Background

I (M39) caught the running bug pretty late in life—in my early thirties. I was never an athlete, and actively disliked sports when in school. I regularly went to the gym in my 20s and early 30s, but my cardiovascular fitness was generally mediocre.
I first started running in 2014, but wasn't very consistent until 2020. That's when I put in about 3 km every day, running behind my preschooler as she learned how to ride a bike. I ran longer distances every weekend, gradually ramping up to 10 km.
In 2021, I ran my first competitive 10K (also at the Calgary Marathon). I did no training to speak of, and while I completed the race, I got severe shin splints from it. They would recur every time I ran long distances, so any running between then and now was intermittent.

Training

Come 2023, I decided to give it another shot. I signed up for one of Garmin's 10K training programs (with coach Greg McMillan) in February, and set an aggressive target for myself—10 km in 55 minutes. This was uncharted territory for me, as I had never maintained a consistent 5:30 pace before. My fastest 10K stood at 1:01:20, and my quickest 5K was 28:30 or so.
The hardest part was simply sticking to the schedule. Juggling the responsibilities of being a parent, having a demanding job, and a bustling family life made finding time for running a constant challenge. That inevitably translated to running either at the crack of dawn, or late in the evening (in Calgary weather … brr!). Training generally went without a hitch—I maintained a steady tempo of 25-30 km per week.
I learned some valuable lessons in these 15 weeks. The first was listening to my body. The fear of recurring shin splints haunted me, so I took two week-long breaks when I sensed overtraining. These breaks allowed me to bounce back from fatigue, stay motivated, and prevent injuries.
Another revelation came in the form of easy running. "What? I don't have to go flat-out, chasing personal bests every time I step out to run? Coolcoolcoolcoolcoolcool." Easy running was fun, stress free, and almost meditative!
I also paid careful attention to my nutrition, making conscious choices to cut back on greasy foods and snacks. Hydration became a top priority. I made sure to drink at least 72 oz of water daily and fueled up with electrolytes before and after my runs.
Lastly, I honed my running form, using YouTube videos and this sub for guidance. I zeroed in on my running cadence—a sluggish 150-155 spm—as a key area for improvement. I increased it to 175-180 spm over a span of a few weeks, and the results were immediate. My runs felt smoother, my legs were less sore after intense runs, and I could maintain my energy for longer. The increase in my daily step count was an unexpected bonus!

Pre-race

As the big day approached, I felt confident and ready. I adhered to my tried-and-true pre-race meal of steamed rice, mashed potatoes, and two boiled egg whites. The excitement kept me from getting a good night's sleep, but I knew the jitters were part of the package. Three hours before the race, I had a light breakfast—a peanut butter and honey sandwich and a cup of tea.
Then, for the next couple of hours, I immersed myself in quiet solitude, mentally preparing for the epic challenge that lay ahe … … naah, I was a bundle of nerves, buzzing around my home, incessantly reminding everyone to hurryuporweweregoingtomisstheraceZOMG!

Race

The weather was about 15°C and sunny; a tad on the warmer side. I planned to maintain a pace between 5:20 and 5:24 so that I'd meet my goal with about a minute and a half of cushion.
The race started on the dot at 7:30 am. The crowded field prevented me from sprinting too quickly. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise: I tend to take off like a jackrabbit, only to fizzle out prematurely. Still, even at a controlled pace, my first three kilometers flew by at 5:10, 4:59, and 5:09. Surprisingly, I felt like I wasn't pushing myself to my limits.
The course went gradually (very gradually) uphill for the next four kilometres, but my run in this patch was smooth: I maintained my target pace and felt things were going well. Somewhere along the way, I passed the 0:55:00 pacer.
Weariness started creeping in during the seventh kilometre. My mouth felt parched, my cadence fell below 165 or so (a telltale sign of fatigue) and my upper back grew stiff. I took a Gu, but it only made my mouth drier. My pace was still on target, but I knew this wasn't going to last. In the eighth kilometer, I allowed myself a slight slowdown in the eight kilometre (clocked 5:33) and again on the ninth. This lap was the slowest at 5:47 (or 3.6 roentgen: not great, not terrible). As I crossed the 9 km marker, the timer on my watch registered 48 minutes and change. Meaning I had a good seven minutes to make the final kilometre.
That knowledge just motivated me to pick up the pace. One forceful, final push—although torture—would be the cherry atop what had been a strong performance thus far. As I crossed the finish line,a feeling of exhilaration consumed me: I knew I had crushed my goal!

Post-race

Outside the finish zone, I reunited with my family, who had been my unwavering support throughout this extraordinary journey.
My daughter tackled the 1.2 km kids race soon after. Then my incredible wife fearlessly took on her very first 5K, braving the scorching noon heat to set a personal best time. I can't express how proud I am of both for taking up a challenge and sticking with it to the end.
I wanted to finish the race without sustaining any lasting injuries, and I think I succeeded. My legs were burning, and my calves are still sore. I have a slight, sharp pain above one ankle, but I hope it fades away soon.

Postscript

Looking back on this journey, I'm glad that I challenged myself with an ambitious goal, and went on to exceed it.
But what stands out to me is my commitment to the training plan. Consistently investing effort, time, and energy has resulted in tangible benefits. My stamina has improved, my VO2 max is up by two points, my resting heart rate has fallen significantly, and I feel fitter overall.
I'm now ready to tackle the next obvious challenge: conquering a half marathon. And who knows, perhaps a full marathon awaits me in the not-so-distant future.

2023.05.30 00:01 jjsefton17 Is there ever a time for hate? I get my answer four years later.

Four years ago this weekend I was in the middle of a mental health crisis, one of this existential questionings that was up and down. Context is I was 36 at the time and I had been getting deep into my mental health issues for 15 years and still couldn't find any meaning to it all.
I was sitting in my cubicle practicing a reading I had to give at a funeral. It was Ecclesiastes 3:8 which says: “A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.” I wasn't a very religious person, somewhere between agnostic and atheist depending on the weather. I thought I get Love and Peace, sure time for that, time for War, I mean I guess in self defense of the innocent (not self defense of the guilty). But hate, why is there any time for that.
I had spent 15 years trying to work on not hating myself, not hating my mental health diagnosis, not hating all the beautiful things pass by cause I couldn't get over how much I hated myself. So right there in my cubicle I thought from now on I will never believe there is a time for hate.
I'm still not sure how it all happened but later that day I did not go to that funeral. I went to my parents and told them I had a problem. We went to my wife and we talked about the problem. I wanted to kill myself or burn down my life and find peace disappearing from everything. I spent the rest of memorial day weekend in a mental health unit of a hospital.
When I went to bed I was awoken by something. Paralyzed in my sleep I listened. It explained everything to me. A blueprint to do something. I've been writing about it and its implications for years on reddit so I won't go into it all, that's not why I'm writing this.
I'm writing this because I at least followed the spirit of that blue print at every decision I made for the next four years. I still made some bad decisions, some very bad ones that almost destroyed me. But I also made a lot of good ones. Tried new therapists and therapies. Read about mindfulness. Tried meditating a ton. Focused on my children, my work, my marriage the best I could and centered my spiritual beliefs on understanding what unconditional love is.
Today on the four year anniversary of being in that hospital, one of one too many stays in institutions, I was feeling very grateful for the past four years, the good and the bad, admiring the beauty of the journey. I decided to take my daily walk with my dog around the neighborhood just clearing my mind and it hit me in it's simplicity. I knew instinctively after I had the idea that it was my higher power's answer to the question "But hate, why is there any time for that."
There is time for whatever you want. You decide what your life means. What you focus on is what you worship, and what you worship will guide your decisions as we all inevitably outsource decision making to whatever we worship be it a God, or a partner, a philosophy, a political party. In that context there is always time for hate. Here is what it has to do with unconditional love.
Unconditional love has been described many ways, I just posted about the most articulate description I've ever heard which was from an AI I trained. But AI is trained on the past so it can only ever deliver variations of the past. On this walk I got a new answer to the question of if my higher power's love is unconditional and I believe my higher power is powerful enough to create everyone and everything then why is there time for hate?
Unconditional love is the ability that comes from mindfulness to recognize that there is never a time to hate another human. Unconditional love is the realization that hate is toxic, but shit happens and you are going to get angry, its inevitable for whatever cosmic reason. It is your choice of what you do with that hate that defines you.
And my higher power's advice was that the only thing you should ever hate is me, the God of your choice. You will be better served focusing on gratitude, you will be better served focusing on the beauty of the present moment, you will be better served remembering all the love that got you this far in life. But if you find yourself hating something, and you end up like Sefton believing unconditional love and hate are mutually exclusive and get caught in a paradoxical hell that sends you to be visited by shit I can't explain, it is ok to direct that hate at whatever you believe in.
That is the source of your hate. That is your enemy. Hate whatever you believe in or forced to believe in or wanted to believe in. Not cause the source of your hate is wrong. But on the off chance you find yourself with a whole bunch of energy that is about to turn into hate, put it towards what you believe in. Your higher power or someone else's higher power can take it, after all they are immortal or whatever.
But that TSA Agent who is moving too slow, that neighbor who gets on your nerves, that life partner who won't let you be happy, that unfairness at work, in the economy, in politics, in cities and villages all over the world. All of those things are just people, like you. Mere mortals worried about the next pay check, their health, their children. They definitely have less capacity to deal with your hate than a deity.
So that is the answer to the question I asked my higher power 4 years ago. If you want to believe unconditional love is the most powerful thing in the universe and you want to practice it the best you can, and on the off chance out of whatever statistical probability of this chaotic existence you find yourself trapped in a moment where you just feel a lot of hate, you won't be in trouble for directing that hate at God or whatever belief you choose. But you will be accountable for the hate you cast out into civilization here on Earth.

2023.05.29 23:22 fatboyhandsomes Adults, do you ever have days where you think about your childhood in disgust and horror? (3 bullying stories)

SPOILER: mentions abuse and sui ideation/attempt (tried my best to leave out details while still giving context)
I was given no mercy as the awkward chunky autistic kid. I was never ‘human enough’ to be part of any group. The bullying ranged from senseless elementary level gossip in late middle school to telling me straight to my face word for word what a shame it is i havent k!lled myself. I dealt with the shameless gossip and commentary on a daily basis, even the teachers would give into the urge to join sometimes and i would be punished for fighting back or making any attempt to defend myself. I felt helpless and isolated the entire time i was in school. Even some of the people i thought were my friends were huge contributors to the bullying. Most of the bullying was verbal abuse but there were a few times it escalated beyond the typical “youre fat, ugly, ky$”, etc.
The three instances that stand out to me the most: 6th grade, i was about 13. The first twilight movie had come out and i was reading the book to see what the hype was about. If im honest, i thought the book was okay. I was never super into it but i didnt hate it either. Regardless, I immediately became the “cringy vampire kid”, and the rumor that i was telling people i thought i was a vampire circulated. I had to deal with comments and false accusations of biting people (in 6th grade!) daily. Looking back on it now I genuinely cant believe that these preteens were acting like 5 year olds over a kid reading a book. But that rumor hit its peak the day that a kid in my class hurt himself during gym. I dont remember what happened, but he hurt his leg and knee and was bleeding a little. I happened to be closest on the field when i saw him fall so i rushed over to him asking if he was okay. I didnt get close before he lifted his head, saw me, then started screaming in full seriousness that i was a freak and needed to get away from him. He was bright red in the face like a tomato and genuinely looked like he would try to hurt me if i went near him. He continued on to scream at me that i was creepy and that i was just going to “suck his blood” and to stay away. I didnt go anywhere or budge because i was in shock and honestly scared. Everyone started rushing over once he started screaming at me, and naturally people were telling me to get away from him. He kept saying he didnt want me near him or to touch him. After other people came to his side i just left. I dont remember much of that incident but i think the kid transferred out of our class because he was “afraid” of me iirc. I had never touched this kid or gone out of my way to speak to him before. He would occasionally bully me but it was usually light stuff. I never saw him again, but the feeling that washed over me when he started screaming at me i couldnt even name. The bullying lessened for a bit after that but it certainly wasnt the last time someone made comments about my “vampire obsession”.
Instance number 2: I was 14. This is where my mental health took a drastic turn downward so heres where my warning starts- i will also be mentioning abuse and my attempt but wont go into detail about events. I was beginning to have su!cidal ideation. I was being abused at home and things escalated one night where my mother told me she was disowning me and giving up custody of me because she couldnt deal with me anymore. I made my attempt in silence (pills) and she took me to my grandmothers house. Friends found out and they managed to get in contact with my mom- who was absolutely thrilled (sarcasm) to hear about my attempt. Went to hospital and was involuntarily admitted from there. So heres where the bullying starts. I had a friend who, months prior, confessed to me and said she wanted to be in a relationship. I turned her down and i clearly remember being gentle about it while still telling her that i dont have romantic feelings. She took it well. At least i thought she did. I got out of involuntary admission around my 15th birthday. This girl who claimed to like me didnt even say happy birthday to me, instead she went straight to demanding we roleplay (we were 15 remember haha). I was upset and ill admit, i was toxic and wasnt kind when i laid in to her about it. She was completely unapologetic and i cut the friendship off there. It seems harsh but that was a final straw for me with her. She was always very self absorbed and showed no signs of remorse or desire to change (and she didnt lol). So naturally, her reaction was to spread rumors about me. We went to different schools at this point but we went to school together previously. I thankfully had good friends by then who told me about the entire thing including them telling her to stop. The rumor? She was telling people that /i/ was madly in love with /he and that she rejected me. She told people my attempt was over her. She made the mistake of telling this to a friend of mine who already knew about her and the reality of the situation, and get this, we were in high school at his point (10th) and this girl was STILL spreading this rumor. My friend told me that she was so happy to tell her about it in a public space. She was disgusted for me. Havent had contact with or heard about the girl who spread those rumors since but i know she was very unliked by almost everyone at that school.
Third instance: High school. Made friends with this new girl. I definitely had issues with boundaries so i cant blame her for disliking me. But she continued on to pretend to be my friend, and thats what makes it wrong. There were multiple issues with her, but the one that stuck the most was the time she let her crush make jokes about how funny it would have been to see me die. I had been hit by a car on my way to the bus stop and he was actually one of the kids who was at my stop. I dont recall if he was actually at the stop or not that day but does it matter? Pushing aside my insane amount of bad luck, this kid went on to describe in detail how entertaining it would have been to watch me die firsthand. He made comments about my body and weight, “you should have seen the dent you left in that car”. And she just stood there and laughed in my face. Every time i think of her i remember how she looked as she laughed at me. I even remember thinking she was so pretty even though she was laughing at the idea of me being dead.
Now when i talk to or meet new people all i can think of is what theyre going to say about me behind my back. If i mess up, what rumors am i going to have to hear about later on? And the biggest one yet: does this person even like me or are they just pretending to so they dont have to look or feel bad? The only thing about these instances that doesnt completely haunt me is the fact that i know that none of the people mentioned above grew up to be decent adults. I dont know about the bleeding knee kid but i honestly dont care. As messed up as i was, i grew up to be (relatively) mature and well adjusted and thats the biggest flex i could ever have on any of them.

2023.05.29 22:45 randomsnoo1 CSK Clinches Record Fifth IPL Title in Rain-Swept Thriller Against GT

It's an unforgettable day for the Indian Premier League and the fans of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as the team claimed their unparalleled fifth IPL championship, marking a new milestone in cricket history. Defeating Gujarat Titans in a nerve-wracking, rain-marred encounter, CSK proved once again why they are a formidable force in the T20 league.
The drama unfolded at the jam-packed Narendra Modi Stadium, where the Titans, buoyed by B Sai Sudharsan's blistering 96 off just 47 balls, posted a daunting total of 214 for four. However, as rain intervened, the match took a dramatic turn.
The inclement weather led to a revised target of 171 in 15 overs for CSK, pushing the high-octane final to the reserve day. Despite the disruption and the mounting pressure, CSK rose to the occasion and completed the target in a heart-stopping final ball finish. The victory scene was set by the lion-hearted Ravindra Jadeja, who showed his mettle by smashing a six and a four off Mohit Sharma in the ultimate two deliveries.
In the earlier part of the match, the GT opening pair of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill provided a flying start with a quickfire partnership of 67 runs in just seven overs. While Jadeja outsmarted Gill with his deceptive spin, claiming him for a brisk 39, Saha displayed resilience, scoring a well-made 54. The stage was then taken over by Sudharsan, who belted the CSK bowling with six sixes and eight boundaries, showcasing his brilliant form.
This grand finale could potentially be the last IPL appearance for the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni, making the victory all the more emotional for the CSK camp. Despite some setbacks, including Deepak Chahar dropping Gill early in his innings, CSK managed to rise above and clinch the title in a cinematic fashion.
So, it's official. The IPL 2023 crown rests with CSK. The Lions have roared once again, and the echoes of their victory will be heard for a long time in the annals of IPL history. Congratulations to the team and their passionate fanbase - the Yellow Brigade! 🎉🏏

2023.05.29 22:35 adventurepaul E-commerce Industry News - Week of May 29th, 2023

Hi ecommerce - I'm Paul and I follow the e-commerce industry pretty closely for my Shopifreaks E-commerce Newsletter. Each week I post a summary recap of this week's top stories, which I cover in depth in the newsletter. .
  1. STAT OF THE WEEK: 70% of e-commerce shoppers experienced shipping delays without any reason provided by the business for the delay. Faced with that experience, 90% of respondents said they are less likely to buy from a brand again after a poor online shopping experience, while 29% say they are increasingly willing to share a negative review online. – According to Koerber .
  2. If some of Temu's deals appear too good to be true — it's because they are! An analysis of the company's supply chain costs by WIRED shows that Temu is losing an average of $30 per order as it throws money at trying to break into the American market. Most of Temu's subsidies are in the form of free international shipping, with even a small package costing the company around $14 to ship to the US (although it offers the shipping for free). When adding in the additional product discounts and cash coupons that Temu gives to customers, the average loss per order jumps to $30. .
  3. The FTC has proposed new rules in the US called “click to cancel” that will impact e-commerce subscriptions — but in a good way for consumers! The rules would require any business selling subscriptions to add a simple cancel mechanism on the same website as the initial transaction, and include the same number of steps. In other words, a “one click subscription” would require a “one click cancelation.” This “click to cancel” rule is part of the FTC's proposed changes to its 1973 Negative Option Rule, which establishes how subscription sellers must communicate offers, ensure consent, manage billing, and simplify cancellation. .
  4. BigCommerce announced new leadership including the appointment of Daniel Lentz as the company's CFO, Chuck Cassidy as its General Counsel, and Hubert Ban as its Chief Accounting Officer. .
  5. Google is launching Product Studio, a new tool that allows Shopping merchants to quickly edit and customize their product images for free using generative AI. According to Google's data, product listings with more than one image typically see a 76% increase in impressions and a 32% increase in clicks compared to listings with a single image. With the new generative AI tool, text prompts can be used within Product Studio to quickly make visual adjustments to product images, such as generating new backgrounds for seasonal campaigns. The tool also allows sellers to instantly remove the existing background of an image if they need a blank backdrop, and increase the quality of small or low resolution images. .
  6. Morning Consult published their annual report of Most Trusted Brands for 2023. The survey ranks roughly 1,500 brands in the US, most of which were dominated by big, well-established names including: #1 Band-Aid, #2 UPS, #3 Amazon, #4 Lysol, #5 Kleenex, #6 Cheerios, #7 Visa, #8 Dove, #9 The Weather Channel, and #10 FedEx .
  7. Axios, in collaboration with market research firm Harris Poll, also ran a recent survey to determine the Most Reputable Brands in the US. The results were very different from Morning Consult's most trusted brands. Only one company overlapped in the top ten which included: #1 Patagonia, #2 Costco, #3 John Deere, #4 Trader Joe's, #5 Chick-fil-A, #6 Toyota, #7 Samsung, #8 Amazon, #9 USAA, and #10 Apple . Bottom of the list included: #90 Family Dollar, #91 Balenciaga, #92 BP, #93 Bitcoin, #94 TikTok, #95 Spirit Airlines, #96 Meta, #97 Twitter, #98 Fox, #99 FTX, and #100 The Trump Organization .
  8. The latest data from PYMNTS shows that high earners are feeling the pinch of credit card debt and that their wages aren't keeping up with inflation. This is resulting in higher-end retailers who depend on wealthier households feeling the pinch as well. The data shows a number of correlations including that for bouseholds earning more than $100k annually, 42% were living paycheck-to-paycheck in April 2022. That number has crept up to over 49% this past year. .
  9. Netflix must have forgotten what love is since 2017 when it made its famous tweet that “Love is sharing a password.” The company has finally launched its ill-awaited crackdown on password sharing in the US and the UK. The new rules state that subscribers are permitted to share their account with members of their own household, which Netflix defines as “you and the people you live with.” Netflix will begin using a variety of tools, such as IP checking, to spot when people are using another household’s account and prevent them from doing so, or give them the option of adding a household for $7.99/month. The company expects cancellations, but optimistically (or idiotically) predicts that those same people will come back again, which will overall lead to more people paying for subscriptions. .
  10. Laws are changing in Australia to treat BNPL as a credit product. Finally! When was it NOT a form of credit? BNPL should have been recognized as a credit product the day the first BNPL company put up a coming soon landing page. Australia’s Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Stephen Jones said that a litany of issues reported to the Australia Securities and Investments Commission have added up to “unacceptable levels of unaffordable lending occurring, largely concentrated amongst low-income borrowers.” He added that “BNPL looks like credit, it acts like credit, it carries the risks of credit.” Jones promised draft legislation in the coming months and the introduction of a final bill to the Australian Parliament by the end of the year, which will include the need for BNPL firms to hold Australian Credit Licenses and comply with Resonspible Lending Obligations. .
  11. Bill Gates said that AI could kill Google Search and Amazon as we know them, and that the technology could radically alter user behaviors, resulting in people never needing to visit a search website again or use certain productivity or shopping tools. Gates remarked that the first company to develop it will have a leg up on competitors. .
  12. A recent study conducted by Lloyds Banking Group revealed that a UK consumer falls victim to a purchasing scam that originates on Facebook or Instagram every seven minutes, resulting in a cost of over £500k per week. (That man is Michael Scott.) The banking group is now urging Meta and other tech giants to take responsibility and contribute to refunding innocent victims of scams. .
  13. Analysts at Bernstein project that Reliance Industries is poised to outpace Amazon and Flipkart in the race for India's $150M e-commerce market, citing the conglomerate's robust retail network, mobile network, and home field advantage as its biggest assets. Reliance already operates the country's largest retail chain with over 18k stores and is leveraging its presence to form partnerships with Meta, Shein, and other companies as a strategic advantage against its competitors. .
  14. Shopify is introducing its POS hardware to the Canadian market. Its mobile selling device, the POS Go, which is built to run Shopify’s POS software, was first rolled out to retailers in the US in 2022. .
  15. Meta announced that ads in Instagram search results will now be available through the Instagram Marketing API, allowing third-party social-management platforms to offer a new Instagram ad-placement type in their apps. Meta began testing the placement in March and are now opening it up to all brands. .
  16. Shein is exploring plans to build a factory in Mexico as one of its manufacturing hubs outside China, which could shorten shipping time and cut distribution costs for customers in Latin America and USA. Earlier this month I reported that Shein is creating a hub in Brazil. .
  17. Amazon opened the first phase of its Metropolitan Park on Monday, its long-awaited second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia that can hold up to 8k employees. However not all Amazon employees are excited about the new office location (or any office location). At least 1,000 office workers are planning a walkout this Wednesday to take a stand against the company's return-to-office mandate. .
  18. The Vietnamese government is putting pressure on TikTok to police its content and remove videos that fall short of the state’s standards, or risk a ban. Eight government departments are targeting toxic content deemed “to pose a threat to the country’s youth, culture and tradition” — including videos that simply criticize college degrees. .
  19. eBay unveiled generative AI on its mobile app to help sellers list new items for sale, however the company forgot to inform sellers and didn't label the icon. When clicked, the icon replaced sellers' entire product descriptions with AI generated text, with no way to recover the original description. .
  20. Boozt AB, a Sweden-based online fashion retailer, blocked 42,000 customers for returning too many items, calling their actions too costly for the company and the environment. The company said that these particular customers represented less than 2% of their 3M customers, but around 25% of the total return volume. .
  21. Twitter withdrew from an agreement with the EU to cut down misinformation on its social network, which the company joined alongside other tech companies in 2018. Thierry Breton, the EU internal market commissioner, noted that fighting disinformation will be a legal obligation from August 25th, due to the EU's Digital Services Act, so the agreement would become irrelevant. .
  22. Jeff Bezos is ripped now! The Amazon founder started working with personal trainer, Wes Okerson, who's also trained Tom Cruise and Gerard Butler, and now he's gotten super buff. This is about the least e-commerce specific news you'll ever see me share in this newsletter, but the Jeff Bezos before / after photo is kind of wild! .
  23. Amazon will close its official Amazon app store in China on July 17, which launched in 2011 as an alternative to the Google Play Store. Amazon noted that its marketplaces and AWS services will remain operational in China. However while it may be leaving China, the Amazon App Store will soon be bringing more Android apps to the Windows ecosystem. The expanded partnership will allow Windows users to access a wider range of Android apps seamlessly. .
  24. Google updated the badges some merchants display for their product listings in Google Search to say “Top Quality Store” instead of the original “Trusted Store” badge. Google said this is just a name and title change and won't have any impact on search rank or performance. .
  25. Auctane, an e-commerce shipping specialist that operates brands such as Metapack, ShipStation, Packlink, ShipEngine, Stamps.com, and others, appointed Albert Ko as its new CEO, who previously served as CEO of EWS, which is best known for the Zelle payments network. Current CEO Nathan Jones will join the company's Board of Directors. .
  26. eCampus.com, a website that sells textbooks and course materials, announced that it would keep offering textbook rentals, even though its retail partner Amazon was exiting the business. The company had been powering the program behind the scenes for Amazon since 2012, and plans to keep it going through its own website. .
  27. Walmart is partnering with Pawp, a veterinary telehealth provider, to offer Walmart+ subscribers free access to virtual veterinarians for a year, starting this week. Currently Pawp charges $99 for an annual membership. .
  28. Alibaba Group said that it aims to hire 15,000 people this year, dismissing rumors circulating that the company planned to cut 20% of its staff. They also mentioned that more than 3,000 of those hires would be newly-graduated students. .
  29. Plus 7 seed rounds, IPOs, and acquisitions of interest including a $12M Series A round by Laced to grow its resale marketplace for authenticated sneakers.
I hope you find this news recap helpful. See you next week!

2023.05.29 22:07 GreyJediBageutte7 CA-KY layover holidays question

I live in San Diego and my parents have recently moved to a small town in KY, with the nearest airport being Lexington “Blue Grass Airport” which is about 90 minutes away itself. Other nearby airports would be Knoxville, Louisville, Nashville and the furthest and dumbest choice being Cincinnati. The prices are only ever so slightly cheaper at the airports other than Lexington, sometimes as low as a $50 difference, yet adding a minimum of an hour of driving time. Therefore I wanna stick to flying into Lexington. There’s not a lot of selection for airlines. Southwest doesn’t go to blue grass at all, and the only “cheap” airline is Allegiant which would only have Vegas as a layover, and might not even fly on the same day. That leaves the big three to choose from. Delta almost doesn’t show up in the results, costs more and I don’t have good memories from when I’ve previously flown on them. United charges nearly double what American would in theory.
Now supposedly starting in September United Express will fly from Denver all the way to Lexington. I’m not sure if this will bring United’s prices down a bit, or do nothing and it would be a horrible flight in December on a tiny plane. Almost all the regular flights are either American (both full and Eagle) thru DFW, or Chicago, and United thru Chicago. I’ve heard nothing but horror stories about O’hare, and being December I’m afraid of being canceled for weather reasons. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve had a layover in DFW, and it was bad back then, but that was including customs coming back from London and having to recheck bags and such. I recently flew on both United and American and the service on American has improved dramatically, while United flight attendants are still as unfriendly as ever. The problem with the DFW option, is the layovers are all really short, 40 minutes each way. I pretty much know everyone will say that’s not nearly enough time especially around the holidays and almost certainly having to change terminals.
I know it’s not even quite June yet, but the prices are already high, my parents are desperate for a visit, and my budget isn’t the greatest, and I wanna avoid missing a connection and avoid weather delays as much as possible. There’s not many American options for Chicago, unless I pay a lot more, same for Charlotte I believe. Almost all options are tight connections in DFW, or United thru O’hare. Not sure which poison to pick.

Training
This was my first marathon. I have previously run 5 half-marathons, the first being in 2018. I signed up for the Saskatchewan Marathon because I had been selected in the Chicago Marathon lottery and I wanted to have at least one marathon completed before Chicago. I liked the idea of training for a spring marathon before Chicago in the fall, and this is a relatively local event, so it seemed practical to run the Saskatchewan Marathon as my very first.
Winter in Saskatchewan is brutal, I had to log a lot of kilometres on my treadmill. I also had to replace the track on my treadmill at one point, thankfully the weather outside was mild enough at that time (only about -10C, or about 14F) that I could do long-ish runs outside when I needed to. I didn’t follow any particular training plan, but rather I read various marathon training plans and sort of pieced together a mileage plan that I felt I could achieve. I never fully reached my mileage goals. I was planning to hit 80+ kilometres in my peak week, but my highest weekly mileage was only 71.9km. Not a big deal, this is my first marathon and I was asking a lot of my body. I had also contracted Covid for the first time at the end of March, but surprisingly it didn’t set me too far back on my training. Overall, I was happy with how my training went, and I have a lot of things to build on for this fall.
Pre-race
I drove up to Saskatoon the day before the race. Supper of the night before the race was a vermicelli noodle bowl from a Vietnamese restaurant with some fresh rolls to start. I also bought some cupcakes from a local bakery. The morning of the race I had some cereal that I brought from home, coffee from the hotel room, and a banana. As someone who sleeps poorly at the best of times, I actually managed a decent night sleep in the hotel. This was about as good as it was ever gonna get before the race.
Race
The race started at 7:00 AM. The weather at the start was about 13C (about 55F) and overcast, which I felt was pretty perfect (I actually would’ve liked it to have been a bit cooler). It remained cloudy throughout the run, which was also ideal in my opinion. It had rained overnight and was still a bit humid, so the cooler weather prevented things from getting uncomfortable. We have also been dealing with a lot of smoke from wildfires over the past few weeks. The air quality at times had been at hazardous levels. Thankfully the air quality conditions on race day were much improved as well.
I kept telling myself to not go out too fast at the start. I really didn’t intend to. But it was hard to not get swept up in the initial adrenaline run. It also seemed that a lot of slower runners were lined up near the front of the chute, and people were quite packed near the starting line, so I had to start a little further back than I would have liked. I think my initial adrenaline rush and urge to get out in front of the slower runners contributed to pushing a little harder at the start. I don’t think it hurt the race too much, but I hope I can level out some of the splits in my next marathon.
The first few kilometres are largely downhill. Much of the race is spent running along the South Saskatchewan River, but you start up on a hill. This also means that coming back to the finish line is mostly uphill. The first 10km felt great, due largely to fresh-legs and the downhill course. The remainder of the initial first-half of the marathon wasn’t too bad, but you do have to climb partly back up the hill, because the course essentially has you run up and down the river twice. It is also notable that I set a personal best time in the half-marathon in the first-half of the race. I anticipated that this would happen, because I’m in much better shape than I was the last time I ran a half-marathon, but it was not a goal I had for this race.
My longest training run before this event was exactly 30.0km. Running past that 30km marker was a whole new world to me. I had always heard the real marathon starts with the last 10km remaining. This would become painfully true. All the aches I had been feeling were amplified. My legs were cramping to the point I was afraid it might derail my race. Everything did ultimately hold out for me, but it never got easier. With 10km to go my paces were slowing, and then there was the dreaded overall climb back up to the finish line. I was continually doing the math in my head to see where I needed to be in order to come in under the 3:30-mark. At one point I thought the goal time had slipped away, and I was telling myself it was okay because this was the first marathon. But with about 5km to go, I figured I could make it if I kept the splits under 5:30/km. This became my focus. I tried to stay out of my head and just focus on running steady. As the finish line got closer, I kept saying to myself “just 10 more minutes of this”… “5 more minutes”… then it was over. I was pretty overwhelmed crossing the finish line, so much hard work and anticipation, and I did it.
Post-race
As soon as I crossed, I got my medal and walked over to my partner. My legs were cramping fast to the point that walking was very painful and difficult. I also felt pretty nauseous, I think largely due to all of the sugary gels and fruit bars I had eaten during the run (roughly 1 energy gel/fruit bar per 5km). I don’t want to even look at a GU energy gel for a looong time. I got some post-race food, a coffee, and then headed back to the hotel for a warm shower.
Made with a new race report generator created by herumph.
Edits: formatting, I fixed it the best I can... lol.

2023.05.29 18:18 Pips54 Am I right? Harsh? Or plain wrong?

Will keep it short and snappy! Wife and I are both 30 and fairly healthy. I wanted to take our daughter (4 months) for a long walk in a beautiful forest nearby. After 25 minutes wife asks " how long is this gonna be" and that she couldn't breastfeed her because once out she won't wanna go back in the pram.
In my view, it is a non issue. You can feed her and I'll burp and carry her until she's sleepy and then return to pram if we fancy it. Wife just shuts it down so we have to turn back.
This really upsets me as in my view you should take every day as it comes with our baby. We were prepared with changing bag, we weren't tired, weather good etc. No other issues going on. She is at baby classes everyday with her, goes to friends etc. (All by car as in country)
I want to do what I love with my wife and baby girl (enjoy nature). Not sure how hard I should push if at all. For context this is a trend it's not just today. Mainly relates to travelling to a place further than 15 mins away.

2023.05.29 18:01 lissakristine Standing up for myself and possibly dodging a bullet in the process

Apologies in advance for not using the correct flair. I wasn't sure which one to pick.

I'm currently looking for a new job as MB is pregnant and will be taking at least a year off when the baby comes. On Friday, I had a last-minute phone interview for a position.
9 am to 3 pm Monday-Friday caring for a 15-month-old. The family also has an 11-year-old, but he'll be in school during those hours [we did not discuss the plans for when he's home. At 11, however, it's not a huge concern of mine since at the age of 11, I was already babysitting other kids].
The family currently has a "sitter" who is leaving to start her full-time career. This sitter takes the toddler out of the house at around 9 am, and they stay out until close to 1 pm (eating lunch and snacks on the go). Typically, they spend all day out at parks or at the Zoo (I'm assuming they have a pass, though the SITTER may have the pass, and the kid gets in for free because she's under 2. It wouldn't surprise me if NF isn't paying for the zoo). While this is fine on nice days, it seems like a LOT to keep a toddler out of the house and entertained for 4-5 hours a day when the weather is poor.
The first red flag occurred when it was revealed that I don't drive my NKs. They're 2 and 4, and when I started the job in 2022, things were still a bit more restricted than they are today. (We had Covid my second week of work). There's been no need to drive my NKs anywhere. There's plenty to do within walking distance when the weather is nice, and the kids are also content to play at home or in their backyard. Potential MB (PMB) sounded almost offended at the idea that I don't drive the kids. [Looking back, I wonder if she suspects it's because there's a reason in my driving history.]
Then, it came up that the family only owns one car, so I'd have to use my vehicle to drive NK around. Unfortunately, I've gotten conflicting information about what my car insurance will cover regarding using my vehicle for work, so I prefer NOT to use my car to transport kids. (At this time, I'm not really in a position to change insurance companies). This is typically something that scares employers away. Most of them don't even ask about insurance coverage, but I bring it up because I will only drive kids around if I have the proper coverage. I can only afford to pay out of pocket if I significantly increase my rates (which are already too low).
But the family seemed to agree to discuss paying for the insurance coverage. That's when I learned that NK takes a nap at 2:45 pm after a bath. (Parents alternate WFH days, so I'd be free to go after NK is asleep). I have no problem giving kids baths, but it's not something I've done often because most families I've worked for don't do baths during the day, and most parents, in my experience, opt to skip a PM bath if it's a babysitter night. My concern is the late naptime. In my experience, the only time I've had a kid with a nap that late was when they were still on two naps (say a 10am nap and a 2:30-3pm nap). I wonder if she's dropped that morning nap and is down to 1 nap now, but that second nap wasn't adjusted to accommodate. Now, it's possible that she just sleeps in later and that schedule works, but I feel it's more likely that they want to push that nap out later because it's more convenient/cheaper to have a sitter from 9-3, and have baby nap for those last 2 hours of the work day than it is to have someone from 9-5 because baby is napping from 1-3.
So, I was already hesitant on the job when the subject of pay came up. PMB seemed confused about the idea of paying on the books and gave the line that she'd "look into it" which often leads to no response or agreeing to give a 1099. When I told her my rates started at $25/hour (I have over 20 years of childcare experience and live in a HCOL area and $25/hour at 40 hours isn't enough to afford an apartment around here, so my rates are already low), she was confused. Apparently, she saw $15-17 an hour on my Sittercity profile. She tried to talk me into lowering my rates, but I was firm that $25/hour was as low as I'd go.
Despite all this, we agreed to schedule an in-person interview. She wanted to do it Sunday, but I do not work Sundays and was very firm on it, despite her constantly trying to negotiate a different time. [I am busy until close to 5pm most Sundays with church activities, and then I need the evening, so I don't have much room to negotiate. I am available other days, but not Sunday].
So, we agreed to meet today at 2pm. This was at 7pm on Friday. It is now almost 12pm on Monday and I haven't heard from her about an address. I'm starting to suspect that she decided NOT to go with me when there are people out there who are willing to accept $15/hour cash.
And given the job description and the fact that she uses the word "sitter" (which I've noticed is code for "I undervalue and underpay my employees), I'm not too heartbroken about it.

2023.05.29 16:16 sunnynihilist Going to Chamonix for the first time...hope you don't mind if you can answer some questions?

I checked the weather forecast for next week. It was rainy all week. Is it accurate? Any chance for sunshine for a couple od days? Is it normal that it rains all week in the Chamonix area?
I thought about taking the Mont Blanc Express at Servoz station. I know the MBE terminates at Martigny, but I am not particularly interested in the city. I am mostly interested in the alpine scenery. What station should I take off instead of Martigny, because I don't want to waste time taking the train all the way to Martigny? (Train schedule here)
I suppose I should buy the day pass, which is cheaper than buying round-trip tickets?
Thanks so much in advance.

2023.05.29 15:48 intersecting_lines +EV Homer Plays for today => +13.7% EV KC MJ Melendez (+520 FD) • +7% EV COL Nolan Jones (+800 FD) • +3% EV NYY Aaron Judge (+235 FD)

What is +EV betting. tldr, one of the only ways to be profitable in the long term betting on home runs since home run lines are usually juiced to the tits. You basically are trying to find sportsbooks and markets that have mispriced odds in the bettors favor. You aren't looking into stats, pitching matchups, weather, or ballpark rankings. As ActionNetwork puts it
EV betting is not about what you think will happen, but about an advantage you have over the implied probabilities of bets by using lines and information sportsbooks are already giving you
I use a devigger to remove the sportsbooks vig and to calculate +EV against a sharp book like bet365. I choose bet365 because it has one of the lowest vigs on home runs out of all sportsbooks and is widely popular. This is what the smartest people look for in the dinger tuesday threads to ensure profitability over the long-term.
These aren't guarantees, these guys are NOT likely to home run on a given day, but if you take enough +EV plays over a long period of time, you should end up profitable. My record since starting posting: 13W-49L (+17.40u)
My Picks (I take all +EV plays for $5. I'm posting the odds I got them at...make sure to check odds because lines move fast on fanduel HRs)
13.7% EV: KC Mj Melendez +520 FD vs bet365 +360/-500. Implied = 18.3% 7.0% EV: COL Nolan Jones +800 FD vs bet365 +550/-850. Implied = 11.9% 7.0% EV: OAK Jj Bleday +800 FD vs bet365 +550/-850.
