Family! COVID long term health impact thread. (high post)

2023.06.08 10:51 No-Seaworthiness2642 Family! COVID long term health impact thread. (high post)

Hello fellows, familia. Grab a coffee/joint/gamersupp.
This is just a public health awareness thread about some little known things amongst the normans. Reddit wont let me post links, but what I will do is post study title and authors/year, and some cases abstract copy paste. I will do at the bottom after the statements.
So, as you all know, COVID is a thing still, and many didn't actually know what it was capable of, outside of comparisons to other coronaviruses and the acute illness. Right now, acute illness is incredibly manageable, but the long term effects on organs is becoming alarming, even in mild cases. So lets take it from the top, so we are on the same page. We will start on organ systems and virus character.
So, covid is pretty much a vascular virus, which seems to disrupt vasculature. Lets start before vaccines to demonstrate to those among us suspicious that the vaccine is the cause. (Its fine to worry about tech, i dont judge).
Every person in Sweden diagnosed with COVID-19 from Feb. 1, 2020, to Sept. 14, 2020 — a total of nearly 87,000 people. Their median age was 48, and 57% were women. Researchers compared them with more than 348,000 Swedish people of similar age and sex who did not have the virus.
In the week after a COVID-19 diagnosis, the risk of a first heart attack increased by three to eight times. The risk of a first stroke caused by a blood clot multiplied by three to six times. In the following weeks, both risks decreased steadily but stayed elevated for at least a month.
Thats PRE vax. In a population which probably have the obesity % of the US and a healthy hiking and outdoor culture. US obesity rate is 40%+. Sweden perhaps half or less. Also, viral load on exposure can be a large determination of severity acutely, but perhaps also viral creep inside the body and the resulting dysfunction and damage.

Risk of Cardiovascular Events after Covid-19: a double-cohort study Objective To determine absolute and relative risks of either symptomatic or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection for late cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality.
Conclusions Either symptomatic or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with increased risk of late cardiovascular outcomes and has causal effect on all-cause mortality in a late post-COVID-19 period
Characteristics of a COVID-19 Cohort With Large Vessel Occlusion: A Multicenter International Study

CONCLUSION:

COVID-19 was an independent predictor of incomplete revascularization and poor outcomes in patients with stroke due to LVO. Patients with COVID-19 with LVO were younger, had fewer cerebrovascular risk factors, and suffered from higher morbidity/mortality rates.
Long-term cardiac pathology in individuals with mild initial COVID-19 illness
In this cohort of selected previously well and home-isolating individuals initially evaluated at a median of 109 days and followed-up at 329 days after diagnosis of COVID-19 infection, respectively, the ongoing cardiac symptoms were related to mild but notable imaging findings, suggesting inflammatory cardiac involvement. At baseline, participants with cardiac symptoms had higher mapping values, suggesting diffuse myocardial inflammation, and more frequent pericardial enhancement, suggesting pericardial inflammatory involvement compared to asymptomatic participants. At follow-up, 53% of the cohort had persistent cardiac symptoms, whereas new symptoms developed in 5%.
Transcriptomic profiling of cardiac tissues from SARS-CoV-2 patients identifies DNA damage
In this study, we investigated the host transcriptome landscape of cardiac tissues collected at rapid autopsy from seven SARS-CoV-2, two pH1N1, and six control patients using targeted spatial transcriptomics approaches. Although SARS-CoV-2 was not detected in cardiac tissue, host transcriptomics showed upregulation of genes associated with DNA damage and repair, heat shock, and M1-like macrophage infiltration in the cardiac tissues of COVID-19 patients. The DNA damage present in the SARS-CoV-2 patient samples, were further confirmed by γ-H2Ax immunohistochemistry.
In comparison, pH1N1 showed upregulation of interferon-stimulated genes, in particular interferon and complement pathways, when compared with COVID-19 patients. These data demonstrate the emergence of distinct transcriptomic profiles in cardiac tissues of SARS-CoV-2 and pH1N1 influenza infection supporting the need for a greater understanding of the effects on extra-pulmonary organs, including the cardiovascular system of COVID-19 patients, to delineate the immunopathobiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and long term impact on health.

Potential Effects of Coronaviruses on the Cardiovascular SystemA Review

'Coronavirus disease 2019 is associated with a high inflammatory burden that can induce vascular inflammation, myocarditis, and cardiac arrhythmias. Extensive efforts are underway to find specific vaccines and antivirals against SARS-CoV-2. Meanwhile, cardiovascular risk factors and conditions should be judiciously controlled per evidence-based guidelines.'

2022
Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19
our results provide evidence that the risk and 1-year burden of cardiovascular disease in survivors of acute COVID-19 are substantial. Care pathways of those surviving the acute episode of COVID-19 should include attention to cardiovascular health and disease.
Acute and postacute sequelae associated with SARS-CoV-2 reinfection
The evidence shows that reinfection further increases risks of death, hospitalization and sequelae in multiple organ systems in the acute and postacute phase. Reducing overall burden of death and disease due to SARS-CoV-2 will require strategies for reinfection prevention.
2020
Long covid: Damage to multiple organs presents in young, low risk patients
Initial data from 201 patients suggest that almost 70% had impairments in one or more organs four months after their initial symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
SARS-CoV-2 infection and persistence in the human body and brain at autopsy
We show that SARS-CoV-2 is widely distributed, predominantly among patients who died with severe COVID-19, and that virus replication is present in multiple respiratory and non-respiratory tissues, including the brain, early in infection. Further, we detected persistent SARS-CoV-2 RNA in multiple anatomic sites, including throughout the brain, as late as 230 days following symptom onset in one case. Despite extensive distribution of SARS-CoV-2 RNA throughout the body, we observed little evidence of inflammation or direct viral cytopathology outside the respiratory tract. Our data indicate that in some patients SARS-CoV-2 can cause systemic infection and persist in the body for months.

Endothelial dysfunction in COVID-19: an overview of evidence, biomarkers, mechanisms and potential therapies

SARS-CoV-2 infection primarily affects the pulmonary system, but accumulating evidence suggests that it also affects the pan-vasculature in the extrapulmonary systems by directly (via virus infection) or indirectly (via cytokine storm), causing endothelial dysfunction (endotheliitis, endothelialitis and endotheliopathy) and multi-organ injury.
Mounting evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to multiple instances of endothelial dysfunction, including reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, oxidative stress, endothelial injury, glycocalyx/barrier disruption, hyperpermeability, inflammation/leukocyte adhesion, senescence, endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT), hypercoagulability, thrombosis and many others. Thus, COVID-19 is deemed as a (micro)vascular and endothelial disease

Lingering cardiac involvement in previously well people after mild COVID-19

The mild but persistent non-ischemic cardiac inflammation that we describe in this study was not associated with overt structural heart disease or troponin release. Although it is triggered by a viral infection, profound myocardial injury or functional impairment is not typical, contrary to the classical definition of viral myocarditis2. Its pathophysiology is more reminiscent of findings in other chronic diffuse inflammatory syndromes that occur post-virally (for example, human immunodeficiency virus–associated cardiomyopathy)3or as a result of autoimmunity (for example, systemic lupus erythematosus4,5). In these cases, persistent subclinical cardiovascular inflammation seems to predispose people to a poor prognosis and the development of heart failure. Non-ischemic cardiac inflammatory involvement is therefore emerging as an important risk factor, and the long-term prognostic relevance of post-acute COVID-19 cardiac involvement in previously healthy people with mild initial COVID-19 illness requires further investigation.

Outcomes of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients Recently Recovered From Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Conclusions and Relevance In this study of a cohort of German patients recently recovered from COVID-19 infection, CMR revealed cardiac involvement in 78 patients (78%) and ongoing myocardial inflammation in 60 patients (60%), independent of preexisting conditions, severity and overall course of the acute illness, and time from the original diagnosis. These findings indicate the need for ongoing investigation of the long-term cardiovascular consequences of COVID-19.

Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

Kamath, Vasantha; Anand, R.1; Radhakrishnan, Buvana1; Markanday, Kushal1
Post-COVID-19 “recovery” cannot be gauged solely on a negative polymerase chain reaction or hospital discharge. There is remarkable variation in the duration, severity, and fluctuation of symptoms, which can affect survivors’ quality of life, functional status, cognition, and mood, and lead to severe disability. Given the global scale of this pandemic, it is apparent that the health-care needs for patients with sequelae of COVID-19 will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.

Immune system deviations?
We heard initial outbreaks of fungal infections of various types. Yes any infection can cause reduction in immune cells. Either because the immune system is busy diverted into tissues, fighting infection, or from apoptosis etc.
The deposits of antigens or viral pieces in many parts of the body, is perhaps causing problems, but also there appears to be markers of T cell exhaustion in some with high PD1 expression on some important immune cells too?
Long COVID following mild SARS-CoV-2 infection: characteristic T cell alterations and response to antihistamines Patients with long-COVID had reduced CD4+ and CD8+ effector memory (EM) cell numbers and increased PD-1 (programmed cell death protein 1) expression on central memory (CM) cells, whereas the asymptomatic participants had reduced CD8+ EM cells only and increased CD28 expression on CM cells. 72% of patients with long COVID who received HRA reported clinical improvement
The risk of pancreatic adenocarcinoma following SARS-CoV family infection
Our findings suggest that pancreatic adenocarcinoma is the most probably malignancy happening after infection with SARS-CoV family
The SARS-CoV-2 E protein induces Toll-like receptor 2-mediated neonatal lung injury in a model of COVID-19 viremia that is rescued by the glucocorticoid ciclesonide
This study provides insight into the pathogenesis of ALI and alveolar remodeling with SARS-CoV-2 viremia in children, whereas revealing the efficacy of steroids.
A new case-control study of Brazilian healthcare workers(HCWs) suggests as many as 27% developed long COVID after infection, and multiple infections raised the risk. The findings were published today in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.
Estimates of the prevalence of long COVID, defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as new, returning, or lasting symptoms persisting 4 or more weeks after initial COVID-19 infection vary, with some studies showing as many as 43% of infected people will have some lingering symptoms 1 month after COVID-19 confirmation.

"39 (58%) patients (with glioma) experienced tumor progression following COVID-19 infection at a median of 34 days after testing positive for COVID-19.. 22 patients had measurably increased tumor area by a median of 63%; 18 of which constituted hyperprogression; 16 patients developed multifocal disease; 8 developed new nodular enhancement; 3 developed leptomeningeal disease (LMD); and 2 experienced increased infiltrative disease alone. 10 patients’ presentation with new glioma was preceded by COVID-19 infection by a median of 31 days. GBM (glioblastoma) patients represented the majority of progression events, among whom 59% progressed within 60 days of documented infection.. Glioma patients appear to have disease progression at an accelerated pace in the first two months after COVID-19 infection."

SARS-CoV-2 infection: The role of PD-1/PD-L1 and CTLA-4 axis
The most important diagnostic feature in individuals with COVID-19 is lymphocyte depletion, most importantly, T-cells. Due to the induction of interferon-γ (INF-γ) production by neutrophils and monocytes, which are abundantly present in the peripheral blood of the individuals with COVID-19, the expression of inhibitory immune checkpoints including, PD-1 (programmed death), PD-L1 and CTLA4 on the T-cells' surface is enhanced. The purpose of this review is to discuss the functions of these checkpoints and their effects on the dysfunction and exhaustion of T-cells, making them almost ineffective in individuals with COVID-19, especially in the cases with extreme symptoms.

COVID-19 and renal involvement: a prospective cohort study assessing the impact of mild SARS-CoV-2 infection on the kidney function of young healthy males
Mild COVID-19 is associated with mild renal involvement without AKI. Changes in the renal function appear to be related to reduced creatinine clearance and possible albumin leakage in the acute phase of the disease. The reduction in creatinine clearance is not predicted by viral load, and it appears to be a long-term effect of the disease that can last for at least 6 months.

Reduction and Functional Exhaustion of T Cells in Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
Conclusions: T cell counts are reduced significantly in COVID-19 patients, and the surviving T cells appear functionally exhausted. Non-ICU patients with total T cells counts lower than 800/μL may still require urgent intervention, even in the immediate absence of more severe symptoms due to a high risk for further deterioration in condition.

Brain

Cerebral blood flow in patients recovered from mild COVID-19
In this study, lower WM CBF, as well as widespread regional CBF changes identified using quantitative MRI, was found in mild COVID-19 patients. Further studies are needed to determine the reliability of this newly identified COVID-19 brain imaging marker and determine what drives these CBF changes.

Global Prevalence of Post-Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Condition or Long COVID: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

This study finds post-COVID-19 condition prevalence is substantial; the health effects of COVID-19 seem to be prolonged and can exert stress on the healthcare system.
Review articleBrain disorders: Impact of mild SARS-CoV-2 may shrink several parts of the brain
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a highly infectious respiratory infection discovered in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. As a result of the pandemic, several individuals have experienced life-threatening diseases, the loss of loved ones, lockdowns, isolation, an increase in unemployment, and household conflict. Moreover, COVID-19 may cause direct brain injury via encephalopathy. The long-term impacts of this virus on mental healthand brain function need to be analysed by researchers in the coming years. This article aims to describe the prolonged neurological clinical consequences related to brain changes in people with mild COVID-19 infection. When compared to a control group, people those who tested positive for COVID-19 had more brain shrinkage, grey matter shrinkage, and tissue damage. The damage occurs predominantly in areas of the brain that are associated with odour, ambiguity, strokes, reduced attention, headaches, sensory abnormalities, depression, and mental abilities for few months after the first infection. Therefore, in patients after a severe clinical condition of COVID-19, a deepening of persistent neurological signs is necessary.

2023.06.08 09:19 GuiltyCash6706 Have you ever been under investigation in relation by the CNO?

Hello, I wanted to start by saying this is a throw away account. I have received an email recently from the CNO stating that I was named in an investigation of a patient who has passed away shortly after discharge and the family filed a compliant due to issues arising in hospital stay. I have not received supporting documents to review and make a statement on. I am unaware of any other staff are being listed in the invitation or if it just me. If you have been in this position, is it best to seek legal counsel?

2023.06.08 08:40 Seenitdunit First "I.T job" now what?

Nothing is worse than getting into a job and finding out that it's not what you thought it was. So I decided to work for an insurance company that has recently bought out a certain "who-break-me-fix". My job is to deliver, activate, and diagnose any or all phones issues. The other half of my job is to sell insurance for in-home devices like a doorbell or TV. I come to find out I am actually pretty good at convincing a customer that the product is worth their time and money. I am the number one salesman 2 months in a row and I plan on aiming for number one for the third month at the end of this month. I am getting tired with the job already as I have to drive 500 miles+ a week for the job. The pay is great for what it is, 21/hourly+commission+65 cent per mile+30 dollar phone payment reimbursement. I also have a 5/5 star customer review so that shows I am pretty good with people. I want to find a different job but I am not sure where I can go with this jobs experience. I think about getting into a sales job like selling insurance or becoming a phone dealer but my real goal is to get into networking and I.T. My boyfriend wants me to complete my Security+ exam and work with him at a hospital, which would be cool, but I am not sure if I am ready to take the exam just yet. Any advice would be great, thank you

2023.06.08 08:01 XQV226 First Part of Jail Story and Reaction (December 20-21, 2022)

For my own sanity, I took a break from revisiting the lore of Stephen, but now I’m back into it. Ooh, Lordy. These two videos are something.
First up, we’ve got “in JAIL!! what happened?”: https://youtu.be/NB3PDtrmcK8
This video actually talks more about his EMDbinaural beats stuff while teasing the automatic writing than the actual jail story. He’s apparently claustrophobic, so he got panicky at various points during this evening and supposedly calmed himself by mentally channeling the music he’d been working on. He’s also now saying that he’s not claiming he invented it, which is interesting in light of previous comments he’s made about this.
As for the actual jail story, he was arrested for fighting and spent three hours at the police station before they took him to another location for booking. He says that he was standing up for himself after someone pushed him beyond his breaking point, whatever that means. He claims that the police told him he shouldn’t have been the one to be arrested, but he caused the most damage (property damage? it’s unclear). I would highly recommend watching this one or, at the very least, reading the YouTube transcript because he goes on for a bit about “masculine energy”, which is very interesting in light of what’s happening now.
Like a lot of the videos leading up to this, the comments are overwhelmingly expressing worry and concern for him. Here’s the one with the most likes:
I said all this yesterday, but it surely fits here too. Plus since more was divulged, it seems given the alarming story, there's still an attempt to bend the narrative to more of the toxicity mentioned below.
And I'll hammer it home until it sinks in: We're not here to poopoo what you're doing. We're not here to bring negative. We're here to help from our own experience. It truly does seem there's selective blocking. You don't like hearing truth, therefore it's false. You don't like the messages given, because it requires a modicum of personal accountability. And again I must ask, given the blocking, is this how you cope with others close to you when they give you truth? Is this why L said something to the effect of, I had to moderate his emotions and walk on eggshells? Are these the things that others oft shouldered?
I have my own opinions on the "masculine energy" but they're mirrored in other posts below.
"What one has to do I suppose is look at exactly how and why you ended up there.
I'm very tired of the tons of comments in re "you're so positive, it's your journey." Friend, this is worrisome in the extreme. You don't need "yes" men. You need truth friends. And if you've read my previous comments in re being mindful of the ones that depend on you, who loses when you run away, and suddenly stopping meds isn't wise, you'll know there are many folks in your comments who won't throw glitter at things in hopes it right's itself.
The ones giving you difficult truths aren't being mean or negative. We're concerned because we've been there. And toxic positivity can actively hurt people and negate what's actually real and tangible in your life.
Sometimes taking a mirror to yourself hurts. You can't bury the pain. You can't put an ointment of fangirls/boys/theys/thems or too much of a hardcore fan to see the forest for the trees, projects, etc to cover the issue. It'll always find it's way out and lather, rinse, repeat.
Just... be mindful of who's with you at your base right now. I mean, your parents are in CA ffs."
The next day, he releases “WOW!! ok….” (what a title!): https://youtu.be/rCLD_3cEjD4
At the end of the first video, he said there was a part two that he would share in the next video. But since the comments did not go his way, he decided that he didn’t want to because we’re being mean and judgmental about the binaural beats stuff. Except the binaural beats are far from the major focus of the comments. Oh, and don’t say he’s bipolar because two different doctors said he’s not. There are multiple edits on this video, and I believe at the time, he was still claiming not to edit his videos, but I could be wrong about that last bit. Again, worth a watch or at least a review of the transcript on YouTube.
More concern and worry in the comments. Here’s one trying to get Stephen to understand that they’re not just being mean:
Stephen - I’m an autistic adult who also has ADHD. I also used to work in a mental health hospital as a ward supervisor and rehab worker.
Just because someone says they’ve been checked out for things doesn’t mean they have….. the whole trouble with manic episodes is that they convince you that you have done things that you haven’t done.
We are worried Stephen. We’re not being mean - we are deeply concerned from a place of genuine love and care. Just think, if we didn’t give a crap we wouldn’t even bother posting a comment.
You are NOT being judged. You are causing genuine concern and we want you to see a professional, for whatever it is that you have going on. You need them and you need your meds. You’ve stopped taking your meds (you said you wouldn’t!) you’re not eating, not sleeping, not thinking coherently, you’re ‘fine on your own’ - these are all huge red flags. You will hang on to the ‘positive’ moments because your brain doesn’t want you to believe you need help. It’s not about ‘presenting odd’ Stephen - you’re absolutely right, odd is great! But this isn’t just odd - this is truly concerning and be mindful that it is highly uncommon to get a whole bucket load of people on the internet all desperately trying to convey the same concerns. It is because something is happening!
Also be mindful Stephen - not ONE person has said you are nuts. None of the comments you’re referring to have said that at all. You have taken all those concerns and you have translated them to mean what you think people are saying - because that’s what your current state of mind would have you believe. Not in any time or place - if you weren’t unwell - would you refer to those comments as ‘bad comments’ or ‘hate comments’. One day you will look back on this and you will be gutted that you referred to all the people posting genuine concerns as ‘bad commenters’. It will break your heart.
BUT - here we still are. Because we’re so ‘bad’ that we just can’t stop telling you how concerned we are about you and how urgently we want you to not just talk about having seen people in the past, but right HERE and NOW - see a therapist.
Please Stephen. We’re not bad people and we’re not at all trying to knock your confidence - we are the ones who would be the first to lift you up. But we’re also seeing the reality of the situation. And we can’t not say anything, BECAUSE we care too much. ❤
#lauraclery #dramen
But remember, y’all. We’re all just haters.

2023.06.08 05:43 SwedeInCo A love story for a product.

Hope this helps someone! I’m a 52 year old that grew up with the European drug market, a lot more hardcore, a lot more serious and the lightest of them all was hashish.
I worked in the hospitality industry so lots of nose beer people, lots of stupid shit, I hadn’t really tried weed until a few years ago when it was a legal recreational thing here, I was standing in line but I really only did bong hits or most frequently a pipe, do my own extractions and gummies.
Would love to be able to make my own ripple, but isn’t flower fanatic?
But it has lots of rough harsh smoke, having all the glassware kinda becomes a show of its own, tried a few pens,‘oils and started reading tons of reviews, talked to a buddy at work that also grows and has more experience with presses and such while I’ve grown more of it, the flavors I get out of decent strains and some of the home grown stuff is absolutely astonishing flavor wise, is it a wiz kalifa rig, no it ain’t, but it is fast enough that I’m writing this while curling my toes and enjoying the terpene flavors in a kush, and I’ve been friends with management since Monday (when it arrived) as well as I’ve watched tennis and basketball with the wife and I have 26 stitches and 2 stainless steel plates in my right ankle along with 14 screws (torsion break with completed ankle rebuild), one week after surgery I’m off any prescription, and I’m tolerably mobile.
Thank you mighty+
:)

2023.06.08 04:48 Mission_Emergency_36 I am 32 years old, a full time RN-BSN student, live in Texas, and currently make ~$535 monthly.

BACKGROUND
Long story short I spent 8 years on the West Coast holding increasingly important positions in the energy industry, but I hated it with every fiber of my being. I started taking nursing prerequisite courses in January of 2020. Family trauma happened. I moved home to Texas to be closer to my family, quit my job (was making ~$130k with bonus), and took the plunge and went to back to school for nursing at 31. I am half way done with an accelerated BSN program and I have a 4.0 GPA. I love it so much despite it being very difficult. I have externship currently and I have an ICU internship lined up for my final semester, which is basically a guaranteed new grad job.
I currently live with my mom and brother. We are remodeling our house so we are in an apartment for a bit. Very tight quarters but thankful to be with them. Boyfriend just successfully made a big career move and is now a superintendent for an important and well respected organization in town making $60k annually with a 8% bonus. Very proud of him and very excited for our future - we are talking about getting engaged in the next year. He is getting an apartment in the next couple months after living at home with his family due to some major family health issues he has been helping out with so you will see some of the apartment search start to happen in this diary!
Currently boyfriend and I split going out expenses pretty much down the line, but with this new job we had a discussion last week about how he will pay for the majority of our going out costs moving forward once he gets his first paycheck this month until I start working full time again in January!
Previous money diary from August 2022 here.
ASSETS (comparing last money diary to now):

August 2022 June 2023 Difference
401k $156,400 $158,600 $2,200
Roth IRA $68,000 $68,500 (500)
Saving's account $41,001.43 $26,572.63 ($14,428.81)
Checking Account $3,024.58 $915.41 ($2,109)
HSA $8,800 $7,100 ($1,700)
Brokerage $440 $444 $4
UGMA $85,000 $84,000 ($1,000)
Pension forgot to include $27,000 N/A
NET WORTH: $373k
**I don’t carry any credit card debt / no student loan debt / no equity in any kind of home. I was lucky enough to be in a position where I saved up over $40k cash to pay for living expenses when in school. My UGMA account will be used as part of a down payment for a house in the next couple years. My current BSN degree is being covered through family. Also, trying to figure out what to do with my pension - depending how finances go the next 8 months I am in school / if I have any emergencies (I have 2 senior pets) I could cash part of it out or completely roll it over into an IRA.
INCOME
Income Progression: I worked in the energy industry for 8 years; my starting salary was $35,000.
I worked in the Seattle area starting out at $35k in 2014. Moved to a new job in 2016 for $65k and then another new job in 2018 for $85k +12% bonus. Got up to $104k + 20% bonus before I quit. Also worked as a CNA on the weekends for about 6 months for $15 an hour during COVID to make sure I really wanted to go to nursing school.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: It varies but the average so far this year it is $535. I have an incredibly flexible externship at a hospital very close to where I live where my director literally just lets me show up whenever I want to work. I make $17 an hour. I met a couple incredible mentors but I think I am going to quit soon since it just won’t be feasible to work this semester and I already have my ICU internship lined up for September. Trying to be easier on myself and put myself first and I feel very lucky that I don’t need to work. Don’t get me wrong the extra money is SO NICE but I want to concentrate on school, myself, family, partner, and friends. Work on top of an accelerated nursing program is too much. I am actually the only one working in my cohort currently.
Any Other Monthly Income Here: I live with my mom right now and she pays for most of the groceries, utilities, etc. I feel incredibly privileged and lucky that I can live with her and that she is able to support me in this way while I transition careers. I do lots for her to support her such as chores, errands, paying for big Costco runs, etc. My boyfriend also helps out with pet expenses and other things I want / need.
MONTHLY EXPENSES
I allocate the following to my biggest expense categories monthly:
WEDNESDAY - DAY 1
8:45: I slept 10 hours last night and it was glorious. I worked a 12 hour shift at the hospital yesterday and our patient acuity was very high.
9:30: Make a coffee and walk and feed my pup. I walk over to the pool for a morning swim. I love a quiet morning swim so much.
11:30: I had a nice 500 yd swim, drank a Premier Protein shake & ate overnight oats with blueberries for breakfast, had a relaxing shower, and started some laundry. Feeling anxious about everything I have on my plate currently. Also I feel hungover from work yesterday. I was going to work another 12 hour shift tomorrow but now I don’t know if I can handle it with school also starting on Friday and a very busy social weekend coming up. Luckily, my director literally lets me show up whenever I want so I may do 7 or 8 hours tomorrow instead of a full 12. Try to table my feelings to discuss in therapy this afternoon.
11:40: Sit down to finish some online orientation for my internship that is coming up my final semester.
13:03: Orientation stuff only took about 20 minutes thank god. I ran to the grocery store and grab a 4 pack of watermelon Celsius, frozen veggies, Eggo waffles, tea bags, string cheese, coffee filters, Wheat Thins, and lean ground beef ($37.01). Head up to the rooftop lounge at the apartment complex to FaceTime a friend that lives across the country since there is zero privacy in the apartment.
14:15: Get off FaceTime, work on some more laundry, and head out to therapy.
16:15: Good, productive, fun, and validating therapy session and I make it over to my friend’s condo to check on her kitties. I had set up a reoccurring biweekly therapy appointment now that I know my school schedule for the upcoming semester too. We talked about money fixation and anxiety and trying to let that go. We agree that I should sleep in a bit tomorrow, walk my dog, go for a swim, and then go to work. I don’t ~need~ the money so working 12 hours vs 7 or 8 is not an issue. My mental health is more important. Also the work hangover from yesterday is real.
17:00: Boyfriend comes over after work and jumps in the shower while I’m a couch potato (Disclaimer: he’s friends with my friend too and she’s 100% comfortable with him hanging out too.) We relax and hang with the kitties and catch up on our days.
18:45: We head to dinner. We grab burritos at one of our favorite local spots and I pay ($25.88). We look at houses for fun on Zillow and discuss what apartments we want to tour in the next couple weeks.
20:00: I make it home and have a long talk with my mom about her friend who ended up in the hospital today with a compound fracture. Long story short I’ll need to stay up until midnight to hand off the house keys, garage door opener, etc. to a friend who is driving into town that can take care of her dog. Her dog is a pit bull that is vicious to strangers so no one else can go over to the house other than this friend who pet sits and knows the dog.
23:30: The friend makes it and we hand him the keys and everything he needs. I had spent the evening tidying up and meal prepping and looking at more apartments. It’s amazing to me how much time goes into keeping a clean and tidy home.
12:08: I spent a half hour setting up my June budget and then pass out.
TOTAL: $62.89
THURSDAY - DAY 2
9:05: I finally wake up to a bunch of texts from multiple different friends / friend groups. Ugh. I’m just feeling really anxious about school starting tomorrow, my mom being very distraught over her colleague / friend, working today, and a busy weekend coming up. I make some coffee and walk my pup.
9:33: I call my mom while feeding my pup breakfast and tell her how I’m feeling and we both agreed I ran around too much last semester and I told her I am setting firm boundaries with myself to basically not do anything social during the school week once clinical start (Monday - Thursday) unless it’s like a super casual dinner and I truly have the capacity for it. I burned myself out at the end of last semester and spent weeks putting the pieces back together.
9:55: I make another cup of coffee and take myself for a morning swim. It brings me so much joy and grounds me. I swim 500 yards and then jump into the shower, throw my scrubs on, kiss my pup goodbye and head to the hospital. I drink a chocolate Primer Protein shake and call my friend L on the way to hear how her trip has been going so far. It was nice to catch up even though we saw each other over the weekend lol.
10:54: Ate my overnight oats made with half and half and some blueberries, clocked in, and headed out to the floor. Immediately get asked to be a sitter which literally never happens. Thank you universe. Feeling a little less anxious now that I’m here and feeling thankful for the little bit of extra money I’m making and being here for my community.
14:04: Maybe not thank you universe - the patient slept for a while then got extremely combative and was trying to punch me. I switch off with a coworker and head to the break room to eat a bowl I made with frozen veggies + rotisserie chicken from Costco + cheddar cheese on top.
19:09: I finally clock out. I had a snack of 2 rice cakes and some almonds at one point. Rest of work was wild (i.e. a psychotic patient that pulled out his IV and was throwing things everywhere, someone screaming in pain for hours nonstop, etc.) and had me questioning what I am doing making this career change. I am tired.
19:49: I make it home after swinging by L’s to check on her kitties. Jump in the shower. My mom has dinner ready and I scarf down this gorgeous basil, mozzarella, peppers, tomatoes, avocados, and olive salad + a couple Trader Joe’s dolmas + a couple pieces of fresh bread. Delicious. I force myself to get my food and my school bag ready for tomorrow and lay my scrubs out before I crawl into bed a little after 9.
TOTAL: $0
FRIDAY - DAY 3
06:22: Alarm goes off and I roll out of bed and take my pup for a nice walk. Give him breakfast / shower / throw on my scrubs / pack my lunch / give the pup a big kiss goodbye and I am out the door a little after 7:00.
07:47: I get to school and I am NOT feeling it lol. I stopped at Costco for gas on my way ($20.67) and I also swung by a very Texas niche store that sells all kinds of beef jerky my brother really likes to grab some for his birthday coming up ($17.98).
10:00: Class is boring - it’s tough getting back into it with an 8 hour cardiac lecture. It’s good to see my friends but struggle is real. I run into my favorite professor and she makes my morning. I tell her all about my upcoming internship and my boyfriend’s new job and she was stoked and told me to “lock him down” hahaha. I also make 2 phone calls to apartment complexes we are interested in cause my boyfriend doesn’t get great reception at work during business hours. One place doesn’t have any current availability but the lady was so nice and will be sending me a virtual tour later today. Schedule another tour on Monday afternoon.
11:30: We break for lunch and I eat the same thing as yesterday - rotisserie chicken + frozen veggies + cheddar cheese.
12:30: Spend the afternoon in class completely unable to concentrate. The professor is throwing ECG rhythms around left and right. 8 hours of ECG lecture is NOT a productive way to learn the material. I work on a couple study guides during class cause I cannot.
3:30: We get out a little early and I rush to meet my mom for a walk through of the house. I follow her back to her office because I sent a big Chewy order there. Pick up the box along with a Diet Coke, order us Cava for dinner, pick up Cava, check on my friends cats on my way home real quick, and then have a shower and relax. Mom pays for Cava and I thank her multiple times.
7:00: We eat dinner all together when everyone is eventually home (harissa avocado bowl for me!) and then my boyfriend calls right when I head out to walk my dog. Perfect. I miss him and have been having anxiety around our new schedules. We have a good 30 minute chat about our days before I spend the evening basically doing nothing. I chat with my family and mess around on my phone. Text boyfriend about different apartments.
22:44: Bed time after I brush and floss my teeth. I’m zonked from the week.
TOTAL: $38.65
SATURDAY - DAY 4
08:30: I’m awake! Did not sleep well at all cause thunderstorms. My pup is deathly afraid and will not stop shaking for hours so I end up sleeping on the couch on and off. We were up and down all night but somehow I feel okay. We go for a quick walk, feed him, and start a load of whites in the washer.
09:08: I have a shower, and then I head out to get my family coffee from one of our favorite spots.
10:45: Make it back home with 2 cold brews for my brother and I and a latte for mom. I also picked up 5 breakfast tacos and a German chocolate cake for Sunday dinner tomorrow ($56.24). I eat a bean and cheese taco and a potato and egg taco, start some laundry, and put air in my tires with my home compressor since my low air light has been on in my car for an embarrassing amount of time. Brother needs air in his tires too so turns into a production lol.
12:18: Spent a couple hours putzing around dealing with the tires and more laundry and packing a bag for tonight. We are headed to the lake for a friend’s bday party and I have no clue what I want to wear so I pack a lot of options and clothes for church tomorrow morning too. Now it’s time to drive around for a little bit and check out some potential apartments and do a small Target run.
14:02: I make it home from apartment cruising and my Target run. I bought a 3 subject notebook, tire pressure gauge with valve caps included, two bags of frozen veggies, mini coke zeros, and a bag of Lesser Evil popcorn ($21.50). I was so tempted to stop for lunch on my way home but lines were long everywhere so I made myself some cheesy eggs + 2 Eggo waffles when I got home. Put the valve cap on my tire that is missing one.
14:36: Make it to L’s condo and clean up after the cats and start the Roomba. Boyfriend texts that he is out of work and on his way over! He’s been up since 4 am this morning for work and I am feeling some type of way with everything on my plate / anxiety so we will see how long we make it tonight lol.
15:30: S is showered and we are out the door!
16:30: We make it to the rental, change into our bathing suits, and walk down to the river.
19:00: We hang out in the river for a good 2.5 hours. It was a good time - nice to chat with my school friends and their partners. Boyfriend and I head out before the real partying starts lol.
20:00: We eat dinner at this cute Tex Mex place. Boyfriend has some kind of alcoholic mixed drink and we share a fajita for 2 plate. Boyfriend pays - it was $70.56 with tip. I drive us back because he does not like to drive even after one drink which I am 100% here for. We are so tired lol.
21:15: Make it back to L’s condo and we take a hot shower and get into bed in the guest bedroom. It takes forever for us to both fall asleep.
TOTAL: $77.74
SUNDAY - DAY 5
6:50: Oh boy neither of us slept well. There was another thunderstorm. One of the cats was yowling nonstop outside our door. The ceiling fan was clanking on and off. The bed was way too soft. Up and down again all night for a second night in a row for me lol.
8:11: I’m showered and we are both dressed and we head out to one of our favorite taquerias for breakfast. I get 2 bean and cheese tacos and one machacado + egg taco. Boyfriend also gets 3 tacos and we both get coffee. We sit and chat for a while until it was time to go to church. I pay on the way out ($22.98 with tip).
11:40: After an hour of church and an hour meeting for a committee I’m on - I’m wiped out. Still have a house walk through to do with my family and boyfriend so I head over there and we are there for about an hour.
13:10: Finally made it home, walked my pup, and made myself a late lunch of Dave’s Killer bread toast + peanut butter + banana.
13:54: A girlfriend calls and asks if I want to get a pedicure this afternoon. We decide to get dinner together on Thursday instead. I’m actually very touched she called me because we are friends through another friend and normally don’t get together just the two of us. I’m really happy she reached out. I also invite one of my friends from school - I have been wanting them to meet for a while.
14:30: Nap timeeeee! I knock out for an hour then realize how thirsty I am and how badly I need to get out of the apartment. I get up, take the pup for a spin with my brother, and head to Sonic to get a large diet cherry limeade and then head to L’s condo to check on the kitties and chill ($3.34).
18:00: I spent a couple hours chilling on the internet - working on my google calendar, school organization, church emails, reviewing some apartments we may drive by tomorrow, and I download the remaining episodes of season 1 of Nurse Jackie to watch tonight. I had bought the complete first season over a month ago and still haven’t watched it all lol. That’s how little I watch tv.
20:00: We had bibimbap for dinner and German chocolate cake for dessert. Delicious. I clean up the dishes and do more laundry because that’s my life between school, work, working out, having 2 hairy pets, etc. Unpack my bags from the river day and sleepover last night too. Chat with my family.
22:00: Crawl into bed and watch some Nurse Jackie before passing out.
TOTAL: $26.32
MONDAY - DAY 6
7:33: I slept better but still tossed and turned. Still just anxious with everything going on, especially the start of another intense semester.
8:47: Pup is fed and walked. I open the windows because it is 68 degrees which is unheard of in June in south Texas.
10:06: I ended up doing a deep clean of my room hahah. Wiped down and vacuumed every surface. So much hair. My pup is shedding so bad. I change my bedding and toss my comforter in the wash. Thank goodness I have 2 sets of sheets now. I had only 1 for the longest time lol. I take a break and eat some Greek yogurt + pecans + banana + drizzle of honey.
11:03: I vacuumed the common areas in the apartment, took a long shower, and I’m dressed and ready for my boyfriend to pick me up. I felt like being cute today so I put on this new leather skirt from Alice + Olivia my boyfriend got me as a present that I haven’t worn yet + a white crop top + my cheetah old skool Vans. I’m so tired though lololol. This is one of the only Mondays we both have off for the foreseeable future so I am gonna rally and make the most of it!
11:15: Boyfriend is so tired too bahah. We go grab coffees at this cute little coffee shop I’ve been wanting to check out. I get a cortado. Boyfriend gets an iced caramel almond milk latte and I treat ($11.82 with tip). We sit and chill and map out what apartments we want to check out today.
12:30: Walk across the street to grab Tex Mex for lunch at a pretty famous place in town. I get the enchilada plate and boyfriend gets a chicken quesadilla plate. He pays and it is $27.89 with tip.
1:30: Go for our first apartment tour of the day and it is depressing. We drive around and check out the other apartments we are I interested in and then go on one more tour at a place that we are really impressed by. It’s $1.3k or so for a 500 sq ft one bedroom and that’s a stretch. Ideally he wants the base rent to be $1,000 or less which is quite doable. Yet again - south Texas prices for the win. He is looking at older buildings, but they are well kept up and in good neighborhoods. They are not in the hottest places to be in town, but definitely still nice.
16:00: We go back to L’s condo and chill and take care of the kitties. Discuss the apartments and ask my brother if he wants to get dinner with us and he agrees.
18:00: We head back to my apartment, pick up my brother, and head to dinner. We order a large caesar salad, an arugula and sausage pizza, and a mushroom and pepperoni pizza. This spot does $10 two topping pizzas on Monday and it slaps. I treat my boyfriend and brother to dinner ($48.01 with tip).
20:00: Home and boyfriend walks my pup with me. Brother makes us both tea and we have a nice cup of tea and chat until boyfriend heads home. I put together my breakfast and lunch tomorrow and then lay down to chill and have some quiet time.
22:30: Bed time! First day of critical care didactic is tomorrow and I am feeling mostly excited.
TOTAL: $59.82
TUESDAY - DAY 7
6:22: My alarm goes off and wakes me from a deep sleep. I finally slept a good 8 hours though!
7:10: I am showered and throw on some black Lululemon Align leggings and a swiftly tech tee. I was gonna wear real pants but screw that haha. I am really dragging this morning.
7:50: Make it to school and lecture starts at 8. Honestly - that lecture could have been given in 45 minutes but we spent the first 2 hours simply going over the schedule and clarifying assignments since everything is such a disorganized hot mess at the beginning of the semester.
10:05: We take a break and call a fellow church congregation member to see if we want to meet today to tour an organization that supports people immigrating. We are debating if we want to allocate church donation funds to them. We agree to meet at the location at 1:30.
12:41: We are done with class and I stayed a bit after to start making my study guide for our first test even though it isn’t for 5 weeks. I realize the time and quickly pack up and go heat up my lunch. Chat with an MSN student who I had met in orientation for my internship a couple weeks ago and he expressed his frustration about how the start of this semester is rough for him too.
2:38: We finish our tour and we are very impressed at the clean and organized operation. We agree to each write our own follow up email to the rest of the group before the end of the day supplying the church donating.
3:30: I make some jasmine tea and have some quiet time when I get home before starting on some dosage calculation problems that are due on Friday.
5:45: I end up spending almost 2.5 hours on homework - dosage calculations, an article summary, and start on a medication sheet. Ouch. I lay down for 20 minutes, take my pup out, and then head out to meet my friend for dinner at Cava.
6:30: I get the lemon chicken bowl and pita chips ($13.69) and we sit and chat for a 1.5 hours. We just saw each other a couple weeks ago, but so much to catch up on.
20:00: We agree to go on a double date in the next couple weeks and I head home. I walk my pup with my mom and brother, pack my gym bag and my food for tomorrow, write my follow up emails from today’s visit to the church committee, and relax in bed.
TOTAL: $13.69
TALLY OF DAILY EXPENSES:
TOTAL EXPENSES: $279.11
REFLECTION
I spent quite a bit on going out to eat this week with my boyfriend, family, and friends. It was the end of my school break and boyfriend is transitioning to a new job so we were a bit out of whack with spending on food. Usually we eat at home with our families more, but it was nice to go out and enjoy ourselves too. It was a super busy week for me too - which is the norm lately. I have a great community and social life here compared to the West Coast and I do not take that for granted. Trying to make myself more of a priority so I don’t burn out again, which is difficult for me.

2023.06.08 02:56 flynwhtesausage PNW ski buying help

I am looking to replace my best to shit 2014 Atomic Vantage Rivals. I have the 165 / 122-83-106 / 14/15
Aside from falling apart, here is what I don't like about them:
They struggle in the pnw concrete (most of what I ski), specifically later in the day. Even freshly waxed, it can feel like hitting a wall when you hit a bad spot of snow at the end of the day.
They chatter when I go even semi fast, and get really unstable when I push it. Fast for me has been 50-60mph. Most of the time I am in the 30s and at this speed they chatter noticeably.
They suck ass in powder, maybe it's me, but turning in anything deeper than 3 inches feels impossible.
My stats and what I Ski:
5'9 150lbs
I would say I am intermediate/advanced??
I ski Mt Hood Meadows 7-10 times a year, Timberline twice and Bachelor 1-2. I ski most blues with my fam and then do some blacks solo or with friends. Did my first Heather Canyon run this year and loved it.
85% groomers
15% trees (would like to do a tad bit more here maybe 20-25)
What I am thinking (bare with me I'm fucking lost):
My budget is 600 with bindings. I have boots that have been fit before it gets asked.
Volkl Blaze 86: not much info on these out there but everything I have read sounds great. I really worry about how they would perform in the pnw concrete with how light they are.
Salomon QST 92: just out of my budget. Could hold out and hope for them to drop within range.
I have no idea from here. I was primarily looking at 88-92 width but everything I read says 96, really 100+, for pnw daily drivers. I don't know if I would have issues on wide skis or not.
For length I am thinking 172-176 range?
Appreciate any guidance on this.

POV: Commander

The beach day seemed to be some sort of tipping point. Somehow it had convinced Ouer that we could be trusted and we would help her people.
She shared that the "sand" in the sandpits they used for sleeping was just ground scrap. Just think about sleeping on top of a garbage pile! Sharp garbage to boot.
Mateo had his surgery after I had mentally strong-armed him a bit. Milko promised to be by his bed as soon as it was completed.
I also promised that if the surgery went haywire Milko would be let in to use her Coltavalke Voice and Light. The endorsement of the HOTCHI Station's very own Dr. Anna Dilmurat helped a lot. Thankfully that wasn't needed. The surgery went well.
Mateo had to wear a colostomy bag for two days just to give his intestines time to heal. He hated it and was embarrassed by it. He thought everybody would know why he needed one. In my opinion he wasn't the one who should feel embarrassed at all but I understood his feelings all the same.
My xo Marcus told Mateo that he once had one for a week after a shrapnel injury. He also reminded Mateo that he came with a military vessel and many people saw him in a partial uniform during the alarm. I think that helped him immensely.
But this also meant that Mateo and Milko were both unavailable when Ouer wanted to have another discussion. Thankfully he had found a new lawyer. He had had a selection of three to choose one. Standard procedure after a mismatch.
The new guy was called Asbjørn Oppegard. He wore a suit that looked a lot like a pilot uniform. He had a loud voice, a ready smile, and a roaring laughter. He had talked with Ouer for quite some time, which was a good sign.
Saša: Are you comfortable talking with us, Ouer?
Ouer: Yes, I am
Saša: If you feel like you have to talk to us because we have been nice to you...
Ouer: It's not that!
Saša: Good. Because we would continue being nice to you as long as you need us, whether you tell us anything or not.
Commander: That's right. We would always help a child - or young person - in need of help. We have laws to say that but most people have an inner need to do so even without the laws.
Mr. Oppegard: True. We also give aid to all civilians whenever possible.
Commander: Even to enemy combatants if you have advanced past them because they are then your responsibility.
Ouer: That's amazing. If our defenders had rules like that, maybe they wouldn't have gone all blood-crazy.
Commander: Possible. Or at least it would have been confined to a few extremists.
Mr. Oppegard: Ouer of the House Ioianda has a proposition to present.
I suddenly had to sit up straighter. House? Is the kid Eoan royalty?
Mr. Oppegard: While the so-called "Defenders" were called Eoans, the civilians were called Ioans. And they were ruled by the House Ioianda. They continued to lead the exiled Ioans. Eoan's mother was the Shoal Bearer Regnant. After the murder of her mother, Ouer is now the monarch of the Ioans. Since she is underage, four chosen advisers are going to help her.
Commander: So what happens now? Obviously, she needs to get back to her people but she doesn't feel comfortable letting us know how to contact them.
Ouer: I have reassessed the situation. I would like us to contact my people. Do you think your government would be amenable to a collaboration with mine? I understand if the Eoans have soured any possible affiliation.
Commander: What sort of cooperation did you have in mind?
Ouer: My parents were scouting anything and anyone who could help our people. The Ioans are suffering. The immature brat that I am I snuck in their spacecraft. After hiding my entire life I just wanted to see something, anything different.
Saša: So the current monarch and the next in line were both conveniently onboard the same spaceship.
Ouer lowered her head in shame. She was almost in tears.
Ouer: To my defense, my little brother was left home. Though there hasn't been a male Shoal Bearer Regnant in centuries. Also, he is only two years old. Factions would have formed. Different groups would have had different ideas on how to save our people. Power-hungry individuals would have tried to cozy up to my brother. A civil war could have been the result.
Saša: Well, it seems you now understand the consequences of your actions. I'd say you had to grow up a lot in a very short time. You now feel the weight of your responsibilities. I don't think you'd do a similar mistake in the future.
Commander: Don't beat yourself up too much over what is now in the past. Your parents' faith would have been the same regardless. You didn't cause it in any way. Let's concentrate on the future. Did the Eoans know who you were?
My words seemed to resonate with her. I hadn't noticed before but her posture was constantly a little stiff. I noticed now because she visibly relaxed. Poor kid, feeling she caused her parents to be murdered. Kids of all ages always blamed themselves and an outsider pointing out the obvious often helped.
Ouer: The monarch is marked visibly, so they knew who my parents were. My father saw me and quickly treated me as a servant. He even slapped me. The Eoans laughed. I am sure they didn't understand who I was.
Saša: Thank the void for small mercies!
Commander: However, they knew they slew the monarch. Did they communicate with anyone after that?
Ouer: No. They tried to use our communicators but they were broken for a reason.
Commander: For a reason?
Ouer: When my parents realized we lost and the Eoans were boarding, they destroyed them as per protocol. The Eoans got really mad since theirs were not working either. They dragged us all into their craft. And then they murdered my father. And my mother after some additional taunting. They added me to their food pantry with the humans.
Saša: So they are cannibals as well. Oh, it means eating their own kind.
Mr. Oppegard: So going back to legalities here. I hope this show of good faith is reciprocated. Is Ouer Ioianda in any legal trouble? Is she a POW? What is her status?
Commander: Oh, no. Ouer Ioianda is not detained or suspected of any wrongdoing. We only needed to understand what happened.
Mr. Oppegard: So the lawyers and guardians and the rule not to go to the public places were all...
Saša: For Ouer's protection.
Ouer gave her lawyer some silent message. And they began to tell us how to communicate with her people. Despite the inherent risk in letting her be the first to speak to them, we agreed it was a necessary risk.
I contacted the Terran Command and the presidential bureau. As expected we got the green light. Finding allies was of foremost importance before the BBB -or PACA - made their next big move. Deathworld allies were naturally most important since a war of armed conflict was in all probability in our future.
I also relegated my concerns related to the PACA-controlled syllabi in our institutions of higher education. I was afraid vulnerable students might get brainwashed by the propaganda. If our brightest scientific minds were taught to rely on "saintly, benign, just, and fair" PACA in everything, we would be a divided people when attacked.
These were, after all, PACA-mandated changes to our education sector, and we could be quite sure they weren't benevolent in nature. All we needed was for our young to blindly trust in PACA!
I was aware that this was a slippery slope. All oppressive regimes started by making groups of people - learned people most often - seem suspicious and the root of all the problems. I didn't want a witch hunt of our young academia.
But it was true that resistance movements to tyranny also start by assigning suspiciousness to the ruling party. I shared this dichotomy with Terran Command and the presidential bureau. I felt history would blame us for whatever we chose to do.
I shook off these gloomy ponderings and stopped Saša and Ouer outside the room to share some news with them.
Commander: Ouer, you asked us to let you know how the two humans you saved were doing.
Ouer: Oh, yes!
Commander: They agreed to let you know the surgery went well and the girl is on the mend. The woman is doing well too.
Ouer: That is such a relief!
Commander: They have suffered great trauma. They are receiving care from mental health specialists. They are immensely grateful to you for saving them. Unfortunately, they don't wish to have further contact with you.
Ouer: I see. I suspected that might be the case.
Commander: Please don't take that as an insult. This is all just so overwhelming for them. They have nothing against you personally. I'm sorry, Ouer.
Ouer: It's fine.
I could clearly see she wasn't remotely fine. I felt sorry for her. While I understood their decision I knew several people who would have at least mustered a thank you note.
Commander: However, Mateo's surgery went well. He is tired but would very much like to see you. He insisted to be moved to a room where you can visit him easily.
Ouer: Really?
Commander: Yes, really. Just let Saša know when you wish to...
Ouer: Now! Can I go now?
The giant cone mollusk was all but levitating in joy and excitement. She didn't look monstrous at all at that moment. Somehow knowing she represented a different subspecies allowed me to see the differences. Her cone was a little different: her coloration was shinier and faintly blue, and while Eoans' cone twisted widdershins, Ioans' twisted deiseal.
Commander: Saša is that okay with you?
Saša: Totally.
We took the omnidirectional hover-lift right next to Mateo's hospital room. It was a delight to see the young people talking joyously. My kids were flabbergasted to know Ouer was not only royalty but the current ruler of her people. In the end, though it didn't make much difference to them.
It took five days for the newly minted Ioan-Terran cooperation task force to arrive at the HOTCHI Station. And they arrived in style. The entourage encompassed several spacecrafts but the jewel was a small Virginia Hall -class carrier.
When I said a "small carrier", I meant small to Terrans. We have always liked big things. But Virginia Hall -class was so much more.
It was painted with the same special void black paint as my Bolt, and equipped with enormous, heavily shielded, phase change material heat sinks. The heat energy is used for the phase change and can be later used for warming the ship as well as in a power failure situation. Or radiated into the cold space. But that would be visible - to all but the weakest of sensors - and could just as well paint a bull's eye on the carrier for the enemy.
All the water onboard was also conveniently an excellent heat sink and cosmic radiation shield.
Despite being a big frecking carrier the vessel could stay practically invisible for weeks before it had to dump the heat sinks and botron out of there to avoid detection. That's why the class was called Virginia Hall.
She was the first spy for a nation that was a superpower on Earth for a long time. She actually was first a spy for another powerful nation in the same war.
She served behind enemy lines and was betrayed and hunted. I mean, I'm sure it was pretty hard hiding with that prosthetic leg of hers (a hunting accident before she was a spy). At that time in history, prosthetic limbs were heavy, wooden, and cumbersome. This tough woman called hers "Cuthbert".
The enemy harried her, calling her "the most dangerous of all Allied spies" and "the lady who limps". She escaped over the snow-capped Pyrenees mountains. With Cuthbert.
When the nation he spied for didn't let her go back, she went back as a spy for the other (allied) nation. There was no stopping her! She had some sisu !
She led several thousand resistance fighters, masterminded jailbreaks for agents, rescued downed pilots, and a lot more. We don't even know the rest. When asked decades later she said: "Many of my friends were killed for talking too much."
This particular Virginia Hall class carrier was retrofitted for Ioan habitation. As it happened it was originally being built as an aquatic zoo but abandoned due to a cancellation of the order. Luckily for us, it had most of the water hardware and features halfway fitted.
The crew rooms were larger and equipped with sandpits with actual, fine-grain sand from Mars excavation sites, lightly salted, clean water, heating, and on-site sanitation. Each room also had a large aquarium with fish and water plants the Ioans ate. The ship had enormous fish farms and seaweed forests as renewable food source.
Were Terran crafts have their park, this craft had a shore and water area like the one where Ouer, Caleo, Mateo, and Milko had their beach day here at the HOTCHI Station. Except this one was colossal, again with fish and water plants.
For a functioning coastal marine ecosystem working conveniently also as a carbon sink and purifying water by filtering pollutants, seagrass meadows and algae, kelp, sea urchins and sea horses, small invertebrates, mallards, swans, and many more were added.
Some wisecrack had even added seagulls, those marauders with no moral compass. The Ioans themselves are filling in the marine predator locus together with the sea birds and predatory fish.
Parallel to corridors the most used passageways had also transparent water tubes for traveling. The chairs on the bridge, in the cafeteria, and in other places for staying for a duration had osmotic chairs like the omnidirectional lift. Since the retrofit was for long-term habitation the lighting in the craft was to follow their home planet's day-night cycle.
It also was a carrier, so it had a few smaller spaceships like mining vehicles, shuttles, and escape pods. The carrier was large enough to be classified as a space station (not by accident; Terra was only allowed a very modest number of military vehicles by PACA but the amount of small space stations was less limited).
It had modest defense weaponry and a sophisticated sensor array. Nothing compared to what our military had but above average when compared to what most other species had.
This first retrofitted carrier was a gift from Terra. It was to make negotiations easier. Also, the Ioans were to evaluate it and give us valuable feedback. In addition to acquiring an allied species, we were hoping for a jump start for our ship-building economy, aquatic division.
Ouer christened the spaceship The Uara, after her mother. We had a small launching ceremony before setting off for the rendezvous coordinates. The Bolt was temporarily reassigned for escort duty. My xo Marcus was to captain The Uara with a temporary skeleton crew granted by the president's office and provided by the Terran Command.
Ouer, Mateo, and Milko requested to travel onboard The Uara. I would have granted it in any case, but the Terran Command specifically assigned Mateo and Milko there as important to the success of the Ioan alliance mission. Ouer had declared Caleo as a royal ward, so he completed the entourage.

POV: Marcus

After just one day of travel, a bright red warning appeared on the main screen in the command deck hidden deep inside the carrier. Klaxons blared and an automated voice told the crew and the civilians what to do.
Automated voice (in Eoan/Ioan and New English): Battle Stations! Battle Stations! Enemy contact! Crew for battle stations!
Automated voice (in Eoan/Ioan and New English): Shelter! shelter! Enemy contact. Civilians to Shelter!
The few civilians scurried into the insanely heavily shielded shelter in a speedy fashion. The ship systems automatically went to FN mode ("Fade to Nothing", our stealth mode).
Historical Earth submarines are the closest analog to the FN, except to stay undetected, instead of not making a sound we needed to not reflect light or emit infrared energy from radiating heat. The void paint and shielded heat sinks cover those. When getting closer or sending probes, there are visual sensors. Void paint is pretty good there too unless the other party knows what they are looking for and the rough area where to look.
Bolt as a military commando vessel had also NT-mode ("Not There"), where she essentially visually shows what is on the other side of herself. This way she doesn't create any area empty of what should be there.
That said, not all our escorts had similar stealth capabilities. Our ship's sensors detected not one but three Eoan ships.
The thing with Eoan ships is that they very seldom travel in packs. The last time was the attack on the HOTCHI Station with three ships each carrying five Eoans. And before that...must have been before we met the monsters. Three of them now sniffing the space relatively near the HOTCHI Station like a pack of hungry sharks was cause for concern.
¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆¥∆
  1. botron = "skedaddle" in New English, from Vietnamese bỏ trốn (run away)
  2. sisu = determination regardless of cost, persistent obstinacy, willful stubbornness in New English, from Finnish

2023.06.08 01:30 iquotestats Unglamorous OE

A little about me; 20s F, in the nonprofit/ public health field, MPH student, I just started my first big girl job(s) 3 weeks ago.
J1 - Main full time J that I'm actually passionate about (I know that's a no no in these streets) because I believe in the mission. Position involves writing proposals for funding, networking with bigger organizations to partner with, at least 1-2 meetings a day, fully remote
J2 - Part time contract position doing literature reviews and summaries for a hospital's public health division. I meet with the rest of the team once a week and otherwise I'm left to my own devices
J3 - Did this for 2 weeks then quit because it's one of those huge companies where you have to be on zoom all day. I was only able to get away with it because the first 2 weeks were training
Some days have been overwhelming trying to meet deadlines AND do my school work but I've managed to remain afloat. My J2 contract probably ends in September by which point I hope to have something else lined up
I know my experience isn't as glamorous as everything else posted on here. I'm not in tech and I don't even know if I qualify as OE considering one of the Js is part-time. But I still wanted to share since there's few other people in my personal life I can tell

3 months later, here's my Coco Moon review & ratings...

Favorite songs: “Sons of Thunder” & “The Tornado” Least favorite songs: “Field Notes” & “Adam, Check Please” Overall rating: 2.4/5 stars
I’ve known for a while that old-style Owl City music I originally fell in love with is long gone, but I had hoped that whatever route he took for his new album would be just as captivating. Unfortunately, Coco Moon is a sharp turn in a direction I don’t think I’ll be following. While a few songs on the album are fun, standout surprises, they’re the exception by far.
The biggest disappointment in nearly all the songs is the songwriting. I fell in love with Owl City’s music because of the unique and dreamy lyrics, and many of Adam’s songs in recent years have been missing that quality entirely. Coco Moon especially suffers from awkwardly phrased, clunky lyrics filled with cliches, morals, and over-explained messages; there’s not a single song on the album that avoids it.
One of the other major issues that many songs on this album suffer from is undeservedly long runtimes. This album definitely could’ve used some input from another songwriter to help prevent that issue; I think many songs could be greatly improved simply by cutting a few verses and/or choruses here and there.
Something that I noticed but don’t have particularly strong feelings on is the wide variety in tone and topic between the songs on the album. While a lot of the time artists and/or management prefer keeping an album thematically consistent, I personally don’t mind having a wider variety — although I will admit that many of the transition between songs can be incredibly jarring.
Overall, Coco Moon is an album that feels like it’s constantly missing the mark. I won’t be re-listening to most of the songs off of it, but at the end of the day, I’m happy that Adam is making the music that he wants to and continuing to grow and evolve his style.
(Individual song reviews below! Favorite/least favorite lyrics spoiler-ed so you can ignore them if you want; I just included them for fun.)

Adam, Check Please

⭐⚫⚫⚫⚫ (1/5 stars)
The instrumentals are super fun, but I just can’t get over the lyrics. They’re super-literal, awkward, and clunky — and weirdly glorifying underpaid retail work. It feels like Adam’s trying to make a connection between his grocery store job and his music fame with the whole “climb the ladder” thing… Uh, no. Again, the music itself is really fun; the layering of instruments, synths, main vocals, backing vocals, etc. works really well. But in my opinion the lyrics are bad enough to make the song flop.
Worst lyric: all of it “I said, hey, I’m looking for Casey Connor / Here’s my resume”
Best lyric: “All those hours / And store-bought flowers set me free”

Under the Circus Lights

⭐⭐⚫⚫⚫ (2/5 stars)
Although I’m not personally a fan of this song, I can admit that Adam did a really fun and unique job blending pop style with musical/soundtrack style music in this song (and some others on the album). It veers a little too far into soundtrack at points for me to listen to it most of the time, though, especially with the announceapplause interlude. Again, the lyrics here are very cliche at times and overall leave something to be desired, but it’s not one of his worst offenders. The circus setting of the story just feels weird to me — it feels like Adam was trying to pick a whimsical setting for a romance (in the vein of “Super Honeymoon”/”The Yacht Club”) but it feels too grounded and misses that classic Owl City level of whimsy.
Worst lyrics: “I got cotton candy” / “She seemed to drown in the "oohs" and "ahhs"”
Best lyric: “Lighter than a feather / But careful as with a heavy heart / She seemed to fall forever”

Kelly Time

⭐⭐⭐⚫⚫ (3/5 stars)
Honestly, the fact that Mr. City decided to write a whole song about Cast Away from the point of view of the volleyball… There’s no word but iconic. It’s a bop, too, with super fun instrumentals and what feels like a genuinely fresh evolution of Owl City music. It’s so close to 4 stars for me, but it gets points off for a few things. One, awkward and often cliche lyrics throughout the song (I think in this case from trying to fit the lyrics to the movie dialogue at times). Two, for the fact that, like many songs on the album, it feels unnecessarily long — it keeps going several verses longer than it feels like it should. Three, connected to that, at times it goes overly hard trying to impart a moral into the song (one that’s not necessarily present in the original movie!). And four, it’s missing some of the whimsy I think Adam was going for, and ends up too grounded in its source material — even if it works for the song, but I prefer not to listen to movie summaries in the form of songs.
Worst lyric: “The most beautiful thing in the world / Is, of course, the gift of life” (He CHANGED IT — in the movie it’s “The most beautiful thing in the world is the world itself”.)
Best lyric: “And now I have to learn to let you go / Even though I love you more than you'll ever know / I'm getting used to half a heart and the way things are”

Field Notes

⭐⚫⚫⚫⚫ (1/5 stars)
Coming from someone who fell in love with Owl City’s music because of Adam’s songwriting… This is the worst songwriting I’ve ever seen from him. He wrote an overly literal song about one of the more obscure Christian fables, and topped it all off with an explanation that that was what he was doing in the song. Dude, ever heard of “show, don’t tell”? Also, I’ve read the fable and various explanations of it, and I think I understand what it’s trying to say, but I just don’t think the song communicates it well through the story. (Hence the need for the explanation at the end, I guess?) And I guess the music is alright… except for the minute-long instrumental solo at the end that feels like it’s a totally separate song. Overall, this whole song is just a mess.
Worst lyric: “It’s a fable, you see / And the moral is this”
Best lyric: (none)

Sons of Thunder

⭐⭐⭐⭐⚫ (4/5 stars)
Adam needs to do Christian rock more often! This song is a banger and probably my favorite song on the album. The music is incredible, and his vocals, plus the backing female vocals, work really well to give the song a sense of power. In terms of the theme — I’m not Christian myself, and tend to find Christian themes tiring in music. But the first part of this song was actually done really well, in my opinion. It’s only in the tail end of the song where it begins to get preachy that Adam starts to lose me. It’s another example of “show, don’t tell”; the song conveys its message perfectly well through the more symbolic first part of the song, but grinds the pace to a halt to unnecessarily lay it out plainly at the end. And as a final note — nimbusofghosts on Tumblr already made an excellent post about this, but as a queer + transgender person, there’s a few lines in the song that I really connect with.
Worst lyric: “Yeah, we serve a God / Who loves us to death / No matter what we've done / So don't lose hope / 'Cause he will lead us home”
Best lyric: “And even though we are strange and exquisitely scarred / We don’t need to pretend to be anything we aren’t”

The Tornado

⭐⭐⭐⭐⚫(4/5 stars)
WOW. It’s incredible to see such strong vocals from Adam, and the instrumentals really support them and the mood. You can really hear the influence of movie and musical scores in this song; the knowledge he gained from the Adam Young Scores project really shines here, even years later. This song really had the potential to be my favorite song on the album, but (like several other songs on the album) it really lost its momentum halfway through, which brings the song grinding to a halt. The energy and mood of the first half is totally absent in the second half. Once again, the length also does it no favors; I think this song could easily be improved by cutting several of the verses after the climax so it falls later in the song. And, once again, the preachy Christian overtones and explanation of the moral feel very heavy-handed to me.
Worst lyric: “No, I vowed I'd not be murdered by a monster in the sky that night / But if I went home to heaven, at least that's where I'd belong”
Best lyrics: “And then the nightmare started, it got deafeningly loud / Every fiber in me screamed out but I couldn't make a sound / . . . / And this was my prayer: / "Save me from this terrible nightmare"”

Vitamin Sea

⭐⭐⭐⚫⚫ (3/5 stars)
This song is pretty simple but fun. It’s a cheesy, pun-filled bop — solid, but never going to be in my top songs. This is probably the closest to Ocean Eyes that will ever happen, but I feel a little sad that it’s in the vein of “Dental Care” or “Rugs From Me To You” instead of some of the more beautiful, whimsical songs from that era. The cliche lyrics feel a little but less cliche because there are only so many puns out there, but among the many other cliche songs on the album it feels like just one more song filled with unoriginal phrases. Regardless, it’s a fun song with fun lyrics and fun instrumentals.
Worst lyric: “So heads up Nancy, don't get antsy / While I'm working on my tan”
Best lyrics: “Yeah, I gotta go now / 'Cause I'm a little worn down / And I'm a little burned out” / “I’ve gone coastal” (A pun on “going postal” — if you’re not familiar with the phrase, look it up. I do appreciate a bit of dark humor in Owl City songs.)

Dinosaur Park

⭐⭐⭐⚫⚫ (3/5 stars)
This song has so much potential, but falls flat for me in so many ways. The topic (dinosaur statues coming alive at night) and the music (chill, twinkly vibes) are both wonderful, and in some ways a return to a classic “dreamy” style. But the six-and-a-half minute runtime means that the singular topic and limited instrumentals are stretched out for far, far, far too long. By the time some more interesting instruments kick in midway to give the song a little more life, it’s already over three and a half minutes in. (For reference, “The Bird and the Worm” is just a little under three and a half minutes long.) It’s a fun, silly song, but not at all deserving of the gargantuan runtime.
Worst lyric: “Boy, I love Rapid City / And that hilltop of beasts”
Best lyric: “'Cause when the moon's sitting pretty / Above Rapid City / There's much more than meets the eye”

Learn How to Surf

⭐⭐⚫⚫⚫ (2/5 stars)
A fun, funky song, that is also incredibly baffling to me. It really just feels like Adam trying out some new synths with some quickly written cliche lyrics slapped on top. The verses and chorus, while both fun in their own ways, feel totally disconnected lyrically, like they belong to two different songs. Ironically, despite the fact that this song feels super short and insubstantial, it’s over three and a half minutes long, making it a pretty average song length for any of his older albums. I think it’s because this song suffers from the same issue many others on the album do, which is that so much of the song’s lyrics feel cliche, repeated, or like filler material. It’s a fun song but overall insubstantial; really nothing too interesting beyond the funky synths.
Worst lyric: “You can't stop the waves but you can learn how to surf” (A classic-to-the-point-of-cliche “inspirational” phrase… that he made the catchphrase and title of the song.)
Best lyric: (honestly, nothing stands out in particular)

The Meadow Lark

⭐⚫⚫⚫⚫ (1/5 stars)
Honestly, I keep forgetting this song exists. It doesn’t feel like it belongs on this album, much less that it was written by pop musician Owl City. While this might be an excellent song in a different context — An album of modern hymns, perhaps? Relaxing Christian moral music? — it’s jarring to hear it following “Learn How to Surf” on Coco Moon. Also, yet again, it tells its message perfectly fine through the story, but drags the end out by explaining it in the most literal terms possible, abruptly ending the narrative setting and tone of the song. (Also, as a sidenote, I do appreciate Adam’s shift in the language he uses to make it feel more like a hymn or otherwise traditional song!) But to sum up — in a different context, I’m sure this is a good song, but not on this album.
Worst lyric: “If I should live to see more days / I pray the Lord to guide my ways”
Best lyric: “And then, the curious thing occurred / On wings arrived a tiny bird / And troubled not by war or peace / She sang for us a melody”

My Muse

⭐⭐⭐⚫⚫ (3/5 stars)
What can I say, it’s a sweet song. It’s hard to critique a song as personal as this — it almost feels like it’s not meant for any of us to hear — but if there’s one thing I can point out, it’s the (once again) over-reliance on cliched language throughout the entire song, and some instances of awkward phrasing. I will say that this is one of the few songs on the album where it feels like just the right length (although ironically enough, it’s the shortest one on the album). It’s a simple, sweet, personal song, and even though I won’t be listening to it much, it’s one of those songs that just makes me happy for Adam.
Worst lyric: “Yeah, without a doubt, I took you out for coffee”
Best lyric: “There's nowhere else I'd rather be than here with you”

2023.06.08 01:15 Ok_Obligation_4751 So I ended up having both the D&C and exploratory in emergency surgery

Sorry, long post ahead.
Let me start off my saying, my doctor and my nurses? Angels. Heaven sent. My doctor literally yelled at pathology last night to get them to turn around and come back to work because he wanted to do an emergency D&C and needed them there at 9 at night to make sure it was a blighted ovum and not an ectopic. He won. And I was in rushed into what turned out to be double surgery just an hour and a half later. And my nurse? Hugged me over and over again. Literally refused to leave me with the OR team until she could say goodbye to me. These people are what all medical teams should be like. They advocated for me. They rooted for me and they took no short cuts. Summary ahead:
Last week when I was meant to be 8+4, they spotted what looked like a blighted ovum measuring 6+0. I went through all stages of grief in rapid succession.
Thursday: first US shows blighted ovum or ectopic. Blood work drawn. Numbers were high at 18,466.
Saturday: More bloodwork, more spotting and bleeding.
Monday: I woke up and was relieved to see that my bloodwork results online showed they were going down and this was indeed nearly over. Shortly after, I got a call from my original doctor telling me to run (not walk) to radiology at another location for a more detailed US because the numbers suggested a possible ectopic (18,000s). They were going down, but not fast enough and they should've never been that high to begin with if there is nothing in the gestational sac. At 2500 hcg you should almost always be able to see something in the sac. That means a possible pregnancy somewhere else in the body. So I got the US and it showed no signs of ectopic. She scheduled me for another US to confirm in a week and D&C could be scheduled then.
Tuesday (the next day, yall): She called me minutes after I ate (for the first time in days due to the stess) and tells me to go to the hospital emergency room because she again suspects an ectopic with my numbers and I would likely need a D&C that night to send the contents to pathology to help rule out ectopic. So I go. They do another US. They say they don't think it's ectopic. They talk about my options. They call my orginal doctor. A new doctor comes in, reviews everything, and goes HAM on the phone trying to get me in for an emergency D&C. He doesn't want me to go home even for the night. He says he's seens cases like mine and I that should immediately get a tested D&C and possibly exploratory. I was taken in for surgery an hour and a half later.
Pathology said they were "pretty sure" the D&C removed the product of conception, but my doctor said that wasn't good enough for him, and he wanted absolute certainty. So while I was still under, he did exploratory (2 tiny cameras are put through your belly button and side) and found that my tubes and ovaries were great. He was then satisfied that they did indeed remove the products of conception with the D&C and I woke up shortly after the surgery.
I have a very low pain tolerance, and I felt no pain. The most I felt was when they gave me a shot in my butt cheek after surgey. That bruised pretty quick. But the actual D&C and exploratory were pretty painless and I was released this morning.
Ladies, get a team that fights for you. That advocates for you. You should be impressed at the level your team cares for you, and if you're not, you're with the wrong one.

2023.06.07 23:09 Blley Chronic mouth and throat ulcers

My teen daughter is the UC patient. Since she was diagnosed about a year ago she has had chronic mouth and throat sores that never really go away. Even when she was in a very short clinical "remmision" she still had oral sores (I don't think she ever was in remission). A scope done while she was hospitalized with a severe flare showed she also had inflammation in her stomach. Her GI (a pediatric IBD specialist) insists she has colitis based on pathology results, but another doctor reviewed her medical file and thinks we should reconsider Crohn's as a diagnosis because of the upper GI symptoms. During her hospital stay many of the doctors kept referring to her as a Crohn's patient, even wrote it in her file. She is on Xeljanz. If it fails her current GI is pressing us to go ahead with surgery to remove her colon. I was wondering how common oral ulcers and upper GI issues are common with UC. From some reading I've done it says research has shown some results when Crohn's patients took Xeljanz, but not enough to be considered a treatment for Crohn's yet. I am worried she is on the wrong medication. Xeljanz helped reduce her lower GI symptoms, but not the upper GI symptoms. She also only stops bleeding while using steriod enemas. We are still waiting for her appointment for a second opinion (months out). Would greatly appreciate input how common are upper GI symptoms with UC???

2023.06.07 22:19 Niznack The Advent Home and a discussion of Adventist psychology

Advent Home
trigger warnings
rape, suicide, physical abuse, emotional abuse.
https://www.wvgazettemail.com/news/legal_affairs/more-former-students-sue-over-alleged-abuse-at-boarding-school/article_db70c152-c8db-5711-82dc-52e3d26303ab.html
chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/WEST-VIRGINIA.pdf
note: Several organizations share a name with the Advent Home. I am specifically referring to the now defunct group home near Calhoun, Tennessee.
We talk a lot today about trauma in a way I don't remember it being discussed even in the broader cultural consciousness when I was young. Mental health was just viewed differently. Adventists have always had a weird relationship with mental health, but I think rarely more strange and harmful than the ideas of Dr. Senior and the Advent home. Through most of this I will use fake names but as Dr. Senior's name is intrinsically and publicly tied to the school he is my one exception. Also, if any reading this had the misfortune of also attending the school, you will know we were told to call him Dr. B or Dr. Blondel but we are adults and his title was Dr. Senior.
I've wanted to write about this for some time and this will likely be a first draft of a larger discussion. Psychology isn't my field of expertise and I've never felt I found the right platform to talk about such a niche subject but finding the Ex Adventist sub and with more being said about mental health I at least feel qualified to discuss where I feel Adventism was used to twist psychology into something harmful by Dr. Senior.
Before I continue, I wasn't there for the worst of what was to happen nor did I receive the worst of what happened in my time there. I also cannot entirely claim innocence of some of the emotional bullying that was tolerated if not encouraged. I hope I have grown since then and have learned from mistakes I made when I was 13 and do believe I am largely innocent of the physical bullying and certainly the sexual assault.
First, I want to address the lawsuit. As I say, I wasn't there for most of this as by 2014 the Advent Home and Miracle Meadows seem to have become much more closely related, swapping students to hide them from law enforcement and deposition. The school closed around 2014 , the time a lawsuit was filed. More lawsuits have since been filed and the director of the sister school miracle meadows was imprisoned. I will link the lawsuit and articles above. As the events detailed in it represent a massive escalation from what was happening while I was there, but I do think the events described are merely the codification of the policies being unofficially implemented on a smaller scale in my time. In short it lays out regular forced sexual assault by students and staff, duct taping students in rooms for days if they were violent and forcing them to study the bible for days at a time as punishment. Thinking back, I can see how the deference to authority and refusal to treat mental health as anything other than a religious failing could lead to the behavior detailed in these allegations. To be clear I am linking the allegation and articles below though I wasn't part of any of these trials and don't know which charges exactly stuck.
Even though the school is closed and from what I can tell Dr. Senior is retired, I think there is a larger discussion to be had about how the Adventist Church handles mental health and firebrands. So, what was the Advent Home? The Advent Home was a young men's reform school begun by Dr. Blondel Senior in Calhoun, Tennessee. There isn't much left to find on it as it shut down around 2014 and never had a great online presence. I suspect a lawsuit around the same time was to blame, as, if any of its allegations were proven, it would have cost the advent home, Dr Senior, and the conference a lot of money and embarrassment. More on this later.
The Advent Home advertised a range of services from treating ADHD and general misbehavior to serious developmental disorders and outright criminals. Basicall, he wanted it to be everything from a more structured middle school to a juvenile detention center, and predictably, it would fail at both.
I don't know how my mom found out about the Advent Home, but I know her reasons for sending me. A nasty divorce between my parents caused me to lose interest in schoo, so I barely passed 8th grade, and I had started listening to Eminem. That's it. it seems so laughably tame but that's all it took for Dr. Senior to be able to convince my mom that this behavior would escalate and the only recourse was his school which was built on and advertised correction through a strict adherence to Adventist principles. Every student came with fundamentally different problems. Some, like me were struggling scholastically while several had been ordered there by courts for violent offenses and several had what I cannot give another name other than a complete stall in mental development (one student thought and acted like a toddler, mentally and emotionally well below his age).
We were all, however, given the same treatment regimen, Maturation Therapy. This I will argue is the root of the problem. Dr. Senior claimed to have gotten his PHD in psychology from the University of Jamaica. I am not going to cast aspersions on this institution, but if he did have this degree he missed some crucial lessons and did not keep up on developments in the field. Dr. Senior had identified 70 ideals he believed every young man should emulate as he matures. I could not possibly list them, but they ranged from keeping a clean room, respect for staff to whether you used harsh language to how often you prayed. These would have made for fine rules for a religious correctional facility, but this was the entire treatment plan. Each of the 70 points would have you ranked 1-5, and you graduated by achieving a 4.5 average. 230 points overall. An important note here is all of these points were external. There was no mention of healing trauma or discussion of past actions. We were seen as immature children and by forcing mature behavior our other issues would right themselves. Right? In short, Dr. Seniors idea of therapy was entirely about becoming presentable, respect for authority, and respect for God. I want to go through these because in each I see a failing not only of the school but Adventism's handling of mental health in general. Also while I cannot speak to the lawsuit I will be linking it below as I believe sexual assault survivors and I want to say what these points contribute to how this environment may have developed.
His entire idea of personal growth was based on becoming outwardly his idea of a respectable man. He was willing to cross any number of boundaries violating others' religious taboos, disregarding the desires of the parents and showing no interest in the students as individuals. We were broken and needed only to be put in his mold and recast. One student was Rastafarian and his father wrote a letter explaining their faith and why he shouldn't cut his hair. His father had barely left town when the boy was forced to get his hair shorn off. Our 'civilian' clothes were confiscated on arrival and sorted for how appropriate he felt they were. Anything he didn't like we would get back when we left. I never did. As for speech we were strictly regulated on what words we could say. Cuss words, and even adjacent words like darn, would result in a loss of points and thus longer before we would be able to go home. Instead of psychological healing, his priority was always to make us look healed on the outside.
The most egregious example of this was a boy I will call Zach. Zach had a severe developmental disorder that in my opinion Dr. Senior was woefully ill-equipped to treat but that never dulled his confidence. Because of his neurodivergence Zach was habitually unpresentable. Zach would frequently have food dripped down his shirt, throw temper tantrums in public areas and speak loudly about bodily functions that would have been amusing from a four year old but Zach was almost 14 and just beginning puberty if you get my meaning. At every turn, Zach was not met with treatment but ridicule. To the Advent Home staff, he wasn't sick, he was misbehaved and punished severely for it. We all had to run up to 3 laps of 1/3 of a mile as discipline regularly, but Zach's condition often racked him up more laps than could be humanly run. at one point, a new staff member refused to allow Zach to eat at all until he completed a number of laps I doubt would be humanly possible, let alone for a confused neurodivergent. One of the proudest moments of my life is that I stood up for Zach and pointed out, whatever punishment was meted out, food was an illegal method of punishment in the state. My shame, however, is how often I joined in the ridicule and bullying of Zach when the staff made punishments for his misbehavior punishments for all of us. As I say, I hope I have grown.
Dr. Senior saw scruffiness and cultural differences very much the way the Dursleys from Harry Potter did. These were not the markers of young men expressing themselves or of cultural differences but of moral failings to be stamped out or hidden until they faded into normalcy. We didn't need to discover ourselves, we needed to learn the joy of conformity
The real problems would come with his reliance on authoritative structures. Both the staff and students had clear hierarchies within them. New students would be Group Members, GM, while you could be promoted to Assistant Group Leader, AGL, a Group Leader, GL, with a possible Super Group Leader SGL at the top All leaders had the authority to report misbehavior and physically restrain violent students. Here, we start to see the problems. What constituted violent behavior was entirely up to the authority figure, and unless there were witnesses who ranked equally, Dr. Senior would implicitly believe the higher ranked individual. Keep in mind that some of these kids had real criminal records, and as I've established, we were not getting our problems treated.
I want to use one student as an example. I'll give him a fake name (James) as I hope he's reformed and also should not be judged entirely on his actions when he was 16 but these are actions I either witnessed or saw the fall out of so believer their veracity. I was walking by him one day. he had been given a job he didn't want to do. Instead, he was sitting talking to a group he bullied but passed for his friends. He called out to me to do the job for him. I laughed and kept walking. he took offense and deciding I had disrespected him, chased me down, hit me, tackled me into the gravel road, and held me there until I begged to be released. Those words; I beg you to release me. I was cut, bruised, crying and bleeding. James was unharmed, but when I told Dr. Senior, he believed James because he was a group leader and I a lowly Group member.
One of the students who had been sitting on the steps with James, who I will call Sam, would get caught performing oral sex on James only a few months later. James assured Dr. Senior Sam had asked practically begged to do it, and here again, James authority had him taken at this word. They both received punishment, but Sam got the lion's share as he had initiated and must be gay. I firmly believe James pressured Sam into this, and likely not just this once.
Dr. Senior said the word "manipulative" more than anyone i have ever known. often as we lowly students tried to explain actions or avoid discipline for petty offences, he would accuse us of manipulating. In hindsight, this is how he viewed the relationship between those with power and those without. There were those the system had put in power and those below who now would try to manipulate those who had the power. from the bottom of the ladder, he was incapable of seeing sincerity or pain. only manipulation. To be clear, I don't know how much of the reality reached Dr. Senior's ears, but enough had to he had to be actively ignoring warning signs in favor of authority. I talk about this to show how Dr. Senior felt strongly that respect for authority was essential regardless how abusive the authority figure might be. Hold on to that too.
The final point is religion. It should not need said, but Dr. Senior wanted all of us studying the bible and practicing a very conservative faith even for SDA. This is fine(ish), but he also believed that Christ had predictable healing powers and that mental health was only a failing of the individual to have the faith necessary for healing.
We were all encouraged to discontinue any medications we might be taking. For me, with ADHD and Ritalin this was probably fine, but for one student with borderline schizophrenia this led to several violent episodes he was blamed for despite the staff convincing him to get off his meds. A diabetic student was eventually pulled from the program after his 4th hospitalization when he was allowed to opt out of his insulin/ blood sugar checker. Christ, as a placebo alongside medicine, is silly but fine, but as a replacement for lifesaving drugs, it can have dangerous consequences, and Dr. Senior refused to see this. In Dr Senior's mind, I believe, these boys weren't sick, they were failing to let Jesus in to heal them and that's what needed to change.
Furthermore, behavioral incidents were often met with explicitly Christiaan remedies. Issues of bullying and cursing would require not time out but a scripture reading. sometimes alone sometimes publicly, along with a public admission of what we did. This was done at a weekly meeting when Dr. Senior came down from his literal house on the hill to play mediator and in no metaphorical sense moral arbiter of our actions. in essence, he got to play God for 2 hours a week.
The most heinous example of the use of religion however was, Mr. V who I believe saw jail time. This man was a thousand walking red flags. He went to boys' rooms to pray alone, and he insisted on a separate bible study with a group of boys he was particularly close to. Outwardly, however, he was fanatically religious, and this was enough to assuage Dr. Senior of concerns. Mr. V was the guy who when the pastor said kneel for prayer he would stand with his arms to heaven, when the pastor asked for a moment of silent reflection he would exclaim AMEN! every five seconds, He played moral police intervening in behavioral issues after considering a matter settled if a student agreed to a private prayer session (yup, nothing sus here). Dr, Senior employed and sung the praises of Mr. V's work even as this concerning behavior began to escalate to the point that some students, formerly in his inner circle, began to actively distance themselves from him but were unwilling to discuss why.
Dr. Senior could not, however, ignore when Mr. V took a kid off campus without telling anyone to a small mountain cabin to "diet" for three days. Only once the police were involved could Mr. V. 's behavior no longer be ignored and his religious authority be given priority. If you are wondering Mr. V gets a fake name because, while I am telling the truth to the best of my knowledge, we were never told the full story. The student in question was withdrawn before he was willing to talk about it, and Mr. V was not seen again. I don't know what he was charged with or what stuck but I think we can put the pieces together.
Fortunately, other than some more bullying and getting through a nasty flu with nothing more than pepper water as medicine, I graduated. Yeah, shocker, he also didn't like doctors. The shock of seeing how normal people practiced Adventism after a year of this cult like fanaticism has a lot to do with why I'm on this sub and not the SDA sub, but I got off easy. For the criminals and really troubled kids recidivism was high, with several being in a proper prison weeks or months after. Several would turn around and be back at the Advent Home in months because the behavior never stopped, they just learned to act like it did. But the real harm was a boy I'll call Dan. He had depression when he arrived, it was never treated but pushed down. He pushed it down so far he became the best of us. he was very nice and a bit of a mentor to me. he worked hard and became SGL (the highest one remember) with one of the highest scores that an Advent home graduate had had. One year after leaving the school, he committed suicide by diving into an empty pool. Only then, did I realize he wasn't fine. He was never fine. He had mastered acting fine. The furthest I got in Psychology was a single college course and some youtubers (and the small bit of real therapy I've had) but even with this, I can see how Dr. Senior was out of step with the psychological practices even of the early 2000s. He was so much more focused on appearance and behavior than he was ever interested in the root cause, his system often became a new trauma rather than treating an old one. An excessive respect for authority led to abusive behavior being overlooked if not encouraged, and Jesus was treated in a professional setting as a supreme healer despite real medical issues. I saw these issues in the church I left, and my mom and extended family still practice in. This is why I really feel compelled to write this. People like Dr. Senior may seem like an Adventist version of Godwin's law. "Oh, yeah? If we can look at Jesus to heal, it'll end up like the Advent Home!" (Or Miracle Meadows) I know this sentence has never been uttered by anyone but me and maybe Sam, hope you're ok buddy, but the fact is Dr. Senior is the end stage of the ideas put into their most harmful practice, and some like Dan paid with their life.
Finally, through all of this, I remember how Dr. Senior was treated by outsiders. Entire churches prayed for his good work to continue, meetings were held for him to teach others to copy his program, he was featured multiple times in the herald and other Adventist publications. Like Mr. V his religiosity was a shield despite all the red flags, and like Mr. V he was given the respect and admiration that came with his position all the way up until there were consequences. It isn't that no one could see there were problems. He flew his red flags high. Its that the church didn't want to see the problem and didn't care until the outside world took action.
Please, if you take anything from this, look out for your SDA relatives who struggle with mental health. The church sure won't. But on a larger note, I hope this to be part of a larger discussion about bringing awareness to the churches failing on mental health and how they overlook monsters in their ranks who just haven't embarrassed them yet. Dr. Senior never sexually assaulted a kid as far as I'm aware, but he enabled and protected abusers in service of pushing his ideology all while the church sang his praises. Disclaimer: At no point in this do I feel I deliberately lied or exaggerated, but these are 20 year old memories of a traumatized 13 year old who was never given the full story. I tried to leave hearsay out, but I did find out what happened to Dan through the grapevine, though from someone I believe completely. If there are minor inaccuracies, I do apologize, but I believe I have been accurate in the larger points.
Names are changed for obvious reasons, though my change style switched cause I am bad at coming up with names when stressed, my D&D group will confirm, and this is stressful to write about even now.
The Advent Home I attended is shut and a very attractive hotel now. My research showed he partnered closely with miracle meadows, which is also now shut. If by chance Dr. Senior is still practicing somewhere, or has appointed a successor, please persuade family to look closely and critically at his practices before signing anything. He used to complain kids were manipulative but, as with all projectors, he was the master manipulator. He convinced people to consent to incredible things. I believe everyone can change if they want and as far as I know he had the education to do good work. Instead, he chose to ignore that education in service of his biases. Unless he has updated his treatment, please at the very least accompany his work with another well regarded psychologist.
