Constantly feel like I walk on eggshells around my mother.. I don’t quite no how to explain it, if I’m honest. Every time she tells me, someone I knew from school is either pregnant or moved out, it makes me feel like I’m not good enough for her since I’m stuck at home playing video games while I’m job hunting for stuff. I’m just tired of it all now. No matter what goals I try and achieve in life or what I plan on doing next her answers are always like “cool..” or “ok” with disinterested tone, she seems more interested in what other people’s kids are doing than what my plans are for the future. She always makes me feel constantly on edge especially when she’s in a bad mood.

I [26m] quit smoking 2 weeks ago, and before then had been smoking everyday for about 6 years. Now, I have nightmares every night. Some of them more vivid and realistic than others, but nightmares nonetheless. Before I quit, I couldn’t even tell you the last time I had a dream; in fact I would kinda brag about being someone who “never dreams,” because my nights would go by very quickly. I would fall asleep and wake up seemingly immediately, and it would already be morning. I liked it that way.
Now, I dread falling asleep and it takes me usually a couple hours to actually do so. And tonight I woke up from a dream where not only did my ex-gf expose me for a pretty humiliating incident, but then an old friend-turned-enemy found me and got in my car to beat the shit out of me. I woke up with a migraine that strongly resembled how the dude had been hitting me. I even had to check in the mirror for bruises and a black eye, but there was nothing there. I only slept for about 2 hours, and I don’t plan on getting any more sleep tonight.
I’ve read and heard from others about how smoking everyday or right before bed can affect your brains ability to get REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is where most dreams occur. So I’m not necessarily surprised that I started dreaming again. But I’m more worried about what will happen if these nightmares never stop. They’re always very different, and almost never about the same things or people.
I originally quit smoking because a friend of mine that I play games online with everyday convinced me to quit with him, because “it’ll be easier if we do it together,” which is true. It was easier to quit knowing he was quitting too, and that I’d have someone to bounce side-effects off of and process the pros and cons of quitting. However, when I first told him I’d been having nightmares, he told me he “hadn’t really started dreaming again yet.” We’re supposed to make it a month or two (depending on how we feel after month one) without smoking, and I still want to do that. the pros I’ve experienced while I’m awake include faster thinking, better short-term memory, and more confidence. So I don’t really want to lose the progress I’ve made with those things.
I guess my main question is has anyone else experienced this before, and if so, how long did it take for the nightmares to cease, and is it worth it if I plan on going back to smoking in another couple of weeks? Thanks.

 | I hope that Sissy’s finished appearance is closer to her concept art than it appeared to be in the footage of her from the tech test. I didn’t personally run into her during my time playing but I did see her in a few streams and she’s did not at all look like her concept art or the model that her appearance is based off of. Her hair is blonde and more neat and has no loose hairs in the front (the messy brown hair was much cuter and more playful) and her face is more angular than it was supposed to be. I’m not really concerned about what her dress looks like as I’m sure we’ll get more dresses for her (hopefully an outfit with shoes?) but it was said that she was supposed to have a unique beauty like the model that she is supposed to look like, yet she doesn’t look like the model or her concept art in game. I've never been the type into exercise. I feel lost and super conscious in a gym + money issues now so I can't afford membership + space issues.
I love walking but only when I am already out and walking. The "let's go out and walk" is the hard part.
RANT PARAGRAPH YOU CAN SKIP: Actually, the "let's go and do something productive" has always been the hardest. I broke down and couldn't do thesis work 8 years ago and got diagnosed with depression because of that. The fear of failure, the excessive self-critique, the trauma of being shamed in front of peers in the academe. In hindsight I should have gone to therapy, instead, I got a psychiatrist who gave me pills. None worked to get my ass up and do the work for my thesis coz I was still stuck in unresolved dark thoughts. I went through a whole list of different antidepressants and all their brands. I kid you not, my doc was so irresponsible. He said it was sooo safe. I can cycle through his list and find what's right with me. Anyways, Covid lockdown happened which was NOT good for anyone's mental health. I went face to face with the topic of mortality. My parents' mortality and my own. That's when I got prescribed benzos by another new, irresponsible psych doc. On top of max dosage of 2 antidepressants. For ~3 years. Still no thesis.
Sorry for the rant above. The rain/flooding season has started here. I have another "excuse" to not go outside. My cardio exercise/outside activity that is free, is in danger. So I am really feeling down now.
I am looking at Leslie Sansone walking indoors videos but I have this difficulty pushing myself to start.
I am extra annoyed and sad because I feel like I am too soft. My gut has been gurgling in anxiety because I NEED to exercise. Now. Daily. Probably forever. It's the same block I feel for my thesis. Argh.

None worked to get my ass up and do the work for my thesis coz I was still stuck in unresolved dark thoughts. I went through a whole list of different antidepressants and all their brands. I kid you not, my doc was so irresponsible. He said it was sooo safe. I can cycle through his list and find what's right with me. Anyways, Covid lockdown happened which was NOT good for anyone's mental health. I went face to face with the topic of mortality. My parents' mortality and my own. That's when I got prescribed benzos by another new, irresponsible psych doc. On top of max dosage of 2 antidepressants. For ~3 years. Still no thesis.
Sorry for the rant above. The rain/flooding season has started here. I have another "excuse" to not go outside. My cardio exercise/outside activity that is free, is in danger. So I am really feeling down now.
I am looking at Leslie Sansone walking indoors videos but I have this difficulty pushing myself to start.
I am extra annoyed and sad because I feel like I am too soft. My gut has been gurgling in anxiety because I NEED to exercise. Now. Daily. Probably forever. It's the same block I feel for my thesis. Argh.

AI risk is real and doomers have some good points. I wanted to write down some things that I think would help contribute to a more serious conversation about AI. These points are supposed to address what I think are the main, underlying causes of friction between skeptics and people who are extremely worried about AI. If we acknowledge these points, I think we can have more productive conversations about AI risk.

- 1) Acknowledge that there are many different kinds of AI, and the really risky and strange one is autonomous agents with goal functions
- The word AI is overused nowadays. There is a massive difference between functions which map from one input to another and autonomous agents with bodies or control over systems and a goal to pursue.
- The former does not present unprecedented, existential challenges. It's the reinforcement learning stuff that's really dangerous.
- An enormous amount of the benefit of AI comes from the former. Medical AI doesn't really need autonomous agents - treatment discovery and neural network powered diagnostics would revolutionize our world
- Any conversation about AI safety should have a narrow description of the type of AI, and we should never mix different types of AI when doing cost-benefit analysis. The enormous benefits of drug discovery AI shouldn't be weighed against the risks of a Boston Dynamics patrol dog. It would be wrong for one of those to lead to the enablement or banning of the other.
- 2) Acknowledge that AI and automation are not totally unprecedented
- People from an engineering background know that we have had full automation of jobs for decades now.
- There are entire manufacturing facilities run by a computer system. They are safe, well controlled and well understood.
- We've also seen the economic story play out (again over decades).
- It's annoying when people talk about AI and automation risk as if we've never done this before. We have, and the experience of the automation of the secondary sector should always be brought in as a foil in discussing the automation of white collar work.
- And to our ancient ancestors, even the concept of a large society run by other humans such that you don't collect your own water, energy or food would be indistinguishable from computational automation - we have already dealt with the problem of building massive, autonomous systems which run our lives and mostly don't kill us.
- 3) Bring in ideas and thinkers from other disciplines besides Computer Science / Programming
- Discipline siloes lead to shoddy thinking and reinventing the wheel, e.g. renaming things between ML and stats
- Tech people sometimes talk as if they can 'grok' entire disciplines related to a problem as a side quest on building their programs
- Here is a list of disciplines which people should familiarize themselves with first, before describing 'alignment' as an unprecedented challenge:
- Control Engineering - These are the guys who automated the secondary sector safely.
- Mechanism Design - There is actually a discipline of study which looks at precisely the question of how to design rules for games which necessarily implement only positive and efficient outcomes. It's basically inverse game theory. Economics in general is useful for coming up with schemes and incentives that don't blow up even if nobody really controls it directly.
- Game Theory, Political Theory and Military Strategy - There's lots of interesting history about how to build and interact with systems which are way bigger than you, way more complex and how to constrain the negatives.
- Physics - Physics is the ultimate constraint in the universe, and so we would have to use physics to constrain autonomous agents. Again, a lot of us think we 'grok' physics as a side-quest to getting our Comp Sci degree, but it's often a lot more nuanced than even STEM majors understand.
- Cryptography - Even within computer science, there are people who study the problem of designing algorithmic games which are unsolvable in a bad way.
- 4) Before we optimize the goal function of AI, we should optimize the goal function of the people developing AI - we have to talk about AI as a social construct (urgh... yes, I know...)
- This could've gone under the previous section
- For example, one could really challenge the notion that we ever need to develop superintelligent autonomous agents
- STEM people think of technological progress as imperative, but that's more of a social construct or cultural belief rather than mathematical truth. We don't have to progress infinitely in any particular direction. We just don't. Look at the Concorde.
- History of Technology, and, more generally Humanities of Technology, should be taught in STEM. STEM people have to stop seeing themselves and their projects as existing outside of the foibles of being human. I think that produces more thoughtful people. And I'm so tired of the Luddites being the go to example for absolutely everything. It's cliche. There is so much more material out there.
