2023.06.05 04:50 harry-jg How to Make Your VPN Undetectable and Avoid VPN Blocks

You've armed yourself with a VPN to guard your online exploits, making your browsing, streaming, and torrenting more elusive than Bigfoot himself. Thanks to your VPN's Fort Knox-level encryption, network overlords and ISPs are left scratching their heads, unable to spot which corners of the web you've been poking around in or what files you've been downloading. But there's one problem - they can still sense your VPN, like an invisible yet palpable phantom in the room. Lucky for us, there are several methods in the vault to make a VPN as undetectable as a needle in a haystack.
Scanning through the swathes of online advice on rendering your VPN undetectable is a bit like diving into a murky sea of misinformation, half-truths, and wild guesses. So, armed with a spirit of relentless curiosity, I donned my digital Sherlock Holmes hat and set out on a weeks-long fact-finding mission. My tools? Piles of articles, guides, and VPN support articles, numerous conversations with VPN customer service detectives, my personal expertise and experience, and multiple rounds of good ol' fashioned testing.
The result? This guide. Consider it a condensed field guide to making your VPN connection as elusive as a chameleon (well, to some extent). And because we're not half-baking things here, I've also included my personal recommendations for the top-tier VPNs that can deftly sidestep VPN detection and blockade like a pro.
The Art of Invisible VPNing: A Guide to the Why
Why would you want to render your VPN invisible, you might ask? Well, as much as I admire transparency, in the realm of VPNs, stealth pays off. Here's why.
In the case of a VPN block party - nations like China, Iran, and Indonesia have often been known to use their cutting-edge technology prowess to sniff out and thwart VPN connections. Even educational institutions and workplaces sometimes employ firewalls as bouncers, keeping VPNs at bay.
Secondly, who doesn't love a good streaming spree? Unfortunately, streaming sites often act like a suspicious bouncer, routinely rooting out and blocking VPN connections due to licensing red tape. But if you can make your VPN connection as invisible as a ghost, you could swan dive into your favorite shows from anywhere with a VPN.
Lastly, it's all about privacy, isn't it? Although your VPN's encryption acts like a cloak of invisibility, preventing your ISP from seeing your digital shenanigans, your ISP can still sense the presence of a VPN. Also, websites can sometimes recognize VPN IP addresses. In the name of privacy, some folks just prefer not to broadcast to their ISPs or visited sites that they're employing a VPN. After all, a good magician never reveals his secrets.
An Invisible Surfing Spree: Selecting the Right VPN
The most straightforward path around those pesky VPN detection dogs and firewall barricades is to employ a VPN that's adept at playing hide and seek. What you're really looking for is a VPN that changes its IP address as often as a chameleon changes color, expertly cloaks its VPN traffic, and offers an impressive suite of security and privacy features.
After sending several VPNs through a gauntlet of tests, I came to the conclusion that ExpressVPN should be your first port of call if you want to cruise the internet undetected — here's the evidence:
The master of disguise, ExpressVPN, seems to have a revolving door for IP addresses. During my test-run of its New York server, I noticed a different IP address each time, as if I was flipping through a book of random digits. The prowess of ExpressVPN is further demonstrated by its ability to grant you access to top-tier streaming platforms and its seamless operation even in countries with internet restrictions tighter than a tick.
Also, it supports Tor over VPN connections, adding another layer of camouflage to your VPN's IP address.
Your data and privacy are guarded like crown jewels with its no-logs policy and a suite of advanced security features, including robust leak protection, all backed up by audits.
Shuffling the Deck: Switching Your VPN’s IP Address
When a streaming giant or network sleuth has put your VPN's IP address on the blacklist, you'll need to give your VPN server's IP a makeover to sidestep this little roadblock. The most straightforward approach? Simply reconnect to the VPN server or waltz over to a different VPN server.
Certain VPNs come with in-built tools that permit you to shuffle the server's IP address like a deck of cards. Others, with a flair for automation, do the reshuffling for you — unobtrusively changing the IP address while you're sailing through the VPN server, akin to a magician who never reveals his tricks. Take VyprVPN for example, it has a trick up its sleeve known as the Chameleon protocol. This obfuscation tool is a master of disguise, seamlessly changing your IP address mid-journey without as much as a hiccup in your VPN connection.
Musical Chairs: Juggling Your VPN Protocol
Sometimes, in a land of restrictions and watchful network overseers, certain VPN protocols can be halted in their tracks if the ports they love to party in are shut down. They can also be outed and barred by a savvy bouncer known as Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). Your ticket out of this restrictive soiree is a simple protocol switcheroo.
If you find yourself grappling with port blocks, OpenVPN or WireGuard could be your new best pals. Should their default stomping grounds be barred, you can manually shepherd them to a different port — a tour WireGuard is prepared for with thousands of options, and OpenVPN is not far behind. Some VIPs on the VPN scene, such as ExpressVPN and PrivateVPN, have taken it a step further. They've programmed these protocols to play nice with ports that are hard to put in lockdown, saving you the hassle of handpicking a port. Quite the lifesaver if you're new to the shindig.
Playing Hide-and-Seek with Your VPN
Obfuscation, or as I like to call it, the "VPN invisibility cloak", wraps your VPN traffic in an extra layer of encryption, making it appear as unassuming as your run-of-the-mill internet traffic. It's your best defense against the ever-probing eye of DPI detection and blockade.
While a fair share of VPNs come with access to protocols that are masters of disguise, a select few have a built-in obfuscation feature that doesn't require them to borrow from the protocols they use. TunnelBear, for example, has its GhostBear feature, and PrivateVPN boasts StealthVPN. Activate these tools, and your VPN data magically transforms into regular, everyday internet traffic. Abracadabra, your online activities have just pulled a Houdini!
Opening the 443 Doorway: A Sneak into Internet Autobahn
If VPN-related ports seem like they are sealed tighter than a sous-vide bag, it's high time you make a run for TCP port 443. This magical portal is the very same used by HTTPS traffic, which pretty much is the main freeway for most of our internet travels. If an ISP or network overlord dared to barricade this gateway, they might as well bid adieu to all websites that use HTTPS – say, those tiny, irrelevant sites like Facebook, Google, Twitter, and YouTube. Imagine the uproar!
However, this precious TCP port 443 is only compatible with a select few VPN protocols:
OpenVPN, the people's champion of protocols for its robust security, is one of them. Some VPN providers like Private Internet Access let you pick TCP port 443 when you’re feeling the OpenVPN groove. Others, like ExpressVPN, streamline the process, automatically pairing OpenVPN with TCP port 443.
SSTP, a protocol not as widely embraced, uses TCP port 443 by default. But it's hard to find, tucked away in the menus of only a few VPN providers like IPVanish.
Then, there's SoftEther. This protocol is like the unicorn of VPN services - you hear of it, but you barely see it, primarily because it's as tricky to integrate into the VPN client as untangling your headphones after they've been in your pocket.
The High-Roller IP: A Reserved Seat in the VPN Concert
In the world of VPNs, shared IP addresses are the norm, akin to the nosebleed section in a concert - you share the space (or IP in our case) with a gaggle of other VPN users. But what if you fancied a front-row experience? Enter: the dedicated IP address. This VIP seat, exclusive to you, ensures that you don't share the IP spotlight with anyone else. It's like renting your own private island in the vast VPN sea.
Should you opt for a dedicated IP, streaming sites might struggle to detect your VPN connection. Picture this: instead of identifying a mob of 100+ people logging in from the same IP address (quite the red flag for shared IPs), websites would witness only a lone user logging in. Less conspicuous, less likely to be flagged and blocked.
If a dedicated IP address whets your appetite, Private Internet Access and CyberGhost VPN are solid options. They both roll out the red carpet of dedicated IPs for a nominal additional fee. For those of you scrimping, PrivateVPN is a sensible choice, providing free access to dedicated IP addresses.
Moreover, some VPNs, such as TorGuard, even offer dedicated residential IP addresses, the crème de la crème of detectability. These IPs belong to residential ISPs rather than data centers, making them appear as regular internet users to anyone scrutinizing these IPs. However, fair warning, TorGuard’s VPN plans tend to be on the pricier side. It's akin to paying for box seats at the opera, not exactly penny-pinching.
The Tor-tuous Trail: A VPN Voyage to the Dark Side
Tor, a cloak-and-dagger network that grants passage to the infamous dark web, is like a secret labyrinth. It leads your traffic through multiple servers, engaging in some digital masquerade, frequently changing your IP and encrypting your traffic repeatedly. The best part? It’s like a secret society with no membership fee. Simply download and install the Tor browser and you have a ticket to the Tor network.
Here's a trick up the sleeve: you can snake a Tor connection through a VPN connection. This nifty move ensures internet and dark web hotspots are none the wiser about your VPN IP address. The VPN connection, draped in several layers of Tor encryption, would be harder to detect than a chameleon on a Jackson Pollock painting. In essence, your connection path looks a bit like this:
You, then VPN, then Tor Server #1, Tor Server #2, Tor Server #3, and finally, the Dark Web.
Several top-shelf VPNs support the Tor over VPN connection, with ExpressVPN garnering my personal favor due to its impressively quick speeds. Because let's face it, Tor over VPN connections often move at the pace of a snail riding a turtle. Proton VPN also deserves an honorable mention, boasting servers in 7 countries that automatically route your traffic through the Tor network. This unique setup lets you access dark web sites with pedestrian browsers like Chrome and Firefox — no need to whip out the Tor browser.
Playing Hooky with your VPN: A Cellular Strategy
You know how workplaces and institutions of learning morph into fun sponges with their stringent anti-VPN rules on their networks? And getting caught using one can earn you an unceremonious trip to the principal's office or worse.
In such a tricky situation, it's time to tap into the untamed frontier of mobile data. By flipping the switch to your cellular data, you're using the network of your telecommunications provider instead of the school or company's network. It's like swapping the 'schooled' network's version of domesticated, house-trained internet for the wild, VPN-friendly terrain of mobile data.

2023.06.05 03:10 Spiralbeacher Just friends

So I occasionally work at a live music venue and became friendly with a woman that does the same. One night after my shift I decided to enjoy the show and took a seat. Shortly thereafter the woman came in and took the seat next to me. We chatted up a storm and discovered we had a lot in common, and then she asked if I liked to dance. We jumped on the dance floor and danced to 5-6 songs; it was great flirty fun and I was thinking that this might be the start of something terrific.
When the music ended I asked if I could take her out sometime soon. She replied “I think we should just be friends.” I was rather perplexed given the vibe of the preceding 90 minutes.
I later learned that she has a boyfriend, and I’m curious why she didn’t just tell me that?
EDIT: there seems to be a lot of angry people on this sub that want to take an innocent question about dating behaviour and twist it into something nefarious. I hope you can find peace.

2023.06.05 03:06 registered_rep Local Band/Musician Tiers

After really putting some effort into my playing over the past 5 years, and reading a lot posts in this sub that I have went through myself, I wanted to share a tier system that I’ve developed to help musicians evaluate where they currently are, and what they might need to work on to advance.
Disclaimer: Like most things, there aren’t always solid lines. Bands or musicians may always play up or down a tier, but you most likely will never see a Tier 1 musician looking for jam sessions on Craigslist, or a Tier 3 band play the Heart Association Banquet.
Disclaimer 2: This system is geared towards local, semi pro bands, and doesn’t account for Nashville Session Musicians, Platinum Artists, etc..
Tier 1: These are the band’s that seem to play at every high profile gig in town. The Cancer Society Ball, city food truck festival, etc, in addition to Casino dates, and larger bar and club venues. Tier 1 bands typically pay well, and thus have the first pick of musicians. Tier 1 musicians are experienced, have excellent chops, are professional, catch on fast, work well with others, and dress fashionably and appropriately for the gig.
Tier 2: Tier bands typically play in bars, clubs, and back yard parties on a regular basis. There are many musicians with Tier 1ability that find themselves in Tier 2 bands because of non-musical issues that exclude them from the top tier, such as substance abuse problems, shitty attitudes, a weird look, style of dress, or personality - or just an overall lack of professionalism. Most 2nd Tier musicians are playing for the love of playing music, a little bit of cash, and a cheeseburger.
Tier 3: “Let’s get together and Jam sometime!” Is the motto of the Tier 3 musician. The Tier 3 musician has a sweet jam room with everything that you need for a good jam, ready to go. Seriously, just grab a six pack and come over sometime to jam dude! Many Tier 3 musicians have years, even decades of Tier 1 and 2 experience, but for family or other reasons, prefer the comfort of home to a smokey bar or tour bus. Other musicians that find themselves in the 3rd tier don’t have the chops and/or experience, are new to the scene and aren’t yet known in the musician community, or lack the other characteristics that bands are looking for in a working musician. Musicians in the 3rd Tier are the most active on Craigslist and social media looking to start or join a band. Tier 3 musicians may occasionally find a backyard or bar that will let them set up their gear and play for free.
Tier 4: Tier 4 is a beginning musician that is currently self teaching or taking lessons, but isn’t currently playing with other musicians.
How can you use this information? As you move through your musical journey, continually take an honest look at yourself. Do you treat people well? Are you building good reputation?
It also helps to have perspective. Until you reach the top tier, you have to be willing to accept some flaws. As a solid resident of the 2nd tier, I always tell myself:" If they were perfect, they wouldn’t be playing with me!"

2023.06.05 02:47 7dear Why you should never invite a toxic parent to your wedding

This is by far not the only story I have of my toxic mother, but it's a good one. Sadly, even tho I cut her out of my life I am still dealing with the ramifications of her abuse years later.
Let me preface this by saying I am estranged from my mother and have been for most of my life. She is a paranoid narcissist, a racist, a homophobe, a xenophobe, and just all around terrible person. She abused me growing up so I cut loose in high school, got emancipated and got on with my life. For years I had a happy queer relationship with another woman and we had a son together (I carried with a sperm donor). When my kid was 5 his other mom died and I was alone for 5 years before I met someone. A year later, that someone and I got married. Previous to said wedding my husband’s parents felt it would be important to meet my parents. My father died when I was 19 so that left my mother and her husband. I struggled over the decision to try and reconnect with my mom, knowing how bad this can get for me in these situations (I suffer severe ptsd from the abuse trauma).. but it was a wedding and everyone kept telling me it “was important to have family together.” So fine, let’s do this.
The problems started fast and furious. My mom came to our coast (we live on opposite coasts) to meet my fiancé and my son. Right away she was pulling my husband to the corner to tell him all the “dirt” she could on me, or conversely, telling him he better get me nice cars and plastic surgery. Then she stated calling all of her friends and putting my fiancé on the phone to “prove to them that her daughter was marrying a doctor” (even if he is a goyem (a Yiddish term for non-Jew. Has slightly derogatory tones). Cut to lunch and my mother is asking how many tables she “gets” at the wedding. I ask “huh?” She explains she needs a least 5 tables at 10 per table for HER guests. I was really confused. I explained that our whole wedding venue seated 50 people total and those seats were spoken for. I had invited several people my mother asked me to have already. She went absolutely bananas demanding we change venue (we’re now 6 weeks from the wedding) to accommodate HER GUESTS. I painfully explained we can’t do that.. it’s not possible.. just no. She then switches gears like she always does and asks about our honeymoon. We’re we’re heading to Mexico for 2 weeks and my son would be staying with his donomyBFF. My mom screamed “what??? He needs to be with HIS FAMILY.” I reminded her that he was staying with family. She demanded time with my son so I half heartedly said she could have him half the time. (This will come back to haunt me later.)
Cut to the wedding. Did I mention my mom is a low key alkie? So it’s about 2pm and she’s in the bridal suite in the bathroom. I’m in the dress and the photographer is waiting for my mother to come and use an antique button-holer to button up my gown. I'm emotional because I'm in the dress and I feel beautiful and I'm excited and nervous. This is one of the photos we had pre-planned to take and I asked her if she wanted to do the honors. Instead, my mother is in the bathroom half dressed with her fireball and ice screaming into the phone at her husband “You are so stupid, how can you not find it!? I put it on the damn dresser! I can’t f**ing believe I married you…” you get the picture. It’s so loud the guests in the living room of the suite can hear it. I finally give up and have my son do the buttonholing for me (the pics were so special). Thank goodness it wasn’t video because you would have her my mother screaming “Can anyone get me another drink?? Does this room even have room service??”
Cut to walking down the aisle. We do the ceremony, it’s perfect, and my delightful friend who's officiating announces “Introducing Mr. & Mrs Jon— when suddenly my mom stands up and screams “It’s DOCTOR not MISTER, get it right!” Now I knew we had a problem on our hands ahead of the big day so I put in some contingency plans in place to buffer her. My wedding planner was under strict instructions to not allow my mother to make a speech (she loves to humiliate me by saying personal things about me to anyone who will listen and then she loves to announce what a terrible daughter I am and how much of a disappointment to her.) Second plan was my SIL faking a heart attack if she got her hands on the mic. About half thru dinner my delightful planner comes to me crying saying she’s so sorry but my mom is demanding to make a speech. That’s right, this tiny demon of a woman made my wedding planner CRY. Right then she stood up (have no idea how she got the mic) and said, “So my daughter didn’t want me to say anything. I guess she gets embarrassed, but I’m her MOTHER, and I get to say whatever I want. I’m here to say that I always knew she was going to marry a doctor, it didn’t surprise me at all. What did surprise me is when I gave birth to her and the nurses told me she was a girl, but I didn’t believe them so I had to take her diaper off and spread her legs and look at her vagina to make sure she was a girl.” She illustrated this by spreading her two fingers open. You could here jaws dropping around the room. She then went on to say “how disappointed she was in me that I don’t see her more often and that she hopes now that I have a doctor husband I’ll be able to see her more frequently”. Sadly my SIL was in the loo and plan 2 failed.
Cut to the dancing. I am dancing with my husband and my friends. We’re all having a good time when somebody comes up to me and taps me on the shoulder and says “hey, I don’t wanna cause a scene or anything but you might want to look at your mom”. I look over at my mother and she has taken off the jacket to her dress and now she’s peeling off the shoulder straps one by one and waving her head around to the music saying “oh my goodness it’s getting so hot in here!” This b*tch was trying to take her clothes off on the dance floor. Oh, I forgot to mention earlier that she had a three drink maximum, but she was getting around this by asking other people to get drinks for her.Cut to the next morning and I got to hear alllllll the embarrassing stories from the night before. She asked why my friend married “an Arab,” called another guest “not Jewish enough to attend the wedding” and complained to anyone who would listen that I didn’t even allow her 50 guests, and the party would have been so much more fun if she had done it. And the pièce de ré·sis·tance? As we were leaving for our honeymoon I got a call from her saying “I know you need me to watch your kid, but not unless you do something for me. You’ll need to call your brother and make nice with him again.” My brother and I are estranged for reasons I can’t get into now. I said no, he’ll go to his real family, the one that cares for him without strings attached.
There you have it! If you're considering inviting a toxic parent to your wedding- DON'T. For anyone interested, we don’t talk anymore and I couldn’t be happier. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

2023.06.05 01:32 EstablishmentLow5820 Conquest 2023: A premium pass holder’s experience

If you’re on twitter or is into gaming, you probably heard of Conquest2023. Since this a hot topic for day pass holders, allow me to share my experience as a premium pass holder.
Warning: long post ahead. Ibigay niyo na sakin to, 20 f*cking K ang ibinayad ko. Ignore niyo na kung may typo or wrong grammar. pagod & disappointed after conquest. Uunahin ko pa ba magproofread?
This is my personal experience. I do not represent all premium pass holders.
I bought premium pass with one goal in mind: I WANT TO MEET OTV&F ESPECIALLY THE ROOMIES! I don’t care about the music night nor the booths. I just want to meet them.
D1: I was not able to attend due to personal reasons so I did not meet Queen Poki, Michael and Aria. I thought it was okay to skip D1 cos I still get to see them on D3 (Smx main stage: Offline Feud)
D2: I enjoyed the booths. They sell cool stuff. My only comment is that it’s so crowded. I tried roaming around hoping I can see other OTV&F, but Im not lucky enough.
Mainstage: sykkuno’s valo match: no priority given to premium pass holders. If you want to get a spot near the stage, you have to be early. People camped near the stage hrs before the program, So I ended up watching the match at the far back. sykkuno’s valorant match is insanely long (21-19) but I still enjoyed it.
(Ok, this is kinda my fault. I assumed the m&g will be similar to Twitchcon m&g) BOY WAS I WRONG. It’s more similar to a KPOP M&G. NO F*CKING SIGNATURES ALLOWED. Lilypichu & Igumdrop M&G: Fans got 10-20sec to meet each of them. Staffs alternately get 4 premium pass holders and 2 day pass holders. The 2 girls are really pretty and nice. I got a decent pic with Jaime but my pic with Lily is a disaster. It’s blurred AF + it’s off centered: imagine a full body picture except Lily’s whole shoes were cut off & there’s only 2 of us but you can easily insert a third person beside me. Ps: I also heard some premium pass holders were asked to wait on the first floor for a few mins cos the area for premium pass is full.
Tried music night for the sake of it. Artists are great but you can tell that most of the crowd are just waiting for The rose. I ended up enjoying it cos I got to listen to new artists (I dont know any of the artists, not even the rose). Good thing they have a bar. The cocktails are also okay for its price. Tried all 3 cocktails. Yung light ang nagdala. Char. I liked URF the most.
D3: this is the most impt day for me. Initial sched published: 11-12:30 rae, syk, leslie m&g (conrad) 2-3 roomies panel (conrad) 4:30-5:30 offline feud (smx mainstage)
I already planned my sched for D3 but lo & behold, @12:55AM, Conquest announced that they are moving the roomies panel to a new venue: MOA Atrium stage. A PUBLIC PLACE. They literally moved a supposedly private event to a public place + they moved the sched to 3:30-4:30. right before OTV Feud. If you want to watch both, you have to run from MOA atrium to smx mainstage.
M&G: the staff announced that instead of having individual pictures, we’ll have a group photo (3 fans + the roomies). This is to accommodate more fans. You can clearly see the disappointment from premium pass holders. Imagine paying 20k, only to get a group photo with the roomies + 2 strangers. And since you have 2 strangers also wanting to talk to them, i ended up just hugging them cos the staff is in a hurry. What an experience. 🙃
Now I have a picture of me, rae, leslie, sykkuno and 2 strangers. THIS IS THE ONLY MEMORY THAT I HAVE OF RAE. Lol. I got to have a little chat with Rae’s mom and sister + a solo pic with the 2 of them while queuing and I must say, I enjoyed that more.
Roomies panel: ended up not seeing this. They said people started camping at the atrium as early as 10am. @1pm, there’s so many people waiting already so I decided to prioritize otv feud instead since I am yet to see poki, aria & michael.
Offline feud: Went there @2 hoping I can still secure a spot near the stage) when I got there, people were already camping in front and no vacant seats left. At this point, I’m just mentally tired of all the disappointments that I just accepted the fact that this is not my lucky day. So I just sat on floor at the side while waiting for them to arrive. I still watched their segment and I must say, Poki eating Jollibee while playing is a really good advertisement.
Highlight of my D3: Funniest thing is that I got more decent pictures with Yvonne & Blau and I only got Blau, Leslie and Yvonne’s signature, which I got OUTSIDE CONQUEST (around 9-10AM @starbucks). YES. OUTSIDE CONQUEST. Fans started camping starbucks cos there’s higher chance of us meeting them there than inside SMX. LOL. I feel bad for the streamers tho. i think they got culture shocked. 🙃
And now I realized. I bought the premium pass because of the roomies but I ended up having the worst memory with them. I have a better memory of all the other things except the one that I was looking forward to. Idk what I did wrong. Maybe I’m just unlucky.
Note: all of them are so nice and pretty and I have mad respect to all of them for enduring PH’s heat and their patience especially when they’re getting swarmed by fans when all they ever wanted is to buy a cup of coffee, but damn, this event is so messed up in so many level. I hope they did not get traumatized and would still want to come back here in the future.
So yeah, is my experience worth 20k? You be the judge.

2023.06.05 00:51 coffeechap An insider's view on Paris and its surroundings

Salut les Parigos / les Voyageurs,
Reddit being Reddit, it's not so easy to keep trace of old contents. Below I tried to aggregate some of the main posts and comments I made about Paris and/or its outskirts, and a bunch of lesser viewed content of mine which - I hope - can still be useful to get a grasp on the diversity of Paris, particularly out of the touristic path.
Enjoy (if like me you are overwhelmed by grass allergies right now and have to stay at home!)
NB: unless mentioned otherwise, posts are in English. You'll also notice that it mainly focuses on a large North-East quarter of the city where I've been hanging out for ages.
A collection of ideas for discovering Paris off the beaten path
Alternative cultural places in the close suburbs of Paris
What to do with pre-teen children in Paris
A focus on community cafés, tea-rooms and mixed concepts (in French)
An enumeration of dive bars in centenorth/east of Paris
Popular bars for the 35+ crowds in the North-East arrondissements (in French)
Popular and laid-back nightlife in the 20th arrondissement
Sample of places to enjoy in the 11th arrondissement (in French)

2023.06.04 23:48 EstablishmentLow5820 Conquest 2023: A premium pass holder’s experience

2023.06.04 22:51 SolitaryMarmot Looking for track lists or guides to understanding the theory and composition of deep house/techno/EDM

I am curious about both the theory of house music and how its constructed, its orchestration and arrangement. Does anyone have a deep house/techno or other EDM playlist that can help me understand it? This isn't a full theory question, but theory is definitely part of it. I don't know where else to ask about the musical building blocks of a genre including the theory. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I can pick up my instruments and play music but I know very little about making music.
I live a few blocks away from an awesome 14,000 seat venue. so I've been going to all the shows anyway. Last season they started hosting some EDM artists and these are the first EDM shows I have ever been to.
Last night Lane 8 played with a pretty big undercard. I was curious if anyone could tell me what I am hearing and watching when I see an EDM artist "play" music. Like in the context of how I play and record music at home for fun (which I have no idea is right or wrong. I just do it because I futzed with Reaper and Ableton long enough to just learn how to play and record stuff.)
When I make an "EDM" track I do it the only way I know how which is to record short pieces, say 2 to 4...sometimes 8 measures on a short scale 4 string bass guitar. Then on a semi hollow guitar...usually chord progressions and variations of the progression with a certain tone. Then I'll play some fills and short melody sections on my other guitar with a different tone. I usually play some versions of the harmonies a three octave midi controller thing I have too. Just moving between the chords each measure and taking a synth tone from Ableton and adding it. And then usually I use just a drum rack in Ableton since it's not easy to mic an acoustic kit well. Then I just lay different pieces of melody over different pieces of harmony and rhythm in the envelopes...record the arrangement with effects and a mastering mix and then send them to my friends for hahas (they often include quantized recordings of my cats funny meowing...because well, that's funny and who doesnt love cat sounds in EDM?) Like essentially this is just a chopped up version of how I record any other type of music. Like I would play the intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro on all the different instruments and mix them together.
When I watch an EDM artist "play" Ableton live...it's hard to tell what they are doing. Like they kinda bounce around and spin a knob here and another one there. And put on their studio monitors somewhat dramatically...and then for a build/drop they wave their hands around. But are they actually adding and taking individual melody and harmony pieces and laying them in live? Like arranging the envelopes from their pre recorded tracks, the same way I would arrange an EDM song with 2 to measure sections? Like I've seen Justin Vernon/Bon Iver play and he will add synth loops by actually playing the melody sections live on stage and the harmonies they are played over range from simple to somewhat complex. But at no point last night did anyone play any instrument.
From what I heard of the house genre...the harmonies underneath were consonant and bright usually...but the minor tones were often emphasized. Like in the minor section of a progression the 2nds, m3rds, 6ths were front and center often to the leading tone then back to the tonic. Like that's where the feel/flow came from. But the harmonic progressions themselves didnt use a ton of borrowed or modal chords. And melody lines often moved in very short chromatic intervals repeated. But laying melodies over simple chords looped over and over isn't exactly a chore. So are they editing these lines on the fly and changing them up for later in the song? Is that what is happening in the monitors? There aren't a ton of changes. And I realize its not as melodically complex as playing over extended and augmented jazz chords. These loops run for no joke like 15 - 20 minutes at a time without variation. But are the variations to the melody in fact improvised in a live performance?
There is some rhythmic variation on breaks and drops and builds, but it feels like those elements all use the same variations if that makes sense. And because the 4 on the floor electronic staccato kick seems to wash out the low end...I ended up with the feeling that I just listened to essentially the same song from 4 PM to 10 PM through 5 artists doing the same knob spinning and pad pressing. But I don't know what else to listen for that makes the music more discernable and unique (the quantized drums are very overpowering to the ear.)
If anyone can talk me through what EDM is or point me to a good video on what I am listening to...I would be super grateful. This was maybe the 4th EDM show I have been to and I have no idea what I am listening to.

2023.06.04 22:46 TusharDaniel Primavera Sound Europe

I'm going to the Porto show next weekend and I wanted to find out how the Barcelona set went though, and Madrid later this week as well though anyway. If anyone's been to either, just in terms of what merch to buy, what's the setlist like, how's the crowd participation and everything?
I know she hasn't done a Europe tour in a long fucking while so Halsey nation is out in force for this one and I'm so excited to see anyone who's going there as well and sing along and vibe to the music. :')
It's one of my life goals to see Halsey and I'm going to break the fuck down when I see her perform.
Also, apparently there was a big group of fans playing UNO in front of the stage before Halsey performed, and being awfully loud, how true was that? I've been hearing that from a lot of folks who went there. I get camping out for Halsey is a thing, which I'm going to do, but isn't it a little weird to not give the artist performing before her at the same venue a chance too? And how early should I camp out too?
