2023.05.29 02:12 pot8oquing Planning a move from the Midwest to SF for school quick notice
Hey everyone! I’m from the Midwest (IN) and I’m trying to plan a move to SF by late July. It’s all happening really quickly as I just visited and applied to a grad school program in SF earlier this month. There’s a lot I’m trying to figure out in a little bit of time and the biggest question is how to find somewhere to live that I can afford and that I feel comfortable in.
I’ve heard not great things about Tenderloin but that’s where I’m finding apartments closest to my budget. I’m curious if it’s a rough as people make it sound or if it’s a livable place with usual dangers of a big city neighborhood? I didn’t get a chance to look at the neighborhood while I was in town visiting so I wasn’t able to get my own gauge on how it felt. So I’m curious what locals would say.
Also, I’m open to any suggestions for securing housing outside of what comes up on a google search or Craigslist while searching from a different state.
Any neighborhoods to check out? To avoid?

So, I know that others have posted on here complaining about free piles. Allow me to be yet another complaint for just a hot second.
I grew up in a divorced household where I lived part time in the SF Bay, let me tell you the free pile thing never ends well. I've seen junk build up in neighborhoods in the bay area to the point where the community just gives up, and it actually becomes a bad place to live. To the point where it becomes a huge expense to clean the sidewalks and streets. I'm not saying it is anywhere near that bad in Humboldt, but that is often how it starts.
I get that people think they are being well intentioned, but really there are plenty of options other than that, such as dump sites, thrift stores, craigslist, and online groups where you can get rid of free stuff.
Most often no one wants your stuff, and it just sits there for weeks and months out in the rain. It clutters up the sidewalks that people pay taxes to maintain, and use so that their children can ride a three wheel bike on it, or walk, no one wants to walk around your junk pile.
To be real, most of the people doing this need to stop being lazy, and learn how to deal with their own junk as an adult. Your junk being left out is really not doing the world any favors, your just annoying your neighbor.
I'd much rather not have a couch at all then bring one into my apartment that has been sitting out in the rain, smells like cigarettes, and dog piss. I'd also rather my toddler ride his three wheeler on the sidewalk, instead of having to move onto the street with cars to avoid someone's junk pile.
Most often it is the generous neighbors that haul that stuff away. Not long ago a neighbor and I brought a rusty exercise machine, a leaking old fridge, and a gross ripped couch to the dump. It had all been sitting over a month.
Literally no one wants them, and they are not part of nature either. Only a select few have the vehicle capability and generosity to move stuff that size.
I'm not here to argue with anyone. I don't plan on responding to any comments.
Please just keep the community clean, thanks.

2023.05.23 05:42 pokemonastro How to prepare for Shadow Mewtwo and find local community
Hey everyone!
The Reddit community has been great in helping me and my family grind so many legendary Pokémon, so first of all, thank you!! We would like to prepare for shadow Mewtwo this weekend by finding local groups, but not sure where to start. We live in the San Francisco peninsula and I have checked and posted to local Craigslist, but haven’t had any responses.
Where do you go to find local communities to set up raids? Does anyone know of any groups in the SF Bay Area (hopefully the peninsula) that I can link up with?
Thank you so much and I wish everyone great luck this weekend!!

2023.05.18 05:52 ikeamonkey2 Previous landlord reference: what specifically do they want?
I'll be apartment hunting in SF in a few weeks, and as I've begun poking around on Craigslist, Zillow, etc. to get a lay of the land, I've noticed it's fairly common for landlords to want a previous landlord reference included in applications.
I haven't actually been asked for that when applying for apartments before. If you've been asked to provide this before, were they expecting a lettestatement or just my current landlord's phone number? I know renting in SF can be competitive and move quickly, so just trying to come prepared with any materials that can give me a good chance 🤞

2023.05.15 16:46 CookiesatClarks I am pretty positive I have a 6-8 octave singing capability, but I am also disabled and have no direction or support creatively, financially, or otherwise. Please help. Links included (C1?,E2,A6,E7,C#8)
Okay, so I know this must be hard to believe, I hardly believe it myself. But this is 100% real. I can reach notes up E8, and sustain notes up to around C#8. Here is proof, I measured the hz with a tuner app:
G6-C8#. I'm not sure how low I can go, but I speak in the second octave, at extremes I can hit around 10-11 hz when measured with a bass tuner, but it seems unreliable (even on piano and computer). Currently looking for a way to measure lower frequencies.
Here are some clips of me singing:
School - Nirvana,
Back to the Stars - Nicola Sedda.
These covers were recorded and edited in less then an hour each, (and it definitely shows lol) I also live in a small apartment, and although I have my neighbor's permission, it's still hard to be confident (especially in mid range)
I'm not trying to brag or anything. I know these clips aren't the best, and I really need more training, but I can't afford lessons at the moment. I have a disorder that gives me symptoms such as avolition and anhedonia. It is very hard for me to stay motivated, especially when I don't understand how to use sound equipment and I have no one in real life to share it with. I've tried reaching out on Craigslist, but I live in a rural area and I have no car at the moment. I just really want share my love of music and improve, but I don't know how. Would love some advice. Thank you for your time.

2023.05.13 22:00 BarkingFrog Best way to sell car with damaged transmission?
TLDR: 2015 Kia Optima, 138k miles, drives good. Needs lot of expensive replacements including transmission.
Hey guys, a bit lost here so hoping for some guidance. This is my first car and not sure how to sell it without getting taken. Bought a 2015 Kia Optima from a good friend for only $6k about 3 years ago. The car had around 115k miles and was in really good condition.
A year later, I was driving it at night and hit a massive pot hole on a street that was under repairs. Hole was completely unmarked and filed a claim with the city (NYC). Nothing came of it and I should have followed up. That's on me.
6 months ago making the drive from NYC to SF for a new job and have a similar situation. Prior to the week long drive, I took the car in for inspection and besides some warping under the car, they said its completely fine. On the drive out West, hit another pot hole and this was much worse. Engine block cover (heavy plastic part that covers the "guts" of the car lol) fell off and we were able to reattach it with zip ties.
Last week, I took the car into a Kia Service center for a standard check up and the report was not good. Already had a second inspection with similar results.
Report is as follows: "...When vehicle is shifted from park to drive, felt engine had excessive movement. Had another tech inside vehicle and made tech hold on brake, gas, and put vehicle in drive, and reverse. Notice that the engine and transmission have movement. Raise vehicle up, saw that the sub-frame is damaged, and that the transmission is leaking fluid. Check transmission fluid level, found that the fluid level is low. At this time would recommend to replace transmission, engine and tranny mounts, and dog bone mount, sub-frame, both lower control arms, steering rack, perform alignment, and lower engine cover. Engine, body, interior are all in good condition."
The guys at the shop gave a ballpark estimate of $4-5k for parts and similar cost for labor. At that point, it will cost more to replace than the car is worth.
Took the car home (drove fine), and began posting online looking for a buyer. Offers are abysmal (a few hundred to a thousand. Did a carmax quote online and received an offer for $3,200, however no ability to mention the damage on the online report, and I worry that once I take it there for an inspection, they are going to give me a similar sub $1,000 offer.
I guess I'm wondering how I would go about trying to sell this for more than just a few hundred, or is that a pipedream? I see that the same car (in obvious working condition) is in the range of $8-13k in California (Bay Area).
The car still drives completely fine and I still need it to get to the office a few days a week, so wondering if I should just keep using it for when I have to and keep entertaining offers via craigslist and marketplace? Really lost here and stressed over finances and the need to buy a new car, so sorry if the answer is obvious but I'm being too stubborn to see.
Thanks guys.

2023.05.12 23:30 kyleyeats Selling a classic car?
Does anyone in SF like classics? It uses both a driver and gasoline. It's been sitting a while, so I'd like to find a buyer that knows what to do there.
I know the 'classic' answer is craigslist but I really just want to avoid that whole mess.

2023.05.10 03:50 No_Pop_4569 Finding an apartment in San Francisco in 5 days -- doable?
I am moving to San Francisco in a month, and I was planning to give myself five days in an Airbnb to find an apartment.
I had hoped to sign a lease remotely, before arriving in SF, but none of the apartments in the areas I'm interested in were willing to do that.
Is it realistic to find an apartment this quickly, if I search on craigslist and other sites during this time?
Thank you, I've been having a surprisingly hard time finding somewhere to sign a lease, when I'm so far away from SF.
edit: thanks for all the advice, kind people of SF ❤️

2023.05.08 19:46 flankie2 Bike for a week in San Francisco. Any advice?
I’ve got a work trip to an archives conference at the California Academy of Sciences. I’ve booked my wife and two teenage kids into a hotel in union square so they can have a trip and maybe we can see some stuff together when I’m not looking at natural history specimens.
I’ve got to get myself from union square to golden gate park every morning. I commute 9 miles each way through centre of london on a bicycle and figure the bike looks the best option in San Francisco. In london I’d get a 2 hour 5 day lime bike pass for about $15. I can’t see anything similar in SF, just two hour hire for a tourist trip across the bridge (which il definitely do as well) Those scooters scare me. Do I have take the bus? I have seen some service bikes on Craigslist for $100. Any suggestions? Also am I getting too excited about the Latin Carnival, and am I right in going to The Filmore just because I heard it mentioned on a Frank Zappa record?

2023.05.06 05:02 futurebro NY to SF move, server jobs, neighborhoods, gay stuff?
Im considering moving from NYC to SF to follow my bf who im so in love with. I've never considered moving or moving to SF before but I am starting to think it could be good for me (i have family in LA and WA, and have been feeling ground down after 7 years in nyc). I have a few questions...
- I would probably find a job as a restaurant server. I have 6 years of experience in nyc at some very nice, although not "fine dining" spots. I'm also very knowledgeable about beer and wine, and I'm also pretty cute and charming haha. Any advice on finding a good restaurant job, any neighborhoods to check out? For example I work in the West Village which is prime over priced restaurant area. And if any servers could weigh in on how much you generally make per shift? Right now I make 180-200 on an average night, up to 300 on a busy night. But taxes generally eat my hourly pay, so 800 for 3-4 shifts a week is average.
-What neighborhoods should I look at living in? My bf will be subletting in the castro for the first few months before finding his own place. I'm totally ok with roommates. I will be relying on public transport and also want to be close to him. Would love a neighborhood with a lot of queer or creative people. Neighborhoods I love in NYC for reference are Bushwick, Ridgewood, Astoria, Washington Heights. I'm not afraid of "up and coming" areas. I would like to live as cheaply as possible under 1,200 if possible. My studio in nyc is 1500 and i feel financially burdened by it. Luckily my bf will be making close to 180k, so hopefully he picks up the dinner tab a few times haha. It sounds like craigslist is the norm for finding a room?
-A little about me for reference. Im 30 white guy, love movies, theatre, comedy. I work occasionally as an actor and have agents in LA and NY, would be interested in getting into the local theatre scene here. I love food, love to go dancing occasionally, I dont drink much anymore but can appreciate a night of vodka sodas and dancing til 2 am. I am excited at the idea of being close to nature as well. And like to lift weights and go to yoga classes. I am also excited to connect with a new queer community.

2023.05.05 22:30 MonkHarris Places to run a reactive dog in SF Bay Area
I have two Australian Shepherds, one is 2 1/2 years old and the other is 1. The younger pup has extreme anxiety and global fear. He has been on 3 medications since he was 4 months old. We have done an incredible amount of training together. I am looking for any places that the three of us can go to together to exercise. This could be a beach, trail, field, park, etc. I have used Sniff Spot, written to folks with private land, gone to places at 6am hoping to see no one else, and posted on Craigslist and Nextdoor for advice. Now I am here. Does anyone in the SF Bay Area know of any places we can access where we wont run into anyone else or places we can rent? I am doing all I can to support these two puppers and exercise on a regular basis makes a huge different. Thanks for any and all suggestions you have! We truly appreciate it.

2023.05.02 07:33 confusionoverme Moving to SF from Chicago
Hi!! I'm moving from Chicago to San Francisco for graduate school in July. I haven't started the process yet because I'm getting many mixed messages. My initial thought was to reach out to realtors that can help find an apartment without me having to go to SF to see it in person because I just don't think I'd be able to do that right now. Everyone is saying that's just not how it's done on the west coast. In Chicago, realtors are always available to help find apartments and l'm at a loss for what to do. Looking on the apps, Craigslist, and Facebook groups is so overwhelming and I need someone to help me narrow things down. Any advice?
Looking for: 1-2 bedrooms within walking distance of USF (30 min or so)
Allows small dogs
Budget $3.3K

2023.04.25 02:51 now___here east bay studio apartment?
so, I live with roommates in oakland and work in food service in sf. I know it's normal (at least, for the circles I'm in) to live with roommates well into adulthood in the bay area, but lately I've been dreaming of finding my own studio in the next few years. I've never lived on my own before, so browsing craigslist and zillow for rentals (just for ideas) has been a little daunting. a few questions:
is it even realistic to find a berkeley or oakland studio undearound $1700/mo? with a bathroom, refrigerator, oven/stove, and laundry in the building? close-ish to public transit? if not, what is a more realistic price point?
are all property management companies horrible, like the reviews say? does anyone have good recommendations or ones to stay the fuck away from? pros and cons of mom n pop landlords vs. companies? how do I find listings from mom n pop landlords anyways? are there other housing groups/boards I should be browsing? facebook?
my credit score is ~670 and I've already started saving money, my goal is to save up a year's worth of rent in place of making 2.5-3x rent, because I don't think my hourly food service wages will ever amount to 3x my rent. I cannot get a second food service job for health reasons, but I am trying to find a self-employed side craft/gig that fits into my life, because I know those savings will go quickly. is this an unsustainable plan? should I try to find a better paying job first?
thanks!!
fun side question I just thought of: is there a cheaper, equally diverse and queer city I should consider moving to? not far from the pacific ocean? I am a QPOC and I would like to feel safe :) I wouldn't mind if it was a little smaller than the bay, even

2023.04.24 22:48 ImNotaGod Where to sell old gear? (US)
| Hi airsoft, Sorry if the question violates any rules but, my brother moved out of my moms house and out of state and left ~150lbs of guns & gear at her house. He has told my mom she is free to sell it and keep the money but shes having a hard time trying to find places to list it. Fb/NextdooCraigslist have all taken down listings. I’m looking for online forums where they can be listed or retail stores (sf Bay Area) that would either buy them as a lot or sell them on consignment. There are multiple AR style rifles as well as 2 gas powered pistols. The guns/gear is pretty high quality so if hate to see it end up in the dump. Any suggestions would be amazing. I added some photos to give an idea of the type and quality. submitted by ImNotaGod to airsoft [link] [comments] |
2023.04.20 18:17 college_reddit Finding a summer sublet in SF (Closer to Financial District)
Hey,
I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to find a summer sublet in SF? I’ve been looking on Craigslist and Facebook, but there seems to be few options and most people on Craigslist seem very shady.
I need a place from May 20th - August 20th, closer to the financial district (was thinking Nob Hill, Russian Hill, SOMA areas). I’m looking for either a 1 BR / 1 BA place for myself, or a 2 BR place for my roommate and I.
Anyone have advice or know or anything available? Really lost and with time winding down not sure where to go. Thanks!

2023.04.13 10:09 AdministrationLow759 Moving to Sunnyvale for a 12 week (3 month) summer internship + some questions about living/commuting/etc.?
Hey everyone! So I'm moving to the area for an internship at Juniper Networks (1103 Innovation way, Sunnyvale, CA). So naturally I've been doing research on where I'll be living, how I will be commuting from place to place, budgeting, etc. I've also found and read various threads on Reddit already (like
https://www.reddit.com/AskSF/comments/t92hu4/received_internship_offer_in_sf_how_do_i_go_about/ and
https://www.reddit.com/AskSF/search?q=intern+housing&restrict_sr=on). With all that said, I have several questions:
- How is the public transportation in Sunnyvale? Busy? Readily Available? Safe at night?
- Is it worth buying a super cheap car on FB marketplace that's low on mileage (this one I found is $180 lol.)? I also saw this post about bringing a car to Sunnyvale, but not sure I feel overall about getting a car for a temporary arrangement.
- I'm 100% aware housing is expensive in the bay area. So even though Juniper gave me $1500/month housing stipend, I'm willing to spend over that amount for a suitable place to live. Would staying at an Extended Stay hotel like this be an quick, safe, and easy option to pick? If I stay the entire 3 months, it evens out to be ~$8,626.81 which is well over my $1500*3 = $4500 stipend lol (but my hourly salary will definitely be able to cover that)
- Would it be a good compromise to live a cheap place for half the summer and then live at a more expensive place to myself (studio/1 bed) for the other half of the summer? (After living with multiple roommates for ~5 years (since high school), honestly, I'm a little sick of it. And personally, it would be nice to have a place to live by myself. The obvious drawback being the cost of living alone).
- So far I've been looking at Craigslist, FB marketplace, FB Bay area-related groups and apartments. I unfortunately know very little people from the Sunnyvale area whom could help me out with my living situation (and also my first time in the Bay Area as well). Are there any other resources y'all recommend? And any scams + notes I should be vigilant of?
If there's anything else y'all would recommend, please don't hesitate to comment down below. Thank you!
