2023.05.29 02:46 Dense-Willingness847 Ranking the Big Bads

My ranking of all the big bads.
  1. Zoom- Tony Todd voice, the suit...Truly a menacing villain. Backstory was meh and his story arc was derivative of S1 but everything else was more than enough to compensate
  2. Savitar- The Savitar arc is honestly my favorite of the show. Savitar broke Barry in a way that Zoom and Thawne did not. Barry was pushed to his absolute limit. Grant was fantastic as Savitar. Should have revealed his identity sooner.
  3. Thawne- S1 Thawne was aces but over the seasons Thawne lost his shine due to poor writing and Tom's borderline cartoonish portrayal at times. Matt's Thawne remained top tier.
  4. Cobalt Blue/Negative Speedforce- Rick Cosnett ate in the role. I enjoyed Eddie's turn to the villainous. Unlike his relative his reasoning for turning to the dark side made complete sense. I also enjoyed the subtle silimilarities and differences between Eddie and Eoabrd. Overall this deserved to be a full season, not just 3 eps.
  5. Bloodwork- Good job developing his origin story. I just love how manipulative he is. Sendhil definitely made this character. His arc featured one of the best eps of the series The Last Temptation of Barry Allen Part 1.
  6. Negative Forces- More interesting than the positive Forces. In general, I like the idea of negative counterparts to the positive forces. It madesense to me. Felt like a true threat. The way they switched out Iris so Barry kills his own wife then use her particles to resurrect Tom's Thawne was brilliant.
  7. The ThinkeDevoe- Neil was great in the role. I think they did a good job developing his origin story. Overall I did not enjoy the bus meta arc and he felt way too overpowered. But he had one of the most memorable scenes in the show with how he killed those guards
  8. Mirror Mistress/Eva- She could be switched with Devoe. Eva had a really interesting backstory. Finding out Eva herself was a clone was an unexpected twist. I loved her powers. I didn't blame her for wanting to kill her husband. It was cool that unlike a lot of villains she accidentally crossed paths with the Flash because she kidnapped his wife. Honestly I could put her above Devoe because I enjoyed the mirror arc far more than I did the bus meta arc.
  9. Red Death- Slightly better than Godspeed. Nice suit. Javicia did the best she could but overall a half baked villain. Arc needed a another ep to flesh out the backstory.
  10. Godspeed- Great suit, great use of powers. I'm in the minority because I did like the lightning sword fight. Overall Godspeed was lame. I didn't understand the point of the clones. He never felt menacing or like a actual threat. The best part of his arc was the introduction of Bart and seeing Nora again.
  11. The Forces- Liked the concept of other forces of nature. Execution was sloppy. Acting like the Forces were Barry and Iris's children was ridiculous. On the positive Deon and Bashir were interesting characters.
  12. Cicadas- Orlin and Grace did have good origin stories but I was not interested in either of their arcs.
A few notes. The finale was not taken into account since I feel each of the villains was disrespected

2023.05.29 01:23 WoodworkingLikeWard A Scholarly Summary of Skyrim - Road Work

A Scholarly Summary of Skyrim - Road Work
As we left Winterhold, I am thankful that our journey was fraught with far fewer perils than the day before, as my mind was still reeling with the possibilities of joining Curator Morellus. Before I knew it, we were coming up on Fort Kastav again. I saw movement on the battlements and prepared for another fight. Imagine my surprise, and then disappointment, when I saw the uniforms of the Stormcloaks.
https://preview.redd.it/fnspm0d33i2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea14de9570758b81b23f512dc79e9073b7248ae3
I think I was able to hide my emotions, but it frankly turned my stomach to see these ignorant traitors claiming the benefits for work I had done. I can only be but so surprised. They have already decided that they owe the Empire nothing for their freedom and defense. It would be out of character for them to consider the sacrifices and efforts of others.
We continued beyond the fort, past the former encampment of the Seducers, and eventually made it to the crossroads. I was temporarily tempted to turn east and spend the night in Windhelm, but Brelyna reminded me that this is the seat of the turncoat Ulfric Stormcloak and would be decidedly unfriendly to her as a Dunmer. We resolved to continue west, following the road to that promised to lead us to Whiterun.
Unfortunately, this is where our ease of travel came to an abrupt end.
https://preview.redd.it/hamw2i62nn2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=c9e5a417777e9c7abfe4bbc60e68dc6a1c29e07d
To the left of the road, I could make out an artificial barricade of some sort next to the destroyed remnant of a merchant's caravan. I could see figures moving around, but I thought it unlikely that these were the merchants. Given the encounter I'd had with the Seducers the previous day, I knew it likely that this was one of their raiding parties. As I crept closer, my hypothesis was confirmed: I could see the leader wearing their distinctive armor.
Brelyna and I crept up and sprung upon them. It was a pitched battle [Editor's note: she died twice], but we were able to overcome them. The more concerning thing I discovered, however, was a necromancer's alter in the center of the encampment! I must remain vigilant to any more signs of these bandits. They are more dangerous than the typical highwaymen and brigands that harry travelers.
As night fell, we passed a sign for the Nightgate Inn. What a pleasant surprise!
https://preview.redd.it/ck6ja6hgtn2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e5b7b13b54f8607e62e750cc1f9ec72af9ce8e9
The accommodations were sufficient, but I will say the conversation was severely lacking. The innkeeper was welcoming and professional, but the other patrons were...unimpressive. The orc refused to engage, and I wish the drunk would have followed suit. Nothing but vile racism. I did find some interesting notes about an investigation being conducted around the premises. Perhaps it relates to the Seducers?
The following morning dawned clear and bright. We left early, continuing west, but soon came across more bandits. Brelyna and I attacked aggressively, assuming to have again discovered Seducers, but it was over almost before it began. If I can be honest, I nearly felt guilty. We decided not to delve deeper into their lair and simply carried on with our journey.
We encountered a few wild animals (wolves, spiders, and bears, to name a few), but the rest of the morning was rather uneventful. As we turned south and descended from the mountains, I found a south-easterly path which seemed it may lead toward Fellglow Keep. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I found some ancient Nordic ruins and a grove of some kind, but it was ultimately a waste of our time. We turned back to the main road and hurried along.
In the mid-afternoon, we were solidly into the warmer farmlands of Whiterun. We even began to find the roads patrolled by armored guards of the hold! On the side of the road, I again saw a broken-down wagon. Fearing another incursion by the Seducers, I hurried forward to speak with the jester who seemed to be responsible for the situation.

Delayed Burial

Thankfully, this was just a simply thrown wheel. The jester, Cicero by name, was apparently trying to take his mother to her final resting place, but had run into mechanical difficulty. I was shocked to learn that the farmer at whose doorstep he found himself had refused to aid him!
I marched up to the hill to the proprietor, Vantus Loreius, and gave him a piece of my mind. He gave some jingoistic claptrap about strangers during war times, but I would have none of it. With a little determination, I was able to make him see the light and take responsibility for aiding someone in need. It hurts nothing help an innocent traveler!
https://preview.redd.it/96bi8mario2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=fca3b7fe480edaeb55536585808a7d0fe65576d7

With this matter resolved, Brelyna and I hurried to continue our journey. Just a few hours later, I found what I believe to be the path that would take us towards Fellglow Keep. I chaffed, however, as the sun was already beginning to set behind the walls of Whiterun. I forced to make a decision: would we press on along this path, climbing into the mountains once again as night descended upon us, or would we turn towards the city?
Frustrating as it was, I could not justify forcing Brelyna up that path. It was my choices that brought us here so late, and I had no certainty that this was even the correct path. If this turned out to be yet another false lead, I could doom us to either a sleepless night or one exposed to the elements. We marked this point on our map and set our sights on Whiterun's main gates. I am so thankful that we did!
https://preview.redd.it/mrc3gcgu2p2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=a49789e1115764e2f7f5306c511da1e85acabbad
A giant was attacking one of the farmsteads! Brelyna and I caught site of it from the road and joined battle immediately. It seemed there were others already assaulting the beast and our combined efforts were able to fell the monster. I spoke with one of them (she called herself "Aela the Huntress"), and she invited me to join their order of adventurers. The "Companions". I was as polite as I could be, but my intellect will be of far more use to the Empire than working as a glorified mercenary.

Finally, we made it inside the walls. The moons were already high in the sky, so we simply found our way to The Bannered Mare and bought a room for the evening. After a good night's sleep, we will finally address the thieves and traitors of Fellglow Keep!

2023.05.29 01:14 Low_Thick My ideas about the game's Final Act

Kraven kills Conners
Peter goes on a warpath to find Kraven
Peter catches up to Kraven
Symbiote Spider-Man Vs. Kraven
Peter brutalises Kraven and before he’s about to kill him he’s interrupted by Miles who was secretly following his position
Miles has told Peter that while he was searching for Kraven that Harry just died
Distracted by the news, Kraven is able to use the moment to escape, enraging Peter
Wrapped up in anger and guilt at not being able to say goodbye and having everyone he knows and loves either die or “betray him” he goes ballistic and attacks Miles
Miles Vs. Symbiote Spider-Man
As the fight goes on your Venom attacks start to get less and less effective to the point where the symbiote has nullified its effects. Peter in all his rage succumbs to the symbiote, becomes Venom and severely injures Miles
Miles is down for the count but before Venom kills him, something suddenly changes and Venom leaves. gurgling a a barley audible response
- “Stay outta my way”
For the next couple of days as Miles recuperates, he focuses on what what he heard, thinking that there somewhere inside that Monster is his best friend
A series of news reports inside over the next days entail that a monster has been attacking criminals and villains but not killing them suggesting that Peter is still there. This gives credence to Miles theory that Peter can be saved
Miles visits the Raft to speak to Doc Ock on how to stop Venom
Phase 1
Miles breaks Electro out of the Raft and they escape on the condition that he helps him take down Venom
Miles enlists the help of Prowler, Black Cat, Wraith, Taskmaster to fight Venom
Miles - Wants to save his mentor and surrogate older brother and do what Peter did for him when his dad died
Black Cat - Peter is her former lover and he never gave up on her she’s trying to do right by him in his time of need
Wraith - The same as Black Cat but from coming as a friend
Prowler - He’s Miles’ Uncle, of course he won’t let him do it alone
Taskmaster - Wants a challenge
Electro – Will have small subplot about undergoing rehabilitation and wanting to get rid of his powers so that he can live a normal life and take care of this daughter
Phase 2
Venom is hunting down Spidey Villains so not only do the villains have incentive working with Miles they also act as bait to lead him to a remote location where they can execute their final plan
Boss Fight
Venom Vs. Wraith and Taskmaster (Stage 1)
Venom Vs. Black Cat and Prowler (Stage 2)
In these fights you play as Venom who has to fight two of them at time like with the Sinister Six
Wraith and Black are there to act as psychological warfare (having a personal connection to Peter) while Taksmaster and Prowler’s advanced tech weaken the Venom symbiote over time
Still Venom beats them and before he kills them, Miles shows up and and a chase commences
Phase 3
You play as Miles with Venom chasing after you as you lead him to a remote location far away from New York
Miles and Electro Vs. Venom
You play as Miles fighting against Venom with Electro providing support (providing Miles with full bar Venom energy instantly)
The fight ends with a Electro supercharging Miles’, which kills Electro in in the process. Venom having taken too much damage is distracted as Miles unleashes his Super Duper Mega Venom Blast that destroys Venom, leaving just Symbiote Spider-Man.
Miles passes out from the exhaustion
Phase 4
Spider-Man Vs. Symbiote Spider-Man
We’re inside Peter’s head as he fights back for control over his body and mind in the classic red & blue suit against the symbiote Spider-Man
Think of it as a Scarecrow boss fight from Arkham that acts as a trip down memory lane with the symbiote taunting Peter, saying that he needs it
Peter finds the strength to rip the symbiote off his body as it scrambles to find a host, dying before it can

2023.05.29 00:58 TSMaynard1 [RF] ABP "Always Be Preparing"

Pine needles brushed across Paul's arms as he charged through the trees with his bugout bag slung over his shoulders. Weighing in at forty pounds, it hardly slowed him down as he’d practiced this hike many times. He flicked his wrist and checked his Garmin Solar 2 Tactical Watch. The timer read: 2:23.
“You can do this, Paul.” He increased the pace and gritted his teeth, the weight finally having an effect. Paul bounded over a small creek, up a rolling hill, and pushed through a row of baby birches into a clearing. He doubled over to catch his breath and looked at his watch one more time. Two hours and twenty-eight minutes. Paul pumped his fist in victory.
After a short break, he approached a thorny bush in the center of the clearing. Paul brushed aside sand at the bush’s trunk, revealing a yellow rope. He pulled it, which lifted a hidden door in the ground covered with dirt, shrubbery, and other camouflage on the top side, and drab gray iron on the other. Underneath, wooden stairs descended into darkness. Paul retrieved a flashlight from his pack, clicked on the beam, and disappeared into the earth.
At the bottom of the steps, Paul faced a steel door and a combination lock. With several quick swipes of the dial, he opened the lock and tugged the metal door, which creaked as it cracked open. Paul flashed the beam on the offending hinges and shook his head. Something to fix later. He stepped into the secret chamber and pulled a hanging aluminum chain that turned on a large halogen light, illuminating a twenty-foot by eight-foot metal rectangle. The exposed corrugated walls revealed the bunker was nothing more than a shipping container. Paul buried it two years ago and had divided the interior into three spaces. The entry had a shelf with four dozen gallon jugs of sealed water along with a portable toilet, stacks of toilet paper, and a wastebasket. The middle section was the main living area and contained a futon, a TV with a DVD player, and a neat collection of movies underneath. A nightstand housed a small library of books, including the Bible, The Art of Meditation, Buddhism for Dummies, and other spiritual tomes. The back area of the unit had two shelves filled with canned food—black beans, green beans, peaches, peas, carrots, beef, and chicken. There was also a stationary bike, which was Paul’s proudest accomplishment because he had rigged it to a giant battery that provided power to all the electronics.
Paul was a prepper, and this would be his home when the end of the world came, an event he believed was imminent. The global economy was a house of cards built on greed, corruption, and inflated asset prices, but worst of all, it was based on a faith in paper and digital money.
His fear was triggered four years ago when he attended a lecture by a professor who explained the fragility of the world’s financial system. If a few banks failed, it would rattle people’s confidence, causing a herd-like response. Thousands of people would rush to withdraw their cash, which the banks no longer had because they’d invested it. The banks would either fail, and everyday folks would lose their life savings, or the government would print new money to replace the missing money, making all money worth a lot less. Anyone holding dollars would attempt to convert them to other assets.
Just like dominoes, the banks would topple over one by one, and as they crashed, people’s faith in money would crater. After all, what was money? It was just paper with printed images and numbers that we’d all accepted as having value. More recently, money had become numbers displayed on a computer screen, something Paul knew firsthand as he spent the first seven years of his career working at a regional bank in Asheville, North Carolina. Paul could literally change someone’s net worth with a few keystrokes. He could turn a pauper into a millionaire, or he could bankrupt the richest account holder. Sure, there were safeguards, but all were built on faith, which Paul believed was misplaced. Most people didn’t realize that the Federal Reserve only required each bank to hold at least ten percent of its deposits as a reserve. Ten percent. That’s it. The rest of the money was invested in loans or other financial instruments. As the rich bank owners and executives pushed for bigger and bigger returns, they invested in riskier and riskier assets. The lessons from the financial crisis of 2008 had been forgotten.
Once the monetary system collapsed, the entire economy would become paralyzed. Without a means of exchange, transactions would halt. Think about it. If someone tried to give you a slip of paper that you thought was worthless, would you give them anything of value in return?
The doomsday scenario would escalate. Food and water prices would skyrocket, but with no way to purchase them, many would starve. But people don’t just roll over and die, they would riot and take what they need to survive. Marshall Law would be implemented, but citizens would revolt against the government they felt had cheated them.
As Paul listened to the lecturer that fateful day, a depressing epiphany struck. Everything he’d learned and everything he’d spent his life acquiring was worthless.
Growing up, Paul had been taught the value of money, saving, and planning for retirement. He internalized these lessons as a teen after his father got sick and lost his job. His mother had died when he was very young, but his father still managed to provide him with a stable childhood, even though they were barely middle class. When his father fell ill, Paul witnessed firsthand how fast a family could sink into financial trouble, which couldn’t have come at a worse time. He was applying to colleges, and instead of choosing the one he liked best, he chose the one that gave him the most financial aid, which turned out to be a small school half-way across the country. He also didn’t choose a major he was excited about; he chose the one that would offer the safest financial prospects—economics with an emphasis on banking.
The distance from home meant that Paul didn’t see the rapid deterioration of his father. It wasn’t until he returned for the funeral that family friends told him how the disease had spread. His father had refused to let anyone tell Paul because he didn’t want that to distract Paul from his studies.
After graduating, Paul accepted a job at a bank, and immediately signed up for the company’s 401K match. Most college graduates can't grasp retirement when they enter the workforce, but a 401K match was free money. Over the next several years, Paul worked diligently to advance his career while saving most of his salary. He’d mapped out his life on an excel spreadsheet and calculated that he’d be financially secure at 53.
Everything went according to plan until that damn lecturer came along and blew it up. Sifting through the rubble of his grand scheme, Paul realized that in the new world order, he possessed no skills to survive. The savings he’d so meticulously built up would have little to no value. When the economy collapsed, he'd be like a baby, unable to do anything for himself.
After a week of wallowing in despair, Paul rallied himself. “I can still fix this” became a daily mantra. To start, he threw himself into survival classes. The first was a basic camping course where he learned how to create shelters and start a fire. The next class was more advanced and focused on water purification and building snares for small game.
Paul continued working at the bank, because he needed to pay for the classes and survival equipment he began hoarding, but on his next vacation, he put his training to the test. He planned to camp for a week in the Appalachian Mountains, but the temperature swings, especially at night, were too much. Paul lasted three nights in the wild. The humbling experience forced him to admit that he wasn’t a bushman. His depression returned until he stumbled upon an article about “preppers”—individuals who prepare for end of world disasters. Suddenly, things made sense. He didn’t need to abandon all the comforts of modern society. He needed to prepare for the end of the world the way he had planned for retirement.
As Paul traveled down the rabbit hole of prepping, he uncovered an underground society of people like him who knew the truth about the world’s demise. Of course, not everyone believed it would end because of an economic collapse. Some thought a nuclear war would destroy civilization. Others feared electromagnetic pulses from the sun would wipe out all modern electricity. And still others worried a massive volcanic eruption would spew enough ash and soot into the air to blot out the sun. There was no shortage of theories about the world ending, but one thing was clear. The world would end. Did it matter how it happened?
Paul began his prepping quest by purchasing ten acres an hour and a half outside of Asheville. It had plenty of small animals and a creek running through the middle. He then transported an unused cargo container to the land and buried it. This was the toughest part of the plan because it required heavy equipment. Next, he dug out a staircase and installed a steel door at the entrance. Finally, he furnished it with a mix of modern comforts and survival essentials.
Almost every weekend, Paul trekked to his underground sanctuary and made improvements. He also planned his bugout strategy. When the end of the world hit, he figured he needed to be safely hidden in his home within two and a half hours, a time he had achieved with this latest trip. Everything was set, and Paul could finally relax. He was prepared.
Paul slumped down on his futon and considered playing a movie or cracking the bottle of Jim Beam whiskey he stored in a special cabinet, but he shook off the urge. Those things were the rewards and comforts he’d enjoy after the world ended. His fingers rubbed the top of the Bible, something he planned to read cover to cover once the global economy cratered. He’d have plenty of time then to discover his spiritual side, but not now. Something else needed to be done. Something he’d missed.
The biggest mistake a prepper can make is assuming he had everything covered. This was the lesson taught by Yannis, the guru of the prepping world. He was so well-known within the doomsday community; he only went by one name. The guy was sharp as a whip and could live off the land, if necessary, but he preferred a more sophisticated lifestyle, so he created a luxurious cave that contained backup systems for all his backups. Food, water, shelter, and electricity were all taken care of, and it was projected that Yannis could survive ten years comfortably after the apocalypse. His famous blog titled “ABP” stood for Always Be Preparing. It was a motto Yannis lived by and something Paul aspired to, but as he sat in his bunker after the relentless hike, fatigue set in. He didn’t want to think about prepping or his bugout strategy. He wanted to just be.
Paul tilted his head back onto the futon’s cushion, and a loneliness crept into his mind. All his prepping left little time for relationships. He dated off and on in college, but it was never anything serious. It wasn’t like his high school sweetheart, Kristin Summer. They dated junior and senior year, but then Paul broke it off when his father got sick. Paul couldn’t focus on romance, and he knew the relationship wouldn’t have worked when he left for school 1,500 miles away. It still hurt when he learned from a friend that Kristin started dating Derek Gorman, an old classmate Paul hated. It hurt even more when he found out they had gotten married.
After college, Paul joined a couple of dating sites, but he hadn’t used them in over two years. Most women wouldn’t understand his prepping lifestyle, at least that’s what he feared, so he rejected dating before anyone could reject him. But most wasn't all, and with eight billion people on the planet, there had to be someone for him. Almost without thinking, Paul pulled out his phone and opened “My Match,” the site where he’d had the most luck. His profile still had a photo from his early banking days. He was clean shaven with a naïve smile. The face staring back in the picture differed greatly from the bearded survivalist he’d become. Would anyone consider a relationship with the new Paul? Only one way to find out. He snapped a selfie, uploaded it, and then updated his hobbies with the first being “prepping” followed by “survival skills training.” He finished by pressing the button that showed he was actively looking for someone. All he had to do now was wait.
After spending the night in his bunker, Paul checked the dating site in the morning. No response. “It was a stupid idea,” he told himself, and stuffed his phone back into his pocket. He locked his container and returned home.
Over the next two weeks, Paul received zero requests for a date. He didn’t even receive a message from anyone to start a conversation and test the waters. “Shake it off, dumbass,” he said alone in the confines of his cottage-style home. “The world is going to end, anyway.” He clenched his jaw and did what he always did. He researched more ways to survive. Paul poured over blog posts and imagined worst-case scenarios. How could his water be contaminated? Maybe he should bury some caches of water. What if someone finds his shelter? Maybe security cameras were needed. What if he gets lonely in his shelter? No ideas came to mind.
After his eyes got tired from reading, Paul clicked out of his browser, and the list of all his apps stared at him. For reasons unknown to him, he opened Facebook, something he hadn’t done for months. There were a handful of notifications and a couple of friend requests sent weeks ago. His heart raced when he saw the name of one—Kristin Summer. When he accepted, he saw she was on-line right then.
Should he message her? Would that be weird right after accepting her request? But wasn’t it weird that he hadn’t responded for several weeks? He pulled up the messenger and typed. “Hey. Sorry for the delay in accepting your request. Hadn’t been on Facebook in a while. Been busy. Hope you and Derek are well.”
He curled his lip in disgust as he typed Derek’s name and considered deleting it, but he took the moral high ground and hit “send” with his message unaltered.
Kristin Summer. Just the thought of her name brought a smile to Paul’s face.
Bing.
The sound alerted Paul to a response, which he read out loud. “Hey Paul. Good to hear from you. Derek and I divorced a little over a year ago. It was rough at first, but it was for the best. How are you?”
Paul’s eyes widened with shock and excitement. He couldn’t believe Derek was so stupid to let Kristin go. Paul could at least blame their breakup on his father’s illness. His fingers prattled away on the keyboard. “Things are amazing.” He stopped typing. That was a lie. Should he pretend like things were great or should he be honest and tell her about his prepping and the end of the world? Neither option sounded appealing. He tapped the keys without writing until he settled on something uncontroversial.
“Working at Trinity Bank in Asheville. It pays the bills. Where are you?”
Within a minute, the sweet sound of the notification binged. “I’m not too far away in Durham. If you’re ever in town, let me know.”
If you’re ever in town, let me know.
Paul couldn’t believe his eyes. Was Kristin asking him out? He shook his head. Nah, she’s probably just being polite. But maybe. If there was any chance, he had to find out. He chewed his lip and deliberated his next response. Fortune favors the bold, he told himself. Then he remembered Matt Damon telling people that in the now infamous commercial for FTX months before its collapse. When that occurred, Paul thought it was the beginning of the end, and he lived in his bunker for two days before emerging and finding the world still intact.
Paul clenched his fist. It was still good advice, and he had to try. Almost involuntarily, he typed, “I’ll be there tomorrow afternoon. If you want to get together, let me know.” His finger hit send before he could talk himself out of it. There was no qualification in the message. No waffling or hedging. It was clear Paul wanted to see Kristin. The only question now was whether she wanted to see him.
The next ten minutes felt like ten days. Paul paced back and forth with his hands over his head, and he glanced at the monitor every few seconds, just in case his ears had missed the notification alert.
There was nothing.
A dark depression filled the room. Why had he gotten his hopes up? What was the point, anyway? The world was going to end.
Bing.
Paul leapt to the computer and his eyes widened with each word he read. “How about a lunch at The Fig Tree Restaurant on 7th?”
People overuse the word literally, but Paul at least felt like his jaw was literally on the floor. He had a date with Kristin Summer, the one woman he had loved. His hands rattled away at the keyboard. “See you at 1 tomorrow.”
“Holy crap,” he muttered to himself.
Panic replaced his excitement when he imagined sitting down and talking to Kristin. What would he say? “Hey Kristin, what have you been up to? Oh me? I’ve been working at a job I hate and planning for the end of the world.”
He drifted into the bathroom and stared at the scruffy character in the mirror. Paul could only cringe at the thought of Kristin’s reaction upon seeing him. She might not recognize the bearded loner who resembled Ted Kaczynski more than the short-haired, clean-shaven teen she last saw.
Only one thing to do.
Paul had to prepare. He opened a drawer and pulled out a pair of clippers. He began trimming his beard and mustache as short as the clippers would allow. Next, he applied a generous amount of cream and shaved all of it off. Paul smirked at the young man hiding under the shabby beard, but it still wasn’t enough. He set the guard on the clippers to a four and began shaving his head. In college, Paul cut his own hair to save money, and the skill came back to him quickly. He dropped to a three and worked in a fade on the sides and then finished with a two. Paul turned to the left, then to the right, and assessed his work. Not bad.
Next thing to prepare was his outfit. Paul slid the door of his closet open and evaluated his choices. A banker’s suit was too stuffy, and his mountain man denim was too hermit inspired. He yanked the clothes aside and climbed deeper into the recesses of his wardrobe until he found a nice buttoned-down shirt and a dark pair of slacks. It gave just the right vibe of successful and stable, while not trying too hard to impress, even though that was his precisely his goal. Paul laid the selection on the chair by his bed. Durham was a three-and-a-half-hour drive away, and he wanted to make sure he got there with time to find parking, and maybe use the restroom. He set the alarm on his iPhone for 6 a.m. That would give him plenty of time to take a shower, have breakfast, and get dressed.
There was no chance of falling asleep easily. His mind raced with thoughts, questions, and various scenarios about what the day would bring. To relax, he poured himself a double whiskey, which he downed with a single slurp. He poured another and sipped.
Kristin Summer. He shook his head, still in disbelief.
As the effect of alcohol set in, Paul laid down on his bed and shut his eyes. Tomorrow would be a good day.
Paul slipped into a deep, satisfying sleep until his mind jolted him awake. It was past 6 a.m. He didn’t know how he knew. He just knew. Paul had slept through his alarm. He snatched his phone off the nightstand, but it was out of battery. He checked his watch and saw it was 7 a.m. There was still time to get to Durham.
Paul jumped out of bed and into the bathroom. He flicked on the light switch, but nothing came on. Paul toggled it on and off, but the outlet was dead.
Police sirens wailed in the distance. Paul meandered out of his house and onto the front lawn. Aside from the sirens, there was an uneasy stillness. Paul’s neighbor Kurt ran out from his home with two suitcases that he flung into the trunk of his car.
“Kurt. What’s going on?” Paul asked.
“Fort Knox was bombed. All the gold was obliterated. And something happened to the electricity and the internet. They shut it down.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know, man, but it’s not good. No one has access to news, no money, nothing.”
“Where are you going?” Paul asked.
“I don’t know. Somewhere isolated. I’m just hoping there are no more bombings or other attacks.” Kurt jumped into his car and sped away.
This was it. The world was ending. All of his preps were about to pay off. But what about Kristin? Paul didn’t want the world to end. If he tried to get Kristin, there was no chance he could reach his shelter before things get hairy. Plus, there was no way he could find her. He didn’t have her address, and she might have already left Durham for somewhere safe.
Paul forced himself to focus on his plan. This was what he had prepared for. He dashed back inside and changed into his camouflage gear, grabbed his bugout bag, and then sprinted to his truck. He drove through his neighborhood and reached the main road. His shelter and plans were to the left. Kristin and the unknown were to the right. The whites of Paul’s knuckles flared as he gripped the steering wheel. Now was not the time to waffle. He turned left and hit the accelerator.
Paul gritted his teeth and raced down the street. Keep going. Keep going. He urged himself on. Almost involuntarily, his foot slammed on the brakes. Paul couldn’t do it. He’d planned for the worst all his life, and while he sat alone with the engine idling, he had to admit the truth. He’d lived all his life in fear.
Paul yanked the wheel and turned around toward Durham.

2023.05.29 00:28 Skarlit-Sage There was a strange post on my reddit account, I don’t recall posting it.

I’m not an extraordinary individual. Not to my knowledge at least. However, there have been many anomalous things that have happened to me throughout my life. Some of these incidents were harmless while others were downright haunting. Either way, all these incidents were well beyond simply being “out of the ordinary.”
The most recent of these incidents involve my reddit account. Specifically, a post that I don’t ever remember posting. I don’t have any medical or family history of memory-related disorders. I have never shown any signs of such memory disorders, nor do I have any predisposition to them. I also do not partake in injecting any drugs including alcohol or anything else that could cause me to forget certain events. Therefore, I would’ve remembered originally posting the following post and yet I don’t. The original post was titled, “A former work partner sent me a strange email last night, now I fear for my safety.”
I discovered this post this morning after vomiting for the first time in years. However, the vomit wasn’t what scared me. The fact that it was partly black. Closing the lid of the toilet after vomiting in it, I noticed something on the underside of my left forearm. “Subject Number 9: Attempt number 1; Result: Conversion Rejected; minimal to no physical alteration; failure” where the words printed on my arm. That was the final straw and that’s why I’ve decided to repost the original post rather than simply deleting it.
-Original Post-
It happened last night around 11:30pm. I was getting ready to go to bed when I heard a notification sound from my laptop. It was an email titled, "If you get this email, you’ve been selected for a true opportunity. Don’t resist it!" and attached to it, was a Word Document. It was from an ex-coworker whose real name I won't use (I'll be using the name Dave as a replacement). Not wanting to stay up for what I thought was an advertisement or promotion of some kind, I simply saved the attachment after verifying the email's origin.
I then went to bed before being woken up around 3:00 at night to a loud thumping sound and my laptop being turned on seemingly by itself. Upon opening the laptop, I saw that it was opened to the word document while a page to reddit had been open. After reading the Word Document in its entirety, I was dumbfounded. It wasn’t an advertisement; it was a warning. At first, I would’ve assumed it was just a dumb, ridiculous prank. However, following events made me convinced that’s not the case.
I tried to delete the word document and close reddit with no success and laptop will only pull up reddit, email, and Microsoft Word. I then tried to turn off my computer, but it only gave an error sound in response. Worse yet, my phone won’t even turn on so calling for help via my phone isn’t an option. It’s definitely some sort of virus. Furthermore, in the process of trying to leave my apartment on the fifth floor, the door wouldn’t unlock, and the peep hole was obstructed. Following this, I tried to scream for help, but nothing happened. This has only made me fearful and desperate. That's why I've decided to post the document I received here so I can maybe appease whatever virus this is.
To give context, I met Dave when we were both hired in the same group. Long story short, the job simply wasn't for us, and we were both let go the same day right before the end of our job's probationary period. After that, I went to work for a warehouse job to stay paying for the bills. I'll admit it's not the best job, but I won't complain because it pays enough for me to afford my monthly expenses. However, that didn't stop me from being jealous of Dave once I had learned that he had found work in an unnamed experimental treatment facility.
I live in an area on the southeast coast of North America that's known for constant innovation. Dave on the other hand, lived 20 minutes away from me. That's partially why it wasn't so hard for both of us to find replacement jobs. However, it didn't explain his luck as I never took him as the kind of guy to work in the field of Biology and Gene Therapy. He seemed more of a mechanic than a scientist. Regardless, I was happy for him and moved on with my typical life.
That was all about 2 months ago.
The document that was attached to the email was a letter. Any details such as the name of the CEO or the company Dave worked for have been removed. This was the message I saw when I read the document.
-Message Starts-
[My Name], you’re one of the people I sent this to. You need to read everything that is in this document very carefully, word for word and then post this to a site that it is or will be pulled up on your device. I’ve installed a virus on your computer that will only be nullified once this document has been posted onto a specific internet page designated as “Safe to post” by the virus’ code. I’ve done this to ensure that the truth gets out there not to harm you. I’m sorry it had to be this way.
However, I shall give you some context first.
It all started after I didn't make my previous job's probationary period. I had moved to the local area just for that job. So, when I didn’t make the cut, I originally was planning on moving back to my home state. However, that soon changed as two nights before I was going to begin the move. I had gotten a letter from [Removed] Inc. It was a job offer.
"Hello [Removed], we've heard about your recent and unfortunate separation from [Removed]. We would like to extend a job offer after reviewing your skills and experience as we’ve determined that you'd be a better fit here with us and your contributions valued. Your job would be relatively simple, safe, and rewarding. You will be trained, costs covered by us. Should you choose to stay, you’ll enjoy our amazing benefits including, but not limited to, full insurance coverage, competitive pay, and 152 hours of PTO! All we ask is that you're willing and able to work 12-hour shifts, lift more than 50lbs, comply with our reasonable NDAs and do the job with quality and safety in mind. Should this offer pique your interest, don't hesitate to call us or email us!
Sincerely, [Removed].”
“Today’s biological questions are tomorrow’s biological achievements here at [Removed].”
I must've read it twice before deeming it as "too good to be true" However, the truth is, I was desperate. Desperate enough to take the time and reach out to the company. The fact is, I didn't want to go back to my home state. If I had a chance to stay here, why not try and see if the job is genuine. “The worst thing that can happen is I get my time wasted” I thought.
I called the CEO the next day and to my surprise, long story short, it was successful! I was hired! Not only that but the job's hourly wage was $10 more than my previous job and I only had to work 3 days a week! I was told to come in the next available shift for training.
I eagerly began my first two weeks here normal enough. It was mostly training videos relating to our job procedure, receiving hands-on training for simple tasks, and meeting my coworkers. On the first day, I noticed that all the coworkers barely ever talked. I chalked it all up as they simply being standoffish to me, the new hire. I figured they needed to warm up to me.
After the first 2 weeks were done, I had a good idea of what I'd be doing. I would be experimenting on human and wild animal tissue as well as live animals. This was to study the effects of mutating and altering certain genetic codes. I know the last part might seem unethical, but it was to discover cures for diseases using gene therapy. I wasn’t hurting animals; I was helping them. However, the job still began to feel wrong.
It started with me meeting the CEO. Immediately I noticed something was different about her. Specifically, the way she looked for a CEO. She towered above me at almost seven feet in height and her skin was insanely pale. Her hair was jet-black as was the color of her eye’s irises and the shape of her upturned eyes made her gaze very intimidating as well. She looked young, perhaps 25 at the oldest. Furthermore, the way she dressed; she wore a black and grey camo military-style uniform didn’t help. There was what looked to be the patch of a flag or symbol on her left shoulder, but it wasn’t that of any nation or group I recognized. The symbol/flag in question was a red-letter X in the middle of a red outline of an eye with a black background. Her voice was also very off.
After meeting her, I was then made to sign several NDAs and other contractual documents. The documents I was signing seemed standard but something in me felt wrong with it. After signing the NDAs, I was then introduced to Arin, the person I'd be shadowing. Everything went downhill from there. Immediately, within 5 minutes of meeting him, Arin began to give me a list of ominous, strange suggestions that sounded more like warnings.
  1. If you hear the CEO seemingly talking to herself behind a locked door with the hallway lights flickering outside, walk away. She’s talking to the voice. Whatever they are talking about is none of your business and you want to keep it that way.
  2. If you are working by yourself and the lights turn off. Don't move. You will hear a voice, cooperate with it, answer any questions it has and do what it says. I don't want to have to clean up after another, "unfortunate work accident."
  3. Though this is unlikely, if the CEO tells you to meet them in their room. Do not keep them waiting. She doesn't like it when you're late because it is likely demanding your presence.
  4. If you have questions about what exactly we do, don't ask. Don't try to tell anyone outside of this facility the nature of our work and its end goal should you find out. It's not us that will come for you, it's the voice.
  5. If you happen to see the figure that the voice belongs to, it has respect for you. Keep it that way but avoid eye contact with it.
  6. Do not refer to the voice as the CEO or a mental illness. Even if that’s what it seems like, I promise you It not that. You treat it with the utmost respect and legitimacy even when it's not around.
  7. None of these suggestions I’ve given you are a "joke" of any kind. Take it seriously.
I didn't say anything, but I was more than confused. I could tell by his face that he was intent on convincing me. In fact, he had the most serious look I had ever seen on anyone’s face. He then said, "I have your back but don't get yourself in trouble. Don't mention what I've told you at lunch either. Everyone learns in their third week. Now, you know what they say about Rome? When in Rome, do as the romans do yeah? Well, you're in Rome so do as we do. Oh, and I'll say this one final time, nothing I've told you is to be talked about outside of the workplace. Don't think about it too hard though. Just don't forget either." My heart began to race slightly after hearing this as I struggled to go about the work routine of isolating and studying DNA strands, reorganizing documents, Injecting certain labelled syringes into various lab animals, etc.
The next 4 days went roughly the same as I got into the routine of things. I got better at my tasks and was even allowed to work alone by the end of the week. All the other coworkers at lunch would say things like, "I went to go work at my station but the door to the room was locked, I then heard the CEO talking on the other end." or "The lights went out at my station yesterday, IT didn't say anything. The lights came on after 2 minutes. IT must've been observing." As these things were said, they exchanged knowing looks with no sign of any joking going on. At this point I was beginning to be convinced that the CEO was insane just by that alone.
The following 4 weeks were almost completely normal. There was no mention of "The Voice" except towards the end of my 4th week when Arin said, "IT must be taking a break or a vacation if it does that sort of thing." before one of our coworkers apparently got a little too clever and said, "IT might just decide to screw off for once." Everyone then stopped to look at him with stern expressions and no one even smiled. No one else said anything about the voice for the rest of lunch that day. The whole event made me nervous even more.
Midway through my 5th week, I had my first encounter with the voice while working the last hour of my shift. I was in a level A biohazard suit and about to mix two separate solutions in a petri dish based on instructions projected on my station's computer screen. One was dark red and labelled, "Human Blood; O- Type" and the other was black and simply labelled, "Black Blood." I was just about to mix them when the all the lights, including the light from my computer monitor cut out. Then, I heard a low-pitched, inhuman voice speak, "So interesting.” It spoke before continuing, “Tomorrow you will be made to do something dangerous but very important. In fact, that's why we brought you here. You are expendable due to your lack of prior experience and knowledge. However, I know you need the money and if you come in tomorrow, I’ll pay you 100k after you complete the task.”
The voice was beyond haunting because of how abnormal it sounded. It was like 3 people speaking at once. One voice was a deep, yet feminine, prominent, and loud voice while the two sounded like a man’s faint whispers echoing the same words. The voice then continued to my dismay, “Now, you were about to mix the two agents. Remember to destroy the petri dish after 3 minutes.” I didn't even ask how it knew to respond with that. I just stood there drenched in sweat and shaking, horrified at the whole experience. Then I thought back to the rules I was told on day seven. There was no doubt in my mind that this place was insane!
The voice then left without a trace as the lights came back on. I then completed the task according to instructions given. I watched as the Human Blood mixed with the Black substance. The entire petri dish became black within 1 minute before reverting to blood. When analyzing the liquid under a microscope, I saw that the cells had their entire genetic code rewritten. There were also what appeared to be stem cell like cell in the blood. They were black and moved through the other cells mutating any that hadn’t been converted. I immediately stepped away from the microscope as I gasped and then disposed of the mutagenic waste by placing it in the incinerator. The day then ended not long after that. I was reluctant to come back but the money promised was undeniable.
When I got to my assigned station at the basement level of the facility the next day, I was greeted by the CEO again who told me we’d be working on a "willing test subject" for an experiment. She also told me that I and my immediate coworkers were the only employees on site except for a few executives that would also be present. I was still shaken up from the previous day’s experience and the weirdness of that current day. However, I was then fully convinced with the promise of an additional 100k being deposited into my account immediately after successfully completing my task. I would've turned back had I known what would happen less than 30 minutes later.
I was escorted by the CEO to an all-steel room except for a panel of heavily reinforced, thick observation glass and door that looked like it belonged in Fort Knox. In the middle of the room lies a medical bed with a tube full of black fluid beside it. Several of my coworkers then stepped in the room with me as they saw my confusion. The door then closed behind them. Then Arin spoke, “So I guess the CEO didn’t tell you. Listen, there’s a reason why our team is the only one here today. It to put you in that bed.” I shouted in protest, “What! No! I don’t agree with this! Please, you can’t do this to me! This is illegal! Stop it!” Arin then replied with the last words I heard him speak, “Sorry buddy, this is why we brought you here. No one’s going to find out! We are all getting 100k individually to do this. You’re not the only one who needs money right now. Now let’s just make this easy for everyone. Get on there!” I then replied with, “Fuck you! I kill all of you!” as they wrestled me to bed with ease. They then cuffed my feet and hands to the bed with metallic restraints. The last thing I remember is a cloth being put over my nose as a strong scent filled my nostrils.
The next thing I remember was my eyes being covered by my hands as cried. I then pulled my hands away to see that they had become elongated, and my fingers had become claw-like. I then looked down at my mutated, blood-soaked body in horror. All around me was death and bodily destruction. I didn’t recognize a single body. The bed, equipment, walls, and floor were painted with blood and littered with human tissue. I immediately froze for a second time before retching. As a towered above the destruction, I realized I was significantly taller than I remembered. Then I looked ahead of me and saw that the tube with the black fluid was empty. “…No” Was the only word I could get out. That was when I noticed that my voice was altered. I sounded like the voice except prominent voice was a demonic version of my original voice and the faint whispering voices that came from my throat afterwards were feminine. Then I heard The Voice call out to me from the direction of the door behind me. I turned and saw the CEO. “It’s okay child, you’re mine now.” Were the words she spoke to me… and they will be the words she speaks to you.
Dear viewer, I am known by many names. One of them is Goddess Cerridwen. I know all of this is a lot to take in but soon it will all make sense. You were meant to worship me and soon you will as well as everyone else revieing “An email supposedly from [Dave’s real name]”. Your device is being tracked as of the time the Virus is installed onto it. I’m on my way to take you. You shall spread the word. It will do you no good, but it will make my name known furthermore so they may worship me.
-Message ends-
After I first got done reading this, I thought it was some ridiculous joke but now I no longer feel that way as the lights have begun to flicker and I’m beginning to hear whispering sounds from my closet. I’m going to try one more thing to escape.
I thought of an idea to get out of this situation and that was to start a fire in my kitchen to trip the fire alarm and get help. However, as I went over to the stove the power shut out and all the light from the outside streetlights seemed to dim unnaturally until no light came through. The only thing illuminating my entire apartment was my now laptop with its now eerie blue glow lighting up the dark world around me.
I decided to do the only thing I could think of, post the document on reddit. However, just as I was about to do this, I heard what sounded like three demonic voices speaking at once coming from behind me. Then I lost all hope of escape as the horror of reality sunk in and froze my body still as Goddess Cerridwen, the CEO, spoke to me, “Once you read the document, I simply manifested myself near your device’s location. That’s how I’ll get the first of the other ones too. You’re mine now. Go on, post it.”
-End of Original Post-
As I’m reposting this on here, there’ve been several local reports of people in my area going missing with no trace. “The first 10 of the missing people had received an email from [Dave’s real name]. However, now people are going missing without having received any previous let-” I turned off the TV after hearing that. The local news had also been saying that some other people had been waking up with words stamped on their arms. Some of these people that had reported these words on their forearms have since gone missing again. It's likely that whatever this “Goddess Cerridwen” is, it is responsible for the disappearances in my area. Furthermore, it's coming for me now and I know this for a fact. I say this because no light is coming through my apartment despite it still being mid-day and the lights of my apartment… have begun to flicker rapidly.

2023.05.28 23:55 Bateman_Not_Batman #how to get ahead in ai.dvertising [SP]

The Future is Officially Canceled.
Dee had read articles like this before. He couldn’t remember if the future had ever been officially canceled. But it had been canceled. Unofficially, perhaps. Hence the need to do it officially.
He skimmed the first few paragraphs …the slow cancellation of the future… …pop culture is eating itself… …imitators are imitating an imitation… The ‘slow cancellation’ theory was first flung around in the early twenty first century, on the hypothesis that if you played 1970s music to someone in the 1950s, it would blow their freaking mind. And if you played music from the 1990s to someone in the 1970s, their mind would be equally blown. But if you played music from the ‘10s to someone in the 1990s it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch. In fact, that person may even think they had heard some of it before. The same thing with music from the ‘30s to someone in the ‘10s or music from now to someone in the ‘30s. That person might conceivably think they were even listening to music from a previous decade. Pop culture had referenced itself so many times over, it was now just a copy of a copy of a copy. Degrading every time.
Dee looked down at the article's credit, Dennis Bagley, Editorial AI Operator. He knew it, AI. No wonder it read so familiar. He looked up at the various awards on his top shelf. Dee knew he was different. Better. His AI operating skills were the thing of accolades. The thing of applause. Just last week he and his AI processor picked up Gold in Effectology for their Just Poo It campaign for Charmin. And Silver in Originology for their The Ketchup In The Rye commercial for Pepsi-Heinz, about a young guy who gets kicked out of school and stays out all night trying to find a bottle of ketchup. He looked down at his processor and beamed. Its glowing red light beamed back at him.
They didn’t just stumble into that kind of effectiveness. Campaigns didn’t even get greenlit unless they scored ninety or above on the Effectology meter. He and his AI were usually hitting ninety twos or ninety threes, even a ninety five for Here’s To The Lazy Ones for Caspar mattresses. That campaign killed.
But Dee held himself to that higher calling, Originology. The metrics of original ideas. Sure, the AI did most of the work but Dee was able to tweak his processor to go way beyond the requisite twenty five percent Originology score. Together they were nailing figures in the forties, sometimes even peaking into the fifties. Scores that were head and shoulders above the rest of the department.
That’s how he could afford the sweet ‘18 Jordans Reissues on his feet. He curled his luxe Loewe headphone cable through his fingers and wrapped it around his neck like a scarf. He scoffed at a time when people didn’t think they needed a headphone cable. And imagined having nothing to twirl while listening to reinterpreted rock, nothing to wind around his fingers while he fed the processor. How many headphones must have been lost forever, just because they weren’t plugged in? Like everything else in pop culture, what went around came around, and, relatively recently, headphone cables had come back hard as the status symbol. Today, you didn’t just have to have a cable to be considered cool, you had to have the cable. It had to be thick as a rope, plated with rare metals, and covered in a fancy leather sheath from a chic brand like Gucci or Loewe.
Dee beamed as he thought of all the cool historical cultural knowledge he had amassed. Not just advertising history like the dweebs in the cubicles around him, but film history, fashion history, art history, music history. If it happened in culture, he knew about it. And he used it. That’s how he scored so high on the Originology meter. It made him feel almost like a real writer. Though he would never say that out loud. He imagined being like the old timers, upstairs. The un.ai.ded human writers, that clients would pay a serious premium for. Then he wouldn’t have to work on ketchup and toilet roll. He could have a crack at the big dogs, like Googlesoft, United American Airlines or DoritosLocosTacoBell. For now though, he’d have to stick with clients more becoming of his position. This morning’s task was to create a campaign for Pepsi-Crest. A toothpaste. Not super interesting. But he knew how to spice it up. Instead of letting his AI go back through decades of toothpaste ads just to pump out tired old crap like the It Cleans Your Face While it Cleans Your Teeth campaign that Mike Bey pitched last week, Dee mixed in a little fast food inspo from one of his favorite eras and found himself at the highly original and equally effective Where’s the Teeth? campaign. He was stunned by his own brilliance. He patted his processor and imagined it congratulating him back, then he programmed it to write an epic fifteen second anthem film and a suite of six second pre-roll spots, then sent it off to the CG department to render in time to air that night. Dee’s colleagues often asked him how he and his processor were so good at what they did. How their campaigns always scored so highly in both Effectology and Originology. They all used the same machine learning. It’s what the agency sold itself on. Never wanting to sound aloof; even though he was, or like he was tooting his own horn; even though he often did, he would merely say, “I like to pepper a bit of non advertising data in there. A little hint of me.” It was enough to provoke gasps and even make his colleagues take a step back or two, they had all been programmed to do just one task, feed the machine with advertising data. They couldn’t fathom diverging. “The AI should be enough,” was the general understanding. “The machine has better knowledge of advertising history than we do,” and “knows the ins and outs of Effectology better than we ever could.” It’s even been “scientifically programmed to exceed all expectation of Originology.” Dee couldn’t be swayed by any of the standard reactions. He would just smile, and casually amble off. Knowing full well he was beating the machine. He was a rebel in his own right. That afternoon, his section boss leaned over his cubicle. “Hullo Tara.” “Keep it formal please, colleague,” she scolded, “call me Antino. What do you look so ruddy chuffed about anyway?” “I just came up with a brilliant campaign for a very dull toothpaste. You’ll see it on The Comedy Central Reruns Channel tonight.” “Yes, well, an upstairs project is running behind and they’re calling on us down here to pull together some inspo decks, help jostle something loose in those tired old brains.” “Wouldn’t that make them not human-made? What are their clients paying all that money for?” “Loopholes, colleague, loopholes. As long as one of them humans writes the final line, it doesn’t matter how much AI they used to get there. “ “I could do that. I could do better than that. Did I tell you about my toothpaste campaign?” “Yes you did. Twice now. Must be good.” “It is.” “Well, here’s your chance for a peek into the real writer life. I’m deprioritizing your regular workload and prioritizing this inspo creation.” “Yeahhh!” Dee punched the air and freeze framed like he saw in an old movie. “The brief is for Fiat Maserati Jeep Dodge RAM. It’s a car. The Fiat Maserati Jeep Dodge RAM Unica. Like a fancy off-roader, you know what I mean? They wanna sell it to people in cities who don’t drive. More of a status symbol, you know what I mean? Like park it in front of your house so people will know you could go off-roading if you wanted to. Audience archetype is Moms. You getting this?” Dee finally broke his freeze frame but his mind was already whirring. “Yeah, I got it.” “Alright then. Bon chance.” Dee jumped into action, flipped up his AI processor’s screen and started cross referencing old Land Rover ads with The Rock movies, some Nora Ephron classics, Michelle Rodriguez’s character from all twenty eight Fast & Furious movies; even the fully CGI’d ones, the scene from Mrs Doubtfire when she’s playing the broomstick like a guitar, some Bikini Kill records, a memory of his own Mom making him wait in the car while she went shopping at Bergdorfs, a bunch of cool off-roading stuff from Top Gear and a painting of a car he’d always loved by Robert Bechtle. The machine spat out fifteen possible campaign inspo starters and Dee ran-walked them to the inspo courier in the office atrium. Before the day ended, a synthetic orchestra sounded through the building, \Pah pahhh, pah pa pah pa pah pahhh** and the employees were called into the atrium. Office meeting. As Dee strolled in, he caught the rare sight of the last few human copywriters lined up around the balcony above them. They applauded the downstairs employees, theatrically, motioning with their claps as they walked in and took seats, stood awkwardly or otherwise congregated.
There was a dramatic hush before one of the last true human copywriters finally spoke. “Great inspo. Thanks.” Wow. Each word, each letter, worth its weight in gold. That's probably why they used so few, thought Dee. “Yeah, really really good stuff.” Said another. “AI did this?” Said a third as she held the sheets of inspo out. “Some of the best inspo I’ve ever seen in all of my career.” Coughed the oldest and most regal sounding.
Dee squinted and peered up at them. Was that his inspo deck they were flashing around? Was this whole elaborate ceremony all to celebrate his AI operating? He didn’t know whether to be chuffed or anxious. Did they know he was cheating the system? Did they care? These are some of the last true human copywriters in history. They have, and are encouraged to have, the unique thought. Their work isn’t judged on how similar-without-being-exactly-the-same it is to existing campaigns. It’s judged on how different, how breakthrough, how stand out it is.
“It was me!” Dee blurted out. Quite uncharacteristically. He was usually so cool with the compliments. So coy with the recognition. His whole angle required it.
The other AI operators standing around him took their requisite step back, though this time it was less in awe, more in disgust. The air in the room stiffened. AI had ruled his department, and most of the industry, for so long that people didn’t speak up anymore. They just quietly fed the machine. And the machine took all the glory. Dee felt instant ostracism from the colleagues he had worked alongside for most of his career. He immediately questioned his outburst and retracted his ownership claim, knowing that his inspo deck would have been one of many.
“Some of it, at least. My AI, I mean. Processor.” He said. Sheepish this time. Back in his place.
The last few human copywriters smiled, nodded, bowed, gave final congratulations to all from high up on their balcony and then shuffled away in single file. All but one, Sir Coughing-Most-Regal. He slowly made his way down the grand staircase, into the atrium. A man leaving behind his usual pomp and circumstance, bringing his rare ability of unique thought into a crowd of imitation suppliers. As he reached the bottom step, he lost all of his royal air and seemed suddenly so vulnerable, walking among the regular folk. Most of Dee’s colleagues had already left, gone back to their metal masters, but Dee stayed. He knew this old man was coming to see him. He thought he might be in for a dressing down but he hoped it would be the opposite. He manifested that this titan of singular thought, the rare, unique idea, was coming to congratulate him.
“Freedkin.” The old man shoved out his hand. “Pleasure.” Dee shook it. “You say you programmed this inspo deck, yes?” He flapped the pages around. “Yes.” “Ruddy good work, let me tell you.” “Thank you.” “In all my years, since this artificial thinking thing came in, I’ve never read anything so good. Inspired me all over. I’ve been positively bursting with ideas since.” “Thank… you.” “AI wrote this you say?” “Yes.” “Ruddy good for AI. Never read anything so ruddy good. And you processed it?” “Yes.” “What’s your name son?” “Dee.” “Dee what?” “Palmer.” “Pleasure to meet you, Palmer. How much did you… influence it, the AI?” “How do you mean, sir?” “Call me Freedkin.” “How do you mean, Freedkin?” “I mean… how much of it is yours and how much is the machine’s?” Dee didn’t answer. He was looking for the angle. This old man surely didn’t value what AI does. He’s one of the last bastions of actual human creation. What was he getting at? Freedkin reoriented his question. “Mostly the machine or mostly you?” Dee thought he might have a kindred spirit here, in front of him, for the first time. He was going to take a risk. Recognizing a willingness to open up, Freedkin leaned in and spoke quietly. “Did you write this inspo or did the machine?” “I wrote it.” Dee postured. “All.” “Thought so. Good job. Our secret.” Freedkin winked. “Jolly good.” The next day, as he fed his AI little snippets of unexpected data, Dee noticed a hush come over his floor. The usual keyboard click, clack and grumble of inter-colleague banter were dead silent. All that was left was the processors’ harmonic hum. He lifted himself from his expensive ergonomic office chair and peered over his cubicle wall, spying across the sea of operators that made up the AI.ded Creativity department. A hunched figure at the opposite end of the bullpen sauntered from operator to operator, swilling a cup of coffee, looking in at each workstation. Giving a “hello” here, a nod there, even the odd salute. It was Freedkin. A real writer. Down here with the machine feeders. The other operators seemed afraid to go near him. Worried they might infect him with their inability. Dee had never seen a real writer in the operators’ bullpen. Freedkin, already old by industry standards, looked positively ancient in these surroundings. A sepia photograph in a technicolor world. Dee watched him, wondering if he should call out. He felt bound by social etiquette to not foist another outburst onto his peers. So he just watched, for a number of minutes, until Freedkin was close enough that his old eyes could make out Dee’s visage.
“Palmer!” Bingo. The two sat in Dee’s cubicle. Freedkin in the expensive office chair, as was fitting, and Dee on the wooden footstool. “For a short time we all worked from home. At the start of my career. For a short time.” “Everyone?” “Most. Not everyone, I suppose. But it was the thing to do. Was deemed more productive. Until it wasn’t. Then when this thing became the norm,” he tapped on Dee’s tiny AI processor, its red light glowed, “there was a sort of an office renaissance. I remember the bigwigs back then didn’t really want us using AI for ideas. Like it was giving in to the machine. We slowly got called back to the agency so they could keep an eye on our output. Keep it human, I suppose. That’s when the separation happened. In the end, the agency had to start using artificial thinking to keep up with demand. What are you lot churning out these days? Three campaigns a day? Four? We used to get a whole week to come up with one idea. After a while, of course, it got squeezed down to a couple of days. To the point where we needed the machine to keep up. Not long after, the bigwigs realized they could actually charge more off of the ‘human’ written stuff. Anyway, enough of the history lesson, what.” “It’s very interesting.” “Yes well, what I really came down here for,” Freedkin paused and looked around, “was some of that… good… inspo.” “I hear ya.” Dee poised his fingers over his keyboard and looked into the air like he was about to write something un.ai.ded, cocksure in his posture. “What’s this one about then?” “Watches. For Googlesoft. ‘Time,’ I was thinking, means so much, yet so little. Where does it all go? You know? How do we make more of it? Watches are time machines. See?” Dee’s posture sank. He thought of all that, by himself? No machine? He suddenly felt very ineffective. Unoriginal. He saw only the red glow from his little AI processor, staring back at him. Taking all the credit. He imagined it laughing with his colleagues in a bar while he sat at the other end of the table, ignored. He imagined it accepting awards by itself. He felt weak. He felt useless without it. It just glowed. “It kind of flows better… when I’m alone.” Dee nervously mumbled. “Right. Don’t say another word. Right you are. ‘Time.’ Remember. Where does it all go? Ok, I go. Ta-ta for now.
Dee looked down at his processor, apologetically. He quietly admonished himself before it until he felt forgiven. Then he typed in a weak initial prompt, all he could muster, write an advertising campaign about time.
The AI spat back a perfectly crafted campaign idea, line and film execution almost faster than Dee hit enter. The Best Things Come To Bros Who Wait. Dee immediately recognized it as a Guinness Surfers imitation. Tick followed tock followed tick followed tock. Its Effectology score clocked in well into the nineties. But its Originology score barely scraped by, just making it into ‘passable.’ Dee silently sneered at his surrounding coworkers. Any one of them would submit this as is and call it a day. It’d be rendered in minutes, deals made with celebrities’ CG likenesses under the hour, a revered AI voiceover and stunning synthetic music that would leave audiences lining up for these passively useful timepieces. But that wasn’t enough for Dee. That’s why he was who he was, goddamnit. Why Freedkin came to him. Him! Not Buton or Deytoro or Heckering. Him!
He added more detail to his prompt. Meaning of time. How to get time back. Time Machine. Back in time. Michael J Fox. Einstein (dog). Time Bandits. Timecop. Van Damme. Kyle Reece. Time displacement. Uhhh huhhh this felt good again. This was working. Dee and his processor were back in sync. As though they were one. Of course, as far as Freedkin knew, they were one. As Dee typed away, he imagined him and his AI coming together. Two heads. Better than one. He lost himself in his prompting and pictured his processor sitting on his shoulder, a second head, right there, next to his own. A tiny, metal appendage. Sleek, gray, with its glowing red light. And, for some reason, it was growing a little mustache. Dee and the mustached machine were completely lost in their work over the next few days. They hardly wrote any of their own campaigns. It was all inspo, inspo, inspo for Freedkin. The good stuff though, Viking Space Cruises, 1900 Tequila, Acne Studios. Each time, Dee and his processor were pretty much writing the entire thing. Freedkin hardly needed to change them at all. Just put his old world tone all over it. Add all of his extra words and ‘personality.’ Dee’s two heads were coming up with the best campaigns in the agency. And no one knew it. Except Freedkin. By now, his second head felt almost as big as his first. He could see it in his periphery. When he looked to the left, it looked back at him. It smiled sometimes. And that little freaking mustache was starting to freak Dee out. That night, Freedkin invited Dee for a couple of drinks with the other real human writers at the fanciest DoritosLocosTacoBell on the Westside. They didn’t even have to wait in line. Dee marveled at the size of the place, the expansiveness. It was packed. They were led through by the greeter to a private table at the back with a leather rope around it. He sat on the edge of the booth as the others ordered various flavors of Gatorade-aritas. When it got to Dee, he said he would have the same as Freedkin, which turned out to be a Frost Glacier Cherry-arita, the classiest -arita of all.
The writers’ conversation was mesmerizing. Every word that came out of their mouths was a unique thought. An opinion. A point of view. Dee tried to join in by recounting the narrative of various movies he had seen. The more obscure the better, attempting to interact at their level. While telling the story of Mick Jackson’s Threads to Bigelo, he could feel her searching for a point of view or an opinion in what he was saying, but he couldn’t stir one. If only he had his processor right now. Its red light glowed comfortingly in his mind. He missed it. Slowly, the other writers left. Dee couldn’t help but think he had something to do with it. He was feeling so inadequate by the time everyone but Freedkin had gone that he just sat quietly and half-smiled at him. Both of them were five or six Gatorade-aritas deep, slumped in their private booth. “Do you like what you do?” Asked Freedkin. “I love it.” “Do you really?” “I don’t know.” “I hate what I do. But I’m good at it. Do you want to know the secret, Palmer? The secret to what we do?” Dee couldn’t do anything but smile a little bigger to communicate his response. Freedkin paused for dramatic effect. “If you love advertising, you shouldn’t work in advertising.” Did Dee love advertising? He didn’t even know. He knew he knew advertising. “You think your audience loves advertising? You think they want to see your tribute to that Googlesoft spot that was an imitation of an Apple spot that was inspired by a Brett Morgen film? No! They just want to see the Brett Morgen film! They don’t want to see your thing at all!” Dee slumped further down. “But if you’re lucky,” Freedkin continued, “if you’re really lucky, and you show them something they’ve never seen before, because you hate advertising too and you just wanted to make something that made you feel something, if they feel that same feeling, you’ve got gold. But you can only get to gold by summoning all of your experiences outside of advertising. You can’t just try to make the Nike of pimple commercials. You have to make the Palmer of pimple commercials. Do you see? That’s the problem with your AI. Your machine.”
The red light flashed again in Dee’s mind. Awakened by Freedkin’s heresy.
“The best AI will ever do is just show you a better version of something you’ve seen before. They call that effective? The numbers can say whatever they want them to, all they’re really doing is pasting wallpaper on top of wallpaper on top of wallpaper. Until eventually the audience ignores it completely. But you’re different Palmer. You and I are different. Different is what sells. I had a word with Simmons up on six. She’s agreed to give you a trial period on the human floor. At my behest. Don’t worry, I didn’t tell her you were already thinking for yourself. I just told her you had the potential to. You start tomorrow. Trial period. Tonight was about the other humans meeting you. I can’t tell you that they’re not skeptical. But they’re open to it. For me. What do you think?” Dee was nervous. He got off the elevator at the operators’ bullpen without even thinking about it. He walked all the way to the atrium and up the grand staircase to the human writers’ floor, instead of getting back on the elevator. He took each step steadily, taking it all in. He felt like a tourist. Like he was borrowing an identity. He imagined he was a young Freedkin and tried to put a confident stride in his step. It didn’t work. He put his hand in his pocket and felt for his AI processor. His second head. Mustached. He couldn’t turn it on because, as everyone knew, AI wasn’t allowed upstairs, in case the agency got audited. The cost consultants would be all over a human writing department that used artificial ideation. They’d be shut down. At the very least, they would lose their Un.AI.ded AI.dvertising license. The only reason for charging such a premium. Dee ran his hand along the balcony rail. He’d only ever seen it from downstairs, from the non-human thinkers’ floor. He walked from the balcony to the human writer’s work area. It was the exact opposite of what he was used to. No sea of cubicles. No click clack. No mechanized productivity. No hum. Just couches, writing desks and quiet.
“Morning.” Whistled Freedkin. “How are we?” “We?” “You.” “Wish I hadn’t drunk so much.” “Ohh, I know. Think of it as an initiation. Nothing wrong with it. Takes your mind off the job. Stops you from thinking for a minute. You need that after everything you’ve been pumping out. All that gold, that is.” “Right.” “Right. Well. Set yourself up wherever you like. First brief is for Coca-Cola. A new water! The freshest water they’ve ever sold, so they say. Tap Clear” Dee wandered over to a small writing desk and put his touchscreen down. He unraveled his headphone cable and felt for his processor in his pocket. When he found it, he rubbed it like a lamp, wishing for a genie. A couple of human writers who’d been deep in concentration when he first walked in, had been disturbed by his arrival. He didn’t recognize them from last night. They glared at him as he set himself up. He smiled in their general direction. They continued to glare. “Big Jim.” Whispered Freedkin. “Him and his team have been here three days straight, on a pitch. Don’t worry about them. They’re just under tremendous stress. This human work really takes it out of you, you know? ” Dee turned and sat with his back to them. He powered up his touchscreen and put his headphones on, draping his Loewe headphone cable around his neck and shoulders. He hovered his fingers over his keyboard, expecting ideas to come. Nothing. He skimmed the brief. Still nothing. He read the brief. Not a thing. A few of the other writers strolled in. Dee watched them find a workspace, sit down, start writing. One of them even used a pen! Dee loved this whole lifestyle. Turn up for work whenever, spout genius, have lunch, sell some billion dollar ideas, have a cocktail. The thought of it all spurred him on. He hovered his fingers over his keyboard again and braced himself for the idea flow. Nothing came. Nothing. All morning. His mind was blank. It felt like it was getting blanker. He couldn’t believe it. Even half thoughts were swimming away from him. Impossible to catch. Even just individual words. Gone. By the afternoon Dee was starting to freak out. He felt like an imposter. “Freedkin,” he hissed, “I can’t think. I can’t come up with anything.” “It takes time, my boy. Days. I told you, before we used to even have weeks…” “But my brain’s not working at all. It won’t… generate… anything.” “Relax your brain. Relax yourself.” “But Freedkin… Freedkin,” he hissed again, “I didn’t write any of that stuff. It was AI. All of it. No… I mean… I helped… but it wasn’t all me.” “Ok… hold on… boy… be careful. That kind of talk will get you killed around here. Try and make it to the end of the day. Try just writing some things down. Some thoughts. Some words. And if you still feel the same tomorrow, I’ll let the brass know it wasn’t for you. No harm.” Dee’s eyes hardened. “Do you hear me, Palmer?” Dee rubbed his temples. “Listen, this affects both of us. Yes, you, but also me… for recommending you. I’ll be out… Think!” Freedkin distanced himself. Hoping it would quell the panic. Dee stared at nothing for as long as he could. An hour, at most. Just stared. No thoughts came. No words. A blank screen. So he slipped his hand in his pocket, held his AI processor warmly, and turned it on. Instantly, an alarm sounded. “What's going on here, Freedkin?” Skewered Big Jim. “Is this your kid? What’s the big idea? Is he working for the machines? What is he…trying to infiltrate us? I can’t have this. I’ve got a family. I can’t be out of a job.” “It’s just a misunderstanding, Jim. He’ll be leaving now.” “No he won’t. Get back here, kid.” Big Jim grabbed at Dee’s shirt. Dee squirmed and tried to push him away. Big Jim got a hand on his neck instead, as some of the other writers tried to grab his arms. Dee instinctively swung his fists around. He got one of the writers, Bigelo, square in the eye. She roared “He’s blinded me!” Big Jim picked him up by his neck. Dee choked. He grabbed his touchscreen and swung it. The edge caught Big Jim on the side of the head. Big Jim dropped him and screamed. Freedkin put a hand on Big Jim’s shoulder. Big Jim swung his fist around and slammed it into Freedkin’s nose. Dee tried to slip away but Big Jim, raging, grabbed his headphone cable and dragged him back, winding the cable around his neck to try and hold on to him with it. The other writers stepped back as Dee kicked around in a panic. He got one of the writers in the stomach and another in the back. The headphone cable slipped out of Big Jim’s hands. Dee reached out for anything he could grab onto. He found a desk leg and pulled himself away from the melee as the gang of writers got him by his feet. They pulled off his Jordans and he crawled away as fast as he could, out of the writers’ area and onto the balcony. The writers caught up with him. He swung the few punches he could muster. He cracked one writer on the cheekbone as another reached for his headphone cable, wrapping it around the balcony rail to stop him from getting even further away. Big Jim steamed in, bleeding from his head, and slammed into Dee, launching him into the air with his sheer force. Dee reached for the rail but it slipped under him as he toppled over into the open atrium, between the floors. He felt a snap as the headphone cable went taut around his neck. A colleague standing in the atrium shrieked. Dee kicked his legs and wriggled about, trying to slip out. He clawed his hands around the cable and tried to loosen it but it just got tighter and tighter. He looked up to see the human writers peering down. Not helping. He could feel his consciousness slipping away. He looked to his left to see his second head staring straight back at him. As he hung, he could feel the metal head growing, exponentially, until it popped off, hit the ground and shattered. Shiny gray liquid metal spilled all over the floor and splashed up the walls. Its red light glowing all over as the metal spread around the room. Once it had flooded the entire atrium it enveloped Dee’s mind. And he was gone. The agency left his body hanging there for two days. They blamed it on a lack of janitorial availability. Everything in the office was automated, and cutting down a dead body wasn’t something their sanitation robots had been programmed to do. But, deep down, everyone knew that it was a message. That they should stay in the roles they had been assigned. So they did. So they wouldn’t end up like Dee.

2023.05.28 22:54 kittycatblues Are Westin beds really the best? (Boston Seaport)

We'll be staying in Boston for two nights in July. I currently have Hampton Inn Seaport booked which is in the same building as a Homewood Suites. I am staying in a Homewood Suites this weekend (elsewhere) and one member of our party literally got no sleep the first night because of the hardness of the bed. He's used to a Sleep Number bed, so a lot softer. My relative in the area brought an air mattress to the hotel and he's now sleeping fine on that.
I'm rethinking our Boston booking, considering moving to Westin Seaport in Boston. They seem to only have Kings or doubles there so I would need two rooms, so it would be more expensive than the two queens room I have booked now. Are the Westin beds really "heavenly"? Any thoughts welcome.

Kika Lorace: Well, darling, I've got the acting chops to deliver the dramatic monologues and the diva attitude that Duchess Vivienne demands. You can't just rely on your loud personality to carry the role.

ManilaButterflyzzzXX: Well, I may not agree with your decision, but I will give my full support to Kika, I guess. I’ll just do whatever is left.

ChatPaul: Ladies, based on your performances in the "Royal Reunion" sitcom challenge and your stunning "Warhol's Wonderland" runway presentations, I have made some decisions.
Dee Pression, you are safe.
ManilaButterflyzzzXX, as King Fabulous, you brought the flamboyance and charisma to the stage. Your Campbell's Soup Can-inspired runway was a delightful nod to Warhol's pop art.
Kika Lorace, as Duchess Vivienne, your portrayal was conniving and captivating. You owned the stage with your performance and your avant-garde "Silver Liz" runway was a work of art.
Oshi Rellee Cayme Dat-Wei, your portrayal of Queen Divina was emotional and powerful. And your pop art comic strip-inspired runway was a showstopper.

Kika Lorace, condragulations, you are the winner of this challenge!

Oshi, Manila, you are safe to slay another day.
Gromette Mugler, your runway look was whimsical and fun, but your performance in the challenge lacked the necessary spark.
RuPaul, while your runway look paid homage to Warhol's self-portraits, your portrayal of Lady Gossipella was overshadowed by the other queens.
Lady Yomamalaid, your Prince Rocco had moments of comedic charm, but there were instances where you lost the character. Your Elvis Presley-inspired runway, however, showcased your attention to detail and style. You are safe.
That means Gromette Mugler, your rebellious Princess Aurora, and RuPaul, as Lady Gossipella, you both find yourselves in the bottom this week.

[The performance is a whirlwind of high energy, captivating dance moves, and spot-on lip-syncing. Both Gromette and RuPaul give it their all, leaving no doubt that they are here to fight for their place in the competition.]
ChatPaul: I have made my decision.
RuPaul, your performance was powerful and showcased your unique style. You brought the fire and passion required for this lipsync. Shantay you stay.
Gromette Mugler, your performance was outstanding, but it's time for you to sashay away. You will always be an icon in the world of drag, and your presence will be missed.
Gromette Mugler smirks and confidently states, "I may be leaving, but this is just the beginning of my reign. Watch out world, Gromette is coming!"

How Can Writers Use Notion AI?

Having experimented with Notion AI (both as an early beta tester and using the plan currently available to all users), here are some of the top use cases demonstrating the value of Notion AI for writers:

1. Summarizing Written Content

Notion AI offers an easy to use, one click command, that automatically summarizes a portion of text highlighted.
For the purposes of this example, I entered the text of a recent WSJ article, Fed Minutes Show Most Officials Favored Quarter-Point Rate Rise.

The original article text is listed below:
Most Federal Reserve officials thought slowing the pace of interest-rate increases at their meeting three weeks ago offered the best way to balance the risks of doing too much or too little to combat inflation, but some warned against the hazards of slowing or stopping rate increases too soon.
“A number of participants observed that a policy stance that proved to be insufficiently restrictive could halt recent progress in moderating inflationary pressures,” said the minutes of the Jan. 31-Feb. 1 meeting, released Wednesday.
Fed officials unanimously approved raising their benchmark federal-funds rate by a quarter percentage point to a range between 4.5% and 4.75% on Feb. 1. That increase followed six larger increases, including a half percentage point in December.
Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday the central bank will raise interest rates a quarter-percentage-point. Powell said more increases will likely be needed to continue lowering inflation.
The minutes of the gathering said that “almost all participants agreed that it was appropriate” to raise rates by a quarter point, or 25 basis points. Many of these officials “observed that a further slowing in the pace of rate increases would better allow them to assess the economy’s progress… as they determine the extent of future policy tightening,” the minutes said.
But a few participants favored or would have also agreed to a larger half-point move, the minutes said. “The participants favoring a 50-basis-point increase noted that a larger increase would more quickly bring the target range close to the levels they believed would achieve a sufficiently restrictive stance,” the minutes said.
Their discussion suggested another increase of a quarter point was likely at their next meeting on March 21-22. Since then, new data indicated stronger economic activity and slower progress on inflation than previously expected, which could keep the Fed raising rates longer than anticipated before the latest reports.
At the time of the recent meeting, Fed Chair Jerome Powell was facing increasing skepticism from investors over whether the central bank would continue raising rates because economic activity had been mixed around year’s end, with signs that consumer spending had moderated and weakness in the hard-hit housing sector was spreading to manufacturing. Investors were also anticipating rate cuts later this year.
The Fed raises rates to combat inflation by slowing the economy through tighter financial conditions—such as higher borrowing costs, lower stock prices and a stronger dollar—that curb demand.
Most Fed officials projected in December that they would raise the fed-funds rate to 5.1% this year, which would imply quarter-point rate increases at their next two meetings, in March and May. More than a third of officials anticipated lifting the rate above 5.25%. No officials projected rate cuts this year.
Some officials at the meeting observed that any continued easing in financial conditions could require the Fed to raise rates to higher levels or keep them at higher levels for longer than anticipated.
In the three weeks since they met, fresh U.S. economic reports showed that hiring and retail spending surged in January. The unemployment rate fell to 3.4%, a 53-year low, surprising economists who have long anticipated that Fed rate increases would slow economic growth soon. Economic growth also has rebounded in Europe, further easing worries of a global recession this year.
As a result, investors now expect the Fed to lift the fed-funds rate to around 5.4% in June–more than central bank officials had projected in December.
Inflation’s swift decline late last year also stalled in January. The 12-month inflation rate edged down to 6.4% last month from 6.5% in December and a recent high of 9.1% in June, according to the Labor Department. The department’s widely followed gauge, the consumer-price index, rose a sturdy 0.5% in January from the month before, a sign of still strong price pressures.
Two Fed presidents said last week they would have supported a larger half-point rate rise at the last meeting, rather than the quarter-point increase approved. One of them, Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester, said officials aren’t limited to quarter-point steps. “We can move faster, and we can do bigger [increases] at any particular meeting.”
St. Louis Fed President James Bullard also said he would support moving as quickly as possible to raise the fed-funds rate to 5.4%. “I don’t see much merit in delaying our approach to that level,” he told reporters last week.
Most other Fed officials have expressed a preference for quarter-point increases. Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin told reporters last week he liked that approach “because I believe it gives us the flexibility to respond” depending on how the economy evolves.
Mr. Barkin said he didn’t favor moving rapidly to an estimated peak rate before pausing because he isn’t confident the central bank can gauge how much its past rate moves are slowing the economy. “That theory, to me, requires more confidence in understanding” the effectiveness of tighter rate policy “than I have,” he said.
Overall inflation had slowed in recent months largely because of falling prices of energy and other goods. Large increases in housing costs have slowed, but haven’t yet filtered through to official price gauges. Mr. Powell has nevertheless justified continued rate increases by pointing to still-tight labor markets, elevated wage pressures and high inflation for labor-intensive services.
Mr. Barkin noted the surprising strength in January spending and hiring, but said he wasn’t ready to substantially revise his economic outlook because of the potential for unusual seasonal volatility, including a longer holiday spending season in the fourth quarter, warmer weather and changes in how employers are managing their staffing given recent difficulties hiring workers.
Investors’ shifting expectations about the Fed could already be helping the central bank because interest-rate policies work through financial markets. Changes to the anticipated trajectory of rates, and not just what the Fed does at any meeting, can influence broader financial conditions.
Since November, anticipation of a milder interest-rate path led financial conditions to ease somewhat after tightening substantially last year. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate, for example, jumped from 4% one year ago to 7% in November. It then edged lower, to around 6% earlier this month.
Over the past two weeks, however, financial conditions have tightened again as investors anticipate an interval of higher short-term interest rates. Mortgage lenders have reported rates are returning back to 7% in recent days.
After a few seconds, Notion AI generated the following text summarizing the article:

While not perfect, this is a really good summarization of a complex article/topic. And the Notion AI tool also provided options for further editing this text, including making the summary longer, rewriting the entire summary, or replacing a section of the article.

2. Changing Tone of Text

Another great feature of Notion AI is its ability to change the tone of text.
For example, I used the following excerpt from a Washington Post article on winter weather:
A strong, intensifying storm system continued its trek across the Lower 48 early Wednesday, unleashing high-impact winter weather that could cause widespread power outages and grind travel to a halt. At least 75 million Americans are under winter storm, ice storm, blizzard warnings or winter weather advisories.
In addition to hefty precipitation in much of the Midwest and parts of the Plains, there could also be snow in notably low elevations — including in areas that rarely see measurable snowfall. Even the Los Angeles County mountains are included in a rare blizzard warning — the first issued by the National Weather Service office there since 1989. Snow levels could descend to below 1,000 feet elevation as extreme anomalous cold at high altitudes whips up a serious elevation storm.
That same lobe of frigid air aloft is also spawning a surface low that’s marching across the country. Over the Upper Midwest and the northern Plains, up to two feet of snow could fall in what the National Weather Service office in Minneapolis is calling a historic winter storm. It could prove to be a top-5 event in the Twin Cities, where blizzard warnings slice through the metro.
On the southern fringe of the snowfall, mild air a mile above the ground will favor freezing rain, with a quarter- to a half-inch of ice accumulation, or glaze, possible in some areas. Parts of the Corn Belt and Michigan are expected to be hardest hit, including places like Dubuque and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, or Lansing, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor in Michigan.
The storm should finish its cross-country assault in the Northeast late Thursday into Friday, where additional winter storm warnings are in effect for northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
I then used the Notion AI change tone function, and selected the “casual option”:
The Notion AI tool then quickly generated the following text:
Wowza, we’ve got a major storm system heading across the US of A, bringing some serious winter weather that could knock out power and put a stop to travel plans. That’s no joke, folks! It looks like around 75 million Americans are under winter storm, ice storm, blizzard warnings or winter weather advisories, so you know this is serious business.
And get this, it’s not just heavy precipitation we’re talking about – parts of the Midwest and Plains could get snow, and we’re talking about areas that don’t usually see snowfall. The Los Angeles County mountains are even included in a rare blizzard warning – the first one issued by the National Weather Service office there in over 30 years! The snow could even come down to below 1,000 feet elevation. Yikes!
There’s a lobe of frigid air up high that’s causing all of this, and it’s also spawning a surface low that’s going across the country. In the Upper Midwest and the northern Plains, we’re talking up to two feet of snow in what the National Weather Service office in Minneapolis is calling a historic winter storm. That’s right, it could be a top-5 event in the Twin Cities, where blizzard warnings are all over the place.
On the southern edge of the snowfall, freezing rain is likely, and some areas could see a quarter- to a half-inch of ice accumulation. The Corn Belt and Michigan are expected to be hit hard, including places like Dubuque and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, or Lansing, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor in Michigan.
This storm is going to finish up with a bang in the Northeast late Thursday into Friday, where more winter storm warnings are in effect for northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Stay safe out there, folks!
While perhaps a bit over the top, it definitely demonstrates the AI tools ability to create content using different tones.

3. Writing Social Media Posts

While the previous two use cases demonstrate the Notion AI tool’s ability to synthesize and mimic different forms of text, this next example shows its power to create text based off of very short prompts. Specifically, how it can quickly generate social media posts.
I selected the option from the Notion AI menu to write a social media post. It asked for me to enter a prompt to complete this sentence:
Write a social media post about_____________
And I simply entered “spring cleaning.
In response, it generated the following social media post (including the hashtags):
Spring is here and it’s time for some cleaning! Whether it’s decluttering your home, organizing your closet, or deep cleaning those hard-to-reach areas, now is the perfect time to get started. A little bit of cleaning can go a long way in making your space feel refreshed and renewed. Don’t forget to donate any items you no longer need to charity or recycle them responsibly. Let’s all welcome spring with a clean and organized home!
#springcleaning #declutter #organization #cleanhome #refreshed #renewed #donate #recycle
While not perfect, I didn’t give the AI tool much information, so I was fairly impressed with this output.

4. Writing a Blog Post

Similar to the last use case, I wanted to further text the Notion AI tool’s ability to generate written content. So I selected the “write a blog post” option and entered the following prompt:
The tool generated the following blog post:

Overall, I was very impressed with how quickly it generated this grammatically correct and well written blog post. It’s worth noting that once the Notion AI tool finishes generating the text, there is a button you can click to make the article longer, which it also does with ease.

5. Finding Action Items

Last, I wanted to test the “finding action items” tool. To do this, I found a publicly available copy of a county’s meeting minutes over their local water authority (see PDF here):

I then ran the text through the AI tool, using the “find action items tool”:

Notion AI generated the following:
Overall, I was very impressed with the ability of the AI tool to generate action items. Since many Notion users (students, office workers, etc.) use Notion for note taking, this seems like an extremely valuable feature.
Conclusion
The examples of Notion’s AI tool make a strong case for adding the Notion AI tool to your writer toolkit! And the examples above only represent a fraction of the total use cases. Notion is already one of the best productivity tools for bloggers, and the addition of Notion AI for writers further cements its place on this list!

2023.05.28 20:22 TheDBA_CyberGuy Penetration Testing

Penetration testing or pen testing is the process of hacking a system with a written permission from the system owner. Unlike criminal hackers, the pen testers perform the testing with ethical intents, motives and sense of professionalism. Organizations conduct penetration testing to assess the effectiveness of their security controls and identify weaknesses of their security architecture. As opposed to criminal hackers, pentesters produce a comprehensive list of recommendations to bridge the gaps they identify and exploit.
Penetration testing is the process of undertaking simulated attacks on infrastructures, systems, and applications with the purpose of discovering exploitable vulnerabilities. Furthermore, organizations may conduct separate vulnerability assessment activities to backup their pentesting endeavors. However, bear in mind that the two are not the same concepts. Vulnerability assessments strive to identify and report potential weaknesses of information systems. Whereas penetration testing goes one step ahead and exploit those vulnerabilities as if real attack takes place.
The objective of penetration testing is to help organizations discover exploitable weaknesses before the bad actors find it out. Besides, the vulnerabilities may exist in operating systems, misconfigurations, systems, applications, firmware, hardware, and so on. Furthermore, the ethical hacker applies the same procedures and tools as the criminal hacker to identify and exploit those vulnerabilities.
The only differences between ethical hackers and crackers are the condition of permissibility and the motives behind the hack. The ethical hackers prepare comprehensive reports detailing the steps they employ to exploit the vulnerabilities and recommendations to fix those weaknesses. However, the criminal hackers attack information systems and people with the intent of financial gain, disruptions, fame, etc.
It is imperative to have clear understanding about different testing and evaluation techniques to avoid duplication of tasks and reduce IT security expenses. This helps organizations to enhance return on security investments (ROSI) attributes.

Security Assessments

Security assessment is an evaluation of organizational assets and security controls for possible risks and threats. Moreover, it is a comprehensive review of the security of a system, application, and other platforms. Security assessment is usually performed by internal security personnel. Besides, security professionals conduct risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities in the tested environments. Security assessment endeavors finally produce recommendations to improve the security posture of the tested platforms.

Security Audits

A security audits are the evaluation of security controls but more formal processes than security assessment. Besides, it involves systematic evaluation of security controls and information systems against defined standards. Unlike security assessments, security audits require the involvement of third party or external auditors. It ensures that controls are being enforced and followed properly throughout the organization, without any concern about the potential threats and vulnerabilities. Moreover, security audits are evaluations performed with the intent of demonstrating the effectiveness of controls to third parties.

Vulnerability Assessments

Vulnerability assessment processes are conducted to identify vulnerabilities and threats, which may exploit and impact an organization financially or reputation wise. It includes discovering weaknesses in information systems, design flaws, and other security concerns. Moreover, it is the process of identifying, quantifying and prioritization of security vulnerabilities in information systems. Unlike penetration testing processes, vulnerability assessment focuses on identifying the weaknesses and would not go further to exploit them.

Penetration Testing

Penetration testing is the process of security assessment, which includes security audits and vulnerability assessments. Furthermore, it demonstrates the attack, its solution and required remedial actions. It is all about finding out problems with the purpose of improving the overall security posture of the target system. While Vulnerability assessments are automated processes, penetration tests are manually performed by security professionals with expertise in conducting cyberattacks.

Why Penetration Testing

Penetration testing is one of the most important security practices that organizations undertake to protect their information and information systems. Moreover, organizations may primarily conduct penetration testing for one or more of the following reasons:

Type of Penetration Testing

Penetration testing is one of the crucial components of information security. Moreover, the purpose of information security is primarily to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA Triad) of information. Ethical hackers or pen testers will apply comprehensive steps to exploit identified vulnerabilities in the information and information systems. However, the testing process should emulate real world attack scenarios to mercilessly exploit the weaknesses and improve the success rates.
Moreover, pen testers should use same procedures and tools the real attacker would use to identify and exploit those vulnerabilities. Besides, unlike crackers, all ethical hackers wear white hats.
There are three major types of penetration testing namely white-box, black-box and gray-box testing. Moreover, these types of pen tests depend on the amount of information the target organization provides to the pen testers.

White-box Testing

White- or crystal-box testing is a type of penetration testing in which the pen testers have complete knowledge of the systems and applications of the target organization. This test is mostly conducted by internal security professionals who have full knowledge of the security controls and their architecture. Moreover, organizations may hire pen testers to perform the test but will provide them detail information about the target systems. Besides, the insider knowledge will help the testers to shorten the duration of the attack and find security flaws easily.
In white-box testing, the pen testers have privileged access to configuration information, network maps and source codes of the system. The aim of this test type is to identify and exploit potential weaknesses in various areas of the target organization. It is the most effective to uncover vulnerabilities but less realistic than black-box testing.

Black-box Testing

Black-box testing is a type of penetration testing in which the ethical hacker has zero knowledge about the target systems. This type of testing mimics the real world cyberattacks and is the most effective in discovering inherent security weaknesses. Moreover, the pen tester blindly attacks target systems from an outsider point of view and generate reports.

Gray-box Testing

Gray-box testing is a type of penetration testing that combines the features of both white-box and black-box testing methods. Moreover, it is a test in which the pen tester has limited prior knowledge about the target system. The organization will provide some information to the pen tester and the tester in turn will discover other remaining details.

Blue vs Red Team

The penetration testing types discussed earlier goes a long way in discovering vulnerabilities and exploiting them, including zero-day vulnerabilities. However, these security practices may have their own benefits and drawback. Pen testers employ various automated vulnerability scanning tools and these tools may generate false negatives and false positives at times. Therefore, organizations should complement these tests and establish additional security measures to protect their data, infrastructures and systems. And that is where the notion of blue and red teaming and other stringent security measures comes into play.
Organizations develop blue-red teaming exercises to simulate real world attack scenarios in which one team plays an attacking role (red team) while another takes a defensive role (blue team). However, these cybersecurity teaming structures should never replace penetration testing endeavors rather it should augment it.

Blue Team

The blue team plays a defensive role in the exercises and employs protective measures to detect and avert attacks from the red team. Moreover, the team is responsible for analyzing security controls effectiveness and efficiency in protecting information and information systems.

Read Team

A red team plays an offensive role and is formed with the intention of identifying and assessing vulnerabilities in information systems. Moreover, the team plays similar role with penetration testers or ethical hackers. And they identify potential vulnerabilities and exploit them from an attackers' perspective.

Phases of Penetration Testing

A penetration testing, as discussed above, is the process of identifying security vulnerabilities in information systems and trying to exploit them. However, the pen testers should have clear rules of engagement with their clients before starting any activity. Meaning, the two parties should enterer into binding written agreements by clearly defining the scope and the duration of the test. Because, penetration testing is an intrusive activity by nature and may cause business disruptions. Therefore, the document that contains and dictates the rules of engagement shall be a playbook for the pen testers.
The pen testers will finally prepare detailed report for both the technical personnel and senior management. Moreover, the reports of results of the penetration testing play significant role in finding security flaws and patching them. Furthermore, the penetration testing is a crucial activity that every organization should be doing to manage vulnerabilities and potential exposures. organization should be doing to manage vulnerabilities and potential exposures.
When conducting the penetration testing process, the pen testers shall employ the following major phases:

Planning and Preparation

Planning and preparation phase is one of the most important phases of penetration testing. In this phase, the pen tester and the target organization enter into formal agreement. Moreover, both parties define and agree on the scope of the work, the duration and formulate the rules of engagements. Besides, in this phase, the pen testers get explicit authorization or greenlight to start the ethical hacking.

Reconnaissance

Reconnaissance is the phase in which the pen testers gather every possible piece of information about the target. The testers collect information from both public spaces and secret sources without being detected by the target. In fact, the sources of information may include the Internet, official website, DNS records, social media and similar avenues.
The pen testers will apply different methodologies to collect just enough information. They may gather information through social engineering, search engines, spear phishing, open source intelligent (OSINT) and so on methods.

Scanning and Discovery

After the reconnaissance phase, the pen testers will have enough information about the target. Moreover, they will make use of the gathered information to conduct the scanning and discovery processes. The pen testers will specially use a host of automated scanning tools and manual procedures in this phase. Besides, the tools may include but not limited to, Metasploit, Nmap, Netscan, wireshark, Netcraft, SSDP, Nikto, and Burp Suite.
The pen testers will perform network scanning, banner grabbing, and vulnerability scanning on the target network. The objectives of these scans will be to identify open and closed ports, operating system, services, security controls and more. Besides, the ethical hacker initiates active connection with the target system in this phase to gather more information.

Exploitation

This is the most important and interesting phase of the penetration testing process. In this phase, the pen testers actually exploit the identified vulnerabilities and attempt to gain access to the target system. Moreover, they seek to use manual and automated exploitation tools to attempt to defeat the security controls put in place.
This phase is where the pen testers practically prove that there exist potential vulnerabilities in the target system. The pen testers do the hacking using an array of technical approaches and social engineering methods to exploit the vulnerabilities. The ethical hackers commonly use Metasploit framework to automatically execute exploitation against the target systems. Moreover, they may install malwares such as rootkit to persistently maintain their foothold and further compromise the target system.

Reporting

The pen testers will finally summarize the results of the penetration testing and make formal recommendations to fix the vulnerabilities. However, they produce the document throughout the entire testing process by capturing all the activities performed and vulnerabilities identified. Meaning, they record every bit and piece of information that happened during the whole process and submit the final report.
The documentation will serve as a baseline for upcoming penetration testing engagements. Furthermore, it should be stored in a secure environment, because it contains sensitive organizational information.

Penetration Testing Tools

There are tons of ethical hacking tools that professionals can rely on and use to hack systems. The following are some of the common penetration testing and vulnerability scanning tools in use today in the industry:

We will present detailed information about these and more penetration testing tools in an upcoming episode.

ComputeShader Issue: Vector3 data getting erased/overwritten at some point during computation

Expected Output:

Hey everyone, I've been encountering a strange issue today involving ComputeShaders. My goal is to write a script that does the following:
  • Decompose a mesh it to its parts on the CPU (triangles, verts, uvs, etc) using Unity's inbuilt Mesh library, then send this data to a ComputeShader as a GraphicsBuffer.
  • Dispatch the ComputeShader, then determine sample points based on a user-specified texture resolution.
  • Sample each point in UV space (0-1), determine if a triangle exists at that location (by comparing against the mesh's triangles array 3 at a time).
    • If it does, grab that point's barycentric coordinates within the found triangle.
    • If it does not, discard that point (assign it an arbitrary negative value so we know it is invalid) and bail.
  • If the point is valid, translate it to world space using the vertex array and the previously found barycentric coordinates.
  • Report this position as a float3 in a RWStructuredBuffer, assign at index (id.x * id.y).
  • Once finished, read the result RWStructuredBuffer back on the CPU, then spawn a bunch of sphere meshes at the points we determined in our ComputeShader.

The Issue

This seems like a pretty straightforward thing to do, and I was able to get it working on the CPU yesterday. The problem is when dealing with large texture sizes and polycounts the computation times become unbearably slow. This is a task much better suited for the GPU, and I thought implementation would be fairly easy.
The problem, though, is that some of my data appears to be getting lost in the process. It appears incomplete and corrupted, like the GPU gave up halfway through executing it, even with smaller data sets. Here are 2 images, one with the successful CPU implementation, and the other with the exact same GPU implementation.
https://preview.redd.it/z264xxz2ln2b1.png?width=1398&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cc3fe0c257bcf28953db945d4eee169ffbae50f
If anyone has experienced a similar issue before, or if I'm missing something obvious, please let me know! I'm an artist, not a programmer, and I'm pretty new to using ComputeShaders in Unity, so if you have any debugging steps that I could try I would greatly appreciate it!

My Code:

CSTester.cs: https://pastebin.com/ruTDNqNJ
ComputePointsGPU.compute: https://pastebin.com/6PbLHhJ1

Notes:

  • The thread size when dispatching the ComputeShader is the texture size on the X and Y.
  • I realize instantiating a bunch of spheres from prefabs is horrible, but it's not the final implementation. There will be no visual component to this in the end, I'm just doing it for debug purposes.
  • We can assume the user will provide meshes without overlapping UV information.
  • I ran a check to make sure the data was being uploaded to the ComputeShader correctly (by returning those buffers instead of the result coordinates) and it was. The problem is most likely occurring after the ComputeShader is dispatched.

2023.05.28 19:52 Nordicwallartcanvas What Are Creative Ways to Enhance Wall Decorative Art?

What Are Creative Ways to Enhance Wall Decorative Art?
When it comes to wall decorative art, there are countless creative ways to enhance its visual impact and make a statement within your space. By exploring innovative techniques and incorporating unique elements, you can transform your walls into captivating works of art.
Incorporating lighting into your wall art can also have a dramatic effect. Utilize spotlights or accent lighting to highlight specific areas of the artwork, emphasizing its details and creating a captivating interplay of light and shadow. This technique adds depth and enhances the overall visual impact of your wall decor.

#1 Go Big (and Stay Home)

https://preview.redd.it/dedzx44mtl2b1.png?width=5696&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc6e0e26e688234e0a627c4bd6d8bf349c8079ef
A large wall is the perfect canvas for a statement piece of art, whether that’s a blank living room wall or an accent wall in the dining room. If you’re concerned that a piece of large artwork might make your space feel crowded, don’t be. An oversized wall art piece makes a space feel larger and roomier by creating a single focal point.
A few of our favorite options for large wall art include:

#2 Create a Gallery Wall

https://preview.redd.it/ootff74ttl2b1.png?width=3000&format=png&auto=webp&s=928bbbb753030f29c3c59019848f188639ac931f
When you’re considering how to decorate a large wall, one oversized piece isn’t the only way to make a splash. Consider creating a gallery wall featuring varying wall art sizes or multiple small framed art pieces hung close together for maximum drama.
Creating a gallery on your wall is easy:
  • Gather a selection of artwork or photographs that you love.
  • Arrange them on the floor or on a large table to get a sense of the overall composition.
  • Mix up the sizes and orientations of the pieces, including a variety of large and small pieces.
  • Once you have a layout that you like, use a measuring tape and a level to mark the placement of each piece on the wall.
  • Hang the pieces according to your marked placements.

#3 Consider Adding Mirrors

https://preview.redd.it/une8pc62ul2b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=9e7f8cdeb864ecda78beafe54e6eab3b0fb4a3d5
By hanging a mirror, that is. Mirrors are a decorator’s best friend because they make any room feel larger and brighter. Try hanging a large mirror, or simply lean it against the wall for an instant update.
Can’t find one large mirror? Try hanging several small wall mirrors in a group for a similar effect:
  • Choose a variety of frame styles and finishes for mix-and-match flair
  • Or paint the frames to match for more cohesion

#4 Add Some Shelves

When you’re hunting for big wall decorating ideas, consider adding a set of floating shelves or a freestanding shelving unit. Shelves are a simple way to add interest to a large bare wall and break the space up visually. Plus, shelves let you show off even more of your personal style by adding a selection of 3D items to your wall art.

#5 Hang Up Textiles

https://preview.redd.it/kwy93z6dul2b1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=3063e4e7a4730668d06843bde5041ea2811f3281
We’ve already established that large wall decor ideas are usually a great way to take advantage of wall space. Decorate a big wall with a large wall tapestry or wall hanging for a dramatic focal point that adds color and texture. We love fabric wall hangings because they’re easy to hang without any need for wall anchors or other tricky hardware, and they come in colors and patterns to suit any style, from modern to traditional.

#6 Create a Decor Collection

https://preview.redd.it/m0345vagul2b1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=92ec10ba41d7d0d2fc3861381e5573323e1171a5
Whether you’re searching for bedroom, dining room, or living room wall decor ideas, you can use what you already have to fill a bare wall. Put together a curated collection of display-worthy home decor you probably already have around the house. A few options you can quickly assemble:
  • Found objects – If you’re someone who always picks up pretty leaves and interesting rocks on your travels, they can make a beautiful and meaningful display on a set of floating shelves.
  • Different kinds of plants – Add hints of greenery for varied textures.
  • Glassware collection – Round up all those vases, jars, and empty wine bottles you’ve been saving and group them together for a sparkling display. If you don’t have enough on hand, a quick thrifting trip should net you a wide variety of glassware in all colors and shapes.

#7 Think Green

https://preview.redd.it/ox9culumul2b1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=d15b53966739174da4ed5b7fc5e477acca1bd344
Tall potted plants can add softness and texture, helping to reduce the “flat” feeling of a large, blank wall. Use these tips to add some greenery:
  • Try corn plant, fiddle leaf fig, or dracaena placed on a console table for added height.
  • Add a corner shelving unit and top with a spiky snake plant.
  • Preserve floor space by hanging a trailing plant like Swedish ivy or pothos from a plant hook mounted to the ceiling.

#8 Try a Mural

If you’re feeling creative, a mural can give your space that one-of-a-kind touch. You don’t need to be a pro painter to accomplish it—just follow these basic steps:
  1. Create a graphic online using a design tool like Canva, or find a copyright-free image you like.
  2. Print your graphic, mark with gridlines, and transfer it to your wall by following your grid.
  3. If you have access to a projector, simply download your image, project it on your wall, and trace.
  4. Once your design is on the wall, choose your paint colors and unleash your creativity.
Love the idea of a mural, but aren’t so sure about executing one yourself? Whether you rent and aren’t allowed to paint or would simply prefer a more foolproof approach, you can skip these steps entirely if you opt for a premade, peel-and-stick wall mural printed with your chosen design.

#9 Mix and Match With Wall Art

https://preview.redd.it/kv0snlmpvl2b1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=9b0e2558224161af31dc9f20ed35beeda62b2264
With a large wall, there’s no need to limit yourself to one decor decision. If you’re having trouble filling the large wall space, try a combination of several options:
  • A mural backdrop with floating shelves in front
  • A three-dimensional wall art centerpiece flanked by a few mirrors in different sizes
  • A central tapestry, with a tall plant on one side and a grouping of small framed pieces on the other
Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and textures to create a look that’s all your own.
Wall decorative art offers a vast canvas for unleashing your creativity and personal style. By exploring various techniques, materials, colors, and lighting, you can transform your walls into captivating and unique visual statements. Whether you prefer traditional paintings, mixed media collages, or three-dimensional installations, there are endless possibilities to enhance your wall decor and create an atmosphere that reflects your individuality. So, let your imagination soar and embark on a journey of artistic expression, making your walls come alive with stunning decorative art.

2023.05.28 18:45 ThrowAwayBV17 Smoking after RF Microneedling? (

Hitting 30 in a few months, and decided to get some microneedling done to take care of some old acne scars. Actually, what the derma clinic I went to pushed for is AdvaTX (AdvaLight) then RF Microneedling (Vivace) and then Exosomes (some stem cell serum applied via microneedling too)
Problem is.... I was a very heavy smoker and drinking, recently I significantly cut back on drinking and plan on cutting smoking in a few years but I have no other ways to really manage work stress, youngest c-suite in our conglomerate across the other execs so it's a lot of pressure and a lot of work, and we just got a new ceo so it's been very very stressful so far. Literally been working weekends til 10pm calls with my ceo (who rly doesnt seem to have boundaries) over every little thing
I just had my session done yesterday (advatx+vivace+exosomes) and have been smoke and alcohol free so far, but tomorrow I'm presenting to the conglo CFO, and have a 1:1 with our board chairman on Tuesday and I'm pretty sure I'm going to cave (hell, just imagining it now REALLY tempts me already
How bad will my results be if I do? Since it's typically recommended to avoid any tobacco/alcohol for 2-3d minimum before and after (and recommended to abstain for 3w-6mo, tho rly... everyone ALWAYS just says 'just quit' like it's an easy thing to do)
I smoke iQos (so not quite cigarettes but not quite vapes). If I decide to just cap it (e.g. 2-5 sticks a day on work days) during the recovery period, will it make much difference? Esp if I can cut it on weekends (still a tall order, since my new CEO loves bugging me on weekends and work is my primary trigger for smoking/drinking)
I take VitB12 and VitC daily, started drinking more green tea (helps also with alcohol cravings, which are easier to 'replace' than smoking) and protein (fish/chicken) since they also supposedly help collagen production but I'm terrified of how I'll look after (if smoking ends up with me looking worse than before)
Before Everything (3w ago)
After AdvaTx (2w before RF Microneedling)
Right after All 3 (AdvaTx, RF Microneedling and Exosomes just yday)
After 1 Day (today)
Note S23+ so the camera smoothens it out a bit, little more zoomed in I have this
Before everything
Today, 1d after AdvaTx (2nd session), Vivace and Exosomes
I assume they didn't go too hard too early, since I've seen others with more drastic effects (no scabbing on my side for example after 1 day)
Doctor even says I can smoke/drink but I of course looked it up online and found marginally conflicting (but unanimous "DONT DRINK OR SMOKE") stuff.
Pretty sure it's legit bec honestly in my country, they cater to many of the artists and actors (and my doctor is my aunt's who is one of their VIPs, like $30k-$50k+ a year) and I got roped into like $4k (supposedly heavily discounted). But I am very suspicious on why she says it's 'fine' to smoke/drink (unless it's sandbagging I guess to keep me spending there idk) and wanted everyone's advice
Thanks in advance, I do plan on quitting soon once I've hit a place I'm comfy in career-wise and can afford to 'drop down' enough so I can finally start coasting (so I can avoid the extreme stress, since that's my primary trigger) but I can't afford to yet (just about to hit 30 soon) and honestly... I don't see any way of surviving the stress and struggle without any vices

2023.05.28 18:05 hinasilica Looking for baby shower ideas

So my boyfriend and I are in a tough spot with our baby shower. We’re due in December and have decided late September is a good time for the shower. The issue is, we live 900+ miles from any of our family and most of our close friends. We moved to Denver then immediately found out we’re pregnant. Our families haven’t met due to everyone living in different states. Our only idea is to rent a large cabin in the mountains, and split the cost amongst family. So we’re trying to brainstorm more baby shower ideas, I will put our main conflicts and restrictions below let me know if you have any ideas!
Edit 1: immediate family wants an in person baby shower, which I don’t have an issue with I’m just trying to figure out the planning.
Edit 2: should have mentioned, this isn’t for the sake of just having a baby shower. We want our families to meet each other before we have our baby, so the main goal is to get everyone together.
Let me know if anyone was in a similar situation and what you did, thank you all!

2023.05.28 16:54 Street_Hour_6410 Career transition options for pa communications professional at an IT company.

I (30F) have been working in an executive and internal ommunications team at an IT company for over 3 years. Previously, I have worked in content editing and writing roles for a few years.
I also volunteer in employee network groups at the company where I moderate and host events, interview executives, etc. I feel very energized when I am able to create a direct impact on an audience.
Recently, I've been thinking of diversifying my expertise to other areas which involves direct engagement/stage presence or even customer event promotions. Even though I like my current role in communications, I wouldn't want my long term career to be centered around making presentations for C-suite executives or creating thought leadership articles for someone.
What could be some possible paths that I could choose at this point in my career within the IT industry?

2023.05.28 15:52 DanH2138 Perrin and Faile

[Books] I'm on another yet reread--Path of Daggers now--and I used to hate Faile. Now I'm beginning to admire Faile and getting irritated with Perrin.
From the beginning, Perrin has always seen himself as a modest guy who only wants to be a blacksmith. Which would be cool, except that he's been put in a situation where he has to assume leadership. And instead of taking on that responsibility, he's always been trying to run away from it. And he would have succeeded--except for Faile. Instead he became the leader he needed to be--except for Faile.
When he returned to the Two Rivers, he was aiming to get himself executed by the Whitecloaks. Anyone with any foresight would have realised that would have actually accomplished nothing. The Whitecloaks would have just treated Perrin as another Darkfriend, and the Whitecloaks would have gone on and just continued to tyrannise the Two Rivers. Faile stopped that. Taking an analogy from the Well of Ascension--Clubs told Elend that the situation makes the leader, the situation in the Two Rivers called for a leader and he was the best suited to assume that responsibility at that time. Tam could have never done the same. Faile made sure Perrin took on that mantle. Some of the aspects of leadership are annoying--people generally know what to do and it can be irritating af giving commands when you know they know what they're doing better than you do, but they sometimes need someone with confidence to tell them anyway or assure them that what they're doing is right. Tam knew battle, and so he and some of the others knew how to defend Emond's Field better than Perrin did, but there needed to be someone who appeared in overall command--and that was Perrin. After the crisis was over, Perrin immediately ran from his responsibilities again. The die had been cast, he had become a leader, and there was no turning back. Faile saw this, Perrin never did.
The rest of the story is always about him assuming leadership in crisis situations, then trying to run from the responsibilities once the crisis was over with. Ruling the Two Rivers--he'd smoke his pipe with his servants, while Faile ran things. Going back to Rand--he just wanted to sneak away, Faile made sure he had an army behind him. Going to Ghealdan then the Prophet--he didn't want the responsibilities, Faile made sure he got Alliandre behind him. Dealing with the Shaido--he was paralysed without Faile. Even the Last Battle--we now know that the reason he put Rand above Faile was because of Lanfear. When, sorry to say--the fate of the world is more important than the fate of Faile.
Without Faile he'd be a self-absorbed and selfish git. He is a formidable leader, but he's never able to see past his nose and would have been nothing without her. Now, mind you--I REALLY like Berelain, but Berelain wouldn't have forced him to take on the responsibilities he did and grow.
