Lyrics That Made You Go “Wait, What?”
2023.06.09 15:04 mkhermanski Lyrics That Made You Go “Wait, What?”
What are some of Taylor’s lyrics that made you do a double-take?
This could mean something that was confusing or something that you didn’t understand.
My example is in Paris—
“Your ex-friend’s sister met someone at a club and he kissed her. Turns out, it was that guy you hooked up with ages ago some wannabe Z-lister…”
It took me a while to puzzle out that Taylor is quoting a friend who was relaying this story to her. This line helped: “Did you see the photos? No, I didn’t, but thanks, though.”
I saw another example from The Lakes—
“Is it romantic how all my elegies eulogize me?”
Talk about needing a poetry class. 😅
Hit me with yours!

2023.06.09 14:41 Apprehensive_Ad_1000 Gold Rush by Taylor Swift
I love this song so much. Not just because I like the way it sounds. It’s because of the lyrics. Taylor describes it as “ Which takes place inside a single daydream where you get lost in thought for a minute and then snap out of it.” It resonates with me so much as a maladaptive daydream. The verses starts with the lines “I don’t like…” which make it obviously the narrator do not want to daydream about this person but they can’t help it because “eyes like sinking ships on waters..so inviting i almost jump in”. I also love the opposite chorus..in the first chorus she sings about a life with her person and in the next chorus she realizes it will never happen because it’s a daydream. What do you guys think? Do you have a song like this that you relate to?

2023.06.09 11:50 SAUCEMASTERRRR AITA for getting annoyed at my boyfriend at a taylor swift concert ?
So me and my boyfriend went to a taylor swift concert recently and he isn’t as familiar with taylor swift’s song as I do but he enjoys screaming and vibing to her songs. I should add in that majority of the time, he gets the lyrics WRONG and sing random lyrics. I got annoyed because it was affecting my time there because it just wasnt the actual lyrics plus he was screaming it, so I told him to stop that and just pull up on google the song lyrics and sing if he wants to scream. He got mad and he told me that he is just there to enjoy and vibe with the crowd and theres nothing wrong with screaming wrong lyrics. so AITA?

2023.06.09 07:14 Squeeshytoes Songs that helped you?
Sometimes you never really know what is going to help you during a breakup. For me, I wasn't a huge Taylor Swift fan in the slightest, but for whatever reason I have Folklore a listen. And wow, I was meant to hear that album months after my breakup because it truly helped me. I was really surprised. I described it to a friend as not actually being a "breakup" album but the aftermath album after you've started the process and are healing. Also, her "Would've Could've Should've" song was like putting the wind in my sails and really helped me get over that last lingering breakup feeling. I've never related to every lyric in a song like that one. She definitely has my respect.
Any one else of have any songs that helped them?

2023.06.09 06:40 FlubbyStarfish Carolina is the superior version of No Body No Crime
If Carolina was on Folklore or Evermore, I know the song would be so much more appreciated within the framework of Folklorian mythology, than if it stayed a movie track.
I’m gonna be honest, I’ve listened to No Body No Crime maybe 10 times since Evermore’s release. It’s a fine song about a person who’s committed murder, but it’s not Taylor’s best song about a person who’s committed murder.
Carolina is so much more lyrical, clever, and poetic than No Body No Crime. And the fact that it was produced with only period-accurate instruments and recorded by Taylor in a single take, makes this song a standout in her discography. It fits right in line with songs like Cowboy Like Me and Ivy. If Carolina replaced No Body No Crime, it would transform Evermore as an album, and make it a completely skipless album for me.
Obviously we get a lot of context for the song because of the book it’s based on, but Taylor could easily add a brief description like she did for several songs in the album announcement: “A girl from the wilderness of North Carolina, whose fate intertwines with an alleged murder and the town who outcast her.”
TLDR: No Body No Crime is the glitter gel pen to Carolinas quill pen. And Evermore is such a quill pen album.

2023.06.09 05:50 catofthecanalsx I really appreciate that Taylor isn’t afraid to be cringy
I’m sappy and 🍃 rn watching TikTok’s of Taylor and something I find so endearing about her is that she is not afraid to be corny and makes no effort to be a “cool girl.” I love that she dances for every artist at award shows even when no one else is and dancing is not really her strong suit. She shows her enthusiasm and excitement and never makes an effort to play it cool. She has silly lyrics in some of her songs and cringey moments and she just owns it. I’ve always appreciated that she openly loves girly things that women typically get shamed for. Shes unapologetically a lover of baking, pretty dresses, glitter, rom coms, and cats. I’m not sure if this makes sense, but I’ve never felt like she’s trying to fit into that “hot cool girl” stereotype. Her music isn’t catered towards the male gaze she’s not trying to be palatable to men through her music.
People have discredited Taylor’s talent for so long because she writes “girly breakup songs” for teenagers and I’m so glad she’s finally getting widespread recognition for her talent. Of course she’s been insanely successful for years, but for a long time it was considered “cringey and bad taste” to like Taylor because people devalue anything girls like. Now finally people are acknowledging just how good she really is.

Listen on Spotify here Inspired by
this post about chapters in their relationship, but the OP didn't quite make sense to me, even after putting it altogether. So I've compiled my own version into that playlist linked above (except for You're Losing Me and Need... Taylor pls).
Chapter 1. Loving Him Was... - Teardrops On My Guitar
- The Way I Loved You
- Forever & Always

- Renegade (with Big Red Machine)
- The Great War
[Interlude] I Didn't Like The Ending (How Long Can We Be A Sad Song?) - exile (feat. Bon Iver)

- Coney Island (feat. The National)
Chapter 8. If One Thing Had Been Different... - hoax
- The Alcott (with The National)
- You're Losing Me
- Maroon
- Death by a Thousand Cuts
- Hits Different
- the 1
Some of my favorite connections in her songs and some reasoning on the chapters:
- I didn't put Dear John/WCS in the first chapter because I feel like that's more trauma that she's processed than how she views/deals with heartbreak in relationships
- I added songs from 1989 that I thought would frame her best to transition to her mess chapter
- "25 years old, how were you to know?" from DWOHT and "How's one to know?" in ivy - I wrote a whole thesis on it here and how it all ties with High Infidelity
- Bejeweled at the start of her "mess era" and how "a diamond's gotta shine" up till the end in Maroon with "the rubies that I gave up"
- Chapter 3 is just her being horny lol
- The songs in Ch.4 are the ones that I think address her anxiety in the relationship more, as opposed to more concrete conflicts in Ch.7
- In willow where she stresses "there was one prize I'd cheat to win" and you know she cheated to be with him
- Ch.6 I wanted some kind of transitions between Lavender Haze where she claims she doesn't want to be pressured into being his bride, to Paper Rings, to Lover (where it is obviously a wedding theme), so London Boy and Paris are between those songs
- I was considering putting ME! in Ch.6 vs Ch.7 just because of how happy it sounds, but when you look at the lyrics it's really more of "I know it's sometimes bad, but it can still be good" kind of situation, it's really bargaining - "You'll never find another like me"
- I didn't put the sad songs they wrote together as its own chapter, but instead as an interlude because... I felt like it was too short lol, and they were supposedly fiction
- In Ch.8 I kept with what Aaron said about hoax and the 1 being bookends of folklore, so it just made sense for me to keep them as is
- Ch.8 You're Losing Me vs Maroon with the "I chose you, I lost you" theme
- Ch.8, I know DBATC wasn't written with their breakup, but it still matches very well especially when you compare it with Cornelia Street: "as if the streetlights pointed in an arrowhead leading us home" vs "I ask the traffic lights if it'll be alright, they say I don't know"
Let me know what you guys think! I will update the playlist if there are comments/suggestions and when the TV of other songs have been released. Which is your favorite chapter of their relationship?

I was just thinking about the songs that I never skip when listening to Taylor on shuffle, and how some get me hyped the second I hear the first note.

2023.06.09 04:32 spicyyyhoe What are some Taylor lyrics that you think could be changed to better fit the song/your interpretation of the song?
I think every swiftie knows a few lyrics across her discography that could be changed to better fit the song itself, the story behind the song, or their interpretation of the song.
I’ll start!! I think “I knew you’d haunt all of my what-ifs” from Cardigan could be changed to “I knew you’d haunt all over my what-ifs”. The ladder would be referring to her what-ifs as a collective idea, in which the person Taylor is talking about appears periodically as reminders of what once was. On the other hand, the original lyric refers to a set of items, some of which are haunted by said person.
What are some of yours?

2023.06.09 04:14 Glittering_Laugh_958 32 [F4R] Southeast US - Today was a good day. I feel like I'm hitting my stride as a millennial white woman.
For the past ~3 years, I've been in a bit of a slump, much like everyone else. Life became super destabilized and a bit out of control. But I think I'm beginning to see a new peak on the horizon and I'm super excited and, dare I say, cautiously optimistic about the future.
Today was an especially amazing day and I really would like some more friends to share all the great things (and bad, I suppose) that seem to be happening around me. Please note that I am not currently looking for anything romantic or sexual.
Here are some random blurbs about me:
- My younger sister says that I'm on the Pisces-Aries cusp and that explains *everything* about me.
- I recently had a confirmatory autism diagnosis and that explains a few things.
- I'm otherwise extremely close with my immediate family.
- I'm also surprisingly close with my neighbors. They call me the "plant/cat lady" and I fucking love it.
- My main hobbies are straight up geriatric: quilting, birdwatching, and gardening. I also enjoy watching hockey, golf, tennis, and F1.
- I'm super involved with several local quilting, birdwatching, and gardening groups. I'm also a pretty avid supporter of my community street grocery.
- My favorite flowers: peonies, hydrangeas, gardenias, magnolias, lantana, snapdragons, orchids, ranunculus, and foxglove.
- My favorite birds: chimney swifts, common grackles, cardinals, boat tailed grackles, indigo buntings, painted buntings, purple martins, red winged blackbirds, crows, and house finches.
- My favorite ducks: wood ducks, blue winged teal, mallards, muscovies, and mandarins.
- I'm also pretty amazing in the kitchen.
- I just finished building out my front garden, including these amazing potted arrangements to attract butterflies, dragonflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Now I'm focusing on building out my back garden and I'm going for a goth girlfriend theme.

2023.06.09 04:13 harleyquinn_fabray Ranking The Significant Versions of Willow
I finally listened to the Willow remixes, and goddamn, some of them are actually fantastic. I never really got bothered because I saw them viewed as more of a meme based on how the fandom discussed them, but actually I think some of them are better than the album version as standalone songs. So I decided to rank every version of Willow I felt was significant enough to rank, considering now I've heard enough of them.
- Grammys 2020 Performance - Ranking this first may seem anticlimactic given the intro talking exclusively about the remixes, but I truly don't think anyone will fight me on saying that nothing surpasses this. The vocals were so strong, and the instrumentation feels so much more alive. It maintains that acoustic-based Evermore sound by nature of being live, while also being much more exciting to listen to than any other version. Big thumbs up.
- Willow (Moonlit Witch Version) - This is the perfect bridge between the Evermore album production style and the poppier Elvira remix. It has such a unique sound with the mix of more synth pop elements and the piano and soft vocals of the album version, and it marries very well. The added percussion also drives the song forward a lot more. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but as someone who prefers highly produced music, this really scratched an itch. It also manages to make the transition from "90s trend" into the next verse really smooth, and on a lot of versions it sounds a little stilted.
- Willow (dancing witch version) (Elvira remix) - Elvira needs to do more of these remixes, because this and Love Story were both excellent. My only real issue is that because the vocals are so soft and raw, it can sometimes feel a little at odds with the backing track. I feel like maybe some added effect on Taylor's vocals could have made it work better. But the production itself is so cool. Again, so unique, so fun to listen to, will definitely be streaming more.
- Willow (album/regular version) - Willow is an alright song. Some nice lyrics, a nice vibe, introduces the general vibe of Evermore pretty well, but nothing about it feels particularly special. Musically, it doesn't do anything super interesting in the same way a lot of the album does, but the melody and vocals are nice, and the production marries well with Taylor's vocals. In terms of the album it makes total sense, but on its own it doesn't really stand out.
- Willow (instrumental version) - She released it to be purchased so I'm counting it. It's a nice instrumental, but Taylor's vocals and lyrics are what gives the song most of its listenability.
- Willow (lonely witch version) - This just felt unnecessary, I don't think the additional piano adds anything to the overall sound, if anything it just makes me appreciate the guitar on the regular version more because the sound of the guitar really compliments the softness of Taylor's vocals, where the piano compliments a fuller voice like in Champagne Problems. It just sounds like Willow from a timeline where worse production choices were made for Evermore.
- Willow (original songwriting demo) - She released it to be purchased so I'm counting it. The fun of demos is hearing some lyrics that didn't make it in, or some other fun stuff, or a style that didn't end up suiting the final product, but this is just a rough draft, and slightly off key at points. She was just trying to secure the number 1, and I respect it, but I can't imagine this contributes MUCH to sales.
So that's my ranking, feel free to rank them urself in the comments, and stream Moonlit Witch and Dancing Witch versions of Willow.

- 3rd place: Chasing shadows in the grocery line (12% of the votes)
- 4th place: I regret you all the time (12% of the votes)
Which means the results so far are:

- (12): Please don't ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognize anywhere
- (11): Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life
- (10): You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter

- (8): Darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream
- (7) Leaving like a father, running like water
- (6) You drew stars around my scars
Vote for the round 9 (best 5-word lyric) winner here! For Round 10, please comment below with a 4-word lyric that you think is top tier. For example: "Oh - 'cause she's dead!"*
As before, in the next round, I'll post a poll with top/select comments from this round, so that we can vote on a winner, along with the final winning verse from Round 5. Then I'll also ask you to comment with the best 3-word lyric. We'll play this game all the way down to the best single word in any of her songs.
Finally, two brief clarifying points:
- In case anyone was wondering, let's make a blanket rule that hyphenated words count as one word, not two
- A subset of a winning verse from a prior round will be ineligible in later rounds (i.e., "careless man's careful daughter" will be ineligible for best 4-word lyric)
All that said:
what's your favorite 4-word lyric?? *Just for fun, I'm going to try to pick the cheesiest string of lyrics I can think of as the example in each post

2023.06.09 00:03 19aidee9 What is a Taylor Swift song you later realized was so meaningful?
I just focused on the lake’s lyrics and how Taylor explains that sometimes she goes to the lakes with her Lover because these hunters with cell phones antagonize her personal life. She just sometimes wants to be with beautiful nature saying she wants to bathe in cliff side pools, watch wisteria grow, and just cry with nature with no one around to tweet it peacefully. “peace” also focuses on this kind of topic saying how the media looks after you and notice things that aren’t “regular” in a relationship.

2023.06.08 21:31 ThrowTinFoilAway Bejeweled & "I don't remember" Lyric's Connection to The 1975's About You
Preface: Leaving aside the recent relationship drama, just a lyrics based theory.
From the first time I heard the line--And when I meet the band / They ask, "Do you have a man?" /
I can still say, "I don't remember"--the last part about saying you don't remember didn't quite make sense. Saying you don't remember if you have a man isn't a thing? You can flippantly say "no" or "i don't know" or "i don't think so" or some other funny line but don't remember is a slightly weird response.
Knowing that Taylor heard The 1975's 2022 album early (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjvxfBafU0g), I think she could be referencing the bridge of the song About You (which is on Taylor's pre-show playlist). The bridge is a call and response to the lead singer (who sings the rest of the song) and goes: There was something 'bout you that now
I can't remember / It's the same damn thing that made my heart surrender
Hearing them back-to-back, the "don't remember" line comes together for me as a reference to About You, if you accept the next bit.
Large tin foil hats on, if About You is a ballad to Taylor (other people have discussed this plenty what with Matty's "I love you" dedication in May in Manila and the fact that Question is on The 1975's pre-show playlist while About You is on Taylor's), I think the bridge may have been meant to be sung by her (we know The 1975 and Taylor worked on some songs--see link above) or was written with her in mind. Funnily enough, it ends up being sung by Carly Hann, the wife of The 1975's guitarist.
In a Oct 2022 Vulture interview, Matty Healy says this of the bridge, which I think shows how the lyrics about remembering is pretty important to the song:
"I had different lyrics, and then I got Carly to sing the lyrics, and then I changed the lyrics. Once I did hear her say “There was something about you that now I can’t remember,” I was like,
Okay, it’s a call-and-response. But that was just finessing conjunctions and nouns and first-person, third-person stuff. The sentiment was there; I knew what I needed her to say."
And finally, April 14 in Australia Matty Healy says that romance is nice when it works and introduces About You by saying
“Ok, this is the one that worked.” which supports Taylor having heard it and being inclined to reference it.
Tin foil hat off now...
