2023.01.11 20:43 LowOne11 Yamaha MX49, buyers remorse, glazed-eye shopping?
Edit: I have since traded in for a used Roland FA6. So far, it's freaking awesome. The keybed leaves a little to desire, but will probably get an 88 key controller at some point.
So I did what I told myself never to do. Buy a (used) synth before knowing at least 75% of what it can do and make sure it has the specific feature(s) I wanted. I generally don't go to MusicGoRound for various reasons, much less on a Sunday when 100 people will be in the store. ANYHOW. I still have 4ish days to trade it for a different synth.
My issue: I paid $399.99 for a used Yamaha MX49. I wanted at least to be able to do step sequencing/patterns without a computer. So I come to find out that one can only minimally mess with the pre-fab beats baked into the synth. Also, it appears one cannot really do much as far as sound designing without the software. Don't get me started on the keyboard action and lack of aftertouch. 😡 On top of this, they "didn't have" the software that's usually bundled with it. Man, I feel ripped off. Convince me otherwise or should I take it back for store credit?
I'm kicking myself for ever selling my Korg N364. Granted, the sounds and synth engine were/are a bit dated, but the sequencer and sound editing was straight forward and great for it's time.
Sigh....
Are there any mods for the Yamah MX49?

2021.06.02 13:39 vectorman82 Prior JBLE Military resident of VB, Thought I'd check in to see how things are in the ol' stomping grounds
Hi ya'll. I'm (35M) a previous resident of Virginia Beach - Between 2015-2018 I was stationed at Langley, but made the nightly trek across that tunnel. Since then, though, I've left and been stationed in Korea, and now Germany. I stumbled across this Sub and wanted to see how life is back there! (this post is mostly for nostalgia. it's one of my favorite assignments, to this day - aside from Germany of course)
Overall, I found VB to be a lot more fun place to be, so I made the (driving) sacrifice and moved down that way. How are things at the Oceanfront these days? Covid, Night life, and the like? I'm considering coming back on leave to the States, and back to Virginia. VB / Williamsburg will be the main places.
Anyone have any new recommendations for things to do, or good places to try out my new camera?
Some of the places I used to frequent:
- Boardwalk (For my daily run)
- Hook-up Cafe (for the shows)
- Sandbar
- MusicGoRound
- Planet Pizza (one of my favorite pizza joints)
- Murphys! still want to go back there.
- Skybar
- Catch 31

2020.12.19 18:44 NarcolepticOrca Budget 7 Strings?
It seems like Schecter is the only real budget option that I can find for 7 Strings. They have the C-7 around 400 and Omen 7 for 500. Does anyone have any other options for budget 7 Strings and are they worth it?
EDIT: Thanks for all your help guys! I ended up finding an LTD MH-417 on a website called musicgoround.com! I'll post photos once I receive it!

2020.12.06 18:35 c_dinsmore A straight forward purchasing advice request
Hey,
clarinet! I would like to buy a clarinet and mess around with it. I will not be learning to play in any dedicated manor; I would simply like to be able to incorporate new sounds into my music in a live looping or recording situation. The most I can ever see myself playing is simple quarter note secondary melodies or drone notes as a harmonic addition. The link I'm putting here is my local used music store that has treated me well through the years and usually has good deals. So, my request is for advice on which of these few clarinets available would be best, prioritizing tone and reliability for my limited use. If none of these is really worth it and I should look elsewhere, please let me know that as well. Thanks for any help you're willing to lend!

2020.10.13 01:44 jamin0731 Need Help Picking Out Keyboard
Hey everyone! So I'm a music therapy major at West Virginia University. I'm currently a freshman in my first year of piano(group piano level 0) and I currently practice on a casiotone MT-68 49 key keyboard. While it definitely works on very simple pieces, it won't work on more complex pieces, or pieces that extend beyond the range of the 49 keys (C2-C6). Due to the fact that the last two weeks of the semester, including finals, will be after they sent us home, and all virtually, I figured I would probably need a better keyboard for when I go home, and my parents have already offered to get a keyboard for me as an early Christmas present of sorts. The problem is that I have no idea what to get. I'll need a full sized keyboard, in case for the finals but it'll also be nice to have anyways. I think it would be preferably Midi compatible, and able to hook up pedals to it. If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations, I would love to here them. I'm thinking somewhere around $250 as the highest but, I'll see what I get.

2020.04.09 21:48 TJA1120 [QUESTION] HSS w/ Coil Split Wiring Help
So I am currently refinishing and upgrading my old Squier Affinity. I bought 3 pickups from my local musicgoround with the hopes of running HSS with a coil split. I bought a Super Distortion for the bridge position, Seymour Duncan STK-6 for the middle, and a Van Zandt Blues for the neck. My plan for the wiring is to have a 5-way switch with these positions,
1-Coil Split Bridge
2-Coil Split Bridge+Middle
3-Middle
4-Neck+Middle
5-Neck
Then when I pull on the Push-pull pot,
1-Full Bridge(No split)
2-Full Bridge+Middle
3-Same as before
4-Same
5-Same
I cant find any wiring diagrams like this online but I think it is doable. I think I could use a standard 5-way coil-split diagram but reverse the way that the push pull pot is wired. Is this possible? I will be using 1 volume pot which i think will be the push-pull and 2 tone pots. I have 2 capacitors but i don't know how many I will need. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

2020.01.25 11:31 poisenbery Is my epiphone SG special fake?
I have been playing acoustic for 15 years. Wanted an electric, but wasn't sure if it was for me so I decided to get something used.
A friend of mine in high school had an SG and I thought that they were cool. I saw one that my local music store, used, tried it out, seemed alright, and got it.
Problem is, I've been doing research on SG's since this thing basically fell apart within the first month of owning it (i take care of my guitars).
I took apart the neck and noticed a lot of strange stickers, some were clearly covering things up.
But my biggest issue is that the thing has no pick guard at all.
I tried looking up pictures of epiphone sg specials and the headstocks were different from mine, they all had pickguards, and I found 1 forum post on a guitarist website stating that the only SG special that he knows of was a limited edition cherry flame maple with gold hardware. That is not what i owned.
There are no screw holes for where a pickguard would be either, had it been removed (i'm assuming that the screws imply that the body has screw holes, correct me if im wrong).
The only picture I could find that was identical to the guitar I own is here:
https://www.musicgoround.com/product/duluth-ga/40042-S000172762/Used-Epiphone-SG-SPECIAL-Electric-Guitars-Red?gclid=CjwKCAiA66_xBRBhEiwAhrMuLarAs1Xd5qZYTLSS8EjvTq6_7jTPkUxZtU4U9uC6Ain7UC3aXgSM6RoCxoYQAvD_BwE This is the exact same guitar I own, and it is drastically different from all other pictures of SG specials I have seen.
Can someone please explain to me what's going on? Is my guitar from some discontinued year or is it an illegitimate, copy? This is the only used instrument I have ever purchased from someplace that isn't guitar center.

2019.11.22 13:42 Asquinol [NEWBIE] Learning to play as grief therapy and to fulfill a life long dream
My wife and I always spoke of learning to play. She was interested in learning the banjo and I have wanted to learn to play the guitar since I was a little kid. We were going to play bluegrass together. We never found/made the time.
She was a musician and had played some instruments when she was younger but unfortunately for me my parents were dead set against me learning music which is something I deeply resent and hold against them to this day. I am 52 years old now. I made a feeble attempt at learning to play when I was in my 20's and in the service back in the late '80s. I'm a meatl head and have always loved LP's thanks to players like Randy Rhoads and bought a used 1982 Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Peavey amp from a pawn shop and learned a little but sold them for something silly like a couple hundred bucks for gas money to go see some girl. I sure do regret that now. Fast forward 30ish years.
I lost my wife and best friend to cancer in August and I decided that I would dedicate myself to finally learning the guitar. This is how I chose to deal with my grief not only to honor her but for myself as well.
Thanks to this sub I learned a lot about what to look for and how to go about the beginning stages of my journey. I went to my local Musicgoround to look for a decent starter acoustic and ended up leaving with a used Epiphone Dr-150. then I started the justinguitar course and watching youtube vids, bought some books, etc.
I am obsessed now and learning everything I can about guitars has taken over my free time. The focus and concentration that it takes for me to do this is the only thing that I have found that can actually give me some relief from the grief I am going through, the only thing that keeps me from bawling my eyes out all day every day.
I am still learning chords and practicing chord changes, etc. I'm starting to learn some scales, etc. It's only been 3 months but I feel I have progressed fairly well. My hands are old and beat up so I have some issues getting my fingers to do what I want but I am getting there.
I know I don't "need" an electric guitar yet but I am obsessed and since I have always loved Les Pauls I had to get one but there was no way I could afford a real Gibson anymore so I found a used Epi LP Plustop Pro. Then I decided I wanted to learn how to do set ups and how guitars work etc. Being the mechanic that I am I need to know the insides and outs of things. I didn't want/need to mess with the LP and I have always wanted a strat so I started looking for a partscaster or something really cheap that I wouldn't mind taking apart and messing with and maybe making mistakes and I found a Fernandes LE-X for a ridiculously low price. It was in pretty bad shape so I took it apart and did a thorough cleaning and set up on it and it feels amazing now.
Anyways, this is my group therapy:

Apologies for the length.

2019.09.21 23:23 ParkerBleu Trying to find guitar tuning pegs with post spacing of 1 inch (25mm)
I found a guitar at the thrift shop for 5 bucks. With research, I believe it to be a Stella Harmony guitar from the 60s. It is a parlor size guitar. I found the bridge, it was a flat top bridge. A lot like the arch top, but for a flat top.
The only thing I am missing is the
3 by 3 tuning pegs for the guitar. I am looking for the tuning pegs that are a plate but with a 1 inch spacing between the posts. The only tuning pegs I have been able to find are the 1 3/8 (35mm) spacing.
I was surprised I was able to find the bridge and not the tuning pegs. But here we are.

http://imgur.com/gallery/1aVzxIw Look at what arrived today. Got a used Reverend Spacehawk online. 1st time buying a used guitar online. The pictures at musicgoround looked great online and was absolutely accurate. Looks new. Sounds and feels great. I'm so excited to play it more. I've been having a blast, playing consistently for about a year now after a not touching a guitar in decades. So I decided to give myself a well deserved birthday gift.
