Just broke up with my girlfriend of nearly 4 years.
We did so much together. We traveled all around the country together, we did so much together that I never did with someone else.
Around a month ago we broke up (mutual breakup), but I stayed at hers due to me saving money to move into somewhere else. I found out two days ago that she had been cheating on me and is now seeing someone else.
I found out because she has a very regimental routine. Up at 4am and asleep at 8:30pm. Two nights ago she stayed out until 10:30pm on a week day (she has work the next day) and immediately took a shower before she came to bed. She lied to me and said she met her Dad but I knew she hadn't.
Finally she admits everything after I continue questioning and I run out of the house. Crying, shaking and having a panic attack. I go to meet a friend who calmed me down and when I went back I knew I had to move out then and there.
While packing my things in a rush, she was shouting at me the whole time (I shouted back) and she rang her friends who were gonna come round and god knows what they would do.
So, I packed as quickly as I could.
I got to my friends house who's sofa I am staying on and it was such a horrible night.
I had thoughts about how close we were to getting married, having a baby and doing so much more. Most importantly I reflected our whole relationship and that is one tough experience to go through.
Unfortunately there were many signs towards this bad break up. Even though we both agreed to split up (she wanted to not me, I just wanted it to be civil), I never thought she would do something like this. I had always noticed how flirty she was with virtually any guy and it stopped me going out with her as I didn't want to see it. I always just thought this is just her personality (lets face it, you never want to acknowledge the truth).
We got a dog together around a year ago and to be honest, leaving our dog behind and to accept this other guy will replace me is fucking heart breaking.
I have been through a terrible break up before, so in a way this does not feel too bad, but the dog part sucks.
Now I am stuck in the middle of nowhere in my life. I had everything all planned.
I know the road I have to take to get better and it is just time. Previously my last break up nearly killed me, so I do have a lot of strength when it comes to this but it still hurts.
I just needed to get this out as I don't really have any friends who will listen to me (my friend currently is too occupied with his girlfriend, which is understandable). Unfortunately I am kinda socially awkward and I am so lazy at keeping friendships, so I don't really have anyone I can talk to.
I am not expecting any responses, I just want people to know that no matter how hard your life is, right now you CAN get out of it. Just work on yourself, do the things you have always wanted to, start a new hobby, play some games. All these things have helped me in the past, so here I am starting all over again.
I do just wish I had someone to talk to, but hey, I do this to myself.

Human rights: Food for a life or death thought ‘The right of nature’

Climate
--As Greta Thunberg once put it: “Avoiding climate breakdown will require cathedral thinking. We must lay the foundation while we may not know exactly how to build the ceiling”.

1. It is clear that having a specific limit, rather than fighting to stop every fraction of a degree in temperature rise, has actually been counterproductive. There is a perennial problem with targets, and that is that they are always still reachable --until they are not! In this way, they can be used to justify inertia right up until it is too late. And this is exactly how fossil-fuel corporations, world leaders and others have used the 1.5C target, that is, as a get-out-of-jail card to justify inaction on emissions. Continuing to present this temperature threshold as doable provides a fig leaf for business as usual. Take it away, and this dangerous jiggery-pokery is exposed for all to see.
   
2. Only if the Conference of the Parties (COP) acknowledges that 1.5C is now lost, and that dangerous, all-pervasive climate breakdown is unavoidable, will corporations and governments no longer have anywhere to hide, and no safety net that they can use as an excuse to do little or nothing. 3. Pledges made by duty bearers, including funding commitments, are not meaningless yet are not meaningful as results either. Let us not lose our focus and get distracted by comforting words. Biodiversity loss and climate crisis goals must be taken together, and it is action with results that must be demanded! As usual, any good news remains suspect and highly compromised until proven. Energy

1. There are a number of issues to which human rights (HR) law has paid inadequate attention. I will mention one here: Energy. While energy for heating and food has been addressed repeatedly by international HR bodies in the context of the right to adequate housing, there has as yet been no recognition of a free-standing right to energy. Given the recognized impact of (the lack of) access to energy on a range of different HRs, it was strongly argued before the current crisis whether there ought to be a solo HR to energy linked to other rights such as the right to housing or to the right to health. However, the linkage between energy and HR has been thrown into sharp dispute by the current crisis as pertains to both individuals and collective rights.

Has the time come to make an argument for a universal human right to energy? (Aiofe Nolan)

1. If so, five questions here:

· What should this right look like?
· Should it be a right to energy for specific, limited life-sustaining activities (for instance, cooking, home-heating or cleaning) or should it be conceptualized more broadly?
· How may its components --adequacy, availability, access (including affordability), sustainability, appropriateness, acceptability, and quality-- be defined?
· What obligations (progressive, immediate, core, or otherwise) should it impose? and, crucially,
· How may the recognition and implementation of that standard impact on, and be balanced against other HR, on both the here and now and on future generations?

These questions (and their implicit recognition that the right to energy requires careful definition if it is not to undermine other rights) cannot be ignored given the damage done by the established global energy system in relation to ecosystems, as well as the fact that it continues to pose the greatest environmental health hazards to those who have benefited the least from increased energy production.* (A. Does Nature have Rights? Why not? (Colin Tudge)

1. The nay-sayers to these questions fall into three main categories:

· First, there are those who say that to grant nature rights is not rational. Morality, in the end, is non-rational, it is said. The idea that Nature has rights is indeed in large measure non-rational. But it is certainly not irrational, meaning mad. Indeed, if we aspire to live in a harmonious world then the idea is entirely rational. It is certainly irrational to reject what is non-rational out of hand.
· Second: Some theologians argue that the idea that Nature has rights is somehow blasphemous. This line of thinking implies that man is in a quite different category from the rest of Nature and further suggests that the norms that attach to us (including the idea of HR) need not and indeed should not apply to the rest.
· Third: Many simply declare, peremptorily, that there should be no rights without responsibilities. But does it mean Nature has responsibilities…?

1. For the benefit of the hard-heads, we can point out: There are very good practical reasons to declare that Nature has Rights!

Why we should declare that Nature does indeed have Rights
--The concept of Rights helps to prevent abuse and therefore helps to protect.

1. Human beings need to protect the natural world much better than we do now, because only Nature can protect us against the extremes of Nature. We should protect wild nature for its own sake. It ought to be self-evident. The feeling that Nature really matters should never be overridden. It must be cultivated.
   
2. As we look more closely at nature, as indeed Darwin did, we find more and more examples of cooperativeness within species and between species. Overall, Nature is far more cooperative than it is competitive and if it were not so life itself could not have come about. (C. Tudge)

I'm a huge Dune fan and have read 8 of the books so far. Currently reading the 9th book (House Corrino). I'm also on my fourth listen through on the first campaign and legitimately laugh out loud every time Blaine makes Dune references.
To Jon Risinger: it may be a stupidly long book/series, though it's one of the best I've ever read!

A Cox technician came to my house last week and informed me that my modem/router combo Wi-Fi 6 unit is no longer supported because Cox switched to MoCA technology. My internet speed is 500 Mbps. The technician installed the Cox Panoramic Wifi-6 Gateway CGM4331COM made by Technicolor. The only difference between theirs and my old one is that Cox's has MoCA technology (Multimedia over Coax for home networking technology), and my old combo used WPA3 and WPA2/WPA3 mixed for security with no MoCA. Cox uses WPA2 for protection, as far as I am aware.
Nevertheless, I need a DOCSIS 3.1 with 32 downstream x 8 upstream channels and compatibility with Cox. I want to avoid paying $16 per month. I have searched the internet, and I can find a combo unit, but it is not a DOCSIS 3.1 or needs the proper number of downstream and upstream channels. Does anyone know the best combo routemodem that I should buy? I have no reason ever to increase my speed past 500 Mbps.

How do I go see a therapist to help me get over my trauma when the trauma is therapy? I haven’t been in therapy for a few years, and my mental health is awful right now. I’m terrified to go see any therapist. I have severe depression, autism probably, and have experienced many traumatic events. I know I could benefit from a therapist who is the right match, but I don’t know if they exist.
I started therapy when I was 8, with my school’s counselor. I liked seeing the school counselor, I liked talking to her about things I couldn’t tell my parents. But when I told her some of the things my mother had been doing to me (no details, but it was assault), I remember she got very serious and a lot less friendly. My parents pulled me out of school soon after this session, and they only took me to therapists who would allow them to sit in the room with me and/or read over the therapy notes after our sessions.
This continued well after I was 18 but still living with them. I had a very difficult time opening up about any issues with a therapist because I was scared they’d drop me. I know now that’s probably not what happened with that school counselor, but I didn’t know better. I’m ashamed to say it, but I was relieved when someone outside my family assaulted me for the first time so that I could finally talk about it in therapy.
My mother even brought me to some of the sessions with her therapist to “work on our relationship”. I dreaded these sessions. My mother was often framed in the most positive light possible by her therapist. Every issue was “fixed” with CBT, usually by concluding that we have a toxic family, my mother only ever did her best, I should have been more understanding. Finally, I blew up at the therapist, I was so done being blamed for everything my mother did and her never having to take responsibility. The therapist scolded me for making my mother cry and said I wasn’t invited back. Needless to say, I don’t have much of a relationship with my mother anymore.
When I tried to find a therapist after leaving my parents, none of them seemed to actually care about helping me. I was too scared to talk about my mother’s abuse right away, so I started with smaller issues. Each therapist had a different style, but they all continuously hug boxed me and assured me that nothing was my fault, even if it very clearly was, like bullying a girl in middle school. I liked the last therapist I was seeing, so I challenged her on that. I said that her telling me I’ve done nothing wrong doesn’t help me move on from my traumas or how to avoid putting myself in those situations. She told me she’d think about how to implement that into our future sessions. A few days before my next appointment with her, she dropped me and said I’d do better finding someone else. I don’t know if what I said was too abrasive or mean. I felt the same way I did when I was 8, trying and failing to ask for help. I haven’t been to a therapist since then.
My issues haven’t fixed themselves, though. I know I need to see a therapist, but any time I try to look for one through my insurance portal, I get so angry and overwhelmed and I have no reason to believe that another therapist can help. But I can’t eat more than a few sips of broth a day, I don’t sleep more than 4 hours, and I’m so explosively angry that I don’t leave the house except maybe once a week. I want to believe that there’s some therapists out there who want the best for their clients, but I don’t think I’ve seen one yet. How do I find them? Thank you in advance.

So long story short, met my SO as a teenager and have spent half my life with him. House, kids, stable economy etc. everything is great in that aspect. But there hasn’t been any passion or feelings past 10 years. Have been thinking of trying someone else on the side for many years but always the guilt holding me back. Last year it just happened when I met a man online in my position exactly and we talked about 7 months before we met even tho we live less than 1 hour drive away from each other.
So first meeting he just picked me up in his car one night when I was alone and we drove around just talking for hours, felt so natural even tho I thought it was gonna be super awkward. We talked a bit about how things would be settled if we decided to cheat and both agreed on “no feelings or a second partner as a double life, just sex”. He dropped me off at my place again and gave me the best hug I’ve probably ever felt (plus he smelled so good I was 1 sec away from inviting him in).
Since then it’s been 8 months and we’ve hooked up several times. Sometimes hotel, sometimes just in the back of the car. He even agreed last month to come to my house when my SO was away for work in another city even tho he early said that we won’t come home to each other. I got really sick a few months ago and had to go to the hospital with ambulance and ended up really on the edge of not making it. When I had the strength to get on my phone again he was genuine worried and was a really good support during recovery. After that we started to talk a bit more about deeper things and around that point I noticed how I started to develop feelings.. I’ve been too afraid to say anything about it since we agreed on not catching feelings. I’m afraid he’ll “break up” if I say anything, because rn I just wanna meet him and be around him as much as possible even if it means I’m hurting in between for having feelings for him. But I’m also afraid it will go too far that it makes me breaking completely..
I’d never let my feelings ruin his relationship and get in between his family tho. And I’d never ask him to leave his SO because I’m not sure I could leave my family despite this messy situation.
Anyone else in similar situations? How do you handle it? I can’t stop thinking about him and fantasizing about us doing normal couple things instead of sneaking around, and it’s killing me slowly 😅

Je bosse dans le domaine de l'IA, plus précisément dans le domaine de l'apprentissage par renforcement. Sur les 4 dernières années, le domaine de l'IA a fait un bond colossal, et beaucoup de jobs vont être remplacés
De la même façon que les Français répondaient massivement en 1998 que "ils ne pensaient pas avoir un accès privé à Internet de leur vivant", j'ai l'impression que beaucoup de gens sous-estiment à quelle vitesse on peut être remplacés, pour un coût ridicule.
La plupart des transports peuvent être automatisés, les jobs manuels aussi. Le principal candidat serait les robots comme Spot, créé par Boston Dynamics. Son coût de production est de 45000 euros par unité, pour une garantie de 5 ans. Ce qui représente moins que le salaire médian d'un français si on y ajoute les charges patronales. Il peut travailler 24h/24, pas de congé maladie, pas de pause pipi, et une fois mis en place, son coût d'utilisation est ridicule.
La combinaison de midjourney et chatGPT peut remplacer 90% de la force de travail dans la communication, les journalistes et auteurs sont déjà en train de manifester face au risque de se faire supplanter par ChatGPT et ses consorts.
Le seul frein notable, c'est la question des responsabilités. Si un robot commet une erreur, qui est responsable ? Quand les premières décisions juridiques vont êtres prises, de plus en plus d'entreprises vont se jeter dans la brèche pour bénéficier elles aussi de cette main d'oeuvre docile et à moindre coût.
Une des vidéos les plus connues à ce sujet est "Humans need not apply", qui date d'il y a 8 ans, qui avait vu juste sur pas mal de choses qui sont en train de se dérouler.
Cerise sur le bateau, la France n'est clairement pas en avance dans ce domaine, avec plusieurs années de retard (et donc une forte dépendance) face aux concurrents Américains et Chinois.
Et toi, qu'est ce que tu penses de l'IA ?

SAs someone who has:

1. Completed all quests
2. Completed Badum quests
3. Unlocked Everything (Factions all 20)
4. Have 285/285 with gear and guns
5. Have around 8m - 10m Kmarks
6. Am at best average at straight up PvP, most of my success is from playing smart and cautious (making moves at the right time, rotating and repositioning in fights, coordinating with my team, counting shots, etc)

These are the following things that I have observed about the game, but more specifically after patch 3.4:

1. Most of my time playing the game is spent PvPing in duo and trio squads, helping out some of my friends do their quests, or just going around solo gathering cables for letium drills, doing data drives for dungeons, or farming pistons and aluminum for oil, or just doing jobs for scrips
2. Having 10m sometimes but nowhere to spend it on since my stash is perpetually full means that I have to sell perfectly fine guns such as Flechettes and Advocates to buy Kors and Brutes just to keep my money down so I can pick more stuff up to sell and not waste K-Mark rewards from jobs.
3. There has been a significant rise in cheaters after the patch. Before the patch, there were at best 1 cheater every 4 or 5 raids. Now it seems that there are cheaters almost every other raid, and raids without cheaters are either empty or full of white gear guys doing what white gear guys do.
4. Dungeons somehow outclass Lab Keycard rewards. I understand that they are not the same thing, but I have over 800 hours this season, not once have I found a Lab Keycard. Good thing I opened the Lab keyroom just before it got nerfed.
5. Due to all the end-game content being around the north-western part of Crescent Falls, the south-eastern part of the map is empty. The only people I ever find there are either white gear guys questing, or cheaters who ape for my brute that ran from Starport Warehouse.
6. Matchmaking is still not fixed. I still get trios in my Crescent Falls/Tharis raids despite being a solo. (I literally see their drops, no they are not teaming)
7. Before the patch, I had to forge around ~125x before completing the 10 Slags I need for Badum. After the patch, I have managed to get 5 slags in less than 20 forges, and got 2 slags back to back just a few raids ago. The drop rate may be slightly higher than intended, but the sample size of my personal experience may not reflect the actual statistics.
8. Tharis is dead. As someone who actually enjoys Tharis Island, it's frustrating to have my favorite map nerfed to the ground that no one ever comes there anymore except for some white gear warriors looking for a comeup or just mining Tharis Iron, or those who are there to farm slags. It's a shame, because currently, Tharis is the only map that is actually almost free of any cheaters because of the level requirement to unlock the map in the first place(Most cheaters get banned before unlocking it, and the cheaters that actually play on Tharis are most likely retail cheaters meaning they are legit players but decided they needed an edge to play the game)
9. I've been randomly getting disconnected from the raid, with my gear just vanishing, then immediately dropping back into the same raid naked. Sometimes, this happens over and over again, until I can find respite from a stranger who mercy kills me or until I exit to station which I usually do.

Now what exactly can be done about the game? I will enumerate suggestions that directly mirror the points that I have made above.

1. The end game loop is absolutely terrible (wow, 103,127th time this has been said on the sub, i know). The game is absolutely in need of some content especially for end game players. PvPing is absolutely the only real thing that can be done, and while that is fun, why not just play other shooters that go straight to the point like Apex? Jobs are mostly tedious and annoying to do, and it does need either an update or a rework. A global leaderboard would also be cool, as we saw several people actually playing the game just to get on the howlerbuster boards.
2. The money cap seems like a band-aid solution to a bigger problem. With the current economy of increased ammo and repair costs, more items added into the item pool, and no more permanent insurance, below average players are having a hard time keeping a steady economy in the station whereas successful players still are successful. I personally never really had a hard time hitting the money cap over and over again, the harder thing to do is actually keep my stash from overflowing. I thought the approach to season 3 was to make it easier for newer players to get into but the current system hard gatekeeps casuals while barely doing anything to sweats. Something they could do is just to add a high-roller lobby where you cannot insure gear, and the lobbies cost Kmarks to drop into or even aurum, and is locked with gear requirement so you know you will be fighting people in gear. This also means that if you die, you do not get anything back, and that what you paid for to get into the raid is also gone. (An immediate effect of this implementation might be that we would get almost empty lobbies in regular and high roller instances due to the players being further split into separate buckets but this change alone would bring back so many of the sweats who stopped playing the game back, and the casuals could actually just finish their quests)
3. Nothing to say about cheaters really, but a few hours into the patch, guys were flying everywhere once again despite " 3.4.0 containing various backend improvements and tweaks to the anti-cheat formula and Yager adding new systems to the game to help detect and prevent the kinds of cheats we have found to be the most common ". I understand that 10 devs vs 1000 cheat makers is a tough battle, but certain measures to make reporting and banning cheaters can be done. Adding a death cam that can only be played after either the whole squad is dead, or the enemy squad is dead is one thing that can be doable, many other games have this feature. And before anyone starts going, "well, you can't do this because you can drop in the same lobby if you drop back down again and now you know where the enemy is", just make it so that players have a 15-minute cooldown per instance of the map which aligns with the time it takes for gear to despawn. That way, even the information you receive from the death cam is irrelevant 15 minutes later, and is only really useful for reviewing deaths and as evidence for cheating. Sure, you can get a lucky 5-headshot beam with a Kor on someone but 12x in a row in the same raid? That's an easy ban if anything.
4. Key rooms are massively underwhelming right now. Community Room? Here's a green creature mod for your smg. What's that purple keycard you got there? - Oh, it's an Overgrown Keycard. That's 3 Circuit Boards, 21 Basic Light Ammo, and a white backpack. I've gotten 5,000 Overseers Office Keycards, but 1 Basecamp Armory Key, please explain how this is possible? Back in Season 1, key rooms were heavily utilized(as they should). Base Camp Luggage Room was always open, so was Armory in Jungle. Garage in Greens? Good luck. Hell, even Community Room was worth the trek because Loose House was there as well. I've since sold all my keycards early into the season as I have found it utterly useless and I have better luck picking up high tier weapons and armor just running around Tharis Island. Something clearly should be done here, the Lab Keycard during the start of Season 3 was perfect - it was hard to get up there, it's an extremely rare card, and it can be only used once. The loot was god tier, but that's assuming you can evac with it. And almost everyone only really got one shot at opening it, but I suppose that was too good because now all you ever really get is 3 PKR Maelstroms and a blue set. Sidenote: Puzzle Rooms are also really bad. They really are only for the reactors, and the weapon crate is a bonus, but the process of completing the puzzle, especially solo, is way too much of an ask for so little of a reward. The only puzzle really worth doing is the one by greens prospect since it can be done solo in 15 seconds, but even then you get shot as soon as you start doing it.
5. South-eastern side of the map of Crescent should get some love. Add something there that would actually make players want to go there, or at least make them decide which side of the map they should go to. As of now, all the high-gear players go Warehouse/Pinnacle due to the large open areas which make it ideal for fights, versus the thick jungles of Favela that has dense foliage and full of cliffs where you die if you slip off of. Sure missions take you there, but everyone eventually completes their missions and its off to Pinnacle most of the time from hereon out. Buffing Community Key will not pull players there since keys are single use, and I understand the dungeon is there but let's face it, not many people enjoy doing the dungeon in the first place, be it easy as it was back then or how it is now.
6. Fix matchmaking. That is all. Please.
7. Whatever this is, keep it the way it is. Don't find out oh, the drop rate was increased to 30% instead of increasing it by 3% and reverting it back.
8. Add gear lock to Tharis. That's it, plain and simple. There should be some risk to Tharis, and on the opposite side of the stick, there should also be reward. What is the point of ammo being more expensive, repairs being more expensive, money being harder to keep, if I can just keep dropping back in to Tharis with just a white backpack, mine for 5 minutes and evac with 30-50k worth of Kmarks in Tharis Iron? Imagine doing that for an hour, that's an easy 300k right there. Just about the same amount you get from completing a letium drill, but with no investment, no risk, just sacrificing your sanity for the sake of money. As it stands, in order to add 5% less fauna damage and 5% less damage from storm strikes to my shield and stamina regen during storm on my backpack, I have to fight 6 free loadouts ratting in and around Tharis without gaining anything yet risking everything.
9. I understand ping limit, server issues, yada yada yada. Just make it so if you go poof, let our teammates pick our shit up. PLEASE GODDAMNIT. This is so dumb. I've lost countless loadouts to this dumb mechanic of being booted out of the raid, and now just to add insult to injury I get dropped back in but naked over and over again. What spaghetti code is this where you fix one thing and 12 other things become broken. Just please drop our shit, let some rando pick it up and have a nice feeling picking up a kor and purple set. I don't care. JUST DROP OUR SHIT PLEASE and thank you.

As it says in the title, I went into the crawlspace for the first time in 6 months and saw something pretty gnarly. We moved into this house, our first home, which is a new build, finished in 2019. We live on essentially wet land, there's a small canal and a large lake nearby, so the water table is quite high. Our house is built on concrete foundation footings that are supported by piles driven into the bedrock so I think the foundation isn't going anywhere, but take a look at my photo album linked at the bottom and check out that poured concrete floor which has cracked and sunk about 8" from the foundation footings, exposing dirt, gravel and some of the support piles. There alot of mouse poop because evidently rodents now have space to get in. I've also noticed the first floor is very very cold in the winter time, heating bills are high, and I feel like air is escaping through this crawlspace and moisture is probably coming in too.
I didn't notice any cracks of any sort in the foundation footings, nor are there abnormally large cracks in any of the visible walls. All windows open and shut properly, some doors are a bit jammed but I figured that's from regular expansion and contraction of the wooden doors and frames.
It's my first home and I'm fucking exhausted by the amount of shit that's happened to this house and the out of pocket costs. I don't think insurance is going to cover this. Who do I call to fix this, how much will it run me, is this something I can fix myself, how worried should I be about this problem? Has anyone dealt with this kind of issue?

Which row is the actual appointments per month, so I can figure out how long the actual wait is going to be?

A Cox technician came to my house last week and informed me that my modem/router combo Wi-Fi 6 unit is no longer supported because Cox switched to MoCA technology. My internet speed is 500 Mbps. The technician installed the Cox Panoramic Wifi-6 Gateway CGM4331COM made by Technicolor. The only difference between theirs and my old one is that Cox's has MoCA technology (Multimedia over Coax for home networking technology), and my old combo used WPA3 and WPA2/WPA3 mixed for security with no MoCA. Cox uses WPA2 for protection, as far as I am aware. Nevertheless, I need a DOCSIS 3.1 with 32 downstream x 8 upstream channels and compatibility with Cox. I want to avoid paying $16 per month. I have searched the internet, and I can find a combo unit, but it is not a DOCSIS 3.1 or needs the proper number of downstream and upstream channels. Does anyone know the best combo routemodem that I should buy? I have no reason ever to increase my speed past 500 Mbps.

Without the girls, life settles into a boring rut. I talk to them as much as I can on the pad, but they’re busy on Earth, hitting the ground running.
There’s been a lot of ground to cover before they’re caught up to where everyone else will be, particularly for Vilek. She’s often had to pull double-claws of studying, working her fluffy ass off to gain a baseline understanding of psychology in record time. Thiva’s classes on VP by contrast have prepared her well for humanity’s relatively simple technology.
That, and they’ve had to get used to Earth. Earth food, Earth culture, and a planet full of omnivores with forward-facing eyes. I’ve been doing what little I can to help coach and encourage them.
For my own part I’ve been restless. Given that I’m not able to look for a job yet, that physical therapy kicks my ass every other paw, and that I’ve got nothing to do other than look forward to a half-hour of chatting with my friends… I’ve started up on software again. It’s something I can do even while laying prone. Particularly since I have a way to write without using my hands.
What do I do with that, anyway? I can read minds. I can even use the raw data from a full brain scan to extract memories. There’s got to be something useful to do with this. It’s practically the only part of this entire debacle I haven’t bothered telling the UN about.
Honestly after what I’ve been through, I can’t imagine trusting them, or the Venlil government, with this. Bastards would be prosecuting thought-crime by the end of the week.

Jarkim’s opened his business a couple of weeks back. Without an actual office, since he plans to simply operate out of Slavik’s farm. As I understand they tolerate it as long as he also helps out in return for food and board. I hope the arrangement works out for the both of them.
I gave Jarkim some help with his online presence. He wasn’t initially sure about the black and white picture of him in a fedora and a tie, or about the business name “Jarkim Krakotl, Private Eye”. But as soon as humans heard about Venlil Prime’s only Krakotl detective they’ve ended up coming to him with their problems.
He sent me a picture of his first solved case, some runaway kid who got lost and reunited with her mother. He was still wearing the hat. No tie, though.

Today is my paw off from Chasa’s torments, and it coincides with the launch of another exciting new business venture. So I take the time to visit Mosun.
“Hey Martin! Hold on a minute!” I see the Yotul wrangling a bunch of foam mats around the large, empty room. And its wall-length mirror. Fittingly the place look like the midway point between a dance studio and a martial arts dojo, except for the soft and spongy floor. It’s meant to safeguard against falls.
I glance around the room while he huffs and plops the last few ones down. There’s perhaps thirty-five or forty foam mats scattered on the floor. “So are you being optimistic, or did you get a good reception?”
He looks at me, bouncing with excitement. Though his ears signal a bit of nervousness. “Five Yotul have signed up so far! That’s almost half the Yotul in the entire town! And almost twenty humans! Hanya’s bringing a couple of Gojid friends too, and we’ve got a few Venlil coming along with their humans… Oh, and an Iftali, that was a surprise. Honestly I may be a little in over my head here; I’ve never taught crowds before! I’m not even sure how much will translate across species!”
“So you’ll be learning on the job. I have complete faith in you. Are the Exterminators going to give you any trouble?”
He barks a laugh. “Hah! No, Jarkim had a talk with the magister. I got permission from Vaska’s office to teach the classes in the name of cultural preservation, so those motherfuckers can’t touch me!”
I laugh as well. “You might need to censor your language a bit as a teacher.”
“Combat Dancing is about honesty and expression, Martin. If I can’t live it, how am I supposed to teach it?”
Well, he got me there. “Anything I can do to help?”
He glances at me, his voice gets a little uncomfortable. “Um, I don’t know. Can you carry heavy stuff right now?”
I shrug. “Probably not, no.”
“Then I’ll be fine. You’re not interested in taking the class?”

“I think my dancing days are over, for the foreseeable future.” I wryly lift my cane and wave it as a small reminder. It’s wood, and I’m quite fond of it. Chasa found a Venlil craftsman who wanted to be the first to make one for a human, and he made it out of the wood of some kind of tree called Lampan. The color reminds me of mahogany.
His ears droop a bit. “Ah yeah. How permanent is that looking?”
I shrug. “Finger dexterity on the right hand’s likely never going to be the same, but I’ll be able to play video games. Left arm should recover enough for daily use. Leg should get a full range of motion, but I won’t be going jogging. Thankfully I look dignified with a cane.”
He wags his tail teasingly and cocks his head as he regards me. “Do you? …Must be a human thing.”
“Piss off. Mind if I sit in on the class?”
“Of course not!”
Turns out first class of Yotul Combat Dancing is a quick demonstration, and then Mosun talking to the quite large and varied crowd. He talks about the history and cultural significance of Combat Dances to the Yotul, the philosophical underpinnings of the artform, and the mentality to be cultivated in practitioners.
Everyone is listening with rapt attention, and a few of the humans are even taking notes. When he opens the floor for questions, a Venlil asks “Isn’t this an expression of Predator Disease?”
To which Mosun answers “No. Next question?”
Which is honestly as much of a response as that warrants.
I talk with Hanya briefly after the class. She says that she’s been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and that human therapy is helping her out. She even talks excitedly about piloting shuttles again, someday soon. I’m glad for her.

Once I get back to the house, there’s a man in a suit waiting for me. He’s tall, bald, and has very dark skin. I don’t recognize him. He extends his hand toward me, and I shake it. He speaks English with an African accent, instead of letting the translator handle it. I’d guess western Africa, but I’m hardly an expert. “Bamidele Adeyemi.”
“Martin Russo. Can I help you?”
He indicates the door. “May I come in?”
“Sure. My Venlil hosts aren’t home right now.”
“Of course.”
Once he’s been let in, and I’ve given him something to drink, I wait patiently for him to explain his presence.
“I am the UN liason to the district magister’s office.”
I keep my tone neutral and politely curious. “What happened to Robert McGinley?”
He keeps his tone neutral too, but friendly. He smiles at me. “It was decided that he should be replaced.”
Oh no. Anyway. “Alright. But… No offense mister Adeyemi, but why are you here?”

He takes out a pad. “I have some documents that the UN and the District Magister would like you to sign.”
I sigh inwardly and make a quite heroic effort to not sigh outwardly. I look at the pad briefly anyway. As I expected, it’s about making myself legally liable should I speak up about what I’ve gone through. “I’m afraid you are wasting your time. McGinley told me to sign papers like this too, and I told him ‘no’.”
He nods, entirely unsurprised. “I understand you signed similar documents over a smaller… altercation with the Exterminators. Why the difference of response, if I may ask?”
“Because the first time he threatened to have me thrown out of the refugee center if I didn’t.”
Bamidele’s eyes widen briefly. “I see. That does explain why you told him to ‘fuck off’.”
“Yes.” I pause briefly. “…You’ve been polite enough that I don’t want to use the same language. But.”
He laughs briefly. “Haha, yes, I understand. Different circumstances, yes? My predecessor tried the stick. I am here to try the carrot. So tell me, mister Russo, what will it take for you to sign?”
“There’s nothing that…” I pause.
I sit down. I’m briefly quiet. I miss my friends so goddamn much. I swallow, mouth feeling dry as I tentatively reach for the proffered lifeline. “I… hear Sweden’s lovely this time of year.”
He flashes his teeth at me in a broad smile and chuckles pleasantly. “Hehe, I thought you might say that. But… You do realize it is January?”

The thought of leaving this wretched planet and its wretched food and its wretched government and its wretched ever-present sun makes me feel like I’m already back in Earth’s lighter gravity.
I ended up paying Chasa back for all the pain and suffering she inflicted on me: The largest gift basket I could find online, filled with fruits, candies, and preserves of both Zurulian and human origin.
When I wake up at the start of the paw, my arch-nemesis has sent me two pictures. The first one is a schedule to keep for the next couple of months. In the second picture she’s put pillows and blankets in the basket and is using it as a bed, a paw raised in goodbye.
If the medi-teddies ever learn to weaponize their cuteness, humanity is in real trouble.
Packing is easy. I don’t have a lot. A band shirt from when I went to see ‘Where Angels Fear’, a few bad sketches of fruit, my dad's chess set, my pad, and a neural scanner.

The space flight actually lands directly in Sweden, somewhere north of the polar circle at a place called Esrange. I immediately realize that winter’s back on the menu, as the cold makes my left leg and arm ache like hell. It’s the dead of night, too… But I’ve missed night. So has everyone else, as despite the cold people are walking straight out into the snow to just stare up into the starry sky and stare in open awe at the sky, where the stars form a backdrop for the northern lights. I join them.
A poetic whimsy falls over me, making me grin at the cheesiness. It’s like the sky itself is welcoming us back home.
From Esrange we take cars to Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city. From there it’s a long train ride south. I’ve gotten a sleeper cabin. With the generous stipend from the UN, I have no need to scrimp.
Even so, it takes significantly longer to travel 1400 kilometers across Sweden than it did to travel 16 light-years from Gliese 832. I’ve got almost twenty hours to appreciate the irony.

I’m met at the train station in Lund by a man holding a sign with my name on it. His car takes me directly to the university. Everything feels very… ordinary, except I’m a bit dazed at having so many humans around me again.
We arrive a little before 8 in the morning. Excited students scurry to and fro, eager and hopeful for the first day of spring term. The driver is named Markus, and very kindly helps me find my way to my meeting. I’m left outside a door, standing around awkwardly.
The man I’m meeting with is Jonas Falck, and he’s the head of the department of computer science. While the UN has ‘encouraged’ the university to take me in despite it being so close to the term start, the decision remains with him.
I really wanted to see the girls first, but the meeting time was set for me. I desperately wish I had thought to shave beforehand. I’ve been using my beard to hide my weak chin, but it probably looks more unprofessional than-

Mister Falck is holding two cups of coffee and offers one of them to me with a smile. He’s got a full beard, a full belly, hair past his shoulders, and a pink hawaiian shirt to go with his khaki shorts and flip-flops. This man is clearly one of the most talented professionals working in the field today.

“So, do you mind if I ask…” He motions to my cane while I take a seat.
“How that happened?”
“Yes.”
“That’s classified. I’m not even joking.”
He nods once, like that was more or less what he expected to hear. He leans back in his chair, which creaks a bit, and takes a slow drink from his coffee while reading on his computer. “So you studied at Columbia University before the Bombing?”
“Yes.”
“And your family lived in New York?”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” He doesn’t say it unkindly, but he does say it as rote. ‘Oh you’re from one of the places that doesn’t exist anymore? Sorry to hear that.’
I nod awkwardly. “Yes.”
“And you were focusing on studying brain-computer interfacing?”
I feel like a recording. “Yes.”
“It’s very uncommon to add a student this late. The term begins today.”
“Yes.”
“We can’t provide housing for you on such a short notice, for one.”
“I have that handled, sir.”
He scrunches his face up. “Jonas, please. Americans are so formal.”
“Alright, er, Jonas.”
“So, Martin, what I’m asking for is a reason. To take you in right now, I mean, instead of next year.”
I nod. This is thankfully something I had planned for. My hand slips into my pocket, fingering the box holding the scanner electrodes. “Well, Jonas… I think there’s something you should take a look at.”

Handling paperwork and basic orientation takes most of the morning. I manage to get morning-and-evening classes to share my time off with the lambchops. That only works because most people don’t want evening classes. Evenings are for partying if you’re a student, so late classes are mostly for adults with jobs.
I end up standing around nervously by the entrance to the university building, counting down the time. I watch people passing by as calmly as I can, still checking my pad every minute or so for any messages and jerking my head around like a bird at anything that’s even a bit of a shade of gray.
I can tell the alien girls are coming even before I see them, since everyone is glancing curiously their way. I straighten my back and shift my weight from foot to foot. I feel like a dog at an airport, waiting for the return of its owner.
They’re looking around as I see them, and Thiva’s the first to spot me. Her ears perk up and Vilek immediately looks to me as well. As they speed up into a sprint, I’m a bit surprised to see them both wearing clothes. Both girls are wearing custom boots made to fit their digitigrade legs.
They’re both wearing coveralls, Vilek’s in a hospital teal and Thiva’s in a bright red. It’s been explained to me that many at the university have a student culture of wearing colorful coveralls that they decorate with patches, called ‘Ovve’, and that Thiva’s red marks her as a mechanical engineering student. Vileks’s teal, presumably, mark her as studying healthcare. Or specifically therapy, perhaps. I need to look it up.
Seeing as computer science students are apparently expected to wear pink ones, I’m thinking I might sit out this grand and colorful tradition. On the other hand according to the Internet it’s an informal rule to cut a bit from the ‘Ovve’ of anyone you’ve exchanged body fluids with and patch it onto your own. So I suppose I could be convinced.
The girls collide with me, thankfully gently. Their tails are wagging like crazy out of the back of their outfits, and they’re clinging to me. I inhale deeply, take in the distinct and pleasant scent of my cute Venlil friends, and cling to them as well. My fingers stroke through their thick fur, and I hear their happy wordless bleating and whistling.
I close my eyes and enjoy the moment, not giving one whit for the passersby watching the scene.
“Oh, girls, I-” Vilek punches me in the arm unexpectedly. The right one, thankfully.
“Ow!”
Even though her ears signal joy and her tail is wagging, her voice is still stern. “We learned what ‘lambchops’ means!”
Ah.

The student flat isn’t very expansive, but it’s larger than the one we shared on Venlil Prime. Probably because humans are just plain larger.
It’s currently sparsely furnished. There’s a couple of desks, a couch, a table, a beanbag chair, and a bunk bed. I take my shoes off in the hallway, as the girls do. When in Lund.
They help me unpack. There’s not a lot, but they had already set aside a little corner for me. I’ve got the beanbag chair instead of a desk, which I’m perfectly fine with.
I sigh and lean against a wall briefly. “I’m… so glad to be home.”
Thiva turns her head a little, flicking an ear in question. “You missed being on Earth?”
I chuckle, and pinch her ear-tip lightly. I lean over to give Vilek one too, for fairness. It earns me a pair of bleeps from them, and I go on the offensive to rub their heads and scratch their ears and do everything I can to make the lambchops squeal happily. They thankfully oblige. “I missed being with my herd.”
My friends are safe, they’re here with me, and we all have paths forward. I’ve fought and bled for this opportunity. I’m allowed to enjoy it.
I sit down on the couch with a quiet groan of satisfaction, finally getting to put my cane aside. “So, girls… how are you feeling about Earth so far?”
They grumble immediately. “It is so freaking cold!” “Snow! We do not like the snow!”
“It’s only for another couple of… Months.” They’re undressing right in front of me. I am left briefly stunned.
Oh right they don’t normally wear clothes.
Reminding myself of that doesn’t help. The context is what it is. They’re my best friends and my two favorite girls and they’re stripping naked before me.
My brain fails me. “…Okay, so, uhh. Um. Hmmh. Huh.”
Mother of God there’s nothing different! They’re naked. They’re always naked! It hasn’t been a problem on VP, it won’t be a problem here! Man up!
I take a deep and steadying breath and resolutely refuse to think of patches of white and red on a set of pink coveralls, with pink patches on their matching ones.
“I guess we should… buy some food? And some clothes for me to use? And…”
And they turn their heads toward me, staring at me with one eye each. Side by side. Making me feel like I'm being stared down by a single creature. One with forward-facing eyes. And an orange blush.
They take slow steps closer. Thiva speaks first with an amused lilt to her voice. “Or maybe this is a good time to talk. You know, about the house rules.”
Vilek speaks as well, moving her tail sinuously in a teasing motion. “Relationship statuses.”
Thiva comes in with the finisher, practically purring. “Sleeping arrangements.”

Shabbat shalom everyone! Today I’m continuing the most important lesson ever. Many say that Yeshua abolished the Mosaic Law, and that the Old Testament is long gone and obsolete. Is the Law and the Prophets abolished? Let’s put the some of the writings of the New Testament to the test of the Law and the Prophets.
Last week we learned who is King Melchisedec, and that even Abraham tithed 10 percent of the spoils to the King. We learned that King Melchisedec means King of Righteousness and King of Salem means King of Peace. The author of Hebrews also declared that the king was of a greater honor then Abraham because Abraham tithed to him, and King Melchisedec blessed Abraham with a blessing after they defeated the four kings. The author of Hebrews also compared the High Priest of the order of Melchisedec and the High Priest of the Levites and declared that Yeshua’s high priesthood was declared by King David in Psalm 110 by an unremovable oath by Father himself and Yeshua’s priesthood will never need an additional sacrifice for his personal atonement, because he no longer has the infirmary of the Flesh. We also looked at Isaiah 66 and learned that the Levitical priesthood will restart one day, but with Levites chosen by Father himself.
Again, we can see that looking at the New Testament writings with the lens of the Torah, that the verses become clearer and there are no contradictions. Here is the score far:

WMC no. 16 is Genesis 14:18 and Psalm 110:4. In these verses we lean that Yeshua is our High Priest forever, in the order of Melchisedec, and that oath can never be undone.

Hebrews chapter 8:1-5
Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; [2] A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. [3] For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. [4] For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: [5] Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
In chapter 8 the author starts with a summary of his point. We who have accepted Yeshua as our teacher, High Priest, and master, have accepted a High Priest not of the tabernacle on earth, but of the tabernacle in the heavens, made by Yahweh himself. He then declares that the tabernacle on earth is a copy of the tabernacle in heaven because Moses received the pattern (or plan) as detailed when he was up on the mount. This verse is from Exodus 12:40. Yeshua, as the Levites, is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices, but of the heavenly fashion, because if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all. Being of the tribe of Judah rather than the tribe of Levi.
Hebrews chapter 8:6-12
[6] But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. [7] For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. [8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: [9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. [10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. [12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
In verses 7 to 12 the author of Hebrews quotes Jerimiah 31:31-34 verbatim. I wrote an extensive lesson already on the new covenant as prophesied by Jerimiah and Ezekiel, you can get a refresh at this link: Was the Law abolished by Yeshua? What is better in the new covenant, and that has better promises? In the old covenant, Israelites had to learn and set the Law in their hearts and mind. We see this in the Shema at Deuteronomy 6:4-9:
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: [5] And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. [6] And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: [7] And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. [8] And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. [9] And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
A command from Father that the Israelites failed to do. There was something wrong in the people, not the Law. The Law is sealed and can never change. So, in the new covenant, God takes the responsibility from his elect and those who seek Him with all their heart and strength receive a new heart of flesh and a new spirit that empowers them to honor the Law of Moses instead of rejecting it as Jerimiah predicted in Jerimiah 6:19. That’s it. That’s all that’s new in the new covenant as prophesied by Jerimiah and Ezekiel. Make no mistake the Law of Moses is alive and in full effect to this day.
Hebrews chapter 8:13
[13] In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Now that we are empowered with the new spirit and receive a new heart of flesh (rather than a hard heart of stone), God’s elect are now complete and can once again obtain the blessings and the promises from Yahweh to his people as detailed in the Torah. Father’s elect are now made by His own hand, instead of men and women’s. That’s what is ready to vanish because the people failed at internalizing Father’s laws, statutes, and ordinances. Not the Law of Moses itself.

Tl:dr I can’t prove my address with Barclays, as none of their ‘valid’ proof options apply to me. Can’t get into my account anymore.
Hello all, I’ve got a bit of an issue, maybe some of you could think of something I could do.
Almost a month ago I got logged out of my Barclays app, I tried updating the app, deleting and downloading it, basically the whole shebang, but I kept getting an error.
I decided to ring them, after staying on the phone for almost an hour, I was asked for my country of birth, living situation, and apparently the third question they needed to ask could only have been asked in-person. I was like ok weird, but whatever. As I work a 9-6, by the time I finish work all of their branches are closed, and getting a day off work just for something this silly seems useless. So I wait till the weekend, go to their branch, just for them to tell me that they need my passport and proof of address. I had my EU ID card with me, but they said it’s not valid in the UK anymore. I am honestly annoyed and upset as this has been going for a couple of weeks now, and I wish they told me over the phone exactly what I’d need when visiting in person, but oh well, I was going to come back next weekend. I was like what proof of address works, the lady said - driver’s license, bills or a bank statement that you can just print with us in-branch. That was last Saturday the 3rd.
Today I go back, with my passport, print my bank statement and head to see a banker, just to be told that since the 6th of June, they their own bank statements are no longer a valid way to prove your address. Again, suuuuuuper pissed off as that’s my main account and not having access to it for almost a month has been a major major inconvenience, again, I wish the lady told me that HEY, you need proof of address, but be careful as our system is changing IN LITERALLY 3 DAYS so statements won’t work anymore.
I’m like ok, how can I prove my address? So there are three options:

1. Bill payments with my name - I live in a shared house, my rent is all inclusive of bills, the landlord pays it all, so can’t work.
   
2. Drivers license - don’t have it.
   
3. A statement from another non-online bank - the other two banks I use outside of Barclays are Revolut and Starling, both online, again, can’t work.
   

What am I supposed to do now?? There’s no way for me to prove my address, I asked if I could bring a letter from the HMRC or the NHS, they said it used to be valid before - not anymore.
I had this account for 8 years now, never had any issues, but this issue is massive.
I’m looking into getting an account with a different bank and getting rid of my Barclays one, but I just want to make sure I’ve tried everything I could.
They said they are making all of their systems super strict to avoid scamms?
What’s my best move here?

To start - I won't ever get rid of her and I wouldn't tell my husband this because he loves her so much - but I'm 100% definitely not a dog person. We also have a very high strung difficult dog. Our entire life revolves around managing her and her needs.
I work from home so I spend the most time with her. We got her at 8 weeks from the shelter. She was supposed to be a chihuahua but she's a 35lb chihuahua medium dog mix. I did all the expensive puppy training classes, personal trainers to the house, youtube trainer videos. She was perfect at first - but developed dog aggression after being attacked. After those attacks she can't go near any other dog, which makes just walking her difficult. We also had to stop taking her to daycare/boarding which gave us a break while we went out or traveled. We also can't leave her with friends who have dogs.
The dogs that attacked her are also our upstairs neighbors - which means any time she hears a noise from upstairs she barks and freaks out. My heart rate has started spiking as soon as I hear a step because I know she's going to lose her mind barking in a second. They're not even that loud but just the paws going up and down the stairs or walking around set her off. 90% of the stress of my life comes from managing her when she gets upset. Moving isn't an option.
My life is watching out for other dogs on our walks, watching out for the neighbors dogs not being out at the same time as her, instant positive reinforcement when we hear the neighbors at every single noise, leaving events early to take her out of her crate, not taking day trips with friends because I don't want to leave my husband alone to manage her, etc.
My whole entire life revolves around this dog. We can't even watch TV on the couch or cuddle with her for too long before she's barking at the noise from the neighbors dogs. She will also bark at any dogs on the screen. She also wakes up at 6am sharp every day so no sleeping in, and she's barking at the neighbor dogs going to the bathroom early anyways.
Training doesn't work, prescription meds haven't worked. Husband won't consider giving her up or putting her down - ever. I'm tired and on edge and sleep deprived - this isn't enjoyable at all it is torture.
My husband loves this dog. Even gently just mentioning that I didn't enjoy having her a lot made him so sad. He's a real dog person and she means a lot to him emotionally. She is so cute and can be sweet when she settles down, but that's rare. I can't wait until she passes. Sadly - she's 2 so it will be a while. A long time of not being able to live a carefree happy life.
My husband does help but he works in person so I naturally spend all day every day with her as I work from home. It's just the way our life is laid out.
I'd never hurt her and I take care of her as best I can but it's so hard. So so hard.

Shareholder Loans (Anti-Avoidance) Bill

make provision for further anti-avoidance measures in relation to Section 445 of the Companies Act 2006 .
BE IT ENACTED by the King’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
Section 1: Amendments to Section 456 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010
(1) Clause 4 of Section 456 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010 is amended as follows:

(4) Condition A is that—
a. the amount of the loan or advance does not exceed £5,000, and
b. that amount does not exceed £5,000 when taken together with any other outstanding loans and advances which were made to the borrower by—
i. the close company, or
ii. any of its associated companies.

Section 2: Amendments to Section 457 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010
(1) Clause 2 of Section 457 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010 is amended as follows:

(2) Relief is to be given from that tax, or a proportionate part of it, if—
a. the loan or advance or part of it is repaid to the company, or
b. the whole or part of the debt in respect of the loan or advance is released or written off, and;
c. no new loan or advance to the recipient is established within 2 years of the original loan date.

Section 3: Commencement, short title and extent
(1) This Act will come into force on the 6 April 2024
(2) This Act will extend to the entirety of the United Kingdom.
(3) This Act shall be cited as the Shareholder Loans (Anti-avoidance) Act 2023

Deputy Speaker,
I now present the second of the anti-tax avoidance laws that I wish to bring to the House, this one tackling the Section 455 avoidance measure.
Under previous laws, it was a known tax avoidance scheme for employed shareholders of a business to extract profits in the form of a “shareholder loan”, which in effect operated as a tax free dividend to shareholders. While successive Governments have tried to curb this avoidance measure over time, including through amendments to the Companies Act 2006 to include Section 455 and it’s related clauses, a number of issues remain. Firstly, the existing anti-avoidance measure fails to tackle loans of less than £15,000, which is not an insignificant amount of money on which tax should otherwise be due. Therefore this Bill reduces that threshold to £5,000 in line with other tax legislation to ensure that only trivial loans which would be expected in the normal course of business (e.g corporate credit cards) are incurred. Secondly, despite the anti-avoidance legislation a tax avoidance known as “bed and breakfasting” remains prevalent - these transactions are carried out around the end of the accounting period to prevent the loans etc appearing on the company’s Balance Sheet but it may also be done around the date which is 9 months after the end of the accounting period as that is the trigger date for liability to the charge, thereby meaning that a temporary repayment of the same loan and the return of these funds 9 months after the end of the accounting period mean that the funds remain not taxable on a technicality. Finally, given shareholder loans are not subject to interest, even if these loans are eventually repaid the present value of the loan value will be lower when such profit is formally extracted and therefore taxed by HMRC, which the legislation fails to prevent. To tackle these issues, this Bill also creates a measure in which any repaid loans made within 2 years of a previous loan being made are treated as though the original loan remained outstanding, and therefore taxable under the Section 455 clause of the Companies Act.
It is the position of Her Majesty’s Government that shareholders must extract profit from their business through a legally authorised and taxable dividend, and we will do everything in our power to remove the opportunities for avoidance.
In combination with the other two pieces of anti-avoidance legislation I will be/have submitted to the House, these measures are collectively expected to raise £3.4 billion. This proposed revenue generation and these Bills were raised at Her Majesty’s Budget Committee and unopposed. My thanks go to my friend the Right Honourable Phonexia2 for their assistance in costing.
I urge the House to rally behind this Bill.
(M: These costings are calculated as 40% of the tax gap for “Evasion” and “Non-payment”, given the difficulty of calculating the actual revenue generated from these measures).

Little bit long so buckle up and share all your advice :) My husband (USC) and I filed I-765, I-131,I-130, I-485 April 2022. Did some biometrics in May 2022. Moved house (updated address with someone on the USCIS phone line). My 765 & 131 were approved March 2023! Had to move again March 2023 but updated address again with no issues. April 2023 RFE was requested and we sent them off with the extra support documents like impact statements etc. We’re an IOE case number and assumed our case would take at least until December 2023 to be approved as that would be our 2nd year wedding anniversary. Having not been able to leave USA since arriving on my J1 Trainee Program visa in 2020 we decided to pop over to Ireland to celebrate my birthday with some close friends who live there for a week whilst husband also does some work meetings (June 9, Gemini FTW!!). Lawyers filled us in on the issues that would occur if case gets approved whilst we’re out of the country. Checked all month but no movement at all. Well, we flew out June 8. Checked again and June 6 (I swear I checked this in the am to no movement) suddenly it was being reviewed, June 7 131 & 485 were both APPROVED!! Obviously we’re thrilled and feeling so thankful, but also feeling frustrated and annoyed. Yep we took a risk going overseas. That’s on us. The frustration is that 485 is requesting biometrics and have booked me in for 6/30/23- this letter was addressed to our first address when we filed which is on the East coast. We’ve lived West coast the past two addresses and have not missed any mail since moving. Our lawyers are East coast based and they receive all the mail we do etc. The 130 was addressed to our current address. It’s Saturday so we’ll write our lawyers an email and all that jazz. I’m assuming I’ll be able to reschedule my biometrics because I do not want to fly back east to do the thing I’ve already done. That’s all depending on if they let me back into the country. I’m hoping that as the GC hasn’t been issued because biometrics appt that on a technicality I’ll be able to get back in with less issues.
Any advice on what we should print out for my re entry debacle (we have stuff with us but curious to see what people suggest). Also any advice on what to say to lawyer would be handy too.

Opinions on what I should do. So a little background I’m a USMC veteran got out in 2020, I have a 3 yr old child that I just spent almost a year and a half fighting for custody. The custody is, I have month on month off bc mom moved to a different state to be with family. But once my daughter starts pre-k next fall I will have school year and mom gets summers and major holidays.
My dilemma: i accrued 20k in debt fighting for 50/50 custody (which I did get and would do over again). But to my parents not a bank…credit cards. So my goal is to pay them back as soon as possible. I feel my ex will fight to get custody again and school year. This wouldn’t be so bad if she was stable and ik my daughter wouldn’t move a bunch like my ex had to growing up. If my ex would move back it’s week on week of which I think would be more beneficial for my daughter. I applied last year for a university police department and failed on a psych eval, it sounds bad but this was during my ongoing divorce and custody battle and the reason for the failure was the medicine I was placed on. Since I have gotten off the medication and switched to a medication that works for me and would allow me to work for the police department. Meanwhile while waiting on the police job I applied and accepted a job working for the electric union closest to me since working for them I have a great opportunity to be accepted into their Apprenticeship (applied before the police job and didn’t get in for lack of experience, which I have since working for them and becoming a union member) I applied again this year on the last day. The apprenticeships is a five year commitment where I get raises every year and after I’ll be making 34$ (take home) plus benefits which include 7.50 an hour for my retirement for every hour worked, a vacation check I pay into while I work for every 6 full months of 40 hours weeks I will receive 7500$. The issue I worry about is the work is over 13 counties and if I am sending my daughter to school I could see issues with getting her in the bud and such depending on when I worked and where it work. There is also a layoff after each job currently (could change) it can be anywhere from a month to 8 months. But during the apprenticeship I get to use my va benefits which gives me roughly an extra 1000 a month for housing year round if I spread it out or 1200 for 9 months a year.
The cop job should I apply again and get through it and hired would be 23 an hour with somewhat regular raises I don’t know where it caps out but after 5 years my daughter cna go to colleges there for free not to mention they have the best health Care probably in the state. They said all the overtime I could want as well and they are 12 hour shifts.
The big dilemma is the cop job would give me of a steady schedule and dependable income and make it harder if my ex wanted to try and fight me for custody in the future but I feel the union job would better set my daughter and myself up. With me my daughter always comes first and I’m struggling with this. But if I accept the apprenticeship I’m locked in or I burn the bridge forever. And I don’t feel I can’t down union job if I haven’t got confirmation of the cop job but it can take up to a year to find out and I would have to go for three months of training. RESOLVED, That a majority of all members elected to each house of the general assembly voting therefore, the following amendments to the Constitution of the State of Rhode Island be proposed to the qualified electors of the state in accordance with the provisions of Article XIV of the Constitution for their approval and that, if approved, it add an additional section to Article I, which is hereby amended, effective January 1 of the year following the next statewide general election, to read as follows:
Section 26. Equal rights.
No person shall be denied equal rights under this Constitution or the laws of this state, or any subdivision thereof, based on that person’s age (unless under the age of eighteen), race, color, creed, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sex (including pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes), sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
No government entity, nor any entity acting in concert with or on behalf of the government, nor any entity in its provision of public accommodations, employment, or personnel practices shall discriminate against any person either in intent or effect based on the characteristics listed above.
Nothing in this sections shall invalidate or prevent the adoption of any law, regulation, program, or practice that is designed to remedy or ameliorate demonstrated past discrimination on the basis of a characteristic listed in this section.
This section shall be self-executing; however, the legislature may expand upon the entitlement to equal rights and freedom from discrimination hereby secured.
RESOLVED, That said proposition of amendment shall be submitted to the electors for their approval or rejection at the next statewide general election. The voting places in the several cities and towns shall be kept open during the hours required by law for voting therein for general officers or members of the general assembly of the state; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the secretary of state shall cause the said proposition of amendments to be published as a part of this resolution in the newspapers of the state prior to the date of the said meetings of the said electors; and the said proposition shall be inserted in the warrants or notices to be issued previous to said meetings of the electors for the purpose of warning the town, ward, or district meetings, and said proposition shall be read by the town, ward, or district meetings to be held aforesaid; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the town, ward, and district meetings to be held aforesaid shall be warned, and the list of voters shall be canvassed and made up, and the said town, ward, and district meetings shall be conducted in the same manner as now provided by law for the town, ward, and district meetings for the election of general officers of the state.
