Hey, I am looking at adding a 2nd dog to the family in about 6 months to a year. I am a 28M and work from home 9/10 days, and my wife is a 25F and is a teacher, so she is gone from 6:30am to about 5pm. We have 2 cats, and plan on having kids in a couple of years. We have a large yard, working on fencing now. It will be fully fenced well before any new dog.
Our current dog is a ~8 month old pyrenees mix (3/4 pyrenees, 1/8 chow, 1/8 st bernard according to embark) and is perfect for us as a family dog. He is very chill, independent (doesn't bother me often when I work), he is great with other dogs, kids, cats, etc. He is a great guard dog as well. The only negative is that I am a runner and he is definitely not going to be, even once he is old enough.
Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

• No, my wife and I both had plenty of family dogs growing up and we have one now. We have had labs, goldens, aussies, doxons, bulldogs, mutts, and our current pyrenees mix.

Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?

• I would rather rescue, but having cats makes that tough. We were successful with our current rescue though.

Describe your ideal dog.

• Independent enough to not constantly need attention while I work, great with kids/cats/other dogs/etc, good runner (3 miles per weekday, longer runs of 10-20 miles on weekends), 25-45lbs, not prone to separation anxiety, can be contained by a 6ft fence, short enough fur to run/hike at 80°F with rest and water during summer. For looks, I like wolfy looking dogs, but looks aren't as important to me.

What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

• GSP/Border Collie/Brittany/GSD/husky - great runners but may be more needy attention wise than I want and some are bad with cats
  
• lab/golden - great dogs but I am not sure how well they would do on longer runs, especially as they get older
  

What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

• 10+ basic commands, off leash running would be great as well.

Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?

7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

• Currently I do 2-3 hours minimum, not including small interactions during work. That is a great sustainable level for me. My wife does 1-2, but usually overlaps with my 2-3.

8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

• Currently I walk my dog for like 40 minutes a day (He is still young, following the 5min*months old limit), but I can do 1 hour minimum, at least 30 minutes of which can be running. We either walk around downtown, or play disc golf and he just tags along. We have dogs parks nearby, and some friends with dogs that we visit.

9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

• Daily brushing and regular grooming at home is fine with us.

• 25-45lbs, but not a dealbreaker

• a lot

• A mix would be nice, but do its own thing if I had to choose one

• Initial barking is fine, but they shouldn't be aggressive or jump after seeing that the people are ok. In public, no barking at strangers unless they are sketchy for some reason.

16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

• No, unless it is very minor

17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

• Chasing cats, jumping a 6ft fence, destructive behavior when bored

18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

• 9/10 days 0%, every now and then 8 hours. We will have someone visit mid day to break it up.

19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

• Our current dog is ideal for my wife, this one will be more for me. She like big dogs that are good with cats and love to snuggle. She grooms, takes him out in the morning, and plays with him after work.

20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

• 2 cats, 1 stupid and brave male, the other very timid and affectionate female. 1 male dog, pyrenees mix

21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

• Yes, on walks and eventually at home

22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

• No

• There are no breed restrictions in my city in Upstate SC

• We are totally fine with a mixed breed/mutt, which may be our best option anyways. Ideally we would get a dog 1-2 years old, ready to run, great with cats, etc, but those are pretty hard to find. I look through petfinder about once a week just in case a unicorn does show up though.

DOB: 5/15/10 - This charmer was rescued from the high-kill Downey shelter. He’s a real love bug. Would be fine with other cats and a gentle dogs. Can get feisty if he gets too excited, so kids might not be a good idea.
He is FIV+, but this mostly affects his immune system. Please discuss this with his foster if you have any questions.

So, I currently live in a dorm but I will be moving in with my boyfriend during the summer and will most likely be living with him from here on out. We’ve been talking about me (us) getting a pet, because I desperately desire that companionship.
Anyways, his parents have a cute little Australian Shepard who doesn’t get much attention, so he’s thinking of taking her off their hands. So that’s an option. We’re also tossing around the idea of getting a pair of guinea pigs, as more of a starter pet before we commit to a dog.
Either one is a decent option, but the doggy has been outside for most her life and might end up staying in a big pen outside (it’s a common thing where we live, and she would come in sometimes). The piggies would be a great option, but I also really want a dog. In fact, there’s a dog I found at a local shelter that I adore, but idk about having two dogs, or a dog and the piggies.
The doggy I love is special to me because she has a couple disabilities that are just like mine, and she’s the perfect breed for me. I also just don’t feel very attached to his dog, so I kinda just want one of my own, though I realize that’s silly and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
I dunno! We still need to talk about it more, but at this point I’m not really sure what I want to do 😕

I've been wanting to get a service dog for years now, but the funding just might not work out yet. In the meantime, I've been pursuing finding an emotional support dog, because I just really need that companionship and support.
I started searching the internet for local rescues and Craigslist ads, and I found one little girl that I am absolutely in love with!! She has a birth defect, so most of her legs are a little wonky, and she has a bad eye. But she's a beautiful shepard mix who just looks so happy and loving, and the shelter says she's super sweet and completely unfazed by her disability. They also say that she requires daily medication, but that it's really inexpensive and they'll send along several months' worth.
I am currently begging my boyfriend to let me adopt her, but he feels bad because of her deformed legs and says it breaks his heart too much. I think he'll come around eventually, especially if we go meet her and play with her for a little while. I am head over heels in love already, and I just know that she and I would have a special bond!!
So, fingers crossed that this will work out!

Kalinda is a beautiful 6 year old long haired Calico princess, who wants to be treated that way. She is affectionate, tolerates other cats, but definitely will be the alpha. She has a colorful personality that will warm your heart and keep you guessing.

I'm the co-director of Sussex County Storm Dogs in northern NJ. We are a few dedicated individuals working with multiple rescues to help 19 displaced dogs from Houston.
We need some help. Do you know a pit lover that can take on a young Red Nose with dog/cat/small animal aggression. She can not be trusted around small animals, and I would not adopt her out into a home with other dogs. I would feel comfortable only adopting her out to a pit savvy person with no other pets. She's a total babe with people, but I can't trust her around any other animals. She hates the shelter, she wines and barks and digs in her kennel. She was so much happier in a home. If she is deemed unadoptable (I only have my shelter space for 2 more weeks or so) then I'll have to bring her to my local no-kill where she will live in a kennel for the rest of her life. Please let me know if you know anyone on the east coast who can take her. She is a total mushy love bug, very low-energy in a home, totally meant to just live on someone's couch. Heartworm positive, not spayed yet. Her heartworm treatment is already paid for and we are in the process of it now. Her spay is scheduled for the 29th right now.
If you take her on, we will sign her over to you, give you her heartworm treatment, continue to provide funding for her care, and spay her.
I love her and I promise she is a wonderful pit bull, but her issues with other animals is making us worry for her well-being.

Essie (SC–for Silver Creek), was abandoned at Silver Creek High School. She made friends with some of the students, but some were downright mean to her, throwing rocks at her :( One student at Silver Creek decided to call local rescues to see if anyone could save Essie, so we stepped up. But unfortunately, in the meantime, she had given birth to five little kittens. So we picked up Essie and her babies and took them to one of our fabulous foster homes. Essie was the best mama ever–she even took in a single bottle baby we acquired a week after rescuing her!
Essie has been with us for a very long time. She is a portly, happy cat who loves to be on your lap (she might even drool, she’s so darn happy to be loved!) and will even get super excited for belly rubs:) Because she has been with us for so long, it will take her time to adjust to a new surrounding. But she will definitely become your best friend in short order. Please consider this girlie. She is 5-6 years old and has a ton of life left in her. And she’d love to have a home to call her own …

UPDATE: within minutes of posting this, my daughter came in with a face swollen from eye down into neck, and in severe pain. She has been admitted to the local hospital for iv treatment of a fast-moving cellulitis infection. I saw someone below brought up the Dunbar bite scale, and my dad will be following up with his animal control in MD, the local animal control in wv, and the rescue itself with a copy of the Dunbar bite scale, and documentation of her bite. Thank you all for your advice. We are more concerned about her cute face right now than the dog, but do NOT want this to happen to another child. This mama is worried.

My Dad, MD, got a rescue dog from a private adoption society in WV. Adoption society said they knew little of his history, except he had been spirited from SC to WV for private adoption, as he was set for death at a shelter in SC. The dog was advertised on PetFinder and listed as temperament tested, and the rescue society stated during his interview that the dog was well-adjusted, had no behavioral issues, and was ok around people, dogs, and cats, and had obviously been a house dog because it was potty trained, and knew what the front/back doors are for. Listed as a bulldog/corgi mix.
Upon bringing the dog home two and a half weeks ago, he immediately began using a trainer, to help the dog with adjustment and teach basic commands. He had two training sessions to give basic training advice and last Saturday the trainer spent an hour and a half with the dog and me/Dad, stated he had clearly been used in some sort of dog fighting (which I could also see) as he had hairless scars on his face, inner thigh, and lots of rips in one ear. Trainer gave lots of detailed advice on what to work on, how to approach "recovery" since the dog is uncontrollable upon seeing other dogs - Dad figured that out as soon as he began trying to walk him, and the dog adopts a fighting stance and freezes whenever it can even smell another dog around the block.
Upon meeting my daughter (10yo) Wednesday evening, the dog was great, although Dad was very mindful as this was the first child he had been around, and went through the introduction steps trainer had taught. However, he did not take crazy precautions like a muzzle because as far as he knew, the dog had been temperament tested. The dog was friendly and outgoing, no anxiety like licking lips, yawning, shaking, staring straight ahead which would indicate it was overwhelmed and needed a break. Our kids have been raised around numerous dogs and know the basic rules of don't stare in the eye/don't approach face-to-face/don't grab food or pet while eating, etc. After half an hour, the dog suddenly leaped from a sitting position up into her face and bit. At the time, she was standing to the side of the dog, petting it on the head & praising it for having completed a "sit" command. She had a 2-in long severe laceration from beside her nose down to the bow of her top lip that completely penetrated her face so we could see her teeth through her lip, which required plastic surgery at Johns Hopkins. We will return in 2ish months for further cosmetic surgery depending on how the healing & scar progresses.
From the moment that happened, the dog's behavior completely changed. It immediately began pooping & peeing in its own cage, and unpredictably growling and snapping at any human other than my Dad (I say unpredictably because it really acted like cats do sometimes.. allowing you to pet, showing its belly, leaning against you for affection and then suddenly snapping with NO warning), and it also attacked a neighbor dog immediately upon being near it (neighbor had brought his dog over to meet it, since his dog is very submissive & he thought it would be a good "first friend" for the rescue dog).
Dad's contract states that if he cannot keep the dog, he is legally obligated to return it to the same rescue that he got it from. Is there anything he can do to protect himself? He is very concerned that this dog is going to be rehomed with no mention of its issues, as the aggression/fear it has towards other dogs was evident the moment it even saw another dog with him, as well as the aggression/fear it has towards humans. The rescue had five other dogs in the home, but now he realizes that when they had him interview & bond with his dog, it was in the back yard & an area of the house completely away from the other dogs. His/our worry is that he can be liable when (not if, WHEN) the dog harms another dog or person, because he returned the dog. He was very clear and showed the foster pictures of the damage it did to my daughter, and submitted a written statement documenting all the issues he noticed when the dog suddenly changed, to the director of the rescue. Director did not respond in any way. Can he be liable in any way for what the dog does next?
TL;DR because that got long: Dad got a rescue, adoption society did not disclose dog's temperament issues, dog attacked my daughter requiring surgery, and then attacked another dog (all within 12 hours), Dad is contractually obligated to return dog to the same rescue for rehoming. Could he be liable for the dog's next attack, or is there a way to protect himself?

I volunteer with Carolina Kitties, a group that takes in unwanted cats and helps spay and neuter feral colonies. We recently got a group of 20 cats in from a house being foreclosed on. I'm volunteering with a local no kill group. These ladies take in cats that would otherwise die and keep them at their houses or wherever they can until finding them a home. All cats are thoroughly checked out by a vet, spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. These are some of the ones that are harder to adopt out. Please consider taking one of these in if possible.
Evie is about 10, with a thyroid condition. She almost died in the shelter before being taken by Carolina kitties. Declawed, so indoors only please.
Belle is a black long haired lovely, shy when she first meets you but then she's good. She's also around 10. Her owner died and the family wouldn't take her in.
Yuki is solid white, and also approximately 10 but still very active.
Gretchen is approximately 7 years old and very affectionate. She is front declawed and has a growth on her belly. Indoor only please.
KiKi is a 3 year old tabby found on the streets.
Jessica, (laser eyed kitty photo), is a 3 year old tabby who loves affection and head bumps.
Teeny is only a year old and a bundle of energy and affection.

I've posted about Rudy on here before, trying to find him a home. He is a gorgeous 2 year old boy who is blind. His owners dumped him and his sister off at the shelter I volunteer at. He is only two years old.
We have had a pretty bad URI going around, and Rudy caught it. He became seriously ill, and another one of our volunteers took him to the ER on her own, since the shelter doesn't tend to spend that much on any of the animals. This woman's name is Ali, and she has taken in many of our cats with special needs, such as a kitty with thyroid problems recently, and another who almost died from the URI named Sunny. She has had to pay for these herself. I have become very attached to Rudy. He is a real sweetheart and loves attention. He gets around well in spite of being blind, and just needs a home, which I'm hoping might be mine. Anyway, the vet that Ali took Rudy to had to admit him. He was dehydrated and has something going on with his kidneys, and it seems he has something other than the URI he is fighting. He is being put into ICU and may have to have a feeding tube for a few days. They did an ultrasound and his kidneys have improved some, and they are saying it is not genetic, but rather caused by whatever it is he's fighting. We are asking for donations towards his vet bills. It is likely to be several thousand by the time he's done, but it doesn't seem incurable at this point, so it's not wasted money.
