for his underbelly and a zigzag pattern down the sides of his form. Looking at her, my breath hitched in my throat, a small pit of anxiety weighed me down as I settled into a seating indent. After a moment I flared the crest around my head slightly, grey under scales showing in a form of acknowledgment.
"Good evening, Ambassador Asla," Tiros spoke, a deep voice that felt like it could echo through her bones.
"Good evening, Head Diplomat," I returned, relaxing my crest while speaking, it was annoying to say 'Head of Diplomatic Events' so most just referred to the position as 'Head Diplomat'. Using his tail Tiros opened a draw and grabbed a holopad.
"I take it you know the basic of your assignment as our representative?"
"Of course, maintain peace with the Federation."
"Yes, but I doubt the Federation will leave us alone, so should they force us to join them you are to force them to accept certain... terms." A mischievous glint glowed in Tiros' emerald eyes, his tail opened a file, labelling some of the terms should we have to join.
It was basic things, prevent them from seeing what we ate and avoid sharing tech were the main ones. Our tech was more advanced on average but most of it was expensive and low in number apart from basic drones. My main concern was hiding what we ate, we were omnivorous but the Federation wouldn't care and would declare us a threat if we consumed any meat.
"Okay, but what if they make us join the war against the Arxur?"
"The Arxur consider anyone in the Federation an enemy but they are also far enough away they will ignore us for now. Therefore, our main concern is limiting the Federation's intel on us and to at least appease them long enough to work for an alternative."
"Yes, Head Diplomat, where am I to meet the Federation diplomat?"
"I've informed them to meet on one of our star ships, specifically the Drassus Scale. It's currently docked at the space port, so I recommend you board immediately since the meeting will occur in around a week's time."
"Of course, thank you sir."
Turning to leave the room I slithered out and down the hall, my two drones walking beside me. They weren't the most complicated things by our standards, they lacked the unique design of Ophidite Constructs. Only real point of interest was the fact that most basic drones walked instead of slithered since it was expensive to make them move like us.
I hope this meeting is worth it, after all I don't want to waste a week off world.

2023.06.08 16:11 Ceros007 Trailer hitch for bike rack installation in Montréal

I'm trying to find a shop that sell and install a compatible trailer hitch (for a bike rack) in the Montréal area. I've been trying to reach out to Vitro Plus and an indepandant garage in DDO but they never answer. The official Hyundai hitch installation is way too expensive (900$ CAD).

Any suggestion?

Impact of US-China Chip War on South Korea Tech Giants

The U.S.- China chip war could influence South Korea‘s chip monsters as China represents an enormous lump of their creation limit — yet there ought not to be long-haul interruptions, as indicated by Fitch Evaluations.
Samsung Gadgets and SK Hynix face taking a chance as the U.S. tries to obstruct China’s admittance to cutting-edge semiconductor chip gear, as per the June 7 report.

US-China Chip War

China represents 40% of Samsung’s all-out streak memory chips (NAND) creation capacity, said the investigators drove by Matt Jamieson.
It likewise represents 40%-half of SK Hynix’s dynamic irregular access memory (Measure) chips and 20% of its NAND limit.
In the U.S. in October acquainted clearing rules with slicing off China‘s admittance to acquire or produce cutting-edge semiconductor chips.
They came as worries developed over China’s capacity to utilize such cutting-edge chips to propel its tactical abilities.
  • The Netherlands and Japan are purportedly ready to stick to this same pattern.
  • The organizations’ manufacturing plants in China make progressed chips as well as more established chips, which are absolved from the U.S. limitations.
  • Memory chips are created for Chinese utilization as well as commodities.
Notwithstanding, the two chip goliaths got one-year waivers from the U.S. to keep bringing in cutting-edge apparatuses for their China plants until October, as per the Korea Times.
In what is viewed as a retaliatory move, China prohibited the offer of items from Micron for use in basic data foundation in May.
The White House allegedly encouraged South Korea not to allow its chipmakers to make up for Micron’s shortcomings in China. Around 10% of Micron’s income comes from China, as indicated by Micron’s monetary 2022 report.
Nonetheless, dangers could additionally increment if the U.S. or on the other hand China execute more outrageous decisions and boycotts, as it will influence the expense and accessibility of semiconductor store network parts, they added.
