Can this work for creating a wireframe look?

2023.06.08 20:59 Epistemophilliac Can this work for creating a wireframe look?

I'd like to make simple wireframe graphics, and approaches I saw so far don't work. To see example of wireframe graphics I'd like to achieve, look up the original Elite . Approaches that I saw make wireframes that are see through, so you see lines that are at the back of the model. One approach people say should work is shader with barymetric coordinates, which I think were only added with godot 4. One more approach that maybe could work is some people mention exporting in Blender the model with "wireframe modifier". However, I don't have Blender, and kinda don't want to download it just for this feature. So, here's my idea:
Could I paint the texture of the object black except for near the edges? In this way, you will see only thick lines where the edges of the model are. However, trying to paint textures this way result in very jagged or distorted sides of the model, like you glued to it a bunch of pixelated pictures. I'm using Blockbench to edit textures and UVs. https://i.redd.it/cuv7q65fdu4b1.png How can I fix this? And how can I do this programmatically in Godot having only the model? Is there a way to paint textures in engine such that they hug only the edges, and are straight, and all have equal widths, visually?
EDIT: I wrote all that, and got a wonderful idea, and it worked. Now I'll describe how to achieve the wireframe look that I wanted.
First, here's the code that I got from the internet (and I don't quite understand well enough because I'm new to 3d graphics)
func make_wire(): var mesh_node = get_node("MeshInstance") var mesh_mat = mesh_node.get_surface_material(0) var array = mesh_node.mesh.surface_get_arrays(0) mesh_node.mesh = ArrayMesh.new() mesh_node.mesh.add_surface_from_arrays(Mesh.PRIMITIVE_LINES, array) mesh_node.set_surface_material(0, mesh_mat)
This achieves the see-through wireframe effect for MeshInstance. You have to call it once in _ready(). However, you then see the back of the model as I said. The solution is simple: put a smaller copy of the same MeshInstance inside the MeshInstance! Scale it down to be 0.99 of the original, and color it black (or whatever color is the background, like in Elite Frontier 2 it's light blue I think). Examples of how it looks: https://i.redd.it/eq4p8vwshu4b1.png https://i.redd.it/3u937ffzhu4b1.png

2023.06.08 20:39 COKEWHITESOLES Interview for new Field Technician position. Vertical pay but sideways move?

So I currently work for [Globe] ISP as a field technician and I am looking to transition into more MSP to SysAdmin work.
I have been in my current position for 1 year and currently am at $25/hr with a raise to $27 incoming next week. I commute about an hour both ways and being on installs, time can run over with unforeseen circumstances.
Now I have been looking for other work as I originally stated after one year I would start to leverage the small experience that I have, along with some certifications. I asked on this sub when I started the position and I am trying to go deeper into networking. My dream job is to do something mixed with both VLAN/Cloud software and banking, but that is many years off. So I have done A+ and am almost finished with CCNA and have learned much from what I’ve studied so far.
So a recruiter reached out to me and offered me a job for Field Tech IV, starting at $32/hr (well $28-$32, but I want the biggest number) and it’s local, about 20 minutes. The description is about hybrid/on-site install and configuration at PSAPs? The recruiter told me I’d start everyday at home but would have to go to different sites, with IRS comp for mileage. Do I need a truck or something? He did include that I would be working with Cisco routers and switches which is a good XP boost as my current position doesn’t provide as often as I’d like. Also Linux OS work also.
Has anyone done anything like this? What kind of workload am I looking at?

A tearful reunion
You can't miss Amos Parker. He is well over six feet tall. Some say closer to seven. Many say he was the tallest soldier in the American army during the Revolutionary War.

This week, the now 63-year-old Parker enters Shepard's Hotel on Bagg's Square in Utica (really the Bagg's Hotel, but the name was changed while Abraham Shepard owned it from 1825 to 1828). Parker is determined to meet the hotel's distinguished guest, the Marquis de Lafayette.

In 1777, while the Revolutionary War was raging, the then 19-year-old, tall, red-haired Lafayette left his home in France and joined the American army in its fight to win for the American colonies their independence from Great Britain. He fought in many battles and, in 1781, commanded troops in Yorktown, Virginia, when British Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army to Gen. George Washington, just about ensuring an end to the war and an American victory.

On the night of January 30, 1948, Utica firefighters fought one of the most spectacular fires in the city’s history. Flames roared through “The Long Block” on the west side of Lower Genesee Street, between Oriskany and Whitesboro streets. The 3-alarm blaze was fought in temperatures 30 below zero. Seventeen firefighters were injured and 11 businesses damaged. Losses were estimated at $400,000.
Now, 44 years later, the 68-year-old Lafayette is back in America, touring the country as a guest of its grateful citizens. This week, after visits in Rome, Oriskany and Whitesboro, he enters Utica triumphantly via the Rome Road (today Lafayette Street). After a big celebration, he is in his hotel room, resting before continuing his journey east.

Suddenly, there is a knock on the door and in walks the very tall Amos Parker. At first, Lafayette is puzzled, but then Parker begins to relate an incident that occurred at the Battle of Yorktown.

As the fighting there raged, Lafayette ordered 25 of his men — including Parker — to remove a fence so that Lafayette could lead his soldiers through the breach. "Once you remove the fence," Lafayette shouted, "allow me and my men to ride through the opening. Do not fire your weapons!"

More:Later known for illustrations, Saturday Globe began without: Mohawk Valley history

The fence was removed and Lafayette and his men began to ride through. Suddenly, Parker spotted a British sniper aiming his rifle at Lafayette. Before the sniper could fire, though, Parker raised his musket and shot him.

Unbelievingly, an aide to Lafayette had Parker court-martialed for disobeying Lafayette's "don't fire your weapon" order. He, of course, was acquitted when it was learned that by disobeying the order, he had saved Lafayette's life.

Now, in a hotel room 44 years later, Parker and Lafayette relive the incident. They embrace and (a historian later wrote) enjoy "a heart-tugging event and weep" in each other's arms. (After the war, Parker settled in the town of Augusta in southwestern Oneida County and died there in 1842 at age 80. He was buried at the Parker (Augusta) Cemetery at the intersection of Augusta-Solsville Road and Anderson Road. A blue and yellow state marker there reads: AMOS PARKER, TALLEST MAN IN AMERICAN ARMY. SAVED GEN. LAFAYETTE'S LIFE. PRESENT AT THE SURRENDER OF CORNWALLIS. BURIED HERE.

Record at UFA
A class of 210 students receive diplomas at Utica Free Academy (UFA), the largest class ever graduated in the school's more than 100-year history. The Right Reverend Charles Fiske, bishop coadjutor of the Central New York Episcopal Diocese, addresses the students: "Why has the city of Utica paid for your education? … It expects to receive from you a return for its investment. You owe the community repayment for this debt. Not in money, but in service. You are expected to exercise a high standard of living, put forth an honest effort to make your neighborhood a better place to live and accept public calls of duty to serve your community with its charities and efforts to improve the public well-being."

Morrisville celebrates
The village of Morrisville celebrates its 150th anniversary. It was incorporated in 1848 and named for its founder, Thomas Morris. He settled in the area in 1797 and built a house on the corner of today's Main and Cedar streets. His father, Robert, was a Founding Father from Pennsylvania, who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Civita M. Allard, a registered nurse and an associate professor in the Health Services Department at Mohawk Valley Community College, receives the college's "alumna of merit" award.

In American Legion baseball, Utica Post defeats Parkhurst Post, 13 to 3, behind the pitching of Chris Donalty (a four hitter) and the hitting of Eric Miller (3 hits, 2 RBIs). Meanwhile, Whitestown beats Lee, 6 to 4, behind the hitting of Jason Englehart, Mike Antanavige, Bernie Martin, Brent Wengert and Matt Maine. Steve Rice has two hits for Lee.

The Genetaska Club of New Hartford elects Ellen Boerger as its president. Other officers include: Peg Mullin, vice president; Barbara Reinshagen, recording secretary; Sue Maher, corresponding secretary; Joyce Ebensperger, treasurer; and directors Joyce Goggin, Ada Ruhm, Ellie Lampert and Barbara Weaver.

Pro hockey returns
Utica, after many years without a professional hockey team, has one again. The Utica Comets are in the American Hockey League, a minor league affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League. They will play in the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Robert Esche, a former goalie in the National Hockey League and president of the Mohawk Valley Garden, will operate the team. Mayor Robert Palmieri says the move fits in with his vision for a revitalized Bagg's Square and Harbor Point development. "What a great day for the city!" he says. "The emotion is overwhelming."

The Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame inducts Stan "Buddy" Evans, longtime baseball coach at Rome Free Academy and college football official; Bill Holowaty, originally from Mohawk, longtime baseball coach at Eastern Connecticut State University; Ed Wadas, a "super" supporter of local athletics and called the "candy man" for giving out candy at local games, especially in Whitesboro, Oriskany and New York Mills; and Tom Wells, multi-sport coach at New Hartford schools, especially known for his highly successful swim teams.

Bobbi Jo Kahl is approved by the town board in Remsen as as the town justice.

In American Legion baseball, Roberts Post defeats Whitestown, 3 to 1. Nate Palmer, a senior at Holland Patent High, strikes out 18 and gets the win. He is supported by the hitting of Kinsey Williams, Nico Ramos and Austin Mann. Whitestown's Jared Muraca pitches well, allowing only five hits.

Trivia quiz
Next Sunday is Father's Day. Let's celebrate with a tough question. Name the man who was the son of a U.S. president and also the father of a U.S. president. If you can't name him, at least name the two presidents. (Answer will appear here next week.)

Answer to last week's question: Richard Nixon was president when, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin first walked on the surface of the moon after landing in the Apollo 11 lunar module.

2023.06.08 19:48 5conmeo Download Speed

My Frontier fiber internet was installed at my house last week with the 2Gig internet plan. I have my own Eero Pro 6E connect with Frontier XGS-PON ONT, model FRX523. I ran some speed tests from Speedtest app on my devices.
Iphone: Down: 378 Up: 251
Macbook Pro (wifi): Down: 1251 Up 427 (wifi), Ethernet cable connect: Down: 946, Up: 942
Mac Mini: Down: 1186 Up 1267 (wifi) and Ethernet cable connect: down 942 Up: 941
I notice that the speed from ethernet cable is slower than wifi.
I have some questions: Why download speed from ethernet cable is more slower than wifi? I assume the speed from cable should be faster than wifi because it connects directly from router to the device.
My second question: I have 2gig plan, but why i have around 1200 Mbps download which is a lot slower than 2Gig.
Can you please help. I don't understand it.
Thank you.

2023.06.08 17:58 sebivc State of the game: A casual players perspective.

DISCLAIMER: criticism is healthy for the development of a game. We as a community have the responsability of giving feedback to the devs about what is being done for the good of the game. I am a casual player, so everything i refer to in this post will be based on MY experience, which in most sections will be relatable to most of the playerbase in every stage of the game.
As we are all well aware of, there is a mild discontent from the community towards the development and decision-making of The Cycle Frontier. Multiple post have been made regarding the state of the game and multiple well-known parters have been uploading videos with their opinions and solutions to existing problems, which i'll link at the end of this paragraph. I am not experienced enough nor capable of suggesting solutions, so i'll talk exclusively based on experience.
Spoon (english): (he has also uploaded multiple videos giving feedback and complaints about issues)
https://youtu.be/1A1w5wO9FGA
TheSima0 (spanish): (he has also uploaded multiple videos giving feedback and complaints about issues)
https://youtu.be/Qh2orgoQJz0
SomeKindaDog and Minda999:
(They did not upload any complete feedback video that i can recall, but have been uploading complaints in multiple videos)
There might be more, but those are the ones that came to mind at the time this post was created. Besides that, lots of other content creators gave up on the game already.
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
MOVEMENT:
I think that the vast mayority of players will agree with me on this one. The introduction of inertia was not well received by most, as it turned an already highly rat populated Genre (Looter Shooter) into a rat hole. This, combined with the new map and poor weapon balancing made a perfect cocktail for ratiness, which is unfun to most of us.
Weapon innacuracy while jumping was another reason for the Boom in the ratting playstyle, as it made a fast paced PvP just not viable. Shooting is not the only skill in games. Movement is key to further dominate a game and play it to its fullest. Also, shooting while strafe jumping is not exactly easy, which allowed for a higher skill ceiling. You had to be able to not only shoot while jumping, but also to be able to move in a way that you could make your enemy miss his shots.
MOBS:
Again, most will agree that the inability of sneaking past creatures and having a permanent PvEvP situation is frustrating. Mobs were ok before, the agro change seemed unnecesary to me (and to most as it seems).
The following is a personal opinion, but the Jeff rework did not feel well. Jeff used to be a menacing creature that, without the right weapon, was pretty hard to kill. It made the shattergun pretty popular (and also because weapon accuracy while jumping was a thing back then) in the times that focus crystal farming was viable, which makes sense because high reward should always be attached to high risk. Right now, Jeff can be easily killed with a white pdw, which removes the fear that it used to cause. My friend and i were absolutely TERRIFIED of Jeff back then, but now we just stand still and jump and we'll kill it easily with any weapon.
The Howler is a cool adition to the game, but it should have a special place (like the Crusher near Oasis has) instead of randomly roaming around terrorizing every player and ruining every PvP encounter near it. Maybe a Hive-like Dungeon, but that's for the developers to decide.
WEAPONS AND ARMOR:
There is no denying that weapons and armor need to be reworked in some way. 1, 2 o 3 bullets difference don't mean anything when the TTK (time to kill) is as low as it is now. 1 bullet difference on a gun that shoots at a 0.07 fire rate is just not enough to justify spending on better gear. Again, this comes from a casual player who doesn't usually go past blue armor, but i can't help feeling bad for the purple and exotic players i managed to kill with just white/green weapons. I agree that lower geared players should have a chance, but better geared players SHOULD have an advantage over people like me, that mosty use lower tier weapons and gear. If not, why bother spending so much if it's not going to give you an advantage.
Weapon innacuracy while jumping was already addressed in the "MOVEMENT" section.
HEADQUARTERS:
As a casual player, this one is a tricky one. What could look good to me might look bad to other more extreme players, but as said before, i'll base this on MY experience.
Headquarter upgrades are way too expensive for what they offer when a certain point is reached, to the point in which even streamers don't bother doing them.
More variety is needed. An upgrade for discounts for faction purchases and one for reduced time/cost of crafting gear are some ideas that come to mind but, as i said before, i'm just a casual player giving my opinion.
CONCLUSION:
Devs, i know you must have an idea of what direction you want to take your game, but don't forget to listen to your community. After all, this is a business. If the community is happy, more players will play. If the community is sad/angry/disappointed the game will die. This game was never supposed to be tarkov. We chose to play The Cycle Frontier because it was something else, different and unique. If we wanted Tarkov, we would play that. I own both games and decided to play this game but each season that goes by looks more and more like Tarkov. Just remember, we do not owe you, or anyone, anything. As much as i love and defended this game since Close Beta 1, it's reaching a point where it's just not fun anymore. My friends just don't want to keep playing, and neither do i to be honest. I don't want this game to die, i fell in love with the potential it has. I just hope you choose to listen to us and do whats right for the good of the game.
Best regards, generic casual player.

2023.06.08 15:40 rainbow--penguin [SF] Chapter 55 - Returning Home

As enjoyable as the more relaxed journey had been, eventually it had to come to an end. After a week of meandering through the countryside and small villages, Madeline, Billie, and Lena were approaching their final destination — the city where it had all begun for Madeline, and where it would likely end too.
But they still had a couple of days before they reconvened with the others taking part in the attempted rescue mission, and Madeline had a couple more stops she wanted to make.
First, she insisted on stopping by the house she’d been meant to meet Liam at all those months ago, just in case. But her message and the supplies she’d left for him were still untouched.
The sight of the food and water bottled gathering dust sent a wave of grief through her. It clutched at her chest, making her heart feel as if it was trying to climb up her throat. Part of her was grateful that Billie and Lena had to wait a safe distance away to avoid detection by the Poiloogs. It meant there was no one to see the trembling limbs and the tears pricking at her eyes. But it also meant there was no one to slip a hand into hers or clasp her in a tight embrace. No one to fill the emptiness left behind by that wave of grief.
Still, there was hope. Until she’d tried everything — until they’d enacted this rescue mission — she couldn’t give up.
With a deep breath, Madeline wiped away the tears and reached for her walkie-talkie to let her friends know she was ready to move on.
Then began the journey across the city to the library. Her library.
Lena and Billie were both very understanding of her whims. They didn’t even question it, which Madeline was grateful for, having no real reason or logical explanation as to why it was necessary. It just was.
The walk was less pleasant than it had been in the countryside. Towering buildings and concrete and debris replaced rolling hills and trees and crystal blue lakes. Of course, there was still some greenery. Wildflowers wormed their way through gaps in the paving slabs. Ivy crept over buildings. Weeds sprung up from every nook and crevice. Nature always found a way. Perhaps one day, it would reclaim the cities entirely, and all traces of humanity would be wiped from the globe.
But humans were persistent too.
Thankfully, the Poiloog activity had diminished since the last time Madeline had been here. They only had to duck out of sight once on their journey, meaning they made good time.
When Madeline saw the towering shape of her library on the horizon, it set her stomach fluttering and churning and twisting. It was as if all the homesickness she’d pushed down and ignored came flooding in all at once now that she was back. Her chest constricted and swelled, her heart stuttering and squeezing and soaring, not knowing how to react to the flood of emotion.
For the second time that day, she wished that someone was there to comfort her. She imagined pouring her heart out to Lena, or collapsing into Billie’s arms and sobbing out her feelings.
But that wasn’t an option. No congregating before a night’s sleep. The precautions were even more important now that they were here.
So she stood alone, staring at her home of so many years, the home she’d shared with Liam for those few short months. Swallowing hard, she fought back the lump rising in her throat and forced her trembling legs to keep moving. One foot in front of the other.
When they finally reached the library, Lena and Billie fanned out to keep watch at either side of it while Madeline slipped around the back. The motion of climbing the garden wall was still in her muscles. Her toes knew exactly the spots to dig into without even thinking about it, and she’d soon hauled herself up.
The garden was just as she remembered it — an overgrown and unruly mess. A quick kick revealed that the water butt was completely full. That was good. She’d missed not having to worry too much about where her next drink would come from.
When she was done glancing around at the familiar grimy benches and flowerbeds, she crept through the back door. Or the space where the back door used to be, anyway. A Poiloog had torn through it the day she’d fled this place with Liam. Perhaps, one day, she’d be able to return to repair it.
Wood splinters creaked and crunched underfoot as she walked along the corridor, deeper into darkness. But she didn’t need to see to know where she was going here. She knew every corner of this building like it was a part of her.
Carrying on, she came out into the light spilling in from the long, tall windows lining the main hall. The smell of the dust and the paper — the smell of home — tickled her nostrils, bringing the lump in her throat ever higher, but she choked it back. Ignoring the stinging in her eyes as best she could, she looked around at the orderly stacks of shelves. All apart from one section near the middle where a bookcase had been pushed into another, sending books tumbling to the ground. Another thing to fix if she ever had the time.
Her vision started to blur as she remembered that moment, how Liam had come back for her despite telling him to run. How he’d saved her with his quick thinking. She hurriedly reached up to wipe away the tears and continued walking.
Aside from the missing bodies of the Poiloogs they’d killed, now simply purple bloodstains on the floor, everything was just as she’d left it. When she was satisfied it was safe, she returned to her old bedroom in one of the offices and slumped onto the mattress on the floor. Then, finally, she stopped trying to choke it all back.
She let the lump in her throat rise while the sting of tears in her eyes overflowed into a flood. Clutching her knees to her chest she sobbed out her feelings until there was nothing left. Her heart ached. Her throat ached. Her head ached. Her eyes ached. Every inch of her hurt, physical and emotional pain blending into one maelstrom that threatened to consume her entirely. But she knew it would pass. It had to. She had a job to do.
When the sobs finally subsided, with no more tears left to cry, she reached out with trembling hands to wipe her face clean, calmly doing her best to make herself presentable before reaching for her walkie-talkie.
She pressed the button on the side. “Okay,” she said, voice strained and gravelly. “It’s all clear in here. I… I think this would be a good place to stay for the night if that’s okay with you?”
“Of course!” Lena’s reply came almost instantly.
“Yeah,” Billie said, a little more slowly. “If you’re sure that’s what you want, Mads.”
Madeline looked around the familiar room. She looked at the bucket she’d used to wash every morning; the patterned throw she’d found on one of the sofas to use as a blanket, so soft to the touch; the piles of books she’d finished sorted according to interest, genre, and heft. Then, her gaze fell on a smaller pile — recommendations for Liam.
She lifted the walkie-talkie to her lips. “Yeah. I’m sure… It’s good to be home.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was odd inviting Lena and Billie into her sanctuary, just as it had been when she’d brought Liam here all those months ago. But what made it even odder was that she wasn’t there with them as they came inside. She stayed tucked away in her bedroom while they each went off to separate meeting rooms or study rooms to make their bed for the night. Madeline did her best to direct them to the comfiest sofas via radio, while also steering them clear of Liam’s room. That was out of bounds. She had to keep it just as it was for if — when she got him back.
Once everyone was settled and suitably far away, Madeline wasn’t ready to be alone with her thoughts quite yet. She clung to the walkie-talkie like it was her last lifeline, drawing strength from her friends.
Thankfully, Lena and Bille were only too happy to keep talking too.
“I can’t believe you lived here!” Lena said, for possibly the hundredth time. “Didn’t you find it spooky, having all of this old building to yourself?”
Madeline shrugged to herself. “I always found it comforting. All that extra space was an additional barrier between me and the chaos outside.”
“I can see it,” Billie said. “It’s well situated for supply runs. Sturdy walls. Plenty of books to keep you occupied. And a good amount of space so you can keep in shape without setting foot outside.”
“Of course, you’d think of that,” Lena scoffed.
“But seriously, Mads,” they continued. “Thanks for bringing us here. It’s nice getting a glimpse of your life before we met. And I really can see you living here, all snuggled up in your fortress with your books. You’re a smart woman. I’d never have thought to come somewhere like here.”
“Thanks,” Madeline said. “It was a good life. As good as can be expected, anyway. Especially once… once it wasn’t just me.” The conversation trailed off for a moment.
Madeline wondered if the others were thinking about those they’d lost along the way. Billie had their brother Joe. But what about Lena? She assumed the medic had someone she was hoping to rescue too, but it felt rude to ask outright.
“It’s nice to get a better look at the place,” Billie said, suddenly breaking the silence. “Last time I was here there was this crazy lady attacking me so it was very difficult to look around.”
The tears clinging to Madeline’s eyes spilt over as a bark of laughter bubbled up. Trust Billie to steer the conversation back to less maudlin topics. She sniffed hard before replying. “That’s what happens when you break into somebody’s home.”
“Is it? I’ll have to take note of that for future.”
As the conversation continued, the patch of sky in Madeline’s window gained tinges of pink and orange before fading to the greyish purple of twilight. Still clutching the walkie-talkie in her hand, Madeline shifted slightly, laying back. The mattress she was sitting on scooted across the floor under her, making her heart jolt. That was something she hadn’t missed.

Author's Note: Next chapter to be posted 15th June (hopefully). This is an ongoing project so I welcome any feedback you might have.

2023.06.08 15:27 DandelionOpus Against the Day Pt 1 - Thoughts and notes of a first reading for discussion.

Hi Folks,
I have started Against the Day at long last. Coming from a Pynchon hiatus since reading Inherent Vice a few years ago, along with many aborted attempts at Mason and Dixon and Vineland here and there. I just realised, to some existential dread, that it has been 8 years since I read Gravity’s Rainbow. Being 18 and trying to seem smart I pushed myself through it having no clue how to parse it and looking on equations that, at most, looked cool. I can’t remember much of the bizarre experience except for Rocketman, kink dungeons and Byron the Bulb, but it spurred on that Pynchon obsession. Now, instead of reading for a dissertation, I seemed to be absorbed now into Against the Day in a way I haven’t with Pynchon’s works before. Having just finished Part 1 and written copious notes, I feel compelled to write an essay, out of term-time, drawing together some of the themes as I see them so far. If it sparks off any thoughts, I would love the discussion.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Light
One obvious key theme is that of light; how it works, its properties, its power for illumination and occlusion. From the epigraph, it seems to point to the night, darkness, the absence of light as the base state. In this, light illuminates the day, almost creating it. This immediately gives a view to the most intuitive aspect that the light symbolises in its guidance, guiding Merle and Dally down the roads and towards the Horizon, lighting the way of the Chums to the centre of the White City.
But what comes to the fore for me is how light is portrayed in its more complex aspects. Light, as a fundamental part of reality, and how we perceive it, is as much subject to control and shaping, lighting the way to a spectacle and the ‘truth’. Just as light guides the way of some down a certain road to their destiny, so too does it guides the ways down the rationalised grids of Chicago to the killing floors. In the explorations of the World’s Fair, an exhibition of the virtues of American progress and technology, the light illuminates the ‘White City’ at its centre, obscuring those who dwell in its margins and those left in its wake after its dismantled. The light at its centre illuminates a central constructed truth and narrative that excludes some as much as it guides others. This truth, like light, is similarly subject to shaping with Vibe wanting to undermine the progress promised at the fair, of the free electrical network, in its impact on the ‘world’ or the economy, that gives him his prestige and power. This exhortation of progress and technology, and the narrative of the power of America, the West and Capitalism it represents is the façade of a unified whole; a cohesive truth otherwise fractured within modernity.
This underlying fracturing of modernity points to the anxieties of the Aetherists. The want for light, as a fundamental aspect of reality, to be situated in a continuous whole is a want for that precarious comfort. For it to be discrete, fractured quanta, like all modern identities, selves and truths evokes a malaise seen once the Michelson-Morley experiment is done. This belief, in light and the unified stable truth is reflected in the religious devotion and fanaticism about the powers of light. Like the believers in the currents of the time, in the truth of progress and capitalism, the belief in the light gives them an uncritical view, unable to see past the façade. The experiment looks at another reality, past the spectacle they crave, risking to plunge light itself into fragments.
The power of light in constructing the truth is mirrored in how this truth is controlled and enforced. With references to the light of surveillance and the shining of light on things. As the Chums shine a light on Merle and Chevrolette’s ‘deviance’ they are forced back into the woods and shadows before coming back into the day done up and respectable. The Chums moving through the Fair move towards its central illuminated ‘safety’, its policed boundaries and shaped centre, away from the darker edges inhabited by those excluded and marginalised by its truth. To be able to construct the truth and enforce it through light gives further impetus to control light itself. The Aetherists posit that light is a finite resource that must be captured by nations as if like water rights. Vibe similarly looks to undermine technologies that may provide light and electricity to the masses for free, enforcing scarcity.
There are moments with Merle and Webb where other aspects of the light come to the fore. Its other control strategies, and its potential to assert other truths. In Merle’s case, in his interest in alchemy and photography, he mentions the power to redeem light from metals and photographs. In metals, specifically silver, Merle points to the imperatives that he receives, evoking the light of currency, as fictions in embodying a measure of exchange value that provides imperatives for Merle and Dally’s constant moving from job to job. In photography, the capture of light and life into captured moments evokes some notion of the capturing of the day; the day, otherwise, capturing the moments of many millions into its control. But at the same time, there are other potentials and possibilities. In Merle’s risqué photography undertaken with Chevrolette, there are moments to capture life outside of the ‘light’, deviating from the respectable truth of the day. With metals, there is recognition of how to transform their light as money into light as explosive. This then ties to Webb Traverse. In recognising the power of light brought by explosions and its power to break through the occlusion of the domination of the Capitalist ruling-class. This however is similarly accompanied with a certain obsession and belief, an obsession with the smell of dynamite and the belief in the religious justifications given by Rev Moss Gatlin. As well, the intentional use of explosions by owners are used to justify reprisals on the workers and unions as the ‘Beasts that Did This’. The light of explosions can similarly be used and shaped by the powers that be to further their truth, narratives and power. Does this already point to the issues of the political terrorism pursued by Webb and Gatlin? Will their want to use the light be a dead end? It will not guide them to a promised future but will instead be coopted and used against them. Is the real potential for countermovement to be found in the shadows? On the new frontier?
Frontiers
In many ways frontiers represent the possibilities of new worlds, new ways of doing things. This is mythologised in the Old West and expansion of America that, however, ignores its accompaniment of extreme violence and exploitation as new possibilities were consolidated into the way of things. By the time of the late 19th century this frontier no longer remains. Vanderjuice points to a frontier you could find, stand on looking both east and west. But with the consolidation of American Capitalism, where once wild bison roamed the plains, now cattle and humans are heralded down lit rationalised grids to be killed and used, their deaths fodder to tourists of progress and the light. With the frontier lost, the light bends back on what is consolidated – in killing the animals and humans once free. Franz Ferdinand in not having buffalo to hunt settles for genocidal intentions towards Hungarians. Colonialism and imperialism come home to roost later in the 20th century.
But then, there feels like nods to the new frontier, the shadows. In the shadows of the Worlds Fair, there are those who are marginalised and ignored. In this, new frontiers remain. Places outside of the control, the system and the light-truth. Some want to shine light on this space, to extend the control over the anarchists amassing in darkened halls. At the same time, Vibe seeks to control the technologies that will extend that, and so potentially allowing those frontiers to remain, potentials of new worlds to be worked out. ‘It is always night, otherwise we wouldn’t need light’ – not an anxiety, but a fundamental base state. Realities are occluded by the light shaping a narrative and the day, the spirit of the times. In the darkness are possibilities, potentials for a new world that are repressed and ignored. Other truths and alternate realities can be asserted; the truths of the exploitation of workers and ethnic minorities, the ruthlessness of capitalism and the bourgeois lies of liberty and equality.
It is also seen that those is pursue the light actively seem less able to see these shadows. They pursue the truth constructed and enforced and are unable to see through them in hope for cohesive truths, largely given by those with power to define the message and narrative. This narrative is to be illuminated at the Worlds Fair, a spectacle of light that heralds progress and a future already written for us. This façade gives hope to some, like Dally – glittering lights guiding the way to her mother. But reality is seen in the drift of exiles over the plains, like them. And those left behind to dismantle its edifice. Some characters on the borders of these states. Webb poking holes in the lies of freedom as he toils in dark mines but drawn to the light of explosions masking perhaps what could be gained from the shadows. Kit, is taught by his father, but is drawn to the light of electricity, the light of a life as one of Doc Tesla’s boys, so much that he accepts the funding of Scarsdale Vibe and his promise of the future. But in the shadows, a new frontier is found, holding possibilities of new worlds being lived by marginalised working people, toiling in dark mines, and cleaning up after the temporary exhortation of modern progress and technology is dismantled and burned. If the White City is an edifice of white capitalist American hegemony, it shows how fractured modernity always requires suturing into some truth that can be controlled. The light of its centre attempts to do so, but it cannot cover everywhere and can never be given out for free, it will always create those frontiers and margins where its light cannot shine on and unroot. Where other truths may be understood and asserted.
The Chums of Chance
But as the Chums stand on the volcanic island they are sent to, the light of the day is so bright that it blinds them, as if in the heart of diamond. The light is concentrated to the point it occludes their vision. In looking at the Chums, it makes sense that they represent this focal point. As ideal representations illuminated in books, they are concentrated fictions of this light and truth. Even with the political and personal insubordination of Darby and Chick, they cannot see outside of it truly.
From the first moment with the Chums, in their place as characters in an adventure book series, they provide a fiction representing the ideal of the American boy at the turn of the century, and perhaps a wider ideal required to uphold this status quo. Within their group, Lindsay reinforces norm of good dress, language, patriotism, and education, looking down on the ‘undesirables’; gamblers, the badly raised. Gesturing to the valorisation of an upper-middle class boys ideal, they position themselves in opposition to the ‘evil’ anarchistic working classes. In their bemusement at those in the margins of the worlds fair, and of those from other countries, they exhibit this superiority and wider American exceptionalism and nationalism. In this however, they are not just embodiments of these ideals and values but actively reinforce them internally through their strict hierarchy and enforce them outwardly. As the big eye that descends from the sky to catch Merle and Chevrolette in their deviance from the respectable norms of society, in their surveillance of the Worlds Fair with the White City Investigations and their work with the interior ministry of Mexico against its subversives, they help construct and uphold the truth as epitomised in the White City; the dazzling light they are at the centre of. In helping states and private detectives enlisted by oligarchs, under orders from a shadowy organisation above them, or the author of their stories. These orders are then carried out through the logistical services manned by countless voiceless labourers quietly seen filing in and out with the instruments used to measure Tesla’s experiments.
As the Wiki points to, one point that is fascinating is the Chums malaise and depression in between their adventures, or ‘in between their books’. In between their orders and adventures, they fall into alcoholism in dingy rooms, almost rapidly ageing and decaying, at least spiritually. This lack of meaning or purpose in not having orders show how the ideal is rudderless without something further to conform to and enforce. With no adventure to go on, the Chums have no life or identity to fall back on. The ideal they represent is ultimately hollow and vacuous. They are fully conformed to the whims of the power that creates them, fully blinded by the light, and hindered from escape to the shadows for then they would truly not exist.
Against the Day and its other threads
These themes in some ways all come together in allusions to the title; against the day, giving back to the day, sufficient unto the day. In this the day means what? The spirit of the times and the current moment? The night illuminated by the light to create the daytime itself? The Worlds Fair almost shows this day’s reinauguration, a truth constructed, guiding one to the future and the centre in the spectacle. The day is coopted. Some accept it, give back to it and pay their tithings as Tesla puts it. Others give it all their hopes, believe in its promises in part, in its guiding light. Others are against it, against the day that is proclaimed, against the spirit and its light – shaped to mystify what is really going on. The day as the illusion.
Those who ride against it, the workers, and the anarchists. While Webb pokes holes in the lies of the bourgeoisie he perhaps falls into the days spirit all the same with the belief in the light and his ability to shape it himself. The battle for the light, is it a losing game?
The Chums take the day by storm, ride its waves of Aether and solidify it in the ideal. The good American boys enforcing the day, watching for those deviating from it and righting themselves when they do too. But this ideal is forever unstable, when they do not have a day to fight for, an area to conquer or a consolidated population to enforce the ideal onto, they become adrift, having no life or meaning outside it, becoming invisible and fictions, in an inverted sense to their usual being. Are they a manifestation of capitalism itself? The ideal it pretends to? The entrepreneurial crew ultimately supported by countless voiceless labourers, with pretentions to their modernity, freedom within their strict hierarchy, given the newest technology to bore through even the earth itself. Spurred onto constant movement by orders of its own internal logic; the Chums must be given their orders, and so they move again – repeat ad nauseam.
With this, these major threads are then crosscut with others I have trouble cohering together just yet. Curious of the character of Scarsdale Vibe, the robber baron archetype. With the globe at the end of his cain, situated in the first wave of globalisation, he holds the world wherever he goes, hiding a bullet underneath it. Seemingly undermining Tesla at the start to funding him the next, capture and co-option? Or the brothers traverse, kits substitution and connection to the Twin Vibes.
“Sure, and isn’t that just the class system for ya? Eternal youth bought with the sickness and death of others.”
I am also taking in the nods to the extradimensional experiences of those such as Kit, Miles Blundell, Lew Basnight and Foley Walker. Seeing or hearing the invisible, versus the visible, dark versus the light. The other frontiers of the invisible and unilluminated? – of electromagnetism, the Chums existence as fictions, the daily unseen minutia or the markets respectively. New possibilities, alternate realities as diffuse as those in the shadows. With a minor adjustment here and there what would happen?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps I tend towards the political and sociological as per my academic interests. My understanding of the scientific aspects of Pynchon’s writing plays pretty hard off of pop-science videos watched on YouTube at 1 in the morning. But it is exhilarating at least to be at a point of taking in a work such as this, not just as a bizarre experience, but as imparting some encyclopaedic knowledge I can perhaps make sense of, at least at this early stage.

Discrete power device segment to account for the highest CAGR during the forecast period for the automotive semiconductor market
The growth and development of the electric HEVs and all EVs has received considerable growth in the recent few years. Hence, discrete power device is expected to be the fastest-growing segment during the forecast period. The reason behind this sharp growth in the market share of the discrete power devices is due to the shift towards electrification of the major applications of the automobile such as powertrain, which is generating more demand for power components such as MOSFET and IGBT. Hence, discrete power devices are likely to hold the largest market share by 2027.
Market for passenger cars to grow at highest CAGR during the forecast period
The market for passenger cars growth can be attributed to the huge demand for passenger cars across the globe, especially in APAC. The rising middle-class population and improved disposable income have accelerated the demand for passenger cars in countries such as China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia among others. Semiconductor electronics not only help improve the performance of the car but also enhance safety and reduce carbon emissions to a greater extent. Rapid improvements in road infrastructure, easy availability of cheap labor, increased purchasing power of consumers, and high demand for safer vehicles have propelled the growth of the market for automobiles in emerging economies. The increasing purchasing power also creates a high demand for automobiles with more safety and advanced features. The adoption of ADAS technology and autonomous cars helps the automotive semiconductors market to grow in developed nations such as the US, Germany, and the UK.
Market for EVs and HEVs to register the highest CAGR for automotive semiconductor market
The automotive semiconductor market for electric/hybrid-powered vehicles is estimated to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Consumer’s growing adoption of greener and cleaner technology, as well as government goals and mandates are expected to lead to a significant rise in the demand for more electric/hybrid fuel-based vehicles which, in turn, helps the semiconductor market for this segment to grow exponentially during the forecast period. Since EVs and HEVs demand more semiconductor content in the powertrain application due to electrification of the system, the average semiconductor content consumed by an EV/HEV is almost double than an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle which include both gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles.
Market in APAC is estimated to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period
Asia Pacific held the largest share of the overall automotive sensors market, followed by Europe, and North America, respectively. The automotive sensors market in Asia Pacific is projected to grow at the highest CAGR from 2021 to 2026. Countries such as China, Japan, and India are considered major automotive manufacturing hubs in Asia Pacific, thereby propelling the growth of the automotive sensors market in the region. The growth of the automotive sensors market in Asia Pacific is attributed to the factors such as the increasing use of electric vehicles and the growing adoption of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous cars owing to the stringent vehicle emission standards. Moreover, major OEMs have invested in the Chinese market, which is inclined toward small and affordable passenger vehicles. This, in turn, is expected to drive the growth of the automotive sensors market in the region.
Major players profiled in this report are Robert Bosch (Germany), Continental (Germany), Infineon Technologies (Germany), NXP Semiconductors (Netherlands), Sensata Technologies (US), Borgwarner, (US), Allegro Microsystems (US), DENSO (Japan), Analog Devices (US), ELMOS Semiconductor (Germany), STMicroelectronics (Switzerland), TE Connectivity (Switzerland), Onsemi (US), Renesas Electronics (Japan), ROHM Semiconductor (Japan), Aptiv (Ireland), CTS (US), Autoliv (Sweden), ZF Group (Germany), Quanergy (US), Toshiba (Japan), Magna International (Canada), Melexis (Belgium), Amphenol (US), and Valeo (France).

2023.06.08 07:06 JPM11S Superman: House of El #3 - Moving at Super Speed

“Pete knows what he saw, Martha!”

“Bunch ‘a frightened children ain’t exactly the--”

A door slammed shut.

Clark Kent, only a young boy, squeezed his eyes shut until it hurt and pressed his hands against his ears until his temples throbbed.

One step after the other. Heavy. Crunching grass.

“You think I’m an idiot, Martha?!”

“Now, I never said that.”

The pained look on Clark’s face softened -- softened, so it could be remolded into a whimper while the rest of his body stiffened.

“He ain’t done nothing wrong, all I’m saying is--”

“All you’re saying is that you’d rather not talk about it!”

“There’s nothing to talk about!”

Then why wouldn’t they stop talking! All of these voices, the thousand-million voices screaming at him, and all Clark could hear were the two arguing over him! Him!

A long, creaking groan. Wood shuddering.

“CLARK!”

The word, his name, knocked the other two sources of dismay from his head, an instant of soothing comfort before the pain took hold again and even more intensely, now as if he were pressing his head against a bass booster. “Pa!” Clark cried out, only to regret it as quickly as he had acted on the impulse.

“CLARK!”

His father called for him again and, judging from what should have been the imperceptible way the wind whistled, began dashing around in search of him; it took nothing less than an eternity for Pa to finally find him and one thunderous thwump after the other to finally lay eyes on him.
Pa pulled down the last barrel of hay -- Clark had stacked some around himself in an attempt to muffle the noise -- before breathing a sigh of relief; little did he know, it was a veritable wind storm to his son. “Remember…” he made sure to whisper, his small crisis finally abetting, if only a little. “This is all you. You’re inside your own head and that’s making it so much worse. You are the one in control.”
Clark’s only response was a strangled noise and to curl up further into himself.
To that, Pa felt his own throat tighten. “So open your eyes, son, get on back to the rest of the world… I’m right here.” He extended his hand, gently nudging Clark.
Again, no response and, again, Pa’s throat tightened, twisting and winding until the strain became too much to bear, and finally snapped loose under the pressure.

“DAMNIT, CLARK!”

He burst out, the sudden snap of tension giving each word a trembling quality as it all came pouring out. And then Clark flinched, like all boys do when they’re scared or hurt or both, and the dam was suddenly closed again, sealed with a silent promise.
“Son, I--” Pa stammered, his voice the sort of wreck so mired with cracks and creaks that it was a miracle it held together at all. “I didn’t--”
It was then that Clark finally stirred, hands at last unwrapping themselves from around his head, which peaked up ever so slightly to look out beyond his hay-fort at his father. “I’m sorry,” he said, voice so small that Pa struggled to hear it.
His body screamed a thousand different things to say, but he knew that just was the last thing Clark needed right now. So, fighting back to the calm, measured tone he had managed just a scant few moments ago, Pa said, “You best not be sorry, you ain’t done nothing wrong,” and pulled his son out from his refuge.
“Seriously?” Clark seemed dumbfounded by the statement, so much so that he even resisted the tug, if only for a passing second. “You seen what’s happening back there?” He jabbed a finger towards the house. “It’s all me. Literally. They’re arguing about me. ‘Cuz I-I’m some sort of freak or something!”
Pa was quick to correct him. “You ain’t no different from any other boy I ever met.”
He was met with a piercing glare from his son.
“You know what I mean, aside from your gifts--”
“How the hell’re these supposed to be gifts!” Clark threw up his hands in his best attempt at exasperation, but even an ear without super hearing could hear how his throat stiffened with each word.
Pa smiled, shrugging. “Able to race the car, leap the barn in a single bound…”
“But I don’t want to do any of that!” he said, voice finally breaking. “And w-when it comes with stuff like… this…! I just wanna be Clark Kent: Pete and Lana’s friend. Your and Ma’s son. Not some freak!”
“Clark--!” A cross of anger and dread flared in Pa’s voice, and he caught himself from pulling Clark into a hug. Swallowing hard, he instead summoned the warmest smile he could, ruffling the boy’s hair.

“You are my son, but you are so much more than that too.”

To say silence hung thick in the air would have been an understatement, because even silence was something more than being frozen in a single, inescapable instant: Kal-El staring down the man clutching his throbbing hand, the man’s friend looking on flush-faced, and the rest of the establishment bracing for whatever happened next. It was a rare thing that Jon Kent found himself slipping into Bullet Time on accident -- a state of heightened awareness where the world seemed to grow still around him -- and an even rarer thing that it should happen when a bright red cape wasn’t slung around his shoulders; simply put, as an instinctual reaction to being threatened, there needed to be, well, something that could threaten him, and there weren’t very many things that seriously could: Kryptonite, which Jon was confident wasn’t in play, and being yelled at, which he couldn’t have even known.
It was then that it dawned on him, so obvious that the muscles and tendons along Jon’s arm tensed in anticipation of slapping himself upside the head before he stopped himself -- a small thunderclap born from his own embarrassment was likely to only make the feeling worse. ‘Just an adrenaline rush…’ Jon explained to no one but himself. ‘Because… you know… watching dad do… that.’ The recently appeared doppelganger of his father had broken a man’s finger to “teach him a lesson” -- something his father most certainly would not have done; what he would have done, and what Jon was currently doing, was take a deep, relaxing breath, easing the stress away so that he could “hit play” on the rest of the world.
It came as something of a mild surprise when… nothing happened; Jon panicked, doing a double take as the terrible thought sprung into his mind: What if this was something else, some time-weapon unleashed just then on the city? Or what if he had failed to slow himself down? Would he be forced to wander the world a waking ghost? Jon shook his head, knocking such silly notions from his mind -- and also getting the attention of Natasha Irons.
“Something up?” she asked, broken from her spellbound trance.
Jon blinked. “Nope. Nothing.” The Ace ‘o Clubs could be a little rough around the edges, so what didn’t even qualify as a minor scuffle at the bar hardly registered with many of the patrons, who merely kept about their business as if nothing had happened -- because, to them, nothing had. Jon shook his head again, chidding himself for thinking that a cursory glance in that general direction had been any real indication of interest; his own bias, he supposed.
Kal-El returned to the table, his sheer weight and size making it known despite the fact that Jon’s attention had been elsewhere. No one said anything, and it took the visitor from another world a few passing seconds to realize that fact -- like they were all waiting for him to do something.
Kal looked up, a look of restrained puzzlement on his face.
Lois’s lips went thin. “What was that?”
“What was… what?” Kal-El’s eyes darted across everyone’s face, searching for an answer.
Irons nudged him gently.
“Wait, really?” he almost recoiled, tilting his chin up and cocking his head, confusion finally overtaking him. “I--”
“Was wrong.” Lois finished the sentence for him. “The hell were you thinking?!”
Jon and Natasha exchanged looks.
Kal-El shrugged it off. Literally. “The way I see it, a broken finger or two isn’t going to impede him in any real way, while also being something he’s not going to just forget.”
“So that makes it alright?!” insisted Lois, leaning forward.
“...yes?” he answered. “Though I feel like that’s… not the answer you wanted.”
That’s not how we do things here.
At that moment, with just how each word was frozen in a block of ice, Jon could have swore his mom had spontaneously developed Frost Breath; ironically, that was what inspired him to finally intervene. “You know, mom,” he explained, “In class, the professors always talked about how different all these cultures were from each other: food, clothing, language, medicine, you get the idea… Their sense of justice, how they handled punishments and such… that was one of the big ones too. Judeo-Christian morality versus something like Hammurabi's ‘an eye for an eye.’” He paused, making sure his mom was actually listening. “So, you know, on Kal’s Earth, maybe that was perfectly acceptable. Heck, there’re a lot of people here who would agree with him.”
Lois stopped to consider her answer, though it seemed more an imitation of the action than a genuine attempt. “He’s here now, and that wouldn’t make it right if he wasn’t.”
“Listen, I’m really sorry if--” Kal-El raised his hands in apology.
“No, no,” Jon waved him off, gaze never breaking from his mom. “You can’t just force your values onto another culture.”
“Like he forced that guy’s finger back?” she countered, rising to the bait. “Seems like that’s exactly what you’re talking about.”
“If I was talking about him right now, sure, but I’m talking about you,” insisted Jon. “You’re just doing the same thing you’re complaining about him doing.”
Lois lowered her chin, motioning towards herself. “So, wait, I’m the one who’s done something wrong here?”
“The both of you, yes.”
“So you’re saying it was perfectly alright?”
“I just said it wasn’t.”
“Oh, so you’re not judging him based on your own values?”
Jon shook his head, grinning. “You’re trying to distract from the point!”
“No, I just think the entire argument is flawed, since by criticizing someone like that, you’re inherently impressing your own values on them,” she explained. “You know, the thing you’re taking issue with.”
“But you’re from the same culture as I am: he isn’t.”
He isn’t sitting right here, yes…” Kal-El groaned.
Lois and Jon kept going like he wasn’t.
“He’s impressing his own cultural values on someone from another.”
“Right, and I agree, but I’m taking issue with you right now, because--”
“Because it’s time for this conversation to end,” Irons finally interjected, much to the audible relief of Kal and Natasha, whose shoulders visibly relaxed. “Seriously, I think I speak for all of us when I say I can hardly follow what you two are going on about.”
“We’re saying--” Jon and Lois began in unison, only to be cut off with a raised hand.
“We’ll manage without it,” he chuckled.
There was a brief lull in the conversation, a time where the most activity was Jon’s eyes scampering about the place and the beat of Kal-El’s fingers against the table. Eventually, Jon’s gaze locked onto something or, more accurately, the lack of something.
With his mouth hung open just slightly, Jon asked, “Hey, did anyone notice Mr. Bibbowski?”
“Yeah,” Natasha spoke up, glancing around the table. “Didn’t you guys’s see?”
She took the blank stares as a no.
“Didn’t you guys catch the sign-note-thing?”
More blank stares.
“Okay, seriously, two of you have literal super senses and the other two are, like, super geniuses.” Nat waved her hands around. “You know what, doesn’t matter. I’m getting off topic. Bibbo’s in the hospital. The sign was about raising money.”
“What?” Lois pressed, immediately leaning forward. “What’s wrong?”
His gaze a million miles away -- or, more accurately, only a few -- Jon answered first. “Lung cancer. He’s in Metropolis General. Room 414.”
Irons chewed his lip, then looked up directly into Jon’s eyes. “First thing tomorrow, you pay him a visit, ‘kay?”
“But I was just going to now…?” Jon cocked his head. “What don’t I know about?”
🔻 🔺 🔻 🔺 🔻
In retrospect, the thought that Kal-El would need somewhere to stay really should have occurred to him sooner than it had -- well, that might have been putting it a little too generously: had occurred to him at all. To be fair, though, it wasn’t every day that you met your deceased father from another world, though, also to be fair, he dealt with weirder things on a regular basis.
The Fortress of Solitude, Superman’s icy abode at the top of the world and one of the scant few remaining pieces of Krypton, seemed the most logical place to house Kal while they worked on returning him -- and everyone else -- back to the proper Earth, and it seemed that Jon wasn’t the only one who thought so. Following their malaise-laiden departure from the Ace ‘o Clubs, it was the immediate destination of the not-so-merry band, traveling up across the globe to it’s frosty doorstep, where they needed Jon to heft the Fortress’s giant, golden key above his head and unlock an equally gargantuan front door. The key was made of Supermanium, a metal forged by Clark from the heart of a dying star, and weighed an incalculable millions of tons, the only security measure needed despite it sitting out in the open.
Jon slotted the end of the key bearing the Crest of El into the groove, turning it to trigger the rumblings of icy shards as they peeled back to reveal a wall of blinding, cleansing white light. The group took a step forward, entering into another world -- almost literally: born of materials not of Earth and minds born far from it, the Fortress resembled something best described as an alien, crystalline landscape. The ground was a maze of large, roughly hexagonal spires with smoothly shorn tops, each of which peaked at a slightly different elevation and tapered off in the distance to create a sheer drop; at the edge of that cliff sat a circular array of crystals gently pulsing with light and humming just barely above perception. Placed around what was assumedly the central chamber of the Fortress, judging from the hewn hallway entrances at the perimeter, were trophies and mementos from Clark’s decades-spanning career as Superman, items ranging from the mundane, like Lex Luthor’s shrinking ray, to the absurd, such as psychic sand from the dimension of Quarm, to the profound, like the precious Bottled City of Kandor, a shrunken Kryptonian city rescued from the clutches of the vile Brainiac many years ago.
Kal-El loosed a low whistle. “Wow,” he said, eyes flitting about the place, jumping from the looming pillars that came together to form an arched ceiling, to the large, gaping voids dotted around where the spires didn’t conjoin. “It’s so… clean.
“Come again?” Jon quirked a brow.
With a flutter of his cape and a look that Jon almost mistook for melancholy, Kal-El raised several inches above the ground and began drifting between the various exhibits on display. “Clean. See, I… I live in my… Fortress of Solitude, so--”
Jon finished for him. “Like a dirty room.”
“Exactly,” Kal looked up from the display and flashed him a subtle smile. “Like a dirty room.”
Lois, unable to fly and wearing shoes ill-begotten for her husband’s arctic-O.S.H.A.-violation, carefully stepped across one hexagonal tile to the next until she finally approached the black-suited Superman. “Little lonely living at the top of the world, no?”
“It is called the Fortress of Solitude.” There was a slight edge to his voice, though Lois could tell it wasn’t one pointed towards her. “Maybe, I wanted to be alone.”
Lois cocked her hip, rested her hand on it, and considered for a long moment pressing deeper, giving in to the gut screaming at her that this was the thing to pick at. Her heart, though… her heart counseled now was not the time, and she had long since learned the wisdom of always following her heart. “If you’re looking for solitude, we might have brought you to the wrong place,” she suggested instead.
In the same manner Jon had not a moment ago, Kal quirked a brow. “What do you mean?”
“A thousand apologies.” From across the room, a voice not unlike his carried, though distorted to an almost unnatural bass and strained with what was best described as someone fighting hard against a thick accent. “If I had been expecting guests, I would have prepared something for you all to enjoy.”
The comparisons to Clark and Kal-El didn’t end with just the man’s voice; while his face and form were the same general shape, his skin was ashen and craggy, like a smooth stone. With every step forward he took, the mass of rippling, coiled muscle underneath his purple-blue Superman t-shirt strained against their confines. “Ah, I see we have another visitor, unless my brother decided death didn’t suit him.” He inclined his head, placing a large hand over his even larger chest. “For now, you can call me Bizarro.”
Natasha, a gleaming smile on her face, chimed in. “We’ve been working on choosing a name!” she said, bounding towards the behemoth and wrapping herself around one of his hulking arms.
Bizarro returned the affection as best he could. “It was Nat’s idea. We were watching Space Trek: Pathfinder one night and--”
“And I was there too,” Jon interjected.
“And Jon was there too,” he chuckled. “But one of the characters was searching for a name and, considering the circumstances, it seemed appropriate that I do the same.”
Floating over towards Bizarro, Kal-El dragged his sight up and down the man, the doppelganger of his enemy from another world, eyeing him with a mix of reservation and curiosity. Eventually, Kal paused on the Crest of El worn on his chest. “You’re not like mine.”
Bizarro nodded. “In one key respect, yes. I’m not as--”
“Dumb.”
Slow,” he finished, correcting him with a side-eyed glance. “While Jon was working a case with the Flash, Mister Allen devised a way to ‘speed up’ my thought processes.” (
Author’s Note: See The Flash #19!) Bizarro paused for several more long moments, looking at Kal like he had to him not a second ago before shaking his head, seemingly perishing the thought. “You’ve met me,” he said, smiling. “Have you had the chance to meet our other housemate?”
Kal cocked his head. “Other housemate?” He threw his eyes behind Bizarro, expecting someone else to enter the chamber, but no one came. “Another reformed villain?”
“Your cousin,” Jon interjected, taking a step forward. “Kara. She got here only a few months ago.”
The spark of joy on Kal’s face lived up to its description: appearing in a bright instant, only to vanish as soon as it came, replaced now by a deeply furrowed brow, emphasizing the lines on the man’s face. “How’s she taking the adjustment? Losing one world, then another, I can’t--” Kal cut himself off when he saw Jon’s eyes widen slightly and his mouth open in response: he didn’t need to wait for the correction he was about to receive. “She’s not from another Earth like me… Where is she? I’d like to meet her.”
Lois shrugged. “She’s busy in National City right now, if I remember correctly, but--”
Irons stepped behind Lois, his hulking form framing her. “But we’d like to wait a minute and figure out how to break the news to her first.”
“No,” Kal said, every muscle in his powerful body visibly tensing, rearing. “She needs my help! You don’t understand what it’s like! You’re not like her! None of you, not really. Only I can understand.”
With a withering look, Irons replied. “You’ve never even met her, how can you know better than her own family?
I am her family,” asserted Kal, beginning his ascent into the air. “I helped my Kara through this once already, I can do it again.”
“And you’re the problem! You know how much she’s going through right now?!” Irons shouted up at him. “You died! The person she was sent here to protect! Dead! And now here you are in the flesh and blood! She’s got a lot to process already without that!”
There was a lengthy bout of silence between Kal and everyone else, only coming to an end when the otherworldly Man of Steel asked, “And who’s going to stop me if I try anyway?”
Jon swallowed.

2023.06.08 06:51 Time-District-4148 Ethernet Issues.

Long time Lurker First time poster. :c
I've been having some issues with ethernet speeds over the last couple days. Frontier Gig Service. Pulling anywhere between 80~150 down on Cat6 Was pulling 950+ Before the problems started. The thing that's throwing me off though is the upload speeds are consistent 900+. =/
ONT And Router were replaced, eero was installed with the old router being used as a switch but the problem persists.
Link speeds~~~
ONT show 1Gb/1Gb
ONT to eero 1Gb/1Gb
eero to switch 1Gb/1Gb

-Full Duplex (1Gb) -IPv6 off/on didn't make a difference. -I've tried different DNS none of it was making a difference aside not being able to load some pages later in testing.

Cables were checked, Tried Bypassing the Router entirely and connecting directly to ONT, problem persisted. used new cables and ISP provided cables know working.
Tried switching the ethernet cables between switch>PC over to eeros>switch speeds were fine between them but still slow to PC.
there's two computers that are connected Via Ethernet and both are having the same issue AFAICT.
Called Frontier and had them run speed tests on their end with the cables switched around and they were showing full speed to ONT and ONT to Both eeros and Switch. Tried the built in Speed test on eeros app and it also shows 950+ down/up, But the download to PC is still really slow.
Both where working fine. 950 up/down Up until a couple days ago.

For reference:
eero Pro 6 V6.15.1-410
NVG468MQ Version: 9.3.0h7d91
Network Adaptor (PC): Intel(R) Ethernet Controller (3) 1225-V (v.2.1.3.3)

Another Thing I JUST noticed as I was typing this up. M-lab speed test off of google search page when you Just google "Speed test" Pull scores of 600+Up and 900+Down BUT Every other speed test Pulls Way lower.
Fast speed test: 150down /900+Up
Spectrum: 75.5 Down /900+Up
Google Fiber Test: 44 Down /900+Up
Speak Easy: 118 Down /900+Up
ookla : 220 Down /900+Up

I've tried looking around on here for solutions, But I haven't found one yet. I feel like I've tried what I can think of and am Genuinely stumped.

2023.06.08 04:14 Niketrocity Wired ethernet to ONT vs. using Coax for gaming

I recently got fiber (1 gig) installed in my home and didnt know that coax was utilized in my fiber install. I assume it was because the ONT (located in my garage) was pretty far from router location (in office room) and coax was already in my office room due to me having Spectrum before. I was curious if there was a significant difference (in terms of latency) from running a long ethernet wire from the ONT to the router than using coax (using a moca adapter provided by Frontier), particularly in gaming since I game a lot?

“This is a landmark approval representing an inflection point for AVITA Medical,” said Jim Corbett , AVITA Medical (RCEL) Chief Executive Officer. “The FDA approval now offers surgeons a best-in-class treatment option for a multitude of severe wounds within inpatient and outpatient settings.”
The expanded indication represents a broad label of full-thickness skin defects, such as wound injuries after traumatic avulsion (e.g., degloving), surgical excision (e.g., necrotizing soft tissue infection), or resection (e.g., skin cancer), thereby dramatically expanding the company’s market opportunity at least five times.
“We had a high level of confidence in the FDA’s approval timeline of RECELL for the treatment of skin defects,” continued Mr. Corbett. “In anticipation of the expanded indication, we more than doubled our field sales organization in the first few months of the year. Our sales team is now ready, trained, and fully prepared for the commercial launch, which will commence July 1, 2023 . On behalf of AVITA Medical (RCEL) , I’d like to express my utmost appreciation to the many patients and healthcare providers who partnered with us to help bring our innovative technology to more patients across the U.S.”
The RECELL System was first approved in the U.S. for the treatment of severe burns in 2018. The system is an autologous cell harvesting device that prepares, produces, and delivers a regenerative cell suspension, Spray-On Skin™ Cells, using a small amount of a patient’s own skin. The Spray-On Skin Cells contain a combination of single living cells that stimulate healing and repigmentation throughout the wound bed.
Currently, skin grafting is the standard of care for full-thickness skin defects, including post-trauma and post-surgical skin reconstruction. However, skin grafting requires the harvesting of donor skin, resulting in an additional wound to the patient. Significant pain, delayed healing, risk of infection, the need for multiple procedures, discoloration, and scarring are associated with donor site wounds. Based on results from the company’s pivotal trial for soft tissue repair and reconstruction, RECELL demonstrated statistically non-inferior healing rates with statistically significant donor sparing, meaning less skin from the patient is required to repair and close the wound without compromising the healing outcomes relative to convention autografting.
The PMA supplement received prioritized review through the FDA’s Breakthrough Device program. The FDA grants the Breakthrough Device designation to medical devices that provide more effective treatment of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases or conditions. The PMA supplement approval follows the original PMA approval of the RECELL System for the treatment of severe burns in September 2018 .
AVITA Medical’s clinical trial in soft tissue repair has been funded in part with Federal funds from the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), under ongoing USG Contract number HHSO100201500028C.

AVITA Medical’s first U.S. product, the RECELL System, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2018 . The RECELL System is approved for acute partial-thickness thermal burn wounds in patients 18 years of age and older or application in combination with meshed autografting for acute full-thickness thermal burn wounds in pediatric and adult patients and full-thickness skin defects after traumatic avulsion (e.g. degloving) or surgical excision (excision (e.g., necrotizing soft tissue infection) or resection (e.g., skin cancer), in patients 15 years of age and older. In February 2022 , the FDA reviewed and approved the PMA supplement for RECELL Autologous Cell Harvesting Device, an enhanced RECELL System aimed at providing clinicians a more efficient user experience and simplified workflow.
The RECELL System is used to prepare Spray-On Skin™ Cells using a small amount of a patient’s own skin, providing a new way to treat severe wounds, while significantly reducing the amount of donor skin required. The RECELL System is designed to be used at the point of care alone or in combination with autografts depending on the depth of the burn injury or in combination with meshed autographs for full-thickness skin defects. 2023.06.08 00:24 catfoodonmyshelf JetBlue vs Frontier

Hi all! So I got invited to a F2F for Frontier in Denver for 6/27 and they’re paying for airfare but no hotel. I finally got a response from JetBlue a couple days ago and was initially invited to BlueReview 6/20 in Orlando but I’m on a 3 week trip in Japan right now until 6/21😭 So I clicked to reschedule and it rescheduled me for 6/27 in New York. I basically live in Orlando so I was hoping it would reschedule to Orlando but now they’re conflicting dates and I’d have to pay for airfare/probably hotel for NYC since the earliest flight lands from Orlando at 750am.
I’m thinking I want to do JetBlue anyway because training is in Orlando and I think I like the idea of JetBlue more than Frontier but let me know what your opinions are!
