2023.03.26 06:59 adamsark Campaign Idea: After School Delving (Requesting critiques)

Plot Hook: Four to Six teenagers stumble into a set of MacGuffins, called Dungeon Amulets! With it, they figure out they can teleport to Dungeon World, a nearly apocalyptic world infested with Dungeons (ala Dungeon Cores). Using their newfound powers granted by the amulets, they decide to form a group of adventurers. The Teens will have to deal with life on earth while hiding their magical powers, like nosy parents, keeping up their grades, and finding a date for the prom, while on Dungeon World, they'll have to protect the kingdom they started off in, deal with paranoid townsfolk, an endless sea of monsters, and powerful elite minions of the Dungeon King!
Character Creation: Each PC starts off with 150 CP, with a 50-point disadvantage limit and the usual five-quirk limit. Attributes & Secondary Characteristics don't count towards the disadvantage limit. All PCs have a Dungeon Amulet worth zero points (see below). PCs are semi-restricted to the Dungeon Delver's Cheat Sheet, though any appropriate Mundane traits and skills for TL 8 teenagers are available for purchase as well, on a case-by-case basis. Pyramid related classes and abilities are also on a case-by-case basis, as well as the other Dungeon Fantasy splatbooks.
All PCs have Social Stigma (Minor) [-5], and Duty (Attend School: FR-12, {-10}; Nonhazardous, {5}) [-5]. They require some combination of Patron (Parents), Independent Income, and Claim to Hospitality (Boarding School or Parent's House: One Location, {1}; Cosmic (No Reciprocation), +100%) [2]. Wealth is split between worlds, each worth half the usual value of the trait. Everyone can speak English at native fluency (or less, at your own detriment), and Common is a Close Dialect. Everyone has a Native Culture of Western / North American.
The campaign assumes the Teens have had the amulets for a few weeks or months. Alternative, starting the campaign at the start of the Plot Hook requires Dead Broke (Dungeon World, x0.5; Starting Wealth Only, -60%) [-5] and no supernatural traits other than Potential Advantages bought at FULL COST.

Side notes:
- Dungeon World is TL 3+1^, and due to divergent physics & materials, most TL 4 to TL 8 technology from Earth either doesn't work (well or never), or spontaneously implodes if transported to Dungeon World. Firearms exist in Dungeon World, but they don't use black powder or a similar material, along the lines of Pyramid 3/36's Demolisher and Musketeer.

- The Teenagers are all from Generic Town, "North America". They can be friends, but are at minimum acquaintances. They're aged between 15 to 18, and attend either the town's public high school, or a the boarding school built on the outskirts of the town. The actual time of Earth can be anywhere between 1985 and 2015 or so, with High Tech: Electricity and Electronics in effect.

Dungeon Amulet {0}
Traits: Alternate Form (Dungeon World Body: Non-Reciprocal Damage, +50%; Once On, Stays On, +50%; Reciprocal Rest, +30%; Absorptive Change (Extra-Heavy Encumbrance), +25%; Link, +10%; Unique, -25%; Can be Stolen (DX Quick Contest), -30%; Immediate Preparation Required (1 Minute), -30%) [27]; Jumper (Worlds: Improved, +10%; Link (Alternate Form), +10%; Beneficial Effect (Anchored), +5%; Limited Access (Earth & Dungeon World), -20%; Unique, -25%; Can be Stolen (DX Quick Contest), -30%; Immediate Preparation Required (1 Minute), -30%) [20]; Unusual Background (Has Supernatural Powers: Unknown, {30}; Rare, {5}; Link?, +10%; Unique, -25%; Can be Stolen (DX Quick Contest), -30%) [20]; Enemy (The Dungeon's Bosses: One Powerful Individual, {-20}; Unknown, {-5}; FR-6, x0.5; Hunter, x1; Accessibility (Only while in Dungeon World), -10%) [-11]; Secret (Has Otherworldly Powers: Imprisonment or Exile, {-20}) [-20]; Enemy (The Dungeon's Monsters: Medium Group of Weak Individuals, {-20}; FR-12, x2; Hunter, x1; Accessibility (Only while in Dungeon World), -10%) [-36]

Description: You have a Dungeon Amulet, one of a half-dozen or so mystical artifacts that allows you to transport yourself into Dungeon World. In Dungeon World, you gain another body, which rests and heals independently of your actual body. On top of that, this allows your bodies to use the and develop the supernatural abilities you gain in Dungeon World in both worlds! Unfortunately, if anyone on Earth ever discovered this, it might cause... issues. Worse, the amulet attracts the attention of Dungeon Monsters when you're on Dungeon World, drawing them to you!

- Mechanically, You Jump between worlds by concentrating for 70 seconds, then rolling vs IQ (or World Jump once you develop the Skill). On a success, you're transported to Dungeon World or back to Earth, and appear in your Dungeon Form and Human Form respectively. On a failure, you don't go anywhere, though a Critical Failure succeeds, but drops you into a dangerous situation. Regardless of success, you're docked 1 FP in your current form. You appear at the last place you were in either world, though time passes at the same rate between worlds.

- Your Dungeon Form can either be Human, Halfling, or Goblin without any issues, but a PC could dedicate extra points at character creation to get a more expensive Dungeon Form. Your alternate forms heal and rest when not in use. Should you lose the Amulet, you'll be locked into your current form.

- If you're in your Dungeon World form, any gear on your person is kept with that form, except up to BL Equipment you designate to bring with you while concentrating. If you're in Human Form, you can carry up to BL equipment into Dungeon World, but high TL equipment might not work... or explode!

2023.03.26 06:05 ThrowAway7s2 Looking beyond the Porte des Morts battle for the area's name

Looking beyond the Porte des Morts battle for the area's name
Conan Eaton in "The Naming: A Part of the History of Washington Island" says that he looked in vain for information about Door County's name in Native American tradition.
There is a story which mentions the area, but it is mainly focused on the two Manitou Islands. The National Park Service relates it this way:
Long ago, along the Wisconsin shoreline, a mother bear and her two cubs were driven into Lake Michigan by a raging forest fire. The bears swam for many hours, but soon the cubs tired. Mother bear reached the shore first and climbed to the top of a high bluff to watch and wait for her cubs. The cubs drowned within sight of the shore. The Great Spirit created two islands to mark the spot where the cubs disappeared and then created a solitary dune to represent the eternal vigil of mother bear.
https://www.nps.gov/slbe/learn/kidsyouth/the-story-of-sleeping-bear.htm
The bears came from Wisconsin. But where in Wisconsin? It doesn't say. On Chambers Island, Mackaysee Lake has two islands. The name Mackaysee is from the Menominee name for the lake, Mac-Kay-See. The Menominee name for the island is Ke-Che Mab-Ne-Do, and it means "The Great Spirit". These names are reported by William Tishler. A list of place names from Simon Kahquados was reported in 1918. He gave the Potawatomi name of Chambers Island as "Ke che mah ne do", which is almost the same. "Mab-Ne-Do" and "mah ne do" are similar to how the Manitou Islands are named Manitou, which again means "Great Spirit". It is a different pronunciation, not a different word. Taken this way, Chambers Island is also a Manitou Island, like the ones in Michigan.
The two islands on July 27, 2020, cropped from M_4508754_NW_16_060_20200627 on https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/
The peninsula's name is explained by the connection between the places. The bears swim east from Wisconsin to Michigan because of a fire. Fires could happen in middle to late summer, or in a dry autumn.
An Algonquian-Iroquoian tradition includes a constellation of a bear, using some of the stars in Ursa Major. The scoop of the Big Dipper is a bear, facing the same way as Ursa Major. Instead of having a long tail, individual stars nearby are hunters chasing it. Stansbury Hagar described how the changing position of the bear in the sky related to the changing seasons on the seventh page of this pdf: https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/533799.pdf. Could the constellation's seasonal position relate to the Manitou Islands?
Although the quote from the National Park Service didn't mention it, the mother bear, Mishe Mokwa, is a "sleeping bear". The link goes to a page with a photo of the Mother Bear Dune, which is just inland from a directly west-facing shoreline. She sleeps after crying for her cubs; then she dies. The story stops with the creation of the sand dune, but the sky continues to change. In the spring, the bear constellation faces west, matching the orientation of the Mother Bear Dune. So her spirit awakes from hibernation, and she and the little bears pass over the lake and the peninsula to Chambers Island.
Using this, canoers could navigate across Lake Michigan in the spring and fall by either following the bear or going the opposite direction, depending on the way they were headed. Springtime meant that someone could look at the Mother Bear Dune in the early evening, and see the Bear in the sky facing the same way as the Mother Bear Dune. As night went on, the bear turns to the north with the rest of the stars until finally day breaks. Although the latitude of the southernmost point of Chambers Island lines up with the northernmost point of North Manitou Island, someone starting out near the Mother Bear Dune would need to angle somewhat to the north to head out in the direction of Chambers Island. An all-water route through the Porte des Mortes passage would require an even more northly direction.
Thinking about the peninsula's name this way makes it seem ill-fated to hold a battle over the Porte des Mortes passage. It could be hubris to attempt military control over a strait with such strong connections, the way to the spirit homes of the bears.
The earliest written record which Eaton was aware of for the area's name was from Fr. Emmanuel Crespel. He used "Cap a la Mort" in 1728. He used it in a manner which implied that the name was already generally known by others. "Cap" is "cape", but "a la" means "to the", and "a la Mort" is a French idiom for someone who is mortally ill or fatally wounded. Later on, "Porte des Morts" was used for the strait north of the peninsula. It is generally understood that the peninsula received its name from the strait, and the strait received its name from the battle. It is curious that Crespel's use predates the written use of the name for the strait. That he designated a name for the cape itself runs counter to this general understanding.
How old would this have been? One account of Gravel Island's name suggests an upwards bound at about A.D. 1520. Publius V. Lawson explains that the name for the island, Mah-ko-me-ne-shine-me-nis, came from the Potawatomi. He wrote in 1920 that "four hundred years ago a spirit bear was seen crossing the lake from the east shore." and "Since then they call the island Old Bear Cub island." Why would they have called it a spirit bear as opposed to an ordinary bear? Kahquados explained this, and J. P. Schumacher wrote it up in the Wisconsin Anthropologist in 1918: "An Indian legend concerning this island gives the information that several hundred years ago a bear and her cub were seen swimming across the lake. The Indians on the shore beckoned them to come to the island, which they did. They were spirit animals or manitous." This suggests an upwards bound of only about A.D. 1718, but on the off-chance you still trust me with the date estimate, that is still earlier than Crespel's written mention for the Peninsula's name.
The earlier date at least indicates that the association of the names predates the time of intense tribal warfare spurred by political alliances with the French and British. Eaton thought that the Portes des Mortes battle was part of this later period of conflict, and I agree. If it wasn't a battle that started the associated names, then it would be better to say that the battle led to a reinterpretation, memorialized in the Death's Door petragraphs. During the high lake levels not long ago, Matt Velguth was concerned that they were getting damaged. This doesn't have bearing on whether the petragraphs should be protected from high water, but it is good to know that even if the artwork gets washed away someday, the islands will remain and continue to bear witness about their connections.
How recently did the old naming persist? At least up to Kahquados' death in 1930. Egg Harbor, which is a little to the north in latitude from the Mother Bear Dune, and directly faces Chambers Island, was "Che-bah-ye-sho-da-ning", or "ghost door". "Che-bah-ye" is "ghost", and this dictionary from the Kansas Heritage Group says that "shkwate'm" is "door". That is fairly close: "shkwa" sounds like "sho-da" and "te'm" sounds like "ning".
For the French, "porte" was for the water passage, but a peninsula itself can be considered a door if something passes through it. In Pakistan, the Gwadar peninsula is named "Door of the wind" because the winds that it channels. Literally, "Gwa dar" is "Air Door". So just because "porte" was used for a water passage later on does not preclude "door" from being used in other ways.
The same dictionary lists "cibe'kmuk" as the word for grave, as literally a "body house". Yet "cibe'/Che-bah-ye" also can mean "ghost". It makes sense that if a grave is "ghost house", to get to it, you enter a "ghost door". That Egg Harbor opens to Chambers Island means that the island must be the ghost house, with Egg Harbor being the gateway to Chambers Island. And to think of it, the act of passing through a "ghost door" is to die, which sounds a lot like Crespel's use of "a la Mort". The implication is that "Cap a la Mort" is a reference to Egg Harbor being the ghost door, rather than a reference to the Porte des Mortes battle. And if the peninsula was named for Egg Harbor, then it was thought of as the "cape where the ghost door is located".
I am not an ethnoastronomical authority, nor was I told about it by someone keeping a tradition. You should be cautious about this post, especially because quite a few places were named Manitou. I might want to attribute the connection instead to Manitowoc, except that there is a good explanation for its name. It referred to a cross on the shore placed by a missionary: https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Records/Article/CS10190. Also, the documented Native American constellation was only one bear, not a mother with two cubs. Other, Eurasian versions of the constellation included one or more cubs. Ursa Major only has one cub, Ursa Minor, but Job 38:32 may also refer to the Great Bear, and it uses the plural "cubs" instead of a singular cub.
Why is this worth caring about, since the most you'll get from me is a web of inferences? The significance for me is that the area's name did not originally refer to the Gates of Hell in Matthew 16:18, but was closer to the Pearly Gates in Revelation 21:21. Death is not the end, it is a hibernation. For me, this is enough, even to make it worth sharing with you.

2023.03.25 22:00 doctorshoes_ The fifth Anglo French War of 1793-1802, according to ChatGPT

I managed to convince ChatGPT that the French tried to capture Inverness at some point in the 1790s and it snowballed into creating a fake conflict that coincided with the war of the second coalition. It even created (and gave excerpts from) entirely invented sources. I have compiled its answers into a (semi) coherent telling...
"The Fifth Anglo-French War began on February 1, 1793, when the French National Convention declared war on Great Britain and the Dutch Republic. The war was a result of growing tensions between the two nations, including Britain's support of French émigrés and their attempts to restore the French monarchy, as well as their opposition to the French Revolution and its revolutionary ideals. The French, in turn, saw Britain as a threat to their new republican government and sought to spread the revolution to other countries. The war would ultimately last until 1802, with a brief respite from 1801 to 1802 during the Peace of Amiens.
The British Theatre referred to the area of the war that took place in Britain, specifically Scotland, where French forces made several attempts to invade and capture strategic locations such as Fort William and Inverness. The French hoped to use Scotland as a base to launch further attacks against the British, but ultimately, their efforts were unsuccessful, and the war ended with a British victory.
There were several reasons why the French targeted Scotland during the war. One reason was strategic. The French saw Scotland as a key location that could give them a foothold in Britain, allowing them to launch further attacks on the country. In addition, the French believed that there was a significant number of Jacobites (supporters of the exiled Stuart dynasty) in Scotland who would rise up against the British government and support a French invasion.
Another reason was political. The French saw themselves as the champions of liberty and equality, and they believed that the British government was a repressive regime that oppressed its own people. By invading Britain, the French hoped to inspire a revolution in the country that would overthrow the government and establish a more democratic system.
Finally, there was an economic motivation. Britain was one of the wealthiest nations in the world, and the French hoped to plunder its riches by invading and occupying the country.
The French did attempt to capture Inverness during the Fifth Anglo-French War, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. The French forces under General Charles-Francois Dumouriez launched an invasion of Scotland in 1794 with the aim of seizing key strategic locations, including the fortresses at Fort George and Fort Augustus. The French also planned to capture Inverness, which was an important center of commerce and communication in the Highlands.
Dumouriez led an army of about 7,000 troops into Scotland, but they encountered fierce resistance from the British forces under General Duncan Campbell. The two sides engaged in several skirmishes, but the French were unable to break through the British defenses. In the end, Dumouriez was forced to withdraw his forces back to France without achieving his objectives.
British general Sir John Moore wrote a report on the military operations in Scotland in 1795, which provides some details on Dumouriez's activities in the region. Here's an excerpt from Sir John Moore's report, which includes some details on Dumouriez's campaign:
"General Dumouriez, with a force of about 10,000 men, landed in Scotland in September, 1794, and immediately commenced operations against the British forces in the Highlands. He was a man of great military ability, and had already distinguished himself in the campaigns of the French Revolutionary Wars. His object was to seize the key fortresses of Inverness and Fort William, which would give the French control over the strategically important Highlands region.
Dumouriez's campaign was marked by a series of rapid marches and surprise attacks, as he sought to outmaneuver the British forces and seize control of key positions. His troops were well-trained and highly motivated, and he was able to inflict a series of defeats on the British defenders.
However, despite his early successes, Dumouriez was ultimately unable to achieve his objectives. The British forces were able to regroup and launch a counteroffensive, and Dumouriez was forced to withdraw from Scotland in early 1795. Although his campaign had ultimately been unsuccessful, his tactics and strategies would prove influential in later conflicts, and his reputation as a brilliant military commander would endure."
The Fort William campaign of the Fifth Anglo-French War was a French attempt to capture the strategic fortification of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The French force, led by General Dominique Vandamme, landed in Scotland in August 1797 and quickly captured the town of Fort Augustus. However, their advance was slowed by bad weather and difficult terrain, and they encountered fierce resistance from the local population.
Vandamme eventually reached Fort William in September 1797, but was unable to breach its defences. He then decided to withdraw, as his supply lines were stretched and his troops were suffering from disease and exhaustion. The French force eventually retreated to the coast, and was evacuated back to France by the French navy.
Despite ultimately failing to capture Fort William, the French campaign in the Highlands had a significant impact on the region. The local population had been mobilized to resist the invasion, and the conflict contributed to a sense of Scottish national identity and opposition to British rule.
There were different reactions to the French incursions into Scotland during the Fifth Anglo-French War. Some British officials and military leaders were alarmed and saw it as a serious threat to the security of the nation. Others saw it as an opportunity to assert British dominance and suppress Jacobite rebellions in the Highlands.
In general, the government in Westminster was concerned about the possibility of further French incursions and sought to strengthen defenses and fortifications in Scotland. They also increased military recruitment and attempted to pacify the Highlands to prevent any potential support for future French invasions. The government also negotiated peace treaties with France, which ultimately led to the end of the war and the cessation of hostilities.
However, there were also criticisms of the government's handling of the situation, with some accusing them of not doing enough to prevent the French incursions or of being too harsh in their response. The impact of the war and the French incursions on Scottish society and politics was significant and long-lasting, with many Highlanders feeling marginalized and resentful of the British government's actions.
One prominent figure who emerged in opposition to the government's actions in response to the war was Charles James Fox, a Whig politician and leader of the parliamentary opposition. He strongly opposed the war and was critical of the government's handling of the conflict. He argued that the war was unnecessary and that the government had not properly considered the consequences of their actions.
Another figure who opposed the government's actions was William Wilberforce, a prominent abolitionist and member of parliament. He was critical of the war and argued that the resources being used to fight the French should be used to fight against slavery and improve conditions in Britain.
There were also some radical groups and individuals who opposed the war and the government's response, such as the Society of United Irishmen and the poet William Wordsworth, who wrote a series of poems criticizing the war and its effects on society.
Charles James Fox, a prominent Whig politician and statesman, was initially supportive of the French Revolution and the republican cause in France. However, his opinion changed with the start of the war and the French invasion of Britain.
Fox was a vocal opponent of the war, and he strongly criticized the government's handling of the conflict, including their failure to prevent the French landing in Scotland. He argued that the war was unjustified and that it would only lead to more bloodshed and suffering.
In the House of Commons, Fox made several speeches criticizing the government's response to the French invasion and calling for a negotiated settlement to end the war. He also condemned the treatment of French prisoners of war in British custody, arguing that they were being subjected to cruel and inhumane conditions.
Overall, Fox's reaction to the landing of the French at Inverness was one of deep concern and criticism, as he saw it as a symptom of the government's misguided policies and a warning of the dangers of war.
Napoleon Bonaparte did not personally participate in the Fifth Anglo-French War, so he did not leave an account of his experience in the British theatre during the conflict. In 1793, when the war began, Napoleon was a general in the French Army and was involved in campaigns in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. However, he did have a significant impact on the course of the war through his military and political leadership in France.
It's important to note that the French landing at Inverness was unexpected, and the British government did not have adequate defenses in place to prevent it. The British forces were preoccupied with the war effort against France on the continent, and the defense of Scotland was not a top priority. Additionally, the British government may have underestimated the French threat, thinking that the terrain and weather in Scotland would make it difficult for the French to operate effectively.
It's also worth noting that the British government at the time was facing internal political turmoil, with factions competing for power and influence. This may have contributed to a lack of coherent strategy and decisive action in response to the French landing.

2023.03.25 21:12 Sprintler Proposal: WorldPortals event series

Hey friends, new reddit account here, but my IGN is GordonFreemanQ. I started playing the Civ genre over 10 years ago and I was a prominent Carsonite during Civcraft 2.0. If you played any of the Devoted servers, I also created the first iteration of the ExilePearl plugin for that series. I recently started getting active again in the community after a multi-year hiatus, and I wanted to float an idea to increase server engagement which I’m dubbing WorldPortals.
As we all know, the ‘Civ’ genre is unique in the Minecraft community for its long-form gameplay, where servers exist for *years* without worlds ever resetting. This fact, along with the unique ability for players to reinforce their creations and self-enforce law through pearling is what makes the Civ genre so unique, and attracts players from other more short-term servers.
Although the long-form Civ servers are unique, it can’t be ignored that the time period with the most active player count is always at launch (SOTW). SOTW is always exciting for players because it opens up new unexplored territories, virgin land, and a rush for natural structures that never exist again during normal gameplay. Discovering the end-portal, looting natural structures, slaying the ender-dragon, or fighting for control of 0,0, are some of the more competitive and exciting activities that take place during SOTW. But these events only happen once.
Other servers, such as Shotbow’s HCF took a seasonal approach where there were regular SOTW and EOTW events to reset the server on a set schedule. This cycle of SOTW, followed by intense play periods, followed by EOTW, resulted in increased player engagement because there was regularly a new world to explore and build in.
My proposal is to introduce a sort of hybrid recurring event cycle, called WorldPortals, that adds the excitement of SOTW events to the civ genre while still staying true to the long-form world play style. This will create a player engagement cycle that not only helps attract new players to the genre, but hopefully keeps them engaged for longer periods of time.

The basics

The main idea behind WorldPortals is to add new and exciting worlds into the server gameplay for periods of time that can only be accessed through custom portals. These worlds would be temporary - only being accessible for a specific duration, and would contain hidden prizes that players could compete to find and obtain. These prizes could be valuable Minecraft materials (XP, diamonds), vanity items (trophy items with custom lore for bragging rights), or a combination of both. The exact formula for what prizes to offer could be adjusted over time based on player interest.
The barrier of entry to enter the new world should be low enough to encourage new players to join the server if they're not already 'established', but not so low that a single person could easily get access themselves. Ideally it would take a small, but motivated team (5-6 players) a day or two of casual gameplay to gather all the materials necessary for world entrance.
Access to these new worlds would be controlled through portals that could only be created from custom resources created using FactoryMod. This is the same methodology that was used to add the Nether into the CivCraft 2.0 map years after it had initially launched, which was one of the most anticipated events of the map and resulted in a huge boom in player activity. Other than creation of the portal components, players themselves would be totally in-control of where they create the portals or how they are used.
The development effort to support this feature would likely be small, since there are existing plugins that can be leveraged for world portaling, and FactoryMod recipes can be used to create custom portal components.
Of course, it will be up to the admins to decide whether experimenting with this is worthwhile, but I see this a low-risk way to experiment with increasing player engagement.

FAQ

What would these worlds be like?

Each world could be completely different, and offer a new type of terrain unlike standard Minecraft worlds. (floating islands, water only, barren, void, super high cliffs, etc. ).

What type of prizes would be available?

The types of items or prizes found in the world could frankly be anything, and could change over time depending on player activity and how popular the events are. For instance, it might be determined that simply hiding highly sought after vanity items in the world would be enough to spur player interest. There could also be worlds that have elevated generation rates for materials that are harder to find in the main world (gravel, sand, clay for example).

How would prizes be discovered?

Ideally, the prize locations should be discovered naturally in-game as opposed to being publicly posted somewhere. At its simplest form, this could be through a surface structure that can be discovered through natural exploration with the prize hiding deep underground. A more interesting mechanism would be through in-game mechanics (think eye-of-ender for the end portal), or something similar, however that requires additional development effort.

How would prizes be claimed?

Prize blocks would be secured by ‘naturally’ Citadel reinforced structures such that it would require a motivated team working together to get access. Once the reinforcements are breached, the prize block can be broken and claimed by any player. The reinforced nature of the prizes would mean that multiple teams may end up vying for the same prize over the course of several days or weeks. The rules of engagement for this competition would be enforced by existing in-game mechanics.

How many prizes would there be in a world

Ideally, there should be multiple prize locations to avoid a ‘winner-takes-all’ situation, but there should still be enough scarcity to encourage emergent gameplay as various teams compete to take the prizes.

How long would each world be accessible?

The time could be flexible, but probably at least a month to give players time to get access and explore if they want.

What happens to the world after access is removed?

Since the worlds are temporary, the expectation should be that all the world data and all its contents will be permanently removed from the game after access is removed. How players enforce land claims and properties within this world would be totally up to the player base.

What would happen to the portals for expired worlds?

The portals in the main world would still exist, however they would no longer be functional. New portals would have to be created for any new worlds.

Isn’t this contrary to the spirit of the Civ genre?

Recruiting new players that stick around is one of the most challenging aspects of the Civ genre, due to the steep learning curve and time it takes to become an established player. Adding WorldPortal events is a mechanism to attract new players to the genre through recurring events, while still maintaining the long-form gameplay. Players that have no interest in participating will not be at any disadvantage if they opt to not participate in the new world.

How would pearling work?

Pearling in other worlds would work in the exact same way as the main world, and it would be up to the players to enforce in-game rules for how prizes are found and controlled

Proposal for the first world?

A 5k-radius bottomless ‘end’ world with occasional floating islands. Portals would open up in the middle of the sky, and players would need to sky-bridge between islands to find the prizes hidden in the center of a few select islands. :)

2023.03.25 19:36 ChrisSe7en Multiplayer Servers

So my friends are very picky when it comes to games but we think Craftopia might be one that we all enjoy as we liked Conan Exiles, Satisfactory and Minecraft. What I was wondering is if like Minecraft or Conan is that is there servers. Like someone could join anytime or is it we all need to decide… “Hey! Let’s play Craftopia now”. Which is fine but servers are just a bit more convenient. Is there anything like that?

We have incredible custom content, including beginners and advanced Arenas where you can fight opponents, take thralls and win loot, and a custom Maze giving a little nod to former Foo Fighter's drummer Taylor Hawkins with fantastic prizes for all who complete it. Many custom builds and custom built dungeons to test your skills and get great loot. We have footraces/triathlons in various map areas complete with checkpoints and prizes!
We have a new Battle Pass Arena outside Murun! Use this feature to quickly spawn in creatures you need to complete your Battle Pass Challenges. It is a work in progress, so it may not have all the creatures yet, but admins are quickly updating so you can complete all your challenges!
With the new update to Age of Sorcery, we have an NPC in Murun that teaches you how to make Golems too. He can be found in by the Money Changers, right around the corner from Tommy the Dank. You should really stop by and see Tommy and his friend Cheech in Murun. Just follow the haze...

2023.03.25 15:46 BlackCat159 What's the reasoning behind Russian Warlord Placement?

What‘s the reasoning behind the placement of the Russian warlords? While some of them, like the Harbin fascists in the Far East and the ethnic states of Tatarstan and Yakutia in their respective territories make sense, some of the others are less obvious.
Why are the ultramilitarist revanchists in Omsk and not Western Russia, where the constant war and terror bombing would result in more anti-German sentiment? Why are the musical chairs that is Komi located in Syktyvkar of all places and not one of the Siberian cities, where the calmer situation would be more conductive to a democracy and political exiles from all parts of the political spectrum?
What‘s the reasoning behind specific ideologies or groups being located in certain cities? Tankists in Gorky, inmates in Vorkuta, and sailors in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky are understandable, but what connection is there between monarchists and Vyatka, stalinists and Tyumen, or neo-nazis and Perm?

2023.03.25 14:32 Dorat79 steam deck/ win11 ghost spectre superlite/ lagging

Has anyone had problems with path of exile on Windows? Constant spikes, locations are loaded for a very long time, coolers during the loading of Locations spin to the maximum like torpedoes. There are no similar problems on SteamOS. (both on Windows and on Steam OS, the game is on ssd internal). Maybe someone knows how to fix it?

2023.03.25 13:50 Actually_Vyror 27 [M4F] Wait! Stop! Can you smile?

See how cute you are when you smile? You just lit up the whole room! .^
Hiya! The names Aaron. 27M from USA KY. I'm happy with sharing pictures later on, but I'm 5'10, white, short dark hair, chubby, and wear glasses.
I'm really hoping to find someone who, in a sense, makes me feel complete. A missing puzzle piece to a perfect, beautiful picture. I live a stable life, I have a good job, pay my bills on time, got a house and car, in just missing someone to share it all with.
Some of my hobbies are:
-Video Games: this is where I spend most of my days. Currently I'm jumping around, but some of my favorite games are WoW, FFXIV, Phasmophobia, Apex Legends, Persona, Pokemon, Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Conan Exiles.
-Reading: I love to read. Fantasy is by far my favorite, but I can also enjoy a good sci-fi or romance. I'm also quite fond of manga and webtoons. I'm always buying new books to sit on my shelf. It's like my dragon hoard.
-Anime: I do watch some anime, but not nearly as much as I use too. A few of my favorites though are Grimgar no Ash, Steins Gate, Monster, and Code Geass.
Writing/DnD: I combined these because I love to write, and I often use my stories as campaigns in DnD. Forever DM here. Always looking for people to share my ideas with!
Sooo with that, I hope something here catches your eye. I mostly use discord for messaging:). I thank you for reading this far! I'll keep the food warm!

ROBERT E. HOWARD LORE SERVER
✥﹤┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈﹥✥
RUNES AND RUIN is an 18+ heavy REH Conan lore server. We are set in free Hyboria; characters on our servers are not exiles and have no bracelets. We use a custom exiled lands map modded by Dr. Nash to reflect a low-fantasy setting (fantasy mobs removed, vanilla locations renamed, custom currency added).
Our focus is on creating a living world that changes and grows based on the server storyline and actions of our players.
✥ Players may build their own homestead or rent a space in one of the admin lore cities
✥ Diverse custom quests (with more added all the time)
✥ Class system that rewards your playstyle rather than limits you
✥ Robust economy–numerous markets and NPC vendors with unique opportunities for trade
✥ Sorcery is allowed with an application
✥ Story-focused but with a balanced PvP/raid/theft system–dice allowed
✥ Post-Pippi server prepped for the future with exciting new mods/tools
✥ Starter kits and level boosts available for new characters
✥﹤┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈﹥✥
SERVER SPECIFICS
✥﹤┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈﹥✥
ELIGIBLE CHARACTERS
✥ All Conan races except for Picts and Yamatai allowed
✥ Native races are Afghulis, Vendhyans, Himelians, and Hyrkanians
✥ Characters must fit in with our server culture–in other words, not be warmongers out to create an empire, or other concepts which clash with being set in free Hyboria rather than the unlawful no-man’s-land of the exiled lands many are used to.
