2023.06.09 16:48 Heraclius628 My son just watched the OT for the first time and I rewatched for first time in years (long observations)
I'm a child of the 80s-90s. I grew up with Star Wars, was legitimately obsessed with it from ages 3-7 me and my brothers endlessly rewatched the OT on VHS tapes in those years. I remember being so excited for the theatrical re-releases and later the prequels.
My son (4) doesn't watch a lot of non-educational TV or movie, partly we don't show him much, but also he tends to be easily frightened by any tension or scary villains. I also thought that maybe the violence would be something he wasn't really prepared for, none of his books or tv shows really shows graphic deaths. The worst thing he's seen are clips from TV News about the war in Ukraine which isn't often.
Last year I picked up some old children's books from my parents, and I had a stack of books that were the Star Wars read along books (that used to come with a small vinyl record) for the OT and a Star Wars ABC books. I would occasionally read these books at bedtime and my son gradually became enthusiastic about them, so we would get other Star Wars books from the library, most of those were either Prequel-era or even now Sequel-era stuff which he seemed to like and get. I think what's important is that going into actually watching the films he had been "spoiled" somewhat on the basic storylines and characters, like he knew Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, but honestly I think at his age he doesn't follow stories that well, so knowing all the characters and places upfront probably helped him enjoy it more I think?
So I thought with this I would just sort of give some observations about my son's experience and also my own re-watching the films for the first time in years. I had the Blu-ray Special Editions that were released maybe 5-6 years ago?
A New Hope
On rewatch this is by far my favorite, it's funny, gritty, action packed. It is pretty violent, dead bodies seen in the first firefight on the ship, Vader force choking people, Owen and Beru's burnt corpses, but overall this didn't seem to be harmful to my son, we did talk a bit about it being a war and that people were 'hurt'. He seemed most affected by the death of Obi-wan, and kept asking where he went. My son seemed to like Luke and R2-D2. I will say a lot of the audio was kind of uneven on this edition, I had trouble hearing dialog and my son can't read subtitles so I was explaining stuff and then the action or score would be super loud.
I think that the special edition CGI additions are the weakest in the trilogy, particularly the ones on Tatooine. IMO they don't add much and look fairly cheesy by today's standards. To be fair a lot of the Cantina alien costumes also don't look the best now in HD resolution.
Sadly one of the areas I feel suffers the most now is the continuity with all the Prequels and series. Like the way Obi-wan talks about the past makes it sound like 30-40+ years ago when it was really more like 18 and, now with the Kenobi show, things like him meeting Darth Vader was <10 years ago. I'm only 40 and events 10 years ago feels like nothing. So Vader's line "I sense something; a presence I've not felt since..." just feels like doesn't carry the weight it should. The Jedi shouldn't be an "ancient religion" they were still be hunted down in recent years and Han would have been alive when the Jedi were fighting in the Clone Wars I would think? I kind of think George Lucas backed the franchise into a corner a bit by setting the Prequels too close to the beginning of the OT, I get why to somewhat explain Luke and Leia's ages. I dunno, I would have rather ret-conned them to be mid-20s or something.
Empire Strikes Back
Very enjoyable still. Son liked the Hoth battle scenes, loves AT-ATs. Kind of less interested in some of the Dagobah planet and Yoda scenes. He didn't understand at all what was happening in the Dark side cave which was pretty scary for him, eventually the explanation that stuck was "It was a robot Darth Vader, not the real Darth Vader" that Luke killed. He had little or no commentary on the Han-Leia romance, something I remember feeling cringey about it as a boy that thought girls were like the enemy, he doesn't seem to care, but doesn't like it either as far as I can tell. My son was shocked when Vader cut off Luke's hand, because the Read Along picture books sanitize this as "Vader slashed Luke's lightsaber away" or something more PG. These are violent movies!
I don't remember as much additional scenes or CGI in this one, the old models of Star Destroyers and Rebel ships looked amazingly good I thought, I think Executor and generally imperial navy scenes overall are so good still. I think they added a few shots of the Falcon flying around Cloud City and maybe the snow monster scene looked a bit cheesy now?
Something that struck me on this rewatch in particular was how good the lightsaber duel between Vader and Luke was. I always remembered it as Luke losing pretty badly. Which is true, but he seriously held is own for most of the fight, counterattacking even getting a few glancing blows on Vader. The fight was way more intense than I remember it being and super fun to watch especially with how later jedi duels in the prequel movies get a lot of praise. This really held up in my opinion.
Which is impressive with what we now know Vader to be, like the greatest Jedi warrior ever. Again some continuity stuff bothers me more about the prequels, especially in Kenobi the Darth Vader vs Third Sister fight where in the how Vader could basically force block her lightsaber, and she was pretty much fully trained in the force. Similarly the hallway scene in Rogue One he can toss people around, it's hard to imagine Luke being able to compete with him at all. I kind of prefer the OT Vader without the prequels, strong with the force yes, but not superhuman powerful.
One nitpick though. Several times The Falcon is being chased by TIE fighters, why didn't Han or Leia go back and use the turret cannons to shoot them down like in ANH Death Star escape?
Return of the Jedi
Confession, growing up this was always my favorite Star Wars movie. On rewatch for me it kind of felt the weakest of the three. I guess you have to be an adult to kind of see it?
My son seemed to get a bit bored at parts. I think the Jabba Palace scenes were a bit more subdued and slow-paced than I remember, and so was a few of the middle scenes with Yoda or Luke's revelation to Leia, very quiet and somber, but definitely nothing like what we saw in ANH or ESB in terms of action-pacing.
My son thought ewoks were kind of silly and funny, but doesn't seem like to make an impression on him since we watched, unlike the AT-ATs or some of the human characters. He was afraid of the emperor, on some level I think he "got" the dynamics between Luke and Vader as it's clear Vader is his dad and Vader used to be a good guy (Anakin) in contrast to the truly evil Emperor so that all seemed to work well for him. I have to say, as a Dad now myself the final fight scenes and what Vader did hit way more deeply than anytime I've watched before, definitely teared up a bit. One question I got from him which I struggled to answer was "What does it mean to turn to the dark-side?" I'm not really sure I have a good answer other than "be tricked to do bad things" which is as good as I could explain it to his level. I guess that is a pretty abstract and fictional concept for a 4 year old.
Overall I loved the Luke - Vader rematch, again, Vader seems to be slowing down with age or wear and tear when compared to even Rogue One or ESB but Luke is getting stronger. Since Luke is the only Jedi left at the time, it was never clear how strong he was supposed to be, also being physically a small guy he doesn't seem as impressive a hero but more of an underdog in the saga, yet he took on Vader 1 on 1 and defeated him, so maybe the Force is stronger with him than I used to give him credit for? The fight was good, emotionally intense, I almost wish the actual lightsaber battle was a little longer.
One new takeaway that never really struck me before was that the ultimate climax to STAR WARS was the hero throwing away his weapon and choosing Non-Violence and ultimately being saved by (a father's) Love. That's kind of a radical notion for the 2020s let alone the 1980s. Props to George Lucas for that unconventional twist there. I almost feel like this doesn't get talked about enough compared to other aspects of Lucas' philosophy or themes in the films.
The Battle of Endor still is one of the best space battles I've ever seen. I do think the Battle of Scarif in Rogue One is probably on-par with it, but for the 1980s it's so impressive what they were able to achieve with the technology then. Also my favorite minor character of the series is Admiral Ackbar. I'm glad my son enjoyed him as well (also I felt his costume held up better in HD than the ANH alien rubber mask costumes). I wish he had his own spin-off show or movie tbh.
Overall Thoughts
I was so happy to finally be able to share this treasured part of my childhood with my son, and he seemed to take as much enjoyment from them as I did. He still asks to read the books at bedtime and we have been trying to branch out and get more Star Wars books about the Prequels and Sequels. As far as toys goes, he likes LEGO in general so we've got him a couple of Star Wars LEGO sets. It's a far cry from the collection of action figures and space ships I had in the mid-80s, but he enjoys it.
Next Star Wars to Show Him
I think that I would like to show him some of the Prequels next. Those were never my favorites, but maybe they will appeal to him at his age? The prequels were released when I was in HS/College and already had a lot of head-canon for what I thought would be in them from the EU and other sources. Maybe the Clone Wars animated show would be appropriate? I've never actually seen it myself so don't know if it's good for him to watch, maybe it's more for older kids?
I think Rogue One is also a natural fit with the Original Trilogy, but that's probably a bit too dark/adult for him right now I think. I do wonder if there are any good santitized kids picture books about it though 😂

2023.06.09 06:23 Competitive_Bid7071 If you guys were apart of the Lucas Film Story/Continuity Group how would you handle the Decline & “Fall” of the Galactic Empire after The Battle of Endor?
First of all hello everyone! I’m new here so excuse me if I make some sort of mistake or accidentally cause drama in some sort of way, because honestly that often happens with me even if I don’t intend on doing it myself at all lol, anyway I was curious about how you guys would have handled the fall of the Decline & “Fall” of the Empire Story-wise if you guys were apart of the Continuity/story group at Lucas Film. Personally as a geek & guy who loves history I’d honestly be really excited and have a few ideas for how I’d want things to go. Anyways…. Here’s my basic bullet points for how I’d want to handle this subject in a way that is unique yet mirrors real world history to an extent.
Personally I kinda feel the Empires fall was a bit too quick personally speaking based on the current Expanded Universe's canon. Originally the conflict lasted for another 15 years after Darth Vader & Palpatine were killed in the second Death Star. While the Rebel Alliance (Now the New Republic) continued to capture important worlds such as Coruscant, they still knew they were outnumbered due to how large the Imperial army & Navy were. So they basically just sat back and watched as the remnants of the Empire lead by high ranking officials or Governor’s kill each other over what they should control due to the power vacuum left behind. I mean two imperial Grand Admiral’s literally killed each other over who should control the correlian sector for gods sake lol.
When the time was right, The New Republic did more devastating strikes against the Empire causing them even more devastating losses & damage, until Grand Admiral Thrawn Came back & reunified the remaining imperial world’s & military under his command where they then actually made scarily good progress against the new republic until he was assassinated. After that the war continued until The Galactic Concordance (also formerly known as the Pellaeon–Gavrisom Treaty) was signed which basically formed the imperial remnant afterwards albeit as a rump state.
Whereas in the modern canon the Empire falls in only a YEAR after Endor, that feels way too quick & unrealistically personally speaking when we look at real world empires throughout history, I mean The British & Roman Empires Took hundreds of years until they finally fell, but for the empire to fall this quickly it just seems unbelievable. So this is how I’d change things to make it more realistic & closer to real how real history goes when an empire or authoritarian regime crumbles:
- After Endor you can have “Operation Cinder” begin BUT not have every high ranking imperial follow even if they got the message from Palpatine about it, as realistically speaking some higher ranking imperials would be more concerned with preserving the Imperial state or carving out there own territory to form there own "Mini-Empires" so to speak rather. Then following the orders of a man who had died just recently, even if he was the emperor as he's dead. With several imperial “warlords” popping & start carving out there own States & Territories from what remains of the once unified Empire. While this is going on you have the New Republic launching strikes against what remains of the Empire all the while doing larger campaigns against them, such as where Coruscant is recaptured by them. But mostly have them sit back & watch as these warlords tear themselves apart as they’re army & navy isn’t large enough yet to fully fight against them in larger campaigns or military strikes.
- While this is going on, we see Thrawn come back from the unknown regions & reunify what remains of the Empire into a somewhat stable force which is actually quite successful in that it’s able to recapture several worlds from the new republic (including Coruscant) but then Thrawn is Assassinated by one of his advisors like what originally happened or he's captured by a New Republic Special forced strike team ultimately causing the Imperial Forces to route from battle & retreat, either way.... more infighting now begin's amongst the yet again fractured imperial warlords where Coruscant is recaptured by the new republic & the new republic basically continues what they were already doing. That being just sitting back & watching the imperial warlords & other remnants kill each other, which goes on for another 5-8 or 10-15 years where the remaining imperials have had several losses when fighting each other in this civil war that only became worse after Thrawn died.
- At this point the remnants of the Empire are Exhausted & Broken down, with several of the Imperial warlords either dead or captured by the new republic. But then Gallius Rax comes out of the shadows and using his charisma & claim that he was to be Palpatine’s “Heir” he unites the Empires remnants under his leadership where we basically starts sabotaging them to follow through Palpatine's plan of destroying the Empire as Operation Cinder had failed, later on The Battle of Jakku happens with it being the remaining Empires finale stand against the now much stronger & tougher New Republic Military forces. Where the Empire ultimately loses the battle & the Super Star Destroyer "Ravenger" crashes into the surface of Jakku breaking the moral of the Imperiao forces causing several of them to flee into the Unknown regions under Rae Salone & other Surviving Imperials at the battle. The campaign was disastrous for the Imperial Military and the Imperial Space was reduced to eight remote sectors in the Outer Rim & some core worlds. Which leads to the finale parts of this post.
- At this point we’d get place talks between the Imperial Remnant & New Republic where Pellaeon and Leia engaged in preliminary talks aboard the Millennium Falcon in the Pesitiin system before Pellaeon returned to Bastion. Fifteen days later the Galatic Concordance treaty would be signed with Gilad Pellaeon & Mas Ameda to act as Representatives of the Imperial Remnant. While Mon Mothma & Ponc Gavrisom represented The New Republic.
- The Rules of the Treaty were the following (The Imperial Remnant makes peace with the New Republic, The Galactic Civil War is to come to an End, Usage of cloaking devices banned for both sides, Systems in each governmental group would be allowed to choose their alignment, The Imperial Remnant must become a Democratic Union/Allow Democracy like the new republic, A ban on the recruitment and mobilization of stormtrooper forces is to be put in place & Both Sides Military is only allow to be 300,000 to 500,000 in size, The abandonment of Imperial Academies scattered across the Galaxy along with rebellion training camps, The Empire must give up its claim to Coruscant, The Imperial Remnant & New Republic must remain within pre-determined boundaries in the Core Worlds and Inner Rim/outer rim, A ban on torture for both sides, and most importantly a recognition of Civil-rights for non-human species & freedom of speech and expression in the public & press/news for both sides). The Galactic Concordance was also accompanied by punishing war reparations and strict disarmament treaties for both sides but it mostly favored those effected by the war who weren’t on either side.
- After the signing of the Treaty there would be trials held where several surviving high ranking Imperials were to be changed with War Crimes or for partaking in crimes against humanity & other species. This is also done though to members of the former rebellion or rebel cells that were accused on extremist actions.
- The Galaxy at this point is pretty much at peace although there’s some small pockets of Imperial Groups & Terrorist factions that don’t abide by the treaty, but ultimately are debt with by both Governments respectively.
Anyways… what do you guys think of my ideas? Would you like to hear how I’d handle the origins of The First Order? I’d love to hear what you guys would add or change if you’d like to discuss this topic.
Edit 1: I'm aware that what I described with Thrawn, Pelion, & Imperial Warlords has been somewhat shown in several of the current shows on Disney+ & some books, hopefully though things are done in a way similar to what I described, it's execution that matters the most!
Edit 2: I actually never knew Rax was actually purposely sabotaging the empire to make it fall, that's actually quite interesting. Thank you
u/EndlessTheorys_19 for telling me this!

Boba Fett use Jaster Mereel as an alias. Comics Blood Ties: Boba Fett is Dead wrapped up the novel Last One Standing with Prequel movie lore as well. So did the Legacy of the Force.
The Republic fighting the clones explained in the Thrawn trilogy are the
Morgukai Shadow Army they are referring to.

2023.06.09 05:00 Mr_Frost1993 Planning a new build
| After building that Boba Fett rig for my brother, the building bug got in me. Already painted a Hyte Y60 and transferred all of my own build’s component’s into it so I can gift it to a friend (idk the rules about posting a Hyte case despite like 90% of the actual hardware inside it being from Corsair, but I can post that if y’all want or if a mod comments on this saying it’s ok) Now that my ICUE 5000T is stripped of components, I think I’ll fully disassemble and paint it like I did with the 7000D I used for the Boba Fett build. I’m thinking I’ll go with a Vault-Tec theme for my personal setup, and here are the first official components for it! I also have a new H150i on the way to replace my old one that is currently in my friend’s Hyte case Also, for anyone reading this, do you think I should wait for the new ICUE Link, or force myself to follow the Old Ways of cable management? submitted by Mr_Frost1993 to Corsair [link] [comments] |
2023.06.09 03:25 Throwaway_09298 XREAL AIR SCREEN RECORDING SAMPLE 1 (MacOS M2 MBP)
Video:
https://youtu.be/__fr5SACJYY Images:
https://imgur.com/a/Vot24Nn - Image 1: MacOS Display Settings
- Image 2: Mission Control view of the nebula app on the ultrawide monitor (the desktop is split halfway between two eyes)
- Image 3: What the nebula shows me (to my two eyes)
- Image 4: what nebula grabs from the 3 screens
This is a screen recording of the xreal/nreal air on a MacOS m2 MacBook Pro using nebula. Sorry for no audio. I used QuickTime. Also ignore my code. 85% of it isn't mine and it's not complete at all.
How it works (I think): The nebula app creates 2 virtual monitors and extends them left and right of your mac main display. The nebula app then screen records those 3 screens and projects them on a 3rd virtual ultra wide-screen monitor. This is a video of what nebula shows inside its field of view.
I am a software developer that works from home. I recently downsized with my wife to an apartment. Because of that I needed to retire my multiple monitor desk setup. I have a detachable DuexPlus but it's bulky and adds a lot of extra weight in by bag. Plus I look like THAT GUY at Starbucks or a boba shop. These glases get rid of that awkwardness. My wife now says I look like Ray Charles and that's 100% a compliment by any means.
Use around others: I have the 3 monitor setup going with the glasses and what I did was on the center screen I put up a black square so I can see thru it and just use the left and right monitors for work, that way we can watch TV together (American born Chinese on Disney plus). I'm able to stay fully engaged with her and the show and work. If I was doing this with the nebula floating web browser I could still have the same setup. What is great about this is that I don't look like that dad in the apple commercial recording his kids with a vr headset out of the moment. Also if I'm in public I can have a dedicated empty space to interact with someone right in front of me.
What I like: almost everything. FoV, angles, weight of frames, space for glasses (I'm getting the prescription frames filled out soon), tracking, etc.
What I don't like:
- speakers are trash but very very very usable. They get loud but very cheap. (coming from a macbook user of course)
- IT IS VERY EASY TO MESS UP THE DISPLAYS. DON'T TOUCH THE DISPLAYS. If you mess them up, reset the pram/smc and reinstall the nebula app. the 3rd virtual display is in the upperight of the right side extended monitor (or lower left corner of the ultrawide). There's only a very small gap to mouse over. I wanted to see if I could change the extended monitors to be ultra wide but messed up stuff.
- Impossible to use Mission Control view since you're only looking at a single full screen app on a 3rd virtual monitor. Just the cost of the methods of projection. Not a deal breaker.
----------------------- ETC ------------------
Samsung Dex on galaxy fold 4. It works. that's all there is to say about that. it's 0DofM but with the adapter it's 3DofM (confirmed on reddit by xreal).
Nebula app on Android: it's great. the UI for YouTube is amazing, the UI for the movie app is amazing (love the wheel chooser). Everything is so immersive. I like the spring board browser. I would probably never use this app bc I can't pull the apps on my phone into it (at least I can't find out how) and I don't want to sign in to all the sites. But the head tracking is dope and the ability to put floating windows anywhere is dope. If it had 6DofM I'd hide windows all over my home ready to go for whatever. I still need to try the 3rd party record app and the live streaming app. But seriously the YouTube app is amazing. I could definitely use something like that for ESPN. The bones are definitely there for what disney made for apple. THAT SAID...I don't like using my phone as a stick. It's very finicky. The controls aren't bad just the laser. That said thank you for thinking of left handed users.
PLEASE ADD A WAY TO DISABLE THE RECORDING/CAPTURE SOUND INSIDE THE NEBULA APP.

2023.06.09 02:33 FriendlyFriend333 [24/M] Looking for a gf ❤️
Hi there! My name is Daniel and I'm from Southern California (the Inland Empire, specifically). I'm just looking for someone to have a genuinely great time with. I'm not a very picky person and I don't really care much for looks. I more so value your personality and how well we vibe, so pretty much anyone is welcome to get to know me! (I mean that in the most non-conceited way possible lol). I would just ask that you be 21 and older.
My interests:
~ As stated in my title I would consider myself the typical nerdy type (gaming, anime, comic books, super hero movies, etc.) If you like share any of those interests then I think we'll get along great lol
~ I'm Black and Cherokee, I'm bilingual (English and Japanese), around 5'11" but 6 feet tall on a good day. I'm also trying to get better at working out as well so an exercise buddy would be great also lol
~ On top of being your typical nerd I am also a huge horror movie fan to the point of considering making my own horror movie. I have a couple ideas and I would love to share them with someone who's interested in hearing them.
~ I listen to any kind of music except country cuz it all sounds the same to me lol. So if that's a deal breaker then I apologize but I just can't get into it. I also used to rap and sing and have been thinking of doing it again. I have made about 9 or 10 songs in total. Let me know if you'd like to hear something I've made.
~ I love coffee and boba so random coffee and boba runs will be a thing. One of my favorite things to is visit a coffee place I've never been to and try out their coffee and see if I'm adding it to my list or favorite spots or if I'm just never going there again. I know, it sounds weird but I promise it can be kinda fun.
What I expect from you:
~ Good communication and someone who likes to go one random coffee or boba runs. Anime lovers and gamers are a plus as well. Would love a gamer friend/girlfriend. Also, I like cuddling while watching horror movies so if you like doing the same then that would also be nice 😌.

2023.06.08 20:06 King-Of-The-Raves The Chosen One Prophecy is the Worst Part of Anakin's Character
So I've been thinking a lot about Anakin, esp his role as The Chosen One and how that actually affects the plot vs how large it looms over his character.
I know after The Sequels, a lot of folks were defensive about Anakin's role as Chosen One potentially being undermined in The Rise of Skywalker. Now, for the record, I disagree with that...but even if I did agree...I don't mind. Because I don't really care about the prophecy.
I have a potentially hot take in that I think The Chosen One prophecy is...the worst part about Anakin's character?
I feel that as presented in The Original Trilogy, his arc in there is already perfect and that getting his backstory in the prequels is very interesting but the prophecy provides very little at best and undermines elements of his arc at worst. It switches Anakin from being just a man who was almost the best of them then becoming the worst and happening to be the one to betray the jedi and succumb to The Emperor and chooses to resist, to defining his entire journey as one of predestined arcs and cosmic importance.
So in the original trilogy, there was no such prophecy to color Anakin's arc in those three movies. Its in the prequel trilogy we get this expansion on his character, but what were the motives to add this? I can only speculate but I think it would be to: Emphasize Anakin's importance, provide dramactic irony to his fall in the prequels, and make his turn against Palpatine more valuable.
However, I think that Anakin was already important, the dramactic irony matters little, and his turn against Palpatine was already important. And given the lack of depth the prophecy gets in the prequels and how little we see of it informing Anakin's character, I'd say its generally a failure as a plot element and takes more than it gives.
To put in short before getting deeper...when I first watched Anakin turn against Palpatine to save Luke, having embraced the good in him at last and telling Luke with his dying breath "you were right about me.", it was already a perfect moment...I didn't think "man, but why'd he turn against palpatine? was there a prophecy or something?" And thats how I generally feel about it.
I will be touching on expanded media a little bit later on, but this is mostly in view of the core movies as thats where it was introduced / supposed to be most valuable.
----
Before we dive into details, here are what seem to be the three major parts of Anakin's journey that are colored by The Chosen One prophecy:
- Anakin being accepted into The Order
- Anakin's fall
- Anakin's redemption
Here are how each of them are affected:
- Anakin is too old to be brought into The Order. Qui-Gon believes him to be the chosen one, which spurs him to recruit anakin. However this doesn't convince the council, and only through Anakin's valor, Qui-Gon's wishes and Obi-Wan's protest is he admitted. The council generally doesnt hold the prophecy in any regard.
- Now The Chosen One prophecy doesn't directly impact Anakin's fall, but one could argue that Anakin's sense of entitlement is heavily influenced with that designation. When it comes to Anakin's fall to The Dark Side, The Chosen One prophecy's role is on a meta level, providing dramactic irony.
- At last, The Chosen One prophecy comes to fruition...decades later, Anakin who had fallen so far has turned against Palpatine and destroyed the sith once and for all, bringing balance to The Force.
----
I don't feel like these are as crucial to The Chosen One prophecy as they first seem, and here are ways for each of those milestones I think could easily be worked around without the prophecy:
- While it affects Qui-Gon a lot and directly influences his desicion to recruit Anakin, it actually isn't what gets Anakin into The Order. The council is almost entirely unconvinced of his role as The Chosen One. I think this is the only point where The Chosen One prophecy directly affects the plot, but in its absence could easily be moved around to fit. Not being The Chosen One, Anakin could still have an exceptionally high connection to The Force...and Qui-Gon sensing and confirming it as well as feeling bad for Anakin and not believing in the age rule could be motivated to take Anakin in and give him a shot to the path of a jedi and the council would be convinced the same ways.
- It surprisingly doesn't really provide anything other than a few throwaway lines in ROTS...it doesn't directly affect Anakin's arc in the movie and only provides dramactic irony. He's supposed to be The Chosen One, so isn't it crazy that he's fallen so far? I feel like it could be achieved the same way without it...showing how noble and courageous he is, how he strives to be a paragon of the jedi but his worst qualities always dominate his best, and we see how someone who could've and should've been the best of The Order in a declining age become its worst.
- Now this is the easiest to see without The Chosen One prophecy, because well...it originally didn't have The Chosen One prophecy in mind. Anakin isn't fulfilling a prophecy when he turns against Palpatine, he's confronting his abuser and sacrificing himself to save his son because he loves him, and has brought out the best of him.
------
In Anakin's journey without the prophecy, he's a slave boy who got lucky with his connection to The Force and through a generous outreach with Qui-Gon is able to get a shot to a fulfilling life. He strives to earn the position he got and protect others who were powerless like himself, and pushes himself to be greater and greater. He strives to be a paragon of jedi virtue, but more and more allows his worst qualities to win over his good qualities because of his deep baggage, resentment, ego, manipulation, etc. until he finally goes from the high high of hero of the clone wars to the low low as geonocidal monster. Resigned to his fate, regressing to little more than a slave to Palpatine and affirming that he really couldn't change his destiny, he doubles down until his son encourages the good in him to finally overpower the bad. Anakin turns against Palpatine and chooses good, and becomes a true jedi.
With the prophecy, he was predestined to become a jedi, Qui-Gon was interested in him because he was The Chosen One, he feels entitled because he's The Chosen One, he falls to The Dark Side but we know he'll be fine because he's The Chosen One, and eventually he turns against Palpatine because he's The Chosen One.
Perhaps too harsh and reductive view on it, I admit.
----
With all this in mind, lets talk about The Chosen One prophecy more broadly.
What does it really provide at its core? Maybe I'm too critical, but all I find it brings to the table is a little dramactic irony and Ewan Mcgregor's great delivery "you were the chosen one!" (which might make it worth it on its own tbh) But seriously, for such a seemingly important detail of the character we get very little in ways of exploring it...in the core movies, Anakin has virtually no thoughts about it and we don't get the sense of whether or not he even believes in it himself.
Presenting The Chosen One prophecy, if I'm to be critical, is a lazy way to emphasize Anakin's importance without doing anything interesting with it. Its usually a bad trope to rely on, and whats more we don't even get a cool name for it ala the dark side's Sith'ari or Dune's Mu'ad-Dib...we literally get the lazy name "The Chosen One."
In fact, I think The Chosen One prophecy actually undermines Anakin's story (sliiiiightly, but still). He still chooses to save his son by killing Palpatine, but there is an element brought forth by the prophecy that suggests a decrease in his agency...him rising against Palpatine was always going to happen, less than Luke's miracolous redemption of his father (while its his desicions, one could argue hes an instrument of fate).
Now, that doesn't mean that expanded media doesn't explore it in more interesting ways...Darth Plagieus book and comics for example have a good perspective on it, but in terms of the core media and movies depicting Anakin's journey I feel it is unneccessary, underexplored and largely a failure.
And indeed, I don't think The Chosen One (even with its lazy name) is doomed to fail as a plot element. If they explored it more, if the jedi order at large starts to revere Anakin more as he proves himself in the war as of the start of ROTS it can play into his ego and if we get the sense he believes it it would fuel his sense of entitlement esp when it comes to being a jedi master / seat on the council. Why wouldn't he use the argument "I'm the chosen one, I deserve to be made master!" So in that way, could fuse great with his growing ego and resentment against the jedi. ....Except they don't do that, and any application of it into that arc is subtext at best.
Or, they could flip it and do an evil prophecy. Anakin is believed to be fulfilling the role of this evil force user, but Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan believe in him, but Anakin is feeling crushed under the judgmental eyes of the jedi and an extenstial dread he'll fulfill the prophecy. And when he does snap, he resigns himself to his fate...believing himself to be too weak to resist and doubles down on the evil. But then in ROTJ, when he turns against Palpatine he reclaims his destiny for himself, choosing good.
What if we get a better sense of its spiritual and cosmic importance? What if we get any indication of Anakin's spiritual journey as a jedi, that he absorbed literally any elements of their doctrine or belief and how he sees his importance as a Chosen One in that light. Maybe get some force lore on that, like The Chosen One is the only one who can become one with the force while living?
Really, any change or additon that would actually explore The Prophecy more or fuse it more with Anakin's arc more than just a superficial level would greatly increase its value.
But as it stands, I think it takes more than it gives and is pretty boring in the main media.
What do y'all think?
----
TL;DR: The Chosen One prophecy is an uninteresting, underexplored part of Anakin's character that provides almost nothing to his arc and is just there for dramactic irony / to emphasize his importance in a lazy way. We get the trope without even a cool name. Could've been explored in more interesting ways in the movies to justify its presence, but takes more than it gives. As always, there are good pieces of expanded media that go into better detail with it.

2023.06.08 07:54 TSyverson "Or when all heroes are wounded..."
So frustrated today to find victory in "Predator and Prey" (Boba Fett) slip through my fingers. Mathematically it wasn't possible to win on condition of moving the supplies to the exit point, but there was a thin chance I could wound the remaining heroes- and I did it!
But as I go to read the epilogue for my friends, it doesn't say those 6 words - "or when all heroes are wounded." I couldn't believe it. I don't recall having played a mission where that wasn't a possible victory condition for the Imperials. Was this an oversight? A typo? I (we) couldn't think of a thematic reason why this mission should be excluded from that typical situation. I decided to rule it that they won - but what do you think?
Incredulous, I just looked through every campaign and expansion pack I have, and only see a handful of missions out of the lot where that is not a win condition, and half of those mention the defeat of an individual character.
