I have a BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering from an average university and have been working in the Mainframe industry since I graduated college around 4 years ago. Right now I make $160k as a mainframe tech consultant. I'm on track to make over $200k in a couple years. Problem is, I don't like what I do and it's starting to take a toll on my mental health. I feel stuck right now because much of the experience I've gained in the past 4 years is mainframe-specific and not transferrable to other jobs.
I want to pivot to working with technology that is more modern and exciting. AI/ML/data science in particular excite me not just because of the hype but because I have a genuine interest in them. Even if I can't go straight into AI/ML I think a move into a more modern software engineering job would be a huge step in the right direction. Now I'm trying to decide what steps I need to take to make the move. Going back to school for a grad degree and sacrificing $320k+ in salary + 2 years of tuition/living expenses sounds pretty terrible to me.
So, can I break into a more modern software engineering job without going back to school by learning the relevant skills, doing projects, and building a portfolio in my spare time? Is a good career in AI/ML achievable without a graduate degree for someone with my background?

Hi everyone, I've just read this story and ended up enjoying it greatly. Although I didn't find it as scary or disturbing as the other ones - it was rather very tragic and sad. I loved how it was all told from a geologist's perspective, who doesn't call things "black stone", "grey stone", but rather knows what exactly they are, so we get some insight into how old some buildings of Elder Ones really are. Also I have to praise many sci-fi tropes in this story, remembering that these were not so well known as they are today. I was surprised by how modern it all seemed. Huge intergalactic empire colonizing planets, advanced bioengineering (seeding planets with life), rebellion of artificial lifeforms, wars between alien races. I didn't expect so much to say the very least. All was brilliantly tied to the established timeline (there were different old civilizations in other stories). Even the fall of Elder Things seems to convey Lovecraft's message about this "uncaring universe" pretty well - no matter how much you have achieved, one day ruins will be all that remain.

Unfortunately - I had two main problems with the story:
- The pacing. Some fragments are extremely complicated with long convoluted sentences. I had to read some parts several times to get what the author tried to say. During the lengthy descriptions of the environment it was tolerable, but for some reason even the only action sequence (running from the Shoggoth) had parts like that.
- The fact that main characters read so many details from the reliefs. Wall carvings are given as an excuse to tell the full story of Elder Things, but it was a completely different culture, culture we know nothing about. In reality Dyer and Danforth should at most get the general idea what MIGHT have been portrayed. These beings used weapons and technologies which are much beyond our level. There should be many symbols and allegories (used to present more abstract concepts like war) which shouldn't be possible to understand without extensive studies of the culture. The only things I had no problem with were maps and scientific diagrams, they can be pretty readable. Main characters weren't even archeologists, so we can't say they had experience with such things.

There are a few posts in there I was reading this morning that left me pretty shocked.
One post in particular: all the BPD’s in there seemed to be in agreement that their partner should constantly be aware of their list of triggers. They seemed to all agree that their partner should live their entire life with their triggers at the forefront of their mind.
The thing that disturbed me so much is that none of the BPD’s posting comments seemed to consider how tiring and draining it must be for their partners to have to constantly walk on eggshells and conform to their pwBPD’s distorted perceptions of reality. They all just seemed to be in agreement that any good partner should work really hard to not trigger them if they truly loved them.
At the heart of it, it seemed to me that they were all agreeing that their partners should treat them as though they were the center of the universe, constantly comforting them and validating their emotions no matter how unreasonable, and this seemed ok to everyone posting in the sub.
Anyway, if anyone needs a wake up call about BPD, their honesty in this sub about just how self-centered some of them are really shed some light for me…
It seems that extreme self-centeredness is at the core of some people with BPD, but the outside world rarely gets a glimpse of just how bad it is until they are truly honest about it, like in their sub.
I know in my case, I did try my best to constantly be aware of my ex pwBPD’s triggers, and it nearly killed me. I didn’t even have enough mental energy to leave the house most of the time I was so drained. And it didn’t seem to matter anyway. She would always find something to be triggered about no matter how hard I tried.

I posted this in another group and got a lot of mixed opinions. I just received new information about the higher paying job as well.
I was recently laid off from my marketing job. I’ve been looking for similar pay $80-90k per year, but it’s been tough and I haven’t found anything close to my house.
The $19/hr job would just be temporary to help pay the bills/not in my field. The $30/hr job is in my field. I’m not stuck on staying within my field. Both are 40 hours a week.
I’ve already negotiated the $19/hr so there is no possibility for increase in pay. Same with the $30/hr. I already asked about remote work for the higher paying one and it was a hard no. I also don’t have the means to move due to personal finances (my father in law passed due to Covid last year leaving us with a lot of medical expenses.) The new job is also in a much more expensive area which is not in the budget right now. Public transport is out of the question Bc the metrolink does not stop at the San Clemente pier at the times I would need to be at work/leave.
$19/hr I would be working an opposite schedule of my husband having no days off together. $30/hr we would have Sunday’s off together.
The commute: I would be commuting from Oceanside to San Clemente. Roughly 23 miles each way. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the commute only being 30 min to other people saying it will be upwards of an hour. The $30/hr job I would be starting at 8:30 am and ending at 5pm. Also asked about flexibility in hours and this is the set schedule.
My car info: I get about 31 mpg highway and 36 mpg city. My car is newer and has barely any miles. It usually costs me about $40 to fill up my tank from almost empty.
Can anyone give me some advice on what you would do? I could take the lower paying job temporarily while I look for a marketing job close to home, but the higher paying job wouldn’t leave much time for me to do that. TIA

Hi! I live in Ontario. I’m renting a house as a co-tenant with 2 other persons. I want to move out. I’ve found someone who is willing to take over my obligations under the lease. I was thinking of assigning my part of the lease or if not possible subletting my room. The landlord says that I am required to have the consent of the other tenants. They don’t want to consent to the assignment or sublet unless they get to choose the new tenant. The problem is that they don’t have anyone in sight whereas I have someone. I know that the RTA doesn’t address this issue. The lease states that the landlord has to consent to an assignment/sublet but it doesn’t state that the co-tenants have to. I’m wondering what the law is on this in Ontario. Am I legally required to get the co-tenants consent? What are my options if they refuse?
