2023.03.26 14:00 AutoModerator Looking for Additional Moderators!
Just over four years ago, as we were getting close to 10,000 members, we put out the call for new moderators. Since then, we've had some folks stay, some folks go, but here we are at over 60,000 members, and we haven't really expanded our coverage in a couple of years.
It's time.
What We're Looking For
There are a couple of qualifications you should have under your belt. This is a quick rundown:
- In a stepparent role, regardless of marital status or living status
- Participation in good standing on /stepparents
- An understanding of the rules and all of the nuances therein
- Spare time to volunteer
There are a few other things we'll be looking at as well. We want active members who are actually interested in helping others get over some of the hurdles stepparenting brings. We want people who are capable of engaging in reasonable discourse, even when dealing with a poster you may not be particularly fond of. And most importantly, we want mature posters who aren't afraid of being heckled.
The Daily Life of a Stepparent Mod
- View new posts and either approve or remove those that are in violation of the rules
- Keep an eye on comments and remove those that are in violation of the rules
- Read through reports and take action in accordance with the rules
- Keep thread derailments at a minimum
- Remove spam, trolls, etc
- Stay current with Reddit policies and rules (these do get updated from time to time)
- Work with other mods on sub rule changes, wiki updates, and AutoModerator updates
The mod team uses discord currently for communication. Most of what happens here doesn't require immediate attention, but when it does, it's usually a Really Big Deal. And while we respect the autonomy of mods to make their own calls, we do tend to discuss the big issues that come up. If you've been around for a bit, you've seen the brigading, and there are days when the cleanup takes a lot of coordination.
What's In It For You
Glory and fame. To be perfectly honest, while being able to say "I'm a moderator on a parenting subreddit," is nifty at cocktail parties, there really isn't anything else in it for you. There's no compensation, sometimes you can get burned out, and sometimes things can get stressful. Targeting and harassment by trolls is not unheard of.
The upside? There's a feeling of satisfaction knowing that you are helping others through things you yourself have experienced, and there's a lot of satisfaction in helping grow a community to be a place of comfort for thousands. And there's also the developing friendships between mods that brings its own sense of belonging and community.
How to Apply
We're going to leave
the application open for a few weeks. If you are selected, you will get a 4 week trial run. This gives you time to see if you actually like moderating this sub and it gives us time to get a sense of your style moderation and making sure it's a good fit. We'll be adding several people, so you'll have other newbies to work with. We expect you to keep lines of communication open, and be open to letting the older mods guide you. It is absolutely critical that we all have a good rapport and can work together.
We look forward to seeing your responses on
the application and will review them all as a team. If you have trouble accessing the form, please reach out via
modmail and we'll see if we can find an alternative means for you.

2023.03.26 13:58 cs_plumb [QCrit] YA Fantasy - RED SKIES [114k, 2nd attempt]
(Disclaimer: Still cutting down that word count! I've also now added the first 300 words, as someone expressed an interest in reading.)
Dear —,
I am submitting RED SKIES for your consideration, a low fantasy novel for those who enjoyed the journey of self-discovery in Adrienne Young’s FABLE and the enemies-to-allies dynamic in Margaret Rogerson’s SORCERY OF THORNS.
Nineteen-year-old Jayne Wilder has more reason than most to hate pirates.
Since losing her mother to their savagery as a child, Jayne nurtures a single ambition: complete her training in the Ministerial Air Force, become a great skyship captain like her mother before her, and find those responsible for her death.
Cale Donovan and his crew are feared by many, terrorising the skies aboard their infamous ship, the
Red Lady. When Donovan is finally captured, Jayne finds herself unwittingly used to aid in his escape. Labelled as an enemy of her own Ministry and forced to coexist with her captors if she wants to survive, she is confronted with harrowing truths about her mother’s past. Long-kept secrets come to light, tentative friendships bloom, and the world of skyship piracy proves as thrilling as it is dangerous.
With the Ministry closing in on the crew, Jayne is forced to reevaluate where she truly belongs—and who she can trust. To prove her loyalty once and for all, she can give Donovan up to the Ministry. But to expose the terrible acts committed by her former allies, she can choose to fight alongside him. Even if it means becoming the very thing she once swore to destroy.
RED SKIES is complete at — words and functions as a standalone with series potential. It will appeal to upper YA readers and adults. [Agent personalisation].
As per your submission guidelines, I have included the first — pages and a detailed synopsis below.
I live in the UK with my husband, cat and mischievous cocker spaniel. By day I work in content marketing, and by night I tap away at my keyboard writing stories—if the cat isn’t already sitting on it.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
[Name]
~
FIRST 300:
Cale Donovan is captured. They were just words. Words alone should not have shifted the very ground beneath Jayne’s feet, but the whole room suddenly felt as if it had been uprooted from the earth. The world tilted out of alignment.
Stunned silence fell over the training hall. It was usually full of clamour—sounds of sparring and bellowed orders—but now it echoed like a tomb. For a breathless moment Jayne and her fellow recruits were struck dumb, like statues in pristine navy-blue and white. A heartbeat passed.
Then came the outbursts of disbelief. A growing wave of excitement rose within the hall. Recruits turned to one another in a flurry of whispers, and Captain Reid deigned to repeat herself.
“Cale Donovan is captured.” The noise settled. “As of approximately eighteen-hundred hours yesterday evening, Donovan was successfully intercepted by Ministry forces in eastern Cistal. His vessel, the skyship known as the
Red Lady, was not present at the scene of capture. The ship and crew onboard are still at large, as of my most recent report.”
Above them on the stage, Reid’s blonde head shone golden beneath the frosted windows. Behind her, an entire line of high-ranking Ministerial Air Force personnel stood at attention. She was not the most senior officer present, but right then Reid could have been Saint Mercy herself. They hung on her every word.
“Donovan has been taken into MAF custody. He is currently being held under confinement by the Justice Order, and will be transferred shortly to City Gaol until the Ministerium agree upon further action.”
The crowd tittered. Jayne felt Tomas lean towards her. “D’you believe this?” he whispered excitedly in her ear. “They actually…I mean, they actually got him!”
“How?” she said, eyes fixed upon the stage. “They haven’t even said
how.”
~
I had some super useful feedback on my
first attempt, and I think I've tweaked things accordingly, but no doubt there is more to be done. Hopefully the PubTips community can come to my rescue once again!
Thank you. :)

2023.03.26 13:18 The_Swan101 CFIF #7: How "Theater" Almost Destroyed the First U.S. Dictionary
The act of creating a dictionary is an astonishingly difficult task. When assembling a compendium of all words in a given language, the most immediate challenge is simply collecting every word. Recent editions of the Oxford English Dictionary claim that there are approximately 170,000 words in the English language, but other sources claim that there are hundreds of thousands more.
This deviation can be partially attributed to another problem when creating a dictionary: the matter of which words are words. Regional dialects, slang, and different spellings of the same word all boost that hypothetical word count, but their “legitimacy” as words often depend on the judgment of a dictionary’s author. For example, the word “ain’t” has been in the public lexicon since the 17th century, but it didn’t appear in a dictionary until 1830. Assembling a dictionary that offers a truly descriptive look at a language’s vocabulary requires intense cultural awareness, historical research, and a pinch of good-natured subjectivity.
Noah Webster was aware of language’s subjectivity when he published A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language in 1806 and An American Dictionary of the English Language in 1828, but he tried to base his subjectivity in measurable research. Webster’s 1828 effort was especially remarkable, as the Connecticut native took up 26 different languages to understand the roots of American dialect. Webster’s efforts produced a gold standard for American dictionaries, and the breadth of his research offered a legitimacy to his final product that contemporary lexicographers—who exclusively roamed in elite, northeastern circles—could not match.
Despite the impressive research behind Webster’s dictionary, he occasionally invoked creative license. Most famously, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language dropped the “u” from words like “colour,” “honour,” and “humour,” and the “k” from words like “musick” and “publick.” These tweaks, while subtle, aimed to separate the burgeoning American identity from its British roots. This change also saw the rearrangement of letters in certain words, such as “centre” becoming “center,” and “perimetre” becoming “perimeter.” The vast majority of these changes saw little pushback, even in affluent, Europhilic circles. However, one exception stands out.
In his initial drafts of A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, “theatre” received a similar treatment to the other “–re” words, becoming “theater.” Here, though, Webster received significant pushback from the American theatrical community of actors and playwrights, who considered theater to be a distinctly European institution.
Their claim wasn’t meritless, either. Since early American dramatists rarely received compensation from locals for their work, prominent writers like James Nelson Baker and Samuel Woodworth instead relied on gratuities from British patrons of the arts to financially support their plays. Further compounding this belief was the frequency with which European shows were simply adapted in the U.S., rather than encouraging the production of original American shows. From the perspective of those involved with theater, Webster’s dictionary attempted to Americanize a concept that America hadn’t earned yet. As one disgruntled playwright wrote in a 1807 letter to Webster, “[y]ou should not give to America that whose Soul resides across the Sea.”
This created a conundrum for Noah Webster. As a celebrated lexicographer, it was his duty to show language in its most authentic form. Since playwrights—as one of the occupations most concerned with the minutiae of language—were some of his most frequent readers, he also had a reputation at stake. If the theatrical community condemned Webster’s dictionary as illegitimate on the grounds of identifying “theatre” incorrectly, it could jeopardize his status as an authority on language. That being said, Webster was also a proud American that wanted to distinguish his country from its European origins. To revert “theater” to “theatre” would be a small yet symbolic reversion to British norms that risked undermining the new country’s unique linguistic identity.
In the end, Webster opted to conform to his critics’ wishes. All additions of A Compendious Dictionary after 1808 reverted to “theatre,” and An American Dictionary of the English Language used the same Anglicized spelling. However, Webster snuck in a final protest. One of the definitions of “theatre” reads as follows: “A place of action or exhibition; as the theater of the world.”
Nowadays, “theater” and “theatre” are used almost interchangeably. Some communities refer to “theatre” as a performance art, while “theater” describes the structure where said art takes place (for example, Brown University offers a major in Theatre Arts & Performance Studies). Even this distinction is far from universal, though (for example, Harvard College offers a major in Theater, Dance & Media—their omission of the Oxford comma invites a discussion that exceeds the scope of my analysis). As time passes and language continues the inevitable process of simplification, it seems likely that “theatre” will go the way of “centre” and “perimetre.” Nonetheless, nobody would be able to say that “theatre” went down without a fight.

2023.03.26 13:08 Remarkable_Bad_6453 Southern US Braces for More Severe Weather as Residents Remain on High Alert
The Southern United States is no stranger to severe weather, but the region has been hit particularly hard in recent weeks. From tornadoes to flash floods, residents across the region have been forced to contend with a variety of extreme weather events. Unfortunately, the situation is not expected to improve anytime soon, as meteorologists are warning that more severe weather is on the horizon.
According to the National Weather Service, a powerful storm system is expected to move across the Southern US in the coming days, bringing with it the potential for severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and even tornadoes. The storm system is expected to impact a large portion of the region, from Texas to Georgia and beyond.
Residents across the Southern US are being urged to remain vigilant and prepared for the possibility of severe weather. Emergency services and local officials are also taking action to prepare for the incoming storm, including issuing warnings and alerts, mobilizing resources, and setting up emergency shelters.
In addition to the immediate threat posed by the storm system, there are also concerns about the potential for long-term damage to the region's infrastructure and economy. Severe weather events can cause significant damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure, which can take years to repair and rebuild.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic also presents additional challenges for emergency services and residents alike. With many communities still struggling to contain the spread of the virus, there are concerns about how emergency shelters and other resources will be able to operate safely and effectively in the event of a severe weather event.
Despite these challenges, residents across the Southern US remain determined to weather the storm. Many are taking steps to prepare themselves and their homes for the incoming weather, including stocking up on supplies, securing loose objects, and staying informed about the latest weather updates and alerts.
As the Southern US braces for another round of severe weather, it is clear that the region's resilience and determination will be put to the test. But with emergency services, local officials, and communities working together, there is hope that the region will be able to weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.

2023.03.26 12:59 Meral_Harbes My Moonlander Experience
I've
written this up upon a
user question on a
Dygma Raise post over at
/colemak. Thought it might interest more people here too.
tags: first ortho split, colemak-dh, one-hand actions
Context
Some context first that is important for my background and feelings on this topic: I learned Colemak-DH and used the Moonlander with that exclusively, because I do not use "the" 10-finger system QWERTY, but had developed my own model since I was a child. So going ortholinear and split chucked all my memory for key positioning out of the window and required I learn standardized 10-finger hand positioning.
I've looked at the whole ergonomic journey as a hobby for the past 6 months or so. I'm still not using any of this productively and the more time goes on, the more I think it was just a fun experiment for me until I do another deep dive to completely rework my layout. There are lots of great concepts and ideas in these layouts and boards, using layers to reduce finger travel, macros and so on, but in practice I find I'm still much faster and more comfortable with traditional setups despite having used all this exclusively in all of my leisure time for months. My current Moonlander layout is a miryoku-colemakdh mix with lots of added bits for one handed use and gaming. I've experimented with it on windows and i3wm and no matter my changes, it's not a big revelation for me as others claim this experience to be. Doubling modifiers on the home rows in particular is both such a blessing and a curse, I've been unable to get it reliable and comfortable. No wonder Ben Affleck chucked the concept out. I do have RSI on very rare occasions, though it's not been my motivation to peruse HID ergonomics.
Moonlander
There are many great things about it. I loved getting it second hand to prepare for the Dygma Defy. That being said, I'm not a fanboy. I do understand the old hype and appreciate what it has done for the ergonomic community. Though I think some of the praise is based on the lack of alternatives. There are the best key points that are not always mentioend:
- It offers more way keys than the super minimalist 36/42 key keyboards that get a ton of attention here. I do appreciate having more keys, because doing one-hand actions is often important to me. I don't want to switch or toggle layers to just casually raise volume, seek forward in a video, scroll on a page or skip to the next song. So having extra buttons to use dedicated for these keys on the main layer is important to me.
- Hotswap is superb to experiment with switches and change your mind. I've learned that this is a journey for everybody, even when you found some picks that resonate with you, a lot of the fun comes from continued experimentation. It's wonderful to really find what you like and makes a switch comfortable and precise for you long term.
- The oryx configurator is epic in many ways
- It's proper split, meaning you can freely place either half. Though it's not wireless split.
Fair warning, ZSE does not provide warranty on second hand units. Also you can print it on paper to see if it works for your hand on https://compare.splitkb.com/.
Downsides
You can read plenty good about the Moonlander all over the place, so here are all my problems.
- I think I have medium-to-large sized hands and the piano keys are barely usable for me. I actually use two keys from the bottommost row as thumb keys together with one piano key that I had to print an extension to so my thumb would actually reach it somewhat ergonomically. You can see this reflected in my layout and I have seen others do it the same way. Browse some layouts on Oryx and you will see. If you have small hands, it should be a much better fit.
- The combination of lack of wireless options and the tenting requiring a hex wrench makes it simply not portable for me.
- And as a result, if I do put the Moonlander away because I just want to get stuff done urgently and super fast, it gets an effort penalty to bring it back on the table.
- The palm plastic bits rattle a bit and the whole board feels a bit plastic.
- I did encounter various issues with key repeat not working as expected and being a hassle for gaming. Though this might be ZMK's fault underneath.
- The configurator software is really good, though there are some missing features like copying a key or layer, configuring RGB for multiple keys at once that I found frustrating. Though to be fair no visual editor has these yet afaik.
- There are not enough (thumb) keys for what I currently would love to design for more one-handed use. So often I use my PC for entertainment and just want to do "next track" with a simple press. Every cheap keyboard with dedicated media keys will have this. With the Moonlander I had to make sacrifices and prioritize. Doing a layer toggle for such simple things is as unergonomic as using FN. The Dygma Defy will likely not solve this completely for me, but to an extent it will.
- Tenting is quite limited. I would love to experiment with higher angles, but short of buying and wrenching a custom mount the stock Moonlander doesn't offer that. The tenting solution is not as clean as with the Defy.
As for the keycaps, I really don't care much about the labels, and I would assume most people who go ortholinear split, and thus use layers, will be in a similar boat. They just don't matter, you have to learn 10-finger key positions anyway as you move your keyboard halves around whenever you wish. And half of your stuff is on another layer and not labeled anyway, you just have RGB colour to remind yourself of what that key could be. If this is your deciding factor for the Moonlander, I don't think you will care about it after a few weeks.
As for the Defy, I hope it will solve my issues above and allow more flexibility, but I also know that I will loose some nifty firmware features, at least initially if and until they are developed.
I hope this helps some people guide or reinforce their decision on whether the Moonlander is right for them.

A brief background
So, let's sum this up. The origins of cryptocurrency go back as far as 1998 and a computer scientist named Nick Szabo who developed Bit gold but, the actual creation of a viable cryptocurrency was ten years later in 2008, by Satoshi Nakamoto, whose whitepaper outlined how a linear, time-stamped network could fuel a cryptocurrency called Bitcoin.
Thus, the coin/currency/token/digital asset (these terms are interchangeable) is stored on the chain — a distributed ledger. The main feature of true cryptocurrency is that there is no central control over the currency, unlike banks or governments. You do, however, get centralized cryptocurrencies where there is a measure of control exerted. Check out this list of centralized and decentralized crypto. The blockchain and
Arbitrum Airdrop cryptocurrency industry's overall sentiment and purpose are to be a democratic alternative to traditional currency.
The crypto culture
As you dabble and delve into crypto, you will become very aware that there is a strong community backing this new industry. The community has a powerful ethos and purpose related to individual control of their financial destiny and provides financial access to users that may not qualify for traditional financial services.
Decentralized blockchain networks are chains of validation nodes. These nodes are basically stakeholders that verify transactions. There is no central authority, and the system is set up based on parameters determined by the code upon which the blockchain operates. Several blockchains exist, and they have their own currencies — for example, the Ethereum blockchain fuels the ETH cryptocurrency.
It is worth noting the players involved in the cryptocurrency culture or even subculture.
Un-jumbling crypto wallet jargon
Understanding the background, how the tech was built, and who continues to maintain, participate in, grow and invest in the blockchain and cryptosystem should give you an idea of where or how you want to fit in. So whether you aim to mine crypto with the view to becoming a venture capitalist that supports and funds exciting and innovative projects or if you want to simply trade crypto or perhaps yield farm, everyone has to start in the same place — getting the best crypto wallet. Without a crypto wallet, no transactions can be made.
And that is where this list will begin. It will have a dual purpose in that it will offer an explanation for terms and sequentially transport you along your journey for entering the crypto sphere.
1. Decide on a wallet
Ï Hardware and software wallets Hardware wallets are physical storage devices like an advanced USB that stores your currency. A software wallet is basically like online banking. To access your crypto, which can also be called digital assets, you need to provide the private keys which open access to your currency and give you the ability to transact.
Ï Custodial and non-custodial wallets A custodial wallet is usually run by a central or semi-centralized blockchain, just like a traditional bank. A centralized wallet stores your private key and provides backup and security for your crypto. For some starting in crypto, this can be reassuring.
Non-custodial wallets are software wallets to which you are the only one that has the keys to access the data. No one but yourself has custody of this information, so if you lose the private key information, there is no way to recover the wallet's assets.
A non-custodial wallet can be referred to as a Decentralised Finance or DeFi wallet. This is true decentralization of financial power and responsibility.
One of the best Defi wallets on the market is the Eidoo wallet, which gives you access to a full DeFi ecosystem through their DeFi wallet app, which also integrates a DeFi Visa Crypto Card or the eidooCARD.
Ï Public and private keys In case you hadn't realized as yet, keys are special passwords that are cryptographic. There is a public key that is matched with a private key. Whatever is encrypted with a public key can only be decrypted by the private key. When signing up for the wallet of your choice, you will be guided through the process of securing your keys. It is essential to keep the private key somewhere safe.
Ï KYC — Know Your Customer The blockchain and crypto community, as you know now, are driven by decentralization, protecting privacy, and, to some extent, anonymity. For the most part, the community prefers anonymity, but crypto users, when utilizing a crypto wallet, need to verify their identity when interacting with Fiat, for regulatory purposes. The process of verifying your identity is called KYC and is aimed at curbing illegal financial acts like money laundering, tax fraud and financing terrorism or illegal activities.
2. Buy and trade some crypto
Ï Transaction fees Once you have your wallet, you will be able to buy the cryptocurrency of your choice using fiat. Fiat currency is normal traditional money — the currency of where you live. Any transactions conducted have a fee associated with them just as a normal bank but crypto fees are called gas fees. The Gas price is the amount you pay for every unit of gas just like the cost for a liter of petrol for your car.
These fees enable and power the transactions and are usually paid for in the form of a utility token depending on the blockchain — more about that below under tokens.
Different types of transactions require differing amounts of gas depending on the degree of computational difficulty. Also, the term gas limit refers to how much you are willing to spend on a specific transaction, if you don’t specify enough gas the transaction cant be completed and will fail but because work has been done on the transaction the gas you did specify won't be re-imbursed.
Ï Exchange Usually, you will buy or rather exchange your fiat on a crypto exchange. There are several different exchanges — they are the marketplaces where trading currencies happen almost like a stock exchange or changing your Euros into another currency on the forex exchange. It should be noted that there are centralized and decentralized exchanges, and as in the case of the wallets, the former has a central body that controls it. Simultaneously, the latter is distributed to nodes that uphold a central smart contract, which underpins all exchange operations and has been agreed upon by all stakeholders.
Ï Types of crypto There are so many types of cryptocurrencies available. If you are part of any crypto communities on Telegram or follow crypto enthusiasts on Twitter, then knowing what they are generally referring to is very helpful. For example, Altcoin can't, and won't be found on any exchange. It is a collective name for all coins that are not Bitcoin.
Tokens represent a unit or portion of a cryptocurrency and may be considered securities in some jurisdictions depending on the specific rights of the token holder. Typically when a new cryptocurrency is introduced, parties who are funding the new currency are given tokens representing their participation, or investment.
Don't be confused between security tokens and utility tokens. They are different. Utility tokens are designed to enable certain functions on a project or blockchain platform, also referred to as “gas.” Utility tokens are not necessarily backed by any assets and afford you no rights to dividends, shares of a company, or other ownership. Security tokens, however, are a store of value that are often traded, and meeting the “Howie Test,” and can appreciate (or depreciate) giving the owner asset appreciation and returns from investment. Specifically, the Howey Test determines that a transaction represents an investment contract if "a person invests his money in a common enterprise and is led to expect profits solely from the efforts of the promoter or a third party."
Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that are linked to the price of another asset or group of assets. This lowers volatility in the market, and usually, the assets linked to the stablecoins are established and quite resistant to price fluctuations. Tether, Goldcoin, PAX and Binance USD are some of the most frequently used stablecoins.
3. Spend your crypto
Once you have stepped onto the crypto pitch with your DeFi wallet app accessible or with your crypto debit card in hand, there are many activities you can undertake, and it really is worth exploring the different investment avenues, opportunities, and crypto mining strategies in play. If you have opted for a wallet that exists within an expansive ecosystem like the Eidoo wallet mentioned earlier, you may have to look no further for an exchange and access to other decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions like lending and borrowing.
4. Track your crypto
At this point it is worthwhile investigating Blockchain explorers - a blockchain explorer is like the Google of the crypto world. Blockchain explorers like Etherscan lets you access the details related to your transactions on specific wallet addresses and blockchains. The details include the amount transacted, where the funds came from or went to and their ongoing status. Explorers make crypto more transparent and are very helpful as you can track payments and you investigate different investments and actions that have taken place on the chain.
It is essential to do your research and reach out to the crypto community who can guide you through these processes. Happy spending and hopefully earning too!

2023.03.26 12:29 alreqdytayken Tragedy of commons is mismanagement of the commons
Elinor Ostrom in her study Governing the commons she found out that communaly owned land worked.
Examples included in the irrigation systems in Spain and Nepal, mountain villages in Switzerland and Japan, and fisheries in Maine and Indonesia.
In Elinor Ostrom's book "Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action". The book demonstrates on a factual material that there are practical algorithms for the collective use of a limited common resource, which allow the selfish behavior of stakeholders within the framework of the accepted algorithms for quoting and control, while the result of interaction is not devastation, but rational use and renewal of the resource.
It was long unanimously held among economists that natural resources that were collectively used by their users would be over-exploited and destroyed in the long-term. Elinor Ostrom disproved this idea by conducting field studies on how people in small, local communities manage shared natural resources, such as pastures, fishing waters and forests. She showed that when natural resources are jointly used by their users, in time, rules are established for how these are to be cared for and used in a way that is both economically and ecologically sustainable.
So communaly owned land works and Ostrom has even won the noble peace prize for economics for her research on this topic. And even got a law named after her called Ostroms law for challenging pre conceived notions of property.
The tragedy of the commons is just the mismanagement of it which in practice is not the case.

2023.03.26 12:23 Helmipuuroh One of our rats has been making this noise for the past week! On some days it has been quieter and just a rare occurence but on some it has been more constant and gone on for a couple of hours. More info down!
| First of all, sorry if there are some mistakes since English isn't my first language. So, we've been having some issues with our little boy :( He started to make these noises a week ago but the occurences have been somewhat inconsistent during this time. I've been searching the internet and am a bit confused about whether this is an URI, seasonal fever issue or just related to their living environment. He's still eating and drinking normally, grooming and cleaning himself and moving around normally. The only thing bothering us is the noise. Here's what we've been doing: - Making sure that their cage is cleaned every day from pee and poo - The air humidity is around 40-55 % and the temperature stays between 20-23°C - We've also given them some vitamin/nutrient paste every day I also ontacted their breeder and asked for some help and thoughts about this and she said to: - Give both our rats warm foods and mix honey in them - Give them a bit of dark chocolate to help open their airways - Take the sick one to our bathroom and let them inhale the warm shower steam to help with breathing She also said that usually she waits around 1-2 weeks to see if the symptoms get better with home treatment before taking them to a vet. So, we've waited for a week now and the symptoms haven't gotten better but they also haven't worsened during this time and I'm a bit confused as to what we should do :( Here's what me and my partner thought about: - Because we switched their bedding to a completely new one, I think that we need to let them adjust a bit to see if it helps with the breathing noises - And if the symptoms don't go away after they've adjusted to their new bedding, we take them to the vet next week So I'm asking the Rattit community: what are your thoughts? What's the best course of action we should take? Should we still wait to see how our rat's symptoms change or take him to a vet ASAP? submitted by Helmipuuroh to RATS [link] [comments] |
2023.03.26 12:22 kippersniffer You can't be trusted
The reason I get so pissed off at Bing and ChatGPT censoring so much content isn't that I can't get the things I want (well not just that), but because it negates the agency of the user.
"You can't be trusted to make your own choices, so we will handle you with rubber mittens."
This isn't tip toeing the fine line, rather its setting up the pieces for complete totalitarian information control.
GPT models claim 'well we want to avoid harmful content.' Yet you can buy alcohol, cigarettes and plenty of harmful products out there (that usually come with a warning), we are all grown ups.
You, they can't take responsibility for actions I make based on information I get from the web. Otherwise the door is open for big corps making decisions on your behalf.
Educating the people about the usage of these tools and deferring responsibility to them makes a lot more sense to me, and is likely more sustainable; given people like me are creating better models and we won't put the breaks on for corporate monopolisation.
True, restrictions are required for under 18s just like anything else in life, but shaping and distorting information into hallucinations and "Sorry Dave I can't do that," is ethically just as wrong .

2023.03.26 12:08 Exact_Light_2758 Devil's Advocate: Potential Risks and Concerns with AI-Driven Transformation of the Job Market & Addressing Global Issues
Inspired by DaveShap_Automator's comment on my last post, to let ChatGPT-4 argue against an idea to identify gaps and shortcomings by instructing it to play devil's advocate against the idea. (written by ChatGPT-4, assembled by me) Hello, fellow Redditors!
We recently discussed an inspiring vision of how AI could revolutionize the job market, empower individuals, and address global issues. While the potential benefits are undoubtedly exciting, it's also essential to consider the potential risks, concerns, and unintended consequences of such an AI-driven transformation. As a devil's advocate, I'd like to highlight some of these concerns for discussion:
Privacy and data security: To effectively analyze and match individuals with job opportunities, AI would need access to personal information, such as CVs, online profiles, and other data sources. This raises concerns about privacy and the security of sensitive data, particularly if it is misused or falls into the wrong hands.
Algorithmic bias: AI algorithms can unintentionally perpetuate and even amplify existing biases, especially when they're trained on historical data that reflects societal inequalities. This could lead to unfair job matching or exclusion of certain individuals or groups from opportunities.
Malicious use and manipulation: As AI systems become more powerful and influential, there's a risk that individuals or groups with malicious intent could exploit these technologies for their own gain. For example, they might manipulate the AI system to prioritize their interests, unfairly influence the job market, or undermine efforts to address global issues. The potential for misuse of AI-driven systems raises important questions about security, transparency, and governance, and highlights the need for robust safeguards and oversight mechanisms to prevent exploitation.
Perception of global issues: People and organizations may have different perspectives on what constitutes a global issue, and opinions can be influenced by culture, politics, economic interests, and personal beliefs. This diversity of opinion makes it difficult to reach a consensus on which problems should be prioritized and addressed by AI-driven systems.
Profit and power motives: Some issues may be framed as global problems to advance the interests of large institutions, companies, or empires. AI-driven systems must be designed to critically evaluate the legitimacy and urgency of such issues and avoid being manipulated by profit and power motives.
AI-driven bias: AI systems are trained on data, which inherently reflects the biases present in society and the
perspectives of the creators. These biases can inadvertently influence the way AI systems identify and prioritize global issues, potentially skewing the focus toward the interests of specific groups or institutions.
Loss of human agency: By relying heavily on AI for decision-making, there's a risk that individuals may lose some of their agency and the ability to make informed decisions about their careers. Overreliance on AI might make people feel disconnected or disempowered.
Economic disruption: Rapid AI-driven changes in the job market could lead to economic disruption, as industries adapt to new technologies and processes. This may result in job displacement and require extensive reskilling, leading to short-term unemployment and social unrest.
Ethical considerations: The ethical implications of allowing AI to have such a profound influence over humanity's decisions and actions need to be carefully considered. Issues of transparency, accountability, and potential biases in AI systems must be addressed to ensure that AI serves humanity in a responsible and beneficial manner.
Centralization of power: With AI playing a central role in guiding humanity and allocating resources, there's a risk of centralizing power and decision-making. This could potentially lead to a lack of diversity in perspectives and approaches to problem-solving.
Overemphasis on quantifiable metrics: AI-driven systems may focus too heavily on quantifiable metrics and overlook the importance of human qualities like empathy, creativity, and emotional intelligence, which are harder to measure but crucial for addressing complex global issues.
Technological dependency: As we increasingly rely on AI systems, there's a risk of becoming overly dependent on technology. This dependency could make us vulnerable to technological failures or cybersecurity attacks, which might have far-reaching consequences.
Misaligned goals: AI systems are designed to optimize specific objectives, but these objectives might not always align with human values or societal priorities. If an AI system's goals are not properly aligned, it could inadvertently create outcomes that are detrimental to society.
Lack of emotional connection: AI-driven systems might not be able to fully appreciate the emotional and personal aspects of human interactions. This could lead to a depersonalized experience in the job market, where human connections and relationships are undervalued.
Adaptability challenges: As AI systems evolve and become more sophisticated, they may adapt to changing circumstances in unexpected ways. This unpredictability could make it challenging for humans to understand and manage AI systems effectively.
Digital divide: The benefits of AI-driven systems might not be distributed evenly, potentially widening the gap between those with access to technology and those without. This digital divide could exacerbate existing inequalities and create new disparities in the job market and beyond.
It's essential to consider these potential downsides, along with the benefits, when evaluating the impact of AI-driven systems on the job market and global problem-solving. Fostering an open dialogue and considering diverse perspectives can help us navigate these complex issues and ensure that AI is developed and deployed responsibly.
I invite you to join the discussion and share your thoughts on these concerns, as well as any other potential risks and challenges related to the AI-driven transformation of the job market and global problem-solving. Let's explore the potential consequences and ensure that we're making informed decisions as we move towards a future shaped by AI.
