Would anyone know how likely it is to come off the waitlist for La Aldea the graduate housing on campus? I’ll be starting a PhD here in the Fall and I’ve been consistently re-affirming my interest on the grad housing portal but is it even worth doing? I’d much prefer to live on campus but if this is pointless and I have to start looking for off campus housing then I’ll start focusing my efforts there.

Recently switched from coax to fiber. Gateway 6 modem/router in bridge mode and Google Nest mesh pods. Wi-Fi signal throughout the house is good. All good there.
As far as TV goes, I have two TV’s using the Optimum Stream boxes and two using Apple TV boxes.
Here’s is the functionality that I lost after switching from coax to fiber:

1. I can no longer pause live TV
2. I can no longer rewind live TV (this one is big for me. Apparently I rewind a lot because I really miss this functionally lol)
3. When I am in the Guide, I can no longer punch in a channel and go directly to that channel in the Guide. Instead I have to go up or down the Guide using the Navigation Pad on the remote to get to the channel. If I am on channel 2 and want to see what is on channel 248, I have to scroll through the Guide from 2 to 248. Not that big a deal, because if you hold down the Nav Pad, it scrolls pretty quickly, but still, I’d rather be able to just punch in a number and go to it.
4. There no search function for the TV. With coax, I could select the Search button on the remote and type in “baseball”, for instance, and it would bring up all of the TV shows related to baseball. I have tried using the Google Assistant functionality on the new fiber remote control, but it does not include OptimumTV in its results. However, I do like using it to change channels (i.e saying “Channel 2” and having the tv change to that channel)

If someone reading this knows of a way to do any of these four things mentioned above, please let me know.
One other note: when using the Apple TV box, if you switch channels to a movie or show that is already in progress, you can restart it from the beginning! Very neat. But only the Apple TV box, and not the Optimum Stream box, allows this.

I just found this group and am excited to look further into it, that said I apologize if this is ramble-y.
I am the middle kid of 6 home schooled siblings. My older two siblings went to private school until 1st and 3rd grade respectively and then me through the last of the kids were homeschooled from kindergarten onward. 4 of us have graduated college with the 5th about to start in the fall. Looking back, if you’d have asked me at any point during my schooling if I liked homeschooling the answer would have been a resounding “yes!” but now I’m starting to realize it wasn’t great.
After about 2nd grade, my mom was pretty hands off. Unless it was a group subject, we were supposed to do our work on our own unless we needed help. (And then good luck getting her off the phone long enough to actually help) I basically skipped 4th grade because I just wrote down the work I was supposed to do without actually doing it unless someone asked. Somehow I managed to not struggle too badly missing all that (go me, I guess?) but it amazes me now looking back that no one caught that until after I started 5th grade.
Then there was the lack of socialization. If I heard “homeschoolers are better socialized because they can talk to people other than their peers” once I heard it a thousand times. The thing is I was never around my peers so of course I talked to other people. It was the only way to talk to anyone outside my family! Somehow we were always “busy”. Too busy to be involved in anything that could make friends. Anytime we started getting close to people we got pulled out of whatever activity we were involved in. The only thing we were allowed to do was play an instrument because my mom wanted us to all be musical. However, it was only private music lessons, my violin teacher wanted me to join orchestra and I got told we were “too busy” (again with what I don’t even know). We weren’t involved in co-op. After my older sister had a bad experience playing volleyball, we weren’t allowed to join sports. We joined American Heritage Girls until one of my younger sisters had a major disagreement with one of the other member families after which we were pulled from that also. My best friend was a my pen pal who lived across the state and I got to see maybe twice a year when we went to my grandparents’.
But with all of that, I look around and see people who had it so much worse than me. People who truly got next to no education, people who were severally abused in some form or other. When I look at that, I start thinking “it wasn’t so bad. Maybe I didn’t have friends but at least I can do basic math and read.” But then I remember that just because it was worse for others doesn’t mean my experience was all sunshine and rainbows. Everyday I get further and further away from the mindset my parents and siblings still all share.
My degree is in education. After going through college, the only reason I didn’t turn my mom in for educational neglect was because my parents were paying for my college and I knew if I did something drastic like that they for sure would cut me off. (Not a great excuse but what’s a broke former homeschooler supposed to do?) It’s funny, if you talk to my husband he’ll confirm when we first started dating I was all about that 6-8 kid homeschool family. Now I’m happy with the idea of 2 kids who go to public school lol.
Sorry for the rambling. It’s nice to find a place for people who have similar experiences as me. It’s nice to find people who understand where I’m coming from.

Hey, I'm looking to get started with some active bookshelf speakers and I'm mainly looking at the Triangle LN01A and Kanto YU6, because I've found deals for them at roughly ~$400 and they both seem solid. They look pretty comparable specs-wise so I'm not sure which one might be a better fit (or maybe it's neither?). Some context:
• This is for the living room of my house (about 300 sq ft). I'll use it mainly for music but I'll also connect them to a TV for movies occasionally. I have a turntable but I'm most interested in streaming
• The idea is to move whatever I purchase up to my office a while from now, when I have a better idea of how to configure a passive system in this space. The layout is a little odd and I'll have to position whatever I get on the sides of my fireplace. I'll also note that the mantle is crazy small at only 8.5" deep, so it looks like anything worth getting will have to be put on stands. So that's an additional expense here
• I will not be getting a sub right away but it's an option for the near future if it would really help
• My overall budget is ~$650

Hi! I'm a 24 years old Brazilian. I lived in Japan for 3 years. I'm helping a friend with the translation of a game from japanese to English.
We both have graduated from a vocational school majored in Interpretation. I remember vaguely that we weren't supposed to use Google translator or anything to use as a base of our translation. That kinda makes sense to me. Because Google Translator was pretty bad until some years ago. I graduated 2 years and a half ago and she graduated 1 year and a half ago.
So, I was checking her translation and noticed the expressions were a bit too simple or unnatural. I'm not an english native speaker. So, at first I tried to correct what I found that was wrong, but after that I asked ChatGPT to translate some of the paragraphs. I think that could be really useful to a translator. You don't need to copy and paste the whole translation, but you can compare your translation to chatgpt translation. I think that could be really useful and I'm not really sure people wouldn't use that.
However, I must say that Japanese and English are really different. Portuguese might be easier to translate to English. Because the format of the phrases are really similar. I don't know if in that case a program would be too useful.
Anyway, what are your takes on it? Do you use some app or site or anything to help you while translating? My bad if that sounds ignorant. I just wanna see people's point of view.

My “Mom” (38F) has NPD. In a few weeks We will be going to New York for my Brother’s Baseball Tournament. I told my “Mom” multiple times that while she will be there, I will be spending it with my dad. She was not happy about this. My dad has 100% custody but we occasionally visit my “Mom”s house. She told me I have to spend it with her because My dad is having another family stay with him. I told my “Mom” that It was okay and I would see her all the time expect for sleeping. She kept being rude and I was telling her that I would not let her control me anymore. She told me she didn’t want me sleeping and showering in a room with “4 Grown me”. 2 of these “men” were the 12 year olds playing in the baseball tournament, one of them being my literal biological brother! One of the 2 other grown me was my father! Like what!!!! The other man was my childhood best friends dad, lived down the block from me my entire life, has been to all my birthdays and Graduation, Let me stay the night whenever my parents were fighting, etc!!! This man would never hurt me. Also I am literally taller then him? I don’t know what my “Mom” is so worried about. She just kept talking and arguing on and on. Eventually she turned off my screen time leaving only camera and messages. This was my final straw. First, I am a autistic teenager and need my space. Also I did nothing wrong and only explained to her why I would not let her control me like I was a kid again. Lastly, Why did she turn off my apps for nothing! The only reason. She has control over my phone is I left it at her house when I went to a treatment program, It is literally my dads phone!! What I ended up doing was going to Find My IPhone and erasing it. Then I made a completely new account. I lost all my photos, contacts, everything. I had my dads phone number memorized thankfully but I still lost all my photos. I’m so tired of this constant fighting against the person who is supposed to love me. I’m done

Hello, I want to try not to sound privileged in this post, but this issue has been causing me some personal turmoil, and I would love to hear some advice from people more mature than me. For some background: I am 25 and have been out of college for two years. I majored in Environmental Studies and Anthropology. Since high school, I was always interested in studying culture, philosophy and how it all relates to the environment. All in all, I wasn't seriously considering my career options at the time. Just pursued classes that sounded interesting and, in all honesty, avoided really hard classes like bio and math. During my last year, however, I rediscovered my childhood passion for animals after volunteering at an animal sanctuary and discovering bird watching. Since then, I have worked some Environmental Technician jobs that allowed me to be outside and survey animals. But since I've been living on my own as an adult, reality has gut checked me pretty hard. The jobs don't pay well; most permanent ones are for consulting companies doing surveys to continue construction, not for conservation. I could have stayed and maybe got enough experience to one day work for the government in a non-seasonal capacity, but without a bachelor's and master's in hard science, these chances are very slim. Not the mention the debt I would have in a low-paying field to go back to undergrad. This factor and seeing how everything keeps getting more expensive spurred me to apply and get accepted into a graduate program in Urban and Environmental Planning. I was excited and fairly certain about my choice at the time, but now I'm just afraid that I've sacrificed the happiness of working outside and with animals with more financial stability (not like I'll be rich) and a job that follows my undergrad study more closely. I don't think a career in planning will make me as happy professionally, but I'm also trying to examine the other tradeoffs, like creating a more stable family when I start one, affording good food and housing, etc. Ultimately I'm just two months away from starting this grad program, and I'm self-sabotaging like crazy, partly telling myself that I'm selling out and choosing a more boring job. In response to this, I know I can still make time to volunteer and get outside and my future career will still hopefully be helping people and the environment. Sorry for how long and specific this is, but if anyone has struggled or is struggling through a similar situation of balancing financial stability with their passion, please let me know of any tips to get through it because it feels brutal!

Generally in the Solar Punk communities consumption, or rather excessive consumption, is seen as immoral due to the impacts this causes on the environment and societies we live in. Is the only tie to excessive consumptions immorality based on the impacts it causes on the environment (i.e. climate change, deforestation, etc.) and society (oppression via capatilism to produce cheap consumer goods, industrial meat production, etc.), or are there other arguments out there that pit excessive consumption as inherently wrong despite any effects, or lack thereof, on the environment/society?
If the immorality of excessive consumption is inherently tied to its effects on our world, it would seem to follow that one could build a consumer society with technology/systems that nullified these impacts and be morally in the green. But that's never the vision put forward by the Solar Punk communities. So I'm curious if there's a thought process/ideology or impact I'm missing here.
Additionally, it's important to have a definition of "excessive consumption." Diogenes once threw away a wooden bowl, his only earthly possession at the time aside from the clay pot he lived in and the clothes on his back, because he witnessed a young boy scooping water from a stream and, in that instance, Diogenes realized how materialistic he had become. I'd venture a guess that most in this chat wouldn't take the definition that far. So as one who is struggling to learn how to live off lentils to not be subservient to the masters of society, where to draw that line is something I am still learning and trying to determine for myself. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'm (F20), my older sister is 24. We are four years apart from each other. Growing up, we were close, but as I've grown up, we've sort of became a little distant, and I've started to see her worst qualities over time (irresponsible with money, locks herself out of the apartment sometimes, won't EVER do the dishes her damn self, eats up all the food in the house two seconds after it was bought, spends her day surfing bad communities she says she hates but engages in anyway)...you get the gist.
She never went to college. And that's cool. People don't have to go to college. In fact, sometimes I wish I just went to community college and began my life from there. But her issue is, from 18 to 24, she not only stayed out of school, but refused to hold a job. She pretty much bummed off my parents for a good junk of her adult life. And as a result, she can't really do anything for herself. Did I mention she doesn't even have a license or have plans to take care of herself or move out?
Sometime ago, my parents got mad at her for being a freeloader and taking advantage of them. I defended her because, hey, even though were a little distant, she's still my sister. I proudly said, back then, that I'd let her live with me if they thought about kicking her out. That was before I saw the light.Now after seeing how she's throwing her life away and pretty much regressing into a dependent child who depends on others to take care of her, I don't think I can stomach spending the first few years of my adult life cleaning up after her.
In the fall of last year, my mother heard of me wanting to move out after college, and she was like "Oh, you should take your older sister with you", as if she wanted to remove the burden from her house and put her in my house instead. I said no, I don't think that would be a good idea. She's irresponsible, won't do anything without anyone telling her to do it, I already know she's HORRIBLE with her money, lazy, and has a list of phobias that would prevent me from actually doing the things I want, like getting pets or even protecting myself with a firearm (She can't handle dangerous weapons or being around them). My mom got upset with me and tried to guilt me. "But you guys were so close, why don't you want to have her in the house???" But I put my foot down and told her to fuck off, in a polite, respect your parents way. IE, I said, "Let's just stop talking about this".
Anyway, I'm gonna be graduating soon. My sister is still stuck in her ways and I'm not interested in being her secondary parent to "push her" to do what she's supposed to do. I've done it before and she either regressed backwards or she straight up ignored me and went back to old habits. I'm not interested in living with her or being near her for a while since most of my life has been with her. I need some time to breathe and be on my own. Not stay around cleaning up after her.
But, I thought about what my mom said. She hasn't asked me to let my sister move in in a while. But I'm sincerely worried it might come back up again. And I don't know how to tell her politely that I don't trust her to live with me enough right now and that I think we need to be apart. Because I don't want my sister to blow up and accuse me of hating her, and I don't want my parents to guilt me and make me feel bad for not wanting her around me right now.
Maybe if she shows more responsibility, I'll reconsider, but as it stands now, I can't even fathom her living with me.Would I be the asshole if I told my parents I didn't want her to live with me? I need other people's opinions on what to do.
