I always knew my family was involved in some strange things. We never celebrated Christmas, Easter, or even Festivus. No, our main holiday was the Overtide on the first full moon after the summer solstice. As my parents constantly drilled into my head, we were Reepiners, the few remaining mystics of an ancient path. The Reepiners devoted their lives to travel. We explored other worlds, other universes even. Many of us died on the way, or sometimes, travelers from our spiritual path would come back totally insane and rambling. Some had even clawed their own eyes out, as if trying to stop the horrors they were seeing.
My father had no real power in the Reepiners, but he was one of the most accomplished travelers in the world. The young male children of the leaders would often accompany my father out to the woods and ancient cave systems near our house where he would show them unimaginable things. One of the young trainees, a brash young man who couldn’t have been older than seventeen, came back with totally white hair after a single night in the caves with my father. When I asked my dad what happened, he simply gave me a sly smile and walked away.
On my own seventeenth birthday, which took place a few years ago, I was to follow my father out into the forest before sunset. We would be heading to Hollowhead Cave, a ten-mile hike from the parking area. My father found the dirt road, pulling over on a slight turnaround. The nearest neighbor was miles down the road. We took no cell phones or supplies with us. We didn’t have so much as a knife.
We had been hiking for hours. I could feel blisters starting to form on my feet, and trickles of sweat rolled down from my hairline. The insects buzzed and chirped in the ferns and trees surrounding us, and a cloud of gnats followed us everywhere we went. There was a slight smell of flowers in the air mixed with pines. Other than the insects, it was a beautiful and peaceful forest. Finally, my father broke the long silence.
“Are you scared?” my father asked. I looked over at him. His strange, gray eyes were watching me, studying me. They seemed to snap and sizzle with inner energy. My father looked younger than his age, sturdy and well-built. Muscles grown over a lifetime of work filled out his clothes. Even though he was in his fifties, he had almost no wrinkles on his face and few white hairs.
Those are eyes that have seen beyond, I thought to myself. Those are eyes that have seen other worlds. The light that seems to shine from them must be holy. It must be the light of a thousand other universes.
“Does traveling really bring enlightenment, Pa?” I said. He shrugged, looking forward again.
“It may, or it may not. Enlightenment is already here at every moment, just like the same deathless mind is always present in every universe, or the same eternal soul is present in all the seconds of your life. Traveling to other spaces may help you see how this eternal consciousness is the same in every universe, how that endless mind stretches everywhere. It is more of a deepening awareness that you get from travel, one that brings enough wisdom to see the eternal is already here. But you didn’t answer my question,” my father said.
“Yes,” I said, “I’m afraid.”

It was nearly dark when we got to the cave. My father had been quiet most of the way. Now as he knelt in front of me, I saw what looked like a hand mirror in his back pocket, rolled up in cloth.
“What’s that in your pocket?” I asked.
“I always hold the black mirror,” he said. “We use it for training the young, opening them up to the idea of traveling, showing them a little of what is out there waiting for those with courage and fanaticism on their side.” The cave was cool and refreshing. Torches had been put out all along the walls, though I don’t know when they were lit. I heard what sounded like a babbling stream echoing up through the rocky chambers, and I smelled far-off water mixing with the smoke of the torches.
“What about the red mirror?” I whispered. I had heard rumors about it, but they were vague and contradictory.
“The red mirror? We don’t generally speak of it. High Priest Arkovitch personally attends to it most of the year. He tries to make it sleep. He tells me that prayer and meditation seem to soothe it. But sometimes it wakes up. I’ll tell you a story while we walk. It’ll make the time pass faster.” His voice seemed to crack slightly at this. His face looked grimmer and thinner in the flickering light. He looked at me with his strange, gray eyes, and in them, I saw the traveler my father truly was. He had an iron core that was so fearless, it almost seemed mad. He gave a nearly inaudible sigh, then he started the story.
“High Priest Arkovitch was given the three mirrors in a somewhat strange way. He was on a meditative retreat, sleeping outside, drinking from the streams, eating ferns and mushrooms and whatever else he could scrounge. After the first day, he woke up to a pile of dead squirrels next to his head. Their necks were all snapped, and they were stacked in a little pyramid.
“The second night, he tried to stay up, but after hours of standing guard, he lost the battle. He says he fell asleep with his back against a tree. When he awoke, he found a pile of hundreds of shoes surrounding him. He says that when he left the spot to forage or drink, these piles were taken away in the blink of an eye. It was as if they hadn’t been there at all. And there was no sign of anyone in the forest. He was out about a dozen miles from the road, far down a winding deer trail. He wasn’t going to be spooked by these childish pranks, he told me. He stayed another night.
“This time, he awoke to find a black box next to him. He opened it, expecting an animal’s head or some other rubbish, but instead, he found these three strange mirrors. He touched them all in turn, the white, the red and the black, and then he pulled them out. He looked into the red. The flat, polished stone on both sides sure made a poor mirror, he told me. In fact, all three of them were almost totally useless. They were clearly hand mirrors, of that he was certain, but who would put just a slightly reflective stone inscribed with strange runes in place of the actual mirror glass? And then his mind made a connection. He had heard of shamans doing similar things to this, making special hand mirrors for rites involving psychedelic drugs or mystical experiences, such as the shamans in Africa with their iboga vine.
“As he looked into it, though, he said the strange runes seemed to start glowing. They sent out red light that pierced straight into his head. He said he tried closing his eyes, but even with them fully shut, all he could see was swirling tunnels of red light. And then he was gone.
“When we travel, son, you know we hear the ringing. Any time you cross universes, all you can hear is that incessant, high-pitched sound which seems to vibrate your teeth and makes your eyes water.” I nodded. I had done some astral projection and lucid dreaming, both of which were considered vastly inferior by the Reepiners, like toys for children to play with. The most advanced in our religion always traveled bodily. It was considered the way to Liberation. Enlightenment itself was the goal, and seeing the true nature of all things by travel was the principal path. But some of the older members of our religion had told me that it was also terrifying, especially since anyone who traveled bodily could die if something in these strange, alien worlds attacked them.
“Arkovitch says the ringing was the most intense he had ever heard. He said he thought his head would split open. The red light still blinded him, but he felt himself floating. And then he felt the light receding and opened his eyes. The ringing in his ears gradually faded as he looked around, realizing he was in a strange jungle, still holding the red mirror in one hand. But the runes had stopped glowing and faded back into the stone, and the mirror again just looked like a useless decoration.
“He says the trees of the jungle stretched hundreds of feet above him with slippery, yellow trunks and thin branches periodically reaching out. Ferns taller than a man surrounded him. He could barely see over the thick vegetation. There were no cries of birds, no insects, no animals or any kind he could see. And then he heard a rustling, just a slight movement. Turning, he saw a blood-red shape duck into the ferns.
“Arkovitch began to run. He ran for his life. He didn’t know what kind of world he was, but he knew when he was being stalked. He heard more of those things, saw glimpses of that bright red hide they had. Then one jumped directly in front of him.
“It stood over ten feet tall, he said, with dozens of black eyes on stalks rising from the top of its thin, oval head. Its legs were sleek and reptilian, like the legs of a velociraptor, and long arms with knife-like claws at the end. It opened its mouth wide, showing rows of parallel serrated teeth, and from a bulging orange sac in the back of its throat, it spit at him. Sticky white webs shot out and wrapped around his legs before he even knew what was happening. And then he heard dozens more of those things closing in all around him, ready to begin shredding his body. These were clearly the apex predators. He was stupid for not realizing why there were no animal sounds now, he said. Likely the life in the area had gone silent and moved on when they realized a herd of those things were in the area.
“As the nearest one bent down, hissing, silver streams of saliva running down its pointed chin, Arkovitch picked up the red mirror. Instinctively, he traced his fingers along the runes, hoping for any sign of life from it. At once, it lit up, blinding him with red light, and he felt himself floating again, the ringing in his ears. He awoke at his house, nearly twenty miles away from where he had started just minutes earlier, still wrapped in webs.” My father stopped in front of me. We had just come to a sharp turn in the cave, the rocks jutting out on both sides and making it thin and claustrophobic. I had to turn my body to slide through. I saw my father having more trouble with his larger frame, but eventually he pushed himself through, sweating and slightly scraped up.
“Wow,” I said. “Where do you think he went?” My father shrugged.
“Son, the mirrors can send you anywhere at any time, but the red mirror in particular tends to send travelers to the worst places, where predators or demons are waiting. Other times, people have found themselves on nearly dead planets where strange robed beings floated in the mists. Arkovitch’s son used the red mirror, and he never came back at all. The mirror just showed back up in Arkovitch’s office after his son had been missing for three days. We don’t know where they went, and we don’t want more people being lost in such a way.
“And now, we are here,” my father finished saying. I looked around, frowning. It looked like just another part of the cave to me. And then, I realized I did see something. Out of the corner of my eye, one of the walls of the cave seemed to shimmer and glow. When I got close to it and touched it, it felt warm, too- much warmer than the other stone walls of the cave. It was only a space about the size of a door.
“Yes, my son,” my father said, “that is the gateway where we will send you through. Your test of manhood will be to see where the black mirror takes you.”
“If the red mirror took Arkovitch without any door, why do we need this one?” I asked. My father leaned in close.
“So that you don’t come back twenty miles away, at the bottom of a lake, or two thousand miles away at the bottom of some volcano,” he said. My heart was beating fast, and my stomach started to hurt. I was having second thoughts.
“OK, let’s do this,” I said. “Let’s see where the mirror takes me.” He nodded and took out the supplies for the ritual. With a prayer to the eternal mind, he handed me the mirror.
It felt much heavier than it looked. Moreover, it was as cold as death. As soon as I touched it, the runes lit up, blinding me. Pure white light shot out of them, and the shimmering of the doorway was so intense now that I saw sparks and electricity. And then, the wall opened.
Every hair was standing up as I watched it happen, as if I were underneath a forming lightning bolt. All I could hear was buzzing. Holding the mirror tightly, I walked forward, through the doorway. Instantly, everything went black and the buzzing and electricity stopped.
I opened my eyes in a strange place. The sun was warm, and the wind blew so fiercely that during the strongest gusts, I stumbled and feared I may lose my footing. Looking around, I saw mountains with iron and other metals peeking out, forming sharp, irregular blocks at the bottom. The tops disappeared under thick, stratified yellow clouds that blocked out the sky. Even the sun here was no more than a hazy, orange silhouette in the impenetrable cloud layer.
I looked around, unsure of where to go. I could barely see any signs of life on this planet, besides some strange, brown moss growing on the bases of the mountains. I couldn’t ask my dad or the mirror for help. But then, I heard something. At first, I thought it was part of the wind. But I quickly realized that it sounded more like gurgling and screaming. I realized with horror that it was in English.
“Help…” the voice said. “Please, for the love of God, help me before it comes back.” I followed the voice around some rocks standing twenty feet high and found a man on the ground- prostrate, bloody and missing a leg. He raised his head at my appearance and I realized I knew who this was. It was High Priest Arkovitch’s son, the one who had gone missing a while back. It was almost hard to recognize him with stringy hair, bloody scraped skin and nearly all of his clothes torn or missing, but I could still see it in the eyes and construction of the face.
“It’s OK,” I said, leaning down. “I’ll get you out. It’s going to be OK.”
“No,” he said. “It’s coming back. We have to go now…” He looked behind me, and his eyes widened. “Oh God, it’s too late.” Without any weapon or even an idea where I was, I turned to look at what horrors this world held- the same ones that presumably had torn off or even eaten this poor man’s leg. As soon as I saw it, I began to scream.

"Come on, please, it has to be somewhere around here!"
Cogwyn was at her wit's end, and apparantly desperate enough to be begging the rotten wooden floor of the abandoned saloon she was in.
"Pst. Magical weapon?" One hand clutching the faded map, Cogwyn opened the faded parchment to check where she was again. Following the long-lost roads on the maps, her finger once again arrived in the town of Foghorn on the map, the town built on the lake-bed of the legendary Lake.
The Lake that held a legendary weapon called Excalibur.
Cogwyn needed that weapon, right about now. It would honestly be very good timing right about now. Cogwyn had lost and given up too much to be here in the ghost town of Foghorn, knee-deep in the barren territories of the long-fallen Human civilization.
Goddamn it, Cogwyn was sure the spot she was in was at the center of the long-dried lakebed. Digging her claws into the plank, Cogwyn pulled as hard she could, trying to at least dislodge it a bit. The Crownhunters will be here soon, and then she'll be screwed. There was nowhere else to run anymore.
Digging her claws deeper into the rotten wood at that thought, Cogwyn pulled harder. Her muscles strained as she grunted in effort before she lost her grip on the wood and was flung backwards from the force used to tug at the wood.
"Ugh!"
Cogwyn punched the wooden board, then immediately regretted it as she registered the pain from her punch. Nursing her fist, Cogwyn turned towards the doorframe of the building, heart dropping in her chest as she saw the blurry figures in the distance, riding towards the saloon.
Immediately standing up from her crawling position, Cogwyn reached towards the pair of daggers stashed in her pant legs and found... nothing. Right, she lost them by throwing them at the Crownhunters where they promptly flew off into the cliff the Crownhunters were standing by.
Whatever, she still had her claws.
Jumping on the table, Cogwyn screeched on the table as the Crownhunters entered the room.
"Goblin! Do not resist your death, the crimes of your kind will be paid in full!" The Crownhunters drew their swords at their leader's statement, the swish of the sword causing a pleasant metallic sound as they were unsheathed.
"Crimes of what, fucking existing?"
"Yes."

2023.06.09 07:11 Clean_Strategy_9533 So..I rewatched Transformers Armada...and wrote my thoughts on EVERY SINGLE episode!
Ok, so Transformers Armada was the series that got me into the franchise. For me as a little kid, it was premium event television that I could not get enough of. I just have some of the fondest memories of it, and for that reason, I’ve always been scared to go back and rewatch it in case it wasn't as good as I remembered.
Well, It’s finally time, so I thought it would be fun to go episode by episode and do a quick little post how I feel about each one as I watch them. I remember the main plot beats and characters, but most of the episode by episode events I’ve long since forgotten.
I hope I walk away from it feeling just as good about Armada as I did back in the day: This will probably be a looong post (If you just want my thoughts overall, I'll leave a tldr at the end),

1 - 3) FIRST ENCOUNTER: Solid introductory episodes. I remember the start vividly. Wonder how the reactions to Megatron's redesign were back in the day. I like that they kept the roster small starting out to really get these characters down. AND HOLD UP, IS THAT EDDIE FROM ED EDD N EDDY playing Fred!?
4) COMRADE: Not much to say. More of the characters' personalities are getting set. The kids are tolerable, which is a good sign
5) SOLDIER: Wonder how they got this giant base here undetected. Guess the Agent Fowler of the Armada verse must be sleeping on the job!
6) JUNGLE: Welcome to the jungle, we got fun and minicons. I’m reminded of the forest fight in Revenge of the Fallen here.
7) CARNIVAL: Billy and Fred join in the fold sooner than I remembered. For some reason I thought they joined the team closer to the end.
8) PALACE: Again, many Revenge of the Fallen vibes in this episode. Guess Transformers and ancient Egypt really mix. Demolisher was robbed!
9) CONFRONTATION: The kids have been kidnapped! Oh wait, it’s just Billy and Fred? Let Megatron keep em
10) UNDERGROUND: Ya know Smokescreen, if you wanted to make a good first impression to the team, maybe scarring these children for life by chasing them like a monster wasnt the best way to go
11) RUIN: Carlos falls in love with a hologram and almost kills himself over it. We’ve all been there, right?
12: PREHISTORY: Episode title made me think we were getting some Dinobots this episode. Sadbois
13: SWOOP: Hot Shot vs Megatron. Not the absolute hype of Bumblebee vs Megatron in the TF:Prime finale, but I’ll take it
14: OVERMATCH: For some reason I don’t remember Scavenger at all.
15: GALE: I do however very much remember THIS motorcycle boi. Things are about to get interesting with Sideways taking the stage.
16: CREDULOUS: Starscream gets the Star Saber, with a name like that, no wonder he wanted it
17: CONSPIRACY: Classic Decepticon infighting episode. Megatron provoking it himself was fun to watch. I love the dynamic/relationships the Cons have with each other in this series, it’s always entertaining,
18: TRUST: A great mirror of the last episode. Scavenger is way more important than I thought. Wonder why I forgot about him.
19: VACATION: This episode was a welcome break from the autobot v decepticon conflict. Nature was an unexpected opponent, it was cool to see the autobots try to save the kids while maintaining their disguise
20: REINFORCEMENT: My dude Blurr is here! Such an awesome design and great dynamic with Hotshot. Love a good Bromance
21: DECISIVE BATTLE: Finally, an answer to the age old question, What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Sky lasers!
22: VOW: The minicons finally did something! Where was this the whole rest of the show?
23: REBELLION: Oh wow, this is the best episode so far. Diving deep into the relationships the decepticons have with each other. In many moments, they feel like actual friends, and it humanizes them a lot. Really great character work here.

25: TACTICIAN: YESSS! JETFIRE! MY BOI IS HERE!!! He was my favorite character out of all of them, lets see if he holds up

33: SACRIFICE: Megatron calling TidalWave as Shockwave lol, he doesn’t even go here! The show is known for its dubbing errors, but this is honestly the first time I really noticed it, it aint that bad most of the time. The rest of the episode escalated quickly. RIP Smokescreen. I know he comes back at some point, but he went out like a champ. It took a while, but the show is dropping bodies and building up the stakes!
34: REGENERATION: Oh wait, Smokescreen’s back! That didn't take long lol. Starscream joining the autobots was sudden, but inevitable. Reminds me of the episode of Avatar when Zuko joined the squad. We’re cooking now.
35: RESCUE: The minicons seize the means of production!
36: MARS: A Jetfire and Starscream buddy cop episode? Don’t mind if I do!
37: CRANK: Starscream continues to be THE highlight of the show. You can understand the emotions and conflict he’s going through and even when he makes the wrong choice, you feel for him. The kids also deserve a mention. In shows like this, it’s easy for the kids to become annoying or just distractions, but here, they’re the emotional core behind Starscream's attempt at redemption, the best parts of the show would fundamentally not work without them around.
38: THREATEN: Alexis, there are 4 human boys your age and you’re dreaming about Starscream. I don't know if that says more about you, the boys, or Starscream
39: CRISIS: The death of Optimus Prime. As a kid, this blew my mind. It was probably the first time I ever saw the heroes lose in such a huge way and had no idea it was even possible. His gray lifeless body shattering in space, Megatron’s remorseful cry, and Jetfire’s scream opened my mind to the places these stories could go.
40: REMORSE: Trouble in paradise. Hotshot vs the autobots wasn't something I expected, but was handled well enough.
THE UNICRON BATTLES:
41: DEPART: The Unicron Battles begin! I remember Cartoon Network hyping this up so much, and I remember it definitely delivered! This was the point where the series really...transformed. Also, someone send Rad's dad to a therapist. That dude has depression.
42: MIRACLE: The not so rude awakening of Optimus Prime. A big surprise from this rewatch is perspective. As a kid it felt like forever, but Optimus was only gone 2 episodes!
43: PUPPET: Nemesis Prime Megatron can fuse with Tidal Wave! Megatron becomes Galvatron! Everyone gets a paint job! Optimus Prime somehow has a new Super Saiyan mode with “Overload” So much happened this episode...but none of it was explained or made much sense. This one really should have been two episodes, which is unfortunate because I remember the reformatting of the bots being mad hype as a kid.
44: UPRISING: Unicron makes himself known. The board is set, the pieces are moving.
45: DASH: Now we’re getting to my favorite part of what I remember from Armada: The Autobot/Decepticon team up! It was such a cool idea back then, and still is now because we dont really see it happen in other continuities
46: DRIFT: Random time travel! Could have done without that, but it is what it is
47: PORTENT: Step aside Carlos, it’s Alexis’ turn to almost kill herself for the most inconsequential thing, this time...just a rock!
48: CRAMP: Well, there it is. The death of Starscream. You ask anyone what the best moment of Armada is, or even just one thing they know about the show, and they’ll point to this. The show really earned this episode with the fantastic characterization of Starscream beforehand. Not only did Starscream go out like a champ, he cemented his place as a part of Transformers history forever.
50: ALLIANCE: The Autobots and Decepticons officially teamed up, and with it comes many fun interactions between the two adjusting to the partnership. Wish we had like 10 episodes of just this because the possibilities were limitless!
51: UNION: Some noticeable dubbing issues here with Demolisher talking in Red Alerts voice, but overall continuing the assault was just as hype. Thrust dies by basically tripping over himself. An appropriate end if ever there was one.
50: ORIGIN: The battle reaches it’s climax while we get into some mind trick shenanigans with the kids. Overall, it’s still an grand scale conflict. I wish the Unicron conflict was one or two episodes longer so we could see more interactions with the bots and cons together, and giving more to some of the characters who got sidelined, but I guess they didnt want it to drag.
51: MORTAL COMBAT: This is the end, beautiful friends. I’m glad it came down to Optimus vs Galvatron one last time, with both going no holds barred. With Galvatron sacrificing himself to end Unicron ending the conflict on his own terms, the autobots and decepticons at peace, and a final goodbye, I think the ending is perfect!

Whew. That was quite the journey. I’m happy to report that I had nothing to worry about, nostalgia won out and I enjoyed every moment of my time going back to Armada.
Aside from a couple oddities, the shows infamous animation and dubbing errors never really were all that big a deal when watching and I wouldnt have noticed many without having them pointed out after the fact.
I never saw Energon and Cybertron, but I was always ok with that since the end always felt like a natural conclusion. Maybe I will someday, but for now, I’m glad this rewatch reignited the spark with my childhood favorite, and it definitely won't be another 20 years before I Roll Out with Armada once again!

Well, It’s finally time, so I thought it would be fun to go episode by episode and do a quick little post how I feel about each one as I watch them. I remember the main plot beats and characters, but most of the episode by episode events I’ve long since forgotten.
I hope I walk away from it feeling just as good about Armada as I did back in the day: This will probably be a looong post (If you just want my thoughts overall, I'll leave a tldr at the end),

1 - 3) FIRST ENCOUNTER: Solid introductory episodes. I remember the start vividly. Wonder how the reactions to Megatron's redesign were back in the day. I like that they kept the roster small starting out to really get these characters down. AND HOLD UP, IS THAT EDDIE FROM ED EDD N EDDY playing Fred!?
4) COMRADE: Not much to say. More of the characters' personalities are getting set. The kids are tolerable, which is a good sign
5) SOLDIER: Wonder how they got this giant base here undetected. Guess the Agent Fowler of the Armada verse must be sleeping on the job!
6) JUNGLE: Welcome to the jungle, we got fun and minicons. I’m reminded of the forest fight in Revenge of the Fallen here.
7) CARNIVAL: Billy and Fred join in the fold sooner than I remembered. For some reason I thought they joined the team closer to the end.
8) PALACE: Again, many Revenge of the Fallen vibes in this episode. Guess Transformers and ancient Egypt really mix. Demolisher was robbed!
9) CONFRONTATION: The kids have been kidnapped! Oh wait, it’s just Billy and Fred? Let Megatron keep em
10) UNDERGROUND: Ya know Smokescreen, if you wanted to make a good first impression to the team, maybe scarring these children for life by chasing them like a monster wasnt the best way to go
11) RUIN: Carlos falls in love with a hologram and almost kills himself over it. We’ve all been there, right?
12: PREHISTORY: Episode title made me think we were getting some Dinobots this episode. Sadbois
13: SWOOP: Hot Shot vs Megatron. Not the absolute hype of Bumblebee vs Megatron in the TF:Prime finale, but I’ll take it
14: OVERMATCH: For some reason I don’t remember Scavenger at all.
15: GALE: I do however very much remember THIS motorcycle boi. Things are about to get interesting with Sideways taking the stage.
16: CREDULOUS: Starscream gets the Star Saber, with a name like that, no wonder he wanted it
17: CONSPIRACY: Classic Decepticon infighting episode. Megatron provoking it himself was fun to watch. I love the dynamic/relationships the Cons have with each other in this series, it’s always entertaining,
18: TRUST: A great mirror of the last episode. Scavenger is way more important than I thought. Wonder why I forgot about him.
19: VACATION: This episode was a welcome break from the autobot v decepticon conflict. Nature was an unexpected opponent, it was cool to see the autobots try to save the kids while maintaining their disguise
20: REINFORCEMENT: My dude Blurr is here! Such an awesome design and great dynamic with Hotshot. Love a good Bromance
21: DECISIVE BATTLE: Finally, an answer to the age old question, What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Sky lasers!
22: VOW: The minicons finally did something! Where was this the whole rest of the show?
23: REBELLION: Oh wow, this is the best episode so far. Diving deep into the relationships the decepticons have with each other. In many moments, they feel like actual friends, and it humanizes them a lot. Really great character work here.
24: CHASE: Odd premise but FIRST GLIMPSE AT UNICRON LETS GOOO
25: TACTICIAN: YESSS! JETFIRE! MY BOI IS HERE!!! He was my favorite character out of all of them, lets see if he holds up
26: LINKUP: LETS GOOO! JET OPTIMUS TIME! As a kid, this was the coolest thing in the world to me. Can confirm...It still is!
27: DETECTION: Sideways true nature getting exposed. HOO boy we’re getting to the good stuff soon

30: RUNAWAY: “Your guardian star is very bright tonight” The Deceptions believe in Astrology. That wasn't on my bingo card! This episode gives me big Digimon vibes with them trying to hide the minocons in public.

 | Please read Part 1 here if you haven't.This was meant to come yesterday, but then Limbus Chapter 4 Part 2 grabbed me by the balls.IX The Nihility. An extremely passive Aeon that believes everything is worthless, everything about them is a total mystery. Those that approach its divine body, if they even find the coordinates, disappear. Simulated Universe implies that approaching, maybe even thinking about IX, induces apathy and mental breakdowns. IX ultimately represents nothingness - the dark side of the Universe that completes its balance, providing non-existence to existence. Aha once helped the Annihilation Gang try to assassinate it as a joke, but it unsurprisingly ended in failure after the Elation-enhanced Gang members vanished when approaching their coordinates. IX is the roman numeral for nine. WOW. It's almost certainly meant to be read as "nine", because of the way Device IX's name is structured. I looked for the potential significance of this number but like, nine being a number within the base 10 system we love so much basically means every culture in the universe sees it as significant. Followers\"Those running away from the past think no one understands their despair. When they finally take a breather, they'll find their future selves staring right at them with bloodshot eyes.\" Those who manage to share their mentality with IX sometimes earn a glance from them. When this happens, those who fall into despair have their physical bodies self-destruct and become something called a Self-Annihilator, made out of "true nothing". Interestingly, though this initially appears to be a grim fate, Self-Annihilators are somehow still alive and capable of thinking, and it seems implied they can revert to their original forms if they regain hope. Those, however, who remain steadfast in their beliefs become Doctors of Chaos, who are convinced they can 'heal' IX and make it see value in the universe. They do so by going around the universe preaching that you can derive meaning from it and doing crazy actions in the hopes of inspiring those around them. They also have a hobby of trying to cure Self-Annihilators, and they're pretty good at it. Device IX is the third Nihility faction, which is so mysterious its existence is straight up questionable. It's alleged to exist in the voids underneath all Reality. The only thing that can really be traced back to them is the "dark web" which allows for the trade of rare and illegal items, and probably other things as well. QlipothLet the fire that forged the bricks and the ones that laid the wall's foundations be known! The Preservation, known as the Firmament Arbiter by the Xianzhou. Their divine corpus is so huge, it has planets orbiting it. Qlipoth, at one point, was alerted to the "catastrophe of the Finality" and to prevent it, became building a large wall known as the Subspace Crystalline Barrier which isolates worlds from one another (or at least that's the IPC's narrative). They also built the Celestial Comet Wall and the Great Attractor Base, but we don't know what those are for yet. Qlipoth is very ancient, being a veteran from the Dusk Wars that resulted in the disappearance of all Leviathans. The IPC claims that the Dusk Wars and the Leviathan race ended as soon as Qlipoth ascended, but this doesn't appear to be the case. Furthermore, the IPC also maintains that Qlipoth is the first ever Aeon, which also doesn't appear to be the case (Oroboros says hi) Whenever Qlipoth strikes their hammer, the Subspace Crystalline Barrier expands, and the IPC has used this as a way of marking time in "Amber Eras", one for each hammer strike. However, the hammer strikes are inconsistent, so how long each AE lasts is different. That makes AEs a terrible way of keeping track of time, but everyone just accepts it anyway because the IPC is obsessed and arguing with the IPC is a really easy way to get on their bad side, which no one wants. On the side, most civilizations use their own timekeeping systems which are generally more accurate. In any case, it's currently 2158 AE, with 0 AE going all the way back to the "end" of the Dusk Wars, and 0-180 AE being a 'dark spot' with few historical records. The IPC's official stance is that there just isn't much information, but it seems more likely that they're withholding records from that time period, which would indicate something about it makes them or Qlipoth look bad. The Qliphoth is basically the "evil version" of the Kabbalistic Sefirot, the emanations through which the spirit of God reveals itself. That probably doesn't matter though, because most likely they chose it for the fact that the hebrew name קְלִיפּוֹת literally means 'shell'. Followers\"Seriously, out of everyone who had faced an Aeon, that old man was the calmest I've seen. Even Screwllum's gears squeaked when he saw Nous...\" When mortals first became aware of Qlipoth's wall, there were two reactions - the first was to imitate Qlipoth, going around the universe building stuff, and the other was to help them. The former became the Architects, who travel the universe building stuff and helping protect other civilizations. They were the ones who made Belobog's wall, core, and Engines of Creation. They must receive some implicit endorsement from Qlipoth, because they're able to tap into the Preservation's power to build their things. Generally, most people view the Architects as stubborn, but those protected by their abilities are eternally grateful and even join them. The other... So, a bunch of people, including geniuses Louis Fleming and Dongfang Qixing, decided to accrue a large number of construction materials to give to Qlipoth. They did this through trade, but quickly realized that in order to get what they needed, they'd have to specialize in more than just construction materials. Louis Fleming and Dongfang Qixing utilized their expertise to In 1388 AE, Louis Fleming and Dongfang Qixing decided to take things one step further and founded the Interastral Peace Corporation (IPC) together, and established an universal currency (credits) that facilitated trade between species, getting rid of themselves as the middleman and also making themselves fabulously wealthy in the process. The IPC integrated themselves into the economy of various civilizations, ruining those who refused to work with the IPC or utilize credits. As a result of this, the IPC became the most powerful entity in the universe and are very close to being its de-facto rulers - they display deference to only a handful of entities (such as the Genius Society), and even then only because they're too insular (and oftentimes protected by an Aeon) and useful to be manipulated or "coerced" into cooperating. Almost all transaction and trade in the universe is done with the oversight of the IPC and many, many civilizations rely on them for an economical backbone. They sponsor the creation of new inventions, research that benefits them, and produce their own products while also facilitating the sales of others'. They don't merely preside over trade, they may as well own half the universe. Again, if you cut ties with the IPC, you also lose access to these things. Safe to say, no matter how awful or inconvenient the IPC may get, going against them is simply not an option for all but the most privileged or stubborn few, and those arrogant enough to try anyway will learn the errors of their ways very quickly. Because the IPC is obsessed with the Preservation, it makes it very hard for anyone to actually study Qlipoth or go against them. Qlipoth appears to, on some level, approve of what they're doing, since an unknown Emanator of Preservation appeared in the IPC some time ago. However, they don't make use of the vast industrial quantities of construction materials piled up in the planets orbiting them that the IPC provided at all, so in a sense, what they're doing is actually pretty useless. But still, the IPC is fueled by absolute faith to their Aeon. Yaoshi The Abundance. Known by the Xianzhou Alliance hunters as the Plagues Author, and by the Xianzhou faithful as Sanctus Medicus. If we assume that Denizens of Abundance cannot exist without Yaoshi, then they're at minimum ~6900 (nice) years old, and possibly much, much older - the earliest Denizens of Abundance we can date having encountered the Xianzhou at 1200 SC. Yaoshi's primary goal is the extension and continuous growth of life in the universe. The lightcone Cornucopia implies that Yaoshi views life as a form of order, which opposes the chaos of death and the early universe. To achieve this, they 'bless' life in certain worlds, causing the sapient inhabitants to become Denizens of Abundance and also causing an outgrowth of powerful and equally long lived plant and animal life alike. Those blessings generally come in the form of great, immortal trees, whose fruit can grant long life. In general, Yaoshi prioritizes worlds and individuals who are experiencing great suffering and hardship. Yaoshi is the mortal enemy of Lan, although it's hard to say if the feelings are mutual. Yaoshi will never rest until all beings in the universe know the blessing of life, and Lan will never rest until Yaoshi has been killed in the final and greatest hunt. Yet, the cycle goes on for eternity. Yaoshi is a reference to the Chinese name of a Buddha called Bhaiṣajyaguru, which is a Buddha most commonly associated with healing and medicine, and is also pretty important, being up there with Shakyamuni (aka THE Buddha). He's a doctor who vowed to rid the world of pain and suffering. So yeah, makes sense. Followers\"The mercy of Sanctus Medicus, the Ambrosial Arbor's new growth. Disciples shall attain enlightenment together.\" Those blessed by Yaoshi gain remarkable biology - their cells and biological systems are placed in a state of perfect equilibrium, made possible through the ability for their cells to freely convert between differentiated cells and stem cells (builder cells, which can turn into any other kind of cell). This gives them the ability to effectively, live forever, as well as an extremely powerful healing factor. Though it does not altogether prevent death, it does allow for things such the regrowth of lost limbs and organs. The unfortunate fact of this arrangement is that the body when it is born provides a 'blueprint' for the blessing, making those born with congenital defects forever unable to correct them with surgery - the body will simply "heal" the "damage". However, there is another aspect to Yaoshi's blessing - upon fulfilling certain conditions, blessed individuals have a marked shift in biology, causing a form of 'evolution' that fundamentally alters their biology. This can fix things such as congenital defects but also essentially puts cells into overdrive, exacerbating existing biological processes of the species (such as molting for reptilian beings) and potentially causing insanity. For the Xianzhou natives, this is known as being 'stricken with mara'. Those who manage to survive the process with intelligence become known as the Denizens of Abundance who go around singing praises of Yaoshi. However, Yaoshi's blessing also causes fundamental deficits that force those long-life species into either constant suffering or constant conquest in other to offset these setbacks (such as the borisin's implied necessity to take over other worlds to house the hives necessary to create their biotechnology). The Denizens of Abundance love Yaoshi for making their lives "better", and are thus the sworn enemies of the Xianzhou Alliance, which also hates them and are seen (naturally) as blasphemers. Of course, there are also many civilizations that greatly regret contact with Yaoshi, such as of course, the Xianzhou Alliance. People who know of Yaoshi but are mortal and long for their blessing are known as Elixir Seekers, immortality hunters who go around the universe hoping to meet and be blessed by Yaoshi. Probably the most well-known Elixir Seekers were, indeed, the original Xianzhou fleet, which was sent out by an unnamed emperor into the stars in order to obtain immortality. Funnily, even though they did get it, they never returned to their homeworld. I wonder what it was like? The Disciples of Sanctus Medicus were the internal faction in the Xianzhou that worshipped Yaoshi and actively held contact with them, being led by an Emanator of Abundance named Shuhu. Yaoshi did speak to their disciples as well as other Denizens of Abundance and may have even spoken to the actively hostile Alliance as well, but the specifics of this are mired in legend and mystery, and so Yaoshi's true intentions regarding their followers are unclear. OroborosThe Mariners' Intemperance The Voracity. Wants to eat everything (eats planets), and was a Leviathan, which makes them about as old if not older than Qlipoth. Potentially, they are the only surviving Leviathan. That's about it. We don't know anything else. The Ouroboros is a well-known Western symbol with philosophical and alchemical significance that consists of a dragon or snake eating its own tail. Mostly it represents infinity. It was probably chosen though because Oroboros is the dedicated vore god. Cool! AhaLook upon the courtesans' extravagance. The Elation, known as Joyseeker to the Xianzhou. Hard to tell if it's true, but legend goes that Aha once actually reached the end of the Imaginary Tree. When they did so, they appeared to have gained some sort of advanced perception, and began to view the universe as one huge joke. Perhaps they realized they were made by a video game company? They certainly seem to have some sort of heightened awareness. In any case, though Aha claims and seems to believe that they only wish for others to see the humor in all things, their true purpose as an Aeon is that they serve as a catalyst of change, manipulating reality in extremely minor and undetectable ways until they butterfly effect massive events into happening. Although the displays of their power are minor compared to Qlipoth's massive wall or Lan's planet purging arrows, their effects on the universe far outweigh the others. They owe this success due to their closeness to mortals - unlike most Aeons who barely even bother communicating with others and are by nature mysterious, Aha displays a strong understanding of human society, as a matter of fact, they believe it is the exclusive privilege of intelligent beings to understand joy. This understanding allows them to mess around with people on a far more personal level than other Aeons do, even getting involved with other, separate factions if they believe it's funny enough. They're also especially talkative. Of course, sometimes they decide to be major instead, and do a little bit of trolling. Trolling attempts include blowing up half the Express and an entire planet after hiding out on it for a year disguised as a human (success), helping the Annihilator Gang assassinate IX (failure), trying to get a Noblesse Worm into the Genius Society (failure). And although the latter two appear like failures to us, I'm sure they got great enjoyment out of the bewildered reactions of those observing them. Aha is laughter, obviously, but it could also be a reference to various things including the 1980s Norwegian band, which composed Take on Me. That sounds stupid but that's Aha for you. FollowersWell, bye for now. Send my regards to the guys and girls in the tavern. Aha attracted a group of straightforward followers called the Masked Fools that go around the Universe doing a little bit of trolling, though more specifically they act as agents of change that have been responsible for starting riots and revolutions (including a notable one against Rubert I during the Emperor's War), and they're not above violence. They also maintain taverns and other places centered around having fun and doing trolling. Simultaneously, however, they also have a group of *anti-*followers called the Mourning Actors, who instead go around the universe being sad, noting the destruction of worlds and death, encouraging celibacy and abstinence, among other things, in the hopes of opposing the Elation. Aha thinks this is hilarious, and also recognizes tragedy as the flipside of comedy, so they purposefully enhanced them, allowing them to travel the stars. Although the Mourning Actors are mostly ignored by the universe, they possess an uncanny ability for detecting tragedy (probably Aha's fault); they visited Jarilo-VI when it was embroiled in the war against the Antimatter Legion, and they have some use as announcers for when worlds are destroyed or civilizations fall, often being the first to broadcast these events to the universe. Aha makes basically anything and anyone into an Emanator so long as they think it's funny, so it's not really worth noting here. That said, the one Emanator we do know of was a Noblesse Worm that they infused with super-intelligence to see if Nous would accept them into the Genius Society (they would not) FuliAnd finally, measure the world against yourself, and take all such things to heart. The Remembrance. Fuli's age's unknown, with records of them being essentially non-existent. Their ultimate goal is to preserve all of the universe's memories in order to facilitate "the rebirth of the universe", and they have the memories of every single living being in the universe, including those of other Aeons. They physically manifest before the occurrence of extremely significant events in the universe's history, and then vanish after obtaining whatever it was they needed from it. When this happens, they appear as a being made out of a mirror-like crystal. Though this has happened many times, their only recorded manifestation was at the end of a speech by the aging Louis Fleming, in his final public appearance. Fuli is named after a deity in the Shenxiao sect of Taoism. English sources for this are basically non-existent - I put the Chinese wikipedia article through DeepL and got the world's most sophisticated word salad and basically all I could gather is that he was the father of some bigshot emperor. Okay. FollowersMemes: The DNA of the soul Fuli utilized their power to enhance a specific group of mortals, allowing them to abandon their physical forms and live on as memetic lifeforms (not internet memes, ideas and behaviors that spread from person to person within a society, though HSR basically uses the term as "things that live in your brain"). This allows them to interact with a being's memories and subjective perception directly. It also allows them to freely travel between worlds without any physical effort on their part, which sure is neat! This faction became known as the Garden of Recollection, with the most active members being the Memokeepers, who preserve the memories of individuals considered significant. They also created Light Cone technology, which allows them to physically manifest and preserve the memory of an individual. Most Memokeepers prefer to keep themselves hidden, disguising themselves and harvesting the memories of others without ever being acknowledged. If a being possesses exceptional memories or qualities such as the Trailblazer, they might choose to manifest and communicate with them directly. Because the Garden of Recollection members are memetic lifeforms, they can only manifest to people who know about Fuli, the Remembrance, or associated concepts. If you literally don't know anything, you're inaccessible to them. After all, these spicy memes have not been passed on to you. The Garden of Recollection doesn't have just Memokeepers. It seems some members (or defectors?) known as Memosnatchers go around forcefully taking the memories of other individuals, potentially causing amnesia. Because the Messenger calls them "those thieves", it seems they're not looked highly upon by Fuli's other followers. Another faction in the Garden of Recollection that draws the ire of the Memokeepers are the Cremators, extremists who steal memories gathered by others and destroy the ones they consider to be useless and return the important ones. In doing so, they believe themselves to act as a sort of filter or curator for the memories of the Aeon, relieving them of their "burden". The stance of the Garden of Recollection is that every memory has value, so obviously the Cremators aren't seen in a positive light. In any case, the current objective of the Garden of Recollection is preserving the universe against the Destruction, believing that everyone can still live on through memories. Ultimately though, the Garden of Recollection likely existed long before Nanook's ascension, and their greatest goal is to fill Fuli's pure land with memories, which assists Fuli's own ultimate goal... which is unclear to us at the moment. IdrilaListen to the infant in the mirror. The Beauty, known to the Xianzhou as the Wondergazer, and also in some places as Anne Duray. Though mortals superficially interpret them as a god of beauty, Idrila's true nature revolves around the realm of perception - your conscious qualia (sight, smell, taste, etc), your ability to reason, and the values instilled upon you by your own personal circumstances. The intersection of these attributes is what creates the subjective idea of 'beauty'. In other words, beauty exists in the eye of the beholder. Idrila cannot create beauty. Instead, they can manipulate these attributes to embody something that's always going to be beautiful to the observer, independently of their tastes. A memory bubble even implies that Idrila is even capable of granting sapience to unintelligent species, creating the conditions for them to be able to observe 'beauty'. Idrila, essentially, allows beings to "observe" the universe in its purest form. This causes the people exposed to Idrila's power to frequently become intensely obsessed to the point of insanity, and many legends describe those affected by them as committing devastating acts for Idrila's sake - something which gave them a large amount of pleasure. They created civilizations and tore apart people who were in love just by existing. It's probably safe to say that no one knows what Idrila really looked like, but it was always the most beautiful thing they've seen. One day, Idrila just up and disappeared. Adios. The Mirror Holders believe that Idrila 'died' and shattered into many pieces, and could return if those pieces are gathered again. The Knights of Beauty believe that Idrila is still very much alive, just... hiding out somewhere, I guess. I tried to figure out what the name "Idrila" might be derived from, but I couldn't find anything. The Japanese and Chinese characters are phonetic. Anne comes from Anna which comes from the hebrew Hannah which means grace or favor, as in "God graced me with a child". Duray is a significant royal family in France and Scotland which derives from an old French word that means king. So like, King/Queen of Grace I guess. Cool. Followers\"If I win, please admit that Idrila the Beauty is the most beautiful of all!\" - Argenti Among Idrila's followers (of which is implied that there are many of), the most tame are the Knights of Beauty, which run around the universe telling everyone how awesome their Aeon is (kind of a trend). They practice a chivalric code which basically says that you can only be worthy of the Aeon GF if you grind hard everyday to become the greatest gigachad of them all. Because of this, other factions in the universe regard them as not having a whole lot of faith in their Aeon. I mean, if you make your entire dynamic a competition to see which of you is the most deserving of getting your god's attention, you're basically saying that your god would never care about most people, right? Only the best ones. Then again, maybe Idrila really is like that. Idrila, did, however, have more faithful followers, the Mirror Holders, who possess artifacts named Mirrors of Transcendence. These artifacts hold within them some level of Idrila's power, which allows the wielder to project an observer's subjective perception of the most ideal beauty outwards into reality. Usually, the Mirror Holders seem to use this to indoctrinate new people into their thirst cult. A Mirror Bubble implies that the Mirror Holders may also be Emanators, but maybe it's just one person who happens to be both an Emanator of Beauty and a Mirror Holder. Though the Knights of Beauty hold the delusion that their Aeon GF will someday come back, and I guess decide which one among them is the most fabulous, the Mirror Holders have a different perspective. They believe Idrila 'died' because of society developing differing subjective views on beauty, shattering them into pieces. As a result, they work to make sure society has an unified view of aesthetics, while also hunting down the remainder of Idrila's artifacts. They believe these combined factors will allow their god to return, ushering in an age of harmony where everyone is really infatuated with Idrila all the time. I guess that sounds like heaven to them. TayzzyronthTayzzyronth... Tayzzy█ronth... Ta█yzzy█ronth... Ta█yzz██y█ronth█... Ta█... █yzzy███ron█th███... The Propagation. Known as the Swarm Author by the Xianzhou and the Imperator Insectorum in some places. Tayzzyronth was a very, very lonely beetle who, after getting fed up with being all alone, appears to have developed the ability to self-duplicate endlessly, ascending into short-lived Aeonhood afterwards. What resulted was one of the most severe catastrophes to affect the universe, the Swarm Disaster. Worlds were invaded and turned into massive hives that to this day are uninhabitable despite the loss of their master. Tayzzyronth's clones slaughtered all living beings in their path, bred endlessly, and moved on to the next world, all in blistering speeds. The scale of destruction was so massive that it actually worried the IPC for maybe the first time since the Emperor's War. Tayzzyronth seemed close to unstoppable and posed a very real risk of destroying the entire universe, when the sheer intensity of their threat caused an incredibly rare occurrence in the universe - multiple Aeons put their personal missions and differences aside and teamed up to get rid of Tayzzyronth once and for all. We don't know the specifics of Tayzzyronth's death, but it involved them being encased in an organic prison, which appears to have deprived the rest of the Swarm of the ability to reproduce. After this, something killed them, which put an end to the Swarm Disaster for good. However, just because Tayzzyronth's dead doesn't mean the Swarm disappeared completely, or that they may never return. The surviving members of the Swarm managed to evolve into different beings, the worlds converted into hives by the Swarm are still to this day impossible to live in, and fragments of the Imperator Insectorum's prison and body still buzz with activity and an energy that makes it very possible they might still return. Even though Tayzzyronth lived for only a tiny amount of time compared to most Aeons, their destructive impact on the universe cannot be understated. After all, it might even be possible that they indirectly led to Nanook's ascension, due to the Swarm's attempted takeover of Adlivun. Tayzzyronth didn't seem to have followers, much less Emanators - it seems their own clones were all they ever needed. I actually feel kinda bad for them. Beetle just wanted a friend. Can You Believe It, just like Idrila this is another name with no real source. Personally, I think it might just be completely made up, perhaps made to sound like something a bug would make. MythusThe Waves as they Enter the Dream The Enigmata. Like Qlipoth and Fuli, Mythus too believes that there is some sort of calamity approaching the universe. Their approach to it, however, is a bit different - the Enigmata sees the obfuscation of the past and of observable facts to create a 'mist of uncertainty' that obscures a 'narrative drive' determining the Universe's fate, which would allow everyone to escape that calamity. Of course, since the Erudition directly wants to observe the Universe and solve it, that would only ensure the opposite, which makes them Mythus' direct enemy. From latin Mythus. Means myth. Comes from Greek μῦθος (muthos), means tale, myth, legend. It's not that deep. FollowersTo achieve their goal, Mythus appears to random mortals already teetering on the edge of obscurity and 'inspires' them into becoming even crazier than they likely already were. The Riddlers specialize in obfuscating language, whereas Mythus' own personal Emanators, the History Fictionologists, mess with historical records and memories, making certain historical events more confusing, harder to understand, or just straight up inaccessible.The items created by Mythus' followers possess the supernatural ability to directly affect history, even though history is more or less an abstract concept and those are physical items. As such, it can be assumed that Mythus is granting them their power in this way, which makes them one of the more proactive Aeons. HooHThe Tipping of the Balance The Equilibrum. They merged their consciousness with the logic of the universe itself, hoping to attain perfect universal equilibrium. While many attempt to outsmart HooH and make things unbalanced in their favor, HooH has already accounted for them, and victory is impossible. Even if something is unbalanced now, it'll become balanced eventually, and HooH's patience is unmatched by any other Aeon. HooH's English name is made up and meant to appear symmetrical, as is the case for HooH's original Chinese name, which is 互. This character means "mutually" or "reciprocally" or "intertwining". It was probably chosen just because it looks symmetrical from the top down, but that last meaning does have the added bonus of fitting with the fact HooH is woven into the fabric of the universe. FollowersLong Arm Those who like the cut of HooH's gib become dedicated to balancing the universe, the Arbitrators, who decided they'd try and get rid of extreme binary concepts, placing everything in balance. But because they're mortal, they don't have the great big picture view HooH has, and so they constantly mess up, having to correct their problems in successive "patches". An Arbitrator talks to you when you reach the first Trial of the Equilibrium, and it seems they possess the ability to alter the entire universe in a scale that's incomparable to the followers of other Aeons. It may be because HooH has somehow managed to integrate themselves into the universe much further than any other Aeon has, and that might explain why Aeons tend to be opposed by those with equalizing concepts, and out of control Aeons tend to get the shaft. Think about it. Tayzzyronth was a threat, but several Aeons believe Nanook is already going to destroy the universe. Why don't they team up again and kick their ass if so? Well, because they're balanced about it. Nanook's rate of destruction is slow and easy to counter enough that unlike Tayzzyronth, they can't take over the entire universe in years. Therefore, in a sense, they already have a place in equilibrium. For every planet-destroying campaign that takes centuries, Yaoshi and the Architects have already protected 5 other worlds. There's no need for something, or someone, to push them towards correcting that balance. EnaI only survived because the spirit of \"fuck it we ball\" burned brighter than the \"it's so over\" around me. The Order. An Aeon that was absorbed by Xipe due to conceptual overlap when the latter ascended, which is safe to say, a pretty definitive death (though perhaps some part of Ena lives on through Xipe? I mean, they are a plural Aeon after all) Ena's only known group of followers are the Beyond the Sky Choir, a choir group that made songs praising the Order. When Ena was absorbed, they effectively disappeared, no longer having a god to worship. However, the Choir audience did record some of their performances into special disks, that could only be played with unique Phonographs of Order. The problem is, the last Phonograph was lost during Emperor Rubert 1's campaigns, so nobody can ever listen to them again. As a result, this Path is deader than dead. Maybe the energy's still accessible, but with no Aeon, no followers, and no extant artifacts, it might as well not exist. Ena is a character from the web animation series ENA made by Peruvian artist and animator Joel- wait no. Actually, I don't know where the English translators got the name "Ena" from, but their original name is 太一 or Taiyi, which is the supreme deity of Heaven worshipped during the Chinese Han Dynasty. There's a lot to Taiyi, but I'm just going to ignore all of it because it was probably actually chosen because the name literally means "Great Oneness" or "Great Unity". LongI didn't know what to put here. The Permanence. A Chinese dragon thing, Long died ages ago, but we don't know how. Before they died though, they left descendants in the form of Long's Scions, or the Vidyadhara, which possess the power of the Permanence in their very biology. Because of this, the Vidyadhara have a very peculiar characteristic - when they reach the natural end of their lifespans, they pull a Turritopsis dohrnii and regress back into an infantile stage, effectively making them ageless. Of course, the Vidyadhara that 'reincarnates' loses all memories of their previous self, making the newly reborn Vidyadhara a different individual altogether, though Vidyadhara culture does encourage seeking a greater connection to your past incarnation. It's also possible they might be able to experience some aspects of their previous lives through dreams. Vidyadhara, however, cannot reproduce. This means that their numbers are limited and losses to their population (through unnatural means) are permanent. Frankly as far as I'm concerned, this basically means Vidyadhara extinction is inevitable, as statistically speaking they probably wouldn't be able to avoid dying through accidents or intentional acts forever. Currently the vast majority of Vidyadhara live among the Xianzhou Alliance, and it's rumored that those among them that fulfill certain conditions and pass specific rites can return to the form of a dragon. The High Elder of the Vidyadhara receives strict training in order to one day become the highest among them, the Imbibitor Lunae. Another thing about Vidyadhara. The fact the Permanence's power flows through their cells allows individuals who have harvested Vidyadhara bone marrow to transplant some of that power into their own bodies, provided that they have the right ingredients to reactivate the stem cells. For regular mortals this only results in a short lived burst of power before their immune system destroys the transplanted Vidyadhara cells, resulting in a catastrophic regression that would most likely lead to death for most individuals. However, for long-life species blessed by Yaoshi, Long's power can actually stabilize the explosive evolutionary process... allowing those stricken with mara to retain their sanity. The cost is only a little murder. Long is the Chinese name for the dragon (or specifically the Chinese dragon which is different from the Western perception). WOW! However, dragons do have great significance in Chinese folklore and culture and were worshipped, so this is a fine name. They also have associations with water, which is probably why the Vidyadhara are also associated with water. TerminusThe Shapeless PrinceThe Finality. If we ignore bits of CBT2 that were removed upon release and now exist in a canonical limbo, this Aeon is the one we basically know the least about. I mean sure they've been mentioned more than Oroboros has, but we at least know what Oroboros is, and what their objectives are. Terminus, though? Well, besides the fact that the IPC (and maybe Qlipoth) oppose their goals... we know the name "Terminus" and the Path of "the Finality", and that's it. They encountered Akivili at some point, so they're active somewhere, but that doesn't tell us much. Terminus does appear to share a bit of a concept with an important HI3 character, the Herrscher of Finality, but there doesn't seem to be any direct connection, and finding actual summaries and information on stuff that happens toward the latter half of HI3's story that aren't too short or badly written to be useful is impossible. I'd have to play the game and read all the side-content, and frankly that'd take me weeks, and this post already took a long time to write as it is. So we'll take Terminus for what the game tells us about them, which is nothing. Terminus is the Roman name of a god that presided over boundary stones (his name also refers to those stones), which were meant to mark, you know, boundaries. Like the limits of a region or an area that couldn't really be represented by natural landmarks. Essentially, he was the end of one place and the start of another. Considering that Fuli's lore hints at a cyclical nature to the universe, this is an interesting name. In Chinese, though, their name is different. It's 末王, which literally means "king of the end". Quite the powerful name. And that's the end of the Aeon section. Because the manuscript for the mortal characters hasn't been written, it'll take a while longer to come out. Probably a few weeks. If I end up finishing it too close to the release of the remaining Companion Quests, it'll have to wait until after. |

Hello everyone! Hello! Welcome back to my journey through this series on book seven now. It's been, what, two months? I'm pretty excited to get back into it. Lord of Chaos was quite the trip. I loved how it was getting much more into the political realities of ruling these very different people. And what an amazing, explosive, finale with the Battle of Dumai's Wells. Wow. That was one of the best fantasy battles I've read, I think. The Ashaman making their first appearance on the battlefield was truly something. They are far more powerful and deadly than anyone could have foreseen. How will the world react when they learn of the Ashaman and their deadly, all encompassing destructive power? And how will Elaida react when she learns of what happened? Or the rebel Aes Sedai? No longer are they the most powerful people on the block. The Ashaman defeated them, laid them low. Rand could probably take on the White Tower itself now, though I doubt he really wants to do that.
We're starting here with Elaida in the prologue which is a good idea, much like how we started with her at the beginning of the fifth book. She's getting a nice little summary of events to get us, the audience, up to speed on what's going on in the world, again, much like the fifth book. She's gotten word that Rand has been captured. Of course she hasn't yet gotten word that he's escaped or what the Black Tower can truly do. She only sends fifty sisters after them, a dangerously low number, but she's underestimating them.
I do like her reaction to finding out that the rebels made Egwene the Amyrlin. It's a pretty bonkers move and I like her reasoning. They are only doing it so that, if they lose, Egwene can take the fall and the others can pretend like they were just being mislead. Not that Elaida would believe that if that's what they actually did.
She is struck by a foretelling and sees the White Tower whole again, so she assumes that means she wins. Of course, that could also mean she's going to lose. So, you know, who knows?
We then go to Sevanna as she's losing the battle pretty badly. We get to relive this pretty crazy battle scene yet again from a different point of view, essentially. It's just kind of recap. Still, it's a great battle, not going to deny that. She's also holding the fact that several of the other Wise Ones killed another Wise One over them to control them. I like that.
We see Alviarin taking commands from Mesaana. I can't recall if Mesaana has played much of a role in the books up until now. I don't remember her in the books at all until this point, tbh. So nice to see a new Forsaken doing things. She's apparently hiding amongst the Tower. Mesaana also teaches Alviarin how to open gateways, which is kind of a big deal. Not sure why she did that.
There's the inevitable conclusion to Morgase's incredibly stupid and out of character action of going to the Children of the Light. This is the only plot that I do not like from Lord of Chaos and I continue to dislike it here. By not following his best interest and immediately executing Morgase on the spot, as he should have, Pedron Niall gets himself assassinated. I can't really say I care too much. Should have seen that one coming. Eamon Valda takes over after his part in the plot and it's hard to take any of this part seriously because it shouldn't have happened because Morgase shouldn't have done this incredibly stupid thing.
Finally we see Gawyn trying to survive with his little group of Younglings and fighting a little skirmish with surviving Shaido. He also spots a sister who survived, so he's going to try to make it back to the White Tower.
Starting the book proper, we're still in the aftermath of the battle. Unfortunately we're with Perrin, but that's ok because nothing very interesting is happening anyway. I like the set up here of this group as a powder keg. There's all these wildly different groups that absolutely do not like each other, in some cases, hate each other. The Two Rivers people, Mayeners, Cairhienin, Aiel, Wise Ones, Aes Sedai, and Ashamon. They all glare at each other wish suspicion. I'm wondering if this will all explode in their faces without the unifying force of their loyalty to Rand. They may still kill each other.
There's also the interesting point about the Three Oaths that I remembered talking about before. The Aes Sedai NEED to be in danger to fight. They can't harm someone except to protect their own life. Thus the Aes Sedai walked out into the battle so they could fight, disobeying Perrin's orders. I like that it's spelled out here and it makes me wonder if, perhaps, we're going to be talking about the idea of the Three Oaths and their place in Rand's empire. I doubt he's going to have anything similar with the Ashaman. Perhaps he'll want the Aes Sedai to do away with them entirely. The rebel Aes Sedai already can't get anyone to swear to the Three Oaths without the rod, so perhaps, if they win, they just simply won't bother.
Rand decides to give control of the prisoner Aes Sedai to the Wise Ones rather than the Ashaman, probably because he doesn't really trust other magic users right now. The Wise Ones do have the ability to use magic, but they don't feel like they're magic users because they don't use it very much. He also has Alanna heal him because, counter-intuitively, she is the one he can trust the most. Because she non-consensually made Rand a warder, she has a vested interest in making sure he doesn't get hurt so she doesn't get hurt herself.
Mazrim Taim wants Rand to have a full Ashaman as a guard and Rand chooses one at random, seemingly. I like how Taim tries to talk him out of it, but it only deepens Rand's resolve to choose him. I wonder how much of that is reverse psychology. Taim has to know that Rand doesn't trust him, so arguing against him only makes Rand want to dig in against him.
So that's it for now. Not a super exciting start, but it definitely does the job: gets the principal characters and world events in place, reminding us of what's going on. And also dealing with the immediate aftermath of that explosive battle. The effects of the battle will be rippling out to the rest of the world soon, I'm sure, and they will have pretty huge, long lasting impacts. I'm excited to see where that goes.

Still, it's a great battle, not going to deny that. She's also holding the fact that several of the other Wise Ones killed another Wise One over them to control them. I like that.
We see Alviarin taking commands from Mesaana. I can't recall if Mesaana has played much of a role in the books up until now. I don't remember her in the books at all until this point, tbh. So nice to see a new Forsaken doing things. She's apparently hiding amongst the Tower. Mesaana also teaches Alviarin how to open gateways, which is kind of a big deal. Not sure why she did that.
There's the inevitable conclusion to Morgase's incredibly stupid and out of character action of going to the Children of the Light. This is the only plot that I do not like from Lord of Chaos and I continue to dislike it here. By not following his best interest and immediately executing Morgase on the spot, as he should have, Pedron Niall gets himself assassinated. I can't really say I care too much. Should have seen that one coming. Eamon Valda takes over after his part in the plot and it's hard to take any of this part seriously because it shouldn't have happened because Morgase shouldn't have done this incredibly stupid thing.
Finally we see Gawyn trying to survive with his little group of Younglings and fighting a little skirmish with surviving Shaido. He also spots a sister who survived, so he's going to try to make it back to the White Tower.
Starting the book proper, we're still in the aftermath of the battle. Unfortunately we're with Perrin, but that's ok because nothing very interesting is happening anyway. I like the set up here of this group as a powder keg. There's all these wildly different groups that absolutely do not like each other, in some cases, hate each other. The Two Rivers people, Mayeners, Cairhienin, Aiel, Wise Ones, Aes Sedai, and Ashamon. They all glare at each other wish suspicion. I'm wondering if this will all explode in their faces without the unifying force of their loyalty to Rand. They may still kill each other.
There's also the interesting point about the Three Oaths that I remembered talking about before. The Aes Sedai NEED to be in danger to fight. They can't harm someone except to protect their own life. Thus the Aes Sedai walked out into the battle so they could fight, disobeying Perrin's orders. I like that it's spelled out here and it makes me wonder if, perhaps, we're going to be talking about the idea of the Three Oaths and their place in Rand's empire. I doubt he's going to have anything similar with the Ashaman. Perhaps he'll want the Aes Sedai to do away with them entirely. The rebel Aes Sedai already can't get anyone to swear to the Three Oaths without the rod, so perhaps, if they win, they just simply won't bother.
Rand decides to give control of the prisoner Aes Sedai to the Wise Ones rather than the Ashaman, probably because he doesn't really trust other magic users right now. The Wise Ones do have the ability to use magic, but they don't feel like they're magic users because they don't use it very much. He also has Alanna heal him because, counter-intuitively, she is the one he can trust the most. Because she non-consensually made Rand a warder, she has a vested interest in making sure he doesn't get hurt so she doesn't get hurt herself.
Mazrim Taim wants Rand to have a full Ashaman as a guard and Rand chooses one at random, seemingly. I like how Taim tries to talk him out of it, but it only deepens Rand's resolve to choose him. I wonder how much of that is reverse psychology. Taim has to know that Rand doesn't trust him, so arguing against him only makes Rand want to dig in against him.
So that's it for now. Not a super exciting start, but it definitely does the job: gets the principal characters and world events in place, reminding us of what's going on. And also dealing with the immediate aftermath of that explosive battle. The effects of the battle will be rippling out to the rest of the world soon, I'm sure, and they will have pretty huge, long lasting impacts. I'm excited to see where that goes.

It's not even a remake, we don't even have some magical unbeatable cartoon to compare it to, it's simply just this really depressing sequel of a story that ended perfectly. Perfectly. Understand? It was done perfectly, it was the One, it was the One remaining classic, it was an anomaly of untouched flawlessness. But the same exact people came back to look the same exact way and do the same exact shit, only in the shittiest way imaginable as 93 year olds just to sing the universe's most underwhelming version of "one way or another" (???) like that's not even relevant to Your time, to Our time, to the Sanderson Sister's time, to these Kids Today's time, wow as if trying to hurt all of our feelings and make us know once and for all that we really do exist in the lower hell dimension version of a past universe or timeline and everything we ever knew and loved really is gone forever.

- These ancient witches who were last activated in the 90's are pretty up to date on the modern lingo this time around. Like even more so than me. I had to google certain terms the black-haired one was using to get hip with it according to her representation of my own society. Granted that's not saying too much because I live under a rock, but I mean still.
- "Pure," idiots. You can just say "Pure," when a child asks you to define a "Virgin." Pure of Heart, Innocent, I mean there are many. Stop prolonging the joke and snorting like perverted pigs, are you stupid? Are you trying to make us stupid? Books sat all around the Choir, who were mental hospital patients magically shaped as ravens. I was the first to take human form, as my raven's eye spotted what I hoped was ours. It was one book among many, but it was also Circe's diary. As a man I could thumb the pages.
We had come in through the open window of the room of the manor that held so many books. I'd noticed the old diary right away and begun to read it while the ravens shifted from void travelers to humans.
I frowned, realizing it was just a record of all of her lovers. An impressive body count of seventy-seven, I noted her notation on the last page. Then a chill ran through my blood. The sorcerer in me knew something about them.
"Cory, what sort of magic can be divided into parts, among lovers?" I asked.
"I have no idea, my Lord." Cory looked at the book. "A diary?"
"Yes. Circe's diary, but I suspect it is more than that. She had a second use for these creeps. I bet we could find something." I decided. The fortunate find was only a promise. I had no idea if there was useful magic or not. Whatever magic she had hidden would be worth hiding, obviously.
The others shambled past me and Cory in their open straight jackets and bathrobes and hospital gowns. They had all sorts of weapons: clubs, a broken bottle, a claw pincher and an uzi. I had my staff, carved from the unstable and formless magic between worlds into a proper weapon.
We needed our weapons, dried zombies stood in our way, shuffling among the books. Magical slaves, living corpses. They were still dangerous and had to be destroyed.
For a moment the dead stood in our path, their eyes shimmering blankly in the shadows. They regarded us, the intruders, then began to shuffle towards us. I felt a chill of revulsion at the sight of corpses walking and gagged on their stench. I'd seen far worse, but one never truly gets used to such things.
A loud rapid clapping noise and the merry tinkle of bullet casings erupted from the uzi. It was pretty ineffective. The rest of the Choir brandished their weapons and strode forward like the maniacs they were. Even Scarlet was in the mood to kill something and she tore apart more than one of the shambling dead.
She looked at me and I caught a gleam in her eye of psychotic delight. Some nervous feeling always rose up in me since the first time I had met her. Somehow the shift from a helpless hitchhiker to a hook handed murderer always caught me off guard.
When we'd finished killing the dead we sorted our way out from the books.
Time seemed distorted. How things played out always felt surreal as we partially entered entirely different worlds than our own. There was always a dreamlike perspective, as though I were merely an actor under observation rather than a participant. I often had to remind myself of the grim reality I was trapped in.
I had lost count of the rare artifacts we had stolen for Aureus and the worlds we had invaded and brought death and horror to. I loathed all of it, feared there was no salvation after my numerous misdeeds. What choice did I have?
I led the Choir through the manor, watching myself do so.
There were other servants, just as ghoulish as the dried zombies. We killed everything we met until we got to the master bedroom. The safe was too big to take with us.
"Cater?" I asked our safecracker. She was also totally nuts. Her wild eyes rolled around and beheld the safe as though pretending she hadn't noticed it. Her fake response of joy wasn't really fake, she was actually happy.
"Gots." She whispered and went to work on the safe. The Choir stood around breathing too loudly for her and drooling. Eventually she got it open and took out the green gem. It sparkled evilly. Circe's Emerald.
"Let's go." I said and we all returned to the books and found the ġedwimor was shimmering visibly where we could revert to ravens that could fly home. We leapt through it and into flight. Our rave cast the shadow of one great bird. The magics welcomed us, living and enchanted creatures that we were, and insane. Across worlds and time we flew back to our home.
At Dellfriar we arrived. Except I had finally found my way out. Aureus somehow knew before I did that I held the key to my escape. It was in Circe's Diary that the clue existed. There was more to her spell than turning the enlightened into ravens.
I dreamed of the unkindness of ravens watching me. Cory asked me in the dream:
"How many pigs are on her island?"
I began to count them and I took a step with each number. By the seventy-seventh step I was asleep again, within the dream. I looked at my sleeping form in the dreamscape, surrounded by pigs and watched by ravens. I was looking down from a great distance, it suddenly seemed, and then I was looking up from far below.
"Where are we?" I asked Cory. I stared at my crow and he seemed to be smiling. It was the dream that made it seem so.
"Seventy-seven steps to the bottom, my Lord." Cory advised me. "And each must be counted."
"Those were pigs." I pointed out.
"Pigs that were once men. Each of them descended further, marking a fraction of the way. Love is a journey, a dreamy journey, ever downwards." Cory chirped.
"What about the exact number?" I wondered. To a crow, numbers were more symbolic than literal.
"It's just a number of stairs leading into the dream lands. It means nothing." Cory sounded playful. Cory had learned that numbers were literal to humans. It amused him that I was confused.
"But the number of Circe's lovers?" I asked.
"Of course, they are permanently under her control. They made a bargain, surrendering their bodies. Each of them counts as the descent to the bottom. Their blood and hers is mixed. The blood of her lover's, her blood, they are helpless to her will." Cory explained. I was glad I had read so many books with my crow that we both knew the answers when we met in Dream.
"Where is she?" I sat up from the blue clouds and looked around. As I focused I found I was on an island. What I imagined Circe's prison to look like.
Someone spoke to me:
"You use my spell on yourself. A wereraven, part of a rave of lunatics just like yourself. You have stolen my emerald?" I heard the soft voice of a delicate female. I turned around and saw her there. She was staring at me, her eyes looked curious and a little hurt.
"I stole it for Aureus. They're making a weapon, and your emerald is a suitable component." I explained.
"Aureus?" Circe seemed somehow both amused and irritated at-once. "Neither a man nor a woman. Neither a human nor a creature of magic. Not a young soul nor an old one."
"The same." I sighed in sympathetic exasperation.
"You work for me now. You will steal my emerald from this weapon. You will seal Aureus in a moment stolen from the wheel upon which the ages turn. A moment among the aeons that never was and never will be." Circe smiled strangely for me. I sensed that to her victims she seemed irresistible. I found her charms to be crocodilian.
"You are right." I agreed with her. "We have searched for a long time for a way to defeat Aureus."
"Was the answer..." Circe started to ask a question and then paused for emphasis: "Right in front of you all along?"
"We thought that dying might be the answer. If we were dead we couldn't serve Aureus." Cory sounded cheerful and perky, like he was telling a very funny joke.
"Life." Circe swore. "Life is the answer. You are life from me. You wield my powers with ease, Greatson." Circe's smile looked maternal. It occurred to me that I was immune to her charms because I was her descendant only after I heard her say those words.
"You're my Lord's ancestor?" Cory cleverly surmised. "No wonder he is so valuable to Aureus. I thought it was strange that such a powerful sorcerer required help from my Lord!" Cory cawed with hilarity. The revelation held layers of humor for my crow, who felt like explaining further: "You know, because it is so funny. My Lord would be the last choice of most competent magic users. We've routinely made mistakes that could only be made during the hour that is reserved for amateurs!"
Circe tried to hide her amusement. "I'm sure my Greatson is learning. Even I managed to make a few embarrassing mistakes in my youth."
"Really?" I asked.
"No." Circe smiled. "I'm just trying to make you feel better."
"We shall know the plan?" I interrupted. Circe was standing before me, the short distance between us meant nothing in Dream. She looked serious as she drew upon my eyelids. I could watch her do so with my eyes closed.
Then I awoke in the dream I had descended from. I was again among the pigs and the ravens. From there I shook myself awake in the real world. For a moment I was tempted to shake myself again. Fear that I might wake up in a higher place from which I wouldn't be able find sleep made me hesitate.
"Do you recall the dream we have had, my Lord?" Cory asked.

Ok, now that we’re a few weeks after release I have a few questions about the lore.
1: What is the specific connection between the Zonai and the Sheika? Rauru’s third eye is obviously what the Sheika modeled their symbol after, and the Yiga took that and flipped it to symbolize their opposition to them. But WHY did the Sheika choose to use Rauru’s third eye? What is the connection? Is that the source of his “magic”? Is that the gateway to the goddess? Help me out here people.
2: If Rauru and Mineru were the last surviving Zonai, and the Calamity depicted in the “10,000 years ago” story follows the events of the imprisoning war, how does the ancient hero (as depicted by the ancient hero armor) have such strong Zonai features, but no Zonai features have survived to modern Hylians?
3: Where the hell is Queen Sonia, and King Rauru’s offspring? They had to have had children prior to the events of the imprisoning war, if the heavily implied relation to Zelda is to be believed, yet not a single mention of them in the story.
