Hello All! I'm doing some basic polling and playtesting with an option I'm about 50/50 on for my game Project Chimera: E.C.O. currently in alpha development.
Basic information:
Players take on the role of a black ops super soldier working for a PMSC (Chimera Group International). The game heavily focuses on stealth and social objective completion over combat, ie, there is no incentive for combat, it's a way to achieve an objective, but it's the worst ROI since it is potentially lethal and consumes resources much faster than other methods and doesn't offer special rewards, also there's not really "loot" per se like in a DnD game. Loot is most likely to be information that advances the plot.
The game is crunchy, while easy to learn the core game loops (there's a 1 page overview that will get any experienced RPer able to sit for their first session and 3 points of entry: pregen, table roll/select, and full custom) it's mostly that it has lots of flexibility and character options, which is great for players that want that, but it's a known limitation it will not appeal to rules light/casual gamer preferred experiences.
The game takes place in a five minutes into the future dystopian mirror alt earth with cyberpunk and sci fi elements. Characters have access to things like advanced training, gear, bionics, psionics, super powers, feats, etc. A character's starting template doesn't restrict them, it just figures out their initial boosted areas, ie if you take the bionics aspect, your character will have more bionics than a general build character, you can still access everything else, but it's more a question of where you want the thematic focus of the character to be. All characters are baseline competent in the areas of stealth, socialization, survival and gunplay/combat (you absolutely can use HTH and melee with extensive options, but as one might expect, guns are usually more effective, though those options definitely have their place).As such consider these things to be relevant to potential players, ie if you hate stealth/social, prefer rules light casual, opinions are less relevant in this case because it's not a game built for that kind of player.
The Actual Concern:
Currently I'm considering removing the concept of a critical hit in combat doing double damage automatically and there's a good amount of relevant information:
The concept works like this:
Characters have 4 meta currencies, one of them is called Essence.
This is a daily regen pool and is used for "enhanced performance" of some kind. Presently it can be used for things like a small bonus to a roll for a save, or gaining +1 standard action on a turn, remove a level of exhaustion, rally, etc., the point being it does have a level of utility. It might be also be used to fuel a special ability from a feat, augment a powepsionic, allow for a special application move, etc.
Crits occur in combat (skills can also crit) similar to PF2e in that you can gain one on a nat 20 or if you exceed the TN by 10+ (in most cases, there are other ways to finagle this but they are niche).
Essence is described in game as:
Essence represents the total abstract humanity of a character as well as their general combined physical and mental well being, focus, and general willpower. It is utilized to overcome general limitations and perform above expectations. Essence is most commonly associated with the concept of the superego.
The proposed change would be a character gains 1 essence (up to max pool, this can be spent immediately if it exceeds) on a crit, but double damage would cost 2 essence.
A typical early level character is likely to have somewhere around 10-20 essence total in the pool (could be more or less but this is an estimated average).
Some positives of this proposed change:
This provides another opportunity for essence regen for players.
This provides additional utility and tactical choice in combat (ie they might opt for double damage and spend the extra, bank it, apply a status effect instead, etc.), particularly because more damage is not always a preferred option. In many cases disabling an opponent quickly and without drawing attention is preferred over killing them, and in some cases capturing a target alive is the mission itself.
This can open up other combat applications for essence use.
Some negatives of the proposed change:
Adding a player choice here can slow down combat for indecisive players.
This puts more emphasis/reward on combat, which isn't really the intent of the game. Essence is easier to earn in game in other ways, but adding incentive in combat assumes that this is a reward for player behavior, when open combat is, by design, meant to be more of an "oops, we screwed up moment". With that said, characters are black ops super soldiers so the game is less about never being in combat and more about trying to stave off combat as much as possible and if you have to enter combat, doing so with control of the battlefield in a smart and tactical manner.
This requires additional book keeping. Not a whole lot, we already have to track essence use, but we now have to consider that it will fluctuate more often (as part of combat).
Why I'm split:
The game is built and meant to be focused on providing experiences other than combat (ie the goal is to get as far away from typical game loop of "punch monster until it drops loot" as possible), but it would be fair to say it also has extremely robust options and tactical choice for combat. To be clear, the combat is highly tactical and has more moves available in and out of combat than probably any other known game on the market, but it's also not meant to appeal specifically to "combat only players" and the system design directly reflects this.Basically my design values are in a bit of conflict here.
Obviously I'll play test this regardless, but I'm curious about:
Are there additional reasons foagainst this?
Given the premises of the game, which do you think is likely to be more fun for you specifically? For the type of gamer this game is meant to appeal to? Why?

first off, i’m sorry in advance for posting so much in here. this place has been so lovely to vent & just tell Keegan’s story. it makes the loss feel a tiny bit less unbearable hearing all your stories as well. although i’d never wish this on anyone
Keegan passed away, rather suddenly, on June 1. i have detailed posts on my page of the timeline of events if anyone is interested in hearing more. i also wanted to link Keegan’s last report from the ER in case there’s anyone else out there who finds some relief in seeing and hearing what happened from a strictly scientific/veterinary standpoint, emotions aside. it looks like a scammy link but it’s the easiest way to share a PDF file: https://beige-franny-63.tiiny.site
the biggest questions i’m grappling with nearly a week and half later are, how & why?
how did this happen? Keegan was in incredible shape with no known cancers, ailments, etc. (besides some arthritis). hours before he started feeling unwell, he was 100% himself. and i can’t exaggerate that enough. how could in less than 20 hours could he go from just your typical senior dog to having to be put down?
if you don’t want to or haven’t read the report, essentially the neurologist was highly suspicious of a tumor within his brain that ruptured and was the cause of his rapid decline, & passing.
typing that out seems too surreal. he had a tumor in his brain that ruptured? how? even more head scratching (from my perspective of thinking he was indestructible) was he exhibited no symptoms, beyond PU/PD (excess thrust and urination) that we got treated by an internal specialist. from suspected Cushing’s disease, to diabetes insipidus, to chalking it up to “psychogenic reasons” (i.e, behavioral / mental health). we found a solution that worked. they were called DDAVP eyedrops that really gave him and us such a better quality of life these past ~2 years of his life.
but beyond that, he never showed any signs of the tumor. no seizures, no weakness in limbs, no abnormal behaviors, NOTHING! we spent Memorial Day weekend (just mere days before) walking him in parks, taking him on a picnic without an ounce of worry something was wrong.
so how could he got from his happy, curious, lovey self to death so suddenly? i did speak to his neurologist & she explained that the growth likely grew too large or even ruptured and basically led to a rapid decline. but just like that? one second he’s fine and the next it’s ruptured? i know she’s the expert who spent hundreds of thousands of dollar on her education and dedicated her life to animals, even more so with a speciality in neurology, but it just seems so unfair. and maybe because he was (and still is) the center of universes, it’ll always seem unfair. he likely couldn’t survive through an MRI or potential radiation and we had to end his suffering.
and my next question is, why? why did it have to end like this? he was 16 and lived a beautiful, long life, but we weren’t done yet. we had so much planned for the summer and beyond. why did the tumor have to rupture/bleed/spread them? he didn’t deserve that. i always thought about the end of his life as he got older in an anticipatory way, but NEVER in my life would i suspect this is how and why’d he’d go.
i know i should listen to the doctors. i spoke to his neurologist, his primary doc, a different ER doc, and even a few vets on here who have the same conclusion— there’s nothing you could’ve done more. but for some reason, i cannot accept that answer. is it my grief? probably yeah, but i feel like i have to keep chasing the answer, for him. you might think “well you have your answer right?” and logic says yes, but my heart is thinking something else had to have happened. it couldn’t be a brain tumor that was seemingly dormant for nearly 2 years. it just doesn’t add up, right?
idk, i feel like i’m losing it and everyone in my life has to keep giving me reassurance. but this vicious cycle of guilt, regret, & “what ifs” is eating me alive. i am seeking professional help to help navigate this & also am starting a support group later this week. i’m trying my best, but truthfully nothing will be able to satisfy this hole in my heart and soul. with every fiber of my being, i love Keegan so much and always will, until the day i go. i just need him to know we did everything we could for him and i hope he doesn’t feel like we failed him.

- Peg immigration levels to available housing at the Federal and Province levels now!
- Significantly increase taxes on Airbnb properties as they remove housing from Canadian Citizens and residents
- The Federal government should use its crown land to build new houses. Canadians pay for the house to be built (this keeping the building industry happy), and the government leases the land to the new home owner at a realistic rate. Naturally, good public transport to these new regions would be better for the earth and economy. Imagine giving folks who are first home buyers this chance to get a head start in life.
- Heavily tax people who are using houses and land banks, leaving homes sitting empty
- And most importantly - Limit the number of houses (not condos) that any individual or company can buy. We need to keep corporations with access to AI from buying all the available residential """""land"""""" up and destroying the middle class dream.

I'm just now getting into game dev, like JUST now, so this may be a stupid question. I have a basic understanding of what file compression is but I want to know the whys and why-nots. For example when redownloading Elden ring the download is 46.7 GB and the installed game is 48.1 GB, what is the point of the less than 2 GB of file compression? Why do some devs seem to avoid any kind of file compression like the plague, it's something I have seen people getting upset about online, when referring to obnoxiously large game files, but I'm assuming there has to be more to it than pure laziness on the dev's part like people make it out to be. If this is not an easily answerable question could someone at least point me in the direction of a good learning resource?

At the base, Hatom is a liquidity protocol. Two of the most important elements of @HatomProtocol will be the decentralized lending market and liquid staking module. Those two features aim to radically change the way we are using #MultiversX. It can be seen as a combination of Lido and Aave. @HatomProtocol act as a decentralized bank and will offer liquid staking advantages to users on #MultiversX. It aims to resolve the lack of #DeFi products on this chain and increase the overall liquidity. It is no surprise that #MultiversX needs a suite of products to ignite the long-awaited DeFi era. With a place where users can borrow funds and also get liquidity while securing the network, @HatomProtocol seems to have immense potential. Let's delve into its modules 👇 🅑. You can think about this module as a decentralized bank. Why would someone supply its tokens to the lending protocol? This process works exactly line in the real life with the banks. A bank customer will deposit money into a saving account that is paying a certain APR. The bank then uses the funds to accrue a higher return on that sum than what they are paying to the customer. With @HatomProtocol, the lender will receive rewards from the borrowers. The APR is not fixed and it all depends on the utilization rate of the funds. It's an easy process to gain more rewards on your crypto bags without providing liquidity and having impermanent loss risk. On the other hand, a borrower will need to deposit the assets into the lending protocol and activate them as collateral. Once they do that, the collateral can be used to get a loan, based on a certain loan-to-value which depends on the asset criteria. Once you delegate your tokens to a validator, they are locked up for a certain period of time. During this time, you cannot sell or trade your tokens, which means your assets are illiquid. @HatomProtocol aims to resolve this issue by creating the liquid staking module. Users will be able to stake their $EGLD directly into the dApp and receive a receipt token called $sEGLD ( staked $EGLD ). $sEGLD is a liquid asset and can be used in other protocols while earning rewards from staking. In liquid staking, stakers don't receive additional $sEGLD over time. Instead, the value of their existing $sEGLD increases algorithmically based on the liquid staking APY. The lending protocol and liquid staking module will work very close together. The fees earned by the project from the liquid staking will be used to bootstrap organically the money markets of the lending protocol. There will be no inflation of the HTM token to incentivize users Liquid staking is the new hot narrative in DeFi and will have a humongous impact on the ecosystem liquidity. In isolated pools, such a drop only affects that specific pool's participants. 🛠️ Customization Each pool can have its own interest rates, collateral requirements, and other parameters, which can be tailored to the specific characteristics of the asset or pair of assets in the pool. 🎯 Asset Specificity Isolated lending pools enable users to lend and borrow less liquid or volatile assets, which might be too risky for shared pools. 🔄 Greater Choice for Users With isolated lending pools, users can choose to participate in the pools that best match their risk tolerance and investment strategy. They can opt for pools with more stable, well-established assets, or they can choose pools with volatile assets. @HatomProtocol will generate revenue from the set-up fees of each isolated lending protocol and from a percentage of their revenues. A portion of the revenues generated will be transferred to the staking module and distributed to $HTM token stakers. 🅒. This can potentially provide users with an additional layer of returns on their holdings. 🔄 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆 Htokens can be traded on established decentralized exchanges, providing users with liquidity and the opportunity to earn from trading gains. 💵 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 You can also use HTokens to mint algorithmic stablecoins, such as HatomUSD ( $USH ), providing a further utility and potential source of yield for Htoken holders. 2️⃣. 𝗟𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘀 @HatomProtocol will bring to life more derivatives of $EGLD token. The value of $sEGLD accrues interest following the liquid staking APY, which means that $sEGLD equals $EGLD plus the staking rewards accumulated. In a concept akin to HTokens, the quantity of $sEGLD in the wallet won't increase. However, the exchange rate will progressively rise in line with the liquid staking rewards that the position accumulates over time. ➡ $𝗛𝘀𝗘𝗚𝗟𝗗 This is the token that you will receive when providing $sEGLD to the lending protocol. This reward-bearing version of $EGLD will not only receive the staking rewards but also the rewards from the lending protocol. If you are looking to increase the rewards even further, $HsEGLD can be activated as collateral and earn additional rewards. Must be noted that once it's activated as collateral, it will be sent from your wallet to @HatomProtocol and you can't use it anymore. ➡ $𝘅𝗘𝗚𝗟𝗗 Well, here is where the fun stuff begins. $xEGLD is a leveraged liquid staking position that can earn up to 3 times more rewards than normal staking. But how is this even possible and what are the risks? Before I even start talking about it, it's mandatory to say that the @HatomProtocol team managed to create quite a unique concept similar to flashloans, called trusted loans. These trusted loans offer the possibility to create or break $xEGLD without relying on a third party. I won't get into the process behind the trusted loans as this probably needs a thread on its own. Let's discover how $xEGLD is actually built to achieve that incredible APY 👇 Everything starts with the user depositing $EGLD to be converted into $xEGLD. The smart contract is calculating the total position that can be built with that amount. It then proceeds to take a trusted loan of X $EGLD and then stake it to receive $sEGLD. The $sEGLD received will then be deposited into the lending protocol, activated as collateral and a loan will be taken against it. The loan will then be used to pay the trusted loan of X $EGLD that was borrowed to build this position. In essence, $xEGLD is a looped version of $sEGLD by depositing $sEGLD, taking a loan of $EGLD, staking it into a staking module, doing this over and over again. It saves a lot of time, fees, and hassle by automating it. All the liquid staking tokens will have their own pools on @ash_swap and can be used in other DeFi strategies to increase the yield. You can also pass the cooldown period by selling your $sEGLD, $HsEGLD, or $xEGLD on DEXes. 𝗛𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗨𝗦𝗗 ( $𝗨𝗦𝗛 ) $USH will be the first decentralized over-collateralized stablecoin on #MultiversX. It will be a native token minted directly on the chain with no bridge involved. What utilities lie behind $USH? 🚀 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗟𝗣𝘀 $USH can significantly bootstrap liquidity providers on the #MultiversX ecosystem. 🏁𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 It adds more competition to the stablecoin borrowing market, potentially leading to better rates and terms for borrowers. 🛡️ 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 $USH can be used as collateral to borrow from the lending protocol, providing additional liquidity while earning interest. 🌾 𝗬𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 $USH can be shaped into structured products to earn more yields. Lending protocols, farms, and vaults are the go-to places if you want to earn interest using your $USH. $USH it's designed to be a powerful product of @HatomProtocol. It will be minted using HTokens activated as collateral into the lending protocol. $USH will be used in different LPs with the goal to bootstrap the liquidity across the chain. $USH will come with some interesting features such as staking to receive $sUSH that can be used in different DeFi applications. As with trusted loans, this is a subject that requires a thread on its own and I will have them as quickly as possible once the overview is done. As it doesn't rely on any bridges, there are fewer risks associated with it. The interest accrued from $USH minters will be directed to the @HatomProtocol treasury. $USH minted by borrowers will be burned when it's sent back and the loan is paid. 4️⃣. 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘀 Synthetic tokens are designed to simulate the value of another asset. BASE BUILDING: AT THE MOMENT TRADERS DO NOT SELL NAILS/FOOD/ARMOR, for a more survival feel we made base building a little more grindy than other servers for a better experience (MOD: BASE BUILDING PLUS), THERE IS NO BUIDLING NEAR PVP ZONES, HIDEOUTS, OR TRADERS (500m from Hideouts/Traders, 300m from PVP zones). Get your grind on and have fun with more of an immersive pvp building system. We have BasicTerritories/PVEZE Flag Zones. You need a flagpole to make a base & you need a flag fully raised on your pole to enable PvP. Since we use PVEZ the flags help in case you need to defend against a raid. The flag also helps keep all your items secure from poofing away. Sadly bases can be raided even with your flag pole lowered. So it’s recommended that you keep your flag pole raised.
ALL BASES HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF VEHICLES THEY CAN POSSESS! Each base can have a max of 3 Land Vehicles & 2 Helicopters (This Is To Help Prevent Lag)
PVP ZONES/PVE: All PVP Zones contain either a military spot on the map, or Custom Keycard areas, Custom Key Cards spawn randomly around the map or in airdrops/military bases/bunkers.THERE IS ABSOULETLY NO KILLING OUTSIDE PVP ZONES, what ever damage you afflict on another Survior, that damage will come back to you, this a noob/pve setting of a server so show some respect.
KEYCARDS: There many different keycards you can get but they all are different. Some have different loot, some have mixed loot. Rare keycard rooms give 10x better loot than normal military/bm loot. There Is 2 Red/Black/Violet/Green Rooms. 1 Yellow/Blue/Med Lab/White Rooms.
Right Now The Keycards Ranging From Best To Worst Are Red, Black, Yellow, White, Violet, Green, Blue, Med Laboratory. There will probably be more in the future. Red Keycard Loaded but is suuuper rare.
(NOTE: Right now please don't fly into keycard areas. We recently added helis again and some areas are possible to fly into (AI will probably shoot them down but still we want keycards to be used to access keycard areas. ALSO When you open a keycard room it will stay open until server restart because the loot crates wont reset until after restart)
THE BUNKER: Right now there is currently 1 bunker on the server. You need a White Keycard to enter it & when you enter it turns to total darkness. You'll need a light or nvgs too see anything after entering. This place is worth checking out but be careful of possible chances of Zombies/AI. The bunker is really nice for finding blackmarket items and chances decent/guns/armoammo.
TRAVEL TRADER: We recently added a trader that can change locations and also change what they Buy/Sell! The Travel Trader Can Spawn At Any Keycard Locations (Based On When I Move Them) & Trades Rare Items Other Traders Might Not Sell Or Might Buy/Sell At A Discount!
TRADERS: Traders are all around the map and they only sell certain items there. Very high powered weapons cannot be bought a civ traders, they will most likely be purchasable at Blackmarket or not purchasable at all, you will need to scavenge your way around the map if you want to be the best, there are no handouts. Normal Civ Traders will have the essentials there to survive.
AI/BOSSES: AI spawn at all keycards/hideouts except Blue/Green Keycards. They have a chance to spawn anywhere else. There are 3 Bosses on the server. Killa, Zryachiy, the Goons. Killa spawns at Red/Black/Yellow Keycards. Zryachiy spawns at Prison Island. The Goons can spawn at Red/Black/White/Med Lab. The Goons are the rarest Bosses to run into right now while Killa and Zryachiy are about the same. Killa and Zryachiy can have guards.

I have 10 accounts in collections (all medical bills from ambulances and hospital visits), totaling $14,000, split between two different collections agencies. I have already disputed the debts that were disputable. I get multiple calls a day from several numbers, it never ends. I posted a very condensed version of this theory as a response to another post. It got a lot of upvotes. I write long form theories for my own amusement and don't really post them, but given the upvotes, I thought people might be interested in this.
Be warned, it's a long post.
This post will have all spoilers, including for Mistborn. It will also be discussing details of the preview chapters from SA5, as well as comments Brandon has made in WoBs and his podcast. If you are avoiding previews, read no further.
The Theme of the Stormlight Archive
One of the major, if not the main, themes of the Stormlight Archive is the nature and limits of moral responsibility. Our different characters are each exploring this theme in different ways. Kaladin is learning that leadership does not mean you have to take responsibility for everything. Dalinar is learning the opposite lesson, that having to make tough decisions is no excuse for giving up responsibility. Navani and Rabonial’s discussions touch on how responsible we we are for the actions of our ancestors. Shallan, ever the weird one, is exploring if “I” can be responsible for the actions of “us”.
I want to discuss this facet of the series with three characters and do some mild speculation on what this likely means for what’s in store for them for the end of the front-half.
Szeth - I was only following orders
Szeth’s solution to the problem of responsibility is to place it outside of himself. As we can see from the Szeth flashback preview, this has been an urge of his since childhood.

We know in adulthood, following being made Truthless, Szeth must follow the orders exactly of whoever holds his Oathstone. He hates what he is forced to do, thinking it will damn him, but he never wavers from this, he will never assert his own moral judgement over the “taking orders” approach. Part of the reason for his reaction at the end of WoR is the realisation that he was never Truthless at all, that he had been right about the return of the Radiants. This nearly breaks him. The clear parallel is to the people of Uvara in Hoid’s tale of the Wandersail.
Later, Nale inducts Szeth into the Skybreakers, recognising his preternatural ability to follow an external code. By the end of Oathbringer, Szeth is beginning to assert his own morality. He doesn’t trust himself to make decisions himself, but he is at least willing to decide what moral code he will follow, or specifically who he is willing to follow, namely Dalinar.
We know that Szeth and Dalinar’s books could have been reversed, with Szeth being book three and Dalinar’s being Book 5. Their journeys are both about taking moral responsibility for their actions. So it’s easy to see how these could have been switched.
Szeth has had a death wish for some time now, so that he can stop sinning. He has not been able to kill himself, as this is also against his external rules. My prediction would be that Szeth finally takes on a moral choice of his own which will lead to his death. A self-sacrifice, perhaps to save Kaladin or Dalinar. I’d expect this to be a reasonably triumphant moment and that he will be able to move on in peace.
There’s a nice structural neatness to this, the front five begin with Szeth’s assassination of Gavilar. Thematically and structurally, the end of the first sequence should end with Szeth reaching the end of his journey and taking full responsibility for his moral decision making and finally “adding” instead of “subtracting”.
Dalinar - Look, I’ve said sorry, let’s move on
Oathbringer is a brutal book. We see one of our favourite characters brought low, not just in his own estimation, but in ours as readers as well. Kaladin’s experience in RoW was tough, but we the reader never thought less of him because of it. Dalinar on the other hand, we learn about his past, and it isn’t pretty. The man is vicious, brutal, rage filled and just a generally unpleasant guy to be around. This is jarring after the man we have experienced in WoK and WoR. He is, unequivocally, a war criminal.
The book ends with Dalinar taking responsibility for his past actions, and vowing to be a better man going forward. It’s a moment of triumph, he achieves the third ideal, he’s literally surrounded by gloryspren and he leads a team of Radiants in defending a city. He then writes a book revealing his actions and confesses his sins to the whole world.
And instead of being sent off into exile to atone for his sins, he’s allowed to remain King of Urithiru, put in charge of coalition forces and by the time of RoW is being thought of by former Ardent Godeke as some cross between a Herald, a Prophet and a God.
Something feels off about this. There are still arguments on this and other forums about if Dalinar has faced any real accountability for his crimes. What it certainly doesn’t feel like is the end of his journey. We know Book 5 could have been his book, so I would expect to see some significant Dalinar development during SA5.
In an episode of his podcast Intentionally Blank, Brandon talks about his view of the Grimdark genre. He considers it to be an intensely moral form of storytelling. His basic definition of Grimdark is that in this setting, doing the morally right thing will be costly. It will lead to negative outcomes for you. Brandon goes on to say that this is his view of morality, doing the right thing is costly to you. He gives the example of if you could be sure you would get away with a theft, and choose not to do this, then you have lost out on having the thing you wanted to steal, it has been costly for you. He admits this is slightly simplistic, but that it is his basic view of morality. Whether you agree with him is sort of irrelevant, he believes this. We should expect to see that reflected in his work to some extent.
Well what has doing the right thing cost Dalinar? Not much as far as I can see. It was emotionally difficult for him at the time certainly, but he doesn’t seem very traumatised in RoW, quite the opposite, he seems the healthiest he has been in a while. Yes his relationship with Adolin is strained, but not as much as one might expect between a son and father when a father admits being responsible for the death of the son’s mother.
I expect Dalinar’s journey is not coming to an end in Book 5. Whether he dies and becomes a fused. Wins and must preside over the reconstruction of Roshar or some other outcome we haven’t seen yet, Dalinar is not anywhere close to being done.
Dalinar and Taravangian are set up as the philosophical opposites of each other. Taravangian is the pure “ends justify the means” approach, and Dalinar is the pure “journey before destination” approach. Both agree that the burdens of leadership require one to have to make awful decisions. Taravangian believes that the role of a ruler is to take the sin upon himself so that one’s people can be free of it. It’s an oddly Christ-like perspective, taking all the sins of mankind upon himself in order to save them all. Dalinar believes the opposite, that a ruler can be moral, that the burdens of leadership need not stain one’s soul and that every person is responsible for their actions no matter their position or circumstances.
The interesting thing about these beliefs is that they are incredibly simplistic. They represent extreme ends of the spectrum and we can all think of counter arguments to each of them. Dalinar himself recognises this, in RoW he is frustrated with himself after a conversation with Taravangian because he was presenting only the most dogmatic version of his beliefs, and that of course there’s nuance.
There is a lot of speculation about the contest of champions, what form it will take and who will win. I have no idea. But what I do predict will happen is that whatever the outcome, Danlinar’s beliefs are going to be sorely tested. He is going to have to suffer and sacrifice and his journey is not coming to an end. Dalinar is one of Brandon’s oldest characters, and he’s named his son after him. He is important to Brandon in a way that most of his other characters aren’t. I don’t think he’s going to become evil but I also don’t think he’s reached the point of apotheosis. I do not think Brandon is done with him yet.
Kaladin - I’m way too important to be happy
In contrast to Dalinar, I got to the end of RoW and I felt like Kaladin’s journey was complete. I genuinely had no idea where we could go with this character. Yes he hasn’t sworn the Fifth Ideal yet, but in terms of his growth as a character, there’s not a lot of room left. Brandon has indicated as much in his post-RoW Q&As:
“This might be a slight spoiler for the next book, but I can tell you Kaladin has now turned the corner, I would say. You should be expecting from now on: Kaladin's still gonna have dark days, Kaladin has depression. But he turned a major corner in this book, and I'm very proud of him.”
And we can see this is the case in our preview chapter.
“Kaladin felt good. Not great. Not after spending weeks hiding in an occupied city, forced to stretch himself both physically and emotionally far beyond the reasonable limit. Not after what had happened to Teft. No, Kaladin didn't feel great. But he stood in the sunlight, looking out the window of his room. He thought that maybe he would someday feel great again. Knowing that, being able to recognize it, was enough.”
Now in other books, if we’d read a paragraph like this, we would all be terrified of the absolute horror show that was about to be visited upon Kaladin. Maybe many readers will still have this reaction. I know many think he’s going to have to sacrifice himself at the end of SA5, or that he will become a Herald and be tortured for all eternity. That he is the spear that will not break, and so he’d make a perfect replacement for Taln.
Maybe that’s right, but it feels thematically off to me. Kaladin’s big breakthrough at the end of RoW is that he is not responsible for every bad thing that happens, and he doesn’t need to be punished for it, so he can stop punishing himself. If he ends Book 5 taking on the big sacrificial lamb role, that feels like a backwards step for him.
Then there is this very intriguing exchange between Kalandin and Hesina in the preview chapter.
“I could have guessed," Syl said, "he would be tyrannical as a child."
"Not tyrannical," Hesina said. "He merely liked things to be the way that they should be. As he saw them. Children often are like that, Syl, accepting only one answer to any question because nuance is difficult and confusing."
"Yeah," Kaladin said, scraping the last of the lavis from his bowl. "Children. That's a worldview that obviously only strikes children, never the rest of us."
His mother gave him a side hug, one arm around his shoulders. The kind that seemed to grudgingly admit that he wasn't a little boy anymore. "Do you sometimes wish," she asked him, "the world were a simpler place? That easy answers of a child were, in truth, the actual answers?"
"Not anymore," he said. "'Cause I think the easier answers would condemn me. Most everyone, actually." That made his mother beam, for some reason, even though it was a simple thing to say.”
It was those three lines in bold that inspired me to write this post, they solidified a lot of my thoughts about the themes of the series. Brandon has been telling us for a while that any definitive answer to the questions of morality is necessarily incomplete. Human beings are too flawed to create a moral system which can be applied to any set of circumstances. It is my view that the “easy answers of a child” are all the various absolutist versions of morality that Brandon is having his characters explore. Kalandin, the one who is furthest in his journey, recognises this. That “nuance is difficult and confusing” but without it we condemn ourselves.
So what does this mean for the end of Kaladin’s journey? The first thing is I think Brandon is done torturing Kaladin. He’s going to have a much easier time of it in Book 5. I suspect his function in the main part of the narrative will be helping Szeth reach the point I’ve predicted for him above. But I do think this is the end of Kaladin’s journey and we will be seeing much less of him from now on. That’s not to say he will die, but he does not have much more growth to do as a character and therefore he’s going to be far less interesting.
The fact that Kaladin has reached the point where he can recognise the flaws in absolutist morality may mean he might be able to bear the Shard of Honour without going mad. Tanavast seems to have been torn apart by his conflicting oaths, leading to his madness and eventual death. I’m unsure if the Shard even can be reformed at this stage, but my tentative prediction is that it will be Kaladin, not Dalinar who is able to do this, if anyone can.
Conclusion - Journey and Destination
Brandon doesn’t really write endings where evil wins. We don’t have an example of the Empire Strikes Back in the Cosmere yet. What he specialises in is the “qualified victory”. Era 1 Mistborn is this on repeat, “we beat the Lord Ruler, but something worse might be waiting behind the curtain”, “we saved the city and Elend survived, but we unleashed Ruin upon the world, oh and most of the crew are dead”, “we saved the world, but Vin and Elend are dead”.
So what would a qualified victory be for the first half of SA5? The end of the war, but the loss of Dalinar? The reforging of Honour, but Kaladin leaving this mortal coil to take it up? Redemption for Szeth, but his death in the process?
SA5 is going to be a big book, and there are way more journeys to reach their destination than just these three. Shallan is nowhere near finishing her journey. Adolin doubtless has much more to do. Navani is going to be the mother of the space age and Venli is going to gain freedom for the Listeners.
The speculations above are entirely thematic. They don’t consider the mechanics of how any of it will happen. Brandon is known for subverting his own magic systems in a satisfying way, so even if I am right about where the stories are going thematically, it is still going to be a shocking and rollercoaster ride to actually get there. We might be able to see where we are going to end up, but as always, Journey before Destination.

The Theme of the Stormlight Archive
One of the major, if not the main, themes of the Stormlight Archive is the nature and limits of moral responsibility. Our different characters are each exploring this theme in different ways. Kaladin is learning that leadership does not mean you have to take responsibility for everything. Dalinar is learning the opposite lesson, that having to make tough decisions is no excuse for giving up responsibility. Navani and Rabonial’s discussions touch on how responsible we we are for the actions of our ancestors. Shallan, ever the weird one, is exploring if “I” can be responsible for the actions of “us”.
I want to discuss this facet of the series with three characters and do some mild speculation on what this likely means for what’s in store for them for the end of the front-half.

I am writing this post to share my thoughts on connectivism, a learning theory that I believe greatly aligns with the pedagogical methods displayed in EM203 “Learn 280 Characters of Less”. I ask anyone who has the opportunity to read this post, to reflect on their own learning experiences and how they have potentially changed over time. What is connectivism?
Connectivism is a theory first introduced to the world in 2005 by George Siemens and Stephen Downes, two theorists who believed that technology and the digital landscape are integral to the learning process. Connectivism is based on the key idea that new forms of knowledge are a result of a collection of relationships or “links” between “nodes” that make up a network. A “node” in this network refers to any object such as a book, webpage or person that can be connected to another node. Learning, therefore, consists of the student’s ability to develop and navigate these networks of information to achieve the desired results.
According to Siemens, there are 8 principles of connectivism:
The biggest difference between the two learning styles is the significance a connectivist viewpoint places on how the internet has altered the nature of knowledge. Under a constructivist stance, knowledge is constructed by relating new information to past experiences and is an active process that humans undertake to learn. Connectivists on the other hand believe that knowledge is neither created nor controlled but is instead constantly shifting and adapting to changes in the information network. As nodes come and go, links form and disappear knowledge is changing in real-time. The internet provides a way for this knowledge to flow, adapt and be traversed.
How can online courses demonstrate a connectivist approach?
There are many methods an online course can adopt to align with the connectivism learning theory. Here are a few examples:

Since the beginning of this course, technology has been a major focal point and has been used effectively to facilitate and aid the learning experience. The first example of this is the creation of our Twitter accounts which has allowed me to connect easily with our classmates and hear their opinions on course content. The second example is our utilization of the MyLearningSpace platform to not only encourage online discussion but, is an effective way to deliver course material in text, image, and video format. Before I began working on this assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down and have an online synchronous chat with a few classmates. It was great to hear everyone’s opinions on how technology has greatly altered the course of learning theories in the classroom and provided a great foundation for gathering information about connectivism.

Reddit is an online social news site that allows users to create accounts, join communities, post content, comment on others’ posts and vote through upvotes and downvotes. Created in 2005, the site is now host to 57 million+ unique daily visitors, 100 thousand+ active communities and over 13 billion posts and comments on pretty much any topic you can think of. Reddit can be easily accessed from any laptop, desktop, or smartphone all that is needed is an internet connection.
Why I choose Reddit to demonstrate connectivism:
Reddit, like Twitter and other social news platforms, connects users from around the world with each other in real time. New posts and comments are being made every second of every day. This means that users are connected to a network of information that is constantly updating and adapting so that the most accurate and updated information is available. I believe a quick comparison of Reddit’s features with Siemens’s 8 principles of connectivism will highlight part of why I choose Reddit as my medium of communication.
I have used Reddit for everything from in-class learning assistance to helping in my day-to-day life. I, like many others, find that I can much more easily grasp more complex subjects by having a conversation and connecting with those more knowledgeable about a subject than myself. Reddit creates an environment where this is incredibly easy to do so, and I believe it does it significantly better than many alternatives. Online classes such as this one, provide an immense amount of freedom to students and puts the onus of learning on ourselves instead of the teacher. Teachers are here to provide the initial learning environment. In the case of EM203, it comes in the form of weekly lessons that become available along with discussion topics. It then requires the student to connect to networks in hopes that learning will occur automatically. Reddit, to me, is a great network in which I can use this freedom I’ve been granted to really dive deep into the topics that interest me and align with the course goals. In lesson 3 of module 1, we were asked to learn a new skill. The first place I went on my quest to learn this skill was Reddit. There I found a plethora of videos, links, and personal opinions on the topic. In my case, I choose to learn how to complete sudoku puzzles. The most helpful was a post from an avid sudoku fan who gave a rundown on the best strategies when you first begin the puzzle. Things like what you should look for and what are some examples of common patterns.
Reddit has been an incredibly valuable resource that aligns with my learning style and is consistent with what I believe the direction learning theory is taking classrooms in. What is connectivism?
Connectivism is a theory first introduced to the world in 2005 by George Siemens and Stephen Downes, two theorists who believed that technology and the digital landscape are integral to the learning process. Connectivism is based on the key idea that new forms of knowledge are a result of a collection of relationships or “links” between “nodes” that make up a network. A “node” in this network refers to any object such as a book, webpage or person that can be connected to another node. Learning, therefore, consists of the student’s ability to develop and navigate these networks of information to achieve the desired results.
According to Siemens, there are 8 principles of connectivism:
- Learning and knowledge rests in the diversity of opinions.
- Learning is a process of connecting.
- Learning may reside in non-human appliances.
- Learning is more critical than knowing.
- Nurturing and maintaining connections are needed for continual learning.
- The ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.
- Accurate, up-to-date knowledge is the aim of all connectivist learning.
- Decision-making is a learning process. What we know today might change tomorrow. While there’s a right answer now, it might be wrong tomorrow due to the constantly changing information climate.
The biggest difference between the two learning styles is the significance a connectivist viewpoint places on how the internet has altered the nature of knowledge. Under a constructivist stance, knowledge is constructed by relating new information to past experiences and is an active process that humans undertake to learn. Connectivists on the other hand believe that knowledge is neither created nor controlled but is instead constantly shifting and adapting to changes in the information network. As nodes come and go, links form and disappear knowledge is changing in real-time. The internet provides a way for this knowledge to flow, adapt and be traversed.
How can online courses demonstrate a connectivist approach?
There are many methods an online course can adopt to align with the connectivism learning theory. Here are a few examples:
· Social Media
- Social media can be an effective tool for any classroom by creating a space for students to easily interact, discuss and share their opinions on class topics. Proper use of social media can also boost engagement and individual learning opportunities. By following informative accounts about topics that interest students they can be easily connected to new information on an array of topics that couldn’t be covered in limited class time.
- examples of social media tools: Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook
- Gamification is essentially adding elements of games into the learning environment. This can be done by:
- Creating leaderboards to encourage healthy competition.
- A rewards system such as points or badges that awards students for completing tasks.
- Interactive lessons (ex. Kahoot) centered around lecture material.
- Simulation encourages a deeper understanding of the material as opposed to a much simpler memorization approach. Simulations push students and often encourage greater development of “links” between the “nodes” present in the simulation.
- Ex. In a finance class I took, we were required to create our own stock portfolio and track/ simulate the results over the course of a few weeks. This allowed me to develop more information connections to the stock market than simply reading the material online.
Connectivism and EM203:
Since the beginning of this course, technology has been a major focal point and has been used effectively to facilitate and aid the learning experience. The first example of this is the creation of our Twitter accounts which has allowed me to connect easily with our classmates and hear their opinions on course content. The second example is our utilization of the MyLearningSpace platform to not only encourage online discussion but, is an effective way to deliver course material in text, image, and video format. Before I began working on this assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down and have an online synchronous chat with a few classmates. It was great to hear everyone’s opinions on how technology has greatly altered the course of learning theories in the classroom and provided a great foundation for gathering information about connectivism.
