2023.06.10 05:54 Theeaglestrikes I bought a disturbing Choose-Your-Own-Adventure ripoff called “Journey to the Lake”, and the events are unfolding in real life.

Since my wife died last year, I’ve been travelling across the UK in a decked-out van with my son, Sam. We’ve been heading up to Inverness, his mother’s favourite place, in the hope of scattering her ashes. It’s no surprise, then, that I’m a lover of adventures, is it? Journey to the Lake Choose Your End I picked it up from a charity store yesterday. A hardback novel with a tattered paper cover. Whilst some knock-offs are a little cringe-worthy, I was intrigued by this one. Minuscule white writing on an all-black cover. The stark, sinister minimalism of the art really gripped me. Plus, I have fond memories of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books from Sam’s childhood. But “Journey to the Lake” seemed a little more mature than the stories I remembered. Choose Your End The title alone seemed bleak, but I didn’t know the half of it. “You reach a crossroads… Uh oh,” Sam said, chuckling as he read the book aloud. “What?” I asked, smiling. “Time to make our first decision,” He replied. “Leave this to me,” I said, cracking my neck decisively. Sam groaned. “Dad, no. You always made the worst decisions with these books back in the day.” “I know,” I said. “Mum was always the smart one. I was the beauty, and she was the brains.” Sam shook his head, before clearing his throat and leaning into the light above the van’s front dashboard. He read with the giddiness of a child. Of course, even at the age of 19, he’s still a child to me. “Pick the safest path to the lake,” Sam read. “Take the road to Yellow Town. Page 11. Or take the road to Brickrock. Page 43.” “Yellow Town!” I exuberantly requested. Sam, being a people-pleasing saint, rolled his eyes and obliged. He flicked through the pages of the dusty, unbranded book and settled on Page 11. To summarise, the road took our character to Yellow Town, a seemingly-serene place with a sinister history. It was haunted by the Seafarer, a stranger who was hanged for slaughtering seven townsfolk. And his ghost, donning a black raincoat, stalked the protagonist. “Oh, so it’s that kind of story,” I said, smiling. “I thought we would be going on a fantastical adventure with dragons and fairies,” Sam gulped. “Maybe the Seafarer has a magical boat?” I suggested, smirking. “Okay… I’m gonna stop there. I’m tired,” Sam said. “Or scared?” I teased. “Well, if you want to stop reading so early, I might as well carry on driving to Carlisle. You okay with that? We could treat ourselves to a hotel, rather than kipping in the van.” Sam shrugged. “Sure. Just wake me in a couple of hours.” But I woke him far earlier than that. You see, we never made it to Carlisle. “Welcome to Joune...?” I whispered, squinting to read the road sign for a town I hadn’t seen on the GPS. The sign might’ve said something else, but it was dark, and one of the letters had faded. I was more concerned with the neat rows of structures that rushed towards us on either side of the road. Quaint cottages, shops, and other quintessential British buildings — but they were all various shades of yellow. Like the town in the book. A strange coincidence. But then, in one of the house’s upper windows, I briefly saw something which glued the flesh of my hands to the steering wheel. A man in a black raincoat. Watching. Journey to the Lake was on my brain, so it had to be confirmation bias. That was what I told myself. Sam laughed when I woke him and explained the situation. He said the tables had turned — suddenly, I was the scaredy-pants. I thought he might be right. “Room for two?” Asked the hotel receptionist at a little B&B in the middle of the town. “Yes, please,” I said. “Two singles, mind.” Sam rolled his eyes — his favourite response to my humorous quips. The receptionist merely nodded and handed over a key. “Room 11. The end,” She said. “Beg your pardon?” I asked in a hoarse whisper, suddenly perturbed by the receptionist’s uneven tone of voice. “The end of the corridor,” She clarified, offering a false smile. “You can’t miss it.” Sam and I practically sleep-walked to our room in the early hours of the morning, but I was overcome by a strange sense of alertness when I plopped onto my bed. I wish I hadn’t remedied that with the following idea. “I’m gonna read a little more,” I said, pulling the book out of my backpack. Sam groaned. “Why did you bring that in here?” I found myself unable to crack one of my usual jokes. “I just have to know what happens next.” Weary from your travels, you graciously accept the keys from the innkeeper. “Room 11. The end,” She says. How? How could the boom have known? Heart gripped by the terrifying and inexplicable sensation of suddenly being watched, I stopped reading. “Ha, ha,” Sam sarcastically grumbled. “I’m going to sleep.” “Read it for yourself,” I shuddered, hurling the book at him. My son sat up and read the page for himself. “Is this one of your jokes? First, the yellow buildings. Now, a scripted conversation?” “You were there in the shop with me. I found the book. I didn’t write it,” I said. “I think we need to go.” A booming sound echoed along the hotel corridor, and goosebumps bubbled across my icy flesh. I’d never been so frightened in my life, but I summoned the bravery to stumble over to the door. “You hear a thunderous creak in the hallway,” Sam read. “Gazing through the peephole, you see…” I didn’t need my son to finish the sentence — yet again, the book had predetermined my actions. And through the peephole of the hotel door, I saw something horrifying. The man in the black raincoat stood in the hallway, one eye peering into the peephole from the other side — as if he could see me. He was warped by the curvature of the glass into a horrifically large, malformed man. Or maybe those were his true dimensions. And there was no accounting for his lifeless, sagging skin. That was surely no trickery of the glass. I screamed, stumbling backwards from the door. “Head into the hallway. Page 59. Exit through the window. Page 115. Dad, what is this?” Sam quivered, seemingly understanding, at long last, that I was not playing a cruel joke. “Page 115, right?” I asked, turning and running over to the window. Sam nodded, leaping to his feet and frantically flipping through the pages as I pulled the curtains open. Fortunately, we were on the ground floor, and the window opened wide enough for us to slip out. Sam went first, taking our bags with him, but I struggled to squeeze my slightly larger form through the window. “Dad!” Sam screeched. And in the reflection of the glass pane, I saw him. Standing behind me. The Seafarer. The door hadn’t opened. I don’t know how he did it. I don’t know how any of it happened. One of his cold hands clamped onto my shoulder, squeezing tightly enough to drain the very life out of my being — his touch filled me with a haunting hollowness that I cannot put into words. An eternal hell that must’ve only lasted a moment in reality. Terrified, I wrenched my body free of the inhuman man’s grasp, and I slithered out of the window after my son. We sprinted to the van and made a hasty getaway, grateful to have chosen the right path this time. Or so we thought. As I drove the way we came, something unexplainable happened. We found ourselves back in Yellow Town. No matter which way we drove, the road always led back to Yellow Town. And that’s when the horrifying gravity of events soon dawned on both of us. We were trapped. We are trapped. Only the book can determine our fate. We’re too frightened to go back to an earlier point in the book and change things, given that we don’t know how this unholy scripture works — all we know is that this isn’t a story. Every consequence is real. Our next choice is as follows: You take the off-road route through the forest. But which road will bring you to the lake in time? Route 15 — Page 152 Route 11 — Page 191 I have no idea which route to take, but I trust Sam’s judgement more than my own. I hope to update all of you soon. If you never see a post from me again, then I guess we’ve chosen the wrong path.

2023.06.10 05:53 Ok-Button6101 mid 30s brother starting the nomad life. What can I get him to prepare him?

He got priced out of his city and decided that, since he works remotely full time, that there's no reason he has to stay in the area. He plans to move to a different state and just stay in an airbnb or some other long term rental that he can find for a few weeks, or up to a month, and then move onto the next city or state.
Most of his stuff is going into storage. He's going to be doing lots of driving, and he's going to be living in temporary living arrangements with a minimal version of all his stuff. What's something I can get him that be useful to him while he's doing this new experience/adventure? My fear is that most physical items will just be something that he'll add to the pile in storage and not see for months. Oh, and I'm getting this for him for his birthday, which is right before his last day at his apartment, in case that makes any difference.
I typically just buy him things for his birthday but this year it doesn't seem appropriate, so I'm looking for pretty much anything that'll benefit him on this adventure. Useful things he can use, or something he can experience (he's traveling up the entire length of the west coast on july 4th weekend, in case that helps with ideas for things to do), or even things that maybe dont cost money? I'm just looking for something that he'll be able to use in some way, and I have never lived like this. I haven't even had a road trip lasting more than 5 hours in the last 15 years. And I'd like to keep it under $100.
Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

2023.06.10 05:42 kashmora Dust of Dreams: general introduction and reminders

Compiled by u/zhilia_mann and extensively revised by u/Loleeeee.

Reminders for Dust of Dreams

Notes on half a book

Dust of Dreams is an odd read. It hasn't seen the reconsideration that Toll the Hounds has; it's ranked ninth in our last reader survey. The Author's Note at the beginning spells out some of the reasons:
Dust of Dreams is the first half of a two-volume novel, to be concluded with The Crippled God. Accordingly, if you’re looking for resolutions to various story-threads, you won’t find them. Also, do note that there is no epilogue and, structurally, Dust of Dreams does not follow the traditional arc for a novel.
He's not kidding. But that's not the whole story.
DoD does have a climax, but it feels more like the mid-book climax that is Y'ghatan in The Bonehunters chapter 7. It's monumental, it changes things, but it doesn't reach out and incorporate disparate storylines or tie together themes. It also arrives incredibly suddenly and catches me off guard even when I know what's coming.
More generally, DoD takes its time. Erikson continues to lean in to the slow character moments that characterize Toll the Hounds, but now does so with the urgency dictated by the imminent conclusion of the series. Theme drives DoD as much as plot -- to the extent that some readers like to claim that basically nothing happens.
There are two specific things to look out for as you read. First, there's a specific plot that seems very odd if you don't catch one hint in the prologue. In order to not give away the game, u/kashmora and I have decided to discuss that plot in more detail under spoiler tags in order to maintain a balance between spoon-feeding the reveal and actually having something to say.
Second, there's a notorious event in chapter 15. It's effectively foreshadowed and won't come as a huge shock, but it's brutal. If any previous sexual violence has bothered you, this is guaranteed to turn your stomach. It's handled respectfully, but it's vile. As the chapter approaches, we will likely give lines and timestamps to stop and then restart reading if you feel you just can't do it.
I genuinely like Dust of Dreams (and, unusually, tend to rate it over The Crippled God). But it's an experience.

Characters

Since Dust of Dreams picks up largely where Reaper's Gale left off, we have a somewhat limited cast of new characters. That said, a) we continue to expand on the Lether continent and b) we're bringing back characters we haven't seen since The Bonehunters.

Gods and Ascendants

Elder

  • Errastas: The Errant, Master of Holds. Likes to "push" and claims that to be his nature.
  • Kilmandaros: Primarily known for pummeling her problems into dust. Mother of Sechul Lath.
  • Sechul Lath: Knuckles, the Lord of Chance and Mischance. He, like his mother, seems to have extra joints and a horizontally hinged sternum.
  • Mael: Bugg, Tehol's one-time man-servant and now Ceda, Chancellor, and Treasurer. Also the god of the sea.
  • Ursto Hoobutt and Pinosel: Ancient gods of beer, wine, and fertility.
  • Olar Ethil: Goddess and Soletaken Eleint Bonecaster of the T'lan Imass.
  • Togg and Fanderay: The Wolves of Winter, gods of war and current occupants of the Beast Throne. Worshiped by the Perish Grey Helms and, before their destruction, the Grey Swords under Toc Anaster.
  • Grizzin Farl: An ancient god, now disappeared.
  • Tiam (or T'iam, or Tiamatha): Goddess of dragons.

New Gods and Ascendants

  • Hood: You remember Hood, right? The Jaghut god of death that just died himself?
  • D'rek: The Worm of Autumn, goddess of decay.
  • Dessembrae: Lord of Tragedy. Divine aspect of Dassem Ultor.
  • Shadowthrone and Cotillion: God of Shadow and the Rope, Patron of Assassins. Schemey plotters.

Letherii

  • Tehol (the Only) is now the King of Lether
  • Janath Anar is his Queen
  • Brys Beddict titled a Prince now, Commander of the Letherii Army
  • Aranict a promising High Mage, Atri-Ceda

The Wanderers

  • Last: An ex-Letherii farmer. Lived with his father after his mother died when he was young. A big but meek fellow.
  • Asane: A meek Letherii woman. Talked down upon by both Nappet & Sheb.
  • Sheb: An ex-convict. Sentenced to what amounts to a death sentence, he survived prison, though was significantly changed for it.
  • Rautos: A man with scant few memories, reminiscings of his wife, and a familiar name.
  • Taxilian: An architect from the city of Taxila, Seven Cities, also with a familiar name.
  • Nappet: Another Letherii ex-convict. He's a bully.
  • Breath: A Letherii witch that's filled with spite & thoughts of drowning.
  • The Ghost: An unnamed character that can move between the Wanderers at will. Has peculiar memories, though is presumably incorporeal.

The Refugium

  • Rud Elalle: Son of Menandore and Udinaas, growing up very fast (think Silverfox).
  • Ulshun Pral: A leader of the Bentract Imass of the Refugium. Son of Onrack T'emlava and Kilava Onas.
    • Seren Pedac: Acquitor and budding mage of Mockra, Trull's widow.
  • Udinaas: Former slave to the Sengar household and former confidant of Rhulad. Dark, cynical, but way too insightful.

The 14th and its Allies

Malazan Leadership

  • Lostara Yil: Former Red Blade, former lover of the Claw Pearl, now Tavore's right hand in T'amber's place. Trained in the Shadowdance.
  • Blistig: Former commander of the Aren Guard, now Fist under Tavore.
  • Kindly and Pores: The notorious captain and his long-suffering lieutenant, and/or Master Sergeant, and/or Quartermaster.

Marines

  • Keneb: Fist who led the defense of Froth Wolf and Silanda in Malaz City. Detached to the Marines.
  • Faradan Sort: Keneb's second in command. May have stood the Stormwall in the past.
  • Bottle, Cuttle, Smiles, Koryk, Tarr, and Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas: Fiddler's squad. Bottle is still a mage who can control animals and Corabb is still Oponn's favorite. 4th squad, 9th company.
  • Gesler, Stormy, Sands, Shortnose, Flashwit, Uru Hela, and Mayfly: Gesler's squad, almost entirely composed of heavies. 5th squad, 9th company.
  • Hellian, Touchy, Brethless, Balgrid, Tavos Pond, Maybe, and Lutes: Hellian's squad. Hellian is a drunk and has arachnophobia. Touchy and Brethless, her two corporals, have served under her since way back in Kartool. 8th squad, 9th company.
  • Thom Tissy, Tulip, Ramp, Jibb, Gullstream, Mudslinger, and Bellig Harn: 12th squad, 9th company under Thom Tissy.
  • Urb, Reem, Bowl, Hanno, Saltlick, and Scant: 13th squad, 9th company. Urb earned his own squad after dragging Hellian out of Y'ghatan, an event she still periodically wants to kill him over.
  • Pravalak Rim, Honey, Strap Mull, Shoaly, Sinter, Kisswhere, and Lookback: 4th squad, 3rd company.
  • Badan Gruk, Ruffle, Skim, Nep Furrow, Reliko, and Vastly Blank: The heavily Dal Honese 5th squad, 3rd company. Nep Furrow is a bush warlock, who talks in an incomprehensible accent.
  • Primly, Hunt, Mulvan Dreader, Neller, Skulldeath, and Drawfirst: 10th squad, 3rd company.

New Bridgeburners

  • Hedge: previously dead, now seemingly alive, Bridgeburner.

Other Soldiers

  • Cord, Shard, Limp, Ebron, Crump, and Sinn: 7th squad, 9th company, largely former Ashok Regiment. Sinn is a traumatized girl and high mage. Crump's actual name is Jamber Bole, High Marshal of the Mott Irregulars.
  • Balm, Deadsmell, Throatslitter, Galt, Lobe, and Widdershins: This humble writer's favorite squad, the 9th, 9th company. Deadsmell is a mage of Hood. Throatslitter's laugh can nearly kill all on its own.
  • Masan Gilani: Dal Honese heavy and excellent rider. She has... other charms. Technically in Urb's squad?

Civilians

  • Banaschar: Former high priest of D'rek, the Worm of Autumn. Stole the entire temple coffers after D'rek killed her followers (except Tayschrenn and Banaschar himself).
  • Withal: "Foreigner" from The Bonehunters and the Meckros blacksmith who made Rhulad's sword for the Crippled God.
  • Sandalath Drukorlat: Tiste Andii wife of Withal. First killed long ago, her soul was released by the Crimson Guards traveling with Seren Pedac in Midnight Tides. She was restored as a companion for Withal and it didn't go well at first. Now they're married, so something worked out?
  • Grub: Keneb's adopted son. Walked the Chain of Dogs. Now the only friend of Sinn. Has a knack for saying prophetic things. Oh, and there's an epigraph in House of Chains (Chapter 19, if you're curious) that identifies him as a future First Sword of the Malazan Empire.

Khundryl Burned Tears

  • Warleader Gall: still headed by him
  • Hanavat: his wife

Perish Grey Helms

  • Mortal Sword Krughava: Fifty-odd years old Mortal Sword of the Wolves of Winter (you may recall that Toc held that title in conjunction with Krughava).
  • Shield Anvil Tanakalian: Shield Anvil of the Grey Helms. Homesick, young, and with some curious ideas about his role.
  • Destriant Run'Thurvian: Destriant of the Grey Helms. Befriended Fist Keneb in the Bonehunters. Doesn't hold Tanakalian in particularly high esteem.

K'Chain Che'Malle and Associates

We meet a surviving nest - Ampelas Rooted - headed by Matron Gunth'an Acyl. She is guarded by J'an Sentinels (Bre'nigan), K'ell Hunters (Sag'Churok, Kor Thuran, Rythok) and Shi'gal Assassins (Gu'Rull). Her One Daughter is called Gunth Mach who was last seen cutting down Redmask at the end of RG, along with Sag'Churok.

The Snake

A group of refugee children on the run from Kolanse, marching through hostile lands and suffering from hunger and thirst. The train is led by the oldest/tallest boy among them, called Rutt. He carries a baby called Held. His second in command is Badalle, who is also our main Snake POV character. Other notable children among them are Saddic who follows Badalle and commits her poems to memory; Brayderal who seems pale inspite of the harsh sun.

The Shake

  • Yedan Derryg: Half-brother to Yan Tovis. Known for a chiseled jaw.
  • Yan Tovis: Preda at Shake Tower, also called Twilight.
  • Pully and Skwish: Ancient Shake witches.

White Face Barghast and Associates

  • Onos Toolan: Warleader of the White Face Barghast. You may note, technically not Barghast.
  • Hetan: His wife. Daughter of the late Humbrall Taur.
  • Cafal: Hetan's brother and Great Warlock of the White Faces.
  • Setoc (of the Wolves): Known as Stayandi. A Letherii child and sole survivor of Redmask's attack in Reaper's Gale. Now a wolf-born child with an innate connection to wolves.
  • Maral Eb:Chief of the Barahn clan of the White Faces
  • Sekara (the Vile): It's in the name, really.

T'lan Imass

  • Nom Kala: Bonecaster of the Brold T'lan Imass.

The Bolkando

  • Chancellor Rava: Chancellor of the Bolkando Kingdom. Is oddly attracted to Felash. Is also in his seventies while Felash is fourteen.
  • Conquestor Avalt: Military commander of the Bolkando Army with the glaring exception of the Evertine Legion. A decent military commander and he looks the part.
  • Queen Abrastal: also called Firehair, commands the Evertine legion, co-ruler of the Bolkando lands
  • Princess Felash: 14th daughter of Queen Abrastal, deemed the cleverest by her mother, 14 years old, away from the kingdom on a diplomatic mission.

Forkrul Assail

There are Pures, Watered and Shriven. The Pures are - as the name suggests - pure-blooded Forkrul Assail. The Watered are hybrids of Forkrul Assail and other races - often humans - while the Shriven refer to any race that doesn't have enough Forkrul blood to be considered Watered. The Shriven are essentially the slave caste of the Forkrul.

Other

  • Icarium: Half-Jaghut son of Gothos. Cursed to forget but immensely powerful.

Wait, what's going on again? What you need to know to start reading.

The Malaz 14th - now Tavore's Bonehunters - invaded the Letherii Empire, ostensibly as a punitive expedition against the Tiste Edur raiding on Imperial lands (namely, Sepik). At the same time, due to machinations by Tehol Beddict, in conjunction with the Malazan invasion, Letherii society was in intense upheaval which ended in a defacto revolution placing Tehol at the head of the Kingdom of Lether.
In a similar timeframe, Icarium Lifestealer activated a strange machine with far-reaching consequences, one of the many among which being levelling an entire city block and killing - among others - Taxilian, Senior Assessor, Taralack Veed, and Rautos Hivanar.
The Errant was bound to Feather Witch through a temple sanctified in his name, and though he eventually won out - drowning Feather Witch in the fetid waters beneath Letheras - he lost his eye. The loss of power stings, and due to a combination of factors, the Errant craves a return to his ancient power. Also, Brys Beddict has returned to the world of the living.
There's a whole lot of skykeeps within the Imperial Warren, as well as a handful of dragons nailed to crosses throughout the books - among them, an "otataral dragon" as witnessed by Pearl & Lostara in House of Chains, and Sorrit, a dragon aspected to Serc, as found by Icarium & Mappo in the Bonehunters.
Redmask failed - and died - in whatever quest the K'Chain Che'Malle set to him, and it seems they're getting desperate.
Silchas Ruin set off to attack Letheras but was beaten back - chiefly by a few well-placed cussers to the face. "Fucking dragon."

Geography

We mostly stay in the continent of Lether but now we also include the Eastern end called Kolanse. Here is a fan made beautifully rendered map of all the places we encounter- done by u/joshuabbutler
Note: Given the extensive Dramatis and the convergence of dozens of threads in this pre-final book, we are stopping the intro here. We plan to update more and expand this further as we keep reading.

2023.06.10 05:39 Sensitive_Target6602 I’m fine, I can go have one drink

For the first time the thought crossed my mind that I can go sneak off and have one drink at my favorite little cafe/bar. I could do it secretly. My boyfriend (my only support system) would never know. I could keep it from him. Who would it hurt? One little whiskey ameretto sour, one little one.
Only it won’t be one. It will be three. It was almost always three there anyway. Any more than three at once would get me some unwanted questions or attention from bartenders or bystanders. So then I’d go home. Drive home when I probably shouldn’t. Maybe stop at the liquor store and pick up a 6 pack of tall boys to finish myself off in the tub while I cry about my problems and then drag my drunk self into bed hoping not to puke anywhere or at anytime.
Water? Wouldn’t touch her. I’d order her and forget her. Dinner? Wouldn’t need it. Full on booze already. Stopping? Wouldn’t hear of it. Wouldn’t know it.
Then, in my blackout state I’d probably do something real fun. Like reach out to an ex or fight with my boyfriend about something. Or go walk around my house and pick up my cats (putting them in harms way). Or maybe I’d do something worse. No, definitely something worse. It’s always worse. Drunk me wants drama and problems and chaos.
On the other hand maybe it would be just one drink today. One little drink that I would hide away. One little drink to convince myself I’m fine and can have one drink occasionally. Oh the trouble that will come from a thought like that.
I’ve made my bed. I’ve fucked up enough. I’ve hurt loved ones enough. I’ve partied enough. I’ve chipped my teeth enough. I’ve broken bones enough. I’ve had one drink enough.
I am a non drinker. I will not and cannot have one drink.

2023.06.10 05:38 Happiness-College The Young Man's Guide To Happiness, Part 1.

The purpose of this post is to help other young men struggling with the big question: How do I stop being depressed, and start building a life I can look forward to. Before I learned what I'm going to share with you, I was passively suicidal, meaning I didn't want to live but I was too much of a pussy to kill myself. Today I wake up at ~6AM each morning with a smile on my face excited to do purposeful work... Oh I should add, I'm on ZERO medications. So I did this all though modifications in my personal choices. In a nutshell: Depression is the result of consistently performing actions that trade your future away for short term pleasure today. The solution, gradually start tapering down activities destroying your life, and increasing activities that improve your life. "Yeah but how am I supposed to do that if I have zero motivation, I'm depressed." Excellent question. #1 Find a good reason why: I'd recommend picking both a selfish reason, & a noble reason. To identify your selfish reason: look at what you crave or envy in others. If you still watch porn, let your drive to self improve be to be able to ACTUALLY date the beautiful women you jerk off to. Maybe it's to show people they were wrong for doubting you. Maybe it's to get a lot of money and live the rest of your life by the beach in Fiji. To identify a noble reason: identify the pains you have and think about how good it would feel to help others get rid of that pain. For me the biggest pains I've had were learning how to date growing up without a father. Constantly wanting to die due to having an aimless existence. Not knowing what or how to socialize. STOP HERE. DO THIS NOW: Get your phone, create a note stating: "The reason we're going to improve our life is because of A. insert selfish reason & B insert noble reason. " Screenshot the note and make it your background. 2. After you identify your reason why, it's time to get to work. In order to achieve your goals you need self control. There's two STUNNING ways to get self control and I recommend practicing both for MINIMUM 30 days. Meditation for 10 minutes. Working out 3-4x per week. Here's how to get started. For meditation look up on youtube: Hamza Meditation Guide. Essentially it's this, every morning allocate 5 minutes to focus on your breath. When your thoughts trail off, gently come back to your breath. This teaches your brain how to stop following impulses, allowing you to start sticking to goals. This will also build your sense of calm and confidence. Next THE GYM HABIT. When you start respecting your body and investing in it, you naturally start to feel a sense of pride, this will raise both your happiness & your discipline. How to start at the gym. Personally I started with Hamza complete aesthetic body guide + Jessy Nippard technical videos. To start at the gym, just focus on building the habit of going for the first 45 days doing EXTREMELY easy exercises. Once you have the habit you can start increasing the intensity and actually building muscles. It took me 3 months to integrate the habit of going every other day. Then at 6 months I would go Arm day, Leg day, rest day. It's been 2 years now and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. STOP NOW DO THIS: Update your phone note to say: "You have only two goals to focus on for the next 90 days. Meditation and going to the gym every other day for 1hr. " Focus on this for 90 days and you'll have a basis for discipline, and personal pride. I'll drop part 2 later, it's getting too much to write but start here boys.

2023.06.10 05:09 PanchoBaker Someone got some esplainin for me on Jaay Brooks & Done

TLDR: Why would Jay be willing to take such a hit to his "legacy"? what unknown unknown is he and his slime balls keeping from us? WCC
Long time listener first time caller here. With so many great things and story lines happening in the game of golf over the past two and half three years it's a shame Jay had to clousterfuuken it all up. He and he alone allowed for this all to happen and to get to the point it's gotten to. He such a narcissistic sociopath that it's hard not to think that he thinks he's crushing it like 400y drives! I mean Rory said in his presser that Jay now runs golf... WTF How can he be the cause and the solution?? His admission of hypocrisy and Webster like display of such leads me to wonder why would he be willing to castrate himself like that? CEO of world golf could be one, money/power. I've heard convenient truth thrown around and wasn't it convenient for a Tuesday 10 am in Canada with a memo containing a monster 'red herring' in the way of the tax exempt status in the first paragraph?!?! Congress is actively talking about this and I can't help but think that plays perfectly into what/why/where/when and most importantly how this was announced??? I mean [Claude Harmon III calling it all the Truman Show ] https://golfweek.usatoday.com/lists/liv-golf-brooks-koepka-coach-blasts-media/ was a lights on moment for me and the timing of this seems to perpetuate that thought. Jay and his quack out friend with whom should also be dunne must be singing Dixie right now with the pied pippers flute. I mean come on how dumb do you think we as fans of golf are? If nothing more I hope this post opens up some eyes to the truth. As to the PGeeJay Tour's (that's my vote for the new name) force feeding me the value of "legacy" is yet another wonderful example of hypocrisy and I think ultimately will be Jaay's legacy to the game. To me legacy is built on tradition (see ANGC ask for Jim) where you look back fondly with admiration on the hard work put in by those who came before you. Not always but generally through hard work or some form of merit, one might get to join that tradition and still then a "legacy" is not guaranteed. Realizing no one person or thing is bigger than the foundation that was laid before you invokes a sense of integrity and accountability in that in order to not only maintain the tradition but to leave it better than you found it. That is legacy. It's actions steming from a place of good with good purpose and well intent. So for Jay to say and continue to talk about the tradition is the vomit leaving his soul
Oh wait there's more since I'm here and will probably never post again I would like publicly shame Jay for what he allowed to happen under his "watch" and the most egregious of which is what he did to our favorite uncle Phil. Here a question for you "Who is the oldest major winner and when/where how old?" You mean to tell me It's not Jack at Augusta in '86 at a spry 46? What do you mean?? Phil didn't even get to defend his title and with Jay's hard on for legacy you'd think what Phil did was incredible like awe inspiring especially now that brooks has 5 and likely 2 more coming this year (every now and again I get a whiff of a Brooks slam). It's Phil!! why am I suppose to hate him again Jay? I keep forgetting?? Every year the open loves to remind us of Turnberry and Watson's eluding Father time yet Phil actually does it and instead of giving him (what we can now only speculate what would have been) the sweetest victory lap of all time we get crickets not to mention he doesn't even get the chance to defend. Horrible... The world however is horrible see "Brandon in Shambles" he'll fill you in on why you should care. I guess I don't because I just want to watch golf and cheer for people I like. Ok which brings me to my question and that is with the DOJ investigation and senator talking about 501(c) tax exempt status and how Norman is now apparently "getting what he deserves bc he's a dick and blah blah blah" how is everyone ok with this decently tacky smokescreen? For real how? And why is he willing to take this on the chin? And why now after all the lies and forced narrative? As rumsfeld said what unknown unknown's does Jay possess? Is it having all that power? Could it be just to screw over Norman and 54 golf(LIV)?? Because Jay's "legacy" is in one of those port-o-potties after a hard rain at a hot and humid US Open, you know the one I'm taking about. The mini city right by the main entrance conveniently placed in high traffic area, a merch tent with in view. Where you open the door and you see sheet everywhere and the smell hits you like when you found out about this merger just stuns you, go ahead close your eyes and take a deep breath... That's who's running the show?!
I personally want nothing to do with his new tour so long as he has any part in it... bc Phil was right and long before I realized Phil (at that time I was still believing the Jay invoked PGA Tour narrative that Phil was evil now how associating with him was reputation suicide) was right I always kept coming back to why in the world would Phil of all people be doing this?? I'll never forgive Jay for making me feel that way and that's why he needs to hit the dusty trail and head off into the sunset never to be seen or heard from again.
and I just needed somewhere to get all of this out and whew deep breath I feel better... Thanks Redditeers
I'll take my answer off air as the theme song to [CHiPs] https://youtu.be/GdyAFItCp9o plays me out

2023.06.10 05:04 The_Alloquist [A Lord of Death] - Chapter 65 (Efrain)

[←Chapter 64] [Cover Art] [My Links] [Index] [Discord] [Subreddit] [Chapter 65→]
The sensation of dreaming was still somewhat foreign to Efrain. Part of him was fully integrated into the dream, believing whatever strange logic that was thrust upon him. The other part was an independent observer, watching as its counterpart was tugged about on the tides of absurdity. Most of it was inky and jumbled recollections of the past few days, monsters and pages scrawled with ink and sharp steel.
Then it very much wasn’t.
He was in a contorted, expanded reminiscence of the office in Karkos. Wood panelling stretching into misty heights, lined with the relatively unadorned bridges and walkways of the Kakros canals. Bookshelves upon bookshelves were laid into the walls of this now titanic space.
The first sensation that came to Efrain was the ache of vanish eyes at the sheer expanse of the library. Even the cathedrals and halls of Angorrah paled in comparison to the immensity of the endless bookshelves. The second sensation was marvelling at how he was aware of any of this at all.
Tentatively, he picked a book from one of the many shelves, its red cover bearing no inscription. As he opened the pages, they flickered and tessellated out, until his whole world was the text and paper. And slowly, words began to resolve into their real, physical components.
‘Water’ became a sparkling sea, ‘orange’ became a expanse of bloody sky, ‘friends’ stretched and warped into the shape of two men, sitting on the steps of a stone pyramid. The city around them was far smaller, without most of the wooden constructions and walkways that now dominated it. There was a clear line to the sea, and Efrain was sitting under the shade of a parasol, dressed in purple robes.
“Well, that about settles it,” said Nicolo, his dark beard just beginning to take on the fullness that would remain throughout his life.
“No it does not,” Armsted responded, “I’m already on the ropes with my family for how many women I allow you to visit here. I do not consent, I don’t even have the authority to consent to this.”
“Oh you’ll figure it out,” Nicolo said, shoving his friend, in a move that might’ve been dangerous for anyone less heavily built than Armsted, “everyone knows you’re the real heir anyways, not that pig that buries his heads between every set of thighs he comes across.”
“Rock, meet glass house,” said Armsted, shoving back.
“Oh please, I’ve reformed,” Nicolo said, pressing his hand to his chest, “I’ve seen the errors of my ways - there’s only one woman for me now.”
He turned around to look at Efrain under his parasol, his expression shining bright through the veil Efrain was wearing.
“Attest for me, friend,” he said, plantiff.
“Reformed?” Efrain mused, “Well, if you mean in the same sense as Angorrah - costing far too many innocent lives in the process, to dubious ends, then I’d be inclined to agree.”
Armsted laughed, and the two young men began to playfully wrestle in the roof top pool, surrounded by modified lunar lilies. He sighed and shut the book on the various sun dances he’d been reading, hoping that their splashing didn’t get too much water in the planters. The poor plants were so sensitive after all, too much water and they’d rot from the stem up.
“You know-” Efrain said, “some might say you-”
Bam. Like a book being shut hurriedly, Efrain was back in the impossibly huge library, the book closed in his hands. Efrain looked down at the cover, only to find that it was now gone, lost somewhere on the infinite shelves.
“What?” he said, “No, no, hold on, give it back.”
He tried to parse the various volumes, and couldn’t find a single one of the deep blood red that the volume had been. Still, there were plenty more, so he picked one at random. It was an older text, with yellowed pages, and worn leather coverings.
Once more the text on the page expanded and morphed into the real world.
He was in another office, larger than the one in Karkos, the wood panelling in this one darker, the bookshelves larger. Red curtains were drawn back from a whole wall of windows, overlooking a city of considerable size. Efrain recognized it from his earliest memories.
He was in Angorrah. But where? When? Just after he’d completed his transformation.
His question was answered and saw the dark coloured hands that rested on his massive, and cluttered desk. He wanted to reach up to his face, to feel if there was still meat on his cheeks, eyes still in their sockets. But alas, this was just a memory and he only could watch it play out before him.
There was note on his desk, stained with what looked like tears. Were they his? What was the note saying? He couldn’t quite notice, given that his gaze was locked on the city. The note remained stolidly at the edges of his vision, despite how he might will his eyes to move.
He came up towards the glass, laying a hand on it, feeling and marveling at the cold against his now living flesh.
There was a knock at the door, a student perhaps. Efrain wiped his eyes, and hastily composed himself for the visitor. Without so much as looking, he walked over to the desk and seized the note, crumpling it violently and thrusting it into a pocket.
“Yes, ahem, yes! Come in, please,” he said.
The door creaked open and in walked-
Bam. He was out, back in the library. The book was gone, lost once more on the shelves.
“No!” he cried, “That was- that was-”
“You don’t belong here,” came a voice.
He turned, finding a suspended platform, littered with desks, and what looked like an immense pile of written on pages. As he watched, it rose, swirling as one enormous mass. There was something familiar about it, just at the edges of his consciousness.
“I am familiar, because you have seen me before,” came the voice, “but you should not have come. This place is not for you.”
“The books in this place, are they all memories? Even the ones that happened before I-”
“Not memories. You’ve said - memories are knowledge. Knowledge can lie. They are truth. Not in the absolute, but the truth of what happened in time.”
“Well,” Efrain said, “I want to know more.”
“No,” said the crawling lines of text, constantly forming and reforming, “twice you have been pulled back from this place. First by the-”
The voice made a sequence of sounds that Efrain couldn’t parse. The whole scene seemed to shudder at what must have been language.
“She knocked you loose, hence you can float free. I doubt it was intended. Now I must deal with the consequences.”
“Here,” he said, “where is here? What are you?”
“No one,” said the thing standing tall as the space blurred and contorted around her, “My name is gone. By function, I remember when all forget. Here is here. My garden, my library, my vault. You have been brought here by mere chance, now GO.”
With that final word, Efrain was sent careening forwards as the entire scene shifted sideways. Falling with the contents of the entire library, soon the pages became his entire vision.
Then he was back in the office of Karkos, the mentor craning over him, clearly concerned by his lack of movement.
“Master Efrain?” he said, holding a tray with a pot and cups, “I had fetched the tea like you asked, but you weren’t responding.
Efrain flexed his fingers, touching his mask, and found nothing but cold bone and stone, respectfully.
“Yes, well,” Efrain said, “I must’ve fallen asleep. Odd, I rarely need it. Oh, and you brought the tea, how thoughtful.”
“Yes. I have it on the recommendation of the professor you sat in on that the persimmon blend is particularly fragrant. ‘Warms the soul’ he said.”
“Let’s hope he doesn’t bare a grudge,” Efrain said as the tray was set before him.
“If you were anyone else, he might’ve,” laughed the mentor, “but seeing a historical figure, one of the founders of the academy no less, come to refute his own work? It doesn’t get much better for a scholar of history.”
Efrain chuckled as the tea was poured, filling the room with a scent that indeed warmed the soul.
“To tell you the truth, I thought that I’d forgotten how to teach,” Efrain said, taking the cup and inhaling deeply, “I’ve spent so many years on my own, lost in my books in distant locales. I haven’t had true students in decades. Well, except…”
The mentor sat forward, clearly curious at what kind of person Efrain might’ve taken on as a student.
“I met a girl, young girl, in a mountain village,” he said, smoothing over the church, “well, quite a few things happened. It all got a bit messy - overlapping parties with overlapping interests, and all that. She ultimately fell under my wing. Curious girl. Actually, her mother was from the city.”
The man nodded vigorously, encouraging him to continue as he sipped from one of the cups.
“Now that I recall, her mother was…” Efrain snapped his fingers, “now what was her name? Well, it doesn’t matter. I’ll think of it later. In any case, she was bizarre. Has a magical affliction.”
“A magical affliction? Do you mean a curse?”
“Well, perhaps,” Efrain said, tapping his temple, “curses on objects are hard enough, especially if you want them to endure. Putting on living creatures is notoriously difficult. In fact, did you know there’s some old accounts of the sorcerers living on the steppes north of Angorrah. They came in conflict with the church, and they would send in goats to the city with bezoars loaded to the brim with magic. The poor animals would then explode.”
The scholar could not possibly be more interested than anything else. Efrain was unsure if this was merely perfected flattery, or genuine fascination on the man’s part. Either way, it elevated his opinion - if flattery, this level was an art in itself.
“Unfortunately, it didn’t do them a whole lot of good in the end,” Efrain sighed, staring out the windows, “none of those that resisted the Helgacite expansion did well. Angorrah was too well organised to leave stragglers.”
“Except the northern mountain kingdoms,” said the mentor.
“Well, that’s true,” conceded Efrain, “only because Angorrah had conquered half a dozen other countries by then and didn’t want to spread their forces further. The mountain men were shrewd - locking them into a contract like that.”
Efrain thought about the forested regions of Inalthia, where the borders of Angorrah ran up against its northern mountains. It’d been nothing when he’d passed through, almost three hundred years prior. He wondered if it had also expanded into sprawling townships, like Karkos had in his absence. Of course, they had the notable advantage of being basecamp for any and all mining operations in the region, and the reception point of the mountain men’s tithes to boot.
“But, back to the girl I spoke of. Odd creature. Bright. Part of a set, actually,” Efrain said, putting down the teacup.
“Oh?”
“Yes, of three. The other two are twins. Completely unrelated to her, from Erratz actually.”
“How curious!” said the mentor, nodding to indicate he knew the city.
“Yet all sharing the same affliction. They have these… scars. They wrap around their arms and hands. No pattern that I could see. And when they use magic, they glow from within.”
The mentor had put down his cup, and was leaning into Efrain now, hardly daring to breath.
“It’s fascinating, really,” Efrain said, “and they have these memories. Not their own. Supposedly they’re of the founding gods of the church.”
“Bizzare!” said the man.
“Oh yes, quite,” Efrain said, enjoying the exaggerated reactions of his converser, “and they have the most striking capacity for magic I’ve ever seen. They pick up things in a handful of tries that might take others hours to do. Not to mention just how deep their wells run.”
“And they all share this same trait?” said the man, fiddling with his spectacles.
“Oh yes,” Efrain said, “different children, obviously, with their own individual identities and personalities, but all with the same affliction. Fascinating isn’t it? So, through some twists and turns, one of the ultimately came to me for guidance. I should go check up on her, to see if she’s alright.”
“If you know which families they’re staying at, I could bring you to them,” said the mentor, “but you’ll be seeing them at the Festival tomorrow, or so it is said.”
“I see, well, there’s no rush, at least for now,” Efrain said, reclining in the chair.
“By the way, I can’t help but notice you’ve not sipped your tea. Is there something wrong? More honey?”
“Err…” Efrain said, thinking fast, “of course. Speaking of cursed items! This mask. Fused to my face. Quite unremovable, I think. Can’t eat or drink anything.”
“That’s horrible!” said the Mentor, standing up, “we must remove it at once! You’ll starve.”
“No, no, my good man, though I appreciate the thought,” Efrain said, “it’s been stuck to me for some time, you see. Quite useful in a way, it would seem it’s curse also spares the wielder from starvation and thirst, also sleep, for the most part.”
“Oh,” he said, “well how did you come by such a device?”
“It was a curiosity, one that I didn’t take care when handling,” Efrain said, wagging his finger, “a good lesson for you. Even the wisest can be unfathomably careless. I might miss the comforts of food and drink, but I’ve found other ways to amuse myself. My nose has gotten quite sharp. The professor was right, the blend warms the soul.”
That seemed to placate the mentor, who resumed sipping on his blend, though not without occasional guilty looks at Efrain’s full cup. Before they could resume the conversation, there was a knock at the door to the study.
“That’d be some of the students,” said the mentor, getting up to let them in, “they went to the library to get the texts you requested.”
Several young men and women filed in, arms filled with bound volumes, as well as brushes and inkpots. The mentor was quick to dismiss them as he began to reorganize the journals in order of instruction. Efrain was happy to sit and scent the tea as he did so.
“Well, there’s that,” the mentor said, slightly sweaty after moving so many volumes around, “Twelve in total, representing most of your attributed work. There are other books that reference yours. Oh dear, I’ll suppose those will have to be changed as well.”
“That’s was second editions are for,” Efrain said as he flicked open the cover of the first book, reading the brief foreword, “I assume you have a press in the city.”
“Several,” said the mentor, “we took the designs from Angorrah, and improved upon it. The artisans called it “woefully inefficient” when they first started building them. Also “tacky”.”
Efrain laughed as he finished the prelude, more self-aggrandizing nonsense from Nicolo, though not as audacious as some of the lies he’d put together in his youth. Seems like age had tempered that particular tendency.
“They would,” Efrain said, “I assume you just lease copies to them?”
“Oh yes. The previous mentor tried to sell the entire manuscripts to them!” he huffed, “selling off our academies heritage for profit, I say.”
“Can’t imagine too many were happy about that. I can see why you were selected as his successor.”
“You flatter me, master Efrain,” he said, bowing his head low with a smile of appreciation.
Within the first few pages, Efrain already knew exactly where the bulk of this book had come from. He also knew that it would have to be entirely rewritten for accuracy's sake. He’d already committed, however, there was no backing out of this one. To his surprise, however, the historical footnotes were both well sourced and actually quite informative.
Always more interested in history, Efrain thought, shaking his head and smiling in his mind.
“Well, is there anything else you’d like to discuss master?” he said, “or should I leave you to it?”
“I think we’re done for the time being, my friend,” Efrain said, gesturing to the piles of papers, “I have my work cut out for me, it would seem.”
“I can send up a senior student to serve as a scribe if you should wish,” he said, getting up and retrieving the tea set.
“Not as a scribe - I prefer to write my own notes,” Efrain said to a nod of appreciation, “but send one up all the same, so I can fetch more paper and ink should need demand. Preferably a quiet one if possible.”
“Absolutely,” said the mentor, “I can’t tell you how excited we all are to have you! And for you to grace us with your knowledge - ah, golden opportunities abound!”
“Yes, yes,” Efrain said, before snapping his fingers, “ah yes! I figured it out.”
“What would that be?”
“The name of the girl’s mother. My student from the northern village.”
“Ah, I see. What is it?”
“Assyeria, that’s what it was,” Efrain said, wondering how he would have forgotten something so simple.
The mentor, on the other hand, turned white then red, and had to scramble to catch the tray he dropped.

2023.06.10 05:01 The_Alloquist [A Lord of Death] - Chapter 64 (Sorore)

[←Chapter 63] [Cover Art] [My Links] [Index] [Discord] [Subreddit] [Chapter 65→]
In a rare moment, Sorore was actually having a nice dream, a normal one, one could even say. She was back home, in that moderately seized house in Erratz, laying on her mother’s lap. She could even hear the gentle sound that the needle made as it went in and out of the cloth. It was peaceful, pleasant, surrounded by familiar sound and smells, though her sight was blurry and confused.
It was not to last, as the sound of rushing water overtook all else, until she was forced awake by its unrelenting pace. When she sat up, rubbing her eyes in the broad bed, she released that it wasn’t the sound of water, nor was it relegated to her dreams. There was a commotion outside people talking in hushed but harsh tones.
Neither Lillian, nor Aya were within the room, and she wondered if they were having an argument. That wouldn’t be good - she’d watched them have the spat earlier, and that dispute didn’t need much worsening. Sorore crept to the door to the outer hallway - she loved how they slid to create whole new rooms. It was something she’d have to think about more she decided as she pulled it open and realised several things at once.
One, there were a whole lot of armoured figures in the hallway, at least four, maybe half a dozen. Two, the balcony door was open, and Lillian was currently arguing with one of them, Aya standing by looking like a mining explosive had gone off right next to her. Three, her brother and Niche had just emerged out of the room beside, and Niche was about to draw his sword at the sudden intrusion.
For a moment, she panicked, her mind going completely blank. Her mind raced with visions of bloody aftermath, and a chase through the city, back to the dinner she’d had with all those nice people.
“Oh, hello!” she blurted, drawing the surprised stares of several of the men, “who might you be?”
There was an instant of shocked silence between all parties.
“Nobody do anything!” called the man who was out on the porch, “We are representatives of the sand-shell legion, on behalf of the matriarch of the Eisen. We have come to retrieve her granddaughter.”
Niche lowered his hand from his sword belt, but Sorore could tell that he was ready to fight on a moment’s provocation. She also noticed that Kieren, in the same gown she’d worn to the square was standing in the stairwell. The woman looked so nervous Sorore thought she might fall over and down the stairs.
“Let’s move to a less cramped area,” said the captain, in a tone that brook no argument.
Eventually, it was sussed out, though not without considerable resistance on part of the paladins, that they were to meet in the great hall. As they sat, they were brought simple drinks of milk and honey, flavoured with something else that Sorore could not quite place. The two paladins looked like pacing cats, constrained on their chairs, arms crossed and eyes hard.
“Under no circumstances can we give one of ours into you custody,” said Lillian, locked in a match with the captain.
“Within the city, you are under the authority of the guard, no matter who you are. If the matriach has sent for this girl, then we have our orders.”
“As do we, captain,” said Niche, “to protect and guide each of these young women and… man, unto the holy lands of Angorrah.”
One of the guards flanking the captain whispered something in his ear.
“She’s not going to like it,” the captain said, then heard something else.
“Very well. Bloodshed before the Festival would be unwise. We have enough of that already. Right then, one of you paladins, assuming you are who you say you are, shall come with us and the lady to be received by the Eisen. I cannot say it’s likely you will have a happy reception. They will expect you to come unarmed.”
The paladins were bristling at the implied threat, and several hands were already dangerously close to their sword belts. Sorore gripped the mug that she was being offered, before Aya sat up and proclaimed to the group.
“Leave two of your men with us, then,” she said.
The captain’s eyes furrowed.
“I don’t wish to second guess you, my lady,” he said, “but why would I do that?”
“Trust,” Aya said, with a side long look at Lillian, “simple. If you leave your men with us, you can’t simply waltz off with me and my friend. Plus, it gives us men who know, and can quickly get around the city, so they can find you whenever they need to.”
The captain considered, and nodded.
“Very well my lady. Two men will be left for the disposal of your party members. But you shall have to come with us, immediately.”
“Me as well,” said Lillian.
“As you wish,” he said, “but you must disarm yourself. That is non-negotiable.”
Lillian was fuming, but unbuckled her belt and handed her armaments to Niche. The legionaries surrounded them, and departed with them out the front of the pyramid. They were left in front of the roaring fire, Kieren sitting beside them holding a considerably more full glass of the amber coloured alcohol.
“You said that this-” Niche began, his face reddened, “you sold us out!”
“Sold you out?” said Kieren incuriously as she swirled the glass around, “sold you out?”
The woman slammed down the glass on one of the nearby table, somehow not breaking it in the process.
“Maybe, you should of told us that you had the granddaughter of Aystara godsdamned Eisen in your retinue? No, forgot that little detail?”
“Okay, can we get this over with?” said Frare, picking at his nails.
“What?” said both the paladin and the trader, staring at the temerity of the youth.
“Blah, blah, we’ve all kept things from eachother,” he said, “so let’s all move on. Who is this ‘Aystara’? Why is she important?”
While Niche gaped at the casual ease from which Frare dismissed the turbulence, the trader seemed to settle.
“Only one of the two most powerful people in the city, young man,” she said, downing a shot from the glass, “between her and Edmund Poutash, it’d be easier to list what they don’t own. The docks, the schools, the farms… if you want an import or export licence? You go through her. You want to own a ship bigger than a rinky-dink fishing boat? You go through her or Potash.”
She finished the glass, and reached for the decanter, and stopped herself.
“And you waltz into the city, and conveniently forget to mention that you have her granddaughter, who hasn’t been in the city ever, if I remember correctly. To say she’d be furious that you didn’t bring the young lady before her immediately would be an understatement. And worse, you dragged us into it.”
“She must be awfully mean - you had nothing to do with us. You just hosted it.”
The woman blinked at the boldfaced remark, and Sorore delivered a good kick to his shins to drive the point home.
“No, no,” she ultimately said, “no I don’t think she’ll do anything to our family, if she believes us. She’s not unreasonable. At least, so I’ve heard. I’ve only met her once, and that was for a brief time. As for what she’ll do to you...”
She gave a pointed look at Niche.
“You tried to hid her granddaughter from her, maybe unintentionally, maybe not. If I were a betting woman, which I’m not, I would say that means trouble. If you want my advice-”
“I don’t,” said Niche, crinkling his noise.
“Don’t be stupid,” said Frare, before he howled at another kick.
Sorore’s face was burning with indignation and embarrassment. This was all too much.
“If you want my advice,” Kieren pressed on, “you’d go find and talk to your commander immediately. I could fetch for him if you wish - I know where Amicio’s home is.”
Niche, through narrowed eyes and clenched teeth, acquiesced.
“Good, now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some letters to send,” she said, “of course, though this has earned you no small amount of displeasure from certain peoples, we’ve been instructed to provide you with house and board for as long as it takes to sort this out. You are still welcome guests and you will be treated as such.”
The tepid truce struck, the children were sent back up to their rooms. Sorore tried to sleep, and managed no more than half an hour before she was woken by her brother.
“The commander’s here,” he said, “he wants to talk to us.”
The commander, looking very tired, but light of step than Sorore had ever seen him, waited by the fire. He was talking with Kieren and the two remaining legionarries in the fast-paced trading tongue of the city, but stopped when he saw the girl come downstairs.
“My lady,” he said, “it seems there’s been a huge misunderstanding.”
She realized that it was his manner of dress which was throwing her off. Instead of his usual worn and thoroughly practical travelling clothes, he wore the long flowing silks of orange and cream. It suited him, matching his calm personality.
“What misunderstanding?” she said.
“Well, we had no idea that our own Aya was the granddaughter of Aystara Eisen herself. I was surprised as anyone. Of course, I knew she was an Eisen, from her mother.”
He looked at Kieren, who looked like she was about to fall asleep.
“But I never imagined that she was a direct descendent of the main house. I thought she was part of the branch, not necessary to cause any fuss, especially during the preparation of the festival. Ah!”
He slapped his head to indicate his shock at the realisation.
“What a terrible mistake I’ve made,” he said, patting the woman’s arm, “this is all on my horrendous lack of judgement. Here’s what’s going to happen, one of these gentlemen and trader Amicio will be vouching for me at the gate. I’m going to the Eisen estate and having a friendly chat with the matriarch, to clear up this misunderstanding.”
Sorore felt at last some suggestion that someone around the city knew what was happening and what they were going to do.
“Here’s what I need you and your brother to do,” Naia said, “I want you to wait and enjoy the hospitality of the madame of the house.”
The term seemed to flatter Kieren, who flushed at the complement. Or that might’ve been the drink, Sorore wasn’t entirely sure.
“Niche, you take care of them. I expect that I might be at the estate for the rest of the night, and possibly onto next afternoon. Things are always so chaotic around the Festival. There’s no reason for you not to attend the festival opening tomorrow, if you can.”
“You want us to attend a festival?” said Niche in disbelief, “right now?”
“Well, not right now, it hasn’t started yet,” said the commander, “but, if Kieren would graciouslly agree to take you as guest of honour, you’d have excellent seats. If that’s not too much to ask, especially after our little debacle.”
Kieren nodded, and affirmed that she wouldn’t mind at all, if the matter was going to be soon cleared up. Sorore was now certain that it wasn’t just alcohol.
“Great. You’re all taken care of, now I’d better explain myself. If you wouldn’t mind,” he said, pointing to the quarter full glass, which Kieren handed to him. The commander downed it all in one, rolled his shoulders, and smiled.
“Don’t worry. It’ll all work out in the end,” he said, “in fact, I would say to enjoy yourselves, as much as you can. And best go back to bed, unless you want to be sleeping during the festival, which, I assure you from experience, you do not.”
Before they could say anything, the commander had swept by them, vanishing out of the front of the pyramid.
“You should heed him,” said Kieren, picking up the decanter and the glass and moving towards the kitchens, “if you’re stuck here for the time being, you might as well enjoy it And that starts with getting good sleep.”
“Last time you said that, we woke up to armed guards,” Niche said flatly.
“Well, I assure you, I’m not boring enough to do that a second time. It would be assassin’s from across the streets, who approach over the rooftops.”
“Do they actually exist?” asked Frare, suddenly excited.
“Oh, I’m sure,” said Kieren as she stowed away her drinking equipment, “but not tonight. Go get some sleep sir paladin, and you two young ones as well. You’ll need it.”
Sorore was cajoled up the steps, Frare coming up after her. Niche seemed placated enough for the time being, though he was clearly unhappy with the outcome. The pleasant dreams neglected to revisit for a second time, but at least the sleep was uninterrupted. When Soroe next awoke, it was a young handmadein, pulling open the screen doors.
“Good morning, my lady,” she said, “how did you sleep?”
“I- well enough, I suppose,” she said, stretching and yawning, before quickly covering her mouth.
The maid had the presence of mind not to notice as she revealed the bright sunlight streaming through the open balcony.
“It must almost be midday!” Sorore exclaimed, leaping out of the bed as she tried to straighten herself.
The maid chuckled as she finished opening up the room.
“Not to fear, my lady,” she said, “it’s customary to sleep into the early afternoon. The Festival does not start until just before sunset, afterall. In fact, you might be earlier than many of the household.”
“Oh,” Soroe said, feeling rather foolish, “Um. Well, I guess I’ll get dressed.”
“Of course. I’ve left out some clothes for you. Madame Kieren suggested that you try clothes from our city. I hope you’ll love them. Do you bathe?”
Sorore wrinkled her nose at the prospect. What kind of question was that?
“Of course I do,” she said.
“Well, there’s a place to bath at the bottom of the pyramid. If you wish to bath alone, you should go now - I’ll bring you clothes for you to change at the waterfront.”
“You bathe together here?” Sorore said
“In the mornings and evenings,” she said, “we do not bring water up into the house if we cannot avoid it. To the stone goes the sea, and to the home goes the sky.”
She looked around, then leaned in with a smile.
“Also, water is very troublesome to carry up all those flights.”
“So just come down to the waterfront?” she said, gathering up what spare things she needed.
“Just follow me, my lady,” said the handmaiden, picking up a pile of clothes and leading her down the stairs.
They emerged onto an inset pool carved into the pyramid interior. A smooth stone deck, with benches and chairs and stacks of towels, as well as several large paper screens, presumably for changing. Sorore was glad to see they were alone, at least for the time being.
At the handmaid, Kiroe’s, direction, she stripped down naked and plunged into the pool. The water was a perfect temperature - cold enough to dispel the last of the grogginess, warm enough to be pleasant to float in. She swam around for a bit, constrained by the relatively small volume, while Kiroe prepared her outfit on the deck.
“Do you mind if I join you?” came a voice from the other end.
Kieren slipped out of a thin morning dress and stepped into the water. Sorore swam over and came to stand beside her.
“Is there any news? About Aya and the commander?” she said, a little too quickly.
Kieren, who’d been sinking into the water with a sigh of contentment, opened one eye.
“Straight to business? Perhaps you are better suited to the city than I thought.”
Sorore tried to smile, but her concern was betrayed, judging by the woman’s softening of expression.
“My knowledge is limited. My uncle is serving as our representative for now. Sounds like your commander was at least allowed to make his case to the Eisen. He made note of one other companion of yours.”
“Oh? Who?” she said, pushing out into the pool, feeling the water surge over her shoulders.
“A man in black clothes,” she said, “who hides his face behind a mask. He was there for the meeting.”
“The mage?” said Sorore, before considering that she maybe shouldn’t have mentioned it.
“A mage?” said Kieren, before submerging herself in the water.
She tossed her hair back as she came back up, spraying water in a neat arc.
“Well, that explains his odd demeanour,” she said, “now, regrettably, that’s all the time I have today for bathing. I will see you at the festival.”
“Hello cousin! May I join- oh,” came a voice from the steps leading out.
It was Ivers, dressed in nothing but a loose robe, which was already half-way off his body, sculpted with muscle from hauling rope and tackle. Sorore stifled a gasp and turned away, trying not to redden.
“I can come back later,” he offered.
“Do you mind?” Kieren said to Sorore, “if you do, it’d be best to finish soon and let others bathe.”
“No, no,” she said, waving her host away.
Kiero had warned her, after all. It would be best to become accustomed to the strange ways of this beautiful city. Besides, it’s not like she hadn’t bathed before in the company of men her age back home. She cursed herself for being so self-conscious, and forced herself to turn around.
“Are you sure? I can leave if you want, it’s not-” Ivers began.
“No, it’s fine. It’s fine,” Sorore said, smiling at him, “it’d be good to have companionship.”
“Well, then, Ivers, I trust you’ll behave yourself,” said Kieren rising from the water.
“Of course, cousin,” Ivers said, casting his eyes to the floor.
Sorore tried not to take a wicked pleasure at the blush that crept across his dark complexion.
“Oh, one more thing,” whispered her host, bending over to the girl, “it’s considered polite to not look when they’re outside the water.”
Kieren laughed at Sorore’s own furious blush as she made for one of the poolside changing screens.

2023.06.10 04:59 SilverSpotter Beautiful Dreamer [F4A][Dreaming][Established Relationship][Coping with Loss][Returning Memories]

For the VA: You are playing the role of "Rem", a living dream that exists within the listeners mind. You've been fine with your circumstances until you've been noticing signs that you and your dreamer might be separated forever.
Unsure of what's going to happen to yourself, you've been doing your best to just try and accept your fate, and cherish your remaining time with your dreamer.
___________________________________________________________________________
All sound effects are encouraged, but still optional.
Feel free to change the dialogue to your liking, or even completely improvise. Whatever you need to make the lines feel more natural. What matters is keeping the general story the same.
You may absolutely monetize this, but if you should place this product behind a paywall, I would appreciate a copy of the performance.
Feel free to ask any questions or bring up any concerns, should they come up.
___________________________________________________________________________
Context: While resting in bed, you feel a blissful pull on your mind into the darkness of sleep. To your surprise, you hear a voice calling out as clear as day, and you feel compelled to respond.
___________________________________________________________________________

Rem: (Softly) "Baby? Are you here?" (Relieved on finding the listener) There you are! It was pretty hard to see you this time."
[Listener: "Who are you? Where am I?"]
Rem: (Light chuckle) "You're dreaming again. Don't worry though. It normally takes you a little while to get your memory back. It's kind of my favorite part of the dream. I like seeing you react to things for the first time all over again.
Oh! But do I look familiar? Even if you don't remember me, I should look familiar at least.
(Smug chuckle while she gives the dreamer a moment) No? Don't worry. I can see your eyes light up when you look at me, even if you don't think you remember."
[Listener: "Why is it so dark then?"]
Rem: "Its always been this dark in the beginning. You always meet me here at the first stage of REM sleep. Actually, that's why we thought "Rem" would be a good name for me!
... (Bashful) I'm glad I'm the first thing you think of when you fall asleep."
[As if cutting off the dreamer]
Rem: "Shh! Hold that thought! Look! You're starting to dream! Well. Dream more.
(Curious) What is that anyway? A road?"
[Splashing sounds]
Rem: "Oof! Am asphalt road on water. What the heck? Hurry! Get on the road!"
[Dreamer talks]
Rem: "Why is there a road on the water? Like I said, it's a dream. This is far from the weirdest thing you've dreamed about. (Mischievous giggle)"
[Dreamer: "What else did I dream of?"]
Rem: "You wanna hear one? Hmm... There was this time that we were in a school together, but the classrooms were modified to be pig pens. And your old classmates, from elementary school, were still kids, and still bullying you. They tried to get you to go down a drain in the pens? I don't know. It was weird. You ended up flying away anyway. I guess you took the roof off the building, because I don't remember crashing through any ceiling!
(Laughing) What? You asked! I'm just a dream along for the ride! I have no control over the weird plot twists the other dreams take."
[Seeing something nearby]
Rem: "Oh! Look! A car! A Ford Model T, but still a car. We can probably get out of here if we take that. Don't worry. I'll drive."
[Dreamer talks while the two get into the car]
Rem: "Yup! That's another way you found out I'm real; I know some things you don't. I guess I just like vintage cars more than you?"
[Starts with any car engine sound and begins to drive]
Rem: "I don't remember anything before your dreams, but I know things about the world that you don't. We felt this confirmed that I'm alive. A "real dream". Just not a dream-come-true..."
[Dreamer talks]
Rem: "That's what I said, actually! You were the one who pointed out that, no matter how lucid the dream, you could never alter me in any major way. Go ahead!
(Proudly, playfully defiant) I am immune to your power!"
[Dreamer: "Do you call me dreamer?"]
Rem: (Softly) "Yeah. I do call you dreamer. See? You're remembering! Do you remember why?"
[Dreamer doesn't, so Rem begins humming the song 'Beautiful Dreamer' for a moment]
Rem: "The song, Beautiful Dreamer.
(Enamored) You... You sang it to me after you realized I was real."
[Dreamer: "On our first date."]
Rem: (Gasps in surprise) "You remembered! Yes! On our first date.
(In a monotone voice) That makes you my dream girl!
(Normal voice) Nice try, buster. You say that line each time.
(Giggling) But it always makes me smile."
[Stopping the car]
Rem: "After you sang to me I told you that I'm a dream, not a dreamer. You didn't like thinking about me like that though, so I started hammering it into your head over and over again by calling you the dreamer. And it stuck at some point. But with a fondness I feel for you."
[Dreamer asks why they stopped]
Rem: "What? We've driven far enough that I'm sure nothing new is going to happen, so we can just park it for now. And while you were busy marveling at your exceptionally beautiful girlfriend, I noticed the water started to act up around us. Rocks and waves are showing up out of the water."
[Dreamer: "How long have we been together?"]
Rem: "I was worried you'd ask how long we've been together. Ugh. I suck at math. How long have we been together in real time? About two years, four weeks, and five days."
[Sounds of crashing waves and seagulls in the background]
Rem: "How long have we been together in dream time? Over forty years, I think?"
[Dreamer says something causing Rem to burst out laughing]
Rem: "Wait! I just told you that we've been dating for over forty years and you just noticed I look like your ideal partner? That's what I was saying when I asked if I look familiar. Why did you realize it just now?"
[Dreamer: "I was imagining how lucky I am to spend forty years with you."]
Rem: (Hitched gasp, followed by light crying) "No! I'm sorry. That was really sweet of you to say. I-I'm lucky to have spent these past few decades with you too!...
(Sniffle) I-it's just... Um... I don't want it to end..."
[Dreamer talks]
Rem: "No. I'm not talking about you just waking up... When you wake up, I'm still here, somewhere in your daydreams... It's just... The dreams have been getting shorter. Really short... We think it means... Well..."
[Dreamer speaks]
Rem: "... Yeah. That we might never see each other one day. We don't know if I'm dying, or if a dream's fantasy is just coming to an end... We're not sure of much about it.
(Sniffles) You've been a dream come true to me. And I don't want it to end... But I don't think you'll remember me entirely before you wake up."
[Dreamers hugs Rem, causing her voice to tremble with sorrow]
Rem: "Th-thank you, Dreamer. Even with all of this, I still feel better in your arms."
[Deep sigh, and a slightly more cheery tone]
Rem: "No, really. I do feel better. It's just... I'm feeling a lot of emotions right now."
[Dreamer: "Maybe we can get someone to help?"]
Rem: "Dreamer, I love you, but you ask that every time. I know you can't help it, so I'll just keep it simple; Who could possibly help us? Whenever you wake up, you forget everything that happened. Sometimes you remember bits and pieces, and you get the cutest smile on your face, even when you can't remember why you're so happy.
(Sigh) We've spent years trying to think of a way out of this, so please, just let me... Let me enjoy the time I have left with you."
[Dreamer agrees]
Rem: "Thank you, baby."
[Deep breath to compose herself]
Rem: "So! What are you dreaming about now? No offense, but this kind of looks... Boring? Its a pretty night sky, a full moon, some rocks near the road- OH! I think I see mermaids!"
[Pointing out]
Rem: "There! See?...
(Confused) What?
(Playfully annoyed) Oh puh-lease! I literally look like your ideal woman. Between me and them? It's no contest. Just look! They're singing something, I think. I can't hear anything though... You can't hear them either? Huh. Not the weirdest thing you've dreamed of."
[Rem suddenly remembering]
Rem: "Oh! Do you wanna know what the weirdest thing you dreamed of was?"
[Dreamer replies]
Rem: "OK, so! Do you remember that little house you grew up in when you were little?
[Sound begins to fade away for a time skip]
Rem: "Right! Well, part of it was a castle in a swamp, and- Shush! I know it doesn't make sense, let me finish the story!"
[Sound fades back in as a unknown amount of time has passed]
Rem: "So you put me in your satchel, and jumped out of its mouth, but for some reason, my top half couldn't go all the way into the satchel this time.
(Laughing) Yes! So you do remember! Oh my God! I was so pissed off after my head bumped into its teeth. The teeth broke, but I had such a bad headache after that, I just couldn't keep my eyes from watering."
[Dreamer talks]
Rem: "No! I wasn't crying! Don't you think if I was crying I would've worked out as many pity points as I could get from you?
(Smug chuckle) Yeah, OK. Pity points got us into that mess, but I really wasn't crying! We'd have missed the dance if I wasted too much time."
[Dreamer talks]
Rem: "Right? That was so fun! I'm not even a fan of disco, but I had to see that through."
[Laughing before letting out a deep and happy sigh]"
[Dreamer: "Wow. Can I get tired in dreams?"]
Rem: (Sadly) "Yeah... You can get tired in dreams. It happens right before you wake up."
[Dreamer talks]
Rem: "No. Its not like when you're awake. You can't force yourself to stay awake. Eventually you'll fade back to reality."
[Dreamer replies]
Rem: "I don't want you to go either!... But I don't want our last moments to be desperate and scared.
[Dreamer kisses Rem, allowing her to let out a relaxed sigh]
Rem: "Thank you, baby. [Pleased giggle] Here. Why don't you lay your head on my lap?"
[Interrupting Dreamer]
Rem: "Shhh... Don't worry about that right now... Thank you."
[Giggling again as Dreamer rests their head on her lap]
Rem: "Yeah. You probably couldn't do this in a regular car, but this isn't a regular car. Comfy? Good!..."
[Deep breath]
Rem: "Even the sun in here is starting to rise... Yeah. It's OK. Just relax..."
[A moment goes by before Rem begins to sing Beautiful Dreamer, but gets interrupted partway through with a whoosh, as Dreamer vanishes]
Rem: (Urgently) "Dreamer? Dreamer!"
[Rem begins to cry, but tries to compose herself by singing again. She changes the first few words to 'Beautiful Dreamer, don't forget me', and the audio fades to an end as she continues to sing through her tears.]

My current bass pedal situation
This is a work in progress. I think I’m going to ditch the Big Muff, it’s too aggressive for me to use at church. Also I think I’m going to run through through a Saturnworks 5 loop pedal. But I may have a problem. I have 2 chorus pedals and I have a Boss CE-2W coming in a few weeks. Other then cable management does anyone have suggestions?

2023.06.10 04:37 PanchoBaker Looking for come clarification here

I mean Claude Harmon III calling it all the Truman Show was a lights on moment for me and the timing of this seems to perpetuate that thought.
I'll take my answer off air as the theme song to CHiPs plays me out

2023.06.10 04:32 Technical-Car Did TVFilthyFrank make you guys realize that much or possibly the bulk of viral content is complete trash/uninspiring?

I'm talking cooking videos, pranks, vlogging*, politics, full length car review videos**, reaction videos, anime reviews, manga reviews, internet in-fighting, hell even many science-oriented videos***, crime-related news^, sexually suggestive content (no need for explanation). Oh yeah, I can't forget drone videos with all their awkward views.

I'd love to hear what else you guys find trashy after watching Frank.
* There are seriously channels mostly devoted to walking around and recording then uploading the video with no edits or commentary. Like WTF. Who watches these versus just looking at pictures? "Eh guys I'm in Central Park, let's get this video to 3 million views."

** I think these videos are primarily watched by people with too much free time. Sitting in a car gives can make or break a car for you. Driving one for a day can make or break it for you as well. Shorts were better than this. I get the feeling it's mostly teens or people with not that much money who can use it fantasize.

*** A lot of them just repeat factoids that would have been covered in science TV channels or books well before Youtube.

^ Yes recommendation algo, I want to learn more about this case in a state that I don't live in and people I don't care for. End up clicking on a bunch of these anyway . Crime reports seem to have shown that criminals for the most part aren't interesting; they're just dumb. Just use your common sense.

2023.06.10 04:21 anonbeyondgfw VW Atlas or Honda Odyssey for family use?

Have been doing test drives and shopping around for a family vehicle. We are not in a hurry what so ever but want to start looking and gather information to make informed decision.
Lately we went to a number of local dealerships and below are summaries of our experience.
Toyota: almost no cars in lot. All vehicles including Sienna are by allocation only and with markups. Prius ~$3k and Sienna $5-8k. Dealers would call you if something close to what you want is allocated and if you want it a $1000 deposits is required to secure your “spot”. I was polite but screaming inside “no way in hell” and left.
VW: test drove a V6 Atlas. Smooth ride, doesn’t feel clumsy given the size and profile. steering wheel feels very light, which caught me off guard because in my mind “German steering is heavy unlike flimsy Korean cars” thanks to my Audi sedan. Room is ample, even the third row is actually functional. Major downside OFC is the MPG. We knew it’s gonna be pretty bad with a V6 but our test drive was 11mpg. Still, we like it.
Honda: test drove a used Odyssey. Very nimble for a minivan, changing lanes feels as smooth as it can be. Ample power to overtake. Stowable seats and total 8 seats are absolutely appreciated. However the one we test drove had some electrical issues. Overall, I like the Odyssey. In my area tons of households got one.
Mazda: tried CX90 turbo premium. It reminds me more of a German car for sure. Steering wheel feels heavier, you can feel the power of the inline 6. interior also beautiful, love all those buttons. However the 3rd row was not practical, legroom kinda ok BUT 2nd row seats and rails are in the way of 3rd row passenger’s feet, which renders the legroom useless.
Kia: tried carnival, top trim. Ample rooms and seats. Tech overload, the blind spot camera footage shows up when turning light is on, very useful feature. However, the interior feels shallow, you can feel a sense of cheapness in their imitation of “luxury.” For example, nicely looking leather covers the seat, the back though is covered in black synthetic materials and stitched with the leather. Trust me when I say the work was not done nicely and lack of any craftsmanship is notable. Then again it’s a sub 50k vehicle so corner cutting is expected. What really drove me away was the bumpy ride and super super light steering wheel, plus the drag. Yes when driving a carnival you can absolutely feel the weight, unlike Odyssey. Less nimble, way less. A big mark up was also asked.
In the end we are focusing on Atlas and Odyssey. I’m the kinda guy who does too much research when making big purchases. So I looked around to learn more about the reliability of both models. Sources include car forums, caredge, carcomplaints, consumer report etc. boy oh boy the more I look the less I want to buy car at all because issues are all over the place for both models. Hence now turning to the only place that matter, Reddit, to pick your guy’s brain. Which one I should go for?

2023.06.10 04:05 Givemethatea Friday night and I feel like a massive loser for being sad over this shit

In 2019 I had added this guy whom I thought was cute I slid in his dms but he only answered once. FAST FORWARD to winter 2020 I saw him on a dating app (my first time on a dating app) and I thought all the stars aligned I dmd him on the app we were friends on, he asked me for a selfie on snap, and he (RED FLAG maybe debatable) he snap chatted me shirtless even though it was like 3 degrees outside ? He was inside his apartment but it’s like did you take the shirt off to Snapchat me? Thirsty much? Whatever.. I remember I would snap him like 2-3xs and he would leave me on opened. I feel like I manifest him into my life. However, one day my sister was at her fiancés house and she’s like you should come over. I didn’t even do my hair I just put on a cute jacket and makeup on. This was the first nice day out after a LONG ASS winter so I was feeling myself in just the light jacket. I decided to post a selfie onto my Snapchat story, well he watched it in fact he was the first one to watch it right away. After that selfie he never ignored me again. That snap comes up on my snap memories now and I cringe. Bad vibes all around. It was peak covid and everyone was home, I said wtf do I have to lose I sent him my number right away like a minute later I look at my phone and he’s like hey it’s so and so here’s my address come over (RED FLAG #1) I said NO. I’m not going to say what he’ll text me bc it’s a lot to type but he basically manipulated me into having sex with him. Fine, I’ll give an example, one time im like I’m not coming bc hello it was quarantine and you needed permission to be out lmao and tbh I didn’t want to go, but he would be like well you’re scared, or you’re dumb for not coming. He never told me but I’m not stupid he was like in love with my boobs. I say that because the moment I walked in he tried taking my top off. One day I was bored so I snapped him my boobs, and he immediately was like come over. Anyways, he had asked me for head and I said NO before we linked up. I was caught off guard because he had never asked me to perform oral sex on him in the month and a half we were talking til the day I was about to come over. I also never thought that he’d bring it up since I had said no let alone pressure me. I go to his apartment and he basically gets naked and tells me to do it and puts it right in front of my face. And this guy is over 6ft and muscular and I just felt like I had to do it because he was so mad at me. In front of me close to my face that I didn’t have any other choice. His room was small ass shit honestly i didn’t even think it was a bedroom it looked like it was a convertible and you can only fit the bed in there. I felt so trapped. (insert the panic attack I’m having right now thinking that somehow he’ll read this) the day I came over was a year anniversary from when I slid in his dms, and my dumb ass was like oh yeah I can get any guy I want a year ago today I slid in his dms now I’m in his house. I was sitting in his bed and he out of nowhere started rubbing me and fingering me and I didn’t even like it even though the fingering was consensual. I was over him at that point. He was ALWAYS mad at me, because I didn’t give him what he wanted, or I played games, or I was being awkward because I didn’t seem down for it.
Can we take a moment to acknowledge how stupid I was and never once did I think he was manipulating me. Not once did I think about blocking him, or deleting him. I remember I would dread him texting me. I know I don’t owe anyone anything, but after like a month of him constantly asking me, I felt like I owed it to him. He checked all the boxes, and I had never been/talked to a guy that was as successful as him so I felt like I had to somehow see this guy. Well I get to his apartment and we didn’t have intercourse bc he was mad at me. When he saw that I was about to leave and we didn’t have intercourse he tried to physically abuse me. My stupid ass still told him to kiss me and he did. But the moment I walked out to the elevator I’m like what the fuck just happened. There’s no way we talk again.
OK I wanted to give a quick round of what happened, but I left out the texts he would text me trying to get me to come over, but this has ruined my entire life. I hate everything. I hate my job, where I live, he moved and now I HATE THIS CITY. I have thought about this everyday for 3 years since it happened. I hate that I have to think about it everyday and still have to go to therapy, journal, and do stupid breathing exercises while he’s out thriving living his normal life doing I don’t know what the fuck across the country. I told my therapist I didn’t want to put the work in oh well. Also, he told me he had a roster so why the fuck me or why couldn’t he get sex from other girls if that’s what he wanted? That drives me insane. This professional was like a guy wants what he wants. OK? Still why me? Did he think I was fucking KIM KARDASHIAN. I reached out to him and he threatens to sue me and denied everything. I told him straight up why me? Out of everyone me? And he ignored me. Then blocked me on the app, and my phone number. I feel so defeated. The moment my therapist asks why I didn’t press charges i spiral. Hookup scene by Kacey Musgraves makes me bawl my eyes out. I have had to ignore successful and some hot guy that wanted to talk to me all thanks to him. Now the hot guy won’t even reply to me bc I ghosted him a while back. Even though he’s single and on a dating app I heard. It’s so hard to put on this face mask for a year whenever I’m with my family and act like everything is rainbows and sunshine because they don’t know. And they’ll never know my Mom would trash me if she found out. She’s judgy AF. She’ll be like why did you go. You looked for it. Sexual Assault is so fucking Traumatizing. I wouldn’t wish this shit on my worst enemy. I’m tired. Sorry I just needed to rant. If you’re still reading then you’re the real MVP.

2023.06.10 04:03 Emergency-Bowler7115 Am I the only one?

I have noticed that every time someone talks to me my brain fogs up and I forget everything! Including my name sometimes. It’s pretty bad. I’m tired of being like this. I’m tired of living with social anxiety. I want to be able to make friends and be outgoing, I wasn’t always like this. I used to go up to people and introduce myself, make small talk, look people in the eyes, and I had so many friends. Now, I deleted all of my social media because I felt like I didn’t really have any friends on there, just people from my past and I got tired of seeing their posts whenever they accomplished things in life because I’d start comparing myself to them and felt like dog crap. It was just getting to be an unhealthy thing. I feel like I’m completely isolated. I’m unemployed and attending college. My husband works from 7-4:30 m-f so I’m pretty alone throughout the day. My husband is way more introverted than I am. He hates people and hates social interactions. He is able to play video games all day and not leave home for days. I feel like his ways are rubbing off on me now and I’m becoming like him and I’m scared. I just want friends.
I’m always home because I guess I’ve developed the fear of going out. The only times I leave my home is when I have to take my dogs out to go potty, when I have to grocery shop, and when I drive to and from school campus. I avoid going out so I could avoid people. Every time I pass by strangers I put on my fake smile and just try to look them in the eyes but lately when people try to have a conversation with me I tend to rush the convo so I could go back to being alone. I’ll give an example. Today my apartment complex manager was outside, he said “hello, how’s it going?” I said, “good, and you?” And then he started telling me about his day… I can’t even recall the entire convo because my brain was so dogged and all I wanted at the time was for it to end. So all I kept saying was “yeah… oh that’s good… oh wow! … yeah” and felt like such a dumbass cause I kept telling him “alright, well…” trying to get the words out of my mouth.. “we’ll see you later”. I couldn’t get the words out. I feel like he sensed my social anxiety in trying to end the convo because he said, “thank you for asking how I’m doing.” And to that I said, “yeah”. I feel like such a lost cause and although I crave the social interactions, I also dread the social interactions. Needless to say, that interaction took so much of my energy and I immediately started feeling lethargic. Anyway, that’s enough venting for the day. Phew! I feel a little lighter now that I got my thoughts out in the universe. Thanks for reading.

2023.06.10 03:47 Nearby-Plantain-6314 "Confused customer" tries to get her almost $15 order for free and demands an app refund at the window DURING PEAK! Then comes back later for a second attempt. BTW large rant and explanation.

Alrighty, as the title says, a customer at my location recently tried to get all her order for free by showing me (i was on window), my coworker on DTO, a coworker on front and the shift manager on duty an OLD mobile order from the other location in town with completely different items. As a barista that has been working for the company for almost a year, I have never been so confused by a customer's intentions.
First, the items in her drive-thru order were a grande iced decaf almond milk vanilla latte with golden foam and caramel drizzle, for reference. A grande iced latte is at an average of $4.25 plus $0.70 for the vanilla syrup, plus $0.80 for the almond milk and another $0.80 of the caramel drizzle and then $2.00 for the new oleato golden foam on top. As well as an order of the egg white egg bites which is $4.65, this is all WITHOUT tax. Her order again WITHOUT tax is about $13.20. When she got up to the window after about a two-minute wait (the cars in front of her got larger orders so it took some time), she didn't have enough money on her app, which that's fine it happens all the time and no one at my location gets annoyed by it. She proceeds to complain about how much the order is even though she could have just ordered a decaf iced vanilla almond milk latte for the drink. When it comes to paying she tries to reload the gift card and it doesn't work, she has me scan her card thru the app. An error message pops up, no big deal we had some technology issues that day so I asked if she had a card with her. She hands me a credit card, declined, then her debit card, declined. Then she shows the receipt for a mobile order that was not only sent to the other location in town but also from a different day, with different items. We gladly offer to make the mobile order if it was sent to the wrong location, but the fact it was also from a different day, we didn't offer to make the drink or food for her.
The mobile order had a pink drink and an order of bacon egg bites, I'm using the price of a grande pink drink because she got a grande iced latte. A grande pink drink is $4.45 and the bacon egg bites are also on average $4.65 which is $9.10 WITHOUT tax. The lady at the window proceeds to say "I accidentally put in a mobile order but I don't want the extra items, but I want my current order for free because I already paid for the items" She said that loud enough for my coworker on DTO to hear and he walked over and asked her "I'm sorry ma'am but could you repeat what you said?" he had what my location calls the infinity headset because we only have one of those headsets. He had the headset on so the other baristas with headsets could hear and the shift manager on duty was on warming so she had a headset and heard the entire thing. The next thing I hear is the shift manager swiftly walking over to the window and she tells the woman about how we aren't able to make her pay the difference at the moment because of the technical issues we were having and asks to see the receipt. Next thing that my shift manager asks for another card or form of payment because the mobile order is from a different day. On the screenshot, the time was 3:30 pm and it was 9:45 am on that day. The lady asks for a manager and the shift goes "I am the manager on duty, so you have the options to pay for your items or have a nice day" Latte lady hands cash to the shift manager then receives her items then screams "I AM FILING A COMPLAINT TO CORPORATE"
Fast forward 4 hours she comes thru the cafe and asks for the same things as her drive-thru order and shows a different coworker on the front the old mobile order, he is a little newer so he asked over the headset for the shift manager to come to the front for some help. When the same shift comes from the back she sees the same lady and says "Ma'am, I'm sorry but I am using my right to not serve you because you are trying to get items for free from older purchases for the second time today. Have a nice day ma'am" then the latte lady stomps out and once again screams in our cafe "I AM FILING COMPLAINTS TO CORPORATE AND YOU ALL WILL BE FIRED"
Sorry for the long story but I was so confused and baffled, so here ya go. Have a wonderful day and night y'all :)

2023.06.10 03:46 jack_2403 I think my family has been gaslighting me and I'm not sure what I should do to remedy the situation

So, for context, I am a 19 year old female, I am the youngest of 3 kids, my older brother being 25, and my older sister being 26. When I was a kid, I was very gullible, and when my siblings told me things that I couldn't easily confirm to be false I had a hard time figuring out if they were lying or not, and being a kid, I was still very innocent and trusting, so when my siblings would say things, I believed them because I didn't think they would lie to me. They would then tell me after, being anywhere from immediately after I said I believed them, to a few hours later, to even a few days later, that they were "just kidding". It got worse as I got older, as I still had difficulty telling if they were telling the truth or not, as they would often times treat me like I was an idiot when I wasn't sure if they were telling the truth or not. Sometime last year, my doctor told me that I have a very high likelihood of having ASD, and I began to understand why I was always so confused about whether or not they were being honest, and I could never read their facial expressions or their tones, but my mom denied that I have ASD and said that if I had it, that they would have caught it when I was a kid, and that it must be something else. I'm still unsure if I actually have it, not because of the doctor, I trust their belief that I have it, but because my mom seems to deny it so heavily. Yesterday, my brother and his girlfriend who is visiting us from another country came home from being out shopping, and I noticed a tattoo on my brother's arm, and I pointed at it and asked "what is that?" He looked at me, and so did his girlfriend and my sister, and my sister said he got a tattoo, to which I denied, because he repeatedly expressed his distaste for my tattoo when I got it, and said he would never get one. My brother and his girlfriend both jumped on the bandwagon and started telling me that he really did get a tattoo, and that he only has had one session so far, but he'll get it finished soon and that's why it wasn't a full sleeve yet, just part of his forearm. I started to get really confused and freaked out because I couldn't tell if they were messing with me or not, as I kept denying that it was real, and they kept pushing that it was. I eventually just leaned back on the counter, trying to process if they were being honest or not, and then I asked my mom if it was real, and even she said "why do you think I had to go with? He needed someone to drive him since you aren't supposed to drive after a tattoo" and even my dad joined in and said "I hate when they don't let you drive home by yourself after stuff, anything really" now I was so sure that the tattoos were faked because I am the only one in my immediate family who has a tattoo, and none of them have ever expressed interest in tattoos before, but with everyone telling me that it was real, I started to believe them, until my mom finally said "J, they're kidding" and I immediately felt myself getting upset because I felt like they were gaslighting or manipulating me. The girlfriend even tried to continue it until my sister told her that my mom already told me and she just said "oh, well ok" and just went back to behaving normally. I'm really confused and hurt because I feel like they all do this constantly, and my brothers gf never did this before, but I think because she sees my siblings and parents do this stuff all the time, she thinks it's normal for us and joins in, not seeming to realize how much it hurts and confuses me. I don't know what I should do, if I should try to talk to them about it, and honestly I feel myself tearing up as I type this, because of how much it hurts me when I know that I don't mean to be this confused all the time, and I want them to stop but I'm worried that I'm just making a big deal out of nothing, I just really need some advice on what to do in this scenario.
