2023.06.05 05:52 grimlev What can we do? It seems Georgia's effort to purchase Pinelog Mountain WMA has failed
Based on the
AJC's latest article and the
recent statement by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the state's offer to buy the land at its appraised value has been rejected, and the sellers are going to pursue private offers from developers unless the state can put up more money (allegedly they cant exceed the appraised value by law).
What might be useful resources or contacts if we want to preserve Pinelog Mountain -- for example, federal agencies or private conservation groups/funds that are willing/able to extend funding to bridge the funding gap?

2023.06.05 05:51 Iamusweare Question for those of you who live on the cut
The lifestyle has such a strong appeal to me (42, M). The forced minimalism, connection to nature, the type of struggle it offers (so different from the stresses of modern life).
If not for a few constraints, I would take steps tomorrow to make the move. I’m curious to know if any of you have faced similar challenges? I would love to hear your stories. But here are my constraints:
- I am an American…makes living in another country full time challenging.
- I am a married father of five kids aged between 8 and 18. Education and opportunity for my kids to have community is important to me.
- Not sure I could ever convince my wife of a simple life.
I have a feeling that all of these constraints present a bridge too far for me to cross, but I am curious and interested to hear your stories - what constraints did you have to overcome to live the narrowboat life?
I feel completely burned out in my current situation. Looking to make a change that aligns better with what I need mentally, physically and spiritually.
Anyway - if you feel inclined to share your experience or perspective feel free to do so.
Cheers

2023.06.05 05:51 CaptainPsyko Starting mostly from scratch; NY Apartment assistance needed. Help especially needed with Rugs/Color ideas.
https://i.imgur.com/3R2KgqV.jpg Let’s start with the floor plan; I sketched a few furniture pieces on there just as a fit check. I’m moving into a new place and moving out of a familial living situation where I’m taking furniture with me but have… significant holes in my set. I have three incredible couches (see here:
https://imgur.com/a/kKXxGRj/ ) the dark leather one is going on the office space where you’ll also see I marked off space for my desk and (white) 4x4 kallax full of books. The lighter leather ones are a three and 2 seat pair; I’m also taking that gorgeous marble end table between them and - not pictured because it’s in storage, a big 5 ft triangular coffee table made of the same stone.
Here’s a few photos of the space itself,
https://imgur.com/a/tKk2vJA/ - the first two are of the living room, as seen from both directions, which should give you an idea of how the goofy pillaarch impedes things and kind of darkens the room. Can’t repaint, but could probably get in there to do peel and stick wallpaper or something before the move if it would make a dramatic difference.
Things I need help with:
I need a rug that will tie that living room together with the horrible landlord beige wall paint. I also need a few other rugs for other rooms. I have no idea how to pick rugs.
Living room also needs a good TV cabinet/sideboard of some sort, but i think I have a pretty good eye for my taste for that stuff and if I can figure out the rest of the room, I figure I’ll know what I want for that.
I need a dining room table and chairs. More importantly, I need help figuring out where to best put said dining table and chairs, and then what to do with the rest of the mostly open foyeend of the living room space that I have kind of opened up there. I think I probably want to set up a little bar station/coffee station outside of the kitchen at a minimum, because the kitchen is tiny and lacks power outlets for my coffee stuff.
I need more storage in the bedroom because it doesn’t have a closet. Is a wardrobe the right call here? If so, are the various IKEA closet units any good? I like the organization/modularity options on a lot of them, but haven’t really shopped that piece elsewhere.
I’m also curious if my bedroom can be rearranged from that current setup to something more functional when adding a closet of some sort. The placement on my sketch is p arbitrary.
I don’t move into this new space for a few weeks, so nothing is down yet and I have time to get this plan right.
My own furniture tastes tend vaguely towards MCM, but not exclusively so. I like natural wood tones and matte color palettes. In terms of art that will be hanging, I have a smattering of inherited Japanese woodblock stuff, some colorful cartoony paintings done by a relative, and probably need a few more pieces. I’m largely starting over here though so I am interested in letting my other choices set the decor tone to some extent.
Help me.

2023.06.05 05:49 SpiderOnDaWall One-eyed fish care suggestions
| I'd like to introduce Odin, my newest family member. I got him for free at the pet store as he only has one eye and had been there for a long time. As he gets settled, what are some things I can do to help him out? So far, he's in a 10G tank, cycled. His tank decor is local river stone (no edges) and a few plants with more to come. He's got caves and a floating log. I have a sponge filter coming tomorrow because the HOB filter I have just doesn't have a gentle flow. Working on getting a food ring or dish so he has a "feeding spot" for pellets and frozen goodies. I plan on introducing a snail or two to see how he deals with it before maybe (maybe) introducing some chill tank mates that won't surprise him. What else? I just want this gorgeous lug to have a good life from this point out. His fins are in rough shape and he looks pekid so any advice on that is welcome, too. submitted by SpiderOnDaWall to bettafish [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 05:47 qwerty5560 Need help extending wifi range
I live is kind of a rural area and I've decided to add security cameras around the house. I'm using the reolink NVR system with their wifi cameras set up to an LAN. I want to add a camera at the end of the driveway at my gate but that's about 80 yards away through dense woods so the wifi doesn't reach. I've tried a wavlink wifi extender, various wifi bridges. One brand seemed promising as there was an Amazon review where a guy got 800 yards of range though the woods but I had trouble getting them to communicate (TP link 2.4ghz long range CPE). These bridges had various dbi strengths like 8 or 13 dbi. I found another CPE from TP link but it's a 5ghz with 23 dbi dish. Would these be strong enough to punch through the trees or am I basically out of options? There's no power along the way so the plan was to run the camera and cpe via a solar system I was going to build.

2023.06.05 05:44 CalgonTookMeAway Starsgem Review
| Vende Specs: Starsgem: group buy Toi et Moi ring (pink sapphire/ paraiba, 10k rose gold, size 9); 3mm wide chevron ring (1/2 eternity Moissinite 14k yellow gold, size 8.5); signet ring setting (14k rose gold, size 8.5); and group buy tennis bracelet (7.5 inches, 3mm, silver). Rep/ Communication: I worked with Demi at Starsgem for the ring projects- working with her has been really great! 10/10 For the tennis bracelet, I worked with Wendy at Starsgem- also a 10/10 for ease of communication and super fast delivery! Process/ CAD/ Shipping: This was my first time working with overseas vendors, so I started with Demi’s Toi et Moi group buy. I paid on April 5, got video of my finished ring on April 11, and received the ring on April 17. I liked the ring so much from the video alone that I decided to replace my missing wedding band with Demi as well. On April 11, I sent Demi some inspiration photos and requirements (ring size, thicker band, white gold, estimate request at 10k & 14k, mossinite) and for reference, pics of my old engagement ring that at the time was out for repair to replace missing pave. Demi came back with estimates on April 16, I decided on 14 k & paid on the same day, and she sent the CAD on April 18. While the band was being made, I found out my engagement ring was too delicate for repair and I needed an entirely new setting! So, on April 23, I reached out to Demi with another request, more inspiration photos, and the specs for my engagement ring center stone (a light pink brilliant cut .39 carat/4.8mm diamond). Demi sent me an estimate the same day and I paid on April 25. CAD for this signet ring came on April 28, along with an update- the 1/2 eternity was mistakenly made in yellow gold and the size/ weight of the gold in the signet setting I wanted would be about $90 more than I paid. I was fine with paying extra after reviewing the weight of the gold in the final CAD I approved. Demi immediately offered to remake the 1/2 eternity ring in white gold. But I asked to see the video of the finished piece and I actually preferred the yellow gold and took a chance it would work well with the signet’s rose gold metal. I considered it a happy accident! I received video of the 1/2 eternity on May 2, and video of the signet setting on May 10. Rings were shipped out May 10 and I received them on May 18, along with extra moissinite stones I requested for the 1/2 eternity because the whole pave business with my original engagement ring has me traumatized! I brought the setting to a local goldsmith and when she measured it, it fit my diamond perfectly, which was a huge relief! Finished Pieces: 10/10 I am incredibly happy with my new everyday rings. The Toi et Moi is gorgeous and bright and just looking at it cheers me up. Although I was really sad about losing my original engagement ring setting, the rose gold metal has given my little pink stone new life! In some lights it appears icy pink, and in other lights a blushing warmer hue. And the Moissys on my 1/2 eternity highlight my signet ring so beautifully-like tiny Klieg lights! The sparkle is so hard to capture in photos! I was so pleased with the process that I also impulsively did the Starsgem tennis bracelet group buy (in silver) with Wendy while I waited for my rings—that was also a very smooth and easy experience. I paid for the bracelet on May 15 and received it less than a week and a half later. The clasp is a little fiddly, otherwise a beautiful bracelet that I’ve really fallen in love with! 9.5/10. I am thankful that I spent a lot of time reading the community guidelines on purchasing overseas because I was able to manage my expectations around timelines and be very clear with my communication. I also did my best to communicate during Starsgem’s work hours so we could go back and forth over details quickly vs. over many days. I would absolutely work with Demi & Starsgem team again-excited to build up some savings for the next dream project! CAD / Prices: Toi et Moi ($307, including PayPal fee & shipping), chevron 1/2 eternity ($297 w/ PP fee & shipping), signet ring setting ($427 w/PP fee), and silver moissy tennis bracelet ($103 with PP fee and shipping). submitted by CalgonTookMeAway to Moissanite [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 05:40 Brentonam001 Wor Ch 83-84
Ch 83 “They call for a storm. My opposite.” OH so theres always 2? Ruin and Preservation. Storms and ... Peace? Calm? ”Cleansing”?
With Kaladin and Moash, my instant assumption would be: Kaladin tries to reason. Its too late. Kaladin is wounded but can still take most of them. He refuses to fight Moash. Moash somehow gets the king. Kaladin evokes Bridge Four. Moash says some line about To Hell With Bridge 4, and it all plays out in some way where its no longer a misunderstanding, Kaladin does every honourable thing by the book, its clear Moash is in the wrong not Kaladin, Kaladin earns Syl back in full despite failing, and reenters the battle as a radiant to save everyone, and this allows for Kaladin to miraculously save the day all while thinking ‘yeah but the king is dead’ and never being content.
If Kaladin is Jesus, Moash is offically Judas. I can already hear Jesus Christ Superstar "Its all gone sour" as they talk.
Ch 84 “Stone will shatter” Yep I think the two storm gods fought and shattered the planes.
Hurrah Adoli—Oh no no
Interesting, Moash was planning to hold back. “If I only protect the people I like (...) thats just selfishness.” Moash better run. If anyone, especially Kaladin, starts chanting “Life before death” its absolutely about to be a "Hello, My Name Is Inigo Montoyo" moment.
Yep. Shifting it from “Kaladin why are you doing this?” to “hey, remember that blade YOU GAVE me? Well, now I'm going to try to kill you with it.” is a surefire way to make it clear Moash has gone too far (like if he cared about honour and doing the right thing he’d at least toss the blade away and say ‘no, he gave me that. I’m sorry he has to die but at the very least I respect that gift’ or something.) But also, “If its right” is an oddly subjective and vague stipulation to otherwise highly dogmatic code of honour. Buut, what a well done Matrix moment. He’s Beginning To Believe.
Welp. It played out almost as I said except it was entirely triumphant. That feels ... weird.

2023.06.05 05:26 EmmarJay My great grandfather has been missing for over a century. I know what happened to him.
The day seemed like it would be ordinary until the aeronautical community’s most sought after document showed up on my doorstep.
It came wrapped in brown kraft paper tied off with twine, and the exterior packaging had no return address nor any indication of a postage stamp. It was as though it had been simply bundled up and dropped into my wall-mounted mailbox by a random passerby.
No part of me was willing to surrender the strange parcel without opening it first. Regardless of who its contents truly belonged to, my eyes would be the first to see it. I removed the twine and then dug a thumb under a fold in the packaging paper before clawing it away to expose a brown tan notebook circa 1900. It was full grain buffalo leather with a crisscross of cord for the spine and a thick hand cut string keeping it sealed shut.
When I undid the string, the pages that had been gripped tight by the leather fanned out gently then returned to their original position, my eyes landing on the front page. It was without a printer’s mark and read in big handwritten type: “THE DIARY AND RECORD OF HENRY H. HELGELAND.”
I knew in that instant the package was in the hands of who it was rightfully sent out for. Not just because I’d recently lost my job as an associate at our city’s art museum but because of a separate, much deeper connection to the diary’s author.
Perhaps it’s in my best interests to turn it over to the National Archives, or the US Arctic Research Commission, or maybe even the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, but at the risk of seeing it blue-penciled to death, I’ve elected to instead share it here and now.
The world needs to know what happened.
---
Henry H. Helgeland — my great grandfather — was a severe looking man with a walrus mustache and a bone to pick with anyone who ever doubted him. He was born in Oakland, California in 1871 and was, by all available accounts relayed to me, well-behaved and well-liked. His father worked a lucrative job in the shipping industry, transporting timber between San Francisco and the Central Valley. Two years into Henry’s life, his mother would contract a fatal case of diphtheria and die shortly thereafter; when he was old enough to understand what had happened, Henry “yearn[ed] fervently for a reunion to mend [his] great anguish and sorrow.”
Near the turn of the 20th century, Henry attended Stanford University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he learned everything from thermodynamics to machine design. But it was a lecture about polar transportation that would ultimately kindle his interest in a separate enterprise: arctic exploration. Indeed, the race to the North Pole was well underway, with naval officers, geologists, and aeronauts around the globe vying for the chance to make history. My great grandfather, like many of his peers, propounded the theory that he, and he alone, would be the first to reach the Great White North.
In 1895, Henry graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and sought to expand the member list of the so called Ascension Society, a student organization he’d assembled to aid engineering graduates with materials science. Many of its constituents had engaged in research projects and experimental setups to hone their craft of mechanical systems, but in time, however, the venture would instead prove a hotspot for investors and philanthropists. Donations averaging up to $5,000 helped fund and promote the fantastic ambitions of my great grandfather. So long as the Ascension Society was gracing him with their support, he’d be the first to reach the North Pole.
In early 1898, armed with enough capital, Henry used the proceeds to purchase the materials required for the balloon.
---
A notable circus at the forefront of traveling attractions in the early twentieth century was The Fielding Troupe. With its impressive lineup of talent — from fire eaters and aerialists to equestrians and strongmen — the ensemble drew crowds from nearly every town in western America during its historic run. Its wide reach would ultimately reel in many notable faces, including my great grandfather.
Prior to a performance in Oakland, the Fielding Troupe led a procession through the town around Stanford University, announcing their arrival with a parade of wagons, floats, and animals. The strategy, as it were, was to drum up as much publicity and fanfare as possible. Evidently it worked, as a healthy fraction of the faculty and student body at Stanford made the trip over to Oakland in order to see the troupe in action.
Surrounding their arena with two hundred feet of heavy duty tent canvas, the troupe put on a show for the ages the night Henry was in attendance, with extravagant acrobatics, trained animal performances, and a special appearance from Curtis the Clown. Following a skillful display of juggling and good natured audience ribbing, Curtis’s master stroke was an intricate stunt involving balloons and wire flying. Firstly, he would inflate several multi-colored balloons and tie them off with string, securing them firmly in his grip. They served as a flashy distraction from the piece of flexible metal snaking out from the harness he had concealed under his equally flashy costume. Then, with a whisper of strength, a couple stagehands hoisted the balloon-carrying clown thirty feet into the air to make it appear as though he was levitating by virtue of the balloons alone. A separate performer — a marksman — showed off his sharpshooting skills with a Winchester model rifle and gunned down the balloons, exploding each one as the stagehands loosened their hold on Curtis’s harness until he was eased to the ground.
Henry watched the routine with eager delight. Seeing Curtis the Clown float above a hundred or so onlookers helped stir within him a plan. The ceiling of the Big Top Tent where Curtis had concluded his ascent represented more than the centerpiece of a traveling circus.
“Ascendancy,” Henry muttered to his wife Ruth. “This is how we get to the top of the world.”
---
The spherical vessel measured sixty-five feet in diameter, with a capacity of over 200,000 cubic feet. Its construction was overseen by Henry and a couple french engineers who installed in its gondola three berths and ample ballast to keep it stable. The gondola, a carefully constructed assemblage of wicker and chestnut wood, was built as such to bar any interference to the magnetic instruments of the explorers. Keeping it shielded against severe weather conditions was a varnished silk calotte and a vaselined net composed of over four-hundred hemp cords. A bamboo pole was attached bellow the carrying ring to attach the side sails and, perhaps most notably, the balloon was fitted with hemp and cocoa nut fiber guide ropes to help steer and maintain a consistent altitude.
After two years of exhaustive construction, work on the balloon was completed in 1900. Henry named it Ascension, after the society that funded its creation.
---
What follows are several selected passages lifted directly from Henry’s memorandum, transcribed by me. The first entry reads:
“At nine o'clock on the forenoon, May 5, 1900, under the auspices of the Ascension Society, we embarked from the 71st parallel on our quest of the Pole. Our great journey sets off from Point Barrow, Alaska following a grueling adventure aboard the steamer Sursum. I, Henry Helgeland, travel forth, accompanied by Charles Ringvold, esteemed navigator, and Edward Meyer, long celebrated physician, into the arctic wilderness. Together, our efforts will generate a most formidable team and an unwavering spirit. We will ascend.”
Indeed, the SS Sursum disembarked from a port in San Francisco in mid May of that year; it offered easy access to the Pacific Ocean and sailed through the Bering Strait, covering over 3,000 nautical miles before reaching Point Barrow on July 2.
When the balloon took off, carried by a fierce north east wind, it was to a thunderous applause from those that had come to bear witness to the bold endeavor. Among them were crew members of the SS Sursum, high ranking associates of the Ascension Society, and carpenters tasked with helping the balloon reach its initial phase of liftoff.
As it elevated to 300 hundred feet and passed around an onlooking whaler, Henry was reported to have shouted: “To the top of the world, hurrah!”
---
36 hours would elapse before a second entry was made.
“July 4, 1900, Lat. 77° 48' N, Long. 143° 4' W. We are soaring at a height of 600 feet above the Earth's surface, traveling at a speed of approximately seven kilometers per hour. Our morale remains similarly aloft. Charles relayed to me that, God willing, we anticipate reaching the pole in roughly 800 miles. Beyond the drag ropes lending their ballast to our journey, optimism is our guiding force. We will ascend.”
Turbulent air currents had a different plan in mind, however.
“July 5, 1900, Lat. 80° 8' N, Long. 138° 37' W. Alas! Our aerial journey came to an abrupt halt yestereve on the 80th parallel. We voyaged as many as 500 miles before a forceful downdraft spun our vehicle on its vertical axle and compelled it into a sharp descent; we had lost what we estimate to be just over 100 cubic feet of gas.
“Edward suffered severe injuries during the initial impact and claims his vertebrae have been shattered, leaving him immobile. We’re at the mercy of the floe on which we now rest, at the mercy of the Polar Sea. Should we face the specter of death, we shall meet it with unwavering honor. We will ascend.”
---
“July 6, 1900. We find ourselves solitary in the barren expanse, accompanied only by bergs, ice-fields, and majestic glaciers. Our rations encompass a container’s worth of hardtack, enough salted beef for approximately one week, canned stew, dried apricots, some chocolate bars, and seven bottles of ale.
“Edward’s outlook remains grim; he suspects he’ll never walk again. In witness of his current state, I’m beginning to share in such apprehensions. Edward, whom we have reposed on on of our sledges, fears that the opportunity to make known the great love he holds for his mistress Rebecca is one he’ll never be granted. ‘You shall be reunited at once,’ I assured him. ‘Our journey to triumph will not be thwarted by minor inconveniences.’
“We’ve plotted the course to our next destination: that being Herschel Island, located off the coast of Canada in the Beaufort Sea. Charles — who shares in Edward’s dismay — estimates a three month footslog spanning just under one thousand miles is in store for us, perhaps more given Edward’s ailment. I am determined to see this mission to its completion, yet survival remains a paramount desire. Who’s to recount our extraordinary journey should we fail?
“While establishing our encampment and scouting the local flora of the area for additional sources of sustenance, I happened upon a plant of an unknown species. Half a meter tall, bulbous tubers, and thin roots terminating in clusters of white flowers; intuition suggests this is a water hemlock, which precludes it from edibility. Nevertheless, I shall regard this finding as one of great fortune. A portent of divine value. We will ascend.”
---
Two days later, gold prospectors off the Alaskan coast at Nome beach were in the process of emptying their sluice boxes when from the sky flew a carrier pigeon directly to their mining site. It bore a label with the inscription “Helgeland” and contained the following dispatch:
“July 7, 1900. First dog watch. Three southerly traveling carrier-pigeons were sent off at approximately 7 h. 40 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, the following among them. This is Rear Admiral Charles Ringvold of the United States Navy and the Helgeland Balloon Expedition of 1900. Our hopes of reaching the pole have been reduced to naught. Assistance urgently needed. Our destinies have hitherto been unknown, and now my fears have been actualized. GO IN TERROR OF HENRY HELGELAND. He is not who he proclaims to be. I volunteered for a man of honorable stature and venturesome drive. The man before me betrays neither.”
The remainder of the message was a hasty scrawl, decrypted only by the best in linguistics and modern codebreaking.
“UNASSISTED WE WILL PERISH HELPED WE WILL PERSEVERE PLEASE GOD HELP US HENRY WILL KILL US ALL DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT HE PROCLAIMS.”
The communication was immediately passed off to the Smithsonian Institution, where word fell within the earshot of Ascension Society proponents and additional members of the US Navy. A follow-up expedition — a rescue team led by Captain S. P. Matthews — was put together at once with the authorization of the Secretary of War.
Months later, after a congressional bill introduced to secure grant funding for arctic exploration — and thereby a rescue mission for Helgeland’s lost expedition — was successfully passed, the USS Greenwich departed from the San Francisco Naval Shipyard with a crew of thirty boatswains, medics, and deck officers among others.
What they would ultimately uncover puzzled them all.
---
“July 7, 1900. The team has fractured. We are without our provisions and without the morale that has served us thusly.
“Charles and I set upon the pursuit and capture of a walrus, a most strenuous task in the Arctic Circle. Furnished with a Winchester model .40-82, the sport skews in our favor but we are in no short supply of peril. These are one ton beasts with the strength of a hundred strongmen as they stave the ice, and yet it is not them I should have feared.
“’I can’t allow you to proceed further.’ I heard the click clack racket of the Winchester as Charles chambered a round and raised the rifle, training its twenty inch barrel toward my back after I had volunteered — quite ignorantly — to take the vanguard.
“’Charles?’ I managed between clattering teeth.
“’You’re a man of bold stature. An honorable man at that. But not honorable enough to die for. And that’s it, Henry. I will not die for you.’
“’You speak out of distress, not rationality.’
“’I’m as rational as one permits when I say we won’t all make it to Canada. You can’t expect us to sledge Edward for the next month and retain our strength. Our sanities.” I could hear him gulp, ‘our lives.’
“’You’re not who you say you are.’ I realized in that moment. ‘Not even an ensign would renounce his own crew. Who are you really, Charles?’
“His credentials were a farce; a clever scheme to scrape through the expedition’s vetting process. He was no navy-man nor expert nor navigator and if you piled his life’s accomplishments on top of one another, they’d be equal to that of a cretin.
“’Doesn’t matter any more, Henry.’
“’Then why haven’t you shot me?’
“I sensed beyond his terror a hint of reluctance and felt within him the trepidation of an amateur. The man had never wielded a firearm in his life and wouldn’t start hence.
“’In Your infinite mercy, hear my prayer. In Your boundless grace, grant me Your forgiveness,’ he muttered below his breath. I could’ve believed he’d have squeezed the trigger if not for the unexpected convulsion that suddenly brought him to his knees. Befallen by the strange attack, Charles unhanded the Winchester and collapsed to the ice in the midst of a crippling seizure. And in a matter of moments, he had succumbed to death.
“With some activated charcoal or perhaps an emetic, he could have eluded such a painful demise. I stepped over to look upon his body, his pupils dilated to the size of dimes. Reviewing the immediate symptoms, intuition tells me he’s become the latest victim of hemlock poisoning, the kind of amateur mistake I’d expect from someone such as Charles. Ideal timing, if I may speak candidly.
“Hope remains alive. I will ascend.”
---
Investigators with the crew of S. P. Matthews found everything except answers.
It took them all of three months to zero in on the campsite left behind by Helgeland’s expedition. Any prospect of finding the balloon itself was dropped by the wayside to preserve manpower and time.
The camp was discovered on the 79th parallel, not in any particular state of disarray but with enough evidence to suggest conflict had broken out between the members. Edward was discovered in a tent with the rest of the rations and a bullet hole stamped in the side of his head. There was no telling how long he’d been dead for.
Forty-five meters away from the camp, buried under a stalagmitic gathering of ice and snow, was the body of Charles Ringvold. A followup inquiry would prove my great grandfather’s claims that he was a fraud, but like Charles himself, the truth is buried deep under the surface. Edward and Charles are commemorated for their failed — albeit honorable — efforts in the face of great opposition.
The body of my great grandfather, however, was never found. Theories thus abound in the saga of Henry H. Helgeland and we are no more the wiser now than we were a century ago. He is remembered for murdering his men in cold blood, deserting them, and then yielding to the elements somewhere in the frozen hell of the arctic. The carrier-pigeon message sent by Charles corroborated the apparent facts.
But I know the truth. Because only I have the answers.
“July 8, 1900. All that remains is me, for everyone else has vanished. Edward and I regaled each other with stories of our mistresses as night fell upon our place in the arctic wasteland. Rebecca, Edward’s beloved, works as an expert seamstress in San Francisco and will no doubt be devastated when news of his fate reaches her. But the great memories they shared together, I assured him, will serve her well in the years to come.
“‘You shall be reunited at once,’ I whispered to him once more before executing the dying man with the Winchester. It is my turn to face whatever awaits me on the ice.
“My great anguish and sorrow have been mended.
“Ruth is calling to me now. Our son promptly requires our presence.
“I shall go to them."
The fruitless search for my great grandfather peaked at last with the unearthing of a path of footprints snaking away from the tent where Edward’s body lay. Investigators followed them for approximately ten meters before they abruptly ceased. Captain Matthews is quoted as saying: “it was as though the walker had simply floated away.”
And indeed, it was our family that won in the end, for my great grandfather received exactly what he wanted. The final, undated entry of his diary is comprised of but three simple words:
“I have ascended.”

2023.06.05 05:21 wakeupsmelltheashes Looking for advice/ insight, what is typical treatment for chronic
33F USA, kidney stones since I was 17, 2-10mm all birthed naturally. When I first started having them they were more frequent but with lifestyle changes, being mindful, etc, I don't have them as often as I used to but they still occur more than I'd like haha
For the first part of all this I didn't have insurance so when I had a kidney stone attack I went to the emergency room bc I kinda didn't have any other option. I would be referred to a urologist but since I couldn't pay at that time, I never followed up. All that debt went to collections and eventually was written off. That was a long time ago.
Now, things in my life are much better provided for and I have insurance. I've gone to a urologist, had a stone looked at, 24hr urine test all kinds of stuff. This is great but the bills add up.
I've been going to the same ER all my life, there is records of my kidney stone history at this hospital; basically what I'm saying is that this is a known recurrent issue. Furthermore, both my father and his father both have the same condition, however I am estranged and not in a position to seek advice about it.
Coming to my real question, am I really expected to go to the ER any time I have a kidney stone? It's kinda really expensive and I end up waiting like a really really long time sometimes in unimaginable pain... I just ask bc I have several times passed kidney stones successfully at home using just a little bit of leftover medication from the last time around. Sometimes I only resort to the ER bc I don't have any old meds laying aroundor went thru them already.
I realize that kidney stones carry potential risks, but having done this rodeo several dozen times, I'm familiar with them and know what to look for. I wouldn't want to lose a kidney, but if I keep going to the ER I might have to sell one to pay the bills.
I guess I'm not really satisfied with my treatment options being raw dogging it or going to the ER on a prayer and hope that I can find some relief there in a reasonable time... since history has shown me how unreliable the ER is, I really want another option, but when I've asked to have any kind of small stash of pain meds to keep at home as needed, my doctor has denied it? It just feels like a rock haha and a hard place. Sorry this turned into a rant, it just feels like nobody cares about my pain or quality of life. Maybe it's an unreasonable ask but IDK what is reasonable either. Thanks in advance.

| A diesel concrete pump is a sheet of heavy-duty concrete pumping equipment that is driven from a diesel-fueled engine. One of the main explanations why such pumps are really popular from the construction industry is that they can operate in all types of environments without issue. Workers don't have to depend on their being an electricity source on-site to function diesel concrete pumps. The pumps are particularly great for construction work offshore and also in remote locations where high voltage electricity sources are tricky to find. High-quality diesel concrete pumps offer great performance as well as efficiency. The tools are designed to last and they are very reliable and sturdy. The top powered nature of top-range diesel concrete pumps for sale means they are the first pick for construction workers in harsh environments around the globe. https://preview.redd.it/26r5blli944b1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06a2dc70ae4c13ae61ccffc5ca775157d24937b7 Unique Benefits Associated With Diesel Concrete Pumps • Available in greater power variations than their electric-powered counterparts. • Capable of function in all environments and look after excellent performance. • Smooth s-value design features to stop clogging and concrete congestion. • Handheld remote control functionality to permit easy operation with longer hoses. • An easy task to service and repair. • Constructed from wear-resistant materials ensuring no corrosion and rusting. • High export pressure which makes them ideal for tunnel construction and high-rise building construction. Basically we happen to be speaking about concrete pumping machinery driven by diesel-powered motors thus far, there are several benefits of electric concrete pumps and are generally actually desired by many companies. In the first place, electric pumps produce less noise and air pollution during operation. Such pumps also are certainly more lightweight and compact. They can even be much easier to maintain in certain ways. The main problem with electric-powered machinery is entry to a high voltage stable electricity source is essential for operation. Obviously, some businesses their very own own generators making the requirement for access to local electricity supplies at different jobs sites a non-issue. 2023.06.05 05:01 JoshAsdvgi The Men of the Early Times
| The Men of the Early Times Zuni (New Mexico) Eight years was but four days and four nights when the world was new. It was while such days and nights continued that men were led out, in the night-shine of the World of Seeing. For even when they saw the great star, they thought it the Sun-father himself, it so burned their eye-balls. Men and creatures were more alike then than now. Our fathers were black, like the caves they came from; their skins were cold and scaly like those of mud creatures; their eyes were goggled like an owl's; their ears were like those of cave bats; their feet were webbed like those of walkers in wet and soft places; they had tails, long or short, as they were old or young. Men crouched when they walked, or crawled along the ground like lizards. They feared to walk straight, but crouched as before time they had in their cave worlds, that they might not stumble or fall in the uncertain light. When the morning star arose, they blinked excessively when they beheld its brightness and cried out that now surely the Father was coming. But it was only the elder of the Bright Ones, heralding with his shield of flame the approach of the Sun-father. And when, low down in the east, the Sun-father himself appeared, though shrouded in the mist of the world-waters, they were blinded and heated by his light and glory. They fell down wallowing and covered their eyes with their hands and arms, yet ever as they looked toward the light, they struggled toward the Sun as moths and other night creatures seek the light of a camp fire. Thus they became used to the light. But when they rose and walked straight, no longer bending, and looked upon each other, they sought to clothe themselves with girdles and garments of bark and rushes. And when by walking only upon their hinder feet they were bruised by stone and sand, they plaited sandals of yucca fibre. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 04:50 Jack-Fitch [TotK] - My Personal Take On The Story In The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom
This may be a bit of a controversial take but I honestly wasn’t a fan of the story in The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. I honestly was a bit excited for this game coming out because it is the first game in a long time that Ganondorf made a re-entry in the series and one criticism I actually gave the Zelda franchise was that I believe that Ganondorf isn’t in enough Zelda games but now after actually beating the game and after 6 years of waiting after Breath Of The Wild, I feel like there was potential for the story to be really good and interesting but instead the game just felt undercooked with half baked ideas and the story is a convoluted mess with the most cookie cutter, bare bones plot structure you could imagine.
I feel like the characters weren’t utilized well to their full potential and the story overall just felt shallow and paper thin with it’s presentation. It was lazy and it was crafted with no direction of creativity. I just think the biggest problem with the story as a whole is that it feels so generically crafted and there’s just not much too it.
I think the biggest issue that exposes this is the way they handled Zelda in this game. I think her lack of agency in the story creates plot holes and many things that actually happen in the game are just left vague with very little detail explaining how things are so the story can be pieced together.
Even right in the beginning of the game I kind of question the motivation of why Zelda and Link decided to go down into a cave and explore Hyrule’s past without really much thought given. I know this is a minor complaint but it kind of bothers me how the whole story in this game is set up just from this happening alone and then they just happen to find Ganondorf just chilling beneath Hyrule Castle and he is somehow powerful enough now to literally disintegrate the master sword with barely any trouble.
I mean, I think it’s cool how he can actually do that now and I love Ganondorf as he’s always been one of my favorite characters of all time and don’t get me wrong but isn’t the master sword like Ganondorf’s one weakness? I think I wouldn’t have a problem that he could do this at all if they at least just bothered to give a bit more solid context as to how Ganondorf can now just overpower Link so easily in the beginning of the game.
The only logic you can come up for why and how Ganondorf can do this is because he acquired Sonia’s stone on his forehead but the game never clearly states this so all you can do is speculate.
This is what I mean about the story being vague because nothing is ever articulated well enough that you actually see an explanation so you can understand what the hell is happening in this game.
Another issue with the games story is how much this game just dumps the same exposition in your face like as if you couldn’t understand simple things that the story tells you meanwhile not being able to focus on anything that could be more subtle like with Zelda being a puppet of Ganondorf throughout 2 thirds of the entire game but doesn’t utilize to it’s fullest potential.
This could’ve been honestly one of the darkest games of all time if they just fixed how they handled Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. I don’t really like how the characters barely turn against Zelda when they can clearly see that Zelda is doing some really terrible things like how she used Yunobo to turn all his people into slaves that reject work and eat rocks all day, and how she was literally responsible for causing all of Rito Village to suffer a blizzard harshly.
I understand why Queen Sonia didn’t turn against Zelda because she was able to see how she was a fake Zelda right before her eyes but during the entire game where you play as Link, nobody see’s the real Zelda and they’re just left to speculate what the hell is happening.
What we actually got was disappointing as answers. What really happened to Zelda was that it’s revealed that she turned herself into a light dragon after she was told by Mineru that it was forbidden because she wouldn’t be able to turn back and she decides to swallow a stone and turns into a dragon.
Not only does the game not make clear how she travelled back in time to begin with but then it all leads down to a disappointing plot twist that also gets resolved in an instant at the very end of the game but we’ll talk about that more down below.
The reason I state that the game repeats exposition and throws it down your face is because there’s also this one cutscene that gets repeated being shown 4 times as if we didn’t already have a grasp about that Rauru imprisoned Ganondorf after the Imprisoning War. We don’t need to watch the same exact thing happen over and over again after we beat an area and dungeon in the game.
The game has no real sense of progression and instead formulaically copies the same cutscene watered down every time.
I also don’t like a lot of the new characters they make up in the game that are newly introduced. Either they feel like filler characters or their entire existence is contrived to begin with.
Personally I'm going to be honest with you. I'm not a big fan of Rauru as a character. I find it pretty hard to actually believe that he himself is actually the first king of Hyrule mainly because it doesn't actually make any sense from a biological standpoint.
If you're telling me some weird goat dude was the first king of Hyrule and if the Zonai were really responsible for building the kingdom to begin with, then this creates a massive question. How do you explain how the Hylian's rose to power when the Zonai are the creators?
In theory, you could probably argue that Rauru's spirit maybe met some random dude and told him he could be king but the game never hints how that could be the case as like with Ganondorf now having power to destroy the master sword or the situation where Zelda is turned into a dragon is left very vague with nothing deeper than just simply go with whatever nonsense is happening in the plot of this game.
It's not even that I think Rauru is annoying. I just think he's a really boring, uninteresting character who also just has no personally. I think the people honestly making this game didn't bother putting two seconds of thought into how this would work that a goat looking freak of nature is the original king of Hyrule.
I don't actually care about him or the ancestor's which by the way are just bootleg versions of the champions from Breath Of The Wild because the story does nothing developing it's characters past the cookie cutter and basic storyline of good guys must defeat evil demon bad guy that you see recycled a million times.
I actually kind of wonder how if he's actually the king of Hyrule how it never crosses Zelda's mind to wonder if they're somehow biologically related somehow but you know, who'd wonder anything about that right? Nah, let's just go with it right?
A lot of the new side characters are also extremely boring generic archetypes like Tulin who's just some brat who thinks he's tough and then for some reason, Teba who's actually his father just decides to allow Tulin to fight with Link anyways because you gotta have some little kid fighting to relate to babies playing this game and Sona who's extremely aggravating because the writers just thought it would be smart to just add some new forced in love interest who's in love with Sidon even though they've never even been together shown in Breath Of The Wild and have the amount of chemistry as two planks of wood and showing a paper bag being blown beneath your legs.
Not even much to say beyond that regarding these "Characters" if you could even call them that.
Going back to Zelda though, I think the biggest problem with her character arc is that she's utilized about as subtle as raw paper throughout the entire story. I think the biggest problem with her becoming a dragon is that it kind of removes any tension or real stakes of what goes on with her.
I just feel like it would've been a lot cooler in the story if there was more intriguing mystery surrounding why Zelda was acting so strange throughout the entire game because on paper, it is a good concept. I'll give Tears Of The Kingdom credit with that.
It would've been better if the game had you first meet Zelda and then emotionally tries to break Link and hurt all of her friends and then everybody turns against her meanwhile the real Zelda hides in the shadows trying to prove there was an imposter and nobody believes her. That seems like a much better outline for a really dark and gritty story and personally if I was writing this games plot, that would be what it'd be focused on.
Dragon Zelda shouldn't even exist in this game. I thought it was stupid because it took away all the tension that evil Zelda was doing and it wasn't like it wasn't so obvious that Ganondorf was pulling the strings behind Zelda this whole time.
The reason why this is such a terrible plot twist is because it ruins the darker tone this game was trying to aim for with Ganondorf's admittedly cool and dark plan of ruining the belief that Zelda is such a pure and innocent soul as a way to get revenge on the fact he was imprisoned. Breaking people from the inside is a lot darker than breaking them from the outside and that's something I think this game doesn't understand.
Personally I think they also ruined this part of the story because they needed to aim it towards kids and not both kids and adults and I see this as an issue because there's absolutely nothing wrong with an adult having his nostalgia for a video game so that argument would be ridiculous.
It's just a shame that the game's plot isn't as dark as it could've been and would've been a lot more interesting this way.
Now I was maybe just a little bit hard on Ganondorf in this game but to be fair, I don't actually think he was done poorly in this game. I think the final boss in this game minus the part where Ganondorf turns into a dragon was a pretty cool fight and I also think that he does look pretty cool in this game too.
My only real issue with Ganondorf in this game is that I do feel like his characterization is kind of lacking in this game. All of his dialogue is just generic comically evil one liners and it kind of just takes me a bit out of it when I'm just trying to have fun watching Ganondorf kick everybody's ass on screen. Him talking about how he just wants to erase light from this world feels a bit cheesy and I think they could've done a better job making him a bit more serious as a character and really going an extra mile ruining Zelda's reputation as a hero.
I say this not ever because I hate Ganondorf. I say this because I know when things have more potential and they could be done better and I feel like Ganondorf's presentation with his character writing was a bit lacking in this game. I feel like Wind Waker actually did a better job making him feel more human inside but that's because we saw him care about something more than just enslaving Hyrule for once.
I feel like if Ganondorf was given a bit more human emotion, it would've made more since that he was actually born as the demon king instead of just becoming the demon king stealing some jewel from some ancient people. Wasn't Ganondorf already the reincarnation of Demise or is that just not the case anymore somehow? It's not like we ever learn what motivated Ganondorf to steal it to begin with other than simply obtaining power.
Lastly we must talk about the games ending. I know there's a few parts that I haven't brought up yet like anything about Mineru, or literally questioning how the hell guardians don't exist anymore which is a whole thing into itself but to prevent this post from being too long, I'm just talking about what's really most relevant in the games story.
I find it to be a ridiculous asspull that Zelda turns back into a human simply because Link gave Rauru the channeled power to do some magic garbage on her. I find it rather baffling that she was turned into a dragon and was told she wouldn't be able to turn back but the story retcons this anyways without logically piecing together what could be a cure for Zelda that could work.
Instead they just use magic out of their ass because Link is apparently God in this game. I find it to be really annoying that he also has no real chemistry with Zelda because he's so emotionless and hollow with how he presents feelings towards her. Link in this game just feels like a blank slate of a character.
He's already overpowered when the game first starts and then he's able to fight Ganondorf later by having way less trouble than before. What kind of character progression is that? At least in Twilight Princess or Wind Waker, he starts off weak and grows stronger overtime but in this game, Link just feels like cardboard designed as a plot device for himself and the other character.
There's no sense of scale for his power level and he can just save people from curses and overpower a literal dark lord because the game demands it for the sake of the plot. Not because any of these characters actually feel like people.
Look, this game isn't a bad game and to be fair, I still think it has a lot of good qualities and the game is fun sometimes. Although, it struggles as a whole game mainly because it's nothing really that original as a game and that concerns me. It just feels like Breath Of The Wild with a bit of minor tweak's to it.
Breath Of The Wild despite being a really fun game for me was only a 7/10 because while it was a very fun game, it was lacking with it's story and I also thought the game had issues with weapons breaking all the time and the open world just feeling lifeless sometimes because there were no characters that really felt like they touched my soul.
Tears Of The Kingdom is honestly overall a 6/10 game for me which may be controversial but I'm not afraid to say this game honestly has a lot more problems than some of these other critics are making this game out to be.
I haven't even talked about the actual "Game" part of it yet but there's honestly a lot I could say about this game. If this truly is game of the year this year, than gaming truly is dying and that's literally sad.
Overall, I think the biggest problem with the story in this game is the fact that it's not willing to create or write anything that doesn't have a basic and more complex story structure and that hurts it overall because I see that the game has good ideas but it's not willing to advance further and write stronger story beats because by design, this entire game is too much like Breath Of The Wild and tries to do the same thing but ends up falling apart with some of it's core design.
Can I be one to say that I'm honestly getting sick of Breath Of The Wild? Yes, it was a good game but it was fresh back when it came out in 2017 and Tears Of The Kingdom just feels like a worse replica of that game. It's definitely not way worse than Breath Of The Wild but I actually think that even compared to a game like that, it doesn't quite have all of it's charm.
I'm not a big fan of Tears Of The Kingdom's story. I think it's honestly just a ripoff of Breath Of The Wild's story but also fanfiction writing the origin of Hyrule and failing. I think there was a lot of missing potential for one of the darkest games ever made and it just didn't have enough thought and focus put into it. I think it's characters are shallow, 1-Dimensional, and the story fails because it tries too much to keep the same formula as Breath Of The Wild which holds the story back from breathing air more and focusing on more ideas better.
Please let me know what your take on this games story is. I'm curious. I'm always up for a friendly discussion. Stay tuned for more posts and have a good day.

2023.06.05 04:46 buttsquasher The Lithophage Corruptor should eventually have its own mission.
Following the current discourse surrounding season 4, I think it's best to stay on the neutral side and offer some sollutions instead of falling into the usual arguments.
Personally, I wouldn't go as far as to say it's "disappointing" but rather "rushed" because the elements are good on their own but feel kind of messy once assembled into a big picture. The Lithophage Corruptor, or Harold and the Jetboots feel tacked on despite how prominently featured they are in promotional materials, usually from their rare and random distribution (if not downright absence from gameplay) within missions. I fully understand the purpose of the Experimental Branch is to iron out the kinks before a full release but even then, it still feels like a missed opportunity given the potentials.
So here's my proposition and I feel like some parts of the community would share the same idea: Combine the two elements into a mission type of its own called Critical Decontamination in which the Corruptors have been running amok and pretty much "terraforming" parts of the biome into a tower-like structure with "floors" made of giant Rockpox branches which requires Jetboots to safely traverse (boots will always be deployed at the start of the mission). As for the ground corruptions, they are all over the map but to prevent mashing A+D 80% of the mission time, they can be temporarily nullified with Lithofoam or permanently removed with Lithovac. Personally, I think this idea can accomplish plenty of things and add cohesion to the new contents added:
- Giving Harold his own spotlight
- A need to use the Jetboots
- The hazardous map layout making the Stingtail and Spreader particularly dangerous (pulls you off ledges or mortars you across the chasms)
- High verticality creating a new experience
- Giving play.....dwarves a temporary band-aid sollution to focus on combat
Not to mention, a "cleaned" version of this cave generation will be available for regular missions with a 100% spawn for Jetboots, hinting at a previous successful decontamination.
However, there's a reason why I titled this post with "eventually". With GSG now also being a publisher (please, Dark Swarm), their workload is significantly increased with DRG not being the top priority at the moment (or at least that's what I think). So in good faith as a dwarf with nearly 1000 hours of service, I can pull through this season with hopes for a big, fat, juicy update for Season 4 and all the best for GSG in the future.
Rock and Stone, you beautiful dwarves.

2023.06.05 04:33 smolcrackheadenergy TWICE's Between 1&2 💞 11th Mini Album Review
Hello,
kpopthoughts! Originally this was posted in
twice but one of my friends said I should crosspost it here — so here this album review is.
Intro
To preface the review, I just need to say that this is going to be a very long read. Going through it myself for the fun of it takes around 30 minutes — it's almost 7k words, including lyrical references. So for the best experience, listen to the album beforehand to understand what the hell I was thinking when I wrote this, play the album while reading, and set a good amount of time aside.
And yes, this is 9 months late 😭 I'm not sorry — when I find an album review online it's always around a paragraph per song or even shorter. It makes sense from a journalistic perspective, but I want to do this album justice, hence taking 7 months to write out all my thoughts.
This shit is comprehensive and definitely overanalyzed, especially in
Talk that Talk and
Trouble. Each song review will compose of my commentary, noting the details I noticed through months of listening, then a conclusion. Also, mild swearing warning, I like implementing a touch of "French" when I'm very
emotional about something. Anyway, onto the review!
Between 1&2 💞
Album Review
TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED
Talk that Talk 🎙
Producers by collapsedone and MRCH
One of the most perfect TWICE songs.
I think this is one of TWICE’s best-sounding title tracks. Warm modulated synths, a thrumming bass line, distant bells, shimmering synths — the purpose of this song is to be fun and my god is it excellent at it, like, Sana and Chaeyoung are saying knock-knock-knock and beep-beep-beep as if they’re some kind of car. So much fun.
Further along in the verse, Dahyun’s voice sounds so full and smooth with that layered harmony. Tzuyu coming with the
Yes or Yes,
Push & Pull, and
1 to 10 references — these are 5 years of song references. And Jeongyeon closes the pre-chorus accompanied by a rising synth to drop into chorus one. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
The drums accelerate, the synths start blasting, and Jihyo opens to that party of a chorus with her godly vocals,
Tell me what you want
Tell me what you need
A to Z da malhaebwa
But shijageun ireoke have
Talk that Talk ttak han madi
Talk that Talk L-O-V-E
deullyeojweo ooh
Now now now now now yeah~
During Sana's
Talk that Talk~ lines there’s this gentle ascending synth bell that rings with the descending melody and it sounds absolutely gorgeous. And the choreography during that part of the chorus is so so so so fun: the talking hands bit, spelling
L-O-V-E, concluding with the
deullyeojweo ooh! Oh my Jihyo the
deullyeojweo ooh…
Have I mentioned this song is fun?
Speeding through verse 2; Chaeyoung’s part with the cat ears popping in the music video is adorable; Momo her stretching her arms out looks so damn cool; and Dahyun with her replay part sounds so lovely — although I think it sonically sounds a touch random, it makes sense thematically.
And now for this pre-chorus. Mina and Jihyo leading into it sound great BUT JEONGYEON… Now, she is my ult bias, and this pre-chorus sounds almost identical to the first one, but the way she holds that final note, inflecting and holding that
now~ for one more beat before the chorus drops sounds so perfect — the song teeters on a cliff edge. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
Dropping into the second chorus and man the way Nayeon delivers it just hits different. She has this indescribable “pop” voice (I promise this wasn't on purpose) that shouts out loud that
this is THE chorus. This is especially apparent in how both lead their choruses where Jihyo starts at 120% power while Nayeon waits until [
Tell me]
WHAT YOU WANT to full-send it. The production also helps with this effect, cutting out during
what you to emphasize Nayeon's voice before crashing back down, double the pause at Jihyo's intro.
Another
deullyeojweo ooh! Nayeon travels to Narnia, and Mina the engineer strikes again in this heavenly, underwater-esque bridge,
The simple words “I love you”
That’s all I wanna hear
Without hesitation, I’ll go up to you
I’ll make it simple
And just tell you I love you
The word “
love” is said for the first time in the song. There’s a funky keyboard instrument behind Chaeyoung’s part. Jihyo, Chaeyoung, and Nayeon take the initiative in their lyrics, professing their love before closing the bridge.
And now for the pièce-de-résistance: this final double chorus is exceptional — 40 seconds of crack-laced euphoria; Jihyo switches up the chorus and the choreo, Dahyun chimes in with her fluttery
Talk that Talk, Momo comes out of nowhere with
oh yeah it sounds so good! — you’re damn right it does, and this is where the song SOARS.
han beon deo~ haejweo
geurae banggeum geu mal~
Nayeon outright shouts
Tell me what you need and then Jeongyeon sings the above lines in such an ethereal, warm way where the first line ascends while the second descends, causing a lull in the song before the finale with Tzuyu and Nayeon, finishing off the song with the final
deullyeojweo ooh! What a party. What a song.
THE GOOD
- The synths of all time
- The chimes during Talk-that-talk~
- Jeongyeon’s pre-chorus going into Nayeon’s chorus
- Rich harmonies and fun ad-libs
- The entirety of that magical final chorus and outro
Needs Work
- The opening hook (Tell me what you want) and accompanying choreography could be “catchier”
Core Memory
- Singing (and dancing) my heart out when this song played at a K-pop club
Lyrics and theme-wise, if this were to have been TWICE’s last comeback, they’ve once again built upon the theme they've been doing since debut: a Bildungsroman, a coming-of-age story.
This song’s chorus is honest yet simple; it asks the listener, in this case, the other half of the relationship, to be more upfront and open with their love (never be scared of love), that before the relationship can continue and flourish, there has to be a foundation and commitment of love between each other.
TWICE debuted with a song about making your crush go
ooh ahh. Years later, they started pondering
What is Love? and imagining their crush responding with
Yes when asking them out — and now concluding with the phrase
Talk that Talk, [Talk that] L-O-V-E, being upfront with the relationship, wishing their partner to also be happy, to commit to them, to feel the love that they want to impart on them. From gawking like ooh-ahh to talking out your shared love like adults — to having a true relationship between (one and) two.
And can I just say before finishing off
Talk that Talk's review that this is such a fun and repeatable song with many little intricacies hidden in the nonet’s vocals and the song's production. This is the third draft I’m writing about
Talk that Talk and its original word count pretty much quadrupled.
Harkening back to TWICE’s roots by combining mature thinking with youthful character, an incredible ending to look forward to, and just simply being a club-banger that’s easy to listen to,
TTT is an easy 10/10.
WATCH ME GO WATCH ME GO RULE THE WORLD
Queen of Hearts 👑
Produced by LDN Noise
If there was one B-side to promote in a live clip, this was a solid choice.
Helmed by LDN Noise going headlong into the Western boy-group rock-band aesthetic,
Queen of Hearts is a boom-boom-clap song through and through. The drums are very prominent throughout the song, only giving room to riffs of electric guitar in the chorus to drive and continue the momentum of the music.
And speaking of the chorus, vocal line each got a chorus to flex and they did not fuck around,
You ain’t ready for it
Watch me go~ watch me go~
Rule the world
Know you never doubted baby
I’mma go run the whole universe~
Cymbals crashing, drums booming, and 3MIX belting all just so sound so good.
Baby I was born to rule~~
Yeah I’m the Queen, I’m the Queen
And it’s all because of you~~
That I’m the Queen of Hearts
These long, held-out notes performed by Jihyo and Nayeon are simply exquisite. Along with the shredding guitar, the drum set coming in full, and the interludes by Dahyun, Momo, and Chaeyoung, this is the part of the song that always,
always, gives me goosebumps — it sounds so visceral, so energetic, so fun, so triumphant. Boom-boom-clap songs can be hit or miss with people, but there's no denying the payoff from the first part of the chorus to the second part is worth the wait.
The theme of the song so far has been kind of spread around the song. The chorus alludes to it with the line
And it’s all because of you. But Mina shows more sides of it in the second verse, especially with the phrase,
And now that I’m surrounded by all my girls
We be shining bright like diamonds and pearls
It sounds really lovely — in a very cheesy and affectionate kind of way, as it rightfully should — the song is about the girls and their fans. But the bridge is where the song indeed shows its colours
Screaming out my name
See it in the stage lights
Feel so lucky just to have ya
Cause I know deep down I was meant for something bigger! Greater!
I know you’re seeing what I see
Yeah I’ll be everything you need
I know I’m gonna walk the walk
And talk the talk to be~ [the Queen of Hearts]
This is a song CONCEIVED TO BE PERFORMED FOR THE FANS. It’s meant to be loud. It’s meant to be unapologetic. It’s meant to be sappy. And it’s all the more wonderful for it.
This is the TWICEiest shit ever.
Like
Talk that Talk,
Queen of Hearts also has a killer closer. The production already started to grow from the bridge, but now the guitarist finally went Super Saiyan and instead of supporting the drums, they both take the centre stage in tandem.
Then finally, the closing moments of the song even manage to squeeze in some more sappiness.
So thank you for the memories
You’re all the ones who made me~
So thank you for the memories
That I’m the Queen of Hearts
I still can’t believe that this banger is a FAN SONG out of all things. Truly, the TWICEiest shit ever.
THE GOOD
- Adorable fucking lyrics
- Unrelenting, roaring chorus
- English and vocal flex
- Intoxicating guitar riffs
Needs Work
- Chaeyoung rapping in English in their Korean songs somehow slaps harder than her English rapping in their English songs, nonetheless, in QoH, it fits with the sound of the song
Core Memory
- Walking home from a K-pop festival with this song playing, felt like a Queen of Hearts
I love these types of rock songs with how grunge and head-bang-able they are, there is just a certain nostalgic and cheesy quality to them that feels so cozy. I don’t love putting them on repeat, because in this case, I do believe there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Perhaps more shredding, maybe a guitar solo to rock out to, or an accompaniment(!) of ad-libs from 3MIX to support Jihyo’s final chorus? A ONCE can dream of a truly bombastic rock song from TWICE. But then again that distracts from the core of what this song is: a fan song disguised as a rock song.
Queen of Hearts has so much sweetness in its lyrics and message that it's overflowing. The drums, guitar, and vocals can be as loud and intricate as they can, but the theme of this song is what makes it special from TWICE’s other rock songs — it’s a 9/10 for me.
I WANNA WANNA WANNA TAKE YOU TO THE BASICS
Basics 🌈
Lyrics by Chaeyoung
Quite possibly the jammiest (pun intended) song of the album.
A song written by the Strawberry Princess herself — an event similar in frequency to other artists' releases with her last song being 2020’s silky
Handle It —
Basics first starts with an understated and dreamy delivery. After the first stanza, however, a bouncy Miami bass line emerges, revealing the true nature of the song: this is a classic summer bop! Especially in the first rap,
dareun aedeulgwaneun dalla
Ain’t beggin’ for love
nappeun geon anijana ige naraseo
eodiro twilji molla
Like rainbow bubble gum
geureoni nal kkwak butjabadweo
Syllables are pronounced in a relaxed nature, bars often starting with an "ah" sound, flirty lines in English — this rap features a production full of pop with R&B flourishes and, in my opinion, this is Chaeyoung’s bag. Also, the line
rainbow bubblegum is so adorable and so Chaeyoung.
I wanna wanna wanna take it to the Basics
da weonhae weonhae weonhae? seodureuji ma Baby
ppeonhae ppeonhae malhae mweohae da al tende
Ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah
That chorus is pure pop with a Miami bass backing; you better be bopping your head to the melody, if not booty poppin' to the bassline. Chaeyoung loves rhyming in the first half of the chorus to enhance its catchiness and it's damn incredible:
wanna,
weonhae, and
ppeonhae all create these imperfect rhymes that continue momentum without feeling repetitive.
After the very
Boy With Luv-sounding
ah yeah ah yeah, ah yeah ah yeah comes an 8-bar split half and half between Chaeyoung and Momo. Coming from the chorus, the production completely cuts out for the first 2 bars. This adds tension; the song yearns to have that bass beat thumping again and all we have in the audio space in those 2 bars is Chaeyoung spittin' and she delivered.
taneun deut tteugeoun samak wie
yeppeuge pieonan jangmi gata
joshimseure naege dagaol ttae
nado moreuge jjilleobeoril tende
Translating to:
Above the hot, burning desert
It’s like a rose that bloomed beautifully
When you come to me slowly
I will prick you unconsciously
The rap feels slick, effortless, and confident. Her diction remains sharp when enunciating each syllable but she doesn’t let the flow of her rap waver or build as her 4 bars go by, it’s just smooth consistency throughout. Even the lyrics possess an aura of laid-back collectedness that is just so her. The things Chaeyoung can do when given her pen.
THE GOOD
- That sweet summer vibe of a chorus
- The spaceship post-chorus is killer
- Chaeyoung devoured this song
- Sure-footed, confident lyrics
Needs Work
- Perhaps an alteration of that ah yeah ah yeah line
- The way Jihyo did her pre-chorus line is good, but Mina’s is great
Core Memory
- After donating my hair, walking down the rainbow-coloured areas of downtown Toronto with this song playing was very… fitting
This song is summer bliss distilled into 2:56. It’s dreamy, the raps are satisfying, and the ending is charming. I will say that although the second half of the song adds the stunning
spaceship post-choruses and a floaty bridge with an incredible drumbeat drop into the final chorus, the raps of the song make it feel a bit front-loaded. And in an album stacked with awesome finishers, it feels more apparent.
With that said, it’s an 8/10 bop for me. This song is so easy to put on and it feels exactly what Chaeyoung would make if given the reins to produce a pop song all on her own. The lyrics are nonchalant but full of conviction, the wordplay is intricate, and the production playful but not too bombastic — it's just a nice vibe. Songs like
Basics are the standard for good, simple, repeatable pop music and I’m happy that Chaeyoung got to test her pen in this genre.
BABY WE’RE IN TROUBLE TROUBLE
Trouble 💃
Lyrics, vocal direction, and background vocals by Jihyo
Produced by Jihyo and earattack
One of the most enjoyable songs I’ve heard in a while.
There is an underlying tension within the first 4 bars of the song, Jihyo and Nayeon confidently open it to a nondescript array of synths and then the stanza ends, Momo announces
Let’s go, the beat drops and it hits you: this is a club song.
Dahyun's relaxed delivery contrasting with Jeongyeon's staccato flow, the wobbly synth beat mixed with a sprinkle of house piano, Sana dramatically slowing down the song only for Tzuyu to build it back up until the chorus drops,
- Nayeon opens it using a breathy tone, with vocal chops serving as harmonies
- The blooming of the house piano takes centre stage and the song ascends into euphoria
- A random drum roll capped off by a cymbal crash
- Jeongyeon’s growling pronunciation of the word Trouble
- Chaeyoung slyly admitting I like this Trouble
- The entirety of Tzuyu’s tro~oh~oh~ouble yeah~
- Sana using her deep voice for the na~na~na~na
- Jihyo leading the vocals during the synchronized T W I C E chant
This chorus is perfect. Toronto’s residential market needs this song injected into its veins because god damn this song has SO much house in it. And then, ANOTHER KILLING PART: this rap fucking slaps.
gamchweo bwatja geugeon Fake
ppajin hamjeongeun Sweet cake
During the first 2 bars, Chaeyoung is keeping it calm because that trip of a chorus just ended and the song needs a breather, but I don't think anyone expected her to SNAP this hard afterwards:
You cannot resist this
Cannot miss this, such a bliss
Ima put it down down
Oh yeah, better kiss kiss
Below is the structure of her this portion of the rap, I’m not that well versed in this technical aspect of music theory but I digress, this is all in the span of around 5 seconds where it’s:
Triplet-triplet
Quadruplet-triplet
Quadruplet-doublet
Doublet-quadruplet
Now, 25/5 = 5 syllables per second isn’t groundbreaking, but goddamn it these 2 bars sound so nice — if there is one part in this album that I always repeat, it’s this. The addition of that first quadruplet for
cannot miss this in the midst of the triplets sticks out and accelerates the flow of the rap while the following doublets and quadruplets destabilize and slow the rap down as the verse closes. And can I just point out:
THE MAIN VOCALIST WROTE, DIRECTED, AND COMPOSED THIS SONG ‼ Chaeyoung of course delivered the fuck out of her verse but THIS is what you get when you have a member not only write the words they’re saying but also the melody and flow with which they sing it, when that member knows the others so well that when they write a song they know how to make the group exceed. This is what you get when the artists you stan love doing artist shit.
And. AND. That's not all — with how much I mentioned I love a good outro to close a song, this outro slaps as well:
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trouble be-be
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trouble bay-be
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trouble bay-beh
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trou-ble
Like, come on, Nayeon’s imitating a police siren for crying out loud. And this is all after her ad-libs in the final post-chorus; after the pianist going full tilt and playing that piano as if it was their last chance to ever play; after that final
T W I C E chant by all the members come these blissful 20 seconds at the very end. What a song.
THE GOOD
- The theme of relishing in an uncontrolled love
- Sana and Mina’s melody in the pre-chorus
- Whole neighbourhoods full of house
- You cannot resist this, cannot miss this, such a bliss
- Wees and woos
Needs Work
- Mina’s line of falling down, falling down, falling down low in verse 2 feels a bit too abrupt of a change
Core Memory
- While writing Trouble's review I had this song on repeat for my whole subway commute and I must've been so distracting, just head-bopping and being so invested in my enjoyment
Need I say more, easy 9/10. The only reason I place
Talk that Talk above
Trouble is because of what that song represents but besides that, this is one of the best “international” sounds they’ve put out. Actually, I haven’t listened to
Eyes wide open in a while but this song is up there with one of the most sonically pleasing pieces of work they’ve done.
Clubbing TWICE has always been a thing since
TT was birthed in 2016, and has been a staple of their discography since 2019’s
Fancy You and
Feel Special mini albums, but
Trouble unapologetically dives into and fits the house genre so well you’d think that this is TWICE’s bread and butter sound.
Trouble is Jihyo’s magnum opus. What a song.
BRAVE BRAVE BRAVE FOR YOU
Brave 💖
Produced by Slow Rabbit
I first thought this was just a good song, then I read the lyrics.
Gentle guitar plucks, shimmering synths, a distant keyboard in the right ear, in the left a glockenspiel, the melodic
oohs from the members — this song is
PRETTY.
The night that was unusually dark
Above this terrifying world, felt so lonely
The world has grown in the time of wandering
So hard to breathe
Mina and Chaeyoung open the song with how they feel lonely, that it's hard to breathe and now suddenly the song feels bittersweet — I was not expecting the song to become this emotional.
Brave describes a situation where the singer is in a darker place in life and it isn't until another person gives them hope by calling them
Brave that they find the drive to keep going.
Once the chorus hits, the melodies pick up, more guitars get added — there’s even an electric guitar hidden in the mix somewhere, and the song drops the emotional front to reveal a mid-tempo pop song to dance to while crying in the club. The song as a whole still carries this melancholy feeling, but now with the added support of the chorus, acting as a light amongst the gloom.
Continuing on in the second verse there's this gorgeous, well-placed break in the song that just lets it settle after that chorus. Only a seasoned producer would risk this much empty space in a song and Slow Rabbit went to fill those shoes.
Back to the chorus, I'll take this moment to once again commend Slow Rabbit with the mixing of the song, because 4MIX undoubtedly sounds good in the chorus, and the interludes from Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Mina also sound really good, but the clear highlight of the choruses are these lines:
Oh na na na neon nal naige hae
On and on and on
Brave Brave Brave for ya
Oh na na na neon nal sum shwige hae
On and on and on oh trust me babe
Momo, Sana, and Tzuyu form this beautiful, surprisingly catchy, second half of the chorus accompanied by a guitar drop. It should not turn out this well with how conflicting the "
na"s are with the guitar melody but it creates this gentle bopping ebb and flow that feels so lush and mellow.
Diving into the bridge reveals that the listener of the song is revealed not only capable of supporting the singer through direct words but also through their thoughts and dreams. As can be discerned, this can be a song interpreted to be about ONCEs, about how they push TWICE to be their best selves despite the breathless hardships they face. It's a very sweet and touching song.
THE GOOD
- Special lyrics
- Pleasant sound to vibe out to
- That gentle break after the first chorus
- 3MIX poppin' off at the end
- Just very pretty vocals throughout
Needs Work
- Potentially hard to comprehend without translating the Korean lyrics
Core Memory
- Form of Therapy’s life motto revolves around the word “brave” — I don’t know where I got that from, but I remembered it right before watching his album reaction (yes, this is very random)
I’m actually spoiled with the TWICE members’ easy-to-understand songwriting that when a song like this pops up where it's not written by a member and the thematic bits are mostly in Korean, I tend to put it aside in favour of the other songs on the album. And, especially for a song focusing on a theme like this where the English phrases don’t do the Korean lyrics enough justice, it does place a bit of a barrier on the listening experience, dropping it down to a 7/10 from an 8/10.
With that anecdote out of the way, this song is just such a vibe, man. I know that sounds super hippy to say but
Brave is so mellow and smooth that I can’t help but sway a little when that chorus hits. And then I remember what the lyrics say and I tear up a bit on the inside. This song is so pure, raw, and full of heart — we need more songs like these where they just reminisce about life while putting up an upbeat front. Don't mind me just crying while dancing the night away.
With that said, this isn't the first time this theme has been sung by TWICE either, they've long trodden this path of supportive, confiding, up-lifting songs with
Young & Wild,
Rainbow,
Queen,
Go Hard, Depend on You, even this album's
Queen of Hearts, and, of course,
Feel Special.
Brave just adds another on top of an already stacked lineup, unique with its mellow somberness.
Also now feels like a good time to get into my rating system:
- 7/10s are songs are ones that are simply good throughout or great songs with apparent flaws
- 8/10s are great songs with distinct killing parts
- 9/10s are borderline perfect songs where I sometimes can't comprehend how great they are
- And 10/10s are the best of an artist's discography, songs that encapsulate their ethos perfectly or expand upon them in a meaningful way
I SEE THE LIES ON THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUE
Gone 💨
Lyrics by Dahyun
Who the fuck pissed off Dubu this time??
It’s getting quite rare to see TWICE pull off brand new sounds because, with now 190 original songs under their belt as of this review, they’ve done so many genres and sub-genres varying from hyper pop, to bossa nova, to whatever 2020’s
Go Hard is. So it’s surprising to see they’ve still got tricks up their sleeves and
Gone is one of them.
The song starts with strings swinging back and forth and vocal chops dancing from ear to ear, teasing what’s yet to come. Jihyo enters the song with a whisper and the song sets its pace. A stagnant drum pad moves the song along and typical song progression would have Mina continue the build, but — it doesn’t. The song simmers, adding a hint of high hat to the pot. And then Sana and Tzuyu come on and surely the buildup must boil over right?
Silence, until…
I see the LIES on the top of your tongue
The strings emerge again on full blast, the simmer rolls to a boil, and the anger of the song is revealed,
All the fate I had towards you
Fades like a fog, Gone, Gone
Your flipping mind of doing this and that
I’m tired of it, it’s meaningless
In the beginning, it was hard to believe
With that, hatred increases
The singer is so scorned and burned from this relationship that they reminisce about all the effort they’ve put in since the beginning, but their “partner” is so unconcerned that they’ve just about had enough of the relationship altogether.
This has been Dahyun’s thing since 2020’s
Bring It Back, 2021’s
Cruel, 2022’s
That’s all I’m saying, and even 2023's
Don't Blame It On Me — emotionally charged breakup songs that make you feel as if she’s survived through a dozen bad relationships. Dispatch, do try to do your job better.
Another highlight of the song is the post-chorus going into the bridge. This segment reiterates the structure from the first post-chorus — a barrage of drums supported by the rhythmic strumming of a bass guitar along with a consistent synth filling out the soundscape. But this time, it’s Dahyun and Chaeyoung on the rap:
I can’t stand it anymore
My patience, invisible
I can’t find it, it’s all Gone
Even if I try to turn back, it’s too late
There’s no use anymore
It has left, it’s long Gone
You, with flipping mind, you are out
I know that you know what I’m talking about
Nothing you could say that could turn this around
I’m Gone
Building upon the disrespected theme of the song, Dahyun notes that she’s finally had enough with Chaeyoung adding that there’s no point salvaging what love was once there. Momo and Dahyun round it off by telling the listener that there’s no point trying to reason with them or playing naive, they fucked up and there’s no coming back.
Can I just say, it's a bit of a shame that Chaeyoung’s rapping popped off in this album while Dahyun only has this one verse that she shares with Chaeyoung, but it just sounds so good how Dahyun eases in after the chorus with her light rapping tone transitioning into her singing. She even holds the G
one in a little crescendo for some added pizzazz.
And, there’s no way I’m not going to talk about Momo’s vocals in this bridge. Damned if she only got 1 line to use it in, her lower register is incredible. She sounds so smooth singing in this tone. All of TWICE do in particular and there is nary a weak vocal performance in this album.
To close the song off, a wash of synths gets to have their shine in the spotlight, showered with Nayeon’s belting, signifying the dramatic and drawn-out conclusion of this partnership.
THE GOOD
- They’ve still got their surprises
- Thundering chorus
- 2nd rap and bridge combo
- A bitter, crumbling relationship theme
Needs Work
- I’m not a huge fan of the mixing during the first post-chorus, where Momo's vocals were fighting with the production, which is disappointing because Momo is capable of an insane flow
- The post-chorus in general, specifically the first one, can be a bit tiring on repeat listens
Core Memory
- Actually, I think this song sounds like a mix between GOT7's Not By The Moon, BLACKPINK’s Love To Hate Me, and Dahyun’s Bring It Back. I don’t know where I got this thought came from, but it stuck
Going back to that point about the first post-chorus as a whole; songs that have the production continue unchanged into the post-chorus/2nd verse are very hit or miss for me — see TWICE's
Don't Call Me Again for an overbearing example. The post-chorus going into the bridge contrasts Dahyun’s light tone nicely with the hard-hitting production, continuing the energy until it slowly fades into silence at the end of the bridge.
Back to the song as a whole, as much as TWICE has been experimenting with their sound for the past 4 years now, I’m happy they’re still finding new ways to explore what they’re capable of. And for that alone, even though I’m not a big fan of songs like these where they rely on sounding “big”, Dahyun’s lyricism and the thrill I receive every time I indulge myself in this song elevates it to an 8/10. Keep on breaking hearts, Dubu.
INVINCIBLE SUPERHEROES
When We Were Kids 🧸
Lyrics by Dahyun
Press play to reminisce, pull up lyrics to cry.
This song is so beautiful. I’m totally not writing this song review, crying on the bus reminiscing about my childhood, while just having turned 21. I don’t know if these are happy or sad tears but this song is so beautiful either way.
Warm synths, muted piano, a gentle high hat, the younger members starting off the song — this has to be up there for one of the softest TWICE songs ever. And as it should, it’s one of the TWICEiest songs ever. And then Nayeon comes in:
Invincible superheroes, we wanted to be adults
To the higher, clearer world
The chords start swelling, the high hat keeps pace, and the harmonies pour in.
Remember When We Were Kids
When We Were Kids, we didn’t know
If we could go back
I will love it even more
Remember When We Were Kids
Jihyo takes up the second half of the chorus as it drops, trading the strings for an almost R&B synth production — if choir R&B takes off, this song started it. The song relishes in this cacophony of warm sounds until returning to its sparse and peaceful verses.
This time, the hints of piano are louder, little twinkling synths begin to shimmer, the drum buildup comes and Jeongyeon drives the song straight into the chorus. No time for the strings to build like in Nayeon’s — this song loves its chorus so much.
And I'll just take this time to appreciate the amount and range of Jeongyeon vocals in this album. Her voice is so textured, stable, and projected — but also more tender and soft compared to the more pronounced tones of Nayeon and Jihyo.
The bridge comes in, repeating the phrase:
I wish that I could meet
Could meet the younger me
Giving the song time to rest, before building back up to the last chorus — this time led by Jihyo, completing the 3MIX trifecta. And interestingly enough, Chaeyoung follows up in the second half of the chorus, rather than another member of the vocal line. She really did pop off in this album.
As the last chorus begins to close, the percussion at its strongest, the harmonies on blast, the background vocals cranked up to their Sunday best, is the song going to end? Of course not! This is an album full of banger endings as if the songs don’t want to end, and
When We Were Kids being the album closer very much indulges in that feeling.
After a brief refrain, accented by Nayeon’s high note with a touch of vibrato, the song almost dives back into a fourth chorus. Nayeon and Jeongyeon harmonize — a rare and heavenly moment. And the song repeats the bridge, reiterating that they want to meet their younger selves, this time with the lush chorus production before closing with silence, a few piano notes, and Tzuyu singing the last line of the song:
Oh, we were kids
Reflection, acceptance, hope. What a song.
THE GOOD
- Heavenly vocals throughout
- Relatable, heartfelt lyrics
- Euphoric chorus
- Great closer to the album
Needs Work
- Refrain after the last chorus, Back When We Were Kids, could’ve been executed better
Core Memory
- For an album titled Between 1&2, I don’t think anything hits harder than finishing the song reviews, with this song in particular, during your 21st birthday
I wrote the first part of this review in November 2022. Then university, life, and other things got in the way of my headspace for me to feel confident about wrapping all of this up. In a way, I felt like I just didn’t want this review to end because of the joy that writing gives me — I didn’t want the happiness to end. And then it hit me, after watching a YouTuber rank animated movies and them placing
Spirited Away at the top and explaining 'why' reminded me of just how important growing up is, and by extension this song.
This theme is important for both the rookie TWICE members in 2015 and the teenagers who would follow their journey and grow up with them, facing life’s obstacles along the way. Hardships that used to only involve family, crushes, and social media, evolve into work, commitments and all the struggles that adult life brings. Being a kid and enjoying the simple things in life is one of the most sought-after moments we want to relive because we took growing up for granted. The only thing we can do now is look back on ourselves with fondness and rose-tinted lenses.
TWICE’s original meaning was to resonate with people through their senses and their hearts. That was during their debut, and I think it still holds up today. In my opinion, touching people through their emotions is what TWICE does best and makes them one of K-pop’s all-time greats. It was never about having the best numbers — it was about being the best idols. And to think that this journey of maturation and growth would occur from 2015 all the way to this song, being a fitting nod to TWICE’s 7th anniversary, I don’t think anyone at the company nor the group would ever imagine that they would get this far. It’s these nine women or none — 9/10.
This song honestly deserves a 10/10 with how much I noticed other people reminiscing their childhoods after I heard this song, it is such a widely-relatable message, but I am determined to limit myself to one 10/10 song per album and if I were to pick between
TTT and WWWK, I'd give it to the one's that's more repeatable —
Talk that Talk just has this electric energy about it.
Epilogue
And finally here is the end. If you made it in one sitting then I commend you, because I could not write this mess in one sitting. As alluded to, I started writing this album review sometime in October, after a series of edits the first draft was finished in March, and now here's the final draft in June.
I love this album. It got me through some important parts of my life, both good and bad, and it's just a wonderful listen throughout. Reliving this album again before finally completing the review has been an exciting journey.
Brave hit me harder this time, after being overshadowed by the other gems of this album, and
WWWK finally got me to tear up and not just be emotionally satisfied.
I feel like there's something for everyone on this album. From the exhilarating thrills of
TTT to the anthemic euphoria of
QoH, the clubbing dichotomy of
Trouble and
Brave to the blissful glee of
Basics, and the sweet reminiscence of
WWWK to the thundering anger that is
Gone. Like
Eyes wide open, I liken
Between 1&2 to a pop music taste platter — there's such an eclectic mix of pop music in this album that there's bound to be a song that someone will love, like, and dislike.
Is this album perfect? I don't think so, but it's close — it was certainly my 2022 AOTY. Was this review biased? Absolutely. I've been a fan since 2019 and with the themes in this album, I also feel like it was biased towards me as a ONCE. And how would I rank the album in TWICE's catalogue? It's honestly at the top, at least with EPs — I also felt that way towards
Feel Special but then this album was birthed so I'm excited for TWICE's future.
Ready To Be was also a stunning album and
Eyes wide open frankly also deserved the spotlight that
Formula of Love received so I might hit those next but no promises; this album took long enough to bake.
As for the performances, I've only seen Twitter clips (no fancams to not spoil myself) and I am SO EXCITED to finally see them in July.
QoH was as glorious as expected,
Brave was a delightful surprise, and
WWWK, while not being the concert closer everyone expected it to be, paired up nicely with
Crazy Stupid Love. And of course the bombastic addition of the dance break to
TTT. But, this is not a concert review, and here is where this album review ends.
Feel free to comment with any thoughts regarding the album, other TWICE albums, and any suggestions for my writing in general. Congrats again on making it this far!
God, I love this album.

2023.06.05 04:33 Tangou-888 The Hoax Story of Remarkable Testimony of a Buddhist monk in Myanmar (Burma) (Part III)
___________________________________________________ Taken from http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2008/12/14/when_jesus_met_buddha/ for the intellectual discussion purposely. Not for commercial gain When Jesus met Buddha Something remarkable happened when evangelists for two great religions crossed paths more than 1,000 years ago: they got along By Philip Jenkins December 14, 2008 While few mainline Christians would put the matter in such confrontational terms, any religion claiming exclusive access to truth has real difficulties reconciling other great faiths into its cosmic scheme. Most Christian churches hold that Jesus alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and many also feel an obligation to carry that message to the world's unbelievers. But this creates a fundamental conflict with the followers of famous spiritual figures like Mohammed or Buddha, who preached radically different messages. Drawing on a strict interpretation of the Bible, some Christians see these rival faiths as not merely false, but as deliberate traps set by the forces of evil. Being intolerant of other religions - consigning them to hell, in fact - may be bad enough in its own right, but it increasingly has real- world consequences. As trade and technology shrink the globe, so different religions come into ever-closer contact with one another, and the results can be bloody: witness the apocalyptic assaults in Mumbai. In such a world, teaching different faiths to acknowledge one another's claims, to live peaceably together side by side, stops being a matter of good manners and becomes a prerequisite for human survival. Over the past 30 years, the Roman Catholic Church has faced repeated battles over this question of Christ's uniqueness, and has cracked down on thinkers who have made daring efforts to accommodate other world religions. While the Christian dialogue with Islam has attracted most of the headlines, it is the encounters with Hinduism and especially Buddhism that have stirred the most controversy within the church. Sri Lankan theologians Aloysius Pieris and Tissa Balasuriya have had many run-ins with Vatican critics, and, more recently, the battle has come to American shores. Last year, the Vatican ordered an investigation of Georgetown University's Peter Phan, a Jesuit theologian whose main sin, in official eyes, has been to treat the Buddhism of his Vietnamese homeland as a parallel path to salvation. Following the ideas of Pope Benedict XVI, though, the church refuses to give up its fundamental belief in the unique role of Christ. In a widely publicized open letter to Italian politician Marcello Pera, Pope Benedict declared that "an inter-religious dialogue in the strict sense of the term is not possible." By all means, he said, we should hold conversations with other cultures, but not in a way that acknowledges other religions as equally valid. While the Vatican does not of course see the Buddha as a demon, it does fear the prospect of syncretism, the dilution of Christian truth in an unholy mixture with other faiths. Beyond doubt, this view places Benedict in a strong tradition of Christianity as it has developed in Europe since Roman times. But there is another, ancient tradition, which suggests a very different course. Europe's is not the only version of the Christian faith, nor is it necessarily the oldest heir of the ancient church. For more than 1,000 years, other quite separate branches of the church established thriving communities across Asia, and in their sheer numbers, these churches were comparable to anything Europe could muster at the time. These Christian bodies traced their ancestry back not through Rome, but directly to the original Jesus movement of ancient Palestine. They moved across India, Central Asia, and China, showing no hesitation to share - and learn from - the other great religions of the East. Just how far these Christians were prepared to go is suggested by a startling symbol that appeared on memorials and stone carvings in both southern India and coastal China during the early Middle Ages. We can easily see that the image depicts a cross, but it takes a moment to realize that the base of the picture - the root from which the cross is growing - is a lotus flower, the symbol of Buddhist enlightenment. In modern times, most mainstream churches would condemn such an amalgam as a betrayal of the Christian faith, an example of multiculturalism run wild. Yet concerns about syncretism did not bother these early Asian Christians, who called themselves Nasraye, Nazarenes, like Jesus's earliest followers. They were comfortable associating themselves with the other great monastic and mystical religion of the time, and moreover, they believed that both lotus and cross carried similar messages about the quest for light and salvation. If these Nazarenes could find meaning in the lotus-cross, then why can't modern Catholics, or other inheritors of the faith Jesus inspired? Many Christians are coming to terms with just how thoroughly so many of their fundamental assumptions will have to be rethought as their faith today becomes a global religion. Even modern church leaders who know how rapidly the church is expanding in the global South tend to see European values and traditions as the indispensable norm, in matters of liturgy and theology as much as music and architecture. Yet the reality is that Christianity has from its earliest days been an intercontinental faith, as firmly established in Asia and Africa as in Europe itself. When we broaden our scope to look at the faith that by 800 or so stretched from Ireland to Korea, we see the many different ways in which Christians interacted with other believers, in encounters that reshaped both sides. At their best, these meetings allowed the traditions not just to exchange ideas but to intertwine in productive and enriching ways, in an awe-inspiring chapter of Christian history that the Western churches have all but forgotten. To understand this story, we need to reconfigure our mental maps. When we think of the growth of Christianity, we think above all of Europe. We visualize a movement growing west from Palestine and Syria and spreading into Greece and Italy, and gradually into northern regions. Europe is still the center of the Catholic Church, of course, but it was also the birthplace of the Protestant denominations that split from it. For most of us, even speaking of the "Eastern Church" refers to another group of Europeans, namely to the Orthodox believers who stem from the eastern parts of the continent. English Catholic thinker Hilaire Belloc once proclaimed that "Europe is the Faith; and the Faith is Europe." But in the early centuries other Christians expanded east into Asia and south into Africa, and those other churches survived for the first 1,200 years or so of Christian history. Far from being fringe sects, these forgotten churches were firmly rooted in the oldest traditions of the apostolic church. Throughout their history, these Nazarenes used Syriac, which is close to Jesus' own language of Aramaic, and they followed Yeshua, not Jesus. No other church - not Roman Catholics, not Eastern Orthodox - has a stronger claim to a direct inheritance from the earliest Jesus movement. The most stunningly successful of these eastern Christian bodies was the Church of the East, often called the Nestorian church. While the Western churches were expanding their influence within the framework of the Roman Empire, the Syriac-speaking churches colonized the vast Persian kingdom that ruled from Syria to Pakistan and the borders of China. From their bases in Mesopotamia - modern Iraq - Nestorian Christians carried out their vast missionary efforts along the Silk Route that crossed Central Asia. By the eighth century, the Church of the East had an extensive structure across most of central Asia and China, and in southern India. The church had senior clergy - metropolitans - in Samarkand and Bokhara, in Herat in Afghanistan. A bishop had his seat in Chang'an, the imperial capital of China, which was then the world's greatest superpower. When Nestorian Christians were pressing across Central Asia during the sixth and seventh centuries, they met the missionaries and saints of an equally confident and expansionist religion: Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhists too wanted to take their saving message to the world, and launched great missions from India's monasteries and temples. In this diverse world, Buddhist and Christian monasteries were likely to stand side by side, as neighbors and even, sometimes, as collaborators. Some historians believe that Nestorian missionaries influenced the religious practices of the Buddhist religion then developing in Tibet. Monks spoke to monks. In presenting their faith, Christians naturally used the cultural forms that would be familiar to Asians. They told their stories in the forms of sutras, verse patterns already made famous by Buddhist missionaries and teachers. A stunning collection of Jesus Sutras was found in caves at Dunhuang, in northwest China. Some Nestorian writings draw heavily on Buddhist ideas, as they translate prayers and Christian services in ways that would make sense to Asian readers. In some texts, the Christian phrase "angels and archangels and hosts of heaven" is translated into the language of buddhas and devas. One story in particular suggests an almost shocking degree of collaboration between the faiths. In 782, the Indian Buddhist missionary Prajna arrived in Chang'an, bearing rich treasures of sutras and other scriptures. Unfortunately, these were written in Indian languages. He consulted the local Nestorian bishop, Adam, who had already translated parts of the Bible into Chinese. Together, Buddhist and Christian scholars worked amiably together for some years to translate seven copious volumes of Buddhist wisdom. Probably, Adam did this as much from intellectual curiosity as from ecumenical good will, and we can only guess about the conversations that would have ensued: Do you really care more about relieving suffering than atoning for sin? And your monks meditate like ours do? These efforts bore fruit far beyond China. Other residents of Chang'an at this very time included Japanese monks, who took these very translations back with them to their homeland. In Japan, these works became the founding texts of the great Buddhist schools of the Middle Ages. All the famous movements of later Japanese history, including Zen, can be traced to one of those ancient schools and, ultimately - incredibly - to the work of a Christian bishop. By the 12th century, flourishing churches in China and southern India were using the lotus-cross. The lotus is a superbly beautiful flower that grows out of muck and slime. No symbol could better represent the rise of the soul from the material, the victory of enlightenment over ignorance, desire, and attachment. For 2,000 years, Buddhist artists have used the lotus to convey these messages in countless paintings and sculptures. The Christian cross, meanwhile, teaches a comparable lesson, of divine victory over sin and injustice, of the defeat of the world. Somewhere in Asia, Yeshua's forgotten followers made the daring decision to integrate the two emblems, which still today forces us to think about the parallels between the kinds of liberation and redemption offered by each faith. Christianity, for much of its history, was just as much an Asian religion as Buddhism. Asia's Christian churches survived for more than a millennium, and not until the 10th century, halfway through Christian history, did the number of Christians in Europe exceed that in Asia. What ultimately obliterated the Asian Christians were the Mongol invasions, which spread across Central Asia and the Middle East from the 1220s onward. From the late 13th century, too, the world entered a terrifying era of climate change, of global cooling, which severely cut food supplies and contributed to mass famine. The collapse of trade and commerce crippled cities, leaving the world much poorer and more vulnerable. Intolerant nationalism wiped out Christian communities in China, while a surging militant Islam destroyed the churches of Central Asia. But awareness of this deep Christian history contributes powerfully to understanding the future of the religion, as much as its past. For long centuries, Asian Christians kept up neighborly relations with other faiths, which they saw not as deadly rivals but as fellow travelers on the road to enlightenment. Their worldview differed enormously from the norms that developed in Europe. To take one example, we are used to the idea of Christianity operating as the official religion of powerful states, which were only too willing to impose a particular orthodoxy upon their subjects. Yet when we look at the African and Asian experience, we find millions of Christians whose normal experience was as minorities or even majorities within nations dominated by some other religion. Struggling to win hearts and minds, leading churches had no option but to frame the Christian message in the context of non-European intellectual traditions. Christian thinkers did present their message in the categories of Buddhism - and Taoism, and Confucianism - and there is no reason why they could not do so again. When modern scholars like Peter Phan try to place Christianity in an Asian and Buddhist context, they are resuming a task begun at least 1,500 years ago. Perhaps, in fact, we are looking at our history upside down. Some day, future historians might look at the last few hundred years of Euro- American dominance within Christianity and regard it as an unnatural interlude in a much longer story of fruitful interchange between the great religions. Consider the story told by Timothy, a patriarch of the Nestorian church. Around 800, he engaged in a famous debate with the Muslim caliph in Baghdad, a discussion marked by reason and civility on both sides. Imagine, Timothy said, that we are all in a dark house, and someone throws a precious pearl in the midst of a pile of ordinary stones. Everyone scrabbles for the pearl, and some think they've found it, but nobody can be sure until day breaks. In the same way, he said, the pearl of true faith and wisdom had fallen into the darkness of this transitory world; each faith believed that it alone had found the pearl. Yet all he could claim - and all the caliph could say in response - was that some faiths thought they had enough evidence to prove that they were indeed holding the real pearl, but the final truth would not be known in this world. Knowing other faiths firsthand grants believers an enviable sophistication, founded on humility. We could do a lot worse than to learn from what we sometimes call the Dark Ages. 2023.06.05 04:27 TheLionQueen2020 Documentary analysis for qual study. Help?
Hello folks,
First, I want to mention that I have discussed (and continue to discuss) what I am about to write with my advisor and thesis committee. So I'm just trying to have other perspectives on this. So, I'm currently recruiting participants for my doctoral research. It's a qual study.According to my advisor, after one semester of recruitment, I'm missing about half of the participants that I need to have enough data for a doctoral degree. Therefore, I am giving myself until the end of 2023 to complete recruitment (fingers-crossed!)
Recruitment is the most exciting part of research because we meet people and listen to what they tell us. But, at the same time, it's part of the research process over which researchers have less control which can be stressful.
I'm writing the few thesis chapters I can write simultaneously (for example, the literature review chapter). But unfortunately, I can't write the chapters that require the data yet (for example, the Results or Discussion chapters).
My advisor suggested that I analyze already public documents to complete the data from the semi-directed interviews.I don't want to give too many details about my research topic because I'm not particularly eager to doxx myself haha.
However, feel free to DM me if you need more information.I'm just scratching my head about what could count as an analysis.
I've considered newspaper articles, archives from organizations or grey literature research reports. But concretely, data from these would be extremely scarce and difficult to work with from a methodological point of view due to the nature of the topic I'm working on. It's a very "niche" topic.
Is there any other material that could count for documentary analysis for a qualitative study?

2023.06.05 04:27 dlschindler The Grave In The Green Belt
I ventured through the realm of the forgotten, a solitary wanderer treading the fringes of a world I could never truly call my own. Each step propelled me deeper into the heart of isolation, where extravagant condos belonging to the wealthy loomed on one side, and the impeccably groomed greens of an exclusive golf course stretched out on the other. Beyond was the sound, a channeled sea of islands and foggy weather. Sandwiched between them, an enigmatic patch of forest concealed its secrets, a barrier between opulence and the untamed.
A bone-chilling fog rolled in, veiling the nearby islands in an eerie cloak of mystery. The islands, silent and enigmatic, whispered their secrets to those who dared listen. But on this night, I had more immediate concerns that demanded my attention.
My footsteps led me towards what I knew was my path.
The forest itself seemed out of place, a remnant of untamed wilderness amidst the refined elegance of the condos and the pristine golf course. It was a forgotten corner of nature, hidden away from prying eyes, its secrets locked within its ancient trees and shadowy depths.
It was within this eerie thicket, nestled amidst the extravagant neighborhood and the tranquil sea adorned with fog-shrouded islands, that I stumbled upon a chilling discovery. Max, my loyal canine companion who had accompanied me on countless escapades, led me to a hidden grave. A heavy air of unease settled around us, and a shiver ran down my spine, for I realized I had inadvertently stepped into a dark and foreboding nightmare. Some nightmares are not cleared away in the morning light.
The forest floor was strewn with golf balls, their presence a strange incongruity against the backdrop of towering trees and decaying foliage. But it was the horror that awaited me that truly shattered any sense of normalcy. As Max began to unearth the enigma hidden beneath the earth, an ominous atmosphere descended upon our surroundings, setting the warming orchestra of my thoughts for a descent into madness.
Max began scratching at the ground, his paws kicking up small clouds of dirt. I watched him with trepidation, unsure of what he had stumbled upon. And then, the truth emerged amidst the chaos of his excavation. The forest floor, already littered with golf balls, revealed an even more unsettling sight—a skeletal hand, its bony fingers clutching a weathered club.
As Max continued to dig, my unease grew, and I could no longer ignore the foreboding sense that something terrible was about to unfold. Suddenly, a chorus of guttural voices pierced through the silence, their chilling tones mingling with the rustle of leaves and the distant crash of waves against the tranquil sea.
We huddled in the dense thicket, our hearts pounding against our ribcages like captive beasts. The air grew thick with fear and the stench of decay emanating from the newly discovered grave, just a few feet away. Max, his hackles raised, stood beside me, his eyes fixed on the abyss of the forest.
The feeling of being hunted made us hide, readied us to run. Somehow they knew that we had found their secret. Perhaps the hunters were as sensitive to fate as I.
The nightmare began with a hail of arrows, raining down from above like deadly specks of darkness. I dodged and weaved, desperately seeking cover from the onslaught. The masked men, their eyes burning with malevolence, closed in on me with flashlights in hand, casting grotesque shadows against the fog-laden trees.
A thrown bottle exploded at my feet, glass shattering and cutting into my flesh. The searing pain only fueled my adrenaline-fueled flight. The hunters pursued, their footsteps thundering behind me, accompanied by their mocking laughter and sadistic jeers.
Then, a gunshot shattered the night, its sound resonating through the forest. The other men shouted in anger, chastising the gunman for his recklessness. Chaos intensified, and I felt a tomahawk cartwheel past my ear, missing me by a hair's breadth.
In the midst of the chaos, my heart ached for Max. He had vanished into the depths of the woods, drawn away by something I couldn't fathom. I wanted to run, to escape the approaching vehicles and the hunters who sought to claim me, but I couldn't abandon my faithful companion.
Seconds turned into minutes, and minutes stretched into an agonizing eternity. The sound of vehicles grew louder, the hunters drawing closer. I was terrified and heartbroken, my mind torn between saving myself and waiting for Max.
Just as I was about to abandon hope, a shadow emerged from the gloom. It was Max, bounding toward me with a wagging tail and a glimmer of relief in his eyes. Tears of gratitude welled in my eyes as I called out to him, and he joined me, his presence reinforcing my resolve to flee this nightmarish pursuit.
With renewed determination, Max and I sprinted through the tangled underbrush, the relentless pursuit of the hunters driving us forward. Our hearts beat in sync as we raced against the encroaching darkness.
I followed Max, as he seemed to know the way - having run ahead and found our escape.
The forest seemed to conspire against us, its twisted branches reaching out like skeletal hands, ready to ensnare us in its malevolent embrace. The undergrowth became a treacherous obstacle course, threatening to trip us up with every step. But Max, ever the loyal companion, guided me through the labyrinth of shadows, his senses honed to navigate this haunting realm.
As we sprinted, our breaths ragged and desperate, the pursuing hunters closed in, their footsteps growing louder and more menacing. The sounds of their jeers and taunts echoed through the trees, a symphony of sadism that chilled me to the core.
Then, as if the forest itself decided to aid our escape, a hidden trail materialized before us. It beckoned, a sliver of hope cutting through the suffocating darkness. With no time to spare, we veered onto the path, our feet pounding against the earth, propelled by a surge of adrenaline.
The trail wound deeper into the heart of the forgotten forest, twisting and turning like a serpent, as if playing a wicked game with our pursuers. Shadows danced around us, their elongated forms whispering malevolent secrets. The air grew colder, biting into my skin, and an otherworldly hush settled over the land, as if the very essence of nature held its breath, aware of the horror unfolding within its domain.
A fog reached up from the cliffs as we ran under the open moonlight. We were exposed to our predators, yet the fog came and made us invisible to them. As we reached the other side of the cliffs and more forest, the seaside abandoned us and the fog retreated naturally.
As we raced along the path, the distant sound of crashing waves began to fade, replaced by an eerie silence broken only by the haunting calls of nocturnal creatures. Fear and exhaustion threatened to overtake us, but the thought of what awaited us at the hands of the hunters fueled our determination.
The path abruptly opened up into a clearing, bathed in an ethereal glow. Moonlight filtered through a gap in the dense foliage, casting an otherworldly radiance on a weathered stone structure that stood at the clearing's center. It was a forgotten shrine, forgotten by time and those who once paid homage to its mysterious deity.
A surge of both trepidation and desperate hope coursed through me as I realized that this shrine might hold the key to our salvation. With no time to second-guess, we approached the ancient structure, its moss-covered stones seemingly pulsating with an unknown energy.
As I stepped onto the sacred ground, an unsettling stillness fell over the clearing. Max's hackles rose, his gaze fixated on the shrine's mossy entrance. A primal instinct warned us of the ancient forces at play, but we had come too far to turn back.
Summoning all the courage within me, I pushed open the heavy stone door, revealing a chamber shrouded in darkness. A chill wind swept through the entrance, carrying whispers of forgotten incantations and the scent of decay.
With hesitant steps, we ventured into the unknown depths of the shrine, our hearts pounding in our chests. The walls seemed to close in, suffocating us with a weighty anticipation. The air grew dense with an ancient power, the residue of rituals long forgotten.
A dim light flickered at the center of the chamber, drawing us closer like moths to a flame. We stood trembling, almost forgetting our dire escape. Max began a low growl that broke into a frightened whine.
From the depths of the chamber, a haunting wail erupted, resonating with the agony of centuries past. Shadows coalesced into a towering figure, its eyes blazing with an otherworldly fire. It was the wrathful spirit of the forest itself, determined to protect its secrets at any cost.
Max barked, a valiant act of defiance in the face of an unstoppable force. I stood my ground, clutching my pack, and mustered all the courage I had left. In a trembling voice, I spoke words of remorse and reverence, offering appeasement to the vengeful spirit.
"We're drawn here...to see the grave...to escape its makers."
A hush fell over the chamber as the deity listened, its wrath subsiding, if only momentarily. In a voice that echoed through my mind, it issued a warning—a warning to never return to this forsaken realm, to leave the secrets of the forgotten forest buried in the past.
It wasn't in words, it was just a feeling. I knew what it wanted, and so did Max. It had made itself clear. It would spare us only if we abandoned our trespasses.
With a final glance back at the shrine, Max and I fled, propelled by a newfound urgency. The pursuing hunters were nowhere to be seen, as if swallowed by the very darkness they sought to unleash upon us.
As we emerged from the clutches of the haunted forest, the first rays of morning painted the sky, casting a golden hue upon our weary faces. We had escaped the clutches of the forgotten, forever marked by the consequences of horror that we had personally experienced.

2023.06.05 04:20 BoringInvestigator88 Mental Check In Day 79: gratitude, roadblocks, questions and more beasts to slay
I took the free PP1 today because I really wanted to know where I stand. Happy to share that I made a significant improvement despite initial technical difficulties etc
V160 Q163 VR Section 3 - 16/20
VR Section 5 - 12/20
QR Section 2 - 18/20
QR Section 4 - 17/20
Quant: felt like there was a lot of things to that relied on knowledge of integers intervals, geometry interior vs exterior angles. Will finish up
u/gregmat prepswift then gobble up the OG. And really write out a map later to have smth to glance through
Verbal: managed to improve on my verbal. Improved from 154 to 160. Nearly cried knowing how much I “fought” through life, full time work, house work and care taking for my my parent’s cancer and appointments stuff to make this happen. That said I have a lot of work to do here. Memorising vocab more thoroughly, reviewing prepswift TC and reviewing PP1 errors
Technical issue: I am using a Mac and I needed to download a partition of sorts to download a windows only app to run the test. This took me 2 hours of pure panic
Immediate Problem, Advice needed : I applied for test accommodations awhile back and filed my docs in about 3 weeks but haven’t heard back.
Q1 Do I have to call them as they don’t seem very helpful over?
Q2 Also
how do I review my practice in reality. Feels like once the session ends. I can’t exit.
Q3 And
for AWA is there a score given ?? I really wrote the test for real so I was keen to know where I stand as I saw an evidence question instead of the typical question prompt
Any advice to cross beyond from 160 onwards for verbal and quant esp quant Q4 apart from what I mentioned, I am trying to retrace my steps to see what else I should have done better and really think how I can specifically improve by focusing on skills -> probably one of (many and) best takeaway from
u/gregmat In reality trying to get a higher quant score but I am happy at the moment with my current verbal leap given how much I have been pulling my hair at RC and CR and had to grapple with stones life threw at me without warning :(
Q5 Also how much more difficult is the real GRE than PP1?
Q6 Also is it true PP1 intentionally depresses our scores down?
