When Mashé Manido, the Great Spirit, first made the earth, he also created a large numbers of manidos or spirits.
Some of these spirits were benevolent, but many were malevolent, and they went to live beneath the earth.
Kishä Manido, the Good Spirit, was one of these spirits.
He took a bear who lived near where the Menominee River flows into Green Bay and Lake Michigan and allowed the bear to change his form.
The Bear, pleased at this gift from the Good Spirit, came out of the ground and changed into the first human.
Bear found himself alone and called to an eagle to join him.
The eagle descended from the sky and took the form of a human too.
Bear and Eagle were deciding whom else to ask to join them when a beaver came by and asked to join their tribe.
Beaver too became a human and, as a female, became the first woman.
When Bear and Eagle came to a stream, they found a sturgeon, and Sturgeon became part of their tribe as well.
It is from these early people that the Bear, Eagle, and Sturgeon clans of the Menominee originated.
One day when Bear was going up a river, he got tired and stopped to rest.
As he was talking to a wolf, a crane flew up to them.
Bear asked the crane to fly him up the river, promising to take Crane into his tribe in return. As Crane and Bear were leaving, Wolf asked if he could join them, both for the trip and in their tribe.
Crane took both of them on his back and flew them up the river, and this is how the Crane and Wolf clans came into the tribe of Menominee people.
Bear took the name Sekatcokemau.
He built the first wigwam for his people, and built a canoe so that he and his people could catch fish like sturgeon.
The Good Spirit provided the people with corn, and with medicinal plants.
However, the Good Spirit realized that the Menominee were afflicted by hardship and disease from the malevolent spirits.
To help his people, the Good Spirit sent his kindred spirit Manabush down to earth.
Once there was an old woman named Nokomis who had an unmarried daughter, and the daughter gave birth to twin boys.
One of the boys and his mother died.
Nokomis wrapped the surviving boy in dry grass and put him under a wooden bowl to protect him while she buried the other boy and his mother.
When she returned, she picked up the bowl and found a little white rabbit.
She raised the rabbit, and he became the Great Rabbit, which is "Mashé Wabösh" in Menominee, or "Manabush".
When Manabush came of age, he had his grandmother make two drum sticks with which he drummed to call the people together to a long wigwam he had built.
He taught them many useful things and gave them powerful medicines to cure diseases.
He gave them medicine bags that were made of the hides of mink and weasel and rattlesnake and panther.
From that first meeting comes the Grand Medicine Society of the Menominee today.
Manabush went on to accomplish many great feats for his people.
Once there was a great water monster who killed many people, especially fishermen. Manabush let the monster eat him and then stabbed it from inside and killed it.
To get his people fire, Manabush went far to the east across the water to the wigwam of an old man and his daughters.
The daughters found a little rabbit shivering outside their wigwam and took it in to warm it by their fire.
Manabush grabbed an ember from the fire and fled back with it across the water, bringing fire to his people.
Once he climbed a mountain and stole tobacco from a giant who kept it there, and he had to flee from the giant to bring tobacco back to his people.
As he fled, he hid himself just before a cliff, and the giant ran past him and over the cliff. When the giant climbed back up the cliff, bleeding and bruised, Manabush grabbed him and threw him to the ground, making him the grasshopper that today can only chew at the tobacco plants in the fields.
Once Manabush was out hunting and deceived some birds into singing with him.
When they were close, he caught a swan and a goose on a sand bar and killed them for his dinner.
However, by then he was tired, so he buried the birds up to their necks in sand, built a fire around them to cook them, and lay down to take a nap.
When he awoke, he was hungry, and so he went to get his cooked birds.
When he pulled at the necks, he came up with the heads and necks, but the bodies of the birds were missing.
He ran out on the sand bar just in time to see people in canoes disappearing around a point of land.
Realizing they had stolen his meal, he ran after them yelling "Winnebago! Winnebago!", which is the name the Menominee have used ever since for their thievish neighbors to the south.

Am I the asshole?
I am a 28YG and my former “friend” is a 28F. We met in college at a creative non fiction workshop and when I first saw her, I was impressed by how ugly and poor she was, and yet how she also had a connection to Yale. “Caroline,” I thought to myself, “while you absolutely should judge a book by its cover, especially since sometimes all there is to a book is its cover, sometimes even the ugliest books can have things you can glean from them. Like how you can still harvest organs even from a patient euthanized upon the tableaux.” Out of the goodness and charity of my heart, I approached her. I looked her over. My eyes (green that day) took in the grubby ponytail and frumpy clothes. I sighed. “Wear shoes,” I said flatly. I considered this a kindness as I wasn’t sure what the customs of her people were. I think she grew up at a house juxtapositioned between not one, but two Dunkin Donuts. This thought made me hesitate. I turned back to her. “Also, wear pants.”
Things went pretty well from there, until the Christmas where she gave me the Yale plates. The first time she came over I showed her box of my Yale treasures, watching closely of course to make sure she didn’t steal anything. That year for Christmas she gave me three dinner plates with the Yale crest on them, with “fuck it” written in Sharpie on them. A month later, however, I had an absolute emergency situation pop up. I was in a bind because I hadn’t gotten my allowance yet, but I needed money for the basic essentials like cocaine and truffle butter. So I posted the plates on eBay with the description: “original Yale plates with “fuck it” scribbled on them by Meryl Streep during her time at Yale.” I posted them for $150, then realized I would have to pay someone to take them to the post office because I didn’t know how, so I changed it to $175. They sold pretty quickly to a user named merylfeetlover6969. Anyway, when my friend asked me what happened, I smoothly lied and said they were stolen. It was airtight and I’m such a good liar that she immediately bought it and never brought it up again.
Fast forward a few years and I began my career as an influencer. My friend helped a little but I built my career out of thin fucking air by myself. In fact, I will lay out here exactly what captio- {ERROR: this paragraph has been mostly for length as the file was too large to upload.} Natalie suffered all the consequences of being friends with an addict and never got to reap any of the benefits of knowing the young woman recovery made me.
Where things really went wrong was when we went to Amsterdam. I met this guy with a bike that I really wanted to take to my apartment with me, but I had this absolute hag (again not my opinion! Just basic science I didn’t MAKE her ugly) clinging to me. And also a boyfriend but that’s hardly relevant. I encouraged my friend to flirt with the bartender until finally she decided to stay and have an “adventure” with him. “Thank god,” I thought flatly. “He’s so cute” I said out loud, then gave the signal to the stranger I had met. I climbed onto the back of his bike and directed him to our AirBnB. Pretty soon after we arrived I heard my friend knocking and saw my phone buzzing, but I was in the middle of hooking up with this stranger so I ignored her. What’s one night on the streets of Amsterdam alone? What could possibly go wrong? She’s always whining about wanting exciting things to write about, I figured this would be one of those things that oh I don’t know she could write about one day in an expose article for someone like The Cut. At noon I sent the stranger out the back door and came down to get her. She was really upset for some reason and kept yelling at me! I was shocked. She was clearly fine! I was the one who was going through a tough emotional time trying to forgive myself for cheating on my boyfriend! And yet she had the audacity to make it about herself. At this point I was pretty sure the friendship was over, but it was a few months before we finally stopped speaking.
TLDR: my supposed FRIEND is upset because I abandoned her alone in the streets of Amsterdam to sleep with a stranger and cheat on my boyfriend. Even though she was clearly FINE and I was the one struggling with unavoidable emotional turmoil at the time. So - AITA?

Have some time to finally write a trip review for Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii for my honeymoon in December 2022 for two weeks. Mid December and left for home on Christmas Day. This was our first time redeeming cc points for anything, so lots of trial and error and lessons learned.
My wife and I had gotten married in October and were actually not planning going on honeymoon until Spring 2023 until we researched further and managed to make December 2022 work in our favor. We started planning and booking reservations TWO months before our trip. We are very fortunate to have done it in that time span and managed to make almost everything work out.
IAD - DTW - SEA - OGG on Delta, First Class One way.
Maui
Day 1
Got to Maui late in the night and picked up our rental car, a Chevy Equinox, with Enterprise. Used my Hilton Aspire to get 7x points.
One night at Courtyard Marriott by the airport and paid $500.
It was the best we could do with our timing.
Day 2 - 6
Breakfast and lunch was by the food trucks near Costco. Shopping nearby for supplies for our vacation.
Meals (Costco food trucks):
5 nights at the Grand Wailea - 440,000 HH points
Left to check into our resort the Grand Wailea in Wailea. Both the wife and I are Hilton Diamond members. Mine through the Hilton Aspire and she has status through actual stays. We booked these nights through her account and using all Hilton points. Each reward night was 110,000 points and we got the 5th night free. So 440,000 points total.
This resort was huge and immaculate. Words can describe how nice this place is and the customer service is SUPERB. Literally, the best we have ever experienced. You only have to see and experience it for yourself. My wife and I still talk weekly about the Grand Wailea.
We booked the Terrace View - 1 King Bed as the Standard Night Reward and upon arrival we were upgraded to the Deluxe Ocean View - 1 King Bed in the Molokini wing. Breathtaking views! Avg cash price so this room type is around ~$988 before taxes, fees so it comes to 0.89 CPP (if not including taxes, fees in the total). All meals, incidentals, shopping, and experiences were put onto my Hilton Aspire. Daily food and beverage credit was $25 each for the two of us and used usually at their divine but pricey breakfast buffet. No resort fees charged for booking with points which saved us hundreds of dollars. We immensely enjoyed ourselves at this resort and the lush, manicured surrounding area.
Meals:
Experiences: renting a cabana at the Grand Wailea pool, spa day at the Four Seasons with outdoor hale beachside, Wailea Beach, hiking Twin Falls, Baby Beach, Haleakala National Park
Day 7 - 8
Two nights at the Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux using Amex FHR.
Paid total ~$3400 for the One bedroom, Luxury Suite, Ocean View. Unfortunately, no upgrade upon checking in. Hotel was sold out. Daily breakfast in the form of $30 credit per person and $100 food/bev credit given through the FHR. This stay triggered the $200 FHR credit for my wife's Amex Plat
Quiet, small resort, adults only. We enjoyed our stay here and loved our room. Bed was harder than what we were use to and it was far from the beach. Otherwise we loved the restaurant and the ability to "get away". One of the top hotels in Maui and all of Hawaii. Price tag to boot.
Meals:
Experiences: cabana and pool day at Hotel Wailea, spa day at Montage Kapalua Bay. Outdoor hale with hot tub.
Big Island of Hawaii
Day 9 OGG - KOA (Big Island) round trip booked with Hawaiian Airlines. $106 for each of us before baggage fees. Booked direct using wife's Amex Plat.
Arrived to the Big Island and rented a Toyota Prius though Budget. Paid using Hilton Aspire.
Day 9 - 15
We booked the Hilton Waikoloa Village using all Hilton points, 6 nights in total with one night free. 350,000 pts in total used, 70,000 each night. Initially the standard room redemption was for the Palace Tower Resort View - 1 King Bed and was going for ~$540 a night before taxes/fees so CPP was 0.77. We realized even before our trip that the Palace Tower and old, needed a refresh, and was terribly far from the beach and the parking lot. We asked for an upgrade when we checked in and was given the option to move to the Makai Tower - Ocean View 1 King Bed for an additional $75 per night. We promptly took this offer. This room runs ~$694 per night before taxes/fees and if I subtract the $75 per night, I calculate this to be 0.88 CPP. The Makai tower was much better, our room overlooked the ocean and part of the resort. Frankly, Palace looked like dogshit. Daily F&B credit was $18 for each person. Incidentals again went onto my Hilton Aspire.
Towards the end of our stay, we stayed at the DoubleTree Hilo using 50,000 pts. Room rate was $308 before taxes/fess. CPP was 0.61. This was on the other side of the island and very far from Hilton Waikoloa so we decided to stay overnight there after hiking Volcanoes NP instead of driving to the west side in the middle of the night.
Meals:
Experiences: Kauna'oa Beach, Mauna Kea sunset and stargazing (this is a must!!), Captain Cook monument snorkeling, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National historical park, Punalu-u Black Sand Beach, Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls.
Trip home: OGG - LAX - IAD. United, First Class One way.
Overall, an EXCELLENT trip. We were amazed and thrilled to do so much in two weeks and in such short notice. Again, only two months to plan once our dates were finalized. Between my wife and I, we have the Amex Plat and Gold, Hilton Honors and Aspire, and CFU, CSP. Each card strategically used during our trip. The FHR credit triggered for my wife, and my Aspire triggered the $250 resort credit. If I had to guess, we saved ~$15,000 or more by redeeming CC points. Hope this data point helps some of you trip planning, happy to answer any questions.

Hello, I am reposting this as I've lowered the price and possible locations to meet people. The machine is fully functional and I'm selling it due to health issues. I bought this back in Nov 22' and used to pull 1-2 shots daily until around february of this year. It has not been used much since, so it's better to find someone who will take full advantage of the machine. I live in SD, but will be in the Bay Area the week of June 12th. I am driving so I can bring the machine with me if anybody in the bay wants to meet up to buy, but only for serious buyers otherwise I am local to San Diego.
The machine comes with all original accessories + a rancilio bottomless protafileter and double dose basket. I also upgraded the shower screen . I'm also FIRM on the price.

2023.06.05 04:05 HFYPaprika Do not go gentle into that good night

Gwzuc complained to his father for what felt like the 10th time about being pulled out of school for an entire week to travel to Demila, a backwater planet just so they could visit on a specific date . His father unrelentingly told him once again “This is an important date for myself and the humans, they call it Memorial Day, a day to celebrate and mourn those lost in the line of duty. Of which the humans have lost plenty in the War of Imperial Aggression. Hopefully you will understand once our day has concluded.”
Krlinn Vol'jin was a former Captain in the Federation Armed Forces, being medically discharged after the slaughter of Demilia which saw Federation ground forces being reduced to a mere 20% of what was sent to the planet in an effort to stop the Tuvili Empire from gaining a valuable stronghold in the fight for the Federations survival.
Krlinn and his son Gwzuc arrived at the memorials entrance and proceeded to a hallway immediately to their left, Krlinn already knew exactly where to go, having been here countless times before. Gwzuc on the other hand only got a quick glance around, the wings of the memorial seemingly dedicated species by species with Humanity’s being the largest.
On the way over Krlinn started to speak to his son using a tone Gwzuc was all too familiar with, it meant that his father was about to start one of his famous lectors and not even a charging Curbat could stop him, with nothing better to do Gwzuc listened while walking, his father choosing to not take the speed assist walkways in an effort to have more time to make his point before reaching their destination.
“Now son I know that you have heard all of this throughout your lifetime but I feel the need to reiterate it due to what you will see shortly. Humans arrived on the galactic scene a couple of centuries ago and ever since then have been an average species in our great federation, not the strongest, nor the most intelligent, no, Humanity simply exists in most aspects of life.” At this point they reach around the midway point where banners from Terra, the Humans homeworld are flown along with a statue, Krlinn stops them both and walks to the statue before looking his son in the eye. “But Son, do not be mistaken when you look a Human in the eye and see nothing but steely resolve looking back at you. Know in your deepest hearts that something somewhere should be terrified.” At this point Gwzuc looks confused at the statue, it appears to be a human male wearing firefighting gear he looks at the plaque in front of the statue which reads
“Dedicated to the brave men and woman, firefighters, police, and EMT’s who lost their lives while helping the citizens of Demila during the war, costing many of their own lives but saving countless others in the process.”
“But I don’t get it. Why die for others instead of saving themselves?” Gwzuc said quite frankly while looking at his father.
Krlinn sighed, the question being poised one he was expecting but was still hoping to all together avoid. “That question is what we are here to answer today. Humans are unique in the federation, most species have an instinct for self preservation, our many cultures only serve to reinforce that instinct. For that matter the human’s have that same instinct, the difference being they can turn it off. That steely eyed look I mentioned earlier? That’s how you know if the “switch” has been flipped in a human’s head.” Krlinn brought his son up to start the walk back down to get to the exhibit that was their goal. In the meantime he could see Gwzuc’s coils phasing in his head as he was slowly starting to understand why his father never talked about his experiences in the war.
“You know son, the humans almost never made it to front line combat units” Krlinn said to his son. His son looked at him surprised and asked “How? They make up almost half the Federation’s forces!” Krlinn replied “That came about partially because of the event’s here. For all the Federation’s upsides it’s bureaucracy is not one, most saw the humans lack of specialization and failure to excel at any one thing to mean that they were useless. While most humans in the Forces were relegated to backline support and logistics, or medical staff there were always a few every infantry company did see at least a few. Hell, one of the member’s on my headquarter’s staff was human.”
There was a long minute of silence following this, Gwzuc looked at his father who had the eyes of a person looking into the past remembering something Gwzuc knew better than to interrupt him when he got like this, after a minute they were at the front of the exhibit.
They had walked into a large hall with statues every 20 yards or so, while they hadn’t encountered anybody on the way to the hall due to them taking the non speed assisted path the hall was filled with people, while all species appeared to be represented it stood out to Gwzuc that the majority was of Humans which he thought odd, until he remembered what his father had told him. That this was a Holiday for the human’s one a day to remember and mourn those who had fallen.
“We could spend all day here looking at every memorial, but instead I want to focus on the Men and Women I personally knew and served with who helped me and others survive.” Krlinn said to his son, bringing him to the first statue, again without needing more than a second to gather his surroundings.
The first statue they came upon was of a woman saluting, the almost bronze statue was so detailed he could see the wrinkles around her eyes, evidently the picture this was molded after was taken of her facing that system's star. Krlinn tells Gwzuc “I will let the plaques do the talking, I didn't know the private well enough to add more information.” Gwzuc walked forward and saw two plaques starting with the one on the left having more and larger writing
“Here lies a remembrance to Private Livia Morrison, a medic who in the battle of Demilia at great risk to her own life ran across a battlefield in an effort to save two marines who were severely injured by an artillery shell. She ran over 300 meters while being actively engaged by combatants to reach the marines. At which point she provided life saving assistance and stabilized them. However after finishing her duties she heard cries coming from a short distance and while moving to provide them care she was hit by an artillery shell. Her bio-metric suit and helmet recorded her last words as “Get those Marines home” before shortly passing away from blood loss.” Gwzuc’s hearts were beating slightly just reading that, not imaging he could ever do something so dangerous. The second plaque seemed to be for information “Private Morrision received a battalion commendation for her heroic efforts. We thank her family for allowing her likeness to be used. It should be noted Morrision had only been stationed on Demila for two weeks when the attack began, it was her first posting out of training and her only.”
Krlinn quickly brought his son to another statue giving him barely enough time to absorb what he read before his father began to speak “This is Sergeant Rhett Dunlap, while I would not have considered us friends due to a myriad of reasons he was a good man, from what I hear those whose lives he saved donated the cost to get this statue built.” Gwzuc took a good look at the statue. It showed a short human male who one would call diminutive if not for the fact that his muscles made him look extremely stocky. The statue showed him in a kneeling position with a light machine gun in one hand, the other arm missing below the elbow, his uniform tattered and shrapnel sticking in all parts of him. Gwzuc started to read the quite long plaque
“Here lies Sergeant Dunlap depicted by request of his brothers in arms to show his final moments. The Sergeant was severely injured in an artillery blast resulting in his arm being blown off. It is noted when asked about it he told his superiors “Just a flesh wound” before laughing, A few moments later the imperials began another push and the Federation had to fall back or be enveloped. The Sergeant then picked up a machine gun and hoisted it onto a nearby wall before telling his platoon leader that he would cover the retreat. His platoon leader accepted, seeing no alternative. The Sergeant proceeded to hold off imperial forces single handedly for over 4 minutes resolution in his platoon making a full retreat with no casualties. For this Sergeant Dunlap was awarded a Titanium Novastar”
Krlinn put a hand on his son’s shoulder after seeing Gwzuc finish reading, startling his boy. His father spoke in an uncharacteristically quiet voice “I saw it you know. His final stand, we had a drone in the area to make sure the retreat went as smoothly as possible. He wouldn’t, couldn’t stop. Even when he ran out of ammo he pulled his knife out and used it. When we finally took that sector back his corpse was surrounded by imperial bodies. I shudder to imagine what he could have achieved without already being injured.” Come son there’s one more statue you need to see.
With that Krlinn brings his son to the final statue, which was also the largest and in place of honor in the middle of the room, it was a simple statue similar to the first one they went to showing a tall but skinny human male saluting, due to others in the room they must wait for a handful of minutes before being able to read this statue's plaque. This appears to be the only statue with an accompanying piece on display, it appears to be a name tag ripped off a military uniform that says “Saunders”. The entire wait, Gwzuc noticed his father had not said a word and appeared to be in his own world. Gwzuc read the plaque
“Here Lies lieutenant Caleb Saunders dubbed by many as “The Savior of Demila” whose actions caused a total rout of the Imperial forces on the planet during the Battle of Demila. While Federation forces were in a near collapse the lieutenant grabbed a targeting sensor and spent 12 hours sneaking into an Imperial Ammo facility in an effort to place the sensor in a way to be able to bring artillery accurately onto imperial lines from far off batteries. Helmet footage that was being transmitted to base showed that in the process of activating the sensors a patrol of Imperials found him. Instead of engaging the sensor and retreating he valiantly activated it while receiving multiple injuries, allowing said artillery to destroy the facility and cause a chain reaction destroying a large number of Imperial Assets at the cost of the Lieutenant’s life.”
Gwzuc quickly moved onto the second plaque his two hearts racing, a thought forming in his mind. “This statue was paid for and commissioned by the Federal Armed Forces. For them we thank the ability to remember Lieutenant Saunders. For his actions Saunders was awarded a Federation Star of the People, The federation’s highest military honor. We also thank Captain Krlinn Vol'jin for donating Saunders name tag. It is said he ripped it off before allowing Saunders to attempt the mission in an effort to ensure his sacrifice would not be forgotten.”
After reading the last sentence everything fell into place for Gwzuc who turned to his father, however before he could get a word out his father said “Some of the human’s have a term for this type of thing you know? That’s how damn common it is for them. They call it “Broken Arrow.”” His father motions his son to step away so others could read the plaque Gwzuc witnesses a sight so rare he forgot it possible his father was in tears. Full blown tears “Caleb was a damn good man you know. Had a wife and daughter, he was going to engineering school on the side, he had every reason to live. That’s how I learned about the human’s now famous look. That was the first time I saw it, you know? We were trying to set up a final line of defense, something, anything to slow the imperials down, buy time for civilians to evacuate, reinforcements to show, hell just praying anything would happen other than our deaths. All looked hopeless, we were in a staff planning meeting. When someone pointed out how close the ammo dump was to their motor pool. A glaring oversight but one an overconfident enemy makes. Saunders had made a comment that was true, if we could get one of our Targeting sensors on the building we could call in a strike to blow it up. The atmosphere and jamming made anything but direct positional targeting impossible, the device had to physically be at a location to be used. It made bombing near impossible for us and they knew it. Sadly we had no explosives to make use of.” Krlinn at this point took a minute to compose himself and finish his story. “We all agreed it would work, but no one would risk their lives like that, it just wasn’t done. Caleb finally said he would do it, I didn’t believe him however seeing the other human’s heorices I should have, and said ok to the plan thinking it was just bravado and he would back out. He just prepared his pack and sensor so I saw him off. When I saw that look in his eye, that look that meant he already knew he was dead and just waiting for it to happen, I thought for just a minute, maybe just maybe he would go through with it, so I took his nametag and sent him on his way. Not putting much stock into it succeeding goddess not even watching his helmet cam, that was until he broke comm discipline and his comm burst with the sound of gunshots and screams, until finally all he said with a grunt was “Standy for target acquisition”. Following that was one giant fireball a few minutes later…” Krlinn looked at his son after giving his son a minute to understand and absorb all of the information he was given. He felt guilty about being annoyed at his dad for taking out of school. After a while all he said was “I’m sorry” before they began to walk back down the hall, Gwzuc looking at every human present through a new lens, partially in awe, partially in fear of what they are capable of.
On the treadmill-like walkway back he heard his father say to himself a poem, but for the first time listening to the words and truly taking their meaning in.
“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
His father finished his almost mechanical repeating of the poem before saying to his son “Human’s won’t throw their lives away, but they will sacrifice them if needed”

2023.06.05 04:03 Queen_Bananas I have a warrant for my arrest for a fine I had no knowledge of - what do I do now?

I own a rental property in a neighboring state. It’s a small duplex. We had some bad storms and some shingles blew off and one of our tenants had a leak on one side. My husband works for a roofing company and was able to obtain the shingles and supplies we needed for free. He’s also good friends with many roofers as he works with them on a daily basis and a couple of them offered to help him out with the roof for under $1000.
We checked before we started and found that no building permit was required as the cost was under $1000. This happened on 05/08/23.
My husband got stuck on a job and wasn’t able to get to the house at the time he had planned so his friends got started without him. Not too long after they started I got a call from my husband that the city had come by and asked to see their permit and told them to stop working when they didn’t have one. He asked me to go over and talk to the city and try to get it sorted out.
This went nowhere. The lady at the city wouldn’t even talk to me. She said the roofer had to get the building permit. I tried to explain there was no roofer and I was the home owner but we just kept going in circles. Frustrated, I left and called my husband. He called and talked to the sheriff and explained the situation to him. The sheriff told him that they just need something to show that it’s under $1000 so have something written up from his work and bring it in and it’s no problem.
So I go get the bill, I go back to the city building. I do exactly what the sheriff told my husband. Except now the mayor is there and he starts SCREAMING at me. “No! I don’t care what anyone told you or your husband! This is my city and that’s not what our ordinance is! You need a contractors license and workers comp and a building permit!” I mean, this man became immediately nasty. (Btw, I’m holding a baby in my arms through this whole ordeal)
I was nearly in tears but I yelled right back at him. We went back and forth for a minute and wasn’t very nice but it calmed down at the end but no solution was met.
FFW to today. We evicted our tenants on one side and went to check the place out today. Sitting inside the apartment is an unopened letter with my name on it. It’s a warrant for my arrest for building permits, applications, fees. I was never notified about a fine or a court date or anything. The city is well aware this is a rental property and I don’t live there. What do I do now? Should I get a lawyer?

POV: Mavis
They were deep into the game when Mavis glanced at the black sky between the open blinds. The screen was suddenly so bright in the dark room, and her muscles ached when she stretched around the controller.
Her legs swung off the end of the bed as she tilted the controller. At some point, they switched places. Mavis looked at Zed, his glassy eyes frozen over and his tongue stuck out halfway in intense concentration.
She stifled a laugh.
Mavis had never seen anyone that deep in the zone, ever. It was inspiring.
“I have to pee,” Zed announced.
He stood and left the room, leaving the door cracked so the hall light came in. Mavis massaged her hands, then looked down at the controller in her lap. Everything about staying over was so natural. Zed didn’t seem put off by her either.
She was about to push her luck.
The toilet flushed and a minute later he walked back into the room.
“So, I was wondering if I could stay for the night,” Mavis said.
His impassive expression didn’t change in the slightest. She took a breath to go into a diatribe about moving and that her mattress wasn’t ready yet, that the couch had springs sticking out in awkward places and it was impossible to sleep.
“Okay,” he said.
Her breath deflated.
“Well, that was easy,” she said, half-jokingly.
Zed huffed, a laugh, Mavis realized. He sat next to her on the bed and picked up the other controller.
“Let’s continue our game,” Zed said.
“Actually, I think I’m good,” she said.
He shrugged.
Zed exited the game and played Forza Horizon instead.
After some time, Mavis braved the question that she’d been waiting to ask.
“Zed, are you doing anything this weekend?”
He was completely unfazed for a moment, and she thought that he hadn’t heard her.
“I’m going to my dad’s. It’s his birthday. Do you want to go?”
That was almost too easy.
Mavis was momentarily stunned.
“Yes,” she said.
Zed broke his focus from the screen and looked at her.
“Really? It’s going to be boring as hell. I need someone to talk to,” he said.
Zed clutched the controller a bit tighter.
Mavis didn’t know how to respond.
“Yes,” she said again.
He turned his eyes back to the screen, right as he ran into a tree in the middle of a field.
Later that night he slumped over onto her shoulder, dead to the world. Of course, only in a figurative sense, as Mavis would never hurt a blond hair on this angel’s head.
Every minute with him made her feel as close to a normal human being that she could ever possibly be. He made her laugh, made her forget that she could never be discovered. They both loved to drive fast.
She looked at his expression longingly, so beautiful when it was wiped of worry. His red buttondown rode up to expose a white underbelly like a fish, his skin so soft and if she could touch…
Her nose flared as the thought made her boil with pleasure, but she put it away before she thought of things she would regret.
Mavis could see that something was wrong, earlier, but she would take care of that.
That morning she was in his house, unbeknownst to him, before he left for work. From under his bed, Mavis overheard his conversation with his dad about the party they were having. There was an attendee who she was especially interested in meeting, one whose address she attained from Collins’ contact list.
He went by the name of SpinTop. God knew why. Anyone could grab his real moniker the second they saw that his face was plastered right there. He had dark brown hair that was really a rather unconvincing toupee, and a very distinct bump on the bridge of his nose.
She had followed the address to an unassuming house halfway back to the city, one of those bland McMansions that blend with the rest of the cookie-cutter homes where people go to rot in quiet suburbia.
There had been no one home that day, but there lived a man who threatened Collins in recent texts to make the killings look like accidents, or he would be next. But why? She had to know. Especially since this man just so happened to be close to Zed’s parents.
Mavis slipped off of the bed and made herself home on the couch.
The next morning they carpooled to work. His car unlocked with a couple of quick, short clicks and he slid into the passenger’s side.
“Did I ever say that I wanted to take it for a ride or did you read my mind about that?” she laughed, then snorted at the end.
Zed gave her an amused smile.
Her heart could have broken ribs.
“I think you told me, but I’m not sure,” he answered.
“Oh well. Let’s ride,” she said.
Mavis revved the engine. They took off down the long stretch of road. She didn’t care for how different it was from the city. The dull, empty fields of green raced by with hardly a thing in between. How much longer until the flowers bored her?
Mavis did not plan this through.
She turned the radio up slightly.
“Another victim found dead on the freeway Mike-”
The radio buzzed and crackled as Mavis quickly flipped the channel.
Electric Love by Børns drowned out the static, for the most part. The signal out here was abysmal.
“What do you like to listen to?” Mavis asked.
Zed turned a little red at the question.
“This is fine,” he said.
She grinned.
“Okay.”
Mavis had time to figure out what his favorite music was. Then she could take him back to the city with her, and they could hopefully get some better reception. Erica was sitting in her car when they pulled up next to her, with a peculiar expression as she stared at her phone.
The window was rolled down and so Zed greeted her with a hello.
“Hey,” Erica replied distantly.
She put her phone in her purse fast and stepped out of the car. Erica pushed up her glasses and gave them both a strange smile.
“I see you’re carpooling now,” she observed.
Zed shrugged.
Mavis gave her a nearly predatory grin.
“Maybe we could go for a ride sometime.”
Erica coughed.
“Well, that sounds good with all that’s…going on.”
Her hand waved in an airy manner.
Zed was a still statue, a million miles away.
He snapped back to life as Mavis looked at him.
“I’ll see you later, Mavis. Thanks for the ride,” he said.
“Yeah,” she said.
Mavis curled a lip as they walked together.
Why couldn’t she work in the same room with him? Why did it have to be Erica digging through bodies? Whatever. She still got to ride with him. Mavis made a smug humph and made her way to the morgue. It was right across from the pathology lab so it wasn’t a long walk away.
The typical clatter and chaos filled the space in which she thrived. Mavis had bigger plans, but this place would get her through the mundanity for now just fine. As she walked down to her room, she spotted two officers, one that she had met. Gram? Gramins?
The other was fat and tan with soft brown eyes.
They dipped their heads as she approached.
Mavis corked a brow.
“Hello,” she said.
“You’re Ms. Buckley, correct ma’am?” Stewart said.
Mavis looked between them awkwardly.
“Am I in trouble?”
The other laughed.
“No, but we do have a few questions,” she said.
Grant, that was her name. Her voice jogged something in Mavis. She dipped into a state of eerie calm, something which was honed over the years until Zed came along. She didn’t sweat a drop around these two, however.
Mavis hummed and conjured an easy smile.
“Yes sir, yes ma’am.”
They walked back up the stairs to a patrol car.
“Now what is all this? Am I under arrest?” she asked, affecting a high, squeaky voice as though she were alarmed.
Mavis was, deep down, but the emotion did not come through the thick walls in her mind should she need to find a clear exit out. It would be a real bummer if she missed the party because they found her out.
“Ma’am, we are questioning everyone who has come into contact with Sir Buck Collins. We have grounds to suspect that he was involved in a recent homicide,” Stewart said.
The man began to take on the same stoney appearance that Zed had, totally spaced out, as if he were in a Vietnam flashback.
They, Mavis concluded, had seen something that she wasn’t aware of. Yet they didn’t suspect her. Mavis was now truly at ease with them. In fact, this was quite the advantageous position. Collins was dead and he’d be pinned for her recent activities.
This was perfection.
She held down a grin, pleased inside like the cat that ate the canary.
Mavis got into the back of the car, the other two up front. They drove the short distance in silence to the police station.

Sometimes I read that moonlight is cold. I’ve never felt that way—how could reflections of the sun chill? I feel at home under the comforting rays, providing light and the slightest kiss of heat in the night—the actual coolness comes from the dark, not the light.
When I take my skiff out at night, ostensibly to catch the squid that rise to the surface in the warm waters, I sit with my bare feet in the ocean, surrounded by the splashes of green and blue bioluminescent waves. I stare up at the night sky, the hint of galaxies, the shine of stars, and our most precious moon beaming down to me while the wind caresses my face through my forlorn attempt at a beard.
The peace can be easily shattered by thinking about who gazes up at me from below, but I have safeguards in place that keep the panic at bay. They can’t (or maybe won’t) sink my boat, especially since I’ve loaded it with several barrels of crude oil. They can’t drag me down to learn their secrets again, as I have chained myself to the boat. Dismemberment is the only way without a key to the lock I have installed.
They won’t dismember me—they want to keep me whole, in a sense of the word. They love you and me in their own way, but they lack boundaries, so it is up to us to enforce them. You see, they don’t need to drag us down to teach us—they are perfectly capable of approaching their students.
The swell of the ocean, detected by my feet in the water and the slow rise of my skiff signals this very truth. I do not look away from the moon, do not need to, for I know what my teacher looks like. I do not desire to look at their body again, though their beauty grows in my mind. A forbidden relationship anyways, between a teacher and student.
My teacher slides into my boat from the side, and I feel them sidle up to me from behind, feel their cool breath on the back of my head, their smooth, tantalizingly silky flesh pressing and wriggling on my spine. The moon begins to move, and I know that it is time to close my eyes and listen to my teacher.
If you were to be on the other side of my skiff, facing away from me and my teacher, you would only hear the waves smoothly lapping the boat, the soft summer breeze tousling the windsock in flaps of cloth. You would feel the boat lift, then sink until it seemed the ocean would come pouring over the sides. You might feel something exploring, perhaps soft breath on your neck, and you would not dare to open your eyes.
The Scholar would then speak to you, should you care to listen.
I listen to them every night. They tell me of where they came from, the love for us that brought them here, and their current musings on humanity. They speak too of the other creatures they love—the fish, the whales, the crustaceans, the sponges and corals, and they give the gift of understanding what it is to be a different creature.
Tonight, I am a brain coral, growing with my siblings as the water around me grows warmer and warmer until I vomit out the creatures that sustain me and I slowly die of starvation, the vibrant colors of my kin bleaching in front of me as they too fall victim to the pressing heat of the ocean around us.
It doesn’t feel fair.
The Scholar returns me to my body, and I open my eyes to stare up at the moon, which weeps salty tears that drop on my face, intermingling with my own. The scholar asks me a question, the same one they ask every night—“PLEASE, WILL YOU HELP ME SAVE ALL OF YOU?”
The unspoken part of the question is this—will you give yourself wholly to us? Will you let us save those who saved us from solitude in the cosmos?
I never answer, for I know if I spoke I would say yes, and hand the Scholar the key I keep on a chain around my neck, and they would cradle me as they slowly pulled me beneath the waves, until the stars faded from view and all that remains is the moon, shining above and beaming an unconditional love down on me.
I don’t know what would happen next. I did say yes once, when I was younger, but I reneged and the moon winked out above me. I swam to the surface with burning lungs and a deep fear, and a deeper sense of grief in my heart.
The Scholar loves us, but I do not know if I am the correct vessel for them to show all of us this fundamental truth.
Perhaps someone else will take a skiff out in the dark night, and wait to see the moon appear above them. Perhaps I will leave my chains loose—I tell myself for comfort, but down deep I know better.
The Scholar loves us—all of us—and who am I to stop them from sharing it with all of you? So I am writing this, and sharing it.
Now that you know of them, they likewise know of and can find you. Perhaps some of you, even just one singular brave soul, can find the courage to do what this coward cannot—accept an unconditional love that will change you, inside and out.

Hey! So I’m based in the UK, my Seb derm is getting progressively worse and my hair is getting thinner and thinner as time goes on.. seriously need some decent products! I have tried head & shoulders, I have tried T-Gel but non of these work long term..
General daily moisturising and cleansing my face with a garnier charcoal scrub seems to be keeping my Seb derm at bay (although the dead skin is still there if I rub my face, it just comes off and doesn’t flake though)

What time is a good time to downgrade the Amex platinum or maybe ask for a retention offer? I am reaching 12 months of my time spent with the card and the AF should hit in a few weeks. I’m definitely planning to downgrade only after the annual fee hits, I’ve heard they claw back points if you do it before that. So does anyone have any experiences with downgrades? I definitely use the perks of the platinum, but I don’t value them as much as the gold for my daily drive, and moreover I’m not going to travel this year the way I did last year. I also recently got interested with the chase ecosystem and upgraded my CSP to a CSR. So while I enjoy my gold card and maybe the green card, I don’t see a lot of worth in the platinum considering I already have a premium travel card that gives me easier to use credits and perks.
When is a good time to safely downgrade or ask for a retention offer? Should I keep the card for another year, or decide once the AF hits? I’ll probably downgrade this to another gold considering I do value the Uber and Food credit a lot as it’s easy to use.

New version of the Bullet Bags! Inspired by a custom order request. New design has 2 loops of webbing and 2 D rings on one end to attach to my belt clips or a carabiner to hang off your belt or pack or any gear. 3 inch by 1.5 inch field of loop for patches. Offering 2 sizes for handguns and rifle caliber bullets. Little guy holds atleast 300 bullets and could hold more but not certain how much more weight it can hold I haven’t tested more than 200 9mm rounds. I double stitched every seam and triple stitched on some so it should hold a good heavy load but not tested much. Available in Multicam Black, Woodland, MC Tropic, Ranger Green, Coyote, Flecktarn, Alpine Snow, Scorpion Ocp and Black. Vietnam Tiger Stripe will be back in next week. Currently only have the three patch variations shown in the picture 9mm, 556, and ''Freedom Seeds''. Each bag will come with one patch of your choice.
