2023.06.10 20:09 Excellent_Iron9483 Ten things each USMLE student should do

Ten things each USMLE student should do

Ten things each USMLE student should do

(“You might feel like you know it all until you start getting into details! ”)
I completely understand how daunting it feels to prepare for the USMLEs — a mountain of information to learn, questions with confusing choices that make it difficult to pick the “best” answer, and on top of all that, a strict time limit!
I’m an Internal Medicine physician, an Assistant Professor at Brown University, USMLE STEP 2 CK tutor for Michigan State University, and an author of a USMLE STEP 2 CK textbook encompassing all topics for the boards (Thieme: A WIN series for USMLE available online and in bookstores). In addition to a decade of teaching experience, I scored in the 99th percentile on all the 3 USMLE STEP exams and am currently creating an online USMLE question bank.
I hope the following 10 pieces of advice will simplify your “road to residency”:
  1. Use the “IRIS” steps to master USMLE topics. Input- Reflect- Integrate- Share
  2. Do as many practice questions as you possibly can ~The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get
  3. Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically.
  4. Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis.
  5. Use memory techniques to help you remember important details.
  6. Pomodoro!
  7. Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey.
  8. Get a USMLE-coach
  9. Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!)
  10. “The shortest path”

1. Use the “IRIS” steps:

Input, Reflect, Integrate, and Share — in order to master the USMLE topics.
https://preview.redd.it/kcxcgtm0p75b1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=aeab3498231448f534cde68106c93db5d7006ee9
Reading a book (for example, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) but not reflecting on it and not integrating it into practice will result in the “illusion of learning.” Similarly, it is extremely crucial to practice IRIS to perfect your craft of USMLE preparedness.
Books serve as a great base camp for your knowledge ascents. Choose any USMLE book- a comprehensive book you can reflect upon — for annotation, highlights, and other important notes/personalized mnemonics.
  • For Step 1, there seems to be a consensus of a clear-cut winner being First Aid for Step 1.
  • For Step 2, go to your university library (online/virtual), scan a few of the most popular books, and find one that fits your style. Then stick to the “chosen one” for your learning journey.
Shameless ad: the textbook I authored (Thieme: A WIN book) is also a concise yet thorough book you may choose to utilize for Step 2 CK or Step 3. Check it out!

2. Do as many practice questions as you possibly can.

The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get.

  • Finish all Uworld questions (tutored mode, chapter by chapter; learning one topic at a time improves clarity and efficiency).
  • Then finish the 2 Uworld sim forms, the free 120 NBME questions, and NBME practice exams (in the timed mode — to simulate real exam and to practice time management).
  • Also, try to finish as many Amboss questions as you can. If you finish Amboss too and have extra time and want to be a superstar student, you could even finish Kaplan Qbank along the way!
A suggested timeline for a 2-month USMLE Step 2 study schedule:
  • Complete the entire Step 2 CK UWorld in the first month (averaging around 80–100 questions per day). Focus on the learning objectives of each question and move on — you don’t need to memorize the entire explanation (example demonstrated below).
  • Then, for the next month, do an NBME self-assessment every week to assess your progress. Also, this month, focus on your NBME deficiencies (target your weaknesses, do not run away from them), and attempt to finish the Amboss Qbank.
Links: to NBME, UWORLD, and Amboss

3. Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically.

Step 1: Start by reading the last sentence of the question — this will save some time and will help guide your attention to the specific thing that the question is asking.
How does this save time? With some questions, you don’t necessarily need to read the entire question to pick the correct answer.
For instance:

Which of the following medications will help with ureteral stone expulsion? The answer, in this case, is tamsulosin.
You don’t have to read the entire question stem to answer this question! Time can be saved for other harder questions you will encounter later in that block.
And, if you are doing practice questions from a Qbank, you don’t NEED to read the whole explanation. The goal of this question is to understand that alpha-1 blockers help with ureteral smooth muscle relaxation making it easier for the stone to pass. That’s all; just move on to the next question.
Another tip to save even more time: For really long question stems and lots of lab values, you could jump to the last two lines and scan the labs to note any specific abnormal lab values that might’ve been presented to help answer the question even faster. For example, a long clinical vignette that ultimately says “antiGBM antibody positive”: This line alone gives you the diagnosis of Goodpasture’s syndrome, so you can proceed to answer the question.
Step 2: If the last line (or scanning the labs) isn’t enough, you must read the whole question.
The most efficient way to answer the majority of questions is to follow these steps:
  1. Read the question stem and highlight the pertinent findings.
  2. Make the diagnosis.
  3. Choose the answer based on your diagnosis.
Some students tend to fall into the trap of reading the question stem and then trying to reason through each of the answers before committing to a diagnosis, which is inefficient, as it leads to many back-and-forths.
To reach the diagnosis, focus on your highlighted portions of the question stem. Those are the puzzle pieces that you need to connect to figure out the diagnosis.
For instance:
  • Hoarse voice + weight gain + 1+reflexes in all extremities + proximal muscle weakness = Hypothyroidism
  • Hirsutism + easy bruising + proximal muscle weakness = Cushing syndrome
(As a last step, ask yourself whether all the puzzle pieces fit into the diagnosis you have in mind. To double-check, consider whether your diagnosis fits the patient’s age, chief complaint, and course or severity of the disease. If not, you probably don’t have the right diagnosis and need to re-think it).

4. Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis.

But how you may ask. Let me break this down even further for you.
To answer USMLE questions correctly, you need to master the art of making the right diagnosis — an art that can be learned by clustering different conditions with similar features and then recognizing the features that set them apart.

https://preview.redd.it/fild67zdq75b1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=a16058a9c5ded78f1fd3701a825c993df155da69
Example:

HOW TO APPROACH IMMUNODEFICIENCY QUESTIONS?

https://preview.redd.it/2zddp8a5e85b1.png?width=1584&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9a01601bd5fbe9cefc5a5fc88b3dcea74e6f1bc
Further practice: Click on the following links to practice a few questions dedicated to learning of clustering and differentiating method:
Remember, no matter how prepared you are, you will always feel uncertain about some questions, and that’s okay. Just use your best judgment, flag it, and move on. Chances are that you might have a fresh perspective on the question when you come back to it later.

5. Use memory techniques to help you remember important details

Memorizing various pieces of medical information (for example, differentiating features of diseases, management steps, cut-off values, etc.) is key for acing an exam. Use memory-retaining techniques and tools, such as associations, mnemonics, the popular flashcard app ANKI, etc.
Example:
New onset ascites generally require diagnostic paracentesis. The two most important things you look for in ascitic fluid are SAAG and neutrophil count.
  • SAAG (serum ascites albumin gradient) = serum albumin concentration — (minus) albumin concentration in ascitic fluid
  • What is the cut-off of SAAG? 1.1.
  • How to remember? SAAG: “AA”= “1” and “1” because “A” is the 1st alphabet. So, the important SAAG value is 1.1. Elevated SAAG (>1.1) is elevated portal pressure.

https://preview.redd.it/emo0d5zjq75b1.png?width=1382&format=png&auto=webp&s=b87580625183237422dc705f08b5c3e0868bc203
Don’t build buildings without foundations. Don’t use rote memorization. Use (or even better, create your own) memory associations/mnemonics whenever possible.
* Ascitic neutrophil count of ≥ 250/mm3 is diagnostic of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.
Example 2:
How to tackle questions of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia?

https://preview.redd.it/9q58a3plq75b1.png?width=1628&format=png&auto=webp&s=62de1716c6d57cd8baeaf64ecc020f58640a6108
Here is a link to a practice question on Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (to integrate what you learned).

Here is a link to information on one of the students’ favorite tools: Anki cards. This is particularly helpful for step 1. I also advise students to make their own Anki flashcards (based on UW incorrect, cross-referencing your chosen book as you make the cards). This reflective and integrative act of making cards is one of the best ways to retain information.

6. Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique

The most important strategy for productivity is the Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique; Do 25 minutes of USMLE-focused study prep time (with no distractions like your cell phone or TV), followed by 5 mins break. Then, refresh and repeat. (Some students prefer 50 mins study time and 10 mins breaks.)
Pomodoro breaks your work(study) time into portions and gives some rest time for the brain to come back much more refreshed. This provides the much-needed reset to your productivity decline after 25 to 50 mins of study (improving overall efficiency and preventing burnout). I have seen some students working on their computers during this 5 min break. This isn’t RAM refreshment. (Get up from that chair, go out of that room, and de-strain your eyes and your body posture!)
Here is a link to a great Chrome extension for this. It also measures your total study time.

7. Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey.

If you start following these 10 pieces of advice from the beginning of shelf exams, by the time you take your USMLE Step 2, you will have mastered all its topics (and you may need a quick refresher, that’s it!).
Example:
During your 3rd year, use the IRIS steps: do UWorld questions subject by subject and take NBME clinical mastery for Shelf Exams.
Processing one subspeciality (chapter) at a time also improves clarity and efficiency — a lean-learning principle as opposed to batch processing. Isn’t shelf preparation automatic portioning?
Note: A 1–2-month time frame for USMLE preparation doesn’t typically give you enough time to follow ALL the IRIS steps. Also, during this time, a common example of batch processing occurs where students generate a practice-question block choosing all the system topics in UWorld instead of honing in and tackling one topic at a time.

8. Get a USMLE coach

All athletes have coaches; why don’t we?
You can get online USMLE tutoring/mentoring or seek a well-qualified USMLE tutor through your university.
There is no shame in asking an expert for help to improve any areas of weakness. When I go on my snowboarding trips, I always seek a few snowboarding lessons to accelerate my learning process.
Another shameless ad — I tutor on the Wyzant online platform. Here is a link to a $40 OFF for your first class.
I also do free weekly 1-hr Zoom sessions (Wednesday at 6 pm EST) on “how to get better at tackling USMLE questions” that anybody can participate in— here is the link.
Has there ever been any Olympic athlete who won a gold medal without the help of a coach?

9. Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!)

Take proper care of your physical and mental health -Since I love mnemonics, here’s another one! SEE well to do USMLE well: Sleep, Eat, and Exercise:
  • Sleep: at least 7–8 hours every day to recharge your body at night (Don’t partially charge your phone overnight only to run out of battery by noon)
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Exercise regularly

10. Always take the shortest path

There might be an infinite number of ways to go from point A to point B, but there is only one shortest path.
Finding the shortest path frees up some time to do other activities in our limited number of hours in a given day. So try to maximize efficiency.
Perhaps, the shortest path to achieving high scores on USMLE is to start following these 10 pieces of advice NOW !!
I hope this short thread on “how to learn!!” will help you on your road to residency!

Appendix:

Exam question schema: — In some USMLE questions, the question creators add a detail that tries to derail you through a red herring. Examples: “A family history of a neurological disorder in a case that sounds like chronic tuberculous meningitis,” “a recent camping trip history in a case that appears to be Neisseria meningitis,” “ a malignant head tumor that was noticed after head trauma” etc.
So in most USMLE questions, — you need the following schematic understanding:
https://preview.redd.it/dw1kitozq75b1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=b71305adbac7e9204789f2665d711e9bbdcba349

2023.06.10 20:09 prince-white The statute of secrecy... Failed. Hogwarts... Never really took off as 'the best school' (story idea / suggestion / prompt)

Okay, so I had just this idea, based on a scene of a story I'm reading. Not sure how I got from that scene to my idea, but that's not important.
Anyway, like the title says, the statute of secrecy failed. Hogwarts exists, but it never became a thing. The ministry isn't as as organized, as it is in the books. In fact, the ministry would be more of a bunch of families trying to keep order somewhat.
- random scene of what the story might have- (note, I'm terrible at Hagrid's accent, so I didn't bother and just wrote him normally.)
Harry stared at the man, who had gone from your ordinary "Joe Bloggs" into a man, who could probably punch Arnold Schwarzenegger's light out without even trying. The man was huge, he had a beast of a beard and if it weren't for the fact Harry was certain he wouldn't hurt a fly, he would probably be very wary of him.
"...Could you please repeat what you just said?" Harry asked.
"You're a wizard." The man, Hagrid repeated.
"That's what I thought you said." Harry muttered. "So, what, I can pull rabbits out of my hat?" Harry asked sarcastically.
"Nope. Nothing as elaborate as that." Hagrid said, either ignoring or not catching on to Harry's sarcasm. "I can conjure birds though, that means that I can make them appear out of nothing. Though, they're just constructs and will disappear after a few minutes. But that's all you need, really."
"And I'm supposed to go to this... What was it again?" Harry asked.
"Hogwarts." Hagrid repeated. "It's a small school, and it was founded a couple of centuries ago. It never became as popular as the founders had hoped, but it does have enough families that it can keep going."
"And my parents went there as well?" Harry asked.
"Yup." Hagrid nodded. "From the moment your mum knew she was pregnant with you, she registered your name. And once you were born, you summoned your bottle to you, when I was visiting once, when your dad wasn't quick enough to your liking."
"Does that mean you knew my mum and dad well?" Harry asked.
"I sure did." Hagrid nodded. "Taught them how to defend them against dangerous animals myself."
- other scene different from above, goes into detail about how the statute of secrecy may have failed-
"There were many tries and attempts to get families to agree to talk about a statute of secrecy. And of all those tries, only once did it get far enough that it might be approved." Professor Albus Dumbledore, headmaster and the one who taught history lectured.
"My very own ancestor, Arthur Dumbledore, argued that in favor of it, because of the prejudice mundanes had against us. Many unfortunate women were accused of witchcraft and while few of them were actual witches, the ones who were, were with very few exceptions, always young children."
"In the end, it failed and any attempts that followed never gained enough support to make it a possibility since. And given today's technology, it is very much impossible to truly hide or make people forget we exist." The professor continued with his lecture.
"Wizards and witches have fought openly and subtly in wars as recent as the first and second world war. In fact, if it wasn't for them, Hitler may have won the war. Today though, we have witches and wizards who work openly and secretly in just about every job you care to name. It could be argued that our world could be much more terrible than how we have it today. We have truth serum, which is available in the most terrible cases, such as where someone is accused of murder." Here the professor paused before continuing.
"It is however, not all bright and positive. The church," and the man was barely able to keep himself from sneering, "is still very much our enemy. They have brainwashed witches and wizards to infiltrate our settlements, before betraying them. They are put on trial, and while even the church can't get away with outright murdering them, their re-education camps are a fate I wouldn't wish on even my most terrible enemy."
--
And here I ran out of steam. I would envision smaller magical settlements throughout the world, each claiming independence but also connected to their muggle government. Some are left alone, leaving them to do as they please, whilst others are kept on a tight leash.
Thoughts?

2023.06.10 20:02 ExternalCrisisTime Advice on feeling guilt for taking Mental Health leave?

I'm going to keep it vauge because, knowing my luck, someone from my company will be on here.
I've been in my current managerial position now for two years. It's a non-profit, one of the largest in the country and is the second most profitable store by a large margin. In other words, it's absolutely manic. I was head hunted for the position two years ago and brought on to sort out an absolute shambles of a messily run store. Think zero care for rules and regulations, zero incident reports despite the store being an entire health hazard, regular theft and some of the worst, rudest and shoddy customer sales attitudes I've seen in a decade. (And I've had some seriously crappy jobs!)
Anyway, within a year, (with the core teams help) we all managed to get the store to a much better place. I slowly got rid of incompetent staff, let go of volunteers that were stealing and pushed for more staffing to help take the stress off the main core workers. (Who are awesome btw!)
Now as a non profit, each store is designed to be run by volunteers purely. Which, in theory, works if you have a small store that is easy to manage. Not with our store. It's huge, we do deliveries and collections so a lot of heavy lifting and manual labour is involved. Not unusual to hit 24k steps in a single day on the shop floor.
However, I came in after COVID restrictions, which meant we had lost 80% of our volunteer base ( elderly, immuno compromised, etc) as handling second hand items ran a far higher risk of contracting COVID 19. The store was struggling big time, it was five times the size of a normal store. Staff were unhappy, overworked and the previous manager had already left due to mental health reasons. (This is important to remember later!..)
I worked hard. I mean extraordinary hard, to get that store to a much better place. I held volunteer rally's, open days, coffee mornings, and went round local colleges giving talks about volunteering and the circular economy and encouraging work placement positions with us. I found local government grants to hire people on 20hr contracts in exchange for extra social welfare payments. I pushed for monthly and annual reports, budget plans, allowances and made interior improvements and exterior housing repairs that had needed to be done years ago.
I held staff meetings to find out what they wanted or needed (turns out training wasn't something the company offered AT ALL.) Then pushed for, and GOT additional annual training courses, better canteen facilities, even daily tools and equipment! Everything there was broken, tired or a donation.
It paid off, and I'm happy to say that in addition to having a really amazing core team, better working conditions and more qualified team members, the store is up 58% in PURE PROFIT ALONE. I mean, that in itself is pure insanity.
People are actually taking lunch breaks, using thier holidays and sick days and are generally happier. (I hope! ...at least, they could be lying to my face. There's always that fear. 🤦🏼‍♀️)
The only part thats getting worse...well... is me.
I'll admit, I'm not the best on mental health. I take care of all my staff FAR better than I ever take care of myself. (Not feeling well? Then straight home and bed rest, and take lots of fluids. If I'm sick...well then, I'm a piece of trash that deserves to die. lol)
I have a tendancy to go 100 miles an hour and not stop unless I'm dying. Which in fact, almost happened last year when I stupidly attempted to work through a bout of sickness that landed me in hospital for a week.
I love the job, but have realised that even if I give it 110%, it will never be enough. I've had zero support from my regional manager. All my results for additional support were ignored or refused. I'm the only paid member of staff there, so when we started opening back up on weekends, there was just this assumption that I'd do a 6 day week. (Which I did, stupidly, for 4 weeks straight, which led me to becoming severely burnt out.)
After that, I started going to therapy. Both to deal with my own anxiety and to cope with the stress of work. I've recently took a week's holiday from work to rest and honestly, just couldn't. Staff didn't show up, my manager rang me several times (no, I didn't answer.) And I found I just slept the entire week as I just wanted to rest.
After confiding in both my GP and my therapist, ice decided to take a months leave for Mental Health. The idea of going back into the chaos on Monday has my in tears all weekend and my heart just sinks.
I know it's time to move on but I have this overwhelming sense of guilt for leaving my team in the lurch. I know that if it was anyone else, I would fully understand and support it but because it's me, I feel like I'm somehow not entitled to it?
Like I don't want to inconvenience anyone or be a bother but I hit every number on the burnout assesment by my therapist apart from no.11 "are you participating in any dangerous new activities?" And that's purely because I'm so goddam tired and exhausted all the time!
I sleep from 7.30 till 8am some days and still feel like a dead weights on my chest. I can't switch off my brain and I'm constantly worried about work, if they're struggling, if there's enough staff, are we hitting targets.... It just won't stop.
I've a plan....to use the month to seriously job hunt, take care of myself and really, really take care of my mental state but....I can't help but feel like I'm failing somehow? That I'm letting work down? I know it'll go on without me, as any company would, but I feel like a child about to be told off for taking leave.
I don't know what to do anymore..

I haven't built a PC before, but I got this list put together by an employee at the local computer parts store. They had some store-specific sales, so the CPU is 25% off that listed price, and the Case and Power Supply come packaged together for 10% off. Before I buy and build it, I was just hoping to double check there's no obvious problems or compatibility issues with it. I mostly game (i.e., Elden Ring) and do game dev (Unity), which I think a build like this should be able to handle. Thanks in advance for any help!

2023.06.10 19:54 SwitchbladeLobotomy Always respect the forest when you go camping. (Part 2)

Part 1
It’s been a day, and still no sign of anyone coming by. I was really hoping to be writing this in the comfort of my home, but apparently there’s other plans for me.
I’ve been out of food and water, it’s all back at the campsite and I can’t rightly go back there.
I guess I’ll keep on reliving what was going on, maybe that’ll make time pass faster.
Ivy and I had dashed away into the woods, the late evening sun rushing through the trees alongside us. We heard the panicked yells and footfalls of our friends as they also fled, and we knew the ranger would likely be close behind us.
As fucked up as this is, I could only hope and pray that he’d follow after them instead of us.
We ran for what felt like an hour, but from the lack of darkness, I know it couldn’t have been that long. The sun was going down slowly, lazily, like it does in the summer. At least Ivy had killed the guy’s ATV, he’d have to follow on foot…
Although with how big the fucker was, his strides were probably long enough that was a negligible issue. Shit.
We stopped for a breather, the woods still eerily silent. We could no longer hear screams, or hurried footsteps. Just our breathing, trying as best we can to keep quiet.
After some time, we started moving again, slower now. The light was starting to fade, and we decided our best course of action was to try and walk back to the cars and go get help. Of course, there was hardly any signal at the cars, and absolutely none once we got into the woods proper, but we hoped we could get through to 911, if nothing else.
I looked to one side as I stood up, and on my left, I could see a phone flashlight cutting through the branches, bobbing with each step. From where it was being held, it likely wasn’t tall enough to be the officer. I squinted, and once it got a bit closer, I could make out the distraught features of Greg, Jeremy’s brother. His girlfriend, Loretta, was close behind. Both of them looked like they’d been crying, which was… understandable, I guess.
Greg looked at Ivy and I, squinting past his light. “You guys seen him?”
We both shook our heads, and Loretta rolled her eyes. “I told you we should just go, Greg.”
He snapped his head back to her, a glare on his face. “We all need to get out of here, babe. I don’t wanna leave anyone behind.”
Before Loretta could respond, the sound of metal scraping on metal was heard, like in a movie when a knife is pulled from a sheath. I turned my head again, and saw the large, imposing figure of the ranger.
He stood about ten feet off, holding a hatchet in one hand. “Hey, there, kiddos. Using lights at night in the forest can really disturb the local flora and fauna of this here forest.”
With that sentence that sounded straight out of a PSA, he Hurled the hatchet, the head of it finding purchase in Greg’s thigh. He let out a scream and collapsed to the ground, holding the handle of the small axe as he writhed on the ground. The ranger grinned, the last few rays of sunlight illuminating his face enough to let us see his sick joy at the turn of events.
Loretta screamed and bolted back in the way her and Greg had come, and he looked after her for only a moment, before looking at Ivy and I. “Go on, get the hell out of here! Go!”
Ivy hesitated for a moment, clearly wanting to help, but at the first footfall from the ranger, they nodded and took off, me following closely behind. As we took off, we could hear one last defiant shout from Greg.
“Fucking do it then! You goddamn freak! DO IT! Fucking ki-”
The word was cut off by the sound of impact on flesh, over and over. Eventually we ran far enough to escape the sound, and collapsed on the forest floor, breathing heavily.
We heard heavy footsteps treading, but not getting closer to us. They went parallel to us, eventually fading out into the night air.
We sat for about 20 minutes, listening for any sign of pursuit, or any sign of our friends. Right when we were about to get up and keep walking, we heard what sounded like a rope moving quickly? I can’t quite think of the words to describe it. It was close, we ran towards the sound and in about five minutes we saw Luke hanging upside-down from a tree, his bag resting on the ground near his head.
He looked at us as we approached, and quickly started shouting for help. Ivy and I both tried to shush him, but he wouldn’t listen, and we quickly heard the ranger making his way through the trees towards us again.
Luke seemed to realize what was coming, and he started screaming louder. Not for help, now, though. For Adam, for his mother, for God, anyone who could maybe hear him and send some giant eagles his way, so to speak.
The ranger emerged from the brush again, looking at his newly caught quarry with another grin. His uniform was stained with splatters of blood now, although his face was clean. His hatchet was tucked into his belt, now, and he was carrying a small bag on his back.
“Now, in this here forest we practice catch, tag, and release. These here snares are for catching, now I’ll tag, and then release.”
Luke tried to swing away from the man, but he reached behind the tree and pulled on a rope, and the snare gave suddenly, with Luke falling violently.
Due to his momentum in trying to swing away from the man, he didn’t land on his shoulder or have time to put his arms up to break his fall. He landed face first in the dirt, at a steep angle. His neck snapped, as did his back, and he folded over himself, his feet coming to rest near his head. His body gave one final shudder, and a wheezing, rattling gasp, before falling quiet.
The ranger cocked his head to one side, seemingly puzzled. I couldn’t help but think of a meme Ivy had sent me before this trip, asking why animals cock their heads when they see something strange.
What, does it make more sense at a 45 degree angle, bud?
The ranger coughed, still staring at Luke’s body. “Well. That, uh… Huh.”
He looked genuinely surprised, before shrugging and walking towards us.
Ivy, who’d been looking at Luke as well, a green tinge to their face, snapped their head up at the movement and bolted. I turned to watch them go, barely turning my head back to see the ranger swinging a fist at my head.
I yelped and dropped to my knees, barely dodging the swing. He snarled and tried to grab my hair, but I was able to dart between his legs and kick at the back of his left knee. He grunted and stumbled as I felt around wildly in the dirt. A solid stick, a rock, surely something here could help me…
The ranger stood back up, looming over me with a scowl. “Y’know, in this here forest we do our best to keep the paths clear. You’re not likely to find much that’ll help you bash my skull in, miss.”
He grabbed me by the shoulders and lifted me off the ground, dirt still between my fingers. Desperately, as he lifted me to his eye level, I ripped off his sunglasses with one hand, flinging dirt into his eyes with the other.
The ranger swore, dropping me and rubbing at his face. I took the opportunity and darted into the woods, in the general direction that I saw Ivy run.
Bedding down again for the night. Like I said, there’s barely any signal out here, all my calls have been dropping before they can get anywhere. Gonna try and conserve battery on my phone, keep my hazards on and hope that someone comes by.

2023.06.10 19:51 D4CLoveTrain123 A little discussion about the combat in TOTK

The other day I stumbled upon these "gems of a video":
While I personally think that these videos are some of the biggest doo doo that Youtube as a platform have to offer. I noticed a same criticism repeated in these TOTK critique. They said that the combat tends to get repetitive, there is no incentive to change strategy when approaching combat encounters and the weapon durability system being "bad".
So I want to offer my opinions about these issues.
Weapon durability
These debates about weapon durability exists since 2017 (six years ago - the year BOTW is released). Now I can't definitive conclude whether the system is good or bad. All I can say is this: The quality of the system will depends on the type of the gamer you are. After decades of triples A RPG releases with critical receptions, they develop a sense within gamers such that we tend to have attachment with the loots we gain after hours of hard work. And if the system shatter that sense of attachment, It will get criticized. I personally don't have that sense of attachment, so this system does work for me since it constantly making me thinking about what strategy to use when approaching combat encounters and not relying on brute force to solve my problem.
Strategies and
Admittedly, the strategy we use in our gameplay can be a little bit limiting, not because there is not enough of it. But it's due to the fact that once we find out the most effective strategy that fits our playstyle, there is not many reasons to deviate from it . I have a strategy in which I always have two types of weapon in my inventory: a frost weapon and a highest damage weapon that I could get my hand on. If I have to deal with enemy camps, just freeze them and switch to my high damage weapon and bonk them to death and to be fair, this strategy won't work in a boss fight, but this is related to the next issue is that...
Bows are way too overpowered
Ever since I saw the previews of the game back in April 28th 2023, and see there are enemy types that cover themselves in heavy armor. I instantly lit up with hopes that there are combat encounter that does not involve around bows. Think about it: What is the most effective way to deal with these new common enemies?
Even the talus family can be dealt with via bow and arrow if you land a bowshot to their weak spot (which is not tricky, since you can now fuse your arrow to keese eye to auto aim for you). The enemies encounter where bows are ineffective that I can remember on top of my head are the flux construct and the final boss fight, and that's good but not enough.
Now despite all of my complain I do not hold the opinion this combat is bad. But everything can be improved and I do think that the game can be benefited greatly with more enemy types and encounters that completely immune to arrow.
Combat repetition
Another criticism levied against this game is the fact that you will come across bokoblin camps that were copied throughout Hyrule and especially the depth. While there are ways to spice up these encounter in the form of battle talus, they're ultimately not enough since you will always deal with bokoblin camps the majority of the time you explore Hyrule. But in this particular issue, I can actually offer an easy solution:
I vividly remember the best moment while playing BOTW is in Trial of the sword final trial floor 23. Where I have to deal with a horde of bokoblin accompanied by two lynel. I got my a** beat four times because my dumba** didn't figured out that there are ancient arrows throughout the levels and had to repeat the trial every time I failed. So to instantly solve this combat repetition problem just by adding mini bosses to these camps, doing so not only spice up every encounter we might have and saving resource for Nintendo since we do not have to create new assets.
Final thought
Most of the suggestions I provided my contradict some elements provided by the game itself, which is why is think those suggestions can be reserved when Nintendo ultimately release Master Mode, because I do really hope that the changes they made will be more than just enemies level. And despite the fact that I complained a lot in this post TOTK is the best game I've ever played for a long time, but remember kids: Everything can be improved.
P/s: Bring back Trial of the sword please. Thank you!

2023.06.10 19:51 Eskerna_Luka The harmful side of the LGBTQ+ movement (very long post, take time).

Me and my friends have been studying and interacting with the LGBTQ+ offline and online for years. This article sums up our views towards some LGBTQ+-related issues. However, before coming to address that, I must insist on taking this position of mine without presuming that I am victimizing myself or intentionally unjustly painting the LGBTQ+ movement as a whole in bad image. The reason for this is that the people who instantly jump into such conclusions are also parts of the problem I am going to talk about. This post is going to be political (not American politics or online teenage banter), so if you are not happy to dwell into this area, decide for yourself before continuing.
Firstly, I would like to point out how oversexual many LGBTQ+ members are. By this, I do not mean that they must not argue for their rights, nor do I mean that every conversation they talk is about LGBTQ+ rights. Some people would take that as a reason to say the LGBTQ+ is forcing LGBTQ+ to their throats, but I do not think so. Our (me and my pals) problem is that almost every conversation which these LGBTQ+ folks participate in, they bring up wild sex without any sort of manner. Although they are not provoking us or something, neither is it that me and the fellers do not enjoy sex and attempt to find out the best methods for the finest sex, but we do not treat our daily life as mere sex. I also understand some non-LGBTQ+ people do talk about sex as much as these folks I mentioned, but not in my country, and my environment.
Here is the tricky part. For the person reading this, you must understand that whether or not a person is open to sexual conversations is, especially if you are from Europe or the United States, you may be completely fine, or mostly fine with having such talks daily. You believe that behavior is just, which I understand, that is your culture. I am not from the West, me and the folks are from what Western commenters enjoy calling the "third world." We have a different culture from the West, pretty much every other nation has different cultures from the West. Even the West has different cultures from other Western countries. So what you think as just might not be just for other countries. For example, if in your country, having a lot of body counts is a virtue while not in another country, you are obligated to respect that. For us, it is not just at all to have such an unregulated amount of sexual comments during the chatter. This is also a fact for everything other than sex, which I feel that a lot of people cannot grasp.
Unaccusingly speaking, the LGBTQ+ movement originates from the West. There, LGBTQ+ people are open to sex alongside a bunch of other stuff other cultures condemn. They talk about sex freely, and enjoy it freely. You can find a lot of articles from LGBTQ+ writers promoting sex and sexual styles. I understand, you do you in your country. The point is that Western powers colonized my country during the colonial era and it was also them who introduced the prostitutes and sexualized our women, as well as breaking our traditions and suppressing our religions and beliefs, while importing that of the West. The whole deal with the LGBTQ+ members in my country being too open towards sex seems a bit too familiar, considering the entirety of their lives surrounds what people from Western countries do. It is always "Western people do that, let us do that too." On LGBTQ+ subreddits, it is also very common for writers to condemn nations who have an apparently less open approach towards the LGBTQ+ movement. We can see a pattern of what the elites of a certain LGBTQ+ community have been attempting.
However, Western or not, globalization is happening and it is not only the West's culture that is affecting ours. We have viewed this through the lens of the struggle between nations, and it is only the matter of whether or not the readers of this post has done the same before coming to conclusions.
Secondly, it happens to an amount of LGBTQ+ people that somehow they are the center of the universe. Again, this is not meant to say that they do not have the right to address their oppression, however, I do believe this is both common for my country and the world that some LGBTQ+ folks are too egoistic for society's good. What I am trying to make clear is that, for example, my friend has been asked by a gay man whether or not he would want to date a gay man. He said no, and in a conversation with me, this gay person said my friend was just being jealous of not being as manly as he is. LGBTQ+ supporter pals also seem to cherish this guy's thoughts.
When men disagree with LGBTQ+ agendas, it is common for them to receive insults that they "are not a real man" from the community. When women do that, they also receive similar insults. It is a hypocrisy to fight for gender and sexual equality and liberation, but consider oneself the only true and just, while the others are mere barbarians looking for enlightenment.
Thirdly, a few LGBTQ+ sexual harassers have been rather more creepy than the average non-LGBTQ+ creeps, and they know how to take advantage of the LGBTQ+ movement. For instance, a few months ago, my middle-aged male colleague once was almost taken advantage of by a young male "genderfluid" person. It was at the end of the shift, and we were going home for lunch to prepare for the afternoon shift. I heard a lot of shouting voices from the department he worked in. It turned out that this genderfluid individual came to him and asked to have sex with him. He, of course, as much as he respected our culture and his duty to his wife and children, refused. The gender fluid person then grabbed his arm and insisted on having sex. My colleague, again, calmly said no. The other person had a breakdown and started calling my colleague a creep who been creeping on them for a long time. Other people heard the shouting and surrounded them. Insults were beginning to be thrown towards my colleague, a few people even went so far as to push my colleague around. It was only until the guards came that the truth was told. That genderfluid person did not come to work that afternoon. Our boss came to us and asked for what happened, he showed us screenshots of the genderfluid person claiming that we ganged up on him, sexually harassed him, insulted him, and attacked him physically. When our boss showed us the chat, the person has already unsent all of their messages.
This behavior is, to be honest, not uncommon at all. Online LGBTQ+ members and supporters have the same behavior when their agendas are questioned, or people dislike certain traits of their personalities, or when their wrongdoings are justly brought out to the light. Celebrities like Erza Miller have had similar breakdowns. Even certain United States politicians do that. Breakdowns are common for rude and egoistic people, but when gender, sexuality and a gender-based political movement is used as the justification, it is a much greater problem. Some people say such behaviors are understandable, because they root in the LGBTQ+'s oppression and mental health problems caused by abuse. That argument is but sophism.
Last but not least, it strikes us that certain parts of the pro-LGBTQ+ arguments usually found on online articles are misleading at best. For example, three years ago, movement supporters focused on attempting to prove that being an LGBTQ+ person was a biological necessity, however, a lot of LGBTQ+ members have now considered it to be simply a choice. In fact, it is a choice. Some members of the older generations also have sexual urges the LGBTQ+ have. However, they still decide to be the traditional male-female, male-to-female, and female-to-male. Supporters claim our parental generations are usually male-female only because the LGBTQ+ was more oppressed back then. However, this argument presumes that the older generations feel oppressed for not having the right to be the LGBTQ+, which is a fallacy.
It is a matter of fact that many people only become the LGBTQ+ after they have seen articles, or heard other people, or seen members of the movement promoting it. People usually adopt lifestyles they consider new, alien and exotic. In this day and age, that mentality is even more prominent than ever. It should not be hard to understand that lots of people only adopt LGBTQ+ lifestyles after they have seen it. This is not to mention that lots of teens and children are being groomed to become parts of the LGBTQ+ too.
Supporters give the argument that the media helps LGBTQ+ people find out their sexuality and gender. However, this argument makes the assumption that people are already LGBTQ+, which is also a fallacy. While there are a few (in contradiction to the numerous LGBTQ+ folks claiming to be nowadays) people who do have certain feelings leaning towards an LGBTQ+ lifestyle, as I have said, they can choose. In conclusion, the articles are not intended to "help" people "find out" anything, rather, they are written to lead people to adopt the intended sexuality and gender.
Another point to give is how some individuals only seem to have become more sensitive, felt upset, or go so far as to get depressed over gender issues after they have seen the media presenting them in such light. While it is true that a lot of people are harassed for being parts of the movement, however, if you pay attention, it is evident that the media has been influencing people to adopt extreme feelings. Notice the words that are used, the statistics, the images, the stories, the so-called evidences. Most articles are but designed.
That is all we have to say. You tell us what you think in the comment.

2023.06.10 19:44 autotldr Russian plane grounded at Toronto Pearson for more than a year seized by Canadian government

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 29%. (I'm a bot)
A Russian-registered cargo aircraft that has been grounded at Toronto Pearson Airport for more than a year has been seized by the Canadian government, Global Affairs Canada announced Saturday.
The aircraft, an Antonov 124, is believed to be owned by a subsidiary of Volga-Dnepr Airlines LLC and Volga-Dnepr Group, two entities against which Canada recently imposed sanctions due to their actions in the war against Ukraine, according to a press release issued Saturday by Global Affairs.
According to Global Affairs, this seizure is the first in the Government of Canada's plan of action to put pressure on Russia to stop its war against Ukraine by straining its economy and limiting its access to resources that fuel the war.
This is the first physical asset seized by Canada under this regime and the second seized under the Special Economic Measures Act.
"Should the asset ultimately be forfeited to the Crown, Canada will work with the Government of Ukraine on options to redistribute this asset to compensate victims of human rights abuses, restore international peace and security, or rebuild Ukraine," reads the announcement.
"Today, Canada is sending a clear message to the Russian regime that there will be nowhere left to hide for those who support and profit from the Kremlin's war of aggression," Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said in the press release.

2023.06.10 19:41 Cosmosly I found the PERFECT stock, and I’m betting everything on it. [Archive of WSB post]

I found the PERFECT stock, and I’m betting everything on it. [Archive of WSB post]
Disclaimer: this is my own stupid thinking, not investment advice. Ask your wife’s boyfriend if this is right for you.

Summary

Feel like you missed out on winners, or were too scared to put in your Doordash check? $SOFI is literally the next big thing. Bears/bulls, value/growth, regards/chads- it fits every DD. I’m so sure I maxed out my entire life savings. Considering a line of credit on my mom’s house and a margin loan next.
PROOF:
Brokerage and 401k (in the process of converting the other stocks)
Roth IRA
Robinhood options
This is NOT some SPAC bagholder trying to boost the stock price, nor is it a 0DTE cokehead move. This is a rational thesis for (I believe) a smart equity play. Did I see it go up a few cents, cream my pants, and think I’m the next Buffett writing this post? Maybe. In my opinion this is a 100% small penis 4-bagger and I’m sharing it like Moses with acid tabs.
Here’s the 4-point DD for you with ADHD:
  • It’s Robinhood, but actually good for you
  • The company is in great shape
  • Permabears and bulls have reasons to love it
  • The brand is (let me explain) the next JPMorgan Chase

Thesis

Product
  • SoFi is actually a great product. Is it the BEST? Fuck no. But it’s like the goldilocks/Anna Kendrick of all apps. The Friday night reliable.
  • The company is going for this generation’s next big bank. It is high-interest, chartered (4.3% APY) and offers everything you need under the sun.
  • The whole company’s theme is: “Get your money right.” They want to be the one-stop shop for all your MONEY needs and they do it with a bank teller smile.
  • SoFi will ride or DIE with you. Student loan refi, your job’s direct deposit, a loan for that cock ring, a credit card for that solo trip to Thailand, a HELOC for that YOLO stock play. It goes on and on.
  • They have consumers in mind, and not in a fake old lady See’s Candy kind of way. For example: if you lose your job and can’t pay your student debt, they will pause your payments and help you find a job. No joke. Look beyond the news and you’ll see people are over the moon about their relationship with SoFi.
  • They have a few bad spots (dogshit trading platform and ETFs that never move), but they are trying so fucking hard. I could go on and on, but it’s 5:49am (couldn’t sleep, came up with this post in a fever dream) and I have a ton more to write.
  • They also have Galileo and Technisys, which are like new PVC pipes for the financial system. I’m literally too smoothbrained to explain this, all you need to know is there is a lot of real interest from banks and companies to use these products. sofistock has nerds who can explain this to you.
Financials
  • Okay here comes the boring stuff, so skip this if you don’t care about amateur due diligence.
  • Remember when banks used to pay good interest, then you realized they were pocketing it all? People are realizing and going to SoFi. When the bank crisis happened and everyone was moving their money out, SoFi actually GAINED deposits. The company has said they are on-track to add $2B each quarter, and management are known to low-ball their estimates. NINETY PERCENT of their customers use direct deposit for their premium membership SoFi Plus, which will only accelerate the trend. You know how hard it is to change banks with direct deposit. Sticky as shit.
h/t SnipahShot for the graphic
  • SoFi has EIGHT fucking quarters of consecutive revenue growth, is EBITDA profitable (whatever that’s worth to you), and is projected to be GAAP profitable by Q4. I think there’s an outside chance this happens in Q3. Dig into it more if you want to Burry it https://s27.q4cdn.com/749715820/files/doc_financials/2023/q1/Q1-23-Investor-Presentation_.pdf
  • SoFi is growing WHILE student loans have been paused. Name a better miracle. They replaced it by diversifying their business in financial services (e.g. the shit I mentioned earlier) and other loans.
  • While most banks have been selling their loan books at a loss to manage higher interest rates, SoFi have been keeping theirs to maturity and getting a higher return. There is a lot of debate into this, especially around how they calculate mark to market, so again do your own DD about this.
  • By the way: “there are many reasons insiders sell a stock, but only one reason to buy.” The CEO Anthony Noto is eating pork and beans like me buying the stock like CRAZY. I mean just look at this degeneracy. He knows he has a chance to become the next billionaire bank CEO Jamie Dimon and has purchased back $13.6m dollars worth of shares (1/5 of his total comp so far lmfao).
He had to disclose his wife buying on the side too
Macro
  • Big picture time. Full disclosure, I’m a permabear. I literally have the worst outlook on things and I metaphorically killed my therapist with my doom and gloom. This country is so levered up to the tits it’s just one gentle breeze away from collapsing.
  • But you know who always gets paid? By hook and crook, the banks will get what they’re owed. If not we are all fucked and/or there will be a bailout. If everything is going to shit, banks are the least dogshit shit. Would you rather buy a stock with a tremendous amount of debt super dependent on consumer spending, or something that will make money in a depression?
  • I said this was a stock for everyone. For the permabulls, everything is fine and SoFi is growing its metrics like a rocket ship. What is there to lose? The management team has signaled good outlooks and the stock price has gone up consecutively since June 1st.
  • For value investors, this stock is still near book value. Most bank stocks are, but considering its fair value by Morningstar ($16) or PT by well-known analysts ($8-12) there are still some mArGiN oF sAfEtY
  • Growthies, this is a tech stock BABY. They are the AWS of finance! They use tech to analyze loan risk. They have AIAIAIAI in a chat bot! Upside everywhere
  • Oh and by the way, $SOFI is not correlated with its peers. Look at $LC $UPST and other fintech companies in the sector. In my mind it’s becoming the Nubank of America.
  • The Fed is expected to “skip” rate hikes next week. Long term that means APY is probably plateauing and on a downward trajectory. But if you know SoFi has done nothing but good and given you the best interest rate, why move?
Brand
  • Okay let’s start with them suing the government for pausing student loans. The CEO has addressed this multiple times: they support student loan FORGIVENESS, but when it comes to PAUSING payments for borrowers who don’t qualify, they thought the 3rd year was excessive. Yes they shit the bed bad for that, but they’ll recover.
  • Aside from the revenue, a big reason they did this is because the CEO has integrity. Like too much integrity to let this go for shareholders. Anthony Noto grew up working class, graduated from West Point, and rose through the ranks in the finance world. Imagine if Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was real and became a banking god.
  • His track record is insane. CFO for the NFL during record growth. COO for Twitter where he was putting out garbage fires. He knows how to run shit, and now he’s back in finance after SoFi booted the last CEO for being pervy.
  • One downside, he is boring as shit. He won’t talk about who’s a pedo, how Soros is evil or some other drama. He only talks about banking and banking accessories I tell you what. Bank Hill
  • Look at his Twitter Likes. https://twitter.com/anthonynoto/likes He knows something is brewing, and he gets a big payday if the stock hits $45.
  • Back to the company. At a recent fintech conference hosted by Piper Sandler, Noto announced that SoFi has a Net Promoter Score (how much people like the brand) of 80 for its loan business. For context, American Express has 52. The math says SoFi is literally 54% better.
  • Maybe part of the reason is because they have the naming rights to a football stadium in Los Angeles. One where little kids go to see Taylor Swift and grown ass men watch other grown ass men smack into one another. Where it’s mentioned all the time for being state of the art and environmentally friendly in the largest entertainment market. WHERE THEY WILL HOST MULTIPLE WORLD CUP GAMES AND OLYMPIC SPORTS.
  • I mentioned the SPAC bagholders. They still exist and have been pounding nonstop about the stock all the way down. There are some stonk flashbacks here that are about to explode.

BUT BUT BUT…

  • iTs pRiCeD iN – Wall Street is only getting a taste of this dildo. Once the annual shareholder meeting comes along next week and estimates come in better than expected on earnings, this next door 2 turns into a 10.
  • Student loans defaults are coming, you stupid fuck – You think the bank will let you go to Disneyland once they start asking for their money? They will garnish wages and withhold taxes on you plebs. Grow up or move to Vietnam. Or, just maybe, the stock goes up and you use the profits to pay off the ball and chain?
  • This is literally your first time posting to WSB – Yes, I’m a fucking worm lurking in the shadows. This will be the one and only thesis I put out.
  • Wedbush has a PT of $3, this thing is going down – Go ahead and listen to David Chiaverini, who has a success rating of 35% and has no skin in the game https://www.tipranks.com/experts/analysts/david-chiaverini Or me, who’s about to mortgage everything because he see’s asymmetric risk.
  • Why post now? – I genuinely think this will get re-rated with a soft tech valuation of $32, and we’re at the cusp of it happening.
  • What will change the price – Market realization, better than expected results coming soon, major deals announced, new product releases planned this year. Literally yesterday they announced “SoFi at Work”, a program to allow employers to help contribute to student loan payments.

In Conclusion

Take this however you want, go fuck yourself etc. If you miss the boat, DM me to sign up for a new SoFi account and get up to $275 back when you set up direct deposit.
Again I cannot stress this enough, this is not financial advice and please do your own research.

2023.06.10 19:40 Realistic-Cap-7635 Personal reflection on the game, and how it could be better

SAs someone who has:
  1. Completed all quests
  2. Completed Badum quests
  3. Unlocked Everything (Factions all 20)
  4. Have 285/285 with gear and guns
  5. Have around 8m - 10m Kmarks
  6. Am at best average at straight up PvP, most of my success is from playing smart and cautious (making moves at the right time, rotating and repositioning in fights, coordinating with my team, counting shots, etc)
These are the following things that I have observed about the game, but more specifically after patch 3.4:
  1. Most of my time playing the game is spent PvPing in duo and trio squads, helping out some of my friends do their quests, or just going around solo gathering cables for letium drills, doing data drives for dungeons, or farming pistons and aluminum for oil, or just doing jobs for scrips
  2. Having 10m sometimes but nowhere to spend it on since my stash is perpetually full means that I have to sell perfectly fine guns such as Flechettes and Advocates to buy Kors and Brutes just to keep my money down so I can pick more stuff up to sell and not waste K-Mark rewards from jobs.
  3. There has been a significant rise in cheaters after the patch. Before the patch, there were at best 1 cheater every 4 or 5 raids. Now it seems that there are cheaters almost every other raid, and raids without cheaters are either empty or full of white gear guys doing what white gear guys do.
  4. Dungeons somehow outclass Lab Keycard rewards. I understand that they are not the same thing, but I have over 800 hours this season, not once have I found a Lab Keycard. Good thing I opened the Lab keyroom just before it got nerfed.
  5. Due to all the end-game content being around the north-western part of Crescent Falls, the south-eastern part of the map is empty. The only people I ever find there are either white gear guys questing, or cheaters who ape for my brute that ran from Starport Warehouse.
  6. Matchmaking is still not fixed. I still get trios in my Crescent Falls/Tharis raids despite being a solo. (I literally see their drops, no they are not teaming)
  7. Before the patch, I had to forge around ~125x before completing the 10 Slags I need for Badum. After the patch, I have managed to get 5 slags in less than 20 forges, and got 2 slags back to back just a few raids ago. The drop rate may be slightly higher than intended, but the sample size of my personal experience may not reflect the actual statistics.
  8. Tharis is dead. As someone who actually enjoys Tharis Island, it's frustrating to have my favorite map nerfed to the ground that no one ever comes there anymore except for some white gear warriors looking for a comeup or just mining Tharis Iron, or those who are there to farm slags. It's a shame, because currently, Tharis is the only map that is actually almost free of any cheaters because of the level requirement to unlock the map in the first place(Most cheaters get banned before unlocking it, and the cheaters that actually play on Tharis are most likely retail cheaters meaning they are legit players but decided they needed an edge to play the game)
  9. I've been randomly getting disconnected from the raid, with my gear just vanishing, then immediately dropping back into the same raid naked. Sometimes, this happens over and over again, until I can find respite from a stranger who mercy kills me or until I exit to station which I usually do.
Now what exactly can be done about the game? I will enumerate suggestions that directly mirror the points that I have made above.

  1. The end game loop is absolutely terrible (wow, 103,127th time this has been said on the sub, i know). The game is absolutely in need of some content especially for end game players. PvPing is absolutely the only real thing that can be done, and while that is fun, why not just play other shooters that go straight to the point like Apex? Jobs are mostly tedious and annoying to do, and it does need either an update or a rework. A global leaderboard would also be cool, as we saw several people actually playing the game just to get on the howlerbuster boards.
  2. The money cap seems like a band-aid solution to a bigger problem. With the current economy of increased ammo and repair costs, more items added into the item pool, and no more permanent insurance, below average players are having a hard time keeping a steady economy in the station whereas successful players still are successful. I personally never really had a hard time hitting the money cap over and over again, the harder thing to do is actually keep my stash from overflowing. I thought the approach to season 3 was to make it easier for newer players to get into but the current system hard gatekeeps casuals while barely doing anything to sweats. Something they could do is just to add a high-roller lobby where you cannot insure gear, and the lobbies cost Kmarks to drop into or even aurum, and is locked with gear requirement so you know you will be fighting people in gear. This also means that if you die, you do not get anything back, and that what you paid for to get into the raid is also gone. (An immediate effect of this implementation might be that we would get almost empty lobbies in regular and high roller instances due to the players being further split into separate buckets but this change alone would bring back so many of the sweats who stopped playing the game back, and the casuals could actually just finish their quests)
  3. Nothing to say about cheaters really, but a few hours into the patch, guys were flying everywhere once again despite " 3.4.0 containing various backend improvements and tweaks to the anti-cheat formula and Yager adding new systems to the game to help detect and prevent the kinds of cheats we have found to be the most common ". I understand that 10 devs vs 1000 cheat makers is a tough battle, but certain measures to make reporting and banning cheaters can be done. Adding a death cam that can only be played after either the whole squad is dead, or the enemy squad is dead is one thing that can be doable, many other games have this feature. And before anyone starts going, "well, you can't do this because you can drop in the same lobby if you drop back down again and now you know where the enemy is", just make it so that players have a 15-minute cooldown per instance of the map which aligns with the time it takes for gear to despawn. That way, even the information you receive from the death cam is irrelevant 15 minutes later, and is only really useful for reviewing deaths and as evidence for cheating. Sure, you can get a lucky 5-headshot beam with a Kor on someone but 12x in a row in the same raid? That's an easy ban if anything.
  4. Key rooms are massively underwhelming right now. Community Room? Here's a green creature mod for your smg. What's that purple keycard you got there? - Oh, it's an Overgrown Keycard. That's 3 Circuit Boards, 21 Basic Light Ammo, and a white backpack. I've gotten 5,000 Overseers Office Keycards, but 1 Basecamp Armory Key, please explain how this is possible? Back in Season 1, key rooms were heavily utilized(as they should). Base Camp Luggage Room was always open, so was Armory in Jungle. Garage in Greens? Good luck. Hell, even Community Room was worth the trek because Loose House was there as well. I've since sold all my keycards early into the season as I have found it utterly useless and I have better luck picking up high tier weapons and armor just running around Tharis Island. Something clearly should be done here, the Lab Keycard during the start of Season 3 was perfect - it was hard to get up there, it's an extremely rare card, and it can be only used once. The loot was god tier, but that's assuming you can evac with it. And almost everyone only really got one shot at opening it, but I suppose that was too good because now all you ever really get is 3 PKR Maelstroms and a blue set. Sidenote: Puzzle Rooms are also really bad. They really are only for the reactors, and the weapon crate is a bonus, but the process of completing the puzzle, especially solo, is way too much of an ask for so little of a reward. The only puzzle really worth doing is the one by greens prospect since it can be done solo in 15 seconds, but even then you get shot as soon as you start doing it.
  5. South-eastern side of the map of Crescent should get some love. Add something there that would actually make players want to go there, or at least make them decide which side of the map they should go to. As of now, all the high-gear players go Warehouse/Pinnacle due to the large open areas which make it ideal for fights, versus the thick jungles of Favela that has dense foliage and full of cliffs where you die if you slip off of. Sure missions take you there, but everyone eventually completes their missions and its off to Pinnacle most of the time from hereon out. Buffing Community Key will not pull players there since keys are single use, and I understand the dungeon is there but let's face it, not many people enjoy doing the dungeon in the first place, be it easy as it was back then or how it is now.
  6. Fix matchmaking. That is all. Please.
  7. Whatever this is, keep it the way it is. Don't find out oh, the drop rate was increased to 30% instead of increasing it by 3% and reverting it back.
  8. Add gear lock to Tharis. That's it, plain and simple. There should be some risk to Tharis, and on the opposite side of the stick, there should also be reward. What is the point of ammo being more expensive, repairs being more expensive, money being harder to keep, if I can just keep dropping back in to Tharis with just a white backpack, mine for 5 minutes and evac with 30-50k worth of Kmarks in Tharis Iron? Imagine doing that for an hour, that's an easy 300k right there. Just about the same amount you get from completing a letium drill, but with no investment, no risk, just sacrificing your sanity for the sake of money. As it stands, in order to add 5% less fauna damage and 5% less damage from storm strikes to my shield and stamina regen during storm on my backpack, I have to fight 6 free loadouts ratting in and around Tharis without gaining anything yet risking everything.
  9. I understand ping limit, server issues, yada yada yada. Just make it so if you go poof, let our teammates pick our shit up. PLEASE GODDAMNIT. This is so dumb. I've lost countless loadouts to this dumb mechanic of being booted out of the raid, and now just to add insult to injury I get dropped back in but naked over and over again. What spaghetti code is this where you fix one thing and 12 other things become broken. Just please drop our shit, let some rando pick it up and have a nice feeling picking up a kor and purple set. I don't care. JUST DROP OUR SHIT PLEASE and thank you.

Without the girls, life settles into a boring rut. I talk to them as much as I can on the pad, but they’re busy on Earth, hitting the ground running.
There’s been a lot of ground to cover before they’re caught up to where everyone else will be, particularly for Vilek. She’s often had to pull double-claws of studying, working her fluffy ass off to gain a baseline understanding of psychology in record time. Thiva’s classes on VP by contrast have prepared her well for humanity’s relatively simple technology.
That, and they’ve had to get used to Earth. Earth food, Earth culture, and a planet full of omnivores with forward-facing eyes. I’ve been doing what little I can to help coach and encourage them.
For my own part I’ve been restless. Given that I’m not able to look for a job yet, that physical therapy kicks my ass every other paw, and that I’ve got nothing to do other than look forward to a half-hour of chatting with my friends… I’ve started up on software again. It’s something I can do even while laying prone. Particularly since I have a way to write without using my hands.
What do I do with that, anyway? I can read minds. I can even use the raw data from a full brain scan to extract memories. There’s got to be something useful to do with this. It’s practically the only part of this entire debacle I haven’t bothered telling the UN about.
Honestly after what I’ve been through, I can’t imagine trusting them, or the Venlil government, with this. Bastards would be prosecuting thought-crime by the end of the week.

Jarkim’s opened his business a couple of weeks back. Without an actual office, since he plans to simply operate out of Slavik’s farm. As I understand they tolerate it as long as he also helps out in return for food and board. I hope the arrangement works out for the both of them.
I gave Jarkim some help with his online presence. He wasn’t initially sure about the black and white picture of him in a fedora and a tie, or about the business name “Jarkim Krakotl, Private Eye”. But as soon as humans heard about Venlil Prime’s only Krakotl detective they’ve ended up coming to him with their problems.
He sent me a picture of his first solved case, some runaway kid who got lost and reunited with her mother. He was still wearing the hat. No tie, though.

Today is my paw off from Chasa’s torments, and it coincides with the launch of another exciting new business venture. So I take the time to visit Mosun.
“Hey Martin! Hold on a minute!” I see the Yotul wrangling a bunch of foam mats around the large, empty room. And its wall-length mirror. Fittingly the place look like the midway point between a dance studio and a martial arts dojo, except for the soft and spongy floor. It’s meant to safeguard against falls.
I glance around the room while he huffs and plops the last few ones down. There’s perhaps thirty-five or forty foam mats scattered on the floor. “So are you being optimistic, or did you get a good reception?”
He looks at me, bouncing with excitement. Though his ears signal a bit of nervousness. “Five Yotul have signed up so far! That’s almost half the Yotul in the entire town! And almost twenty humans! Hanya’s bringing a couple of Gojid friends too, and we’ve got a few Venlil coming along with their humans… Oh, and an Iftali, that was a surprise. Honestly I may be a little in over my head here; I’ve never taught crowds before! I’m not even sure how much will translate across species!”
“So you’ll be learning on the job. I have complete faith in you. Are the Exterminators going to give you any trouble?”
He barks a laugh. “Hah! No, Jarkim had a talk with the magister. I got permission from Vaska’s office to teach the classes in the name of cultural preservation, so those motherfuckers can’t touch me!”
I laugh as well. “You might need to censor your language a bit as a teacher.”
“Combat Dancing is about honesty and expression, Martin. If I can’t live it, how am I supposed to teach it?”
Well, he got me there. “Anything I can do to help?”
He glances at me, his voice gets a little uncomfortable. “Um, I don’t know. Can you carry heavy stuff right now?”
I shrug. “Probably not, no.”
“Then I’ll be fine. You’re not interested in taking the class?”

“I think my dancing days are over, for the foreseeable future.” I wryly lift my cane and wave it as a small reminder. It’s wood, and I’m quite fond of it. Chasa found a Venlil craftsman who wanted to be the first to make one for a human, and he made it out of the wood of some kind of tree called Lampan. The color reminds me of mahogany.
His ears droop a bit. “Ah yeah. How permanent is that looking?”
I shrug. “Finger dexterity on the right hand’s likely never going to be the same, but I’ll be able to play video games. Left arm should recover enough for daily use. Leg should get a full range of motion, but I won’t be going jogging. Thankfully I look dignified with a cane.”
He wags his tail teasingly and cocks his head as he regards me. “Do you? …Must be a human thing.”
“Piss off. Mind if I sit in on the class?”
“Of course not!”
Turns out first class of Yotul Combat Dancing is a quick demonstration, and then Mosun talking to the quite large and varied crowd. He talks about the history and cultural significance of Combat Dances to the Yotul, the philosophical underpinnings of the artform, and the mentality to be cultivated in practitioners.
Everyone is listening with rapt attention, and a few of the humans are even taking notes. When he opens the floor for questions, a Venlil asks “Isn’t this an expression of Predator Disease?”
To which Mosun answers “No. Next question?”
Which is honestly as much of a response as that warrants.
I talk with Hanya briefly after the class. She says that she’s been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and that human therapy is helping her out. She even talks excitedly about piloting shuttles again, someday soon. I’m glad for her.

Once I get back to the house, there’s a man in a suit waiting for me. He’s tall, bald, and has very dark skin. I don’t recognize him. He extends his hand toward me, and I shake it. He speaks English with an African accent, instead of letting the translator handle it. I’d guess western Africa, but I’m hardly an expert. “Bamidele Adeyemi.”
“Martin Russo. Can I help you?”
He indicates the door. “May I come in?”
“Sure. My Venlil hosts aren’t home right now.”
“Of course.”
Once he’s been let in, and I’ve given him something to drink, I wait patiently for him to explain his presence.
“I am the UN liason to the district magister’s office.”
I keep my tone neutral and politely curious. “What happened to Robert McGinley?”
He keeps his tone neutral too, but friendly. He smiles at me. “It was decided that he should be replaced.”
Oh no. Anyway. “Alright. But… No offense mister Adeyemi, but why are you here?”

He takes out a pad. “I have some documents that the UN and the District Magister would like you to sign.”
I sigh inwardly and make a quite heroic effort to not sigh outwardly. I look at the pad briefly anyway. As I expected, it’s about making myself legally liable should I speak up about what I’ve gone through. “I’m afraid you are wasting your time. McGinley told me to sign papers like this too, and I told him ‘no’.”
He nods, entirely unsurprised. “I understand you signed similar documents over a smaller… altercation with the Exterminators. Why the difference of response, if I may ask?”
“Because the first time he threatened to have me thrown out of the refugee center if I didn’t.”
Bamidele’s eyes widen briefly. “I see. That does explain why you told him to ‘fuck off’.”
“Yes.” I pause briefly. “…You’ve been polite enough that I don’t want to use the same language. But.”
He laughs briefly. “Haha, yes, I understand. Different circumstances, yes? My predecessor tried the stick. I am here to try the carrot. So tell me, mister Russo, what will it take for you to sign?”
“There’s nothing that…” I pause.
I sit down. I’m briefly quiet. I miss my friends so goddamn much. I swallow, mouth feeling dry as I tentatively reach for the proffered lifeline. “I… hear Sweden’s lovely this time of year.”
He flashes his teeth at me in a broad smile and chuckles pleasantly. “Hehe, I thought you might say that. But… You do realize it is January?”

The thought of leaving this wretched planet and its wretched food and its wretched government and its wretched ever-present sun makes me feel like I’m already back in Earth’s lighter gravity.
I ended up paying Chasa back for all the pain and suffering she inflicted on me: The largest gift basket I could find online, filled with fruits, candies, and preserves of both Zurulian and human origin.
When I wake up at the start of the paw, my arch-nemesis has sent me two pictures. The first one is a schedule to keep for the next couple of months. In the second picture she’s put pillows and blankets in the basket and is using it as a bed, a paw raised in goodbye.
If the medi-teddies ever learn to weaponize their cuteness, humanity is in real trouble.
Packing is easy. I don’t have a lot. A band shirt from when I went to see ‘Where Angels Fear’, a few bad sketches of fruit, my dad's chess set, my pad, and a neural scanner.

Date [standardized human time]: January 13th, 2137

The space flight actually lands directly in Sweden, somewhere north of the polar circle at a place called Esrange. I immediately realize that winter’s back on the menu, as the cold makes my left leg and arm ache like hell. It’s the dead of night, too… But I’ve missed night. So has everyone else, as despite the cold people are walking straight out into the snow to just stare up into the starry sky and stare in open awe at the sky, where the stars form a backdrop for the northern lights. I join them.
A poetic whimsy falls over me, making me grin at the cheesiness. It’s like the sky itself is welcoming us back home.
From Esrange we take cars to Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city. From there it’s a long train ride south. I’ve gotten a sleeper cabin. With the generous stipend from the UN, I have no need to scrimp.
Even so, it takes significantly longer to travel 1400 kilometers across Sweden than it did to travel 16 light-years from Gliese 832. I’ve got almost twenty hours to appreciate the irony.

Date [standardized human time]: January 14th, 2137

I’m met at the train station in Lund by a man holding a sign with my name on it. His car takes me directly to the university. Everything feels very… ordinary, except I’m a bit dazed at having so many humans around me again.
We arrive a little before 8 in the morning. Excited students scurry to and fro, eager and hopeful for the first day of spring term. The driver is named Markus, and very kindly helps me find my way to my meeting. I’m left outside a door, standing around awkwardly.
The man I’m meeting with is Jonas Falck, and he’s the head of the department of computer science. While the UN has ‘encouraged’ the university to take me in despite it being so close to the term start, the decision remains with him.
I really wanted to see the girls first, but the meeting time was set for me. I desperately wish I had thought to shave beforehand. I’ve been using my beard to hide my weak chin, but it probably looks more unprofessional than-
“Hey, are you Martin Russo?”
Ah, I see.
Mister Falck is holding two cups of coffee and offers one of them to me with a smile. He’s got a full beard, a full belly, hair past his shoulders, and a pink hawaiian shirt to go with his khaki shorts and flip-flops. This man is clearly one of the most talented professionals working in the field today.

“So, do you mind if I ask…” He motions to my cane while I take a seat.
“How that happened?”
“Yes.”
“That’s classified. I’m not even joking.”
He nods once, like that was more or less what he expected to hear. He leans back in his chair, which creaks a bit, and takes a slow drink from his coffee while reading on his computer. “So you studied at Columbia University before the Bombing?”
“Yes.”
“And your family lived in New York?”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” He doesn’t say it unkindly, but he does say it as rote. ‘Oh you’re from one of the places that doesn’t exist anymore? Sorry to hear that.’
I nod awkwardly. “Yes.”
“And you were focusing on studying brain-computer interfacing?”
I feel like a recording. “Yes.”
“It’s very uncommon to add a student this late. The term begins today.”
“Yes.”
“We can’t provide housing for you on such a short notice, for one.”
“I have that handled, sir.”
He scrunches his face up. “Jonas, please. Americans are so formal.”
“Alright, er, Jonas.”
“So, Martin, what I’m asking for is a reason. To take you in right now, I mean, instead of next year.”
I nod. This is thankfully something I had planned for. My hand slips into my pocket, fingering the box holding the scanner electrodes. “Well, Jonas… I think there’s something you should take a look at.”

Handling paperwork and basic orientation takes most of the morning. I manage to get morning-and-evening classes to share my time off with the lambchops. That only works because most people don’t want evening classes. Evenings are for partying if you’re a student, so late classes are mostly for adults with jobs.
I end up standing around nervously by the entrance to the university building, counting down the time. I watch people passing by as calmly as I can, still checking my pad every minute or so for any messages and jerking my head around like a bird at anything that’s even a bit of a shade of gray.
I can tell the alien girls are coming even before I see them, since everyone is glancing curiously their way. I straighten my back and shift my weight from foot to foot. I feel like a dog at an airport, waiting for the return of its owner.
They’re looking around as I see them, and Thiva’s the first to spot me. Her ears perk up and Vilek immediately looks to me as well. As they speed up into a sprint, I’m a bit surprised to see them both wearing clothes. Both girls are wearing custom boots made to fit their digitigrade legs.
They’re both wearing coveralls, Vilek’s in a hospital teal and Thiva’s in a bright red. It’s been explained to me that many at the university have a student culture of wearing colorful coveralls that they decorate with patches, called ‘Ovve’, and that Thiva’s red marks her as a mechanical engineering student. Vileks’s teal, presumably, mark her as studying healthcare. Or specifically therapy, perhaps. I need to look it up.
Seeing as computer science students are apparently expected to wear pink ones, I’m thinking I might sit out this grand and colorful tradition. On the other hand according to the Internet it’s an informal rule to cut a bit from the ‘Ovve’ of anyone you’ve exchanged body fluids with and patch it onto your own. So I suppose I could be convinced.
The girls collide with me, thankfully gently. Their tails are wagging like crazy out of the back of their outfits, and they’re clinging to me. I inhale deeply, take in the distinct and pleasant scent of my cute Venlil friends, and cling to them as well. My fingers stroke through their thick fur, and I hear their happy wordless bleating and whistling.
I close my eyes and enjoy the moment, not giving one whit for the passersby watching the scene.
“Oh, girls, I-” Vilek punches me in the arm unexpectedly. The right one, thankfully.
“Ow!”
Even though her ears signal joy and her tail is wagging, her voice is still stern. “We learned what ‘lambchops’ means!”
Ah.

The student flat isn’t very expansive, but it’s larger than the one we shared on Venlil Prime. Probably because humans are just plain larger.
It’s currently sparsely furnished. There’s a couple of desks, a couch, a table, a beanbag chair, and a bunk bed. I take my shoes off in the hallway, as the girls do. When in Lund.
They help me unpack. There’s not a lot, but they had already set aside a little corner for me. I’ve got the beanbag chair instead of a desk, which I’m perfectly fine with.
I sigh and lean against a wall briefly. “I’m… so glad to be home.”
Thiva turns her head a little, flicking an ear in question. “You missed being on Earth?”
I chuckle, and pinch her ear-tip lightly. I lean over to give Vilek one too, for fairness. It earns me a pair of bleeps from them, and I go on the offensive to rub their heads and scratch their ears and do everything I can to make the lambchops squeal happily. They thankfully oblige. “I missed being with my herd.”
My friends are safe, they’re here with me, and we all have paths forward. I’ve fought and bled for this opportunity. I’m allowed to enjoy it.
I sit down on the couch with a quiet groan of satisfaction, finally getting to put my cane aside. “So, girls… how are you feeling about Earth so far?”
They grumble immediately. “It is so freaking cold!” “Snow! We do not like the snow!”
“It’s only for another couple of… Months.” They’re undressing right in front of me. I am left briefly stunned.
Oh right they don’t normally wear clothes.
Reminding myself of that doesn’t help. The context is what it is. They’re my best friends and my two favorite girls and they’re stripping naked before me.
My brain fails me. “…Okay, so, uhh. Um. Hmmh. Huh.”
Mother of God there’s nothing different! They’re naked. They’re always naked! It hasn’t been a problem on VP, it won’t be a problem here! Man up!
I take a deep and steadying breath and resolutely refuse to think of patches of white and red on a set of pink coveralls, with pink patches on their matching ones.
“I guess we should… buy some food? And some clothes for me to use? And…”
And they turn their heads toward me, staring at me with one eye each. Side by side. Making me feel like I'm being stared down by a single creature. One with forward-facing eyes. And an orange blush.
They take slow steps closer. Thiva speaks first with an amused lilt to her voice. “Or maybe this is a good time to talk. You know, about the house rules.”
Vilek speaks as well, moving her tail sinuously in a teasing motion. “Relationship statuses.”
Thiva comes in with the finisher, practically purring. “Sleeping arrangements.”
Ah.

2023.06.10 19:34 Imaginary_Act5759 Temp. Custody of Minor During Mothers Manic Phase

Good day everyone, just a quick thank you to any and all who read and offer advice. I’ll try to be concise and keep out certain specificities out of respect for the minor involved. My girlfriends little sister is soon to be 18 within less than half a year. Her mother is going through a manic bipolar phase. She has been kicked out of my house, her sons house, her boyfriends house, and her sisters house on different and recent occasions because of stealing, lying, drugs, and manipulation (all of which are well documented and we have weak proof e.I. Things that may or may not be sustainable in court).
My girlfriends sister is living with us while her mother is in and out of a behavioral hospital. The mother is completely okay with this because to an extent we are all cordial and understand this is what’s best for the minor. We are concerned that as the mothers mental health becomes worse and more volatile she may try to take her daughter out of no where and run. She has no job, no place to live, and is living off a government stipend she gets for raising the daughter (daughters father is deceased military so survivor benefits).
We want to explore, the minor emancipating herself (but believe the minor requires a job/ full self sustainability which she lacks). Or a temporary guardianship where myself and my girlfriend become temp guardian as we have a house, are both employed with good jobs, and have been together for nearly 7 years. We believe the mother may be open to this option but want to be prepared if she’s not (want to know what the legal battle may look like if we need to go forward with it).
The final option feels like subterfuge. Keep minimal contact with the mother, keep the mom happy so she doesn’t snap and try to run away with the daughter, for the next half year until the minor is 18.

2023.06.10 19:33 kingofthewalruses Looking for some advice

Hi guys,
Reddit really does have a group for everything you guys are the best. I haven’t been diagnosed with RSS yet but really think I have it. About 3 months ago I was with a girl who ended up testing positive for a yeast infection and since then I’ve had a bunch of symptoms that are consistent with RSS. I have on and off burning (scrotum and near my rectum), a red and often constricted scrotum, a prickly/ dry feeling on my scrotum, I’ve had a rash on my inner groin, some discoloration to the shaft and tip of my penis etc… I’ve been to multiple doctors and specialists and tried a handful of oral and topical meds but nothing really seems to be working. I also did FINALLY test positive for a small amount of gonorrhea after giving a semen sample because of UTI symptoms I’ve been having. This was after multiple negative urine and blood tests (negative on the western blot as well). I guess I am just wondering what I should say to this dermatologist I am seeing in a couple days/ if you guys have any advice. Thank you guys in advance for the help!!

2023.06.10 19:32 Itchy_Principle6434 Lazard Fee Estimation and dates of engagement

Lazard Fee Estimation and dates of engagement
Excited about the dockets last night. Some items I found interesting.
Photo 1: Lazard makes the full 15 million with a sell of most of the companies assets. It then refers to Schedule 1 (photo 2) fees associated with an Other Sale Transaction Fee.
Photo 2: Gives us a general idea on the 15 million number and how that fee came to be.
If we look at the 1 billion dollar line the fee would be 1.30%. If they were to sell only Buy Buy Baby for 1 billion, Lazards fee would be 13 million.
*note that I think this is a standard fee structure from Lazard. Technically if Buy Buy Baby sold for more than 2 billion, the company’s fee would then be north of 23 million.
It would be in Lazards best interest to sell Buy Buy Baby for more than about $1.5 billion if they sell it as it’s own asset.
Photo 3/4: this is nothing new. The dates are highly specific and relate to some dates involving Cohen and Icahn.
8/10/22 Original Engagement Letter
Photo 5: Cohen sold shares within a week of engagement letter.
Not pictured: Cohen tweeted a Purple Heart 💜 on 8/10. A Purple Heart is awarded to people who are injured and/or die in the line of duty. I have my Grandfathers Purple Heart from losing his leg. Was Cohen separated from his shares for the greater good?
10/18/22 Dealer Manager Agreement
Phot 6: Cohen and Icahn picture the night before Dealer Manager Agreement was made .
1/15/23 Prior Engagement Agreement
I don’t have a good picture. However there was a snip of pitch book around this time that a LBO happened. Also (photo 7) along with Holly Etlins letter shows that they were trying to sell the company around that time.
Photo 8: Cohen tweeted he buys all stocks on 1/18.
Few weeks later government shot down his balloon.

Something about the idea that Lisa and Bonny Red might be in any kind of regular communication was… I don’t know. Disturbing. If I had to say it was comparable to anything I knew, the only near example was finding out that Fauve was hiding harassment from [Wolfbeard’s] friends and associates. That’s not even quite right, but… it was just the idea that there was some talk in reference to me that was absent me was just… strange.
Like a vague ominous feeling, almost like a conversation in another language that I don’t speak, spoken in my presence with expressions and gestures hinting that it was about me specifically that the discussion was being had.
It was probably nothing, and I dismissed my own thoughts on the matter, one thing I noticed about the females of both species is that it is sometimes difficult to quite comprehend their thoughts from the male perspective. Disturbing as this instance might have been, on the whole, I found that difference between the sexes to be almost refreshing.
There is something to be said for mystery, for having company that is apart from one’s self. Which does bring me to one other small point about the xenophobes that rose and fell. Their male membership on the whole seemed to hold the females of their species in the highest contempt. The very fact that Fauve was a woman, well, a young girl, was held against her.
In a way, a defining feature of these extremists was that everything had to march in lockstep together, else it had to be subdued or destroyed. In all the reports I read, in all the stories told to me by those who raided their headquarters and training centers and other lairs, only a handful of women found positions of note in their organization. This wasn’t to say no women agreed with these men, but they were all but locked out of participation in any direct manner, more than a few evidently had evidence of abuse on their person.
In a very real sense, the ability to thrive in this world now, was intrinsically tied to our ability to engage in that which made us differ from one another, between our species and our sexes alike, we were happier in just being ourselves.
I doubted xenophobes were ever very happy for very long.
I remained at her apartment that night after a quick call to the Walkers to let them know what I was doing, I still had work to do of course, even though I had AI management tools to do most of the day to day administration of my organizations, I still had to actually handle approvals, but since everything was mobile now, more or less, I could work from damn near anywhere.
I’d borrow some talent from the Barnum Cooperation to handle things while I was away, of course. At least for the last few weeks once we got to our destination.
But until then, this was super easy, barely an inconvenience, as the humans are fond of saying.
Of course, Lisa had questions about what the reason was for me going away. She asked me that, later, and I stretched out and answered her as truthfully as I could. “I can’t really tell you that.”
She cocked her head and raised her eyebrow at me as if to say, ‘Really? After all this?’
So I elaborated, “It’s one of those kinds of things. I’d rather not be a criminal on two worlds, you know. It’s bad enough that somebody on my homeworld has decided I need to be ‘expended’.”
That had her attention. “What’s that?” She asked, why I was leaving was now a secondary concern to her.
Honestly, thinking about it in retrospect, I should have been a lot more afraid than I was. After all, getting rid of ‘problems’ was as humans say ‘par for the course’ for a lot of governments. I had my suspicions about the Earth government’s quashing of the Earth First movement being even more obscure and black operated than I already knew about in the Silent Civil War. Not that I could prove anything, and if I’m being honest, after what they wanted to do to my humans, not that I cared.
It’s a universal truth of all governments that when it comes to their security, they do not mess around, and disruptive elements tend to get some form of unpleasant treatment, even in a near utopian or utopia aspiring state. There’s always something unpleasant in the foundations that nobody sees. How much moreso in the dystopian world of Dlamias?
Bonny Red and her crew were all meant to die in the void, I, had I not gone a different route, would have been offworld for centuries and not brought back until I was old and set in my ways and easily compliant. Even my sister, who more or less slipped under their radar, was put into a job where she would have her spirit essentially eroded.
I don’t know about our father, but as for our mother, I will only say I had little hope that she was living any better now than she was before.
So I took this understanding that I was now an ‘undesirable’ in stride. Not to be overly dramatic, I am not saying my whole government was after me, just that somewhere a bureaucrat decided that it would be better if I were chosen for more ‘dangerous tasks’ and that if something happened to me, things might be ‘safer’ overall. As far as I knew, nobody had been sent to eliminate me personally, though if a team were sent to get in my way eventually, that wouldn’t be a shock.
I looked over at Lisa and my ears all drooped as I explained all that, “You’re not going to have to worry, you’re not in any danger. But… my people have focused on stability for so long that disruptive elements are ‘pruned’. We’re not as crude as humans… as far as I know. I don’t have to worry about being,” I made air quotes, “black bagged, and disappearing into a shallow grave somewhere. It just means that I can start expecting my government to start making more dangerous requests of me until something happens. It’s a very practical way to get rid of trouble, especially since they can’t exile me while I’m elsewhere already anyway.” I huffed, I had to laugh at the situation, I could picture the conversation now…
“Can we exile him?”
“He’s doing this from another planet already, what are we going to do, double exile him?”
“That’s… shocking. I’m… I didn’t know your people could be like that.” Lisa seemed genuinely shocked and the sheets rustled as she brought her knees up to her chest, a genuinely worried look settled on her face.
“We didn’t become the strongest Empire in the galaxy because we’re gentle.” I said and put my hand on her shoulder, “It will be fine. I doubt they’ll do anything overt, I have a practical usefulness to two different governments right now, it’s just one of them is willing to risk losing me. Change is… well it’s hard for us sometimes, and I’ve been introducing a lot of it.”
“So you’re like a scientist bringing technology to the stone age and being declared a witch.” Lisa declared, it was an apt analogy that I would think about quite a lot as time went on. For all my people’s advances, we missed the very idea of therapy and psychiatric treatment, and I still hadn’t forgotten the team of therapists who so bluntly diagnosed my species in a general sense.
In a very real sense, by bringing my people happiness, a concept of wellness, even for all the clear and obvious good it was doing across the board, I might as well be a witch bringing unknown magics to a primitive and superstitious, anxious people.
If I may speculate for a moment, I have seen that humans who struggle most, often mistrust happiness, finding it to be suspicious, waiting for the other shoe to drop, as if happiness is just a setup for the pain to come. As I thought about Livingston, joyless, direct, having nothing but his work… how must it been for him when he first bonded with a human and found that someone genuinely cared for his wellbeing?
Maybe what made me an outlier was that I wasn’t suspicious of happiness, but embraced it, while many of my species, once they found it, didn’t know what to do with it and treated it as a danger. Maybe… Maybe I have grown, just a little.
As I’d let go of my bitterness about what our ancestors did to us, I felt no bitterness or anger toward the nameless background figure who decided my life is best spent at risk. He, like so many others, was so afraid of being taken in by contentment, that he wouldn’t be taken out of whatever darkness held him back. They were clinging to their chains even while I worked to cut them.
That was something to be sad about, more than anything else.
Lisa brightened up. “Well then, if you’re a wicked witch, how about you cast one more spell over me.” She teased, and then her face went blank and eyes unfocused. “Your hypnosis spell hits with a D20, your target is now hypnotized, what do you do now?”
I rolled my eyes, she could never take anything too seriously, even death or danger. It’s no wonder I like humans as much as I do. Even half dead they’re more alive than most of my whole damn species. So…

2023.06.10 19:25 lIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIl_ Pivot to government job?

Hi AusFinance! Not sure the best place to ask this, but I thought I’d try here.
Currently in an entry-level technology sales (outbound SMB SDR) role. Job security is low and stress is high. Both of these are the opposite of what I’ve heard about roles in the government.
As such, I’m toying with the idea of moving over and climbing the ranks in a gov role while I’m early in my career.
  1. Which roles could I apply for, (with experience in sales) and within which government departments?
  2. What would expected salaries look like?
  3. What would career growth look like?
Thanks in advance!
