2023.05.29 21:25 zzzorrah Have you biked TO the LBJ Wildflower Center or the Veloway? What are my safest options? What was your experience?

We are hoping to bike to the LBJ Wildflower Center and/or the Veloway soon but looking at maps and trails our own route in undeterminable. Will take in our mountain bikes, so trails aren't much of an obstacle. We would begin in South Austin from South Lamar area, perhaps to Violet Crown Trail area and down to the parks - but how?

Edit: Here is a VC Trail Map as of '22 - looks like the southernmost trail head is still to be developed - so I wonder if this is a viable throughway at all?

2023.05.29 21:22 thr3e_kideuce How I would fix transit in the Bay Area (in chronological order)

  1. Merge BART, Caltrain, and SMART into a single regional rail system. This would involve Caltrain transitioning from a commuter rail system into a regional rail system with the Dumbarton Rail Corridor. The new service would be called BART (Bay Area Regional Transit). Caltrain and SMART lines would get numbers and BART lines would have numbers to differentiate the track gauge. This means VTA would give up its ownership of its BART stations.
  2. Force Santa Clara, Alameda, SF, Marin, Sonoma, Solano, Napa, Contra Costa, and San Mateo counties to start contributing a certain amount of funding to the combined system. Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. did this with the Washington Metro which is now starting to recover. BART can no longer operate itself, maintain itself, or pay for projects based on fares alone and needs a confirmed source of funding. And yes, Atherton and Berkeley have to shut up.
  3. Implement BRT and Trans on several corridors (Mission Blvd, Hesperian Blvd, San Pablo Ave, El Camino Real, etc.) as a starting ground.
  4. Start implementing light metro systems to complement the combined regional rail system. They would mostly act as spur lines (i.e. Niles Canyon to Newark connecting to the Dumbarton Bridge) or bypass lines (i.e. a new line along Hesperian Blvd and Dolittle Dr). Ideal first lines include Los Gatos to Milpitas via SJC Airport, Evergreen to Newark, Saratoga to Evergreen, Castro Valley to San Mateo, Milpitas to Stanford and Woodside via North Sunnyvale, East San Jose to Cupertino, and East Hayward to Alameda via Eastmont and Lake Chabot. The light metro lines would have 90 second headways. They would be smaller than BART stations, no interlining, 3 or 5 car trains, no parking spaces and would look identical to the Milan Metro M5 line. The idea of taking away the 'aesthetic' features is to bring the cost down as low as possible without sacrificing safety.
  5. Add a new Passenger rail tunnel in the Sunol Grade for ACE and new BART (the letter lines).
  6. Reintroduce regional rail service on the Iron Horse trail along 680 as a tunnel (similar to RER). Suburbanites can whine all they want but they have to grow up, the world doesn't revolve around them. The line can run from Redwood City and San Jose to Martinez.
  7. Integrate Valley Link into ACE, which itself would become a joint venture between new BART and San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission.
  8. Cancel the widening of I-80 in Vallejo (there are plans to add new toll lanes). Instead, extend the red line to Napa as eBART. Also, delay all express lane projects until viable alternatives can be provided (including bike paths).
  9. Introduce ACE service from Merced to Martinez on a new rail corridor. Amtrak San Joaquins would also run up to Brentwood.
  10. Extend the Yellow Line of eBART to Brentwood or Discovery Bay.
  11. Extend the Orange Line to San Rafael as eBART.
  12. Force Union Pacific and BNSF to nationalise their rail lines (at state level at least) or they lose funding.
  13. Add laser detectors to fare gates that will automatically alert security or police if someone is evading their fare. Minimum fine would be $700.
To accomplish #1-13 would require staging a coup or engaging in local elections more.

2023.05.29 21:14 AmericanClassic7 51 [M4F] #Lakeland, Florida - HONEST AD: Attractive, right wing, dominant man seeks younger, fit, conservative woman for traditional relationship and marriage

Hi
How are you?
You know how you want to be bowled over and think, whoa, I think I've found my exact match who just fits me so well, it's like we're made for each other?
Yeah, let's find out.
We're not talking perfection or anything, just a really great match that makes our lives seem like our own little Heaven on earth. At least we try and make it that way every day.
With that in mind, here's who I am and what I'm looking for.
Here's what I want in you:
Now, a quick note: I like a woman who shares her ideas and opinions and sees if something holds water when I say what I want done. Not in a sarcastic tone or questioning way, but tactfully and politely. If there's something you wrestle with, let me know. Ask if I've considered this or that, or give me a different perspective to consider. Or just as good, offer an alternative. Say I want to obey you and I will, but would be ok if I... (fill in the blank with your alternative idea) to try and get that same result for you?
Something like that. And if you're the quiet type and just want to obey without much input, I can work with that.
Note: Be willing to talk about sex and answer any number of questions. Ask any you have. Sex is essential in a great marriage, and we need to know if we're compatible with our desires and preferences and what we expect or are looking for. If you're less experienced or a virgin, no worries. There are still things to talk about.
This is getting long and you're not reading fast enough.
You should already be thinking of what you're going to say to me and stand out from the other women.
Hints: I love honesty. It's essential to me. I love longer replies (not just the first ones, but any). Not every one has to be some mini-novel but you get what I'm saying. I love details. I mean, I don't need the "I had this sandwich at 12:32 and it didn't sit well with me, and my boss has this habit where he walks the hall and I keep my door partially open so..."
More like you just fill me in who you are, what you believe, what you like or love, what you want in relationships, anything. "I love swimming, I try to go 2-3 times a week and mountain biking is almost my thing. I went on this trail the other day and it was..."
Or "OMG you described me to a T. You mentioned being obedient and loving to serve my man and I'm like, hey, if he only knew! I'm throwing up a hand here and making my way to the front of the line so you notice me because (fill in the blank with things you love to do)
OR the super honest route:
"You know what, there are prettier girls (I'm doing ok in that area, though ;) and I don't have all of what you're looking for but I do have (list the things you have) and most would probably win if you compared us in some of the things you listed, but I can say that no one will outwork me, no other woman will be as committed to you, or do her best to make your life better in whatever way I can, or love you like crazy (we'll get there) or not let myself go and try and look good. Those things I can control. So if you're looking for an "average" girl but who can offer extraordinary in some ways, and treat you like a king, you may want to write me back. We could have the best relationship!"
You get the idea.
I work odd hours sometimes.
So if you write me (and you should), don't disappear if you don't hear from me right away, or even in a few hours. I will find you. I will write and we'll begin our first chapter in what is hopefully, a wonderful romance that fills us with joy, love, happiness and a peace because we've found that right match for us.
Message or chat. Hit that button and tell me about you. Age and location and anything you want to share. Be willing to trade pics very soon.

2023.05.29 19:42 kootenaypow 12hrs in Banff (June 1st)

Looking to make the most of 1 night in Banff. We will be driving in from the West, hoping to arrive around 12 noon, and will leave early the next morning.
We are a fit active couple looking to take in as many sights as we can. As well as have a nice dinner.
Our plan thus far is the try and stop at Lake Louise, maybe do the Fairview lookout trail or the lakeshore. If parking is an issue we can take the tramline trail to access the lake.
Then we will check into our hotel in Banff, walk the Bow river trail to the Surprise Corner Viewpoint. Then back into town for dinner. Perhaps the Bison, but it doesn't look like they have outdoor seating. We'd prefer to sit on a patio if the weather is nice.
Questions: What about the Lake Louise gondola? Seems like parking isn't an issue, but the Whitehorn is closed. If we can't get up to the lakeshore, should be go to the ski hill as an alternative?
What are we missing, what shouldn't we miss? We love hiking, bike, paddle. 10km with 700m elevation would be about the limit of our time available, so if there is a hike shorter than that that's better than the Bow RiveL.L. Lakeshore. I'd love to hear your recommendation.

2023.05.29 19:37 ApocaholicTWD1 A mothman fan story I wrote when bored😭

Through my teenage years I was an avid outdoorsman if I wasn’t out camping I would be hiking, hunting, fishing and everything in between. It was always my dream to one day hike the Appalachian Trail, or at least most of it. And I always had an interest in the town on Point Pleasant. The moment I reached the age of 18 and made enough money, I purchased an old pickup truck listed on an online retailer, I then almost immediately began the drive after gathering my gear and plotting my map, as I arrived I felt a sense of eeriness in the air. The townsfolk were unsettled and there was a harsh breeze in the air, I had been aware of the alleged “cryptids” surrounding the area of West Virginia such as the Grafton Monster and arguably the most recognisable, Mothman. Before reaching the trail I decided it would be best to learn more about dangers on the trail such as venomous creatures, poisonous plants and even crazed people. Along my walk I encountered a man by the name of John, he told me of a creature stalking his farm just south of point pleasant. I was what some may call a “skeptic” I don’t necessarily believe in the supernatural however I do believe certain phenomena may only be explained as “supernatural”.
While exploring the town I noticed the large statue of mothman, for some reason I couldn’t take my eyes off of it and I felt as though I was being watched. After what felt like 5 minutes I shook it off and continued to the trail. I was aware it would take me at least 6 months and I did lots of research to prepare for the trek ahead.
While travelling through the first section I noticed the birds stop singing as I walked past and the occasional shrieking sound. It was strange but I brushed it off as red foxes or a similar predator of the likes. The further I ventured the louder the shrieking and the more nauseas I grew, as I reached one of the shelters I noticed a bearded man with nothing but a pair of ripped trousers walking around the woods, about 100 feet away. Upon noticing him I crouched behind the window of the shelter and turned out my lamp watching him as he talked to himself in a language I couldn’t understand. After a solid 20 minutes he disappeared into the brush. I didn’t sleep that night and the next morning I continued down the trail, this time I noticed countless animal bones scattered along the trail and even some hanging from trees deeper in the woods, naturally this freaked me out but I kept going, a decision I have regretted for the rest of my life on the fourth day my knife became dull so I set up camp early and began sharpening it along with my other tools. While I was tending to the fire I noticed a dark shadow fly over me , I immediately retreated to my tent watching the beast circle my encampment screeching like a dying mouse while doing so. It’s wingspan had to have been at least 11 feet and it looked to be about 8 feet tall. It’s had a black almost cloak like material surrounding it’s body, however it could of been fur or feathers, nevertheless it was enough for me to star sprinting into the forest where I came across a man, he looked extremely familiar but I couldnt put my finger on it, I told him about my encounter and he urged me to end the trail and turn back to town which was somehow less than a mile away, naturally I agreed but was extremely puzzled on how I managed to run 4 days worth of hiking in what seemed to be less than 5 minutes. Upon arriving at the town of point pleasant I informed local authorities of my experience but they brushed it off as me being under the influence of narcotics, however I have never used illicit substances and certainly didn’t while in the middle of no where. The man from town, John booked me a room in the inn and I called a close relative to pick me up in the morning. To this day I have nightmares of that being and recently I’ve been receiving strange phone calls from unknown numbers claiming to know who I am and the “things I’ve done” I don’t discourage anyone from hiking the Appalachian trail however I warn them to approach the challenge with great care.

2023.05.29 19:28 saltsaltsaltsalt6969 How to get to Emerald Bay without a car?

Hi, I might visit South Lake Tahoe this summer and I was very interested in visiting emerald bay. However I don't have a car or drivers license, so is there a way to get there with public transit? Or any other alternative ways to get there without a car? Thank you in advance!

2023.05.29 19:15 PSHoffman Pacifist: 6 - Hrutskuld Don't Have Orphanages

<< First < Prev Next >
***
Caly and Olm followed the dust storm out of the city and down into the scrublands, passing the scattered parade of repulsor bikes and homesteader trucks and old sandcutter boats that were so laden with luggage they didn’t hover, so much as drag along the sand. Eventually, the scrublands gave way to even scrubbier lands, and it was just Caly and Olm alone. The hills no longer grew with an abundance of weeds, only patches of sharp-looking grass, and twists and clumps of gnarled cacti. Pipes of stiff plants cast shadows down the ridges of the hills, looking every bit like people standing along the red cliffs, raising their hands to beg for a ride.
Coordinates ticked away on the corner of her visor, routing their path to the orphanage. The tails of the storm showered the hills with dust, dust, and more dust. But when it came to the cracked flats, its fury dried up, and it spread into a tan haze across all that empty land. You couldn’t ask for better terrain. Caly leaned forward in the stirrups and Olm squeezed tighter around her waist. She throttled on, and the bike reared and screamed as it plunged into the haze, leaving a sandy vortex in their wake.
They thundered across the desert. Her legs went numb, and even then, she kept going.
A shift, on the horizon was the only warning. A gap rose up out of nowhere, a massive canyon deeper than it was wide. She yanked on the brakes, and shoved the repulsor hard against the sand as she tried to halt the bike’s forward movement. Not soon enough. Caly cursed and threw the bike into a turn until they sped along the edge of the cliff.
“Sorry,” she growled. She hadn’t seen the canyon until they were practically staring down into it.
Olm didn’t say anything about their near miss, no criticism, no disapproving intake of breath. She was quietly grateful for that.
Both of them stayed seated in silence for a long moment, taking in the view. Entire cities could’ve fit down there, and no one would know. Plants grew in the cracks and shelves down the cliff faces, and one enterprising old tree had found enough dirt to make a home on a rocky outcropping jutting halfway across the canyon. Far below, the glint of brown water suggested that a creek might be down there, hidden in shadow and dry, tangled brush.
Olm grunted. Caly turned her head to follow his gaze, down the other side of the canyon. At first, she thought she was looking at some huge shadow cutting across the canyon. Her helmet zoomed in on a structure, black and metallic, that jutted from one end of the gap to the other. Spikes large enough to spear a spacecraft jutted up from its twisting form. The structure, which looked more like the intertwined roots of some moon-sized tree, growing through the stone.
“What is that?”
“Only the Dead Ones know,” Olm said.
Like the Spirines of the Independent Cities, the root bridge was made of that black, glittering substance favored by the Dys. Not quite metal. Maybe, once, it dammed the river, but the river had cut beneath it, and kept on its winding trail, so the Root looked more like an exposed, planet-sized rib.
“Let’s head South,” Olm said. “We’ll find another crossing.”
“That thing looks sturdy enough.”
“It’s Dyss.”
“So? We’re just passing over it. Bike won’t even touch the thing.”
Olm rumbled his discomfort.
“You think the human crossed somewhere else?” Caly cocked her head, a challenge.
Olm grunted, as if to say “Fine.”
The Bridge grew at an angle. While the opposing side rose smoothly to the top of the cliff, their side began with a bit of a drop. “Hang on,” she said, as she lined up the bike and revved the repulsors. They flew off the cliff, and she pulled up hard to keep the heavy nose level as they fell toward the Dyssian dam, or whatever it was. They crunched on impact. And then, her stomach dropped as the repulsor almost slid off the smooth, mottled-black structure. Then, it was smooth riding. They hovered a foot or two above the Bridge, but even so, Olm’s hands crushed her shoulders under his anxious grip. Normally, he hated when she pulled the throttle, so she was surprised when he leaned forward and spoke in a tense voice, “Faster.”
She had to resist ramping off the other side. With sand once more under their feet, Olm let go of her, leaned back in the saddle, and gave a loud sigh. She glanced in the mirror, and saw him squeezing his eyes shut, the cracks in his skins glowing a dull red.
“Need a rest?” she asked.
“I thought we were trying to catch up to him.”
“No sense going in unprepared. Be ready, or be ready to die, right?”
“I am always ready for death.” Olm sniffed. Looked back at the Bridge, its gnarled spines standing sentry over the canyon. “But let’s not camp here.”
They rode until the air was so chill, Caly couldn’t feel her fingers. Her visor’s heaters struggled to keep up without fogging up her helmet, so they dismounted and built a small camp in the shadow of a rocky berm. Olm set out his pocket fire, a small spherical device that gave off a warm, blue glow. They used the bike and their own bodies to shield the light from any far off watchers. The sunset lit up a torn tuft of cloud. It looked like the last, falling petal of a fiery rose.
As the sun waned, one of Nowhere’s moons seemed to gain strength. Caly spotted the Hyperlane not far off, a string of double lights spread across the sky like a constellation of twin arrows, side by side.
When the Hyperlane started to glow, Caly stood up.
She watched it, for a long moment. Gathering light, going from a pale fuzz to full blue and into white as all that pent-up energy flushed out. And then, it was just those two strings of light once more.
“More Auran Arais,” Caly said.
“Floaters? How can you tell?”
“Helmet caught their IDs. That’s the second batch of freighters this week. Headed out to the new belts, I’d guess.”
Olm looked up, though his hands stayed hovering over the pocket fire, said, “More and more these days. Wonder why?”
The Hyperlanes were not one way to cross the systems of the Synod—they were the only way. Without them, the Synod was nothing more than a series of isolated planets, separated by millions of light years. Once, Caly had asked her mother, “Why don’t we just build more?”
“We didn’t build them,” her mother said, disgusted that her own child would ask such an inane question. “We only discovered them. It was the Dyss who set all this in motion.”
The Synod’s ability to power the lanes was severely limited. Getting passage to the Synod’s core (where everyone wanted to be) was more expensive than going out. So the only people who came all this way, to New Nowhere—the last junction on the furthest frontier—were prospectors, fortune seekers, families in dire need, dreamers or fools (which were the same thing), the odd adventurer and thrill seeker, and, of course, the exiles. Like Olm. Like me.
Out here, there was only one hyperlane, and the Synod was not keen on wasting the reserves to keep it running. Even the Auran Arais—those patient masters of interstellar industry—only sent the odd mega-freighter to work the belts beyond. If the lane was lighting up again, twice in one week, something big was happening back home.
But what? And why now? The Couran Unity was still gathering their support in the Councils, both Mass and Crown. It would be decades before their plans went into motion.
She stared up at the hyperlane, as if she could demand answers from it. She stood, forgetting how cold and tired she was, until Olm tugged on her sleeve, and offered her a piece of dried biscuit and a clod of cheese so cold it was almost frozen. Caly flipped her visor open, and wolfed it down.
As they settled in for the night, she scanned the horizon one last time, searching for lifeforms. Her visor illuminated only the strange, urchin-like plants that grew in clusters along the shadowed parts of the desert. Feathery fronds stuck out of the spines and waved in the wind, catching airborne microbes, or whatever it was they did for food.
“Thank the stars for the Synod’s Finest,” Olm said, as he pulled out a couple of emergency packs and bedrolls from the top trunk of the enforcer’s bike. Caly took a bedroll, the metallic fabric crinkling as she laid it out. She curled as close to the pocket flame as she could without melting her bedroll, and willed herself to relax. She started to dim her visor to block out the light from the stars, when Olm muttered something from the bedroll next to hers.
“What?” Caly turned over.
“Can’t stop thinking about him,” Olm grumbled.
“The human?”
Olm rolled over and propped himself up on a huge elbow, “One second, he was there. The next—you saw it, didn’t you?”
“I didn’t see anything. There was too much dust.”
“Exactly. How fast did he get up to your tower?”
“Maybe the human’s got a double. Like Split Agasgar?”
“No,” Olm said. “It was only him.”
They both sat in silence.
She’d never seen him like this. There was something about Olm’s quiet contemplation that dampened her enthusiasm for the new plan. Tomorrow’s problem.
The chill bit into her suit and she sank deeper into her crinkly bedroll and shoved her hands under her arms. Her thoughts turned from the new plan to old plans gone awry. To friends, become enemies. And then, as always, to Caspian, and to the dream of a life, long left behind.
Olm woke her before the sun of dawn spilled its golden blood over the horizon. They saddled up, this time with Olm riding pilot, and Caly leaning back in the cushy passenger seat. When they crossed a rough mountain pass, they found themselves in an ocean of gray and green grass. In the foothills, some enormous mass of cacti crowded out the grass, and created impassable mounds covered in spikes and tall-sprouting stems that waved heavily with bright-colored fruit. Almost like the plants were tempting them to come closer. A herd of scave boars chewed thoughtfully on the outer edges of the cacti mounds, their tongues thicker than the plates of thorny cacti could penetrate. One of them watched Caly and Olm hovering through grass and thorn with bored interest, just watching and chewing.
The foothills descended into a valley, carved by a few slow-moving streams of brown water. Majestic cliffs lined the valley walls, steep and painted with hundreds of segments, each one a different shade of red. Caly found herself wondering how those pathetic little streams could carve something so beautiful. They rode into the narrow beneath the cliffs and, even with the sun high overhead, the light failed to reach them, failed to warm the chill of the shadows.
There was a silhouette at the end of the canyon, standing still with its head upturned and enrobed in sunlight. Caly pointed it out, and Olm slowed the bike to a humming crawl.
“Wait. It’s just rocks,” she said, “Thought it was someone waiting for us.”
But Olm kept the bike tuned low, moving carefully and as soundlessly as he could, the water barely rippling under the repulsor. Even when they passed the stack of rocks (or wind-carved stone, or whatever it was), he kept his form hunched low and his eyes cast up at the increasingly-cracked canyon walls.
“Olm?”
“Dyss,” he said.
“How do you know?”
“I smell it,” Olm sniffed meaningfully.
They turned the last bend of the canyon, and looked down upon a forest of black stone, sprouting from the red sand. No, not stone, Caly thought, as she gazed over the labyrinths of glittering spires and obsidian fangs jutting up from the sand. This is the work of the Dead Ones. Sweeping statues of that ancient, brushed metal stood watch like misshapen sentinels, twisting up from the stone. They marched along the ridge like the backplates of some enormous reptile. Black arches marched up the sides of the valley and when the wind blew through them, it made a sound like a mournful choir, ten thousand voices.
“They walked here, once.” Olm said, wrinkling his nose. His shoulders were so tense, they almost reached his ears. His eyes scanned the black towers and arches and jagged scales bursting from the earth, all that obsidian metal glittering in the rising sun.
“Should we turn back?” Though they were alone, Caly felt the need to whisper, as if something about this place would know they had come. The Bridge was one thing, but even she could feel that gentle, insidious tug in her chest. It was those singing voices in the wind.
“No. You were right the first time. Let fear guide your way, and you will never find your glory.”
Olm leaned over (making the bike tip slightly) and grabbed a fistful of red dirt. He threw it up, letting it shower on his head as muttered some hrutskuld prayer for safe passage, though not in those exact words. It was more like asking Death to turn a blind eye while they crossed, in exchange for a more gruesome end at a later date.
Meanwhile, the wind sang through the blades and arches. An itch grew between her shoulder blades.
“Coordinates say the orphanage is through this valley.” She said.
“What kind of orphanage would be in a place like this?”
“Well,” Caly said, raising her helmet’s volume to be heard over the choir of dead voices, “If the human made it through here, then we can too.”
Olm made a doubtful rumble in his throat. But he pushed the bike forward, and they began the long, winding trek through the maze.
They rambled through jagged teeth and curving towers, around bends of treacherous cliffs. Rainpaths crisscrossed the sands and smooth slabs of rock, tinted red with iron or white from limestone powder. Olm kept blinking, like he was trying to clear his vision, and at one point he asked Caly, “Did you say something?”
“No.”
“Thought I heard … never mind.”
“Let me drive,” Caly said. Olm didn’t argue. He slid back, and started massaging his temples, and muttered something about how it would be better if the dead remembered to stay dead.
The sooner they left this place, the better.
On one sheer cliff, someone had hammered stakes into the rock to use as handholds, but only one stake still remained. There was a cave where a tattered rucksack hidden in the shadows.
“Someone lived here,” she said.
“Must’ve been mad.”
“Or desperate.”
“Or both.”
When the ground became too treacherous, Olm had to lead the bike on foot, slowly hovering behind him as he pulled it with a rope tied around his waist. They had to pull it through a bend, scraping the metal on stone, when a sound up high made them both stop. Stones and pebbles slid down the cliff and skittered over their path, but Caly saw nothing above them.
She turned her scanners on full power, and left them running, even though it drained her suit. She could make up the charge later.
By midday, the Dead One’s ruins dwindled to knee-high shapes, so the sun struck the sharp rocks and the whole valley radiated with its heat, until even Olm was sweating. There wasn’t enough power for Caly’s fans, and her suit stuck to her every time she moved. She took off her gloves, and peeled back her sleeves, but kept her helmet in place.
They trudged up a steep slope with Olm dragging the bike, each footstep only gave a handful of centimeters, each breath leaving her lungs wanting more. At the top, they gasped and drank in the thin air.
Far below, there was a creek, muddy and brown and small enough in some places that Caly thought she might simply step over it. As it rolled down the valley, it collected dozens of other small streams and yet, it never seemed to grow any wider. But there were trees—actual trees—growing along the rocky bank. Some were sheltered in the cliffs, though even they drove their gnarled roots down to the creek. They looked like shriveled old men, bent by the dry centuries. But further up the creek, a copse of trees stood proud and tall above the rest—dark green steeples of the highland pines, fencing in the white-barked guardia trees with their broad leaves arranged like a wall of bright, yellow shields to shade their branches.
Caly’s helmet pinged. It took her a moment to see it, beneath the trees: a fort, with red walls so old, they crumbled seamlessly into the red sand. A single parapet lifted from the walls, shrouded by branches and yellow leaves.
“You ever see an orphanage like that?” she asked.
“Hrutskald don’t have orphanages,” he said, “Only barracks.”
“Oh, right,” Caly said, as if she had known that.
In a way, she supposed courans were the same. If you didn’t have a House, you didn’t have anything. You got sent wherever the ruling Houses sent you, and the rest of your life was written.
She chewed her lip, trying to plan their next move. “If I were a bandit, I’d hole up in there.”
“They do love their trees. Especially ones you can hang people from.”
The fort was quiet and still. Only the trees swayed in the breeze. She could shoot from a distance all day, but this—this was unknown. Caly swallowed, her throat suddenly thick.
A true Cavalier must face far worse than this.
“Think he’s in there?” Olm asked.
Caly put every ounce of her bravado into her reply, “Only one way to find out.”

Hello, travelling with my wife and 11 year old to Whitefish. Staying at the Marriott property in Whitefish so lots of time in the hot tub and their excellent pool during downtimes. Our four day itinerary is as follows:
Monday - Explore Big Mountain. I think the mountain biking will be abit too advanced for my son so will probably just take tram to the top and do the alpine slide.
Tuesday - Rent kayaks at the beach in morning, then we will explore Whitefish and Kalispell for some shopping as we are Canadian so lots of stores we don't have. Farmers Market in the evening
Wednesday - Going to the Sun Road. We do not have vehicle reservation, will try for day before pass. If not, we plan to get to Apgar gate at 3PM. Looks like sunset is around 9PM. Plan to do Hidden Lake lookout trail at Logans Pass. I think that should be enough time. I do know about the half hour delay re: construction.
Thursday - Explore Flathead Lake including the boat tour there. Reservations needed, or can one usually get day of tickets? Any recommendations.
Are any of the days too much or too little?

2023.05.29 18:18 RipperRex1996 Adding New Species To Existing Reserves: My Thoughts!

Hirschfelden:
  1. Mandarin Duck (New): A close relative of the wood duck, and just as, if not more spectularly plumaged. There is an invasive population in Germany.
  2. Ferruginous Duck (New): a common duck of Germany.
Layton Lake:
  1. Stone Sheep (New): Found throughout central and northern British Columbia, it could give some extra life to fill in the otherwise empty mountains of Layton.
  2. Canvasback (New): One of the larger huntable duck species of North America, and one that is likely highly requested by our local duck hunters.
  3. Surf Scoter (New): A striking sea duck, would look fantastic in many lodges!
Medved-Taiga National Park:
  1. Siberian Roe Deer (New): a much larger and impressive species of Roe deer, that are found throughout Siberia.
Vurhonga Savanna:
  1. Klipspringer (New): a small antelope well adapted to rocky terrain; these little guys can help make the rather empty plateau region feel livelier.
  2. Egyptian Goose (New): one of the most common waterfowl of Southern Africa.
  3. Yellow-billed duck (New): one of the most common waterfowl of Southern Africa, with a striking yellow bill.
  4. Helmeted guineafowl (New): its sounds are one of the staples of Africa and is a common hunted upland bird in South Africa.
  5. Common Impala (New): one of the most hunted antelope species of Southern Africa, and one of the most populous as well.
  6. Plains Zebra (New): one of the most famous of Africa's megafauna, and one of the most striking.
  7. Common Eland (New): The largest antelope species, easily making it a Clas. 9.
  8. Bush Duiker (New): a commonly hunted smaller antelope found throughout Sub-Saharan Africa
Parque Fernando:
  1. Rosy-billed pochard (New): Argentina is one of the world's premier duck hunting destinations, why it only has one duck species is so odd to me. The Pochard is one of Argentinas most famous duck species.
  2. Silver Teal (New): a striking duck species commonly hunted in Argentina.
  3. Ringed Teal (New): another commonly hunted duck species in Argentina.
  4. White-Cheeked Pintail (New): a striking relative of the Northern Pintail.
  5. Chiloe Wigeon (New): a striking relative of both the Eurasian and American Wigeon.
  6. Pere Davids Deer (New): originally from China, there is an introduced population of this bizzare deer species in Argentina.
Yukon Valley:
  1. Sitka Deer (New): found in southern Alaska, this deer can easily be slotted in along the forests alongside the lakes and rivers. Highly requested by deer hunters.
  2. Dall Sheep (New): one of the biggest surprises was this species not being present on YK's release and has been highly requested since. There might have to be an expansion of this map to include more mountainous terrain for it, however.
  3. King Eider (New): one of the most striking sea ducks.
  4. White-tailed Ptarmigan (New): an upland bird to add to YK!
  5. Wolverine (New): a feisty large mustelid, requested by quite a few people.
Cuatro Colinas Game Reserve:
  1. Red-legged Partridge (New): one of the most common upland birds of Spain.
Silver Ridge Peaks:
  1. Dusky Grouse (New): a species of blue grouse common in the Rockies, adds an upland bird.
Te Awora National Park:
  1. Paradise Duck (New): a native duck of New Zealand, why it didn't make it in initially is anyone's guess.
  2. Himalayan Tahr (New): along with Chamois, they are popular mountain game of NZ. Why they weren't in TA at launch is anyone's guess, despite an easter egg of them being present on map.
Rancho del Arroyo:
  1. Gambel's Quail (New): one of the most popular game birds of the American southwest, why they didn't make it to Arroyo, yet Pheasant did is anyone's guess. Striking little birds!
  2. Coues Deer (New): The grey ghost of the southwest, and distinct from regular White-tailed deer. Would fit in perfectly to the western and northern regions alongside the Pronghorn, Javelina, and Bobcats.
  3. Goulds Turkey (New): with snow white tail feathers, this wild turkey is one of the most striking. Common in Northern Mexico, it would be a great addition to the mountainous pine forests of the eastern part of the map, while the Rio sticks to the low desert.
Mississippi Acres:
  1. Wood Duck (New): a striking duck, and one of the most beautiful members of North Americas waterfowl roster.
  2. American Black Duck (New): another common duck of the Mississippi region.
  3. Gadwall (New): another bird to add to the roster.
  4. Northern Pintail (New): a popular and beautiful duck of North America.
  5. Osceola Turkey (New): yes, I know, I know. Osceola Turkeys are only found in Florida but given how we aren't going to get any more North American maps, and how the devs will take some creative liberties at times, might as well ensure the Grand Slam of turkeys makes it in game. Can be added to regions where Eastern Turkeys aren't.
Revontuli Coast:
*Can't really think of any other additional species to add! *
New England Mountains:
  1. Ruffed Grouse (New): A popular game bird of the Northeast, would give NEM another flagship species.
  2. Woodcock (New): Once again, a popular upland bird of the Northern woodlands, giving NEM another new species.

Let me know your guys opinions on this!

2023.05.29 18:18 zucchinibread987 1st short tour-- NCR & York Heritage Rail Trails Trip Report

1st short tour-- NCR & York Heritage Rail Trails Trip Report
Edit: Added pictures because I didn't realize how to include them initially
Hi all!
I just got back from my very first, very short, bike tour. I decided at the last minute to use the long weekend for a bike trip and realized I could bike the entire NCR trail (AKA the Torrey C Brown Rail Trail) and connecting York Heritage Rail Trail. Here's how it went and what I learned.
The 2 trails are 48 miles total, mostly compacted stone and fairly flat. I used my commuter bike, basically an old Giant mountain bike, and my commuter panniers. I started on the Maryland side and I was able to take the light rail from Baltimore to a station about a mile from the trailhead. I biked 72 miles on day 1 (from Ashland, MD to York, PA, to complete the entire two trails, and then back 24 miles to the B&B I stayed in). I had wanted to camp, but the campsite wouldn’t call me back– probably full for the holiday weekend– so I sprung for the B&B. I’m glad I did, because I could bike with less stuff, and I learned what I could handle on the trail without a heavier load. 72 miles was definitely pushing it for me– the last 10-15 miles were hard– but doable. (I’m active but I had never ridden my bike more than ~30 miles in a day before– not sure what possessed me to think I could do this– but I’m so glad I did!)
The trails are beautiful and frequently follow rivers. In PA, the trail runs through several small towns and through downtown York. There are a ton of historic sites along the trail– a lot of the old railroad stations have been converted into museums.
The second day was harder– I definitely couldn’t have managed another long day. But I only had to go 24 miles. I had some minor issues with my bike and panniers, which I was able to take care of myself. It was another beautiful day and I was sorry when it ended. I’ll definitely be doing more bike touring (and hopefully camping next time!), now that I know my limits and I know my bike can handle it.

My bike after finishing the trail south to north

Things to note for others interested in the trip:
  • There are a lot of bathrooms and places to get water along the trail– from water pumps and port-a-potties to old train stations and shops. I brought 2L of water and I really would have been fine with one, stopping to refill it more frequently. Maybe bring more on really hot days.
  • There were also plenty of places to stop for food. Not so many in Maryland (there’s the Monktown Hotel and a snowball stand in Parkton, but that’s really it, and if you’re riding early in the morning, those will all be closed). In PA, though, you won’t go long without being pretty close to a restaurant or gas station.
  • There were fix-it stations and air pumps fairly frequently along the trail. There’s also a few bike shops.
  • The best parking in Maryland is probably at the NCR Mile 2 lot. There’s limited parking at the very start of the trail. But taking the light rail there is even better :) In PA it looked like there was a ton of parking at the county park where the York Heritage trail ended.
  • If you decide to take the light rail to the MD trailhead, know that Ashland Rd, which leads to the development that the trail starts in, has a huge hill, no sidewalks, and almost no shoulder. It’s downhill on the way to the trail, uphill back. I was practically crawling up the hill; luckily, the cars going 40+ mph past me gave me a wide berth.

2023.05.29 17:51 yycTechGuy Cycling in Calgary is amazing.

This spring I decided to cycle more. I'm a long time cyclist but on and off for the last decade or so. I haven't cycled much in Calgary for a long time.
I'm amazed and how nice it is cycling in Calgary these days.
First off, the bike lanes. Cycling in traffic used to be fearsome as cars would zip by really close. Now with the bike lanes, even the painted ones, motorists are much more respectful and give space. What a novel concept.
The City has widened and improved many paths. Not just for cyclists but also for pedestrians. And in many instances the city has separate paths for each. This is a dramatic improvement over the way it used to be.
Cyclists can now take their bike on the C Train any time. I live close to a C train station so this means the whole city is now within my cycling range. Why drive anywhere ? I went downtown twice on the weekend with my bike. Didn't have to worry about parking. Didn't have to load my bike into my car. Once you are to the area you want to explore, getting somewhere is way quicker than walking.
There are actually neat places to visit along bike paths. Calgary is starting to feel a bit like a European city that is designed around pedestrians and cyclists rather than cars. I'm seeing other cyclists at these places. The south side of the riverbank is so nice now. The East Village area needs more trees, but its nice. Fish Creek is great. Glenmore Reservoir is fun, but there is a lot of foot traffic on it. Bowness Park. Bowness itself is nice. The bike lanes are a huge improvement.
Everywhere I went this weekend there were a ton of cyclists. And downtown there are a lot of people on scooters too. Great to see. eBikes are getting popular. I see people on eBikes that I suspect wouldn't be on a non pedal bike.
17th Ave is a nightmare pedestrian and bike wise. Which is a shame because there are some good places along it. Traffic noise is terrible along that street if you sit on a patio. I'd love to see the City remove the parking lanes on 17th and use that space for bikes and walking but parking is already non existent if you drive down there.
Google Maps is a great way to figure out how to get somewhere on a bike. But it would be nicer if it had the option to select Ctrain and bike as the transportation method.
I wish there was a good bike route from SW Calgary to Bragg Creek. I've cycled there several times. I always meet other cyclists going there. It's a good destination but there is a lot of traffic and the shoulder on 22 isn't the smoothest.
Happy cycling.
Edit
Is there a way to get to me and my bike to Canmore or Banff or highway 40 or Lake Louise without driving ? Like public transit or a bus ? I'd love to do cycling daytrips and not have to use a car.
It would be so cool if there was a train from Calgary to say Revelstoke that one could do day/weekend trips on, like in Europe. Sit on the train for a couple hours, ride, have drinks/dinner in a mountain town then take the train home again. I'd love to do that with skiing too.

2023.05.29 17:36 rotterdamn8 I just finished a great trip; includes off the beaten path places, art museums, super fun bike rides, and plenty of sashimi and sake

Hi. I just came back from a two week trip. I lived in Osaka and Tokyo some years ago so this trip was really meeting up with old friends again and also going for some new adventures.
It's so affordable now (if you have USD, which is strong against the yen). I ate and drank so well! I went to a lot of izakaya, tried various local and regional specialties (unagi around Hamamatsu, akafuku in Ise, for example). All for waaaayyyyy cheaper than what I spend at home in Philly or NYC.
I also did a bit of biking. In Japan you often get a mamachari, which is like "your momma's chariot", or a bike your Mom would ride. With a basket. But hey they're fun for just cruising around! I've decided biking around the countryside is one of my favorite travel activities.
The main idea of this trip was:
Some more details:
Tokyo
Hamamatsu
Ise
Nabari
Nara
Osaka
Some expenses (USD):
My takeaway: after traveling in many places, I continue to find that some of the best experiences are those unplanned. Any trip requires plans obviously, but with a little luck and a traveler's intuition, I'm getting better at arriving at those fun spontaneous moments.
Ask me any questions. Thanks for reading.

2023.05.29 17:05 sauna_apartment Carless: Escarpment Trail, the Catskills NY

I've been meaning to do this for awhile as I've found the info regarding backpacking without a car in the NYC area lacking, half-baked, or in practice, untrue. The thread in the sidebar is excellent, but AT focused. I'll see a post that say take this bus service to a certain town and taxi to the trailhead, but what it may not say is that there is no service to call a taxi on arrival or that line only runs on weekdays that direction. Not to say I won't be repeating common knowledge as I definitely will, but hopefully you'll find something in my logistics useful for planning your own ventures sans car.
A little bit about me: I am a lightweight backpacker (slowly working on dropping my last few ounces) living in Queens, NY. I generally love the public (and private) transit in NYC metro area, although it always could be improved and there are aspects that are deeply frustrating, large and small. In addition to not having a car, I also work a 9-5 job; this and future trail reports will reflect that I often only have a weekend to enact my plans.
The Escarpment Trail
Buy a ticket on the Trailways bus line from Port Authority to Windham, NY. On Saturdays, there is a bus that departs at 8am. That is the one you want. The Trailways' stations are in the bottom of Port Authority, terminals 28-34. Double check your bus is correct with the attendant as the what is on the directory and what terminal they're actually leaving from may be at odds. When boarding, tell the driver that you want the Escarpment Trailhead Parking lot, which is slightly before Windham; in between Windham, East Windham, and Hensonville; after Cairo; on route 23. If you pass Smitty's Nursery & Landscape on the left you've gone too far. I didn't know you could ask the driver to drop you off at a non-designated stop, but he said it was okay as long as its on route. I'm assuming this is a driver by driver thing, but as long as you're not an ass about it, I bet they'll say yes. However, I did not know this perk until a woman request to be let off before Windham, and I got off with her and proceeded to backtrack to the trailhead on route 23. If you have to walk the shoulder, maybe you can hitch a ride, but you'd be luckier than me.
Make sure you have water. At the trailhead there is a stream. There is no water after that until 0.4 miles past Dutcher Notch, which is ~12 miles away.
Starting from the first sign off 23, the trail is very well marked (until North South Campground), simply follow the blue markers. A commenter on Alltrails writes:
If you can get Wyndham and BlackHead out of the way on the first day the second day is pretty smooth after the initial climb out of the notch. Amazing view after amazing view.
Views translate to ascents. Climbing Blackhead was confirmed steep and arduous after already hiking 9 miles. But this is the hardest climb during the trip, so once summited, it's all smooth sailing. Day 1 clocked about 11 miles (excluding walk to the trailhead).
I camped somewhere on the backside of Arizona Mountain overlooking the valley. It was gorgeous, but unexpectedly buggy for no water nearby and a slight breeze. If you're hiking this in two days one night as I was, you need to get to around the Notch. In the notch, there is an intersection between the Escarpment trail (straight), the Colgate Lake Trail (right), and the Dutcher Notch Trail (left). A short ways down the Dutcher Notch Trail there is a spring (a pipe in the rock) where you can filter water. This is the last place to filter water before North Lake.
Not much to report for the first half of the day; the Catskills are beautiful. There is a very cool plane wreckage. The Escarpment trail gives views to the NorthEast, and often times you can see the Green Mountains, the Whites, and the Berkshires, depending on the clarity. Eventually you'll reach North Point on North Mountain. Here, you'll start to encounter day hikers staying at NorthSouth Campground. I was fairly alone for most of the path; some families at the start, a few day hikers going to Windham High Peak, but very few backpackers. Which imo is preferable; I like the solitude. The frequency of day hikers increased the closer you get to the campground, but most of them were heading out as I was heading in, and only one had a bluetooth speaker.
Reaching North Lake, you are a jungle person breaching civilization. People are grilling and getting stuff out of their SUVs, while you smell and swim in your skivvies. Or at least, that's what I did. After a nice dip, find the blue markers at the back of the campground. There is no more markings for the Escarpment Trail although you're still on it. The signs will say to Catskill Mountain House Site and to Boulder Rock. Stay on the blue markers.
Eventually you'll come to Kaaterskill Falls. I only went to the lookout not the base, as I was unsure how much more walking I'd have to do and I was anxious about the time (around 2pm, the bus back was 5:55pm.) Also Kaaterskill Falls was overrun by tourists, which are different than day hikers. I can't complain as Kaaterskill Falls has been a tourist attraction since the mid 1800s, but after two days in the peaceful woods, I wasn't keen about been around all the activity.
Instead of finishing the Escarpment Trail at Schutt Rd. Parking Lot, take the Kaaterskill Rail Trail to the Haines Falls Train Station. Its about a 1.5 miles of pathway that brings you back to route 23A. At 23A, take a right and walk along the shoulder for about 2 miles into the town of Tannersville, NY. On 23A, stop at the Twilight General Store for an optional ice cream, however the key stop is Bear & Fox Provisions in Tannersville. Great selection of beer and cider, one of which the proprietor brews from apple trees from the side of the road.
Catch the 5:55pm Trailways bus from outside the pharmacy (5980 Main St.), which after a brief stop in Kingston, returns to Port Authority. I would recommend buying both ticket ahead of time as I had varying degrees of mediocre service the whole trip. Day 2 clocked about ~14 miles (including walking to Tannersville)
The Escarpment is great trail for an experienced hiker. Like other Catskill hikes, it's as beautiful as it is difficult. It's very possible to do it in a weekend, but a slower paced individual or group may want to do it in three days, two nights which may affect bus times and accessibility. Enjoy a carless excursion and remember to bring an eye mask and ear plugs for the bus ride.

2023.05.29 16:50 Panasit My Students Tried to Eat My Liver

I taught at a strict vocational college that forced students to wear uniforms and bow to elders. As someone who let students call him by his first name and played Valo with them, I was not surprised when my boss called me into his office. I was ready to defend myself, but I was hit with: “Are you aware that your students are descendants of a cannibal?”
Truthfully? Sort of. I knew that in 1600, colonists invaded the island and enslaved the natives. A pirate named Sur-Linyao slaughtered the colonists and became the island’s folk hero.
Murals and statues of Sur-Linyao were all over the island. His signature look was his very long tongue sticking out of his mouth. The symbol on his pirate flag was a six-dot triangle. Technically, Sur-Linyao didn't eat ALL of the colonists, just one organ. First, he tied each colonist to a tree. Sur-Linyao then cut out each man’s liver and ate it raw with chili paste while staring into the person’s eyes. Sur-Linyao then threw that bleeding and squirming colonist into a dirty shallow pond, where Komodo dragons, attracted to the blood, devoured the victim alive.
The school rector handed me a photograph. It showed a male Westerner smiling while kicking a statue of Sur-Linyao while two women cheered him on. The three in the photo were humanitarian workers. Traces of candle wax at the base of Sur-Linyao’s statue showed that the islanders worshipped the liver-eating pirate, and for some reason, the workers felt they needed to do something about that. The three thought that their 6 months long relationship-building with natives on the island earned them enough goodwill for them to get away with that kind of stunt. Just a few hours after the photo was taken, the hacked body parts of all three were found scattered all over the beach. Their livers were missing.
The rector then stared right at me, preparing me for his next sentence. “Before you think that I’m a racist who is prejudging the modern-day natives as liver-eating savages based on what their ancestors did hundreds of years ago, you should know that the killings happened in 2017. To put things in perspective, the Nintendo Switch was already out.”
The rector then revealed that he called me into his office to ask me about an incident a day before.
There was a report that a White man with a goatee whistled at a native girl inside a convenience store on the south side of the island. He asked if that was me.
I was shocked. That was the reason he called me in here? I told him no. Apparently, there were only about 30 Caucasians on this island of 20,000 people, and only a few had a goatee. The rector then told me that a cop and the girl’s father and an older brother went to my dorm to look for me but I wasn’t there.
After seeing the look of horror on my face, wondering what would have happened if I was at the dorm, the rector told me not to panic and that he will talk to the cop and the girl’s family on my behalf. The rector ended our meeting with, “Just be careful AJ. We are the minority here. I hope to god you know what that means.”
For the past few classes, I started letting my students analyze Western media and culture. Thanks to globalization, these island kids watched and played the same media content as others their age around the world: Stranger Things, MCU, Fortnite, etc. As their teacher, I was often asked to comment on controversial topics like: “AJ, what do you think about a Neo-Nazi being punched before he does anything?” “AJ, what do you think about Black Lives Matter?” “AJ, what do you think about Go Woke Go Broke?” “AJ, what do you think about Don’t-Say-Gay-Bill?”
My answer was always to not ask me what I think, but for them to gather information from various sources and come to their own conclusion. Since more than ⅔ of the class were teenage males, their views were… not very much aligned with mine. But even though I disagreed with them, I felt like we had a healthy discussion.
I then noticed a student, Stephanie, seemed very unhappy as she shoved her notebook into her bag at the end of class. “You know I used to love your class. But I think these past few classes were shits.”
I was confused. Stephanie was one of my best students. She always sat in front and answered all questions correctly last semester. I asked her right away what was wrong.
“Is it going to kill you to just outright say that racism is wrong, misogyny is wrong, homophobia is wrong, and Naziism is wrong? Why does it have to always have to be a healthy debate?” I was shocked by her response. I told her that I don’t think a teacher should just outright tell students what to think, especially when it comes to social issues.
I mean, of course, I think racism, misogyny, Naziism, and homophobia are wrong. But I guess I would feel like I was brainwashing the students if I just tell them: this is what you must believe.
Stephanie scoffed. “Well, now Benny and his gang think that you approved of their homophobia and misogyny. You didn’t want to correct them not because you are this free-thinker, but in reality you just want them to think that you are a “too cool to care” edge lord just like them, right? Do you think the disenfranchised people enjoy watching others debate whether or not they should have the right to exist and feel safe? How would you feel if one day the island natives have a healthy debate about whether you should live or die?” Stephanie then stormed out.
Needless to say, I was not in a good mood that evening. I took it out on the students playing survivors while I was playing as a killer on Dead by Daylight. After getting slaughtered the students were not happy. “AJ, why were you tunneling me?”
A student named Benny asked after I sacrificed him within fifteen minutes. I thought that was rich coming from Benny, who, as a killer, only played Leatherface and Facecamp-ed all his victims the entire match. My response was snarky. “Benny, why don’t you try hiding like the other survivors instead of running around the map like a decapitated chicken?” The other students laughed. Benny didn’t respond right away, which made me feel kind of bad. Benny eventually responded after about two minutes. “I can’t wait to eat your liver, AJ.” My heart dropped to the floor. Did Benny just threaten me? I was waiting for the other students to call him out on that comment, but they were silent. After about thirty seconds, Benny continued, “I bet your liver tastes delicious, AJ. I bet it is so sweet and juicy I won’t even need a chili sauce.” The day after, I tried to spin that whole experience as a teachable moment. I decided the next class lecture was going to be about influential people and why people are so divided over them.
I listed some controversial ‘a hero to some, a villain to others’ figures for them.
Che Guevara Napoleon Edward Snowden
Hoping to have some more healthy debates. But the students do not have strong enough opinions about the figures that were so distant in relevance to them.
So, I did something that was probably the biggest mistake of my life. I asked them about the island's liver-eating hero, Sur-Linyao. Benny said that there’s nothing controversial about Sur-Linyao unless some douchebag wants to sympathize with the genocidal colonists he slaughtered.
I reminded Benny that if someone were to hear his comments in the previous class, they could accuse him of sympathizing with sexist racist homophobic Nazis too. Like an arrogant idiot, instead of leaving it at that, I decided it was healthy to hit them with some truth about Sur-Linyao.
Sur-Linyao was a horrifying villain to the islanders before the colonists arrived. He was a pirate after all. Sur-Linyao would regularly pillage several villages on the island, killing several innocent people in the process. Seeing the six-dots triangle jolly-roger from the distance must have been a nightmare for the islanders at the time.
And Sur-Linyao didn’t kill the colonists out of the goodness of his heart. There were pieces of evidence that showed Sur-Linyao worked with the colonists for years, and in the end, betrayed the colonists just because he wanted to rob them. Benny shook his head. He told me that several people in this class were direct descendants of Sur-Linyao, including him. I chuckled, thinking that he just WISHED he was a descendant of Sur-Linyao. But Benny said he could prove it.
More than half of the male students in the class stood up. They slightly tilted their head down but their eyes kept on looking forward, staring at me. Suddenly, their tongue started to slither out of their mouth. The tongues were too long, longer than a foot, but it was not the length that unsettled me, but the way it wiggled out of each of their mouth as if they were separate creatures. I was horrified looking at the dozen students standing in front of me, staring at me with their long tongues dangling out.
Benny then said, “Do you know what the six-dots triangle means, AJ? It means that the man seeing it was about to lose his liver.” I always parked my car a bit further away from the school because I didn’t want to fight with other faculty members over the parking space underneath the building. Besides, I didn’t mind walking a bit since there was a nice view of the ocean. As I was getting out of the car, I saw that someone painted the six-dots triangle on an abandoned water tank in the middle of the field. It was new, I didn’t see it the day before. And I was more than certain it was meant for me to see. No one parked where I parked and the surrounding area was abandoned.
I went and told the school administrator about this. They said that the six-dot triangle symbol was a symbol of Sur-Linyao who has pictures all over the island, including that symbol on his forehead.
It was not an intimidation symbol like a swastika and that I should relax.
Frustrated, I went back to my dorm. The view from my balcony was almost great, but there was a weird Ferris wheel-like structure blocking part of it. I didn’t even know what the circular structure was, but there seemed to be a bunch of neon light bulbs attached to it. I hoped it never got turned on or else I wouldn’t be able to sleep.
As I went into my closet, I found a T-shirt that was not mine. On it was a phrase, ‘I’m the Other White Meat’ on it. Why was this in my closet? Did the dry cleaner mix in someone else’s clothes with mine? Who would dry clean a T-shirt? I realized then that my room may have been broken into.
I was nervous and scared out of my mind. Am I being targeted or am I just overreacting? Is the entire island gaslighting me, or was it just Benny and his friends? Heck, it could have been Stephanie doing this, trying to teach me a lesson.
I opened Discord to see if some of my students want to play some games, but none of them were online, at least not in the group chat I set up. Some of them changed their profile picture to a six-dot triangle, including Benny.
That evening, I went to a gas station to fill up my car. As I was just about finished, I saw a truck coming down a steep hill, heading straight into the station. It was an old truck, but an intimidatingly large one, and loud. Then, I saw the six-dot triangle symbol painted on the side of the truck.
Logically, I shouldn’t have panicked. The symbol was a symbol of the island’s folk hero and the gas station is brightly lit and full of people. But out of nowhere, this feeling of dread overwhelmed me. The hair on my arm just rose straight up. I felt chills as if something was telling me to get out of the gas station now. I trusted my instinct and quickly started my bike and bolted out of there.
The next day, I walked past a hallway where a colleague named Beth was putting up a poster made by her students. The poster was showcasing English words that came from French. For some reason, there were also photos of faculty members floating alongside words like “Garage”, “à la carte”, and “Cache”.
I stopped in my track when I saw my photo with the word, ‘Foie Gras’ underneath it.
That word and my picture seemed so out of place being in its own little corner on the poster. I almost had a panic attack right there. Another threat? Are you kidding me? I thought. Beth asked me what was wrong. I decided to tell her.
That evening, I went to have dinner with Beth and her husband Jan on the beach. Just three White expats talking. I told them about what I had been experiencing in the past few days. The three dotted symbols painted where I parked, the comment from the student made on the game chat, the mysterious T-shirt, the racial profiling, all of it. “You are being very racist,” Beth said right at the very second I had just realized that I never really liked her.
She continued, “Don’t you get it, AJ? The students are threatening to eat your liver because they know you are a racist white man who thinks they were going to eat your liver. Kids will always try to exploit what they think the adults are afraid of. It’s your fault for showing them your cards.
Have you ever been outside of the States before? Do you not know how to be a minority? You came to an island paradise with so much special privilege but you suddenly have a male Karen racist nervous breakdown moment because you think that your teenage students are going to eat your liver? Quite frankly, I am very disappointed in you."
Her husband Jan tried to save the mood of the dinner. “So AJ, what are your plans for when the island shut off the power on July 7th?”
For one day every year, the island shut off all electricity for maintenance. Nothing electronic will work on that day, most importantly the ATM and the Internet. People, even the island natives, would go to the mainland for one day. There’s a problem with that idea. The ferry itself takes 3 hours to reach the mainland. And, with so many people thinking of doing the same thing, the line at the dock will be extremely long, both to the mainland in the morning, and back from the mainland in the evening.
For the last two years, I rode out the annual power outage by just chillaxing on the island. But this year, a Facebook post by Benny made me reconsider.
“I just want to say, my favorite teacher is AJ. He surely delivered. And soon I will de-liver him.”
Jan said that he and Beth will drive their speedboat to the mainland, which is 5 times faster than the ferry. They are also taking the rector with them. Judging from the way Beth glared at me, I don’t think she will say yes if I asked her if I could come too.
On the day of the power outage, I waited almost five hours in line to get my car onto the ferry. The ticket machine no longer works so everything was written on a notecard with pen and paper, which I found amusing. When the ticket man came to my car. He said to me that I have to wait for the next one. I looked at the ferry and it was not even half full. I asked him why and he pretended to suddenly not understand English.
I looked in my rearview mirror and then saw it, the truck with the six-dot triangle painted on its side only three cars behind me. How did it get there? I didn’t see it behind me before. I realized then that the truck wanted to get on the next ferry with me. I told the ticket holder that I will leave my car there and I will get on the leaving ferry with just me. Before he could say anything, I quickly maneuvered out of the line and parked in front of a cafe. The ticket boy said I couldn’t park there. I asked him if he owned the cafe, then quickly ran and jumped onto the suddenly departing Ferry.
After riding the ferry many times, I figured out that the top deck gave me the least motion sickness. I climbed up there and found a surprising person. Stephanie. She smiled at me, which made me so glad. I didn’t think what I did was something so bad that she would be holding a long grudge anyway. We made small talk, I asked her about what she was planning on doing for the day, etc. After a bit, I couldn’t help myself and showed her Benny’s Facebook post. I always thought she didn’t like Benny. I told her I was disappointed in him and was so shocked that he would threaten me like that.
I looked up at Stephanie and was shocked to see her eyes bulged out and her foot-long tongue dangling from her mouth. “Just like Voltaire, I may disagree with what Benny says, but I will defend to the death his right to say it." I was so scared, I backed away automatically. But, the teacher in me still corrected her and said that Voltaire didn’t say that. She laughed, “Good. Voltaire was a smart person. Only an idiot would say something like that.”
I moved down to the lowest level where the cars and the smoking passengers were. I tried not to fall asleep as I could feel the eyes of the other passengers staring at me.
The sound of people barfing almost made me want to barf myself. I went and sat on the edge of the front of the ferry. The wind blowing into my face did calm me a little. I was scared and frustrated. I wondered if I should just never go back to the island after reaching the mainland.
After looking at my watch and realizing that it had been three hours, I looked out the window and saw what made my soul leave my body. We were heading to the island? I didn’t even realize we had turned around.
I asked the ferry driver what was going on. He said there was a storm coming and he has to head back. Besides, it was already close to 5 PM, and the power should be coming back on soon.
I was extremely angry that I was about to be back on the island. Stephanie was nowhere to be found on the ferry also. Since I was farsighted, I could see the tires of my car were slashed.
There were also a couple of men standing there doing nothing, blocking my path toward my car. There was no longer any doubt in my mind that the natives were planning to do something to me. I was targeted and was about to be beaten or killed for whatever reason.
I surprised them all by jumping from the ferry before it was properly docked and sprinting in the opposite direction of where my car was. I climbed up the steep hills next to the road leading to the dock and disappeared into the woods The light was not coming back on and it was getting dark.
I was shaking in fear but I had to calm myself so I could think of the next move with a clear head. I wondered if Beth and Jan came back from the mainland yet. I could ask them to use their boat or at least hide me, and if they say no, at this point, I was at a level of desperation where I was willing to just cause chaos until they let me. On my way to their house, I had to pass my dorm. I considered going to gather some of my things until I saw something moving in the dark.
I almost peed my pants from fright when I saw a floating pair of eyeballs approaching my dorm. Despite everything else being in complete darkness, the eyes of a person and his dangling red tongue were glowing in the dark. I had never seen anything like this. Several more pairs of eyeballs and long red tongues emerged from the dark woods.
I couldn’t tell if the floating eyeballs and tongue belonged to Benny or any of my students, but they were right outside my dorm. As my eyes started to get used to the darkness and started to see shapes, I could see that they were each holding a machete. I quietly made my way to Beth and Jan’s house. When I got to their boathouse, there were flies everywhere. I tried to brush them away, but I could feel the thickness of the swarm. I felt like I was touching a bunch of floating chunks of meat.
I saw their boat at the dock. So did they come back? But why wouldn’t they turn on their boat’s light? I finally decided to use my phone flashlight to help me search for the boat key inside the boat house. I didn’t use my phone earlier because I was trying to conserve battery and also I didn’t want to draw attention to where I was. As soon as I shined the phone’s flashlight inside the boathouse, I was shocked to find the hacked-up heads of Beth, Jan, and the school’s rector covered in flies. Suddenly, I heard a wood creaking sound coming from outside. I quickly grabbed the boat key and jumped into the couple’s speed boat.
I hurriedly start the boat and just drove off, not caring about anything else. I used my phone’s compass to find the direction towards the mainland and I just kept going.
Suddenly, lights came back on the island. It shined brightly behind me as a nuclear bomb had just been detonated. I couldn’t help but look back, and then I saw it: a giant face formed by the neon lights, making the entire island look like it had a demonic face. The circular Ferris-wheel-like structure that was outside my dorm’s balcony was part of one of the giant face’s eyes.
I told myself to just ignore it and kept on driving. It was their world and they didn’t want me in it. I could do nothing but kept on going into the darkness.

2023.05.29 14:33 Defiance42 Japan Trip Report: Keeping Strictly Kosher in Japan & More!

Tokyo-Lake Kawaguchiko-Kyoto-Osaka

The trip was my wife and I (upper 20s/lower 30s) for 10 days (not including 2 flight days) in May just after the end of Golden Week. It was our first trip to Japan and we had an amazing time! We did a lot of the standard tourist activities, but our perspective as kosher-observant travelers is a bit more unique so I figured I'd start the post with it. Feel free to skip past that section if it doesn't interest you.
Keeping Kosher and Sabbath Observance in Japan
Tourist Tips and Cultural Observations
Hotel Reviews
Trip Highlights
Slight Disappointments
We enjoyed everything we did in Japan, but I'll just point out two things that didn't quite live up to expectations.
I struggled to list any disappointments whatsoever. We had a really amazing time overall. Not sure when we’ll have a chance to go back, but I hope we get to one day!
Edit: Added some tips related to takyubin. Can't believe I forgot!

2023.05.29 06:44 BrewBoys92 50km Scenic Ride?

Hi everyone, I am visiting Halifax later this week and am looking for recommendations of a scenic ride of around 50km for Saturday morning. I mostly ride gravel and xc mtb trails at home and would like a scenic gravel ride, but think a road ride might be the best plan to cover some distance and see the coast while there.
Looking at some maps I'm thinking of doing the Sambro Loop, taking Old Sambro road out of Halifax and coming back up along the coast on Ketch Harbour. Is this a popular route for cyclists? Is there a bit of a shoulder to ride on these roads or will I be right on the lane with traffic? Will there be much car traffic early Saturday morning? Are there any gravel alternative routes you'd recommend?
Any other route recommendations with more gravel?
Also looking for recommendations for bike rentals in the city, is there anywhere else to go aside from I Heart Bikes at the waterfront?
Thanks for any help and suggestions!
