Brown stuff (old blood?) in dog's eye -- should I be concerned?
2023.06.08 19:28 navelbabel Brown stuff (old blood?) in dog's eye -- should I be concerned?
Species: Dog
Age: 3 years
Sex/Neuter status: Spayed
Breed: Mixed (pitbull, schnauzer, and more)
Body weight: 30lbs
History: no significant medical issues
Clinical signs: Brownish, liquidy-looking discoloration beneath right eye/on inner eyelid -- no rapid change/active discharge
Duration: 1 day -- noticed after return from grooming appointment, but can't be certain it wasn't there for some time prior.
Your general location: California
Link to photos of the eye:

I haven't noticed any indication that it's bothering her, and doesn't appear to be growing or changing over the last ~24 hours. I sent the photos to our vet but they seemed ambivalent about whether to bring her in and said to at least monitor it to make sure it doesn't worsen. I plan to ask the groomer if her eye got bumped or something but they are not open today.

2023.06.08 18:43 69420smokeafatdoob Advice please đŤśđť
| Hi there guys, just looking for a little bit of advice. This message was also sent to a vet clinic however we wondered if you guys would have any experience with this kind of problem. Much love and any advice, help, similar situations that have happened would be appreciated as all four pigs are very special and carpet will not be able to stay if this problem continues. Images of carpet About a week ago, we bought a fourth pig, Carpet (1y), to bond to our original 3 as one of them is very shy, Travis (8months), and we wanted him to feel more confident. Carpet met Micheal (8months) and Travis and they have had zero problems. However when he met the baby of the group, Barry (6months), Barry immediately started fighting him, humping and overall generally being aggressive. Over time and regular meetings, he did calm down and they seemed to get along, eating together etc. Carpet has been living in the cage for maybe 4 days now and today we found Barry had multiple bite wounds, scratches and just general blood drawn fighting wounds all over one side of his body. Naturally they have been separated keeping the original 3 together and Carpet apart. We used a weak solution of salt water on Barryâs wounds as an attempt to prevent infections. They have a 8x2 c and c cage with multiple feeding areas, water stations etc and lots of toys and hides. It is also two storey so there is lots of areas for them to escape from each other. There also is a temporary cage which is Carpets current home and was his home during bonding. The initial plan is to reattempt bonding again, however we wanted to know if there were any things we can do to make this easier on them both. Carpet was bought after being separated previously from his bonded mate and has been seen to be having a low appetite and rarely moving around, playing. We put this down to depression over being moved and the big change and have been encouraging outside of the cage feeds, giving him new environments and overall just trying to make sure he feels better. We wondered how long can we continue attempting bonding before it becomes pointless/ impossible. submitted by 69420smokeafatdoob to guineapiglovers [link] [comments] |
2023.06.08 18:38 silk_cheetah Rescued lab/pitbull mutt with crusty yellow lesions ~3 weeks
Wondering what these lesions might be or if i'm using right at home treatments...I would like an idea before I go back to the vet. Info below:
* Species: dog * Age: 1-2year * Sex/Neuter status: not neutered * Breed: Lab/pitbull mutt * Body weight: 60lbs * History: * Rescued dog from street about 1 month ago, noticed he had yellow crusty lesions on his stomach that have persisted whereas his back has a lot of dry skin/dandruff. He was vaccinated about 10 days ago and the vet said the skin lesions are likely secondary to another disease process. The vet tested him for heart worm and a panel of parasites. As expected for a street dog, he was positive for a parasite, hookworm, and received 13cc albendazole qd x 3 days. We thought treating the parasite might help his skin, as well as a regular dog diet but they persist after finishing parasite treatment a week ago. Overall heâs a sweet dog and has good energy and poops/pees regular now. * At home treatments: Iâve applied topical cortisone a few times a week and that seems to help a little but it doesnât cure. I also purchased Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiseptic and Antifungal Medicated Shampoo a few days ago that weâve used once, but I think itâs too soon for results since the bottle says 2x week. I also applied the standard anti-tick/anti-flea medication a few weeks ago. * Clinical signs: Mild licking and itching * Duration: ~4 weeks * Your general location: puerto rico

2023.06.08 18:23 texanhick20 Something is wrong with my Frenchie and we don't know what it is.
For the past week or so my little Frenchie (8F) as been limping on her hind legs and moving them stiffly. She's unable to stand on her hind legs like she use to and her energy levels have been a lot lower than normal. She use to go /nuts/ when a treat was presented to her. Now she wiggles her tail but otherwise is just chill about it. Further, and this has only happened a handful of times, but she'll be laying down, dozing, and then suddenly let out a high pitched little yell of a yelp.
We rescued her from a breeder and she's never yelped from pain in the past, when taking her to the vet where they drew blood several times or she's been poked and prodded and it had to hurt she didn't really react just being a chill good girl. So what ever is causing her to let out a little scream is enough to get past her pain tolerances as well.
We took her to the vet and they don't know what's going on. We have another appointment Sunday when the more experienced vet will be in the clinic to have her looked at. Any help, or suggestions on what to look for would be much greatly appreciated.

2023.06.08 17:54 Bajininja Introduction and question about possible incorrect raw diet implementation causing health issues.
Hi everyone, after months of research I've decided to start our dogs on raw food diet. However, my girlfriend who works at a vet clinic asked the vet we see there her opinion on raw diet and she said definitely not, it's not good. I am aware many if not most vets are not pro-raw diet, so I was not surprised by the answer. She did say when it comes to nutrition she sort of backs out because it's such a complicated topic, so she could refer us to a pet nutritionist. So we have me who has already planned out the logistics and ready to start doing raw, and girlfriend who is wary because of the vet opinion.
I've watched probably all of Peter Caine's dog training videos on youtube on raw diet and how to do it correctly, and was planning on just sort of doing what he does, with Walmart chicken leg quarters being the staple with a little added calcium powder without d3 on any meat given with no bone, or even meat with not enough bone. I was planning on following roughly 45% raw meaty bone, 45% muscle meat, 5% liver, 5% other organs. According to him the biggest mistake in the raw diet is not giving enough calcium or bone in the diet. The chicken quarters are ideal because they have almost the perfect ratio of bone to meat. Wanted to get opinions on this. Just lookup Peter Caine dog training on youtube and go to his raw diet and nutrition playlist. After researching different premade raw diet companies and such, it's a pleasant surprise that you can do proper raw diet for cheaper than kibble. Premade raw diet bought from companies is expensive as hell, just do it myself for cheap with just a little more legwork which isn't hard.
Also, this video appeared on my feed, linked below. He decided to stop feeding his dogs the raw diet due to both of his dogs being diagnosed with kidney issues. The first one died of kidney disease, the 2nd dog recently being diagnosed with small kidney issues. Then a comment under the video from a vet med of 12 years saying she saw many dogs come in with kidney issues that were on the raw diet. After some reading I discovered that potentially a dog not getting enough calcium could lead to kidney issues. Wanted to get opinions on this as well. Was this possibly caused by incorrect raw diet implementation? Perhaps maybe genetic, or both reasons? What are your thoughts?

2023.06.08 17:21 Prestigious_Name_PT Looking for Other Chronic Pain Therapists
Hello everyone,
I work Texas at a pediatric hospital as a chronic pain therapist. I took the Therapeutic Pain Specialist (TPS) certification course through Evidence In Motion 1.5 years ago and it has really been a boon for my treatment with chronic pain patients.
Prior to the course transitioning to Evidence In Motion (2-3 years ago if Iâm not mistaken), there was a way to look up the contact information of other therapist who completed the course. Now that database is nowhere to be found.
Iâm having trouble helping patients who come from 1+ hour away to see me at Pain Clinic because I have no way to find a therapist qualified to treat them. Unfortunately, therapists at standard pediatric or orthopedic clinics have had about a 5% chance of making progress with the patients and a 50%+ chance of actually making them worse.
Does anyone know of a way to find therapists outside of my local area who treats chronic pain (ideally TPS certified) besides calling and vetting the therapists at clinics around the patient?

Hi guys i have a question. My indoor cat got out and got into a fight with a stray. We took him to the vet and he's recovering really well. My other cat has started hissing at him after the fight. He has some dry blood on his neck, is that maybe why she is hissing at him? If not what else could be the reason? Its like she hates him now :(

2023.06.08 17:13 LexSmacks Chubbs
Chubbs
I am not a person of many words but after the loss of our 5yo cat Chubbs I had to say something.
He was a perfect friend, brother, cat-son. He was never annoying or boring. He was full of love and compassion. He would wake us up in the morning and go to sleep with us in the evening. He knew when we would be home from work and would wait for us on the window happy to see us return safely home.
But nothing lasts forever and just a couple of days ago he got saddle thrombus in the middle of the night. He was big, strong and healthy and neither us nor our vet ever expected something like that might happen. It didnt matter that we were in the clinic 30 mins after he collapsed, there was nothing that they could do. They tried everything for the next couple of days but he just got worse and worse. In the end only thing we could do was give him peace that he deserved. He was put down in our hands and it was the hardest decision we ever had to make.
In the end ill just say this:
Be patient with your kittens/cats, love them and cherish them. Dont get angry if they break something or if they eat something they shouldnt have. Give them loads of hugs and treats.
You never know when it might be the last time.

2023.06.08 17:00 SnowDrifter_ Skin tag looking thing?
My pet has a small skin tag looking thing on her chin.
I first noticed it last year. Thought it was a bee stinger at first and pulled it out. However, it wasn't. It was part of her and had blood flow.
I noticed it beginning to return, trying to sort what it is / what to do about it before committing to $$$ on vet visit. It causes her no discomfort and is not sensitive to touch.

2023.06.08 15:47 Traditional_Block618 I need guidance fellow techs, VA's and/vets
I'm really struggling right now with a career decision. I will try to make it short and sweet with out too much trauma. Several months ago while at work I was a fist hand witness to blatant animal abuse to a patient by a vet. I did let management know right away, they let corporate know and it was "handled". I continued to work and was still professional as was he. Fast forward a few more months and I find myself driving to work one morning, have a complete mental crisis, can't get in with my psychiatrist as an emergency, go to my PCP, they refer me to a mental health facility, I check myself in as out patient. I quickly learn through group therapy that I have been having severe PTSD at work every time I see said vet with a patient. I didnt realize I was until talking it out over the course of a week with a therapist and psychiatrist. I have been in out patient group therapy for nearly 2 months, just started back to work and it's going well because my whole team is very supportive, they do value mental wellness, and have been very willing to let me switch my roles up to accommodate me during recovery. My issue is, the said vet has been on vacation since I started back and I'm very afraid of the return PTSD once this vet comes back. I do love my clinic and the rest of staff. I have implemented many new improvements since starting. One of those was stopping un necessary rough handling of patients. We aren't 100 percent fear free but 85 percent better than when I started. Baby steps. I think this vet is an amazing man, he has worked very hard to have an amazing clinic, he is very passionate about helping animals but hes nearly 60, doesnt want to turn anyone away because he truely wants to help as many animals as possible, but then it leaves little room for actually taking time with eat patient and client. Then he gets frustrated and I think ends up taking it out on patients. It had again, has improved so much since I started. But this is really just the tip of the iceberg of things that don't sit well with me with him and our clinic protocols/policies. I want to stay, but I feel like I deserve better too, but then I want to be as open as possible if I look for a new job to make sure I find a good place but then I'm afraid it will detour them from wanting to hire me. Sorry its so long. I just need advice đŞ

2023.06.08 15:42 butterfly2712 How to not have panic attacks when your fears are about to come true
Usually when I'm scared to loose family members or any pets (family members too), I can just say that there are no signs that immediate death is near and I just need to enjoy the time I have with them. And also accept that I can't stop time. But there comes a time when this reality check is not working because there are signs of illness. In my particular case one of my cats got very sick and when I knew we would have to go to the vet clinic I had a panic attack. Unfortunately we had to let the cat go. So right now I can't tell myself that imagining the worst case was unjustified. How could I've helped myself instead? Or do I need just patience to accept that I'm helpless in these cases and trust myself that I can handle any outcome?

2023.06.08 15:12 atos288 Kitten 4 months and 2 weeks old - Please Help, Very Worried!
Hi Everyone,
I hope you are all doing well :)! Me and my wife purchased our 2nd Kitten 1 month ago and ever since he came he has been having a leaking anus. We took him to the vet and they said it is because he is on a Raw Food Diet (beef) which is what the breeder has been having him and his parents for a long time already (she has been a breeder for 15+ years). Our first Kitten was also from her and she is perfectly healthy but this one has a leaking anus.
We switched him to Kitten canned food over a course of 10 days (mixing 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). He then developed diarrhea and his poop was even smellier. We kept on it for another week and he still had it, we talked to the vet and they said for some cats/kitten it can take up to 6 weeks to settle when switching which I think is ridiculous. So we switched him back to Raw Food Beef with supplement for Kittens and the diarrhea went away within 24hrs. However, the poop is covered in this Mucus and is still a more softer consistency and smells fishy (pictures attached), his anus leaks around 1-5 minutes after he poops and it smells fishy as well. They then think his anal glands are infected and now he is on anti biotics but for some reason I do not think this is the issue. I believe the root cause is his softer stool and he might have an infection there, but the Vet is stubborn and only wants to do a thorough biopsy on the poop if it is fully liquid diarrhea.
I would sincerely and greatly appreciate any help on what to do to fix this issue. I am worried for my little boy and am overthinking the worst situations for him. I am judging from my experience with my previous Kitten and they never had this issue and their poop was more solid from the beginning. They are on the same diet and same breeder, everything is the same.
He is on a dewormer and fully vaccinated already. Dewormer covers tapeworms as well. Anal glands have been expressed and since then the situation has gotten worse (more smelly).
* Species: Cat * Age: 4.5 months * Sex/Neuter status: Male/Desexed * Breed: Ragdoll * Body weight: 3.4Kg * History: All clear* Clinical signs: Anal Gland? * Duration: 4 Weeks * Your general location: Australia QLD * Links to any test results, X-rays, vet reports etc. that you have: Anal Gland Expressed, since then situation has gotten worse.

2023.06.08 15:06 Shadowgirl7 Brother also a narcissist or just a phase in life?
My youngest dog died abruptly. I was not home that day, my brother and father were. My mother left after lunch and said she was fine but when she came back she saw she had been vomiting, so something happened in the period of the 6h she was not home. My brother and father were, they probably saw something and didn't bother calling me...I mean they didn't even have to call, just take her to the vet immediately, and then let me know so I'd get a ticket back home and transfer the money to the clinic, do they really think I would refuse to pay vet bills of my own dog?
I have another dog, he is 11 and I want to take him for a checkup. He is a reactive dog, he is agressive with other dogs, he doesn't like cars a lot and I think it's going to be hard in the vet to hold him long enough for a more prolonged exam, but I spoke with a vet center where they said they have muzzles and a team of people to help hold him, so I will take him.
I don't drive, this is a limitation I have due to a phobia but I basically only need it when I need to take my dogs to the vet. I can get by without driving in everything else. Even if I did drive, I think it would be wise to always have two people when I am transporting a dog that doesn't like cars very much, to avoid any accident. I could call a pet taxi but I am afraid how he would react to a strange person.
My mother's car is too small to take my dog so I asked my father. He can't on weekdays so I scheduled for a saturday, but apparently they don't do ultrassounds on saturdays, only week days. Today is a national holiday so tomorrow some people are off. My father is off but his car is going to the mechanic and he is not sure at what time. I asked my brother if he could, he said, he wasn't working but he wouldn't be home. I asked in the morning if he could, he said "i will be home but I want to rest".
Then he also said I should be careful with the other vet that I usually take my dogs because he was following my dog that died and once told me to give her paracetamol and if she did not improve, take her there next day. He said a vet who prescribes paracetamol to dogs is not good and he had some friends who had friends who took a dog there and he died after a couple of days, stuff like that (he only told me this now, she is dead for almost 3 weeks). Well, that day when he told me to give her paracetamol, I immediately googled articles about paracetamol for dogs and apparently some vets do prescribe in small doses, obviously you cannot give it without a vet telling you to. The idea was since she was unwell and the vet was closed, he couldn't do much so he told me to give a medicine that everyone has home so I could manage the pain and sometimes that's enough but if it wasn't I would go next day for an examination. She didn't die due to that issue, that issue seemed to have been fixed a couple of days later after I did take her there.
So the person who was home the entire day while my dog was dying and did not even bother to phone me (and then after she died, not even a call to check on me) and that refused to take my other dog to the vet because he wants to rest (I have three exams, I work full time and I am switching roles which has been stressful and I am dealing with the loss of my other dog, so yeah sure, I don't need to rest) says that I should have known the vet was not good... As if implying it was my fault she died because I took her to a bad vet.
I had my reasons to choose that vet. There was another one closer but they neutered my dog when she was only 6 months and apparently that's not advised and they didn't tell me. That vet performed more exams without the need to take her elsewhere and he had treated my oldest after she had a stroke. She survived 1 year and a half after that, she was 15 years and a half. So I thought that vet was competent and trustworthy.
Then I told him, I spent more than 500⏠to get the ashes of my dog back home, I'd clearly spend that or more to have her alive if I knew of any vet that was better and could help me prevent what happened to my dog! To which he only replied "well that's what I was told about that vet, maybe they were lying"
Okay, so basically you claim that I killed my dog, which I've been grieving for weeks (the first week I could barely eat and I had to increase the dose of the sleeping pills, he didn't seem very affected she passed) by trusting a bad vet, but then after all, maybe he was not a bad vet, maybe people lied. wtf?
He is young, in his 20s. He only cares about his friends and gf and barely speaks with me, have no idea why, but I also won't make an effort to, everytime I asked questions to know what was going on in his life he wouldn't tell much and would say I was annoying him.
Is this a phase or is he starting to be like my parents?

2023.06.08 14:47 Relevant-Somewhere57 Simparica trio vs Revolution
Is there a reason why everyone keeps trying to push Simparica every time I ask for Revolution? We sometimes go to a preventative clinic instead of our regular vet since it is cheaper for prescriptions and vaccines. One of my dogs wonât eat treats and another gets an upset stomach easily so she doesnât get treats typically unless itâs pumpkin based but I see no use in giving her a med that she might throw up and not get the benefit of taking anyways. Iâve expressed this every time and they still push it at the clinic and our vet. I just donât get the hype.

2023.06.08 14:19 WorldlyStructure8155 AITAH for not giving my sister her dog back?
Background; I (32) have always cared for animals and have worked in the industry for almost 13 years. Working as a vet nurse and dog trainer. My sister (37) has a small fluffy dog. Now where I have been made feel like an A** Hole.
Throughout my sisters care of her 3 year old dog, I am always bugging her to get him groomed. Over the past 12 months he is always matted and she always would be late or miss his grooming appointments. (Even with a reminder 2 hours prior). 6 months ago I had arranged his groom as he was severely matted, and he hasnât been to the groomer since. Today my staff member picked him up (I run a dog adventure & training business) and took him out for hydrotherapy, we knew he was matted, however this time she noticed he was severely underweight. I was sent photos, which did not do it justice of how bad he was, so I had just advised he increase his food intake and get a blood test done. My staff member was unable to drop him home as my sister was out, so brought him to my house. Upon his arrival I noticed how skinny he was (I havenât seen him for a while). Imagine a fluffy whippet, but skinnier. Not to mention being matted to the skin (with burrs stuck within the matts). We took it upon ourselves to shave him at my house with the clippers I had. Once the clippers ran out of battery and being unable to find a charger, we went to a friends grooming salon (I have a key, as they were closed). However, notifying the groomer she decided to come help. When I told my sister I was not bringing the dog home and will take him to the vet tomorrow for bloods to be done. I then received phone calls and text messages from her and her partner, telling me Iâm overreacting, not being helpful and attacking them, because they didnât realise he was underweight. I explained I was embarrassed and disgusted by the condition of the dog. Even with his matted, dirty coat, you could feel his ribs, spine and hip bones.
Am I the a** hole for not giving him back, and telling them they can meet me at the vet clinic after he has his bloods taken and gets a talking to by the vet. (FYI I work at the vet clinic part time)
Edit: For those wondering, yes I do put blame on myself. But why should I be blamed for the responsibility of two grown adults? I have organised care for this dog so many times. I am devastated that this poor dog is in this condition and I have put my foot down, which will cause a massive rift within my family. I am hoping all the evidence I gather and professional options will convince my sister to allow me to rehome him and give her the wake up call she needs. Otherwise she will be reported to the animal welfare agency.

I have two general admission tickets to the Metric show in Wichita, KS next Friday night. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, but the tickets shouldn't go to waste! (Not a bot, even though that's what a bot may say).
Would love to give these to a die hard fan that otherwise couldn't make it, or someone that's never been able to see them before. I saw them once on this tour back in 2022 and it was INCREDIBLE.

2023.06.08 13:49 Agitated-Bottle6523 Concerned about my kitten's weird breathing
Hey everyone! I've been taking care of a kitten for the past six weeks. I found him alone on the streets of Cyprus when he was just four-five weeks old. I've made sure to get the kitten vaccinated and administered all the necessary pills as recommended by the vet.
Lately, I've noticed something a bit concerning. The kitten, now around 10-11 weeks old, occasionally inhales loudly as if he's struggling to breathe. This happens maybe once or twice a day and lasts for about two to three seconds. It happened the last night while the kitten was purring and almost asleep when I gently touched his stomach.I consulted the vet about this issue previously, and she assured me that the kitten's lungs were clear and sounded fine. The kitten is also eating well and remains an overall happy and active little furball, but sometimes he sneezes. However, I'm still unsure about what could be causing this behavior.
I tried researching cat sounds related to coughing or asthma attacks, but I am not sure if it is the case. It doesn't sound like he's trying to expel fur or have a hairball. I did wonder if it could be related to asthma and if the tofu litter I'm currently using might be a trigger (but generally he is fine just after using the litter box). Although it's not dusty, it does have a faint vanilla scent. If asthma is a possibility, could anyone recommend an alternative litter that I could use instead?
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to capture a video of the kitten inhaling to show the vet. Can anyone shed some light on what this might be or suggest ways to describe the symptoms to the vet more effectively? I want to ensure I provide all the necessary information for a proper diagnosis.Thank you in advance for your advice!
