Hawaii - two week honeymoon trip review Dec 2022

2023.06.05 04:42 BlackTemplars Hawaii - two week honeymoon trip review Dec 2022

Have some time to finally write a trip review for Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii for my honeymoon in December 2022 for two weeks. Mid December and left for home on Christmas Day. This was our first time redeeming cc points for anything, so lots of trial and error and lessons learned.
My wife and I had gotten married in October and were actually not planning going on honeymoon until Spring 2023 until we researched further and managed to make December 2022 work in our favor. We started planning and booking reservations TWO months before our trip. We are very fortunate to have done it in that time span and managed to make almost everything work out.
IAD - DTW - SEA - OGG on Delta, First Class One way.
Maui
Day 1
Got to Maui late in the night and picked up our rental car, a Chevy Equinox, with Enterprise. Used my Hilton Aspire to get 7x points.
One night at Courtyard Marriott by the airport and paid $500.
It was the best we could do with our timing.
Day 2 - 6
Breakfast and lunch was by the food trucks near Costco. Shopping nearby for supplies for our vacation.
Meals (Costco food trucks):
5 nights at the Grand Wailea - 440,000 HH points
Left to check into our resort the Grand Wailea in Wailea. Both the wife and I are Hilton Diamond members. Mine through the Hilton Aspire and she has status through actual stays. We booked these nights through her account and using all Hilton points. Each reward night was 110,000 points and we got the 5th night free. So 440,000 points total.
This resort was huge and immaculate. Words can describe how nice this place is and the customer service is SUPERB. Literally, the best we have ever experienced. You only have to see and experience it for yourself. My wife and I still talk weekly about the Grand Wailea.
We booked the Terrace View - 1 King Bed as the Standard Night Reward and upon arrival we were upgraded to the Deluxe Ocean View - 1 King Bed in the Molokini wing. Breathtaking views! Avg cash price so this room type is around ~$988 before taxes, fees so it comes to 0.89 CPP (if not including taxes, fees in the total). All meals, incidentals, shopping, and experiences were put onto my Hilton Aspire. Daily food and beverage credit was $25 each for the two of us and used usually at their divine but pricey breakfast buffet. No resort fees charged for booking with points which saved us hundreds of dollars. We immensely enjoyed ourselves at this resort and the lush, manicured surrounding area.
Meals:
Experiences: renting a cabana at the Grand Wailea pool, spa day at the Four Seasons with outdoor hale beachside, Wailea Beach, hiking Twin Falls, Baby Beach, Haleakala National Park
Day 7 - 8
Two nights at the Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux using Amex FHR.
Paid total ~$3400 for the One bedroom, Luxury Suite, Ocean View. Unfortunately, no upgrade upon checking in. Hotel was sold out. Daily breakfast in the form of $30 credit per person and $100 food/bev credit given through the FHR. This stay triggered the $200 FHR credit for my wife's Amex Plat
Quiet, small resort, adults only. We enjoyed our stay here and loved our room. Bed was harder than what we were use to and it was far from the beach. Otherwise we loved the restaurant and the ability to "get away". One of the top hotels in Maui and all of Hawaii. Price tag to boot.
Meals:
Experiences: cabana and pool day at Hotel Wailea, spa day at Montage Kapalua Bay. Outdoor hale with hot tub.
Big Island of Hawaii
Day 9 OGG - KOA (Big Island) round trip booked with Hawaiian Airlines. $106 for each of us before baggage fees. Booked direct using wife's Amex Plat.
Arrived to the Big Island and rented a Toyota Prius though Budget. Paid using Hilton Aspire.
Day 9 - 15
We booked the Hilton Waikoloa Village using all Hilton points, 6 nights in total with one night free. 350,000 pts in total used, 70,000 each night. Initially the standard room redemption was for the Palace Tower Resort View - 1 King Bed and was going for ~$540 a night before taxes/fees so CPP was 0.77. We realized even before our trip that the Palace Tower and old, needed a refresh, and was terribly far from the beach and the parking lot. We asked for an upgrade when we checked in and was given the option to move to the Makai Tower - Ocean View 1 King Bed for an additional $75 per night. We promptly took this offer. This room runs ~$694 per night before taxes/fees and if I subtract the $75 per night, I calculate this to be 0.88 CPP. The Makai tower was much better, our room overlooked the ocean and part of the resort. Frankly, Palace looked like dogshit. Daily F&B credit was $18 for each person. Incidentals again went onto my Hilton Aspire.
Towards the end of our stay, we stayed at the DoubleTree Hilo using 50,000 pts. Room rate was $308 before taxes/fess. CPP was 0.61. This was on the other side of the island and very far from Hilton Waikoloa so we decided to stay overnight there after hiking Volcanoes NP instead of driving to the west side in the middle of the night.
Meals:
Experiences: Kauna'oa Beach, Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing (this is a must!!), Captain Cook monument snorkeling, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National historical park, Punalu-u Black Sand Beach, Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls.
Trip home: OGG - LAX - IAD. United, First Class One way.
Overall, an EXCELLENT trip. We were amazed and thrilled to do so much in two weeks and in such short notice. Again, only two months to plan once our dates were finalized. Between my wife and I, we have the Amex Plat and Gold, Hilton Honors and Aspire, and CFU, CSP. Each card strategically used during our trip. The FHR credit triggered for my wife, and my Aspire triggered the $250 resort credit. If I had to guess, we saved ~$15,000 or more by redeeming CC points. Hope this data point helps some of you trip planning, happy to answer any questions.

2023.06.05 03:34 Spycicle Problems with active safety module

Problems with active safety module
Just trying to see if anyone else is having or has had a similar issue with their Bolt.
I have a 2023 bolt EUV that I got in February. Early April I started getting these system messages. Took it in to the dealer as well as called Chevy directly.
The messages are: "Service driver assist system" and "Service adaptive cruise control"
Both are telling me I need a new "active safety module 1", but that there are no available and they have no timeline on when they will become available.
Quite annoying as it is preventing me from using super cruise, but also basic things like regular cruise control.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

2023.06.05 02:22 vantuckymyfoot Dad's goodbye

My father died at the age of 72. I had just turned 30 - my parents were in their mid-forties when I was born, no small feat for the late sixties.
Dad was healthy and active, and had the blood pressure and cholesterol of a 25-year-old. He was a WWII vet who enlisted in the Navy illegally at sixteen, retiring from the service at 39 as a Chief Boatswain's Mate. He only went to the 8th grade (though my mom helped him get his GED back in the fifties), but he was the wisest, smartest man I knew.
He was killed in a freak car accident. He was leaving his home one summer morning in 1999, and he had to turn left onto the highway. Looking to the east towards the sunrise, the highway has several bumps and dips, which is probably why he didn't see the massive Ford F-350 bearing down on his '92 Chevy S-10.
The best we can figure, Dad spotted the Ford and gunned his engine to get across the highway, and the driver of the Ford tried to go in front of him, crossing the highway into the opposing lane. He ended up t-boning my dad's rig at at least 50 MPH directly in the driver's side door. His little truck was knocked close to 100 yards into a field.
The tough old SOB had his aorta literally severed among other catastrophic injuries, but still managed to live another six hours before finally giving up the ghost after the surgery.
My first words when my brother told me how he'd died were "that's impossible. Superman can't die in a car wreck." But he did.
See, Dad and I would typically talk about once a week. After the death of my mother, he remarried and moved across the country to where he'd grown up, and I later moved to another state myself. It would typically be Sunday mornings, and we'd chat for twenty minutes or a half hour about whatever was going on in the world - movies we'd seen, how his beloved Dodgers were doing, that sort of thing.
However, the week before he died, he called me three different times, all at distinctly odd hours. I was on the west coast and he was in the eastern time zone, meaning there was a three -hour time difference, yet these calls from him came after 8PM my time - well past the bedtime of a septuagenarian, active and healthy or not.
In each call, he only spoke for a couple minutes, dispensing with the regular pleasantries to deliver the same message:
Son, I just want to you know I love you, I miss you and I'm proud of you.
That was it. The same message, three times. I love you, I miss you, and I'm proud of you.
He was not one of those men who was reticent about sharing his feelings, and he'd often told me and my brothers the same thing, but the timing and nature was so out of character. These talks, unlike our typical ones, lasted just a couple of minutes. And of course there was the late hour of the calls.
Monday afternoon after these conversations, I was on the way home from work. I got a call on my primitive 1999-vintage cell phone from my girlfriend (later to be my wife), telling me as gently that she could that my father had passed.
I cried the whole way home, and was shocked into my statement about Superman by my brother's call.
Yet, as I look back, I can only smile. I don't know if Dad knew something, or felt something, or just randomly decided to call his youngest kid a bunch of times to share a message of fatherly love.
But it stays with me as one of his greatest gifts, and one that I try to pass on to my own daughters as much as I can now that they've grown up and moved out themselves:
I love you, I miss you and I'm proud of you.

2023.06.04 18:06 zachalack Chevy cruze in limp mode

2013 chevy cruze ltz with 1.4 turbo (ik, it was a dumb buy) currently in limp mode. Tmobile sync up reading codes p0030, p0301, p0135, P0134, and p0132. Tried putting in a new bosch upstream oxygen sensor and it ran great for an hour and a half before it was fucked again. Car shakes, check engine light comes on, service stabilitrak and service traction control comes across the dash screen. I also just replaced the coil pack and turbo. I’m out of ideas and any help is appreciated.

2023.06.04 14:32 Fabulous-Ad6844 I’m currently a 2018 Chevy Volt owner, I love the car but thinking of giving it to my teen.

I’m considering getting the Bolt EUV for me. My biggest concern though is road trips. We go away in a 600 mile trip a couple of times a year. Sometimes last minute. How have you found the charge time with the Bolt for long trips? Or the availability of chargers in rural areas?
The Equinox EV looks like it will have faster charging so I’m interested in that car too, but it’s maybe too big for my needs.
Btw I’ve had fantastic service with Chevy for my Volt for 5 years which makes me want to stay with them. So much better than any other brand I’ve owned.

2023.06.04 07:59 Personal_Kangaroo_24 2008 Chevy Equinox Service Stabilitrak & Traction Control & ABS Anti-Lock Light Indicator question

2008 Chevy Equinox Service Stabilitrak & Traction Control & ABS Anti-Lock Light Indicator question
Recently bought a 2008 Chevy Equinox for dirt cheap from a family member due to all the issues it has.
As the car started, the following indication lights stayed on and these messages would cycle on the dash:
• ABS LIGHT • ([Brake]) LIGHT • Check Tire Pressure LIGHT (car was neglected for 1+ year(s))
• "Service Stabilitrak" • "Traction Control Off" • "All Wheel Drive Off"
While driving the vehicle, these messages kept cycling through at varying speeds.
Given all these messages I performed an OBD scan, and received the following report (No codes were reset)***:
(Report Dated: May 28)
From a bit of research I concluded that the a combination of the following actions could be performed to resolve these issues:
• Replace the Steering wheel position/angle sensor. • Followed up by an alignment since the steering wheel is at an angle when driving it straight • Replace the wheel hub and bearing bearing in case the magnetic ring is cracked or broken. • The car makes a growling noise that worsens with an increase in speed. Given the amount of miles the car has, it probably needs a new set of wheel bearings. • Replace the Wheel speed sensor(s) • It's only $12/piece • Fill up the Brake Fluid
When we usually have a car problem, I brute force it and replace all the components, but an attempy has been made to narrow the problem down before pulling the trigger and spending money on all these parts.
In an attempt to narrow down the problems, I maxed out the brake fluid and checked the speed sensor in question. After disconnecting the speed sensor, a visible inspection of the harness and connector was performed to rule out oxidation or other visible damage.
After reconnecting the speed sensor, all of the indication lights ceased to appear. Confused and skeptic to believe that all of these issues were resolved, I performed another OBD Scan and received the following report:
(Report Dated: May 29)
This was strange as all the indication lights and messages were no longer showing up. Also, bear in mind***, that I did not reset the codes.
Shooting-the-shit with a friend, they proposed that I drove the car for a while to see if the codes would disappear (very optimistic approach, I know), or the Indicator lights would reappear.
After filling up the tank and driving the vehicle throught varying conditions (25 mph, 35 mph, and 65mph zones) across 40 miles. The "service stabilitrak" light came back on. With the light coming back on, I did another OBD Scan, yet again, here is that latest report:
(Report Dated: June 3)
Now, I am stumped, what I know for certain is that it needs new wheel bearings because of that growling noise it makes at high speeds, it seems that the steering wheel position sensor needs to be replaced, but now I get a recommendation to replace the EBCM and the wheel speed sensor stop showing up.
Any advice on how to move forward?
Has anybody experienced or seen this before in a 2005-2009 Chevy Equinox (1st Gen)? If so, what took care of these problems?
tl;dr: Bought a 2008 Chevy Equinox for dirt cheap, dash looked like a Christmas tree display, performed OBD to narrow down issue. Christmas display turned off after disconnecting and reconnecting a sensor (no codes were reset). Performed another OBD, different code(s) showed up. Drove car, one light came back. Performed a third OBD scan, 1 code disappeared with a recommended solution from auto repair store. Don't know what to believe. Please, help.

2023.06.04 02:01 thefreakychild 2021 Chevy Spark service/repair manual. Unavailable, but potential option?

Basically, I own a 21 Chevy Spark. I love the car, it does exactly what I need it to without all the bells and whistles.
I also do a lot of my own work on my vehicles, as much as I can. Why send to a shop and spend more money when I can competently perform the majority of all routine maintenance and minomedium level repair work? Ya know.
Then again, Ive always found it advantageous to have a repaiservice manual for my vehicles so I'll be able to quickly reference procedures, torque specs, etc for my repairs.
That being said, it's damned impossible to get a repaiservice manual for this car....
Chevy uses Helm Inc. to produce all their documentation, and I called Helm and was told that Chevy made the decision to not sell repaiservice manuals beyond 2018..... They do, however, have a manual for a 17 Spark.
As far as I know, there's no difference, except body styling and some interior, between a 17 and a 21 Spark. Engine, transmission, drivetrain, and all other parts are the same as far as I know. The fourth gen Sparks (M400 chassis) began in 2015 and carried through the final year of the Spark's production in 22.
Before I go spending that money for a copy of the 2017 Spark repaiservice manual I just wanted to know if anyone had any input on this. Basically, just a sanity check, ya know?
Thanks in advance!

2023.06.04 01:00 Spddemon426 Calling all Subaru Parts Managers

So I have an opportunity to run a Subaru store, was given a very generous offer. What are some of the challenges running this car line?
Aside from the oil, I’m used to how they bill oil for warranty cause VW does it the same way and I did VW for 10 years, Nissan is similar as well.
They want to up their wholesale, is it something that is possible or does the manufacturer make it harder?
I know they group their parts the same way as Nissan with a 4-5 digit prefix, I couldn’t find anything online with all the groups listed.
Any cheat sheets or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Just a back ground, been doing parts for 25 years, parts directoservice for 10 and currently doing fixed operations consulting for a few Chevy dealers.

2023.06.02 23:27 Arch-40 A Superhero Reborn

This was a personal essay for a writing course. It ended up being a very personal writing. I'm much better at fiction and my other personal essays did not stand up to this one at all. So this one is very special to me. I hope you enjoy the read.
Ever since I could remember I wanted to be a superhero. I read and traded comic books and superhero cards with my neighborhood friends regularly. In 1989 my parents got me a Nintendo Entertainment System (or and NES for short) in which I actually could be superhero characters and save the day. These early years ultimately forged who I would grow up to become, for better or for worse. I would go on to develop one driving force in my life. One mission above all: to be a hero, to help people at any cost.
You could say I was a typical young boy. I loved my parents and wanted to be just like my father. When he had to work on his old Chevy I was there. When he watched basketball games on Sunday afternoon I was there. When he played basketball in city leagues, I was there. In fact, in the city league games, I got to flip the score cards and sound the buzzer for the end of each quarter. So as I got into high school, still wanting to be like my father, I considered joining the military. I didn’t go to enlist for a long time, but after high school while working at my job at a kiosk in a mall, I ran into an old friend who was now in the US Army. He had asked if I would be interested in enlisting. I was in my mid twenties and working at a mall kiosk barely making any money with no real career prospects. I told him I would go down to the center.
This was my chance to be a hero. This was how I could do something to better myself and the world around me. When I committed to the decision to enlist, I proudly told my parents. My father, who served in the army when I was a child, was proud and excited for my decision. My mother on the other hand, was more apprehensive and worried about her only son enlisting. A couple of years passed by and I swapped my elected branch to the US Navy. The enlistment process was intense and I needed a lot of documents. I regrettably left my military career behind when I got a job offer at GE Aviation. This was a big deal. The facility manufactures helicopter and airplane engines and components for commercial companies and the US military. It was a major salary boost and a job I could be proud of.
Even after landing this career job, I stilled pined for military life. What kept me motivated was knowing that if I couldn’t serve next to the brave and dedicated men and women of the armed services I could have their backs in a way. The main engines produced at this facility are for the US Blackhawk helicopters. The engines are designed to withstand sand, dust and other materials that might otherwise damage and bring down other engines. When I tell people that I wish I enlisted to this day and that if I could still I would, they try to dissuade me.
“The pay isn’t that great.” “It’s dangerous.” “You’ll probably get sent overseas.”
None of these were valid points for me. You do not perform a job of nobility for the money or accolades. Yes the job may be dangerous at times, but to defend what you love, sometimes you must take risks. If called to travel for the job, I will go for my job. I would be signing up for this role knowing what it entailed. There would be little shock and awe when it comes to the basic job duties. I truly believed that having to abort my previous mission to start this new mission with this new job that I would still be satiated. I believed it would be what I needed. To fulfill my duties and honorably contribute. I was only partially correct.
While I am very proud of the work we do and my part in the system, the “hero” in me never left. Still having a strong affinity for military culture, I strive to take care of and protect people, usually at a personal cost. Leave no man behind. Sacrifice yourself to save the person next to you. Earn the highest honor. While lending someone money or waking up at two am to help with an emergency or dropping what you’re doing to help someone who ran out of gas is not a death on the battlefield, it can still be a death of self. Superheroes are super for a reason. Maybe they are impervious to heat or cold. Maybe they can fly. They can probably bench press cement trucks. Maybe they just have billions of dollars to buy all the heroic toys they want. I don’t fit into any of those molds. I am just a human, just a man of average means going through life like everybody else. I can’t possibly save the world myself.
In trying so, I have developed depression and anxiety, both extremely debilitating. I somehow put on my cape and cowl and gauntlets and never took them off. I made my mission to serve and protect at any cost. In doing so I forgot who I was. I will disregard my comfort in order to make somebody else more comfortable. I will sacrifice my sleep if it means somebody else can rest more easily. I believed wholeheartedly in my impregnable armor and that it would keep me safe from trauma and I could freely rescue people. I learned that my armor is not impregnable. I learned I could be attacked and damaged. However, I am also learning that it is possible to take off my armor and not be the hero. I will by no means abandon people, but I am on a path to learning how to wear just a utility belt rather than a full suit. Without my suit of armor I can be a normal person. Everything I did to save others I can use on myself. I can have bad days like everybody else and I am learning that it’s okay to tell somebody else having a rough go:
“Hey, I’m not doing so well today. I don’t think I can be much help right not.”
Even though I am in the process of removing my superhero attire, I will hold on to my utility belt. It still contains useful tools to assist others, but allows me to be me. I can learn who I am without my gauntlets and work to fortify my mental and emotional armor. I can be my personal superhero.

2023.06.02 21:45 SteveBule 40amp vs 32amp charging. Are the gains worth it?

I searched and found some posts that seem to indicate it may be worth it to charge at 32 instead of 40 amps. I’m in a pickle, and before I go and cause a big kerfuffle I wanted to get the opinion of folks in hear.
Context: I had some work done recently on my house that required some circuits to be pulled unrelated to EV charging. I’m planning to buy an EV this summer and asked them to include that in the work scope, since panel access is tricky and they would already have to get in there. They have a good quote and the contract says they would install a 240v 50amp circuit for an EV charger, with a 16-50 receptacle. I bought a Chargepoint charger that was heavily discounted through the utility.
I was not there during install. They installed 8gauge wire and a 40amp double breaker. They said it can handle the 40amp mode of the Chargepoint, against recommendation.
I know I can just tell them to re do it, but it’s a lot of work and I’m wondering if would be better to just ask for a discount on the work, if I really need the 50amp circuit (40 amp charging) or if 40amp circuit (32 charging is fine). I’m planning to get a mid size ev like an Volkswagen ID4 or Chevy volt EUV.
Additional context: during the installation of the other work they found some serious electrical issues. The issues were caused by errors from our electrical utility, but the install team stayed late into the evening to ensure the utility corrected their issues and make sure everything at our house was safe. Above and beyond customer service, up until today where I would say I have mixed feelings. Today was when I asked the head electrician about the charger. He was very nice but is basically recommending not following installation guidelines by running the charger in 40amp mode on a the 40amp circuit.
Also, the run for the EV charger is about 60ft long in a crawl space, as our panel is not in the garage, so it’s not a super easy swap.
Well that’s more than enough info to get some opinions. I work in a similar field and hugely valued their support when we were experiencing issues from the utility. These folks also were recommended by others. While I may contractually have a right to a 50amp circuit, I’m wondering if it’s easier to just ask for a discount, if getting that 50amp circuit installed is really worth it or not. The ev is not our only family car, so it’s not as necessary to have a fast charger. but if the faster the better, I’d rather have the better.
The company also has a “no change orders” type of policy that basically says “we’re not going to tell you it costs more because we ran into an unexpected problem. Our quote price is solid and we won’t come back asking for more if we run into issues” and they have the best warranty in the area. I assume their customer service oriented strategy is why they stayed late to help without charging extra, despite the issue not being caused by them.

2023.06.02 17:18 Analysis_Separate What maintenance should I do for new used Camaro

Getting a V6 2016 Camaro LT RS this week with 92K miles,
What service should I have done or do myself when I first get it? Should I just take it into a Chevy dealership for maintenance and let them decided if it needs anything else,
Car has no problems I’m aware of besides the side detection sensors “need service” (they don’t work) but I can have that checked on anytime I’m more concerned about making sure the engine and transmission are healthy and stay that way while I have the car since this is the first nice and expensive car I’m buying and I’m overly worried about it breaking down even though it appears to be in good condition
Any issues I should look out for in future with car or ways to avoid them?
Also saw people say the v6 out of all the engines is the most reliable, Is it semi easy to work on for small or medium repairs?

2023.06.02 17:09 ProgramRealistic3981 2007 chevy silverado p0700 and p2534 only two codes limp mode

Ok so I'm in need of some help before I do something stupid like actually blow up a truck. Not really. We have 2007 chevy silverpeaceofshito, here is the back story, we bought this truck ran fine after about a few months 1 gear went out, now here's where all the part buying comes in, so I went to change the 1/2 solenoid so while in there changed all of them, put it back together went through all the gears drove to my dad's ran beautiful, well we went to leave when I put it in reverse I heard a pop did quit know where it came from but sounded like front right, that's when service 4wd light came on so, then it was driving slow wouldn't shift gears stuck in 3rd, took it to earl bros in fremont, they said the fuel pump driver module was not sending anything to the transmission so here is a list of parts I have changed, also here are the only codes that are popping up p0700/ p2534 1. All modules in tranny (4 total) 2. 4wd actuator 3. 4wd motor and selector switch sensor 4. Selector switch in dash 5. Fuel pump driver module. 6. Transmission control module 7. Ign switch in column. Because of code p2534
And yep you guessed still in limp mod and and 4wd service light on. Any suggestions and or help would be greatly appreciated.

2023.06.02 16:19 ch1ck3n_t03s A Guest Services story (Also my first time working drive up)

When I was working drive up a couple days ago, I had a customer ping us at 9:45. I was on closing duty and was the only one at guest services. I went to find his order, which was a mini-fridge, and brought it out to what I presumed was a Chevy truck(it was in fact not a truck, but rather a small car). The guy smelled of weed, his girlfriend and himself were sharing a whole pizza(respect), and we’re almost surprised by how big the box was. We tried getting it in the back of his car, the trunk and any other spot we could before he just said “put it on the roof, I got it from there.” I watched his guy from the inside security camera drive off with this fridge untethered to his car with his hazards on. Definitely and odd first closing shift on guest services.
