L15 Gen 4 vs E16 (AMD)

2023.06.10 05:41 CodingBuizel L15 Gen 4 vs E16 (AMD)

I was thinking of getting a Thinkpad and I have settled on getting either the L15 gen 4 or the E16. Both cost nearly the same. The T series is too expensive for me. I will be using the laptop for programming, light gaming and streaming. I will not be using an external display or a dock.
Specs: L15 Gen 4 * CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 7730U Processor * RAM: 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) SO-DIMM DDR4 3200MHz * SSD: 1 TB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe Gen4 TLC Opal * Display: 39.62cms (15.6) FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 45%NTSC, 250 nits, 60Hz * Wireless: RZ616 Wi-Fi 6E 11AX (2x2) & Bluetooth® 5.1 * Ports: 2 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI 2.0, RJ45, Headphone / mic combo, MicroSD card reader
E16 * CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 7 7730U Processor * RAM: 24 GB (8 GB Soldered DDR4 3200MHz + 16 GB SO-DIMM DDR4 3200MHz) * SSD: 1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 TLC Opal, Empty M.2 2242 connector * Display: 40.64cms (16) WQXGA (2560 x 1600), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%sRGB, 400 nits, Narrow Bezel, Low Blue Light * Wireless: Realtek RTL8852BE Wi-Fi 6 11AX (2x2) & Bluetooth® 5.1 * Ports: USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (full-function), USB-C 3.2 Gen 1, 2 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI 1.4, Ethernet (RJ45), Headphone / mic combo
I've heard that the L series is more durable and has better build quality than the E series. Is that still true?

2023.06.10 05:18 nickstart37 Double Feature Order?

I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the ideal order for a double feature with two different toned movies? Should you set the fun mood with the comedy and then end on a dramatic and satisfying bang with the drama, or do you treat the comedy like a desert after a fulfilling meal? I know the debate is raging on the preferred Barbie/Oppenheimer double feature order, and I recently programmed City Lights/Being There in that order but couldn't decide if this really was the best way to go. Curious on everyone's thoughts!

2023.06.10 04:20 CulturePractical2079 Feel like I am can’t catch a break.

I am a 29 YO father of three boys. 2, 1, and now a newborn. We had a sweep of strep and a stomach bug go through the house which hit all four of us pretty hard. The stomach bug caused my wife to get dehydrated and pushed her into early labor. We just had our third baby preemie at 35 weeks so he has been in the NICU for the past two weeks. The first week I couldn’t get leave put in in time for my paternity leave so had to have family up and use lots of sick time to help where I could. This past week I was told I was good to go for my leave and have been spending it with my two toddler boys. I have had help in most days for family as we had a resurgence of the stomach bug go through the house.
Our boys have been at home because their early years school program ended for the summer, but we had them enrolled in a summer program knowing we would need the help. I have been managing the house and the boys the last week while my wife spends time in the NICU with our newborn doing my best to support her. I was really looking forward to the boys going into their summer school program so I could wrap up some projects around the house. I have been working on a bunk bed for them for 4 months now on weekends and nights when I have the time. I am nearly done sanding and will be finishing it soon. Or so I though I had powered through this week with the light at the end of the tunnel being that I could finally get it finished next week while the boys are in school.
Got a call from my boss today that I was a few months shy of qualifying for paternity leave, and so would have to apply for a unpaid leave of personal absence for the last week, and time going forward. HR sent me an email early this week which I missed in the chaos of everything happening. My boss wasn’t difficult or upset about it they were very understanding. With it being unpaid we had to crunch the numbers, and I am going to have to go back to work for the remainder of this month to make sure I can get the personal time in July for a beach trip, as our budget and vacation days for the year are already tied up. My wife is a stay at home mom so we don’t have a ton of options there.
Just feeling super let down going into this week I feel like I was just getting the hang of things handling the kids and was super exited to wrap up the bunk bed that’s been driving me nuts to finish. My wife was already trying to make plans for the first weeks of July when I am off work, and I told her not to that I really wanted to use that time on the bed.
Not a rant to say my boss is bad or my wife is just feeling like every time I see the light at the end of the tunnel on something something else throws me on a longer track. My newest son is healthy and doing great in the NICU for which I am grateful. Was just really looking forward to having a small amount of time to work on my projects and need a place to release some steam. Trying not to burden my wife with this she has a lot going on right now.

2023.06.10 04:15 Nazenn Appreciate some help refining and trimming down a new setup.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Primarily gaming from all gens, from emulating old ps1 games through to modern releases PC and RPCS3.
Specifically looking forward to Dragons Dogma 2 coming out at some point (using RE engine so I've been roughly looking at RE4 as a guide there with some wiggle room for DD2 being open world), but also Elden Ring which I can't run on my current rig, and Forgotten City which I barely meet the requirements for. As well as heavily modded minecraft with shaders.
I'm aiming for 1440p 60fps, as I mostly game on a TV in the same room connected via HDMI. The TV is 4k capable, but I don't really have the budget to make that my primary goal and I'm happy with 1440p. I also don't mind dropping back down to 1080p if things get too intensive, I'm really not fussy.
Side uses would be photoshop, though not heavily, and I would like to get back into 3d modelling though I don't really touch the rendering side of things so I'm not too worried about AMD/Nvidia differences there. Minor use of Stable Diffusion is the last point which I know AMD suffers on with windows, but I could install linux if I really wanted or just run the limited install of it. It's still going to be better than my current 1060 6gb.
I also don't care about raytracing
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
I had originally planned on just getting a new case and moving my parts so some parts I would have needed for that are already brought, as well as peripherals I've already decided on, so while I have a total budget of $3000 AUD, the functional budget left is:
~$2100 AUD for internal parts + monitors
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within the month, but pretty much as soon as I can get it finalized and am comfortable with it all and stop stressing about this or that thing
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Everything except an OS and perhaps PSU
Mouse/Keyboard/Monitors all have various issues so I'm just going to do a complete refresh at once.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Victoria, Australia. Local pickup from Scorptec, PCCaseGear, BPCTech, and CentreCom
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I do plan on reusing my EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply that I brought in 2016 as it's still within its warranty period of 10 years, unless it's recommended not to.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Highly unlikely as I think that would just make me anxious more than anything
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Motherboard - At least 2 M.2 slots that won't throttle the PCI-E lanes of the GPU or other slots if both filled. At least 5 USB-A slots on the back, a USB-C for the case front
Other then that not particularly. I would prefer to stick with intel, sorry AMD, just because it should handle the single core stuff that little better
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
Ethernet and Bluetooth 5. I'm sick of dealing with bluetooth dongles
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Case already brought, yes I'm one of the many people on the Fractal North train. I have a lot of wood and black furniture already haha.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No, going to move my license from my previous build
Extra info or particulars:
As I already have a rough build so along with a general review and cost cutting if possible, these are mostly my main points of concern:

2023.06.10 03:52 timpaton Electric yoghurt / pickle maker

Electric yoghurt / pickle maker
I have used an electric yoghurt maker for years. I replaced it when it died. My new one has much more control over temperature and time, and claims to be good for fermenting food.
I did a few pantry-temp lactoferment experiments some years ago, but I've never done a warm ferment.
The default pickling program runs 72 hours at 36°C (about 97°F).
It also has a user program setting that can do anything 25°-65°C for 1-99 hours if that's useful.
They reckon on pickling saukraut and kimchi with the default program, but give very scant instructions.
Any advice or recommendations?

2023.06.10 03:33 ceel_ need help with a RTX 4070 build

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Using primarily for gaming and occasional productivity- examples: Overwatch 2, Minecraft, Red Dead Redemption 2, Resident Evil 4 Remake, photoshop
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$1250-1350 flexible if recommended spending more
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I would like to buy parts asap.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Only PC hardware is included in budget, I have already purchased an RTX 4070 for $600 so that is part of my $1250-1350 budget
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
US and no Microcenter nearby.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
The case I have is a White Corsair 4000D Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX Case and a RTX 4070.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No overclocking
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I would like at least 8 cores in the CPU, 32GB RAM, 1-2 TB SSD. I am unsure if I should run ddr4 or ddr5 with the RTX 4070? No other exact part preferences, just looking for something that will run smooth and last me many years as I prefer not to do upgrades often(I am upgrading from a GTX 1060)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
So I can try and match my case, White + RGB is a plus but not necessary. Keeping cost on budget is more important. (I'd rather spend more on nicer parts than spend more for white colored)
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No

2023.06.10 03:22 Hitch42 r/audiodrama will go dark on June 12-14 in protest of Reddit's API changes.

TL;DR: This subreddit is going to be inaccessible for 48 hours from June 12-14. After that it will be back and the community can decide how to proceed. This is a place to discuss what's going on and possibly to link to other audio drama communities.
Recently, Reddit has made a policy change that affects how third-party apps will have access to their API, which is how other programs interact with Reddit. Basically, Reddit will start charging fees for that access. One of the results of this is that several of those apps cannot or will not pay for that access, and have decided to shut down completely. This affects other aspects as well, such as bots that some subreddits use to moderate their posts and comments. There are also some apps that people with vision impairments use that could be affected. In response, many subreddits have decided to "go dark" (which essentially means making the subreddit private and therefore inacceible) from June 12-14. audiodrama will be one of those subreddits.
There's a lot to this situation, and I cannot claim have all of the information, so I want to post what I know here and to let anyone else add to the discussion. I consider this subreddit to be a community, and what happens here should be what this community wants. A few says ago, I made another post about this and invited people to share their thoughts. In the comments, there was an almost unanimous vote to join the protest.
For people who want more information on this situation, this link may be of help, but anyone should feel free to post more here.
Save3rdPartyApps: Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps!
I was going to make this post yesterday, but then it was announced that the CEO of Reddit was going to do an AMA to address people's concerns. That did happen earlier today.
reddit: Addressing the community about changes to our API
I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I thought that it was worth waiting until after this had happened before making anything official. To the best of my knowledge, about two dozen questions out of thousands got answered, and it pretty much just reiterated what was already known and/or suspected. It does not seem to have changed the situation very much.
I want to address a specific issue that I've seen in several related discussions, here and elsewhere. That being the opinion that a two-day protest is ineffective. It should be longer than that, if not indefinite, until the situation is fully resolved.
I don't disagree with this sentiment, but I think a few things should be taken into consideration.
First, a lot of subreddits are taking part in this, including some of the top ones with with tens of millions of subscribers. Some of them are extending their blackout past the 14th, and some have started earlier, but even within this timeframe, I think this is a powerful statement. Let's at least see what happens.
Second, I don't know of a solitary "source of truth" to look toward that will indicate whether or not things are now officially okay enough to switch the lights back on. Right now, the subreddits ModCoord and Save3rdPartyApps are my main sources of information. For all I know, the places that are currently disseminating the information that I am looking through will go dark as well.
Third, this subreddit is a community, and I am one person. I don't want to the sole arbiter of how things play out here. I think coming back after a set amount of time allows this community to make its own decisions on what to do next. If something more needs to happen, we will decide that together.
Right now, my plan is to manually set the subreddit to Private on June 12 12:00 AM GMT, and the manually switch it back on on the 14th, 48 hours later. The dates 12-14 can make it seem like a three-day span of time, but I do believe that it is meant to be a 2-day event. Since I don't believe there's any way to schedule such a transition, I have to do it manually. There's a possibility that I won't be at my computer right at the stroke of midnight, but I'll try to be punctual. I'll change the subreddit's description to something informative during this time, which should be what will be displayed when people view the subreddit. After that, I'll pin a new post to the subreddit and let people discuss things further.
In the meantime, until this protest goes into effect, everyone should feel free to discuss anything about this here. Also, I want to encourage people to post links to any other audio drama communities in this thread, be it other platforms, apps, or other subreddits that will remain open during this protest. Obviously, I have a certain bias, but I'd like to think that this subreddit is one of the important communities in the audio drama world, but I know it's not the only one. And since it won't be available for a time, there's no reason why the community can't exist in a different form.

2023.06.10 03:14 Enemycommander Canadian, 1500$cdn budget, gaming pc, need help.

>**What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.**
Gaming pc, one to play minecraft at max render distance. 7 days to Die, Monster Hunter World, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring some day. I'm not worried about maxing resolution on these games per say, but I want to comfortable run them at 60fps, but also to in theory have chrome open in the background and listen to videos.
>**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?**
1500-1700$ cdn without shipping and taxes, closer to 2000$ if you factor those in I guess. It doesn't have to reach that mind you. If it's possible for me to save money and get what I desire I'm more than comfortable with that number being less.
>**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.**
Preferably within a week I'd like to order the parts.
>**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)**
So I guess what I need is:
Tower(I'd like something a bit roomy or mid sized rather than small),
Hard drive to run the OS (SSD preferably)
CPU (no preference)
motherboard (no preference)
ram (preferably 32gb)
graphics card (idk anything about these)
power supply (no preference)
cooling unit(preferably fans).
Don't know if I'm missing anything else. As I'm relatively noobish to building PCs.
>**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?**
I live in Canada, Saskatchewan, rural parts. So I'll be purchasing every part online.
>**If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.**
I'll be using a logitech MK120 wired mouse/keyboard combo.
I'll be reusing Turtle Beach Recon 70 wired gaming headset.
I'll be reusing my current monitor. An ASUS VP247QG. a 23.6 inch monitor.
And I'll be reusing a couple seagate harddrives for storage of games.
>**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?**
I'm not interested in overclocking, nor down the line.
>**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)**
Yes I would prefer an SSD, doesn't need to be large. If it were 500gb or less that'd be fine. 32gb of ram is what I assume is normal for gaming while having a web browser open. I don't know the value of OpenCL support. if it's needed to play the games I've mentioned then sure. I'd like for it to be fan cooled I guess.
>**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?**
I'm assuming a mid-tower or full tower is what I want. I just don't want to feel cramped and lacking room when putting it all together. A window sounds nice but isn't needed, preferably nothing flashy.
>**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?**
I do not need a copy of windows included in the budget.

2023.06.10 03:11 Training-Self4950 I wont be a disappointment

Today Is the last day I'll play video games and use social media platforms (instagram, facebook, messenger) I'm going dark and wont come back until a month. The sad part about this is that I already made this decision exactly a month ago from today, but because of my procrastination and laziness I have made 0, ZERO!!! Improvements into my life, infact I made it even worst over the past 30 days. My screen tome has sky rocketed to 12HOURS daily, there were multiple times I only showered once every 4 days, ate only about 1500 calories a day and most of it are from chips and ice cream, My pimples are getting worst like I literally look like I have a rice field on my face, and on top of that I've been watching NSFW content non-stop. And let me tell you I've been in this lifestyle since march of 2020, 3 whole years!!. I really dont want to disappoint my friends, they were really happy for me and even rooted for me to change. It would probably break them if they knew i made absolutely no progress for the entire month.
I already made a workout routine, diet plan, goals to achieve and how to achieve them, sleeping pattern and basically a self improvements program. I'm not really a begginer on self improvement so I'm pretty confident in this program I made. On top of that I made a contingency plan whenever I try to look up NSFW content my phone automatically locks for an hour and this setting can not be removed by rebooting the phone or by simply just "deleting" it, to make sure I dont get tempted I changed to a browser with a filter.
starting tomorrow, I will post my achievements of the day and I will have you all updated on what's going on in my life. It's currently summer so it's the best time to focus in my self. Today is the last day I'll linger in my sad current state. May God help us all.
Goals for the next 30 days:
•3 hour phone screentime max (20min per hour) •None or atleast lesser pimples on my face •2500 calories daily, 60g protein (bulking) •Complete 11 workouts •Conplete 11 plyo workouts •increase vert (current vert 29 inch) •increase height (current height 174cm, age 16) •Sleep 10 hours daily, 300 hours in a month, 9pm lights out •Nofap 30 day •learn basic russian atleast 1st grade level russian

2023.06.10 03:04 atomicfocus Kerbal Space Program Community on Lemmy

Hi all, I've been a big fan of the game for many years and have been a long time lurker. Originally got into the game from watching Scott Manley's videos. In light of the Reddit API storm and fallout I thought I would create a Kerbal Space Program Community here. Would love if many of you could come over, join and share all your amazing space innovations and shenanigans. Mods if this is not allowed feel free to remove.

2023.06.10 02:52 80Unknown08 The best and the eventual perspective of ‘AI art’

The best and the eventual perspective of ‘AI art’
It is imperative that we address and resolve this matter conclusively, leaving no room for further debate or uncertainty.
It seems that many people are still very skeptical about AI-generated art because they believe 'you didn't create it' or 'the computer did everything.'
Now, if you're a traditional artist who paints, sculpts, or creates hand-drawn animations, I salute you. I grew up appreciating those traditional methods. But when Photoshop was introduced, even at a young age, it blew my mind, and I began exploring 'computer-assisted' art and design. Over time, I ventured into various graphical software and eventually found my way to Blender, where I learned modeling, texturing, animation, and more. To be honest, even during that time, some of my textures and other elements were created by me through my own pictures or other means. But it didn't take long before those resources became easily accessible for free or were generated in fascinating ways. Yet, throughout this journey, I still considered it 'computer-assisted' art. Without my inputs, settings, and so on, it wouldn't exist, just like an amazing calculation on a calculator wouldn't exist without human input. Similarly, an 'AI' is software, instructions, and a series of tasks designed to handle specific functions. It's akin to the software that many proud artists today use to create their masterpieces. However, they claim that 'AI' art should not be credited to the person because they simply instructed the AI to create it. Yet, if you were to compare the results produced by a novice and a professional artist using the same AI, the difference would be night and day.
So, if the general perception were accurate, how would that be explained? And when these 'artists' mention that they started with a picture or modeled and textured the subject themselves, it's important to note that the image was immediately processed through various computer algorithms to enhance its appearance. This was done by the computer, not solely by the artist. Personally, I love sketching an initially simple dragon and then bringing it into an image-to-image transformation program. With time and effort, I can modify its pose and transform it into something epic (though I'm still learning). In these scenarios, I also began with an image of my own creation.
The next argument often revolves around AI-generated art 'stealing' people's works to create something new. While I'm aware that such incidents have occurred and I don't condone any form of plagiarism, it's worth noting that the effects of lighting, additional colors, styles, and tones added through various graphical software were also created by someone else. These elements were compiled into the software or other platforms, and whether knowingly or unknowingly, the users' end results were achieved by utilizing a computer-assisted form of art, leveraging color values, gradients, and techniques that someone else had previously made awesome.
I'm not certain if you share this belief. but I want to clarify that I respect everyone's opinions on this subject. In fact, I strive to respect people in all aspects as much as possible. However, I also have my own opinions, and that's why I felt compelled to share them. I believe that AI-assisted artistic expression should be recognized as a legitimate form of art because it requires creativity, input, and guidance from the artist. The AI is a tool, just like any other artistic medium or software, and it shouldn't diminish the artist's role or contribution in the creative process.
Ultimately, art is a reflection of human expression, and whether it's created with the assistance of AI or by traditional means, it should be appreciated for its aesthetic value, emotional impact, and the message it conveys. Instead of dismissing AI-generated art, we should embrace its unique possibilities and explore the novel artistic avenues it opens up. By combining human creativity and technological advancements, we have the opportunity to push the boundaries of artistic expression and discover new forms of beauty.
So, while some may question the legitimacy of AI-assisted art, I believe it's essential to recognize and celebrate the artistic vision and skill involved in the creation of such works. It's a fusion of human ingenuity and computational power, resulting in stunning and thought-provoking pieces that can captivate and inspire us. Let's keep an open mind and appreciate the diverse forms of artistic expression that emerge in our rapidly evolving world.
