2023.06.10 21:57 Cool-Ad-9455 First Pen Show - Notes to self
I visited my first pen show last Sunday and just wanted to leave some observations.
What I enjoyed most is that you can hold a pen, look at its features, design, filling mechanism and overall weight and inspect the nib. Ask questions about the fountain pens. Look at what interests others and ask them what they like. Perhaps they like something you haven’t considered. Prices were reasonable as well and was able to get some fountain pens for last year’s prices (all vendors seem to be raising prices this year, by several hundred $/€).
Some fountain pens will look fantastic online (honeycomb) and neh in the wild… a pen show takes care of that in a heartbeat!
I also noticed that some brands like the Omas are (excuse my ignorance) overly hyped. I found them really light, material nice but nothing wow, trim very thin and prices trough the roof. In my opinion if you like Arco then get a Montegrappa Extra (Otto) Custom with the Shiny Lines celluloid or a Zebra pattern and have a fountain pen that can be serviced and has guarantee…
It also became clear to me that, just like online platforms, you don’t necessarily find the best fountain pens out there on a pen show. Perhaps people tend to hold on to the really nice pens and offload what they don’t want. For example if you have a good M100x or M80x with EF nib it’s just a beautiful pen to write with, but on eBay you will hardly find a EF nib on the listed Pelikans, most will have a M nib, that says something.
So you really have to be on the lookout not to buy someone else’s disappointment. Some fountain pen collections presented on a show could be a graveyard of unwanted pens of sorts. So you really have to pay attention to the practicality of what you are holding. I use all my fountain pens, so I consider useability, it is key.
The pen show also prompted me to re-arrange my collection. I have many Japanese pens because they are almost always perfect, so low risk for a online purchase and import. They can also be very … well boring design wise (should say timeless classics). The pen show allowed me to purchase some nice fountain pens that I did not consider before but that are stylish timeless objects, with heavy use of silver and colorful celluloid or acrylics.
Anyway, let me know your pen show takeaways, and thanks for reading.
I will go again next year and save up for the event.

2023.06.10 21:53 bigletterb Looking for friends m20
Yeah, bit of an emasculating post. As far as I can tell, this is within the rules of the sub, but if not I apologize. I also apologize that this post is so verbose and poorly structured. So I'm from St George, but I did high school in Vegas and my folks moved back here right as I was going away for college. Hence, I dont really have friends around here, and when I'm home for the Summer I don't have much to do. I'm mostly either at home or work, and the people I work with are nice but are all a lot older than me and kind of in different life stages. So if anybody in my general age range is interested in hanging out some way or another, please do reach out.
Things about me: I play the guitar a bit. I'm into folk/punk/DIY music, old style country, and an eclectic range of other stuff. Favorites include The Mountain Goats, AJJ, Jason Isbell, Pat the Bunny, My Chem, Days n Daze, Neutral Milk Hotel, John Prine, Simon/Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, and more hippie shit. I collect fountain pens for a hobby; besides that my hobbies are standard stuff. I watch anime and cartoons and youtube and whatever, ykwis.
I go to college in Ohio, studying Philosophy and History. If for some reason you want to hear my takes on Sartrean phenomenology or Kant, I will happily provide them.
I guess my politics are relevant. I'm not here to start a fight, but my politics are left. Like, left of left. And my politics are a reflection of my deeply held moral values. I believe all people deserve housing, food, and healthcare, that all workers deserve to live in comfort and dignity, that it is wrong to beat and/or murder people for wearing a dress while having a penis or for being in this country without documentation, that small government shouldn't mean the government never does anything to help people while still having a massive and brutally violent police/military force, and that corporate oligarchy sucks ass. Indeed, I believe it is a problem that any of these issues are politically controversial. People who do not share these values in some degree may struggle to get along with me.
I also frequently participate in recreational activities of a hemp-derived character. So people who are into that sort of thing might like to reach out! People of all genders/presentations and of all other creeds are welcome to reach out. THIS IS NOT A HOOKUP OR DATING REQUEST. It is particularly easy for me to meet at the mall.
So if this post gives the impression that I'm ever so slightly a loser, that impression is not unreasonable. But I try to be a nice enough fellow, and if that's enough for you to give vibing with me a chance, I'd like to hear from you.

2023.06.10 21:49 Sure-Leg-6769 Casting a concrete column - what type of (if any) reinforcement does this need?
| I created a mold that is roughly octangular. ~4.75" wide x 30" long. The goal here is to support the basin for a birdbath/fountain which I've already casted. The intent behind the pipe is to provide access for a water line (in case I want to make it an actual fountain) and reduce the overall weight slightly. The steel portion is how I'm planning to mount the basin (which has a hole in the middle due to casting process). I'm just planning to use standard quickrete. My question is does this need reinforcement and if so what would be optimal? I have a bunch of the green plastic garden fencing but I assume that wouldn't be suitable. https://preview.redd.it/1tv515rbu85b1.jpg?width=1078&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c6671b0df1461bf132fd0cbabe8f23e85aa6dc5 submitted by Sure-Leg-6769 to DIY [link] [comments] |

The Pilot Ishime is a urushi hand lacquered brass fountain pen, using the "Kawari-nuri" technique, which means "unique painting". The word “Ishime” is roughly translated to “stone path” which is represented on the cap and barrel as the design is hand drawn into the wet lacquer. This fountain pen has a #10 sized 18k gold nib. A Pilot Con-70 converter is included, but you can also use proprietary Pilot ink cartridges if you prefer. It comes packaged in a wooden box.

2023.06.10 21:44 elliewilli Can’t find the final STB scene on Crazy June, does anyone know if it’s anywhere?
I tried searching Orient, Fountain, Outdoor, Tree, and didn’t come up with this final STB scene. Is it available anywhere? Or am I just totally overlooking it on Crazy June?

2023.06.10 21:41 hisAffectionateTart Journal with best paper?
I recently changed from my now full journal to a new one and it really stinks for fountain pen use. It’s almost as if the paper is coated so the ink doesn’t flow like it should. I scribbled a bit in the old journal, thinking it was the pen but it wasn’t. Any ideas? I like something near 8x11-ish.

2023.06.10 21:35 Personal-Garbage3462 Pens on planes
I am taking a 2.5 hour domestic flight tomorrow and I wanted to know how fountain pens behave on planes and if I should be weary. Is it okay for them to contain ink? They would all be in my carry on
The pens I plan on bringing consist of
- waterman from staples
- Gravitas pocket pen
- Pilot vanishing point
- Pilot custom 823
