A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

What does this have to do with GAFS?

In the most simplest form, several of our moderators exclusively use 3rd party apps such as Apollo. We feel strongly about this because today it's 3rd party apps, tomorrow it could be bots such as our mod bots (u/GAFSBot, u/GAFSAutoMod, and u/GAFSUSLBot), and eventually things such as old.reddit could potentially go away. Reddit has always been something that no matter who you ask you'll always get a different way of browsing. The current API structure give users the freedom to experience Reddit in whatever way they see fit, and up until very recently certain moderation features on Apollo were not even available in the native Reddit app.
I'll keep this pretty short as we all have the attention span of a squirrel. This is something we felt we had to act on, and want to do our part in letting Reddit know that we're against these changes.

This is just my story so take from it what you will. My wife and 2 kids went to DR with another family of 4. All inclusive swim up room , booked in the family suites (as opposed to the “adult” buildings). Upon arrival we were booked in and given keys. Went to the room… which ended up being in the adult building. Not sure still what distinguishes one from the other but i didnt care. It was late thanks to flight delay and i just wanted to chill. Upon entering the room the odor of piss punched me in the face. It literally smelled like a parking garage stairwell. But as i said it was late and i had a few drinks and figured we settle it the next day. At Mirage they assign you a butler, who really did do his best. So the following day i mentioned this to him and he said hed take care of it. I went to the pool for the afternoon and got a text saying housecleaning did aroma therapy and extra cleaning. When i went back to the room I expected to notice a difference but now it was a combo of pee and a god awful air freshener. I told our butler we needed a new room. I was not obnoxious about it. They granted my wish…. To the room right next door. Guess what? Smelled in there too. I asked again to move but this time they were insistent that it can be taken care of. I said unacceptable and requested a move to the family section where we were booked. This apparently was an issue. They told me it gets this way and theyd bring me a dehumidifier… which they did , which did nothing. I could not fathom how these folks thought this was nothing. It was pungent. Eventually we moved again… but i had to accept a non swim up suite…. But it was nice , smelled good and the pools were still only seconds away.
Moving on ….. even though its all inclusive this obviously doesn’t mean you aren’t going to spend money , mainly on tips and trinkets…. Its part of doing business. However i feel like the pressure to tip here is unprofessional for a resort of this supposed stature. I tip well for a job well done… but it seemed like i was always being solicited for something. I wore a Red Sox hat … so often a convo would begin with someone who works there about Big Papi…. That quickly turns into a sales pitch for photos…. Jewelry… excursions… etc. Im good at saying im all set but some of these dudes are relentless to the point its not comfortable.
The actual pools were awesome met some nice folks. But par for the course mixed drinks taste like they use artificial sweeteners and are weak. The beer selection is comical…. Coors Light, Heineken and Presidente …. Thats it. My suggestion is stick to rum and coke… you know exactly whats going into the glass. There are a couple of nice bars that if you tip well they proof up you cocktails…. But at a resort like this should i have to?
The food was okay. We were a big group and the buffets were popular with us. Lots of the food was fine but things like cold cuts, cheeses, shrimp and sushi arent made for outdoor buffets in 98 degree weather. The restaurants also were underwhelming. Dined at the steak house twice and the teppanyaki place once. These meals were not high caliber. The steak house was non reservation so they try and get you in and out ASAP… which guess is par for the course. The portions were small and they didnt cook the steak as ordered. The Japanese place was also fast paced , despite a reservation . Food was delicious (my kids ate the scrimp fried rice with eggs and they hate seafood and eggs) but once again the portions were a joke. Room service is what it is. Takes minimum an hour and its just mediocre at best. The night we arrives i order the “Chicken Breast Dinner with potatoes and vegetables” i got 2 grilled oversalted chicken tenders with a side of still chilled potatoes. No veggie at all. Snacks and soft drinks as well as the limited beer selection was replenished daily.
Not be entirely down on the place…. Its a nice place. The entertainers and help staff are great. They seem enthusiastic and are good at getting folks up and moving. Obviously the beach is gorgeous and the water beautiful. We went and swam with sharks and stingrays …. Went bottom walking with the space helmets and had a nice party at a sand bar. Once again drinks weak and cheese sandwiches were the lunch we were served. I also went golfing- free green fee but carts and rentals cost some cash. The course was all ours , which was awesome… i saw some cool wildlife and the course is in good shape given the heat. At the turn we got a saran wrapped chicken salad sandwich with almost no chicken in it.
The pool is where spent most of our time and all around the pool are walk out suites. For the first 4 days we were there, a woman allowed her what seemed like a 6 year old kid frolic around buck naked on their outside cabana bed. This suite was literally 30 feet from the swim up bar. Bizarre.. no one ever told her to cover him up- she didnt care. I just set up shop away from them but it stuck how strange the scene was.
The casino is nothing to write home about. We play some roulette. A girl with our group turned 20 bucks into 200 and you think we were in Vegas the way they kept eyeballing her and changing the person spinning the ball. The “pit boss” stayed put right up until she cashed out.
And just to put a cherry on top…. The day we were leaving….. i needed more cash to tip the butler. I had tipped 20-30 a day everyday but ran out of USD The 1 atm at Mirage was out of service …. I walked to the next resort…. Elegance and their atm was down. I walked back and told Jeffry our butlet id borrow some cash from our friends and take care of him. He offered to take me to their 3rd property…so we went and the atm there promptly ate my card.
I had fun …. I can have a good time under any circumstances and my kids had a ball and thats what i pay the money for …. But i expected much more from this place. I was disappointed. I wont return again.

Hi all,
I figured this would be the best place to go with this question. I recently had a hard drive quit on me that contained a lot of RAW photo and video files from my past few years of photography that I didn’t have backed up to a reliable source (trust me, I know to do better from here on out and I’ve got a Synology that I’m setting up this week in conjunction with Amazon photos).
I sent the hard drive to a company in Texas called ACE Data Recovery because they gave free estimates if you sent your HDD in and they quoted between 300-1900 before I sent it in.
They just got back to me that it will be $2226 to get my data back. They quoted the source of failure as “The test results for your failed hard drive are in and have shown that the Head Rack Assembly is the failure mechanism. The Head Rack Assembly (HRA) is the device inside the drive cavity that supports the read/write heads; there is one head per surface. Attached to the back end of the assembly is a voice coil positioned between two magnets…”
I wanted to ask if that is an expected or reasonable price for this sort of repair. I know that there are national brands that are reputable but I don’t know if they will be any cheaper. I was hoping to get it done for a little under $1000 if possible. I can get the HDD back from ACE for around $25 so I’m considering that.
This may also just be a dumb idea but I’d figured I’d ask. Is it unrealistic to think to try this sort of repair on my own if I could order the part online?

As many of you are already aware, reddit has announced significant upcoming changes to their API that will have a serious impact to many users. There is currently a planned protest across hundreds of subreddits to black out on June 12th for 48 hours.

• Third Party reddit apps (such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun and others) have been told that they will be charged for accessing the API. Put simply, each request to reddit within these mobile apps will cost the developer money. No one is against paying a fair amount, but the amount quoted is comparable to what Twitter charges (which has been ridiculed by many for being extortionate). The developer of Apollo was quoted around $2 million per month for the current rate of usage and given 30 days notice of this change, which was too little notice to implement anything before incurring significant costs that they would be unlikely to recoup from users. Sadly, Apollo and RIF and others have announced they will be closing on 30/06/2023 as a result of this change. It is likely that other apps will follow. If they do remain open you will have to pay a monthly fee to cover your API usage.
• Many users with visual impairments rely on 3rd-party applications in order to more easily interface with reddit, as the official reddit mobile app does not have robust support for visually-impaired users. This means that a great deal of visually-impaired redditors will no longer be able to access the site in the assisted fashion they’re used to.
• NSFW Content is no longer going to be available in the API. This means that, even if 3rd party apps continue to survive, or even if you pay a fee to use a 3rd party app, you will not be able to access NSFW content on it. You will only be able to access it on the official reddit app. Additionally, some service bots (such as video downloaders or maybe remindme bots) will not be able to access anything NSFW. In more major cases, it may become harder for moderators of NSFW subreddits to combat serious violations such as CSAM due to certain mod tools being restricted from accessing NSFW content.

Open Letter to Reddit & Blackout
In light of what’s happening above, an open letter has been released by the broader moderation community, and DHL will be supporting it by going private for 48 hours starting on Monday 12th June.

He makes a lot more money than I do, and the other couple were supposed to be going with do also. He and I have separate bank accounts and I am responsible for our electric bill, groceries, and my car payment. He handles the rest.
They are planning the annual trip away and its quite expensive this time. Flights alone are $1400 per person and the airbnb is $900 per person for 2 weeks. Usually in the past I've used my tax return to pay for it but this year I ended up owing. I dont want to put the burden on my husband to feel obligated to pay for me as well. That isnt fair to him. He pays for so much already. I dont know what to do....
Please be nice, Im genuinely asking what you would do in my shoes. I already feel self conscious how little I can contribute before even thinking of a vacation.

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. The scale pricing for the API: $12,000 for 50 million API request. Apollo made 7 billion requests last month, which would put it at about 1.7 million dollars per month, or 20 million US dollars per year. Lots of big numbers, but for sheer cost comparison’s sake it is “only” $166 per month for the same number of requests from Imgur.
Effectively it means that Reddit is shutting down all third-party apps.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.
This isn't only a problem for users: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
In response, over 3,000 subreddits have organized a protest to make it clear to reddit that their blatant attempts to prop up their half-baked, insufficient mobile app by killing off the competition will not go unchallenged. What began with an open letter has progressed to a full on blackout of all participating subreddits after reddit demonstrated they were not interested in addressing our concerns with any meaningful action.
We learned that the API pricing changes would also have a profound impact on users who rely on the accessibility features found in third party apps that are severely lacking or missing entirely in the official reddit app. You can find more information about the impact in this thread from the /Blind subreddit.
On June 7th, reddit CEO Steve Huffman (spez) and several other reddit admins held a closed call with a select group of moderators to discuss the upcoming changes to the API pricing model. You can find the moderator's notes of this call over on /ModCoord. Reddit also provided their own notes of the call which you can see stickied in the comments of the same thread. (Reddit's notes were originally posted in PartnerCommunities which is a private subreddit for admins and mods to interact. Reddit gave permission for these notes to be shared publicly.)
There are a few takeaways from the call worth mentioning. Reddit did make a concession in exempting moderation tools/bots from the API changes. They have also promised to close the accessiblity gap in their own app, but provided no tangible examples or timelines as to how or when that might happen. Otherwise, they show absolutely no interest in budging on the ridiculous pricing scheme and seem content to watch every major third party application shut down.
There's another claim in the notes that bares further inspection: reddit claims that the lead developer of Apollo attempted to extort them for $10 million.
Yesterday, June 8th, the lead developer of Apollo posted an announcement confirming that the app would shut down. He also provided the receipts of his call with reddit, completely debunking the extortion claim. I strongly recommend reading the entire post for full context, but we'll link both the transcript and the audio directly for easy access. You can see that despite reddit apologizing multiple times for the apparent misunderstanding on the call, they still went ahead and posted their notes afterwards claiming he had "threatened" them. This is a deliberate act of deception designed to slander the developer and drive a wedge between users and third party developers.
So that brings us to now.
Today, June 9th, spez is holding an AMA to discuss the API. No time has been specified, but we encourage anybody with questions or concerns about the impending death of third party apps to participate. Might need to bring your own popcorn.

My MacBook Pro died. Getting repair sorted out was going to take a few weeks during which I could not afford to be without a computer.
So I bought a new MacBook Pro from Amazon to use temporarily with the intention of returning it when I got mine sorted.
However there was an accident with the new one a few days ago and it now has some minor cosmetic scratches on bottom edge of the machine.
I cannot afford to just keep it. And the risk of amazon not taking it back because of some cosmetic damage is what I’m afraid of.
Generally I know Amazon isn’t paying very much attention to returns. But I fear they will be more stringent with a computer.
I submit the request to return it shortly after I got it. Saying that I’m having some issues with it. The last day to mail it back is tomorrow. I could modify that and tell them that I also noticed some cosmetic damage to it as well?
Hoping for creative solutions on how to return it for a full refund.
One idea I had that isn’t ideal: tell Amazon a family emergency has come up and ask for another week to return it. Then buy one year of apple care plus for $150. And then take it to apple and pay for it to be repaired for $99 dollars under accidental damage. Then return it to Amazon. This would cost me $250 instead of what seems like a bigger loss if Amazon won’t take it back and I have to try and sell it “used”

Sir David suppresses a sigh. He couldn't say he hadn't been expecting a conversation like this. He gestures to a nearby bench and sits down, leaving Ariane room to scoot in next to him.
"Well firstly, I'd say you're my wife now. My surname does sound nice on you. A bit faster than I wanted to move perhaps, but let's call it a battlefield promotion."
Ariane offers him a half hearted smile. "Except I fled that battlefield like a little girl with her tail tucked between her legs. If I am your wife then my place is next to you. I can fight. You know I can fight David."
"Darling, in the end I'm the trained combatant in the family, and getting you out of the line of fire was my absolute first priority. This isn't to doubt your abilities, I think you're perfectly capable of defending yourself, but you don't have an Undaunted brand for thermal protection against a race known for fighting with fire, or any other covert protection. Nor are you an adept. You're immensely physically strong, far stronger than me even at your reduced size... but you're not a killer my dear... and I am."
Sir David sighs for real this time, but doesn't move his gaze from Ari's eyes. He had to meet her head on with this sort of thing. Take wife by the horns if you will.
"I don't want you to be a killer. It's my profession, I have no shame in it, for I end the lives of wicked people so good folk can sleep soundly at night. I did so on Earth, I do so now. I put myself at risk to protect the people I care about. My children. My grandchildren. My wife... and now my wives."
Sir David gently takes Ariane's hand, their fingers interlacing naturally.
"So if given a choice to ensure you're as safe as you can be, even if it means putting me at more risk... I'll always take the option that means you are as safe as possible. Even if that costs me my life. That's my promise. My oath. My duty was to Queen and country, and now to the Undaunted... but I took those oaths for Mary, my children... and now you."
Ariane nods softly, clearly still a bit upset.
"I ah... I understand, I think. I suppose I'm a bit upset with myself more than I'm upset with you. I was just... so scared. Even as I was incredibly, violently angry I was terrified... and the relief I felt when I ran was... shameful to a degree. Leaving you to die maybe. It hurt me a lot, like a razor was tearing at my guts. I just thought about what I'd do if you died or got hurt because I wasn't there and I-"
Tears start to well up in Ariane's eyes just a touch and David wraps an arm around her shoulders, pulling her in a bit closer.
"There, there. I didn't die. Nor was I going to. Not to trash like that. Nor is fear a shameful thing. Fear is a natural response. I get scared. Captain Bridger gets scared. Even Cannidor get scared at times. Usually of me or Captain Bridger in my experience. Anyone who says they feel no fear is a liar, a fool, or psychotic. Or quite possibly all three. Soldiers train to overcome their fear to accomplish significant things... but you my dear aren't a soldier."
David caresses Ariane's back, stroking down her spine and drawing a sigh from her as she relaxes a bit, tension bleeding out of her body.
"You need to master your fear just enough to flee smartly, summon help, barricade yourself, or as a last measure, fight. Which you did today. Just like you did on the Talasar Spire when you saved all those children. You're quite the heroine from just doing those things you know? You don't need to do more. Nor, if my preferences at all matter, would I wish you to. You're a beautiful soul to me Ari. I adore how fresh and bright you are about the things in the world you love. I want you to focus on that. Focus on being a joy to this galaxy... and to me. Instead of worrying about the profession of arms that is not your own."
Ariane sniffles a bit, then plants a kiss on David's cheek. "You know, you play the hard, tough, man, with that almost piratical swagger of yours... but you're just an old softy aren't you?"
"Guilty as charged my dear."
"I uhm. I think I'd still like to learn how to shoot. Or something. Just be better able to defend myself... and our children."
"Heh. Well I think we can take care of that... though I'll note that wasn't at all subtle Ari."
Ariane leans over again and kisses David hard on the mouth this time, her tongue briefly tangling with his and leaving him breathless.
"No. That wasn't subtle. I fully intend to reward my knight for gallantly protecting me, and you'll see just how unsubtle I can be David Forsythe."
"I'll look forward to it then. To close the loop on our previous conversation though. You know that if you had been even a talented markswoman with a pistol I'd have still sent you running at the earliest circumstance right?"
Ariane nods, nearly knocking one of her horns against David's head.
"I understand."
David gives her another gentle kiss on the cheek.
"Capital. Like I said, even if you're capable, your best defense is avoiding a fight entirely. You should only fight if you absolutely must. That's why I fought in the court yard. Not because I could win, but because we didn't have a clear or safe avenue of escape. As soon as we had such an avenue I got you out, and were I alone I'd have fought a fighting retreat to follow you in hopes of moving to a more defensible location. Or getting help from the wardens of the Inner Shrine."
"Which is exactly the type of behavior I have to beat into new recruits." Comes the now familiar smoky voice of Miri'Tok, as the click of her heels on stone announce her return to the room.
"I'm terribly sorry about the wait, police procedure is tedious, even for clear cases of self defense. David I'm told you have a bounty hunting license, so you'll be receiving some credits for their heads. Not extremely bad girls, save the boss, but bad enough to be worth some money. The local police are paying out a bonus for the living ones. That blue haired girl apparently won't shut up; she's rolling on her old boss so enthusiastically they had to bring a synth in to transcribe it all. It's going to be a busy couple of days for the capital district police force."
David nods. "Take half for yourself would you? I hardly need the credits and you did the lion's share of the dangerous work, I just had a little target practice."
Miri'Tok laughs. "Ah the sheer gall on your husband Ariane, a little bit of target practice he calls it. Some of the cleanest shooting I've seen in years with gangsters with rap sheets that combined stretch from here to orbit and it was just a bit of target practice! Hah!"
Ariane and David join in the laughter this time, the room returning to a hospitable warmth as Miri'Tok seats herself on a bench near the couple.
"I must compliment you as well Ariane." Miri'Tok says, orienting herself more squarely to the Agela.
"Me? What did I do?"
"You kept your head in a dangerous situation and didn't go to pieces like a great many women would have. This is a great deal of credit to your name. Even Apuk civilians, socialized to violence from birth, can go to pieces when real violence is forced upon them."
David nods.
"More or less what I was saying dear, you did a splendid job getting us help. If things had gone a bit more poorly, it's help we would have direly needed too."
Ariane's smile returns to her face like dawn for David, warming the room up even further as she snuggles a bit closer to him.
"Well if you're both telling me that, who am I to argue?"
Miri'Tok chuckles, and rises. "I'm afraid I must actually return to my duties, I've lingered longer than I intended. I'll take you down the hall and leave you with the Wardens in their ward room. Nar'Jan and the girls have been preparing an impromptu victory party for you both. Just a little toast, then one of the girls will give you the full tour of the war shrine. You're both welcome in the Inner Shrine whenever you please, so please come back while you're on Serbow and they'll gladly receive you."
Miri'Tok turns to leave, only to be stopped by Ariane tugging on her sleeve. When the Apuk warrior turns, Ariane holds up her communicator.
"Before you go let's exchange contact information. I really enjoyed our time with you, and I know David did as well. Perhaps we can meet again soon? Without another fight preferably."
"Oh!" Miri'Tok gets that same dusky tone that David associates with a blush in Apuk.
"I uh. I'd like that. Perhaps dinner or something? I know some great places to eat in the city."

Miri'Tok offers a bow from the waist and quickly hurries away, the echo of her heels fading down the corridor.
David raises an eyebrow and looks over at Ariane.
"You know, when you said you were going to show me how unsubtle you could be, I was expecting something a bit more... intimate shall we say."
"So let the knowledge that things can get even more forward make you wonder at what tonight holds when we get back to the Tear."
David chuckles, caught entirely off guard with the sexual aggression from the normally demure Ariane.
"You're showing me all sorts of sides of yourself today Ari. Still, that really was a bit too forward wasn't it?"
Ariane cocks her head, giving David a slightly confused look.
"What? She's an excellent candidate for a third wife. Better to preempt her asking a bit so we can take the time to discuss it, and it doesn't hurt to put the welcome mat out when to my eye she's so accomplished and so obviously interested. Plus she'd be a good recruit for the Undaunted from her decorations. She's a very skilled warrior even if she's not a battle princess. Though she might be a princess. You never know. She's not wearing a crown, but apparently a lot of the battle princesses in service to the Imperial military skip the crowns outside of formal occasions, instead only going by their ranks."
Another eyebrow raised, a common thing when Ariane was in the mood to surprise David it seems. "Where did you learn all that? I haven't the foggiest about how to read Apuk decorations."
Ariane shrugs. "When I finished that book about your unit back on Earth, Eastern Approaches, I read a book or two on contemporary Apuk martial culture. I thought it might come in handy."
"So what does your reading tell you about Miri'Tok?"
"Well as she said she's an Apuk Imperial Marine. She started as an enlisted woman, and has done a century of service at least. She's done at least a dozen combat deployments, and numerous space deployments. The difference being specifically going to a conflict zone, and floating around on an Apuk Imperial Navy vessel looking for trouble.”
Sir David doffs an imaginary cap. “An activity I heartily approve of.”
Ariane rolls her eyes with a smile before continuing.
“She has five wound medals, an even dozen valor medals in varying grades and has been named as a member of an Imperial martial order. Knights for lack of a better word. Not all that dissimilar from you really if you'd had another forty years with the Royal Marines and SAS. Then there's a variety of competence awards that aren't as important. Suffice to say, Miri'Tok is very good at what she does."
"Hmmm. Yes I could see that in the fight, and you think she's interested in me?"
Ariane rises, and saunters the step or two to David slowly, placing her hands on his shoulders and leaning down to kiss him deeply.
"Darling, from her axiom she's single. From what she tells us about how her family treats men and views sorcerers, you're literally one in a billion... and she got to fight alongside you. I've heard Ghorza Bridger crowing about getting to fight side by side with the Captain at a bar on the promenade after the Talasar Spire with the same enthusiasm most girls save for a once in a lifetime present or getting pregnant. I also could tell that her shield sisters were green with envy. Well. Greener than normal anyway. If Miri'Tok wasn't interested, I'd be worried she'd hit her head in the fight. Plus her body always seemed to be facing you, except when she was speaking directly to me."
Ariane stands back up and tucks some of her hair back into place, with an exaggerated attempt at a glamorous, flirtatious pose..
"Well, with such a gifted potential candidate it wouldn't exactly be a hardship to share. I'll just have to take solace in the fact that I'll always have a bigger rack than her."
David's eyes naturally drift downwards from her face, considering the rack in question, only for a slightly embarrassed Ariane to stick a finger up to direct his attention back upwards before covering her reddened face with her hands.
"My horns David. I meant my horns. I have bigger horns than she does."
It takes every fiber of discipline he's ever possessed for David to suppress the cheeky grin that desperately wanted to plaster itself across his face, and to tame the school boy giggle fit he so dearly wanted to have. He stiffens his upper lip like a proper British gentleman and manages to dryly respond.
"Well my dear, let's not talk about other women. You have a fantastic rack and I look forward to appreciating it later tonight."
Ariane shoots him a look, clearly over acting her slight embarrassment into mock outrage, playing along with her husband easily.
"Now you're doing it on purpose!"
"Yes, but you're cute when you're flustered."
"You're impossible David Forsythe!"
"That I am Mrs. Forsythe."
Ariane chuckles, and leans over, planting another gentle kiss on his lips.
"And I wouldn't have it any other way."

Hi all, I'm an exchange student coming to a university in Ontario in the Autumn semester for my full 3rd year.
Typically in British universities, we have an internship or apprenticeship system which undergrads usually do in either the winter or summer holidays for roughly 8-10 weeks for experience as per their degree programs. It is not mandatory but highly advised for future graduate opportunities. By default, all UK universities have a system of searching and recommending places where students can apply to intern or gain experience at.
My question is, is there anything remotely similar that exists in Canada? I know there's the summer vacation job things but I've heard that's mainly small jobs in retail, customer service or restaurants/fast food which isn't really the case here as students to do that while still studying on the side.

I noticed that by tracking what eat to maintain calories, I eat a lot of refined sugar. Well over 100g and mostly in a sitting. This is very alarming to me and I don’t know what to do to avoid any damage I might have done.
My diet wasn’t always this bad. Due to financial changes I have had to resort to cheaper meals which have had much more sugar in them. This is also the reason I am not able to go to a doctor readily as that would cost me equal to half a month of food.
If I manage to fix my diet now, what other steps can I do to mitigate if not eliminate any damage I might have done? For other context, I am 135lbs and around 5’8; family history has diabetes and I have lost around 130 pounds over the course of 5 years through a personal effort.

I'm sorry if I sound super pessimistic. I understand I should be thankful for the opportunity of being in medical school, being able to make it to the third year, and whatnot, but it's so difficult to stay positive at this point. I dread getting up in the morning and moving. For the debt that I'm digging myself into every day, the quality of the education comes nowhere near. Realized of how much a shit show the system is when I started rotations. You just constantly hear the attending making comments about, its costing you 1500 dollars to be here every week. Well WTF are u doing about it? Has the chief, who is responsible for student programs made any effort to come up with high-yield lectures given by attendings? No, just fucking have students make presentations and present to each other because that's what I'm paying for? Or stand for hours in rounds, to listen on attending to resident conversations? and half that shit goes over my head cuz I haven't covered the basics yet because Iven pulling 12-hour shifts of running around your errands? I'm so exhausted. Why do I need to be doing on-call shits if I'm not learning shit? I already struggle with depression, so I know how limited my mental energy is. I've made it this far, I've given up so much to get here, and it feels like it's never going to end, or it's never going to be ENOUGH. And the feedback I get it, you weren't impressionable enough! WTF Does it ever get better? Or is this it?

We knew we didn't have it all figured out, we just hadn't had a reason to care, yet. God, we wish we had cared just a little. We should have set up a savings account. We should not have gone on shopping sprees or out to eat so many times. We set ourselves up for failure, and everything was quickly spiraling out of hand.
We didn't have the money to fix the fucking window. Where were we going to find the funds to cover transfer fees and all the other additional moving costs? My mom wouldn't have had any money to spare, and we were too ashamed to tell Devon's parents we were getting kicked out. We had to do this on our own.
We had already maxed out the credit card that I should have had no business with in the first place. We still owed the bank quite a few thousand for the vehicle that we had to take an additional line of credit out on in order to cover the costs of repairs. We had never missed a bill payment, and although our credit was decent, our debt-to-income ratio was garbage. No bank would be dumb enough to lend these two idiot kids another goddamn dime.
With too much pride to admit defeat, we left ourselves with no parental guidance on what to do next. They already had their doubts in our marriage, I didn't want to solidify those suspicions by confessing that we were, in fact, in over our heads. We didn't have to be in over our heads either; we were making good enough money. Reckless behavior and impulsive spending is what got us here. We did this to ourselves. This was our fault.
There was only one option left. I had to borrow against my school loans.
As I mentioned before, the military was willing to cover 50% of my college tuition since I was only active duty for less than a year. There were additional, optional, loans available to me that I had never accepted. These loans were meant to cover book fees and school supplies, but instead, they were going to help us get into a new living situation. The best part was, we didn't need to concern ourselves about repayment for those additional loans, or the other 50% of my tuition that wasn't covered, until 6 months after I was no longer considered a "full time student." I was sure we'd have our finances in line before I graduated college, but for now, we just needed to find a fucking place to live.
Fortunately for us, we were smack dab inbetween two large military bases. This meant that the area was full of temporary people; military personnel are constantly relocating. Also, fortunately for us, most landlords didn't require active duty personnel to jump through too many hoops to be approved for housing. Renting to active duty personnel was usually always a safe bet since active duty receives consistent, guaranteed income. A landlord also knew that the military would garnish a member's paycheck if said member didn't pay a debt.
Within two days, I found a house for rent. I called the agent on the sign in the yard and scheduled a walkthrough. She was able to meet Devon and I at the house that same evening. She didn't ask for references or living history, thankfully. She just wanted 2 month's rent to kick off the lease, and the house would be ours. Deal.
Thank god for loans.

So obviously as the title states I’m looking for weight loss advice. My body holds 200lbs pretty well but I’d love to feel and look better. I’m not distraught over how I look most of the time but still know that if I don’t lose it now it’ll just get harder.
I started a couple of weeks ago, but this week is the only week I’ve been consistently running. I run 10 minutes per day and am working on running the entire time with no walking (I did a 5k last year and want to do another and beat my time…). I’ve gotten to where I can run the entire 10 minutes and even did 15 straight yesterday! I’m making sure I keep a steady pace and got my first ever sense of runner’s high yesterday. I have running shoes and feel really good about my progress for the first time in years. I’ve always been terrible about staying enthused and motivated about working out but it feels really good right now.
As for nutrition, I’m trying to drink a ton of water and am adding protein shakes and healthier foods to my diet. It’s hard since I am living with my parents right now and while we are all wanting to lose weight, denying good, home-cooked food isn’t exactly something I am thrilled about or want to do. We’ve all started eating somewhat better but I’ve considered going vegetarian (not strictly) when I move in a month to aid in health and weight loss.
Does anyone have any advice? I’m worried about moving into a new university and being scared to run on campus or not being able to afford healthy foods. My target goal weight is 150 which is probably not very obtainable but that’s what I was when I was an athlete at 18 with my same height.
