2023.06.08 10:26 BlissBoneMarrowGuy Why You Should Register as a Bone Marrow Donor.

Hello, I'm the Fort Bliss Bone Marrow Guy. I'm a specialist in the army who started an initiative at my first unit about 8 months after I arrived out of AIT. I ran around shamming out of work to go suave my way into Battalion CSM offices all around post so I could organize Bone Marrow Registry drives at their unit. Doing this for a year I registered 3000 soldiers all around Fort Bliss. After catching some good ol media buzz hunting for good PR, building a bunch of resources off everything I learned the hard way while doing this work, and some semi-ethical power moves. 1AD decided to pick up the program as a yearly initiative across every unit on post. It's called Operation Ring the Bell.
This program has the sole objective of registering as many soldiers as possible into the National Bone marrow donor registry through Salute to Life. Currently I'm working to cement it into Fort Bliss yearly operations and SOP. As well as working to get other bases on board and mirror the same yearly program. Though my real love is when other individual soldiers like myself reach out and learn how they can organize these drives at their unit. Whether it's just for awards, recognition, or their own big heart; I don't care because it saves lives. I will make every effort to ensure they get whatever they need to get those registrations. As well as every single drop of credit for their work.
WHY YOU SHOULD REGISTER
Bone marrow is that funky spongy bit in the middle of all of your bones. This is where white blood cells are made, which make up your entire immune system. Chemotherapy destroys your bone marrow's ability to create white blood cells, often making it incapable of recovering on its own. So you're on heavy-duty antibiotics until you find a donor. Getting a donation is a lot like jumpstarting your 29% APR dodge charger, a little bit of juice and the whole system can start right back up again so it can drive on to get pulled over for illegal tints another day. Registering as a donor does not mean you will be donating today, this year, in ten years, or more likely never at all. Bone marrow is entirely unique to donating blood or plasma in this way. The only way you'll ever get a call to donate is if you are almost genetically identical with someone who needs your specific bone juice asap. The chances of you ever donating are astronomically low. That's why registering is so vital.
If the vape clouds and diesel fumes catch up and you find yourself laying on the hospital bed. Tossing back antibiotics every day like breathmints before prom so that a rogue sneeze in another room doesn't wipe you out. You're going to need a bone marrow donor. You're not just going to need any bone marrow donor. You're going to need a very very very specific donor. And it's actually very unlikely that they are going to be from your family. 70% of the time you need to find your genetic twin from some random place in the country. You have to hope that there's someone somewhere that's your genetic twin and just as handsome as you are and that they registered as a donor. You're going to have to hope joebillybob from Nebraska took a minute from wearing shorts in the snow to donate some spit and get on the registry. His DNA is so close to yours that they can take his bone marrow and plop it into yours, and your body will recognize it as its own DNA and not just immediately reject it and kill you.
This system seems pretty rigged from the start, but the system is lucky that it's made to find donors for humans. And humans love to make more humans. This system works because there are 8 billion of us on the planet and by sheer probability you're likely going to have a just-as -handsome twin somewhere with a just-as-ate-up hairline as yours. But the only way to find them is to register. Notice I haven't been just describing this system as you donating. 14,000 Americans a year are diagnosed with leukemia. Tens of thousands of people a year are diagnosed with other illnesses that require chemotherapy or other methods. Registering to the database isn't exclusively to give you the chance to rack up some huge good karma. You or someone you know just might be so unlucky to be one of them. If that happens and you need a marrow donation;
-Unless you want to wait around in a sanitized room for months waiting to just get processed into the registry you'd likely better register now.
-Unless you want to see your friend, brother, sister, spouse, children deathly pale lying in that hospital bed sick for months while you and your family rushes to get registered to see if you're the lucky 30% whose family can save them and having to waste crucial time just to get your DNA sequenced and made searchable in the database.
You had better register sooner than later.
You could have a million reasons for saying no to registering but if the biggest excuse is that you're afraid of that big needle going into your bones or your spine. That reason is no longer valid. They do not touch your bones anymore. 80% of all registrations are done by PBSC. That's stem cells, but from your blood. If you've donated plasma you've essentially done the exact same process of donating bone marrow. Two needles, two arms and a pill that sheds bone marrow stem cells into your blood accompanied by some sitting around watching "grey's anatomy" for the 15th time. Completely painless, completely noninvasive. That percentage of PBSC has gone since Ring The Bell started, and it's only going to go up more each year as medical technology improves. You will not have a spinal tap, that hasn't been an option in decades. If you need to travel they cover wages, travel, per diem, and allow you to bring someone along, all expenses completely paid for.
Hundreds die each year waiting for their nurse to run in and tell them they found a match. Dozens die each year hearing their nurse tell them that their match said no when they called. Parents dying before they can see their kids grow up. Children dying before they get a chance to grow up.
You will never have to donate if the time comes and you're a match, you will never be forced to save someone in need. You could register today just to safeguard yourself for the future, and that's absolutely fine. But if you ever find yourself desperately needing a donation, spending months or even years nauseated and sick from the medication, you'll be praying that your only genetic match in the country picks up that phone and says yes.

2023.06.08 09:15 efo4478 A man lost his memory after a car crash in the snow, and there’s a killer after him at the hospital.

I read it more than ten years ago when I was in high school.
Estimated the era of publication: Mid and Late 2000s or maybe before 2012
Language: Europe or English (I read the Traditional Chinese translate version at that time.)
The summary of the story:
A man had a car accident in the snow. He lost his memory due to the accident and was taken to a hospital (or some kind of facilities).
The details that I can recall was that his eyes were injured and required eye drops because he worn contacts when the car accident happened, and he lay in the snow for a while.
There was a woman who treats him nicely at the hospital.
He found himself trapped in the hospital with that woman, and they had to escape from a killer who couldn't speak due to a throat injury.
Eventually, he discovered that the woman was the one who truly wanted to kill him, and the killer was just wanting to remind him to beware of that woman.
(The reason of why the woman wants to kill him, I remember it was related to their relationship in the past or about their children.)
Sorry for such vague description, thanks for all of you reading this post!

2023.06.08 08:46 MummyCroc I am a government employee in Zimbabwe and I turned 34 this week (TW: Mentions of suicide)

Occupation – Government employee
Age – 34
Location – Zimbabwe
My salary – $500 (paid monthly)
Side Gig Income – $0
Other income – negligible amounts from dividends received from my stock portfolio that I re-invest
Housemates – 4 (husband P, 6 year old L, 4 year old E and nanny F. My nephew M is around and makes appearances too)

Assets and Liabilities

Equity $60,000 fully paid off
Retirement Balance ?? I contribute monthly, and employer matches fully. But because of changes in currency and hyperinflation, I don’t really count this as an asset
Savings $1700 (went down due to travelling trying to get my passport done since it expired)
Current account balance $660 Includes my mum's money since I'm managing her financial affairs while she's abroad
Loan from employer $130 I took a personal loan from work, because the interest rates are lower than rate of inflation and repayment is over 18 months. Loan was used to make improvements on our house, and what wasn’t used, I bought shares on our stock exchange, due to hyperinflation, the amount I owe in US$ has gone down
Investments (shares in various counters on our local stock exchanges) $1,186
Car $4,000 Based on current resale value. Car was bought secondhand for cash

Income progression- (https://www.reddit.com/MoneyDiariesACTIVE/comments/vbbb7s/i_live_in_zimbabwe_making_3600year_and_i_just/)

Expenses
This year, my husband and I decided that he would take on the bulk of our expenses since I do most of the domestic work/childcare. Expenses I pay will be indicated. My salary is now for my expenses, my investments and my savings, and spoiling the kids. Husband caters for the family basics. There was a point last year when I felt my husband wasn’t as invested in the family because he barely did anything financially. By having him cater for all expenses, he is now definitely involved and invested. My husband’s income is just about the same as mine, slightly higher at some times.

My Expenses
Expense Amount /period Note
Car insurance and licensing $300/annum This is due in March, and I pay for the entire year
Petrol $60/month
Electricity $10/month
Airtime/data $20/month
Groceries $60/month This is for additional groceries such as bread, veg and fruit bought during the month
Kids’ clothes $40/month I’m trying to build up their winter wardrobe so I try to buy them something each month
Makeup/clothes/toiletries/ supplements/hair $30/month I do not us this much monthly though
Water $15/month Based on last bill received in April. We do not get water consistently so bills are infrequent
Donations $20/month Ad hoc donations to a soup kitchen, and maternal health fun
Stock market investment $50/month May invest more or less, but I do try to buy shares every payday

Household Expenses (paid by P)

Expense Amount /period Note
Groceries $200/month Bulk grocery shopping of staple food items and toiletries
LP Gas $30/approx. every 2 months We buy when it runs out. Usually every 2 months depending on how bad the power supply is
Medical $15/month For OTC meds (painkiller, cough syrup, antacid stocked for emergencies) and any prescriptions
Pet expenses $60/ twice a year For vaccinations and checkups for 4 dogs. Pet food is covered under groceries
School fees for the kids $347/ term One kid has fees paid every month, the other every 3 months
Nanny $80/month Less than before as both kids are now in school fulltime, and nanny is there to get them ready for school and care after school for 3 hours.
DSTV subscription $37/month
Transport for kids to/from school $60/month L gets picked up and dropped off at home daily, E is dropped off after school

Previous MDs - (https://www.reddit.com/MoneyDiariesACTIVE/comments/vbbb7s/i_live_in_zimbabwe_making_3600year_and_i_just/) and (https://www.reddit.com/MoneyDiariesACTIVE/comments/yc801g/i_am_33_years_old_and_i_just_graduated_with_my/)

MD Q&A
Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Yes, I have a BSc in Accounting, a Masters in Accounting, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Taxation. My parents both have Masters degrees, and in my family, the bare minimum acceptable for education was getting a Bachelors. My mother paid for my undergraduate degree, and I paid cash for my postgraduate studies.

Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money?
My parents divorced when I was very young. My dad is the wealthier of the two, my mum has always been middle-class. My mum brought me up with very little financial help from my dad, he only covered tuition and healthcare until I turned 18. My mum catered for everything else. My mum taught me how to look for bargains, how to save and invest, and also how to sometimes enjoy your money.

If you have, when did you move out of your parents'/guardians' house?
I would say I moved out at 26 when I got my current job. I had moved out when I got my first fulltime job, but moved back home when that contract ended

At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself? Does anyone else cover any aspects of your financial life?
At 26 again. That's when I earned enough to cover all my bills without needing help. My husband P covers some aspects of my financial life, and my mum occasionally helps out with stuff for her grandchildren.

What was your first job and why did you get it?
I worked as a receptionist at my mum's law firm after finishing my A Levels (age 18) while waiting to start university. My mum gave me the job to keep me occupied and out of mischief, lol.

Do you worry about money now?
I worry about building generational wealth for my children. I want to make sure they will be set for life as adults. I do worry about money because hyperinflation is eroding my earnings and retirement dramatically. This is my second time losing my retirement. My mum and in laws are losing their retirement for the third time, so honestly our old age looks bleak if we do not invest outside of work pensions.

Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income?
I receive negligible dividends from the shares I own, lol.

Day 1
0430 – I’m woken up by loadshedding. I sigh, rollover, and sleep some more
0600 – Alarm goes off. I turn it off, enjoy cuddles from P and finally get out of bed. Our water tanks ran out 4 days ago, and council has not yet deigned to give us water, so we rely on P’s parents and friends to give us water. I get my water that was warming up on the stove, and take a quick bucket bath. I moisturize, do my brows, throw my lace wig on (I cut my hair in January, and I’m at a really awkward stage where my hair looks bad when I wear it out all day) and get dressed. It’s cold in the mornings so I put on winter stockings and a black and white chevron patterned dress, nude ballet pumps plus my warm jacket. I get E from the couch where he was watching Cocomelon and my lunch bag out of the kitchen and we head off to his school. After dropping off E, I go to the office. No electricity means no elevator, so I go up the stairs. I see my boss’s boss and greet him as we do the ZESA (local electricity company) sponsored workout. I log in to the work register, fill up my kettle, and settle down to check out my work email. Nothing urgent came through overnight, so I go into my personal email. The wig company I patronize has given me a code for my birthday, and I’m wondering if I should pull the trigger on my cart. I decide to do a report while thinking this through.
My mum is currently working out of the country, so I am managing her local finances/obligations while she’s away. I remember I have to buy the prepaid electricity token for my childhood home as well as for the house she lives in when she’s working in the country. I spend $23 on electricity for both houses (mum’s money so doesn’t count)
1030 – After doing some firefighting and office gossip I have my breakfast. Today its rice, peas and 2 fried eggs. I sprinkle some peri-peri Aromat on top since I don’t have a sauce/gravy ad I have been craving spicy food lately. I also pop my multivitamin and supplements. I check my team’s work and send back anything that needs correcting. I also generate the multiple reports my boss expects from me. I suddenly remember I need to claim my allowance for performing a role that is higher than my actual position at work. I quickly complete the form, and send it to my boss for his signature. The extra money from this is what I use to fund my stock market investments. I also remind my team to send a report to me for consolidation by noon.
12.00 – I do a major push of all my work due today so I can relax after lunch. I compile my reports and set them ready to send. I also finish my first 2 litres of water of the day, and cue up the next 2 litres
1300 – Its lunchtime, and my work bestie and I head out around town**. I find shorts that L would fit and buy 2 pairs for $10**. We head back to the office and I have caramel popcorn for lunch. Then I remember I forgot to have my afternoon meds, oops. Anyway, more work before heading to an audit meeting
1630 – The audit meeting is finally over, and I rush to shut down my computer, pack up my things and go home. I have an agreement with my manager that as long as I make up for the hour, by either coming early or skipping lunch, I can leave work at 4pm. I had a total hysterectomy end of last year so I still can’t manage driving in heavy traffic. I arrive home, make the bed (P had not made it when he went to work), and harvest chilies from our garden that have ripened. I also harvest a local herb used as a flu remedy and lemongrass, so I can brew up a tea/tisane for the flu affected people in my house. I also pack L’s lunch for tomorrow, a pie, a naartjie and juice. It’s also F’s payday, so I give her US$80 (P gave me this money).
E says he is hungry so I feed him sadza and sour milk by his request. I multitask covering L’s school textbook while supervising his homework and watching Married to Real Estate and the Great British Bake Off. I then have my dinner of sadza, greens and beef. I have a chat with the kids about their day at school. P gets home.
1900 – P and my nephew M go to fetch water from P’s friend’s house. The city council still hasn’t opened up our water supply. I do some French on Duolingo while the boys wreak havoc in their playroom. I read L and E their bedtime stories and put them to bed. I decide to do my hair in cornrows while watching Masterchef Australia. They get home and I help them carry water indoors. I remember that when power comes back I need to boil tripe on the stove, so I cut it up, put it in the pot with water, salt and garlic, and place it on the electric stove. We have serious loadshedding these days, so we have a gas stove and solar power to tide us over. I take a quick bath and change into my pyjamas. While P watches TV, I read Wild Sweet Love by Beverly Jenkins and continue to do my hair in cornrows.
2200 – My arms are tired and I’m only halfway through with the cornrows. I give up and go to bed with P.
Total spent - $10

Day 2
0600 – I hear crying. E is in a bad mood today. I turn off my alarm, and go to see what’s wrong. E does not want to get dressed for school. I sigh, and help F dress him while he throws a massive tantrum. E is dressed, so I go do my morning routine of shower, moisturize, contact lenses, and eyebrow makeup. Today, I wear a green dress I took from my mum, black tights, nude ballet flats and a black and white coat. E gets put into the car by F, and starts crying for porridge. We are already late, so he learns that the consequence of refusing to eat his porridge on time is to go to school without having his porridge. It’s not a big issue though, as he gets fed at school. So I lock the doors and windows and drive him to school as he throws a tantrum for the entire 10 minute drive. I shove him into the school gate and head to work.
It’s another ZESA sponsored stair workout today. I log into the register, and fill up my kettle with water. I switch on my computer, check my work email and send off client emails to my team for their response. My personal email has an annual report from one of the companies I have shares in so I check out if there’s a dividend this year. I own a negligible number of shares in the company though, but 28c per share is quite impressive. I check to see if my stock exchange wallet has been credited with the money I transferred there so I can buy more shares. It still hasn’t so I send a follow up email o the enquiries desk at the stock exchange. I do have a stockbroker, but I prefer doing my trades myself. I also do some French on Duolingo before 8am.
0830 – Our HR is in a tizzy because people are late for work. I don’t make a big deal out of it usually, because salaries are shit and people are demotivated. As long as my team shows up and does some work, I’m ok. I approve some work, and warn my team about coming in a bit too late. I also tell a teammate that she will have to cover for me on Monday as I am taking the day off. Our internet connectivity is shit so I can’t log into our system to check some stuff. My work bestie gives me avocados from her house. I almost cry because I have been craving avocados, but been too cheap to buy them.
1000 – I have a really bad sore throat. I am also hungry since I haven’t had breakfast yet. I jot down my shopping list for the weekend and head to Pick ‘n’ Pay to buy carrots, green peppers, tomatoes, lemons, cheese, polony and bread. I also buy my breakfast/lunch, which is rice, beans, ox liver and egg salad**. It all cost $10**. I leave my shopping in my car, and go to the office to wolf down my food, and take my multivitamin and painkiller. I also receive my wigs that I bought in May. Perfect timing, as I want to wear a new wig tomorrow for our girls’ day out.
I do some more work, and remind my team to send me the information I need for my daily reports.
1300 – I go out to buy a few items I didn’t find in Pick ‘n’ Pay earlier**. I go to Spar and buy peas, eggs, soft drinks for the outing tomorrow and a sausage roll. Total cost is $10**. The outing has been deemed kid friendly, so I needed drinks for the boys to have tomorrow. I get back into the office, and spend the rest of the lunch hour working.
1600 – It’s finally time to go home. I send my email to handover work issues for the person who will take over my role on Monday while I am on leave. I also send my out of office email, and head home. The kids are at their grandmother’s, so I take a leisurely bath, put on my pyjamas and eat dinner. Then I watch Masterchef Australia until P and E get home. I also get in some French Duolingo practice
2000 – P goes out with his friends, so I snuggle up on the couch with E and watch TV. I put E to bed, read him his bedtime story and kiss him good night. I finally finish season 13 of Masterchef Australia, and move on to My Kitchen Rules Australia. I love Australian reality shows, ngl.
2200 – I go to bed P gets home and tells me some bad news about a friend of ours. I feel very sad for him. He cuddles me and we sleep.
Total spent - $20

Day 3
0700 – I wake up feeling like a truck ran me over. I get out of bed, and get ready to hand-wash our laundry. We still have no running water so we can’t use the washing machine. I play music while doing my laundry to keep me motivated
0900 – Laundry has been hung out to dry. F has cooked potato curry, so I boil eggs and water. I have my breakfast of potato curry, egg, multivitamin and coffee. Once I’m done, I give E a bath and dress him. I also bath, moisturize, do my brows and get dressed. I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt today as my friends and I ae supposed to take our kids out for a playdate. Then I receive a message that the outing is cancelled since one of our group is really sick. I try to think of something I can do with E, since L is out having fun with his grandmother. I do my Swahili Duolingo practice.
1100 – The welder comes to do some work on our garage door. I monitor the work for a bit, and then my nephew takes over. E starts really bugging me to go out. So I put on my headband wig and sneakers, and pack a cooler bag with snacks and drinks. We head into town and I buy myself some ciders for $9. These are for me to drink when the mood strikes me. E wants to go to a resort by the lake so I oblige him. We pay $8 for our entrance. He goes to play on the swings, and I take pictures of him having fun. Another family turns up, and one of his classmates is among them. He’s so happy, and goes to play with his friend. I watch him running around.
1500 – I get a call from my friend that she’s in town with my cake. This cake was meant for the cancelled outing. I pack up our stuff, hustle E into the car and drive back into town. I let out some colourful swear words when I realise I forgot to get our change of $2. Anyway**, I meet up with my friend and get the cake, and pay her $30**. It’s so pretty. I call my MIL while still in town to find out what time she will be there so I can pick up L. She says it will be an hour, so E and I head home to drop off the cake so it doesn’t melt in my AC-less car.
1600 – We are back in town waiting for L and MIL. E wants an ice cream so I buy him one for $0.50 using money I had in my Innbucks wallet. MIL calls and asks me to head over to where she is to pick L up since she can’t leave yet. E and I get there. MIL gets me sadza and goat tripe stew, which I eat a bit of to be polite even though I am not hungry. When I’m done, I pack up the kids and drive home. I bath and change into my pyjamas.
1800 – I feed the kids, and we play until their weekend bedtime of 8pm. I read them their bedtime stories and tuck them in. I watch TV and iron my morning laundry while having a gin and juice until 9pm, and head to read in bed. P and my nephew arrive home from their amateur soccer league match and subsequent outing with the boys. I fall asleep soon after.
Total spent - $49.50

Day 4
0700 – I’m woken up by L demanding that I come and play with them. I am still sleepy so I fob him off.
0900 - F knocks on the door and tells us she is off to church. I finally get out of bed and get dressed. I see the boys playing relatively peacefully so I let them continue with their antics. In the kitchen, I find F had cooked breakfast, and since I’m starving, I heat up water for coffee. L surprisingly isn’t hungry so I serve up breakfast for P and me. I have my daily multivitamin. P heads out to go fetch water, while I bath, change and hang out with the kids. I also do my French Duolingo practice for the day
1200 – I have played with the dogs and kids, and I am exhausted. I collapse onto the couch and watch MKR Australia. P gets home, and naps on the couch. I give the kids haircuts and baths.
1700 – L is hungry and really wants cake, so I feed the kids a dinner of sadza and sour milk. Then some cake for dessert. I also pack L’s school lunch, which will be a polony sandwich, a cupcake and juice. The kids play until its bedtime at 7pm. The usual routine, bedtime stories and tuck in is done
2000 – P and I watch a movie while having some alcoholic drinks.
2200 – Bedtime for us
Total spent - $0

Day 5
0600 – It’s my birthday today. I am going all out celebrating myself since TW I tried unaliving myself twice in the past year. L wishes me a happy birthday before he goes to school. I get birthday messages from my mum, dad, SILs, and friends. I also get a call from my brother, his wife and their son, and they sing to me. I feel very loved today. P goes to drop off E at school today so I can sleep in
0800 – I am finally up and hungry. I cook a quick breakfast of boiled eggs, and a bean curry. P takes my car to get serviced, while I bath, moisturize, contact lenses, do a full face of makeup and get dressed for the day. Today I wear a tie-dyed cutout mini-dress and sneakers, and my wavy headband wig
1300 – P is home and he drives me to a hotel outside town near a renowned tourist site in our country. We have a platter of fried fish, chicken strips, pork strips, fries, and a salad to share and multiple Savannah Drys while there. It’s really nice getting to reconnect after a very tumultuous year in our marriage. P pays.
1700 – We drive around the area, before heading home. Once we get home, P and my nephew go on a hunt for water, while I feed the kids. P and I head off to take our showers. I remember why I don’t do a full face of makeup when it take a long time to get the makeup off my face.
1900 – The family sings happy birthday, and we eat cake. Birthday gifts were gin and chocolate. I hustle the boys off to bed. No story today, as they went to bed later than usual. P watches TV while I read my novel.
2100 – Bedtime for the grownups
Total spent - $0

Day 6
0530 – I wake up and lie in bed for a bit. Then I read my novel some more.
0620 – I am up, and take my bath, moisturize, do my brows and get dressed. It’s cold this morning, so I wear a yellow dress with black polka dots, black tights and ankle boots. I pack up the cake I’m giving to my colleagues, as well as my water bottle. E and I head out. I drop E off at school, and go to the office. I log into the work register, turn on my computer, and check my emails. There are a few pressing issues I need to get up to speed with. One of my colleagues gives me $50 as a birthday gift. I also hand out the cake to my team.
0900 – Work is pretty quiet today, so I update my MD. I also receive news that one of my nephews is getting married. He is not that much younger than me, and could be my younger brother, but it makes me feel so old.
Note on my family: In our culture, even distant relatives are given close relationships so the large number of nephews/nieces is from those relationships. It’s a big thing done to maintain close family bonds. I have 4 actual (in a Western sense) nephews and nieces who are all under the age of 6.
1000 – I head to the supermarket and buy bread, onions, carrots, pork chops, pork trotters and my breakfast and lunch. This costs $25. The meat is the main cost driver here. I have a sausage roll, my multivitamin, supplement and milk for breakfast. I remember that I need to check if my stock exchange wallet was credited, ugh. The website is refusing to load and I’m very frustrated. I finally log in and see the amount is still not credited. I email and send a tweet to the stock exchange. Hopefully the tweet will get them to start moving.
1200 – My boss is mad. One member of my team left his desk without informing me and there’s an urgent matter. I was about to go downstairs to give P the groceries, so I stick around for a bit before committing the same offence as my subordinate, lol. I quickly get back into my office and check on work, sign some papers and letters, and clear out my emails.
1300 – My work bestie has to run other errands at lunch so I decide to stay in the office. I check my personal email and see I have received a dividend of $0.27, lol. The share price will probably drop soon, so I will buy more shares in this counter if I can get them to increase my shareholding. My goal for this year is to breach the 10,000 share mark for one counter. I suddenly remember I have work to do, so I use my lunch hour to do the work, and then take a quick break to eat my lunch of fries and a sausage and do some Swahili Duolingo practice.
1500 – I am thinking of going home when one of my team members calls me to deal with an angry client. I go to the office, and find out it’s a surprise birthday party from my team. I am so happy, lol. We have more cake, and there’s also fruit and juice. I head home feeling so appreciated with even more cake.
1700 – P and my nephew go out to get water. I warm up my bath water, and give the kids their dinner. Today its rice and croc meat. I make L’s lunch for tomorrow, a toasted polony sandwich and juice. I also pack my lunch, rice, a fried egg and peas. And some cake for my work bestie’s kids. I take my bath; change into my pyjamas and hound E to eat his food. If we let that kid be, he would probably live on the bits of our souls he sucks out daily by being stubborn. I am feeling nauseous so I have plain rice with a bit of avocado. The kids watch cartoons, while I do some more Swahili on Duolingo.
1900 – Bedtime for the kids. Today, there’s no demand for a bedtime story, so I just tuck them in and tell them I love them. I read my novel as increasingly feel more nauseated. I end up going to hurl my guts out. P comes home and finds me lying limply on the bed. He gives me a cuddle, and goes to eat his dinner. I get up but smell fish, and run back to throw up. If I hadn’t had a hysterectomy, I would be doing a pregnancy test ASAP.
2100 – I go to bed, and lie in bed for a bit, before finally drifting off.
Total spent - $25

Day 7
0500 – I wake up feeling nauseated again. Ugh, this reminds me of having hyperemesis while pregnant. I put my water on to heat and get back in bed to read some more.
0600 – E comes to lie on our bed. I get out of bed, and go throw up. I get my bath water, take my bath, moisturize and put my contacts in. I look like a reanimated corpse this morning. I do my brows to try bring a bit of life to my face and get dressed. It’s very misty and cold today so I put on warm brown tights, a long black dress, my warm jacket and ballet flats. I grab my lunch and the cake, pop E into the car and head out. Visibility is extremely low, so I drive slowly. I don’t know why people like surprising other drivers by having their cars pop out of the mist without switching on their headlights. I successfully avoid the drivers who hate life and drop E off at school before heading to work.
0700 – I am in the office, and I log into the register, before turning on my computer and checking my work email. Not too much in there, so I check my personal email. My stock exchange wallet has finally been credited with the $100. I also ponder whether I should pull the trigger on a V-part wig.
I do my weekly report, and start doing some boring work in the system. I realise I didn’t save the work I did yesterday, so I have to re-do it, so I can have the list of error messages to send to ICT.
0830 – Everyone is in the office, so I do some reshuffling of duties, so that essential areas are covered while one of my colleagues is on leave. I give the cake to work bestie, who tells me how much her daughter was excited over the cake yesterday. It’s now time for me to put my head down and really focus on knocking out the system work today. I also log into an online training, and I listen while doing my work. My mum also deposits money for my birthday gift and to spoil her grandkids.
1000 – I log into my stock exchange account and buy shares for $99.14 (doesn’t count as spending, as the money was moved before the MD started). The deadline for other departments to submit their weekly reports to me for consolidation has passed so I start following up. One department is a big problem as they always send their report late. Le sigh. I draft a very passive aggressive email to them. I also decide not to buy the wig and instead ask the person making me my custom earrings that I got myself for my birthday to bill me the rest of the money so I can pay and move the remainder of the money in my account into savings. Our currency has taken an enormous hit in the last week, and is free falling dramatically. I’d rather keep USD cash than money in my account at this point. The training finally ends.
1100 – I’m getting hungry so I go warm up my lunch, sprinkle on peri peri Aromat and dig in. Yum. I also have my multivitamin and supplement. A lady who sells local snacks comes in. She persuades me to buy maputi (corn nuts mixed with roasted peanuts) for $0.50. I buy them for my afternoon snack. I end up sending the report with missing statistics, and tell the department to send directly to the compiler, as they were late. That was a very aggressive email tbh. I’m still hungry, so I munch on my maputi, leaving the peanuts because I don’t feel like eating them lately.
1200 – I see a missed call from a number I don’t know. I call and it turns out they had sent money to my mobile wallet mistakenly. I check the mobile wallet and it shows it had an extra $11. I send the money back to the person. Times are too tough to keep people’s money
1400 – I snack on a few skittles instead of having more food. I just want something to entertain my mouth, I’m not hungry at all. I review more work and drink more water. The jeweler has sent the payment request for the earrings. I pay $100 (total spent on the earrings comes to $200, which is worth it for sterling silver custom made Jewellery. I use $50 of the birthday money from my mum to cover for part of this expense)
1600 – Finally time to go home. I shut down my computer, and drive home. Once I’m home, I put on my bath water, and help L do his homework. Then I do some Swahili Duolingo practice and pack L’s lunch for tomorrow. He requested maize (corn on the cob), a boiled egg and a naartjie. His wish is my command for once. I also pack my lunch, a boiled egg, peanut butter sandwich and a bit of birthday cake. The jeweler sends pictures of the final product. They are absolutely gorgeous. Happy 34th birthday to me!!!
1800 – I serve the kids their dinner, and go to take my bath. P sends a text that he will be home late as they are working late today. I have my own dinner while persuading E to eat his food
1900 – Bedtime for the kids. I read them their bedtime stories, tuck them in and tell them I love them. Then I go to watch TV. I’m catching up on Married to Real Estate, Food Factory and Man Vs Food. You can tell that reality TV is my jam.
2100 – I decide to have some decaf black coffee and cake as my bedtime snack. P and my nephew arrive home. They are later than they thought they would be because nephew dropped his phone in the middle of the highway and they were searching for it. Because nephew’s ancestors were on the job, they found it intact. It’s a big deal because this is a major highway and huge trucks use that road constantly. I chat with P as he has his dinner and takes his bath.
2200 – Cuddles and bedtime for us

Total spent today – $100

Total spent this week – $204.50

Spending by categories
Food & Drink – $84.50
Home & Health – $0
Clothing & Beauty – $110
Transportation – $0
Fun & Entertainment – $10

Reflections on this week’s spending
The spending is pretty much about normal for me tbh (excluding the cake and earrings). I had quite a bit of petrol in the tank so I didn’t need to top up my tank this week. The converted US$ prices are a bit inaccurate since our currency had a big drop this week, and most of my spending is in local currency. I could reign in my spending a bit, and focus more on investing. However, I do enjoy using my money to bring joy to my kids and myself. Particularly myself after the absolutely shitty year I had.

2023.06.08 08:16 CedarSketches Ex-roomate wrecks my fiancé’s car and abandons us with the problem and now we have to go to court

Long story, TLDR at the end. So my ex-coworker calls me one day saying she’s pregnant and getting evicted. I made it clear I was unsure as I was in the process of getting rid of another shitty roomate, but I oblige and tell her she’s got two months max. Well like four months later we decide to sell them my fiancé’s car to boost our savings for moving out of country. We gave her permission to test drive it, on a dirt road (since it didn’t have tag or insurance) and according to her new roommates divorce lawyer since we gave her permission we are held liable. Keep in mind she doesn’t have her license or permit, and her passenger boyfriend had an expired permit. Well I did not give her permission to drive it down to go smoke at 4am when she knew the brakes were shot but said they had “fixed themselves”. She crashed it into a tree down an unnamed county dirt road, called me sobbing and apologizing and saying they needed to go to the hospital. Her boyfriend got stitches for a gash in his head, she got no treatment even though she was complaining of a massive migraine. I was calm, she promised to have it towed within two days and she’d pay to have it fixed. Cool. Well later that day we drop her off at boyfriends brothers house, and she keeps saying she’ll come back for her dog and to help with things. She never comes back. A couple weeks later at like 4am I see a state trooper drive down our road. In my 20 years of living here I’ve never seen or heard of a cop coming down here so I panic. Then a tow truck drives by and I’m like “shit the car” (she never got it towed out.) so I text her I’m like “hey this is happening and I’m sorry but it’s your responsibility to take care of this and find the car. She refuses to find the car, fiancé and I couldn’t find it, and we FINALLY get a letter in the mail from the towing company saying we owe ~$2,500 for storage fees. I send her a picture of the letter and she’s refusing to pay it since her new roomate has multiple children and she’s the only one working. She FINALLY comes to get her damn dog (which has destroyed over $2000 worth of our belongings as well as damaged the house) and I try talking to her about it but she’s still refusing to help. We just recently got a court summons to see if we want to protest their right to auction the vehicle. I don’t think it’s a criminal court proceeding but I’m still scared and don’t know what to do. I’ll edit later with the legal jargain they used if it’s important.
TLDR: Shitty roomate wrecks fiancé’s car with no tag or insurance or license, refuses to help whatsoever after promising to do so, now I have to go to court where the plaintiff is the towing guys.
If it’s at all important I’ve not spoken to the court or the towing company.

2023.06.08 08:06 WorldGovPressSec Climate Lockdowns from Canada Fires

New York State Government is suggesting residents “stay inside” especially if you have any “underlying” conditions. And if you must go out, wear an “N95 mask”. Canadian schools have already begun canceling “outdoor activities”.
These familiar suggestions come following the rush of smoke over the northeastern US reportedly coming from the Canadian wildfires. Wind patterns have conveniently pushed this smoke over the most populous areas of the US.
Additional investigations suggest that Justin Trudeau and his “penetrated” cabinet are assisting the World Economic Forum with launching climate lockdowns in the west. Other sources suggest world government executive, Bill Gates, is deploying smoke machines across his US properties. DHS’s Mayorkas has opened the southern border to allow CCP climate operations support personnel into the country. US Television President Joe Biden received instructions via cell phone from actual US President Barrack Obama to order HAARP to adjust the wind patterns accordingly, after receiving approval from the Top-3 in Davos and Geneva.
The Top-3 are holding a Zoom roundtable meeting discussing the potential ways this smoke situation can be milked and extrapolated into a crisis conveniently advantageous to fulfilling UN/WHO/WEF agendas that usually result in death, missing children, lost freedoms, and ceasing all forms of gasoline transportation, with the exception of private jets.
Additional reports indicate that the Branch Covidians plan to flood the hospitals and call on Pfizer to develop a vaccine that prevents smoke inhalation. Retired world government agent, Anthony Fauci, has emerged suggesting that masks might work this time.

2023.06.08 08:02 Gold_Ad5322 My sister-in-law did not want my husband to say goodbye to his mother, and I agreed with her.

This all happened in 2021, just a little after Christmas.
I(27f) have been with my husband (32m) for almost six years now (married for three as of this month). During the pandemic, my mother-in-law, who lived on the other side of the country, fell ill at the peak of covid on top of other health issues. About three months before this, my father lost his wife to cancer, and I was having a hard time getting off work to see him or my in-laws. We got married in 2020 at the start of the pandemic, which was the last time we saw my mother-in-law. She was healthy and wanted the best for us both. Of course, the pandemic made things worse. My mother-in-law was very anti-vaxx and was one of those people who believed the vaccination made your children autistic (it doesn't help my husband, though mild, has autism), but she did agree that staying at home was the best option. She had to leave home once to go to the hospital for a checkup and was soon admitted when she showed symptoms of what was later discovered to be pneumonia on top of COVID. When we learned his mother didn't have much time due to declining health, My husband wanted to get back to where his mom was so he could see her. I struggled to get time off. I worked in a tourist attraction, and they needed us for the holidays. They didn't let me go home to see my dad after his wife died because stepfamilies were not considered relatives at the time. I asked again for my mother-in-law when she was admitted to the hospital, but I got a write up for insubordination, my manager was convinced that I'm trying to leave to go enjoy holidays (don't worry, I quit this job as fast as I could and informed corporate about what happened). I could tell hubby was worried about her, especially because the last phone call involved an argument. When I was still fighting to call off work, my father-in-law gave the terrible news that it wasn't looking good. I called my sister-in-law, who lived one state away from them, to ask if we could fly to her house and risk termination at my work. But my sister-in-law broke down in tears and said to stay where we were. She said that their mom was hooked up to every machine the hospital could provide for her, and she couldn't handle seeing her like that. She then said she would never want her brother-my husband- to see her like that. If she couldn't handle it, there was no way he could. On top of that, I promised my mother-in-law that I'd take care of him as best as I could. I made a difficult choice to agree with my sister-in-law. and keep my husband from seeing his mother when she was sick. She passed away about four days after that call. My husband doesn't know that her condition was so severe, and I hate seeing him in pain. It's been a little over two years since she passed away, and my hubby finally admitted he wanted to leave our state and start fresh. I since confessed that while I wish we went up to say goodbye to his mom, I promised his sister and mother to make sure he remembered her healthy. He hated that I did it, but in the end, he understood I was keeping my promise to look out for him. We bought a house on the other side of the country closer to his sister and her family, and I'm going to begin working for my aunt's company. We agreed to do what we promised his mother and live happy lives.

2023.06.08 07:40 lucythelumberjack Let’s play “count the red flags!”

Let’s play “count the red flags!”
Let’s play “count the red flags”!
Let’s see, just off the top of my head we’ve got:
  • dog is named after the concept of Armageddon
  • magical same sex aggression appears at puberty
  • thousands of dollars wasted on trainers trying to train the fighting out of a fighting dog
  • making excuses for your dog fighting other dogs hard enough to break their ribs because “the other dog started it”
  • making excuses for your dog biting you bad enough to send you to the hospital TWICE
  • lunges at everyone except his owner, but he’s never actually BIT anyone (except his owner twice) so it’s FINE right???
  • dog is so maladjusted it is not allowed anywhere except its house
  • despite all this, dog is still allowed to be around animals as small as kittens and birds, and as large as horses, as well as human children
Then in the pictures, we’ve got: - pit bull alarmingly close to a fully grown cat - pit bull with a muzzle that admittedly LOOKS like it would work, but PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong! - pit bull with a “leash” that it can jump out of in .2 seconds - pit bull alarmingly close to KITTEN - pit bull with its mouth wide open next to another cat - uWu pit bull birthday party tee hee 🎉 - uWu SiLlY pit bull - pit bull in a child’s lap
Let me know if I’m missing anything, I think I’ve filled out a whole bingo card here!

Sun Herald paywall. Anita Lee article. Copy/Paste
Mississippi Coast business couple Ted and Julie Cain are trying to avoid paying a $32.6 million civil judgment against him for defrauding Medicare, the U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges in a lawsuit filed to collect the money.
Julie Cain is liable for repayment of $27.4 million of the total owed for her part in the fraud. The jury found that the couple billed Medicare over a 12-year period for work they never did at the former Stone County hospital, which Ted Cain owns and now leases to Gulfport Memorial Hospital.
The Cains had not paid a dime on the judgment by November 2022, government filings show. They are appealing the jury’s verdict in the civil case tried in U.S. District Court in Gulfport.
Attorneys for the government say the Cains tried to conceal their assets six months before their trial started because they were “staring down the barrel of a multi-million judgment.”
Before the trial, they transferred most of their assets to two trusts set up for their children, a son and daughter. Records show the Cains transferred 25 companies to the trusts, including LLCs that hold property. But Ted Cain controls those trusts through a management company, the government says.
“Hence, by the stroke of a pen, Ted Cain — who minutes prior was the owner of dozens of LLCs and real properties — became almost penniless,” the government said in a legal filing.
The government is asking the judge presiding over the case, Henry T. Wingate, to find that the transfer of assets was fraudulent, or assess damages against the trusts and its holdings. The government also wants to investigate the financial status of the Cains and the trusts.
The government’s ultimate goal is to collect the money the Cains owe and to prevent the Cains from drawing down assets from the trusts.
Wingate froze the couple’s assets before the civil case was decided. Ted Cain denies in legal filings that the assets transferred belong to him.
The Cains, represented by former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, say they transferred the assets to the trusts “for legitimate estate planning purposes” and no fraud was involved. They also say that they are able to pay the judgment against them, despite the transfer of assets.
The fight over the assets is set for trial in March 2024 before Wingate in federal court. The Cains, their childrens’ trusts and companies and property held by either the elder Cains or the trusts, are defendants in the case. Cain assets: from Biloxi to Hattiesburg
Cain bought Stone County Hospital in 2001, after it had closed three times. He testified during the trial that the 25-bed hospital would not have been successful and residents would have been without an emergency room had he not overseen its operation.
He paid himself more than $15 million for the oversight from 2004-2013 and his wife $2.3 million as hospital administrator. But testimony during the trial showed they did little work for the money, with the government insurance program Medicare reimbursing them $13 million of the total.
Government attorneys said in a legal filing: “Ted Cain’s ‘work’ failed to meet every single condition of payment and evidence at trial established that Ted Cain’s visits to the hospital were to the cafeteria for the fried chicken and catfish on Wednesdays and Fridays, respectively.”
The jury found the Cains collected more than $10 million of their salaries through fraud. Judge Wingate then tripled the damages, as the law requires.
As a young man, Cain, who was born and raised in Wiggins, followed his father into the nursing home business. He soon branched out, becoming the owner of companies such as The Focus Group advertising agency in Biloxi, Cain Cattle Co. in Perkinston and Quest Pharmacy in Hattiesburg.
Ted Cain owns hundreds of acres in Stone County, where he was born, including this cattle farm. The government maintains Cain is trying to shield his assets, including dozens of companies that he owns, from a $32.6 million fraud judgment he’s been ordered to pay in a civil case.

He also owns multiple properties, including a waterfront home in Ocean Springs.
His companies, with the exception of Stone County Hospital and Corporate Management Inc. in Gulfport, were transferred to his children’s trust. Both the hospital and CMI were also defendants found liable in the Medicare fraud case. Medicare fraud under appeal
The Cains appealed the fraud verdict on multiple grounds to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
They say the government bypassed Medicare’s administrative process for recovery of overpayments. Taking the Cains to court allowed the government to recover damages that tripled the overpayment.
They also say the government failed to prove the Cains “knowingly” submitted false claims because their hospital salaries were reported annually to the government.
Government attorneys argue the verdict should stand.
They say Ted Cain accomplished his fraud through a “sweetheart contract” between Stone County Hospital and Corporate Management Inc.
Ted Cain and co-defendant Tommy Kuluz, right, leave the federal courthouse in Gulfport during a break in a 2020 civil trial where a jury found they committed Medicare fraud by paying Cain and his wife salaries they did not earn at his Stone County Hospital. Kuluz is chief financial officer of a Cain company that managed the hospital, now leased to Gulfport Memorial as Memorial Hospital Stone County.

Kuluz is chief financial officer of a Cain company that managed the hospital, now leased to Gulfport Memorial as Memorial Hospital Stone County.
CMI charged the hospital “exorbitant” management fees to disguise the size of Ted Cain’s executive compensation at Stone County Hospital, which was 15 times the average, the government attorneys contend.
They also say Medicare was billed for “hundreds of hours” that Julie Cain did not work, first as hospital administrator, then as a consultant and director.
The Cains’ Medicare fraud appeal is still pending. Leasing to Memorial Hospital
Through legal filings in the assets case, the government has tried to establish a pattern of concealment on the Cains’ part.
When he leased the hospital building to Memorial in late 2019, Ted Cain did not disclose the Medicare fraud lawsuit pending against him, his wife and the hospital. The government says the lease terms required disclosure of pending litigation.
Cain also identified himself as the owner of Wiggins Acute Care, his company that owned the hospital building and would be leasing it to Memorial.
But Wiggins Acute Care was one of the companies transferred to the Cain childrens’ trusts created months earlier.
In its initial lease with Wiggins Acute Care, Memorial agreed to rent Stone County Hospital, now Memorial Hospital Stone County, for $129,000 per month. Fourteen days after the lease was signed, the Cains finalized paperwork that created the trusts months earlier, further indicating their attempts to hide assets, government lawyers say.
Cain paid himself the difference between Gulfport Memorial’s rent payment and the monthly mortgage of $94,503.37 that Wiggins Acute Care owed on the hospital, government attorneys say.
In addition to Cain’s own spending, government attorneys are also concerned because, they say, his children have access to, or are benefiting from, the appreciation of assets in the trust funds.

2023.06.08 07:20 Pyromolt Who's Afraid of The Future?

America is in ruins. Water is toxic. The sky is on fire. Food is carcinogenic. A woman who is raped and tries to receive an abortion will be criminally charged in 13 states. Cops are destroying the environment for the expansion of the surveillance state. Culture is meaningless, sterile, and dull. No one can afford to live. Everyone is in debt. The Democratic establishment are incompotent and completely oblivious to the reactionary turn of the GOP. Generation Z and Millennials live in an endless loop of reflexive irony, nihilism, depressive hedonia, and insincerity. Love is dead. Life is dead. The UAW/MF line of eating dead food and living dead lives now seems to be a literal description of the present.
2020 saw an unparalleled level of anti-government action, however theoretically weak it may have been. The fact that millions of citizens burnt down police precincts, burnt down stores, fought with the police in the streets... even in the wildest moments of the 60s (excluding May 68 for obvious reasons) no such mass action ever took place. May 68 was the closest example to the summer of 2020.
And yet-
As the same banality of the ever-expanding grayness of contemporary fascistic consumerist American life continues, there has been no further developments in the struggle against contemporary society. Who is afraid of the future?
Why has there been no mass rejection of the spectacle? Why, when the vast majority of people under 45 are growing up in unlivable conditions, does the present mood continue to be that of ironic detachment and hedonistic nihilism? No future for you, no future for me. How much longer can these conditions be tolerated? We saw a generation in revolt during the 60s, during a period of far greater complacency and stability for the average person. Why then, during the most alienated era of human history - now, one which brings with it financial instability and ruin, have the masses not shook off their chains?
The pervasive mood is irony and detachment. "Well you know, capitalism is bad, but there's not much I can do to stop it. Mine as well just consume as much as I can." I have met 16 year olds who tell me that they may as well indulge in hedonism as much as possible because there is no future. As has been repeated numerous times, this foreclosure of the future, and permanent static culture, is exactly what the bourgeois want. The end of history succeeds because the majority believe it. There is no alternative is less of a slogan and more of something taken as fact.
But there is always a future. History does not end. The boomers were described, prior the explosion of the 60s, as a generation of conformists. Lenin believed he'd never see a revolution. This alone proves that, despite what the spectacle would lead to you believe, future continues.
We are lucky, in some ways, to live in a time in which alienation is so commonplace. The radicals of past had to deal with a capitalism that worked for most people. No longer. Everyone is alienated, and everyone is poor. This is the time in which revolutions occur.
We can see the beginnings of the future coming into place now. Stop Cop City comes to mind. The TLM just a few weeks ago occupied several buildings. TI7 happened yesterday, shutting down major infrastructure in major cities. The outside is invading. A generation of psychedelic-noise-freaks will launch full-scale guerrilla information war, a mass-jamming of signals and signages; the underground exists everywhere. Humans were once connected at an unconsciousness level - we can see that we are rapidly hurdling towards a reconnection of the world. Subversion exists in life and autonomy, and the project of acid communism is yet to be finished. The children of Y2K and the end of history will rise from the depths of Cthell and accelerate towards explosive potentialities. We have hardly seen anything yet. The final moment is coming. The swarm is forming. We will breathe through our eyes and sing through our noses. We will be everything and nothing. In every school, every prison, every psychiatric hospital, every office building, you can hear them calling. The Internet will be rewritten. The specter of a society which yearns for freedom and life hangs large over the world. The New Earth exists in us all.
Our project is the creation of the future and nothing less.

“Pete knows what he saw, Martha!”

“Bunch ‘a frightened children ain’t exactly the--”

A door slammed shut.

Clark Kent, only a young boy, squeezed his eyes shut until it hurt and pressed his hands against his ears until his temples throbbed.

One step after the other. Heavy. Crunching grass.

“You think I’m an idiot, Martha?!”

“Now, I never said that.”

The pained look on Clark’s face softened -- softened, so it could be remolded into a whimper while the rest of his body stiffened.

“He ain’t done nothing wrong, all I’m saying is--”

“All you’re saying is that you’d rather not talk about it!”

“There’s nothing to talk about!”

Then why wouldn’t they stop talking! All of these voices, the thousand-million voices screaming at him, and all Clark could hear were the two arguing over him! Him!

A long, creaking groan. Wood shuddering.

“CLARK!”

The word, his name, knocked the other two sources of dismay from his head, an instant of soothing comfort before the pain took hold again and even more intensely, now as if he were pressing his head against a bass booster. “Pa!” Clark cried out, only to regret it as quickly as he had acted on the impulse.

“CLARK!”

His father called for him again and, judging from what should have been the imperceptible way the wind whistled, began dashing around in search of him; it took nothing less than an eternity for Pa to finally find him and one thunderous thwump after the other to finally lay eyes on him.
Pa pulled down the last barrel of hay -- Clark had stacked some around himself in an attempt to muffle the noise -- before breathing a sigh of relief; little did he know, it was a veritable wind storm to his son. “Remember…” he made sure to whisper, his small crisis finally abetting, if only a little. “This is all you. You’re inside your own head and that’s making it so much worse. You are the one in control.”
Clark’s only response was a strangled noise and to curl up further into himself.
To that, Pa felt his own throat tighten. “So open your eyes, son, get on back to the rest of the world… I’m right here.” He extended his hand, gently nudging Clark.
Again, no response and, again, Pa’s throat tightened, twisting and winding until the strain became too much to bear, and finally snapped loose under the pressure.

“DAMNIT, CLARK!”

He burst out, the sudden snap of tension giving each word a trembling quality as it all came pouring out. And then Clark flinched, like all boys do when they’re scared or hurt or both, and the dam was suddenly closed again, sealed with a silent promise.
“Son, I--” Pa stammered, his voice the sort of wreck so mired with cracks and creaks that it was a miracle it held together at all. “I didn’t--”
It was then that Clark finally stirred, hands at last unwrapping themselves from around his head, which peaked up ever so slightly to look out beyond his hay-fort at his father. “I’m sorry,” he said, voice so small that Pa struggled to hear it.
His body screamed a thousand different things to say, but he knew that just was the last thing Clark needed right now. So, fighting back to the calm, measured tone he had managed just a scant few moments ago, Pa said, “You best not be sorry, you ain’t done nothing wrong,” and pulled his son out from his refuge.
“Seriously?” Clark seemed dumbfounded by the statement, so much so that he even resisted the tug, if only for a passing second. “You seen what’s happening back there?” He jabbed a finger towards the house. “It’s all me. Literally. They’re arguing about me. ‘Cuz I-I’m some sort of freak or something!”
Pa was quick to correct him. “You ain’t no different from any other boy I ever met.”
He was met with a piercing glare from his son.
“You know what I mean, aside from your gifts--”
“How the hell’re these supposed to be gifts!” Clark threw up his hands in his best attempt at exasperation, but even an ear without super hearing could hear how his throat stiffened with each word.
Pa smiled, shrugging. “Able to race the car, leap the barn in a single bound…”
“But I don’t want to do any of that!” he said, voice finally breaking. “And w-when it comes with stuff like… this…! I just wanna be Clark Kent: Pete and Lana’s friend. Your and Ma’s son. Not some freak!”
“Clark--!” A cross of anger and dread flared in Pa’s voice, and he caught himself from pulling Clark into a hug. Swallowing hard, he instead summoned the warmest smile he could, ruffling the boy’s hair.

“You are my son, but you are so much more than that too.”

To say silence hung thick in the air would have been an understatement, because even silence was something more than being frozen in a single, inescapable instant: Kal-El staring down the man clutching his throbbing hand, the man’s friend looking on flush-faced, and the rest of the establishment bracing for whatever happened next. It was a rare thing that Jon Kent found himself slipping into Bullet Time on accident -- a state of heightened awareness where the world seemed to grow still around him -- and an even rarer thing that it should happen when a bright red cape wasn’t slung around his shoulders; simply put, as an instinctual reaction to being threatened, there needed to be, well, something that could threaten him, and there weren’t very many things that seriously could: Kryptonite, which Jon was confident wasn’t in play, and being yelled at, which he couldn’t have even known.
It was then that it dawned on him, so obvious that the muscles and tendons along Jon’s arm tensed in anticipation of slapping himself upside the head before he stopped himself -- a small thunderclap born from his own embarrassment was likely to only make the feeling worse. ‘Just an adrenaline rush…’ Jon explained to no one but himself. ‘Because… you know… watching dad do… that.’ The recently appeared doppelganger of his father had broken a man’s finger to “teach him a lesson” -- something his father most certainly would not have done; what he would have done, and what Jon was currently doing, was take a deep, relaxing breath, easing the stress away so that he could “hit play” on the rest of the world.
It came as something of a mild surprise when… nothing happened; Jon panicked, doing a double take as the terrible thought sprung into his mind: What if this was something else, some time-weapon unleashed just then on the city? Or what if he had failed to slow himself down? Would he be forced to wander the world a waking ghost? Jon shook his head, knocking such silly notions from his mind -- and also getting the attention of Natasha Irons.
“Something up?” she asked, broken from her spellbound trance.
Jon blinked. “Nope. Nothing.” The Ace ‘o Clubs could be a little rough around the edges, so what didn’t even qualify as a minor scuffle at the bar hardly registered with many of the patrons, who merely kept about their business as if nothing had happened -- because, to them, nothing had. Jon shook his head again, chidding himself for thinking that a cursory glance in that general direction had been any real indication of interest; his own bias, he supposed.
Kal-El returned to the table, his sheer weight and size making it known despite the fact that Jon’s attention had been elsewhere. No one said anything, and it took the visitor from another world a few passing seconds to realize that fact -- like they were all waiting for him to do something.
Kal looked up, a look of restrained puzzlement on his face.
Lois’s lips went thin. “What was that?”
“What was… what?” Kal-El’s eyes darted across everyone’s face, searching for an answer.
Irons nudged him gently.
“Wait, really?” he almost recoiled, tilting his chin up and cocking his head, confusion finally overtaking him. “I--”
“Was wrong.” Lois finished the sentence for him. “The hell were you thinking?!”
Jon and Natasha exchanged looks.
Kal-El shrugged it off. Literally. “The way I see it, a broken finger or two isn’t going to impede him in any real way, while also being something he’s not going to just forget.”
“So that makes it alright?!” insisted Lois, leaning forward.
“...yes?” he answered. “Though I feel like that’s… not the answer you wanted.”
That’s not how we do things here.
At that moment, with just how each word was frozen in a block of ice, Jon could have swore his mom had spontaneously developed Frost Breath; ironically, that was what inspired him to finally intervene. “You know, mom,” he explained, “In class, the professors always talked about how different all these cultures were from each other: food, clothing, language, medicine, you get the idea… Their sense of justice, how they handled punishments and such… that was one of the big ones too. Judeo-Christian morality versus something like Hammurabi's ‘an eye for an eye.’” He paused, making sure his mom was actually listening. “So, you know, on Kal’s Earth, maybe that was perfectly acceptable. Heck, there’re a lot of people here who would agree with him.”
Lois stopped to consider her answer, though it seemed more an imitation of the action than a genuine attempt. “He’s here now, and that wouldn’t make it right if he wasn’t.”
“Listen, I’m really sorry if--” Kal-El raised his hands in apology.
“No, no,” Jon waved him off, gaze never breaking from his mom. “You can’t just force your values onto another culture.”
“Like he forced that guy’s finger back?” she countered, rising to the bait. “Seems like that’s exactly what you’re talking about.”
“If I was talking about him right now, sure, but I’m talking about you,” insisted Jon. “You’re just doing the same thing you’re complaining about him doing.”
Lois lowered her chin, motioning towards herself. “So, wait, I’m the one who’s done something wrong here?”
“The both of you, yes.”
“So you’re saying it was perfectly alright?”
“I just said it wasn’t.”
“Oh, so you’re not judging him based on your own values?”
Jon shook his head, grinning. “You’re trying to distract from the point!”
“No, I just think the entire argument is flawed, since by criticizing someone like that, you’re inherently impressing your own values on them,” she explained. “You know, the thing you’re taking issue with.”
“But you’re from the same culture as I am: he isn’t.”
He isn’t sitting right here, yes…” Kal-El groaned.
Lois and Jon kept going like he wasn’t.
“He’s impressing his own cultural values on someone from another.”
“Right, and I agree, but I’m taking issue with you right now, because--”
“Because it’s time for this conversation to end,” Irons finally interjected, much to the audible relief of Kal and Natasha, whose shoulders visibly relaxed. “Seriously, I think I speak for all of us when I say I can hardly follow what you two are going on about.”
“We’re saying--” Jon and Lois began in unison, only to be cut off with a raised hand.
“We’ll manage without it,” he chuckled.
There was a brief lull in the conversation, a time where the most activity was Jon’s eyes scampering about the place and the beat of Kal-El’s fingers against the table. Eventually, Jon’s gaze locked onto something or, more accurately, the lack of something.
With his mouth hung open just slightly, Jon asked, “Hey, did anyone notice Mr. Bibbowski?”
“Yeah,” Natasha spoke up, glancing around the table. “Didn’t you guys’s see?”
She took the blank stares as a no.
“Didn’t you guys catch the sign-note-thing?”
More blank stares.
“Okay, seriously, two of you have literal super senses and the other two are, like, super geniuses.” Nat waved her hands around. “You know what, doesn’t matter. I’m getting off topic. Bibbo’s in the hospital. The sign was about raising money.”
“What?” Lois pressed, immediately leaning forward. “What’s wrong?”
His gaze a million miles away -- or, more accurately, only a few -- Jon answered first. “Lung cancer. He’s in Metropolis General. Room 414.”
Irons chewed his lip, then looked up directly into Jon’s eyes. “First thing tomorrow, you pay him a visit, ‘kay?”
“But I was just going to now…?” Jon cocked his head. “What don’t I know about?”
🔻 🔺 🔻 🔺 🔻
In retrospect, the thought that Kal-El would need somewhere to stay really should have occurred to him sooner than it had -- well, that might have been putting it a little too generously: had occurred to him at all. To be fair, though, it wasn’t every day that you met your deceased father from another world, though, also to be fair, he dealt with weirder things on a regular basis.
The Fortress of Solitude, Superman’s icy abode at the top of the world and one of the scant few remaining pieces of Krypton, seemed the most logical place to house Kal while they worked on returning him -- and everyone else -- back to the proper Earth, and it seemed that Jon wasn’t the only one who thought so. Following their malaise-laiden departure from the Ace ‘o Clubs, it was the immediate destination of the not-so-merry band, traveling up across the globe to it’s frosty doorstep, where they needed Jon to heft the Fortress’s giant, golden key above his head and unlock an equally gargantuan front door. The key was made of Supermanium, a metal forged by Clark from the heart of a dying star, and weighed an incalculable millions of tons, the only security measure needed despite it sitting out in the open.
Jon slotted the end of the key bearing the Crest of El into the groove, turning it to trigger the rumblings of icy shards as they peeled back to reveal a wall of blinding, cleansing white light. The group took a step forward, entering into another world -- almost literally: born of materials not of Earth and minds born far from it, the Fortress resembled something best described as an alien, crystalline landscape. The ground was a maze of large, roughly hexagonal spires with smoothly shorn tops, each of which peaked at a slightly different elevation and tapered off in the distance to create a sheer drop; at the edge of that cliff sat a circular array of crystals gently pulsing with light and humming just barely above perception. Placed around what was assumedly the central chamber of the Fortress, judging from the hewn hallway entrances at the perimeter, were trophies and mementos from Clark’s decades-spanning career as Superman, items ranging from the mundane, like Lex Luthor’s shrinking ray, to the absurd, such as psychic sand from the dimension of Quarm, to the profound, like the precious Bottled City of Kandor, a shrunken Kryptonian city rescued from the clutches of the vile Brainiac many years ago.
Kal-El loosed a low whistle. “Wow,” he said, eyes flitting about the place, jumping from the looming pillars that came together to form an arched ceiling, to the large, gaping voids dotted around where the spires didn’t conjoin. “It’s so… clean.
“Come again?” Jon quirked a brow.
With a flutter of his cape and a look that Jon almost mistook for melancholy, Kal-El raised several inches above the ground and began drifting between the various exhibits on display. “Clean. See, I… I live in my… Fortress of Solitude, so--”
Jon finished for him. “Like a dirty room.”
“Exactly,” Kal looked up from the display and flashed him a subtle smile. “Like a dirty room.”
Lois, unable to fly and wearing shoes ill-begotten for her husband’s arctic-O.S.H.A.-violation, carefully stepped across one hexagonal tile to the next until she finally approached the black-suited Superman. “Little lonely living at the top of the world, no?”
“It is called the Fortress of Solitude.” There was a slight edge to his voice, though Lois could tell it wasn’t one pointed towards her. “Maybe, I wanted to be alone.”
Lois cocked her hip, rested her hand on it, and considered for a long moment pressing deeper, giving in to the gut screaming at her that this was the thing to pick at. Her heart, though… her heart counseled now was not the time, and she had long since learned the wisdom of always following her heart. “If you’re looking for solitude, we might have brought you to the wrong place,” she suggested instead.
In the same manner Jon had not a moment ago, Kal quirked a brow. “What do you mean?”
“A thousand apologies.” From across the room, a voice not unlike his carried, though distorted to an almost unnatural bass and strained with what was best described as someone fighting hard against a thick accent. “If I had been expecting guests, I would have prepared something for you all to enjoy.”
The comparisons to Clark and Kal-El didn’t end with just the man’s voice; while his face and form were the same general shape, his skin was ashen and craggy, like a smooth stone. With every step forward he took, the mass of rippling, coiled muscle underneath his purple-blue Superman t-shirt strained against their confines. “Ah, I see we have another visitor, unless my brother decided death didn’t suit him.” He inclined his head, placing a large hand over his even larger chest. “For now, you can call me Bizarro.”
Natasha, a gleaming smile on her face, chimed in. “We’ve been working on choosing a name!” she said, bounding towards the behemoth and wrapping herself around one of his hulking arms.
Bizarro returned the affection as best he could. “It was Nat’s idea. We were watching Space Trek: Pathfinder one night and--”
“And I was there too,” Jon interjected.
“And Jon was there too,” he chuckled. “But one of the characters was searching for a name and, considering the circumstances, it seemed appropriate that I do the same.”
Floating over towards Bizarro, Kal-El dragged his sight up and down the man, the doppelganger of his enemy from another world, eyeing him with a mix of reservation and curiosity. Eventually, Kal paused on the Crest of El worn on his chest. “You’re not like mine.”
Bizarro nodded. “In one key respect, yes. I’m not as--”
“Dumb.”
Slow,” he finished, correcting him with a side-eyed glance. “While Jon was working a case with the Flash, Mister Allen devised a way to ‘speed up’ my thought processes.” (
Author’s Note: See The Flash #19!) Bizarro paused for several more long moments, looking at Kal like he had to him not a second ago before shaking his head, seemingly perishing the thought. “You’ve met me,” he said, smiling. “Have you had the chance to meet our other housemate?”
Kal cocked his head. “Other housemate?” He threw his eyes behind Bizarro, expecting someone else to enter the chamber, but no one came. “Another reformed villain?”
“Your cousin,” Jon interjected, taking a step forward. “Kara. She got here only a few months ago.”
The spark of joy on Kal’s face lived up to its description: appearing in a bright instant, only to vanish as soon as it came, replaced now by a deeply furrowed brow, emphasizing the lines on the man’s face. “How’s she taking the adjustment? Losing one world, then another, I can’t--” Kal cut himself off when he saw Jon’s eyes widen slightly and his mouth open in response: he didn’t need to wait for the correction he was about to receive. “She’s not from another Earth like me… Where is she? I’d like to meet her.”
Lois shrugged. “She’s busy in National City right now, if I remember correctly, but--”
Irons stepped behind Lois, his hulking form framing her. “But we’d like to wait a minute and figure out how to break the news to her first.”
“No,” Kal said, every muscle in his powerful body visibly tensing, rearing. “She needs my help! You don’t understand what it’s like! You’re not like her! None of you, not really. Only I can understand.”
With a withering look, Irons replied. “You’ve never even met her, how can you know better than her own family?
I am her family,” asserted Kal, beginning his ascent into the air. “I helped my Kara through this once already, I can do it again.”
“And you’re the problem! You know how much she’s going through right now?!” Irons shouted up at him. “You died! The person she was sent here to protect! Dead! And now here you are in the flesh and blood! She’s got a lot to process already without that!”
There was a lengthy bout of silence between Kal and everyone else, only coming to an end when the otherworldly Man of Steel asked, “And who’s going to stop me if I try anyway?”
Jon swallowed.

2023.06.08 06:31 iScreaminSilence Retaliation was my final straw

I’ve been working for a local doctors office since Oct. 2022, during these months, I have accept additional jobs, in addition to my original job, been crossed trained, accepted an additional position and maintained staying AHEAD in my job, all while balancing being a truckers wife with three kids and the caregiver to 3 adults. (Which was all made very clear when I was hired) recently one of my children was admitted to the hospital due to complications of an outpatient surgery that she had a few days prior. I requested the day of the surgery off as soon as her doctor scheduled it, which was almost two months in advance and I made sure that they scheduled on a day that would work best with my work schedule. Everyone was pretty confident that my child would do great after the procedure and we all couldn’t have been further from right. Within 24 hours, she did a complete 360 for the worst, within about 48-60 hours, I had to load her up and take her to the closes children’s hospital, which is two hours away. I made sure my manager knew that my daughter was experiencing complications. Well the ER trip turned to her being admitted. 24 hour observation turned into a 3 day stay. When the team of doctors told me that she wasn’t going to be released in time for me to go to work on Monday, I told my boss. She said okay. Monday rolls around, a patient requested injections that I would need to get authorization from via the insurance. But the doctor did NOT order them during the patients previous appointment so I did not get auth because DR didn’t order them. The assistant office manager and several other employees immediately blamed me, WITHOUT checking the chart to see if the DR sent me an order for the patient to get the injections for me to get auth for. Tuesday, I was able to go back to work. That same day, I was told that me CHOOSING to stay in the hospital with my child was an inconvenience to the office and it was my fault that they couldn’t find the auth for the injections that was never ordered…the manager and assistant manager attempted to justify the lack of common sense that clearly no one used to simply check the chart. Then basically demoted me for my “actions” or lack there of.
Am I wrong for putting in my notice to leave?
Keep in mind, this isn’t the only problem but that was kind of the apple that broke the camels back for me.
