2023.06.08 20:43 C_Plot Socialism with U.S. Characteristics

From a comment at socialism
Just as conditions differ from nation-state to nation-state, so too would the paths and prescriptions differ. In the United States, where I live, I think of a socialism with US characteristics. Socialism in one country is challenging, but as the largest domino, making this domino fall to socialism in the US will aid a rapid spread of socialism Worldwide.
The main tasks for the proletarian State is to amputate the repressive apparatuses of the State and to expropriate the capitalist ruling expropriators who expropriated our federalist republic.

Expropriate the Expropriators

Expropriating the Expropriators involves two main steps:
1 ) ending exploitation by transforming every corporate enterprise from a capitalist plutocratic form of governance (one-dollar-in-wealth-one-vote) to a communist democratic republic form of governance (one-worker-one-vote). This could be accomplished with a mere act of Congress in its power of regulating commerce to make corporate enterprises adhere to the constitutional guarantee of a republican form of government just as we expect with corporate municipalities (one-resident-one-vote).
This first item corresponds to what I call the zeroth plank of the Communist Manifesto:
The proletariat will use its political supremacy to wrest, by degree, all capital from the bourgeoisie, to centralise all instruments of production in the hands of the State, i.e., of the proletariat organised as the ruling class; and to increase the total productive forces as rapidly as possible.
Capitalism, in digging it own grave, has already conveniently centralized “all instruments of production in the hands of the State”, since most all such instruments of production are now owned by corporate enterprises which are themselves creations, components, and instruments of the State. Now all that is needed is to transform the form of governance of those corporations from plutocracy to democratic republic rule of law.
2) ensuring all natural resource rents accrue to the public treasury and distributing those rents equally as the Unconditional Universal Basic Income (UUBI). This is a plank of the Communist Manifesto that has been embraced by the Georgist movement (followed of Henry George) which they call the land value tax (LVT) and the social dividend (SD). This also restores constitutionality in that the constitutional prohibition on titles of nobility prohibits the grant of this power to take seigneurial rents (as in titles of nobility rents) from the public treasury.

Amputating/Crushing the Repressive Apparatuses

Much of this is inscribed, in an idealist form, in the bill of rights and the constitution, but is not taken seriously in most respects. Especially the tenet expressed in the Ninth Amendment matches Engels paraphrasing of Saint-Simon that “the government of persons is replaced by the administration of things” (Anti-Duhring 1877): in my preferred and more precise rendition, the reign over persons is replaced by the administration of common wealth and other common concerns.
Taking personal rights seriously means ending drug criminalization and other ‘vice’ laws, where the ‘viciousness’ of such vice laws is entirely on the part of the police state. Without those vice laws, and the poverty created by stealing from the poor to give to the rich capitalist rentiers, we will make the rights of the accused and the rights of the convicted align with a Just socialist republic.
All persons treated equally before the law, whether when it protects or punishes.
The standing armies (including police forces) replaced with a restoration of the Militia, guaranteed in the Second Amendment, including Militia platoons for local security instead of mercenary police troopers.

Commonwealth Administering Our Common Wealth

The administration of common wealth—the administration of things in Engels and Saint-Simon’s language—becomes the primary limited role of government (not to reign over persons in their private personal spheres regarding sexuality, recreational intoxicants, gender identity, reproductivity, migration, and so forth).
Such Commonwealth would be administered within nested jurisdictions from Global (through a renewed and reinvigorated UN general assembly and its organs), federal, state, county, municipal, and direct democrat town hall commune/community levels.
The primary common resources administered include:
  1. Transport networks, whether passengers/persons/pedestrians or freight, data packets, and other things—as well as whether roadways, railways, electrical power networks, telecommunications networks, pipelines, and the like
  2. Insurance risk pools to facilitate hedging against all customary risks
  3. Money and payment systems
  4. A common credit pool, insured for savers and lending to borrowers according to their credit histories and credit ratings, determined by publicly deliberated and determined policies
  5. A common marketplace to buy and sell wares, with richly described facets of resources/commodities and deliberate measures to abate market imperfections such as positive and negative externalities, transaction cost frictions, missing information, and market dominance; also providing data on the prices of production and depreciation schedules for all customary resources, and other such salient data
  6. Services for extractable natural resources: extracting, homogenizing, and auctioning such resources
  7. A postal system that delivers merchandise from the common marketplace, provides a physical fallback for correspondence and periodicals delivered digitally, and accepts containers for recycling, reuse, or redemption otherwise (free to the postal customer, with redemption costs covered by a Pigouvian tax specifically honed to the container redemption/refuse demands of each specific commodity)
  8. A cultural commons that provides vital information services such as a comprehensive digital resource lending library, digital identification (complementing physical identification mechanisms) and directory/authentication services, cryptographic authorizations, public DRM services, credit history and rating services, open source public applied research software development projects, and more
  9. the nationalization of all armaments industries and implement industries that produce specialized non-fungible resources primarily for governments, so that instead governments acquire purely fungible commodities in a transparent and accountable manner and internally produce the specialized resources needed
  10. globalization of all social media (US based social media nationalized and then turned over, in trust, to the UN) and then thus restoring the distributed and decentralized architecture of the original internet and web, that has been undermined by these behemoth monopolists—strict separation of internet services from internet hosting (also adding a system of distributed moderation, where we elect to subscribe to the moderator services of our choice, end user stylesheets determining the handling of censorship, and content is not otherwise censored)

Rammstein fan Shelby Lynn from Ballymena alleges she was groomed for sex
A woman from Northern Ireland has told the BBC she was recruited and "groomed" for sex with the lead singer of the German heavy metal band Rammstein. Shelby Lynn, who also claims her drink was spiked at a concert in Vilnius in May, first made the claims on social media. Her allegations triggered a wave of other sexual misconduct allegations against the band's frontman Till Lindemann. The band have denied the claims. A spokesman for Rammstein told the BBC an internal investigation was under way with the first results expected early next week. The band, well known for its flamboyant shows and controversial lyrics, has been engulfed by scandal in recent weeks as a growing number of women claim that they were recruited for sex during concerts. 'Row zero' Like Ms Lynn, some suspect they were pre-selected on social media by a Russian woman, believed to have been a "recruiter" for Mr Lindemann, who invited them to parties before and after the show. She also gave them access to a restricted area directly in front of the stage, known as "Row Zero". Ms Lynn, who is 24 and from Ballymena in County Antrim, told the BBC that when she arrived at the venue a man named Joe asked her and other young women to line up. She said: "He started filming... about four girls, including myself. He got very close to our faces."
She claimed that shortly afterwards he picked her and several other girls to attend a pre-concert party, where she was given alcohol and told Till Lindemann would like to meet her during a brief intermission once the concert began. "I said: 'Why? Why me? Is this some sort of a sex thing?' [He replied:] 'No, no, no, nothing like that, nothing like that at all. Till's the perfect gentleman.'" Ms Lynn said she was ushered into a small room underneath the stage. "As soon as Joe opens the curtains my stomach drops - this is bad, this is a sex thing absolutely. "This room was no bigger than a Primark dressing room - like teeny tiny, dark black - you could maybe fit four or five people in it. "Till comes in and I immediately say: 'Till, if you're here for sex. I'm not doing that.'" The singer, she said, reacted angrily and left. 'Organised system' Ms Lynn, who has emphasised on social media she wasn't sexually assaulted, said her memory of the evening was "blurry" and she recalls feeling nauseous and vomiting at a party after the concert. She believes her drink was spiked and that she was the victim of an "organised system of funnelling girls". "I was groomed, 100 percent, no doubt in my mind. I was groomed for sex," she said. Rammstein initially reacted to her claims last month by releasing a statement online in which the band fully denied them. On Saturday, after other women came forward with allegations, the band published another statement, saying that they took the accusations extremely seriously. They condemned any kind of assault but asked their fans not to "pre-judge" them. A spokesman for the band has subsequently told the BBC that it is now investigating the claims and interviewing staff and crew as part of the enquiry. Rammstein is currently performing several concerts in Germany. After demands from several politicians, including the German families minister, Wednesday's show in Munich went ahead with no "Row Zero". There were specialist "awareness teams" on hand to assist anyone in a vulnerable position. The spokesman added that the band had severed contact with the Russian woman accused of helping to select women for "Row Zero". They said private after-show parties with Till Lindemann had been cancelled.

2023.06.08 19:57 randomguynobodyhere Publicly outted myself to everyone and it felt amazing

I’ve been out for a few years now but never really know who knows about me as it wasn’t a big announcement and no big deal was made of it. My immediate family have met partners past and present so it’s all good, even though I always feel very awkward and conscious about showing affection to my bf around them (they’re very supportive btw, it’s just my internalised issues). The thing is, we had a big family wedding last weekend, where all my brothers older intimidating masc “lads lads” friends were there. They would have always made me feel the closeted “gay fear” growing up (I didn’t come out till early 20s) even despite me having girlfriends and being generally “passing” as a straight country lad. Being seen as straight alot of the time has its drawbacks as you’re constantly having to come out and when meeting new people wondering “do they know?” and it feels like an internalised weight that you have to constantly carry and shed around people. So at this wedding I had no idea who knew as I wouldn’t have known everybody, and the majority of those that did know most likely have never seen the real me with my bf in everyday life. As my brother had his first dance (on the beach surrounded by candlelight), it came to the point for the groomsmen to come to the dance-floor with partners etc, I took a breath and said, “screw anyone that has a problem with this” (as I knew of close friends parents in the crowd who voted against gay marriage referendums too) and I ushered my boyfriend out onto the sand and we slow danced in front of 100+ people, centre of attention, and all I cared about was looking into his eyes and I could not stop smiling for the closeted kid who once would have shrunk in the light of all these country guys, whose judgement I feared. But there I was standing tall and beaming with happiness feeling more confident than I ever had. It was a fleeting moment but I’ve just been having these afterglow thoughts and wanted to share. Sometimes when you’re the only one standing in your way (in a safe environment to do so) you have to be brave and say screw it and break through the internalised crap.

2023.06.08 19:40 u_my_lil_spider On February 28, 2000, 6-year-old first grade student, Dedrick Owens, tried to kiss his classmate, Kayla Rolland, and was rejected. The next day, Dedrick took his uncle's gun to school and fatally shot Kayla inside of their classroom. He is known as the youngest school shooter in history.

Kayla Rolland was killed by a six-year-old male first grader at Buell Elementary School in the Beecher Community School District, located in Mount Morris Township, Michigan, near Flint. His father, Dedric Owens, was in jail for violating his parole, having previously been convicted for possession of cocaine with intent to deliver and burglary. The boy had been living with his mother, Tamarla, and his eight-year-old brother. She was evicted from her home, having been unable to pay rent with the $175 weekly wage she received from the two jobs she worked under Michigan's welfare-to-work program, and both boys then shared a single sofa as a bed at their uncle's house. The home, where his uncle lived with a 19-year-old man, was a crack house where guns were frequently traded for drugs. At some point, the child found a loaded Davis Industries P-32 .32-caliber handgun under some blankets.
The boy was known to have behavioral issues, and was made to stay after school nearly every day for swearing, giving people the finger, pinching, and hitting. Some weeks before the shooting he stabbed a girl with a pencil. Chris Boaz, a seven-year-old classmate, claimed the boy once punched him because he would not give him a pickle. The boy had previously attacked Kayla Rolland and, on the day prior to the killing, tried to kiss her and was rebuffed. Early on the day of the shooting, the boy and his brother got into a fight with Boaz's uncle, whom the boy threatened to shoot.
On February 29, 2000, the boy had brought the firearm, along with a knife, with him to school. During a change of classes, he fatally shot six-year-old Kayla Rolland in the presence of a teacher and 22 students while they were climbing the stairs, saying to her: "I don't like you", before pulling the trigger. The bullet entered her right arm and traveled through a vital artery. He then threw the handgun into a trash basket and fled to a nearby restroom. He was found there, in the corner, by a teacher and was taken into police custody soon after. At 10:29 a.m. EST, Rolland was pronounced dead at Hurley Medical Center while in cardiac arrest. The assailant was held in custody until the Genesee County Family Independence Agency could determine his placement. He and his two younger siblings were later placed with an aunt.

2023.06.08 19:33 Edokwin Reminder on Rule 6

Hello, all. I wasn't sure if I was gonna need to make this post, but it seems warranted now. Firstly, I'll just remind everyone of Rule 6 (Voting Policy):
Upvote quality content early and often. Use downvotes sparringly (be nice). One vote per person, per post or comment. Vote manipulation is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN and will result in escalating penalties.
I put emphasis on the sections that I think are most important and most likely to be flouted by new and existing members. Look, I love Reddit and you all see I use it all the time. But one thing I HATE about it is this thing of thoughtless, malicious downvotes. I despise it, and I don't want to see it in our Edokwin community. We're trying to do something different here, be better. So I'm reminding y'all to upvote posts and comments.
If a post was made in good faith and doesn't break any rules, you should generally only upvote it, reply to it, and/or ignore it. Seriously. We should reserve the downvotes for content that actually warrants it, like spam or low-effort posts. There are already too many places so stuck in groupthink and so generally toxic that it feels like people can't say anything. Do you want this to be another one of those? I sure don't.
I'll end on this article. It talks about how voting systems are a great tool for online communities, and how so many of us misuse them (especially on Reddit). Take a look.

2023.06.08 19:06 Relevant_Clerk8581 I'm ruining my life

I'm 14 years old. Top of my class. Life's going pretty good, right? Absolutely not.
I'm a delinquent.
I do nothing but sit all day. I play games and jack off. Pathetic, really. At least I'm not fat, or else I'd kill myself already. Thankfully, I'm malnourished. I eat more than enough servings for kids my age, and I'm malnourished. Just great.
My school situation?
It's the last quarter, and we're having exams next week. Not everyone, smart kids take it early for some reason. Ugh. Haven't even glanced at my notes, which are basically chicken scratch.
As for other stuff, I have three major tasks
Basically, I'm golden trash. I've tried working out once as a start of improving myself. I stopped just one day, and it turned into a week. I wish I could have some sort of mentor like in the books, someone who pushes me to my limits type of guy. Too bad I'm being raised by my mother only. Worse, we don't see each other much cause of work. So she got me a nanny.
...yay it's what I've always wanted. unlimited freedom. I haven't even talked to my mother who is working her ass off, for weeks. Ah yes, it sure helps my conscience.
Sometimes I feel like there's someone giving me exactly what I want just so I can feel dead inside. I'm not a religious type. But I'd be going to hell no questions asked.

2023.06.08 19:05 OkVariety6275 Game of the Month: The Way (by Lun Calsari)

Game Summary & Recommendation:
This is an old RPGmaker game, released in 2002 by Lun Calsari. It's a JRPG with a secondary battle system grafted on in a system that was never meant to allow it.
The main character is an asshole, often sexist, genuinely uncaring for the plight of many people around him, dislikeable and impulsive to say the very least. His actions range from neutral at best to awful, and yet he touches the lives of many people around him in important ways. You will care about people, you will rage against Rhue's consistently awful decision-making and cheer for Traziun, feel sorry for Kloe and seethe over Cetsa.
The plot is fantastic if somewhat convoluted, and I strongly, strongly advise going in without reading spoilers or the like. This game was a mindfuck for me in my teenage years, and the story holds up superbly today. There are also some great backgrounds (not by modern standards) the creator made painstakingly, and unique music pieces that do have that tinny MIDI sound but are still quite good and I think put to instrumentation would be great.
Lun remade the games so that you can simply turn off puzzles, or battles, or Plunges (the alternate battle system that some battles use) if you find them unpleasant, and I recently replayed the game with 'super easy mode' on. It's still a fantastic story and honestly the best thing that came out of those early RPGmaker days.
Installation & Run guide:
You can download episode 1 here for free, but you'll also need this font fix for the game to run properly with readable text. Episode 1 is also the worst episode - for my money Episodes 2, 4, 5, 6 are all fantastic, Episode 3 has far too much dungeon-crawling and not enough plot. If you find it tolerable and vaguely interesting I can guarantee you'll love the series.

2023.06.08 18:51 littleinternetdweeb I thought I might be the only one thinking this but am surprised to see I’m not!

I still feel like I might get some down votes for this LOL but I’m honestly pleasantly surprised to see on this subreddit today that people are talking about Teresa’s faults and the part she plays in her feud with Melissa and Joe!
But anyways — I was coming on here either way to ask if anyone else was cringing at EVERYTHING Teresa saying in part two of the reunion last night?
I like Teresa in the sense that I appreciate her time on the show and for all the early years of entertainment, and respect that she’s an OG and really paved the way for the housewives we know and love today.
HOWEVER, it is exhausting watching her try to fight. Melissa (who I’m def on the side of) is ON FIRE with her comebacks, receipts and quick wit during this reunion, and Teresa is just trying so hard to keep up and it’s cringy — she just has so much hate in her heart for Melissa she refuses to even listen or acknowledge any of her own wrongdoings, responsibilities or fault.
I honestly also feel bad for Melissa like nothing she ever does or will do will ever be good enough for Teresa and so I’m happy she’s finally accepted it and is no longer letting Teresa bulldoze over her with mean comments. Teresa can dish it but can’t take it
Overall it’s just cringey watching this all play out LOL but MAN DO I LOVE NJ!

2023.06.08 18:43 18CupsOfMusic A Wikipedia page from an alternative universe in which The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was a smash hit.

This is a creative writing task. Here is a possible Wikipedia page:

Martin Wilkes

Martin Wilkes (born 1982) is a video game developer, entrepreneur, and politician. He is best known as the co-founder and CEO of Daedalic Entertainment, the company that created the critically acclaimed and commercially successful game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum (2021).

Early life and career

Wilkes was born in Hamburg, Germany, and studied computer science at the University of Hamburg. He joined Daedalic Entertainment in 2007 as a programmer and worked on several adventure games, such as The Whispered World (2009) and Deponia (2012). He became the lead developer of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a stealth-action game based on the character from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was released in 2021 for multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The game received universal acclaim from critics and players, who praised its innovative gameplay, immersive graphics, and faithful adaptation of Tolkien's world. The game sold over 50 million copies worldwide and won several awards, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021.
The game's success catapulted Daedalic Entertainment to fame and fortune, making it one of the most influential and profitable video game companies in the world. Wilkes became a celebrity and a billionaire, and used his wealth and influence to pursue his personal interests and ambitions.

Political career

In 2023, Wilkes announced his intention to run for president of Nauru, a small island nation in the Pacific Ocean. He claimed that he had fallen in love with the country after visiting it for a vacation, and that he wanted to use his resources and expertise to improve its economy, environment, and culture. He also said that he was inspired by Tolkien's vision of a peaceful and harmonious society.
Wilkes launched an unprecedented campaign, using his media connections, social media platforms, and video game fan base to promote his candidacy. He also invested millions of dollars in Nauru's infrastructure, education, health care, and tourism. He promised to make Nauru a "paradise on earth" and a "model for the world".
Wilkes won the election by a landslide, receiving over 90% of the votes. He became the president of Nauru in 2024, and immediately implemented his policies and reforms. He renamed the country "Gollumia", after his favorite character from The Lord of the Rings. He also declared Gollumia to be a "video game nation", where gaming was encouraged as a form of education, entertainment, and socialization. He introduced various incentives and benefits for gamers, such as tax breaks, scholarships, grants, and prizes.
Wilkes also established diplomatic relations with other countries, especially those that shared his passion for video games. He formed alliances with Japan, South Korea, Finland, and New Zealand, among others. He also invited prominent video game developers, celebrities, and influencers to visit Gollumia and collaborate with him on various projects.

Wilkes's presidency was not without controversy. Some critics accused him of being a megalomaniac, a dictator, or a cult leader. They claimed that he was exploiting Gollumia's resources and people for his own benefit, and that he was imposing his personal preferences and beliefs on the population. They also argued that he was neglecting other aspects of governance, such as human rights, democracy, and security.
Some of Wilkes's opponents attempted to overthrow him or assassinate him, but they were unsuccessful. Wilkes maintained a loyal following among his supporters, who admired him for his vision and charisma. He also had a strong security force composed of elite gamers who were trained in combat skills.

Wilkes remained in power until 2031, when he announced his retirement from politics. He said that he had achieved his goals and that he wanted to focus on his family and hobbies. He appointed his successor from among his trusted allies.
Wilkes is widely regarded as one of the most influential and controversial figures in history. His supporters view him as a visionary leader who transformed Gollumia into a prosperous and happy nation. His detractors view him as a tyrant who oppressed Gollumia with his whimsical and eccentric rule.
Wilkes continues to be involved in the video game industry as a consultant, producer, and mentor. He lives in a luxurious mansion in Gollumia with his wife and children. He is also an avid collector of Tolkien memorabilia.

And without further ado, here are the players ranked 100-91 in the NFL Top 100 Players of the 2022 Season!

#100 - Garrett Wilson - New York Jets - Wide Receiver

Previous Ranks
Key Stat:
2nd Most missed forced tackles among WRs with 22
Written by: u/MattyT7
Garrett Wilson walked into the NFL as an immediate stud. He showed the world who he was in week 2, playing a major part in the destruction of the Cleveland Browns. Wilson caught two touchdowns, including what was the game-winner, to go along with 102 yards through the air. Despite having the worst quarterback play across the league last season, Wilson earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and it is not hard to see why. He is a demon after the catch with the ball in his hands, consistently finding ways to squeeze as much extra juice as he can out of a play. His jab step/cutback is lethal; simply put, he is not easy to stop. He may have only caught 4 touchdowns all year, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that the Jets offense was… well, not great. Even so, Wilson finished his rookie campaign with 83 catches for 1104 yards. You may not have heard, but the Jets quietly brought in a new quarterback this offseason, and the sky is truly the limit for Wilson going forward. Although he may not be the most physically gifted wide receiver in the world, he’s an incredibly crafty dude and is already one of the best at what he does.

#99 - Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay Packers - Quarterback

Previous Ranks
2021 2020 2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012

Key Stat:
2nd in the league in PFF's Big Time Throw Rate, trailing only Josh Allen
Written by: u/IMissHarambe878
A “down” year for ARod sees him slip to the bottom of the Top 100 here. His stats may have declined since his back-to-back MVPs, but Rodgers was consistently carrying this Green Bay team on his back this season. Despite carrying a broken thumb throughout the campaign (in which he didn’t miss a game), he helped try to steady the ship despite inconsistency across all other parts of the team (defense, run game, inexperienced wide receivers). He nearly dragged Green Bay kicking and screaming into the playoffs but was only stopped by a gutsy Lions team in Week 18 ready to play spoiler. Fun fact, Rodgers actually put up his career high in game winning drives this year with 4.

Here is a highlights package of Rodgers’ last season in Green Bay. Some specific highlights within the video:
- 1:01 – Rodgers shows he can still throw a pretty deep ball out to Watkins v Bears
- 3:29 – Deep throw v the Jets to Lazard, probably explains why he wanted him to follow him there
- 4:37 – Rolling out of the pocket to find Aaron Jones for a beautiful TD v Commanders
- 5:06 – Absolute dime to Doubs for a TD v Bills
- 7:30 – Beautiful play action out to Watson for a TD v Cowboys
- 13:05 – Sideline pass out to Mercedes Lewis v Dolphins
- 14:11 – Absolute monster of a ball out to Watson v Lions in his final game for Green Bay

All good things have to come to an end at some point, and this year showed Rodgers wasn’t the immortal some thought he was. Considering his supporting cast and the offense around him, I think he did the best he could. Don’t let that fool you though, he’s still very much an above average quarterback and I’m confident he will be higher up this list, this time next year. Take care of him, Jets, and thank you for all the memories, Aaron.

#98 - Jaelan Phillips - Miami Dolphins - EDGE Rusher

Previous Ranks
Key Stat:
Phillips’s 70 pressures is the most by a Dolphin since Olivier Vernon in 2015

Jaelan Phillips followed up a somewhat spotty rookie season with a much more polished sophomore campaign in 2022. He nearly doubled his pressure numbers, with an increase from 39 in 2021 to 70 in 2022 per PFF. He more than doubled his stops, jumping up from 16 to 36.
Check out this play, where Phillips, lined up at the top of the screen, uses his speed to beat the tackle upfield, and then works back down into the pocket for the strip sack in the 4th quarter of an important division game. Here's one where Jaelan Phillips lines up at 3t, against the LG, and then shows a nice motor to adjust for a 3rd down sack while fighting through a hold.
Phillips also showed off some impressive versatility. Per PFF's tracking, he dropped into coverage about six time a game, which resulted in the most coverage snaps out of all Edge Defenders nominated for this list, and 4th most of all Edge Defenders in the entire league. He even blocked a punt for good measure!

Once upon a time there was a slightly undersized Polynesian Safety from USC who played with wild abandon and a glorious main of hair, who ended up drafted in the 1st round by the Pittsburgh Steelers. His name was Troy Polamalu and as it turns out, he was one of the best to ever play the game at his position. Fast forward to 2021, and USC has another slightly undersized Polynesian Safety, named Talanoa Hufanga, who played with wild abandon and a slightly less glorious main of hair, who fell in the draft due to a poor combine showing and injury.
Snagged in the 5th round of the 2021 draft by the 49ers (praise be to Adam Peters), Hufanga played spot snaps on defense his rookie year as a rotational safety, while logging most of his playing time as a special teams gunner, with his most memorable play coming against the Packers in the NFC Divisional round, returning the blocked punt by Jordan Willis for a game tying touchdown. When Jimmie Ward suffered a moderate hamstring strain in the 2022 preseason, Hufanga capitalized on his opportunity, playing well enough to earn the starting S job when Ward came back, which in part led to Ward and the 49ers parting ways in FA.
During his 2022-23 sophomore campaign Hufanga ended up 3rd on the team/13th amongst all Safety's in tackles (97), 3rd on the team/6th amongst all Safety's in PD's (9), 2nd on the team/tied for 6th amongst all Safety's in INT's (4), including a pick-6 against Matt Stafford, and tied for 1st on the team/3rd amongst all Safety's in FF (2) EX. Despite being listed at only 6 foot 200lbs he plays significantly bigger and isn't afraid to lay wood or attack blockers in run defense. By far and away Hufanga's greatest asset is his raw instinctual play, his ability to diagnose and blow up plays based on pre snap alignment and pure gut instinct in a way offenses can't plan against. He's SF's wildcard, and on a defense laden with monsters and freaks he's perfectly positioned to reap as much damage as possible against opposing offenses.
While Hufanga's certainly has a long way to go to catch Polamalu, the similarities early in his career are apparent. History doesnt repeats itself but it sure does rhymes a whole lot.

Flashback to 2021. Melvin Ingram had signed with the Steelers in hopes of revitalizing his career opposite a premier Edge rusher in TJ Watt. All that stood in his way was a former 3rd round pick from the football powerhouse school of Charlotte entering his second season, Alex Highsmith. By midseason, however, it was clear that the Steelers saw something in Highsmith and Ingram demanded a trade in search of a starting opportunity.
Throughout the 2022 season, Highsmith rewarded the Steelers' faith in him. He showcased an array of pass rush moves to finish 6th in the league with 14.5 sacks, highlighted by his devastating spin move. He also led the league in forced fumbles, along with Haason Reddick. He actually graded even more highly as a run defender, according to PFF, and even showed good coverage skills for a LB.
Highsmith has blossomed into the do-it-all Linebacker they envisioned when they shipped Ingram off for a 6th round pick. While he still has some room to grow, there's no question that he and TJ Watt have as good a chance as any to finish 2023 as the league's best pass rush tandem.

Tua Tagovailoa, perhaps the most polarizing player in the NFL presently. Some of the criticism justified and some vacuous, somewhere in the middle of all this there is the realization that what we got in the 2022 season was a much-improved player who when given the confidence, right system and weapons showed the ability of elite talent. Finishing first in league passer rating, 25 touchdowns, around 9 yards Y/A behind one of the worst OL’s in the league (24th in pass block win rate, thank god for when TA was playing) was a bright spot for his growth and maturity as a QB and team leader. On intermediate throws, Tua ranked first in EPA per drop back and completion percentage. Tua had the lowest average time to throw on these pass attempts at 2.63, the league average for throws of 11 or more air yards is 3.02 seconds. There will be arguments of course that having two of the best receivers in the league has helped, there can’t be any argument, but it is interesting to note that Tua was ranked 33rd in the league in passing yards after the catch which suggests his arm is doing a lot of the lifting as well. 2 serious concussions and subsequently missing time robbed Dolphins fans of seeing him produce at a consistent level but at 8-1 as a starter leading into December (before the wheels fell off) there was enough to have him nominated and subsequently voted into the Top 100 players for the season.

Joining the Eagles mere days before Week 1 via trade, Gardner-Johnson would serve as the cherry on top for the formidable 2022 Eagles defense. More than just a change in scenery, Gardner-Johnson also experienced a change in position, switching from nickel corner to a more traditional safety. Safe to say, he adapted well to the change. Gardner-Johnson co-lead the league with 6 interceptions.
Gardner-Johnson often employs a ballhawk style coverage. He has a great sense for the ball in the air, and a blazingly fast approach which will often punish poor placement and deflections. Pairing with the disruption caused by the Eagle’s D-line and the coverage by their excellent corners gave Gardner-Johnson plenty of opportunities to flash those skills.
Mclaurin got Slay beat? It’s alright CJGJ will fly over to make the pick.
Underthrown? You’re done for.
Sometimes it feels like he spawns out of nowhere to make the pick.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention trash talk antics. If there was an award for instigation, C.J. Gardner-Johnson would win in a landslide. Few are better at getting under the opponent’s skin. Gardner-Johnson brings a level of grit, energy, and bravado that can instantly make the secondary better.

Ryan Ramczyk turned in a solid year again in 2022. However, he happened to be on the 2022 New Orleans Saints football in 2022 as well. The offense was woefully inconsistent and particularly struggled to get anything going in the 2nd half of most games ranking in the top 5 in terms of three and out percentage during the latter half of the game. Consequently, Ram was mostly ignored throughout the season where he only allowed 3 sacks, 5 QB hits and 20 pressures (per PFF). If I was to pick any performance of his to highlight it would be his work against Nick Bosa in week 12 he stonewalled Bosa all game and his only real mistake was a false start penalty. Ryan continues to be one of the strongest tackles in the NFL in terms of his anchor and his ability to deal with any pass rush moves that an opposing Edge might throw at him. Hopefully, 2023 will see his return to the upper echelons of this hallowed list

Tee Higgins was one of the biggest draft crushes I’ve had in some time, so it was a no brainer to pick up his write up, even though he plays for one of my favorite team’s biggest rivals. He’s just a really fun player to watch from a WR coach’s perspective. Let’s dive into a few things that makes Tee Higgins a Top 100 player and an elite WR in the NFL.
The first thing you have to love about Tee’s game is his deep ball ability. That has always been his calling card, even without elite speed. So, what makes him such a threat? Well, I would be remiss to leave off his size and frame. He’s long and broad and those two things allow him to high point footballs and shield off defenders naturally. However, what separates Tee from the other thousand long and broad people playing WR at any level up and down the country is an otherworldly ability to track a football down the field, very late hands and reactions to assist with preventing a defender from getting between the ball, and most importantly the body control of a world class ballet performer. I mean this when I say that Tee Higgins has the best body control down the field of any player in football and WR gurus like Urban Meyer, Brian Hartline, and Butch will say that body control is the hardest thing to teach a receiver to do and arguably the most sought after trait of a downfield threat, moreso than speed.
Here’s a great example of this. Sauce is playing Cover 3 to his side of the field, so he’s able to open to the QB and track the ball flight. He’s in decent trail position as like I said earlier, Tee isn’t a burner. However, Sauce is late to find the ball because Tee doesn’t give anything to the ball being flight until the last possible moment where his eyes widen and his hands go up. Sauce is even able to flip his head around and get in the line of sight of Tee, but Tee still effortlessly adjusts his body to maintain eye contact with the football and track it into his bread basket. Not often did Sauce get beat deep this year, but he sure did by Tee. Another example of Tee just sonning DBs downfield. In this matchup, the Browns are playing 2-Read. As soon as the slot WR to Tee’s side goes vertical, it becomes matchup quarters and Greedy Williams is attached to Tee. This is a ball that SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THROWN. Greedy is in excellent position on the fade. The safety is coming underneath on the deep out so even a back shoulder is typically a bad idea here. The Browns play this really well! But, still, here’s Tee high pointing the ball centimeters above Greedy’s hands and ripping it away from him, having the body control to remain on his feet even as gravity and Greedy are pulling him to the ground, and walking into the end zone.
An underrated part of Tee’s game is his route running. He’s very good on his release. The first clip of this cut up shows why. In the slot here, he stems his defender outside while pushing vertical. His delayed release and “out-in-out” stepping pattern freezes the curl/flat player in the cover 3. He’s in a bad spot to play the “curl” zone (he’s not running a curl) of the coverage because the backer to his side blitzes but Tee has him so frozen, he passes Tee off to no one and Tee is able to settle into wide open space. He also uses his body control to break off vertical routes very quickly, even without having the quickest of feet. Cover 3 to Tee again as most teams were scared of him getting over top of the defense. Tee options this go route off into a perfect flag comeback, using both his intelligence and body control to find open space. The defender is flipped open and running from the snap so he recognizes getting behind him is hard. But the defender is also in really good leverage to snap back down on fast break back to the football, so he has to really sell vertical. He closes space and cuts first like he’s going to run a fade/corner route. Then, he plants extremely hard vertically in one of the most unbelievable leg angles I’ve seen from someone that is still able to keep their feet and comes back to the football. The corner is completely helpless to stop this play.
There’s been this long standing whisper that Tee is a product of Jamarr. I attempted to illustrate as briefly as possible just how incredible of a player Tee is in his own right, but I would be remiss when discussing Tee in context of this list on 2022 play to mention how much he elevated his game with Jamarr out. Tee ended the year with 74 catches for 1029 yards. Nothing to scoff at. But with Jamarr out, he elevated his play to a pace of 110 catches for 1577 yards. Tee may be one of the only players in football that is held back by a top 5 WR talent playing across from him. He proved this year that both players serve a crucial role in this offense and if anything, he could stand to see more targets next season even with Jamarr in the fold. He can be the WR1 and when all the attention is paid to him, he seems to take his game to even higher levels. Look out for him next season climbing up this list even higher.

Quenton Nelson continues to be the best lineman on the Colts once again. Having a down year compared to his previous pedigree, he was not quite as dominant as his usual standards in pass protection, he allowed more sacks than he had previously, but some of that can be attributed to inexperienced QB play and poor pocket presence forcing him to have to hold up for longer. Nelson allowed 5 sacks out of the Colts’ 60 total allowed sacks, while starting all 17 games and coming close to the lead league among guards with snaps taken, showing he was nowhere near the biggest culprit on the team in allowing sacks. There were two plays that I felt summarized his pass protection. First, he does a great job picking up a stunt to give Ehlinger time in his first NFL start. Second, is simply a picture. The ball was snapped at 9:37, and approximately 2.5 seconds into the play, Q is the only lineman whose man is not pressuring Sam Ehlinger.
However, Quenton Nelson was still a force to be reckoned with in the run. Between his ability pull, or lead block for Jonathan Taylor, Quenton Nelson still retains his ability to be a dominant force in run blocking. Any Jonathan Taylor highlight will heavily feature a solid block from Q giving him the running lane he takes, or Q out in front leading the charge! He will do this on any DL in the league too, there were several big gains in the Eagles game where Q was able to move the very talented Eagles DTs. He routinely performed this well against some of the best Defensive Lines in the league, such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, where he does a great job preventing Heyward from wrecking this TD run,
Expect Quenton Nelson to be a massive cornerstone of Anthony Richardson’s development in Indianapolis, providing a solid foundation to every facet of the run game, and a source of protection up the middle against pass rushers

2023.06.08 18:11 thedudeislude Drop In Gaming Night at the Strathcona County Museum and Archives

Hey guys, I'm a volunteer from the Sherwood Heights Community League - www.shcl.ca - and I'm here to spread the word about our drop in Gaming Night that takes place every Monday at 7pm at the Strathcona County Museum and Archives.
Not only is it incredibly fun, but it's a great opportunity to meet new people who share a common interest.
This week we played smash bros, last week we got into some Mario Kart, and next week we'll be back on the smash bros and perhaps some of the new SF6, and it's all played on a huge projector screen in a climate controlled room.
It's actually pretty cool.
The beauty of it is that it's 100% free, and the only thing you need to bring is yourself (and something to drink). Controllers are welcome, but not needed.
The event is sponsored by Lead Head Lures and Crescent Geek, both small businesses located in Sherwood Heights.
As it currently sits, this will continue for 6 weeks, but should there be enough interest, we may make it a permanent event, assuming the Museum is on board.
Crescent Geek has sponsored our Night by providing some pretty sweet gaming themed prizes that we plan to give away near the end of our current run.
So come check it out, even to say hi! We're just a bunch of 20s somethings and early 30s having a good time!
Thank for reading and I hope to see you there!
