A little backstory: So I (24F) move to across the country about 7-8 months ago to be closer to my sister. Moving is expensive so I stayed with my sister (25F), her boyfriend (30M) and two kids, step son and bio daughter(6M) (6F) until I could save a bit to save it a deposit down on a new apartment in a busier city because she lives in a small with not many jobs in my field. The plan was to come out and work until I could move to the city, get an apartment and go back to school. When I move, I find out my sister and her bf are having trouble. They fight, he’s out until 3am-6am every night, paying woman on for their attention, talking to other women in town, and this isn’t the first time. My sisters bf has always been an alcoholic. Eventually there was a pretty bad night where her bf put his hands on my sister. Cops were called, it was bad. So we moved out and found a place of our own in town. I put my plans on hold because my sister didn’t work a lot and her bf didn’t want her to, to stay with the kids. So I helped her out. We had planned to move out of the town and start fresh after a few months of saving money. A few months down the line, she’s going all the time and I end up watching her daughter a lot of nights, which I don’t mind because I love my niece more than anything, but it got to a point where because I just moved to a small town and had no friends it was more expected and that got infuriating because I felt like a free live in nanny. She starts seeing her ex again. He’s still drinks and he’s still emotionally manipulative, but as far as she knows he doesn’t cheat so he’s good as new.
So here’s what put this all in motion. Last night she went out and said she was just going to her exes house to let out the dogs, but instead she leaves to the bar her ex works at and and leaves the kids asleep on the couch without letting me know. So I’m sleeping and I hear my niece (who is sick) screaming for her mom at 2 o’clock in the morning. After a while I realize no one is getting up to get her. So I get up and my sister is nowhere to be found and calm my niece down. I text my sister and tell her what happened and ask her where she is. She came home from the bar soon after. She then threw up all over the bathroom and then had extremely loud inter course with her ex until 4:30 am after knowing I had a long work week and just wanted to sleep. I addressed all of my feelings in the morning (keep in mind this isn’t the first time I’ve expressed I’m not comfortable with him being over at the house all the time and sleeping over). This blew up and she said she felt like it I wanted her to cut everyone off so she can just spend time with me. I don’t feel like that’s how it came across although I can’t speak for her perception. But I was fed up and told her I’m done being disrespected/walked over. That I’m not going to continue to watch the kids and act like I’m okay with him being over all the time when she assured me he wouldn’t be. On top of this they are together every second of free time they have, so if we have plans she’ll invite him, or go to his family events instead of whatever plans we had. She invites me so I don’t feel alone, but I don’t think she keeps in mind I’m just not comfortable around her bf. So I’m moving in with my parents which is in a completely different state and she thinks I’m a horrible person because her relationship is none of my business and she can’t support her and her daughter by herself. She’s right about her relationship being her personal business. I just can’t do it anymore. So AITA?

My bf left the house last night from 1-3am. I checked his call log on ATT app and found a number he had been texting on and off for a week. It was easy to find out that it’s a girl who recently moved to our neighborhood. When he got home, I was awake in bed next to our 1yr old daughter and he immediately came upstairs and asked “what’s wrong/ what’s your problem?” before I even asked where he was. he said he was with a guy friend at our apartments hot tub, which I knew was bs so I just said ok we’ll talk in the morning. Around 7am, I woke up to him standing over me staring and he said we’re going to talk now. His anger has become violent in the past and I could tell he was about to get into that mode. I kept trying to drop it but he kept pushing. A few hours later, I finally just said I know you’re lying about last night and the past (see my previous posts about catching him looking for escorts). I just said I can’t trust you and am just continuously getting hurt. I grabbed my bag I had packed for the beach and my daughter to take her to the beach until he cooled down. As I was grabbing the door handle, he pulled my backpack and flung me backwards while I was holding my daughter. I kept begging him to please just let me leave, but every time I tried to get to the door, he grabbed me in some way and dragged me back. Now I was fearful for my daughter and tried to give in to his anger to keep her safe. She was screaming crying at this point and I was begging him to calm down because she was so scared. He kept taking her from me and whenever I had a chance I would try to run to one of the 2 doors to get out for help. We live in a small apartment so he could catch me quick and force me inside. Since he’s bipolar or something along those lines, he quickly started to play victim and asked if I wanted him to leave. I said yes I’m scared and our daughters scared, we need space before we can talk. He kept saying if he leaves, he’s going to take her and not tell me where they are. She was screaming crying still and then he finally let her go so she could come to me. He then pulled out his gun, loaded it and put it so his head and said I’m going to kill myself and you both need to watch. I kept begging please don’t and was just trying to calm her down. My poor baby was holding her hands over her chest because she was so scared and hurt. I was doing my best to calm myself so I could calm her. I kept moving her so she couldn’t see him but he kept cornering us with the gun to his head. At one point, he grabbed her and pulled her towards him and said he wanted her to watch. His tone throughout this entire situation was still very aggressive. I finally just said I don’t want you to leave and we can work this out. That’s the only thing that started to dissipate all of this. He put the gun down finally and said I only want you and all this other bs about how he’s never done anything. I responded ok I believe you just to save ourselves. I have been upstairs in our apartment while he is staying downstairs currently. I’m honestly scared to leave and don’t know what to do. I was hoping one of our neighbors heard the screaming earlier and would have called the cops or security at least. I’m scared to get a restraining order or anything against him because he has very violent family members and I believe he would send them after me if he went to jail or something. I know he talks shit about me to them and I haven’t even them before so I know they’ll take his side. Do I still get a restraining order? My daughter saw him when we were downstairs eating an hour ago and wanted to still go to him. I feel like such an awful mom having put her in that situation. I know she has to be so confused. Any advice is welcome

He talks openly of her and has always text her in front of me. also has a long term boyfriend. I’ve never thought much of them being close, until he was going through his pictures in his phone in front of me, and I saw an up close picture of her (looking prettier than usual - it was not a naked/sexual pic) saved in his camera roll. It could have been a screen shot he took, or a photo she sent him, or a photo he even took? I didn’t say anything to him about it, but it’s been bothering me ever since. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and I feel silly about randomly brining it up now. Or if I even should? I don’t want to come off as being the overly possessive girlfriend, but ugh, I keep thinking about it … Can anyone please provide me insight? Thank you!

Might seem like a weird question, but ya. Just lmk.
Grandpa/Grandma: Immigrants. Grandpa was traumatized by war bc his village was burnt down or something and his mom was attacked in front of him. It was gross. He fled with my grandma to the states. He had a successful business but was a severe alcoholic and was extremely angry/abusive towards everyone. Grandma just cried a lot and never stopped cooking.
Other- Grandpa's siblings all died, but they had kids. Some are doing fine, but some either killed themselves or overdosed. -

My aunts/uncles and their kids(who are now adults, unless otherwise stated)
Btw, all of the cousins have anxiety severe enough that they need Xanax at the minimum.
Unit 1: Aunt is an investment banker and severe alcoholic. She was investigated by CPS but they eventually dropped it. Her kids/my cousins (8, 15) have panic attacks and anger issues regularly. When she's mad they hide.
Unit 2: Uncle is on a lot of Xanax to calm down. He does well, professionally. As a kid my grandpa regularly bust open his lips. One of his kids is a genius (IQ over 145), went to a competitive medical school, but then got addicted to painkillers and had a mental breakdown, and then staged a pretend wedding. The other child fled to the other part of the country, and is doing fine, even though they ignore everyone. The other child was neglected pretty severely and cut himself, abused drugs and had to go to a troubled teen camp, and then molested another one of the cousins.
Unit 3: Aunt is wealthy and doesn't do much. She has pretty severe anger issues. One of her kids is really quiet and is often dazed. The other became a severe alcoholic but is now fine.
Unit 4: Uncle is also wealthy and does not do much. He has obscure interests and used to have severe anger issues as well, and was criticized for being a tiger parent (ignored his child if she didn't perform for long periods of time, extreme mood swings). His child was molested by the other cousin. She developed multiple dependencies on drugs and dated horrible people. She has a good job now and is doing fine.

I only just got Jedi survivor today and have played about an hour and a half so far so please don’t spoil anything. The game is fairly decent so far, nothing amazing but far from bad. My only real complaint would be the graphics and frame rate. I feel ea have went to far with it and it just doesn’t run as smoothly as I would like. I am playing on a ps5 and have my setting set to performance mode and I still notice that in gameplay the frame rate randomly drops and in cutscenes it’s the same if not worse. I honestly would of preferred fallen order’s graphics and a clean smooth running game than the new advanced graphics with some choppy frame rate. Does anyone else feel the same or am I alone in this?

Kerillian has long been my least favorite set of careers and least favorite character. Cruel and indifferent to the others, dismissive of their deaths, and insulting to their gods, almost entirely unprovoked. It never seemed to be for laughs either, like Saltzpyre’s bigotry, just genuinely mean spirited. After the SotT release she became even worse, and I thought “guys just ditch her after missions, this chick is total poison”.
Within the last year though, it feels like there’s been a slight change. It’s like the End Times are becoming “real” for her and put an end to her snarky teenager phase. An immortal who has to grow after realizing her life does in fact have an end. It’s becoming less of an angsty cynical “nothing matters” attitude and more “I’m about to lose literally everything”.
Her forest and her gods have tricked her, and turned her into a tool. She confesses as much to Bardin of all people. Her lines about human captives have become Much more sympathetic, and not in a backhanded way. Be’lakor revealed her intense guilt over the human deaths brought about by her mistakes. She admires Kruber’s brutish bravery and indifference towards personal sacrifice. Sienna “gets” her. She understands Bardin’s value as a friend who knows what it’s like to be an elder race among humans. She even begrudgingly accepts that Saltzpyre’s god might be valid and his zealotry isn’t misplaced.
The layer of sarcasm and obnoxious personality traits are fading away like old paint. She does her best to keep up appearances, but the warmth has become much more clear. I’m so glad this character has grown so much after nearly a decade, after the end she might actually be missed, and she won’t perish alone and misunderstood.

2023.06.05 04:35 AlexVioletteLuther I have accepted a job at one company before I heard back from another company and receiving an offer letter. Should I work at the first company while waiting on my paperwork to be processed by the second?

So I have been applying everywhere I could for about 5 months after losing my job at the start of the year. I had to pull from my savings to pay my bills and my anxiety started getting so out of hand, I became very depressed. I had to ask my parents for help to get by. A month or so ago I applied to a job at Company A. I had applied there multiple times months ago and did not hear back so when I applied again, I did not expect to anything. After I decided to try my luck again, I was immediately called in for an interview and offered the job a few days later. Its a low paying job, but I figured I could make a little money while I waited for something else to open up.
A day before the job interview at Company A I met someone through a friend who works at a larger company (Company B). After speaking to them about my previous job experience and degree, they said they would try to get me a job at Company B. A week goes by and I honestly did not expect anything to come from B (I didn't have much confidence given the size of the company). Well, I was very wrong. I received two offers in one day. I interviewed for both within two weeks and was offered a high paying position. I am waiting on my offer letter from Company B and was told once my letter is received, it would take between 1-3 months before I would start training. I am meeting soon with Company A to start my HR paperwork. My dad, who has experience with Company B said it may take a long time or no time at all so he told me to just work at Company A for now. The only problem is, I'll have to take days off to go do paperwork/ drug testing for Company B out of town. I hate to take days off so early on. Both are intense jobs with a lot of training.
Should I start working at A while waiting for B to process my paperwork if I have to wait 3 months? Even if I have to take days off?

My husband will be 40 this year. In march of 22 he had a heart surgery that led to a stroke. It’s been over a year obviously, they suggest he’s plateaued and will likely not recover anymore. He’s functional enough to care for himself in most instances. He has aphasia now and has a very difficult time communicating. But he can bathe himself, he can drive (with no passengers), he can cook simple meals for himself. But he can do complex tasks. He can’t call and book an appointment for himself, he can’t refill his medication, he can’t fill out paperwork, he can’t fill out an application, he can’t control most of his big feelings, he can’t stop himself from swearing when he’s frustrated. The list goes on. Who would hire him? If you had an employee that I’d he got frustrated at someone else and he called them a stupid fucking moron and needed to go take a timeout for 10 minutes but then forgot that he was supposed to go back after 10 minutes and stayed on a break until you went to find him would you keep him as an employee?? Someone who can’t have a task that requires more than 3 steps? Who can’t read an instruction manual let alone an employee handbook? How is he not disabled? He has long term disability from when he was employed. But he’s been terminated from his job so we (me, him, and our 3 year old and 18 month old) have all lost our insurance. I can’t apply for Medicaid until I have an answer on if he’s disabled and now we have to go through what I can only assume with be a daunting appeals process. Thankfully his LTD has a program that helps with the appeals process. I’m just so angry about it. I don’t think I’m really looking for anything except a good vent. Thank you if you’ve read my woes and if you can relate I’m sorry. All the love to this group ❤️

Hey fellow webdevs,
I need some help deciding which database solution to use for my application.
I have been looking at Firebase and it looks pretty good, but I am very very concerned about cost at the start of this app, and I've also read that you can financially ruin yourself if you configure things improperly using cloud-based providers.
This will be a free to download/sign-up web + mobile application (using Capacitor) and I do not foresee generating revenue until there is a well-established userbase (50-100k users or until I can make money on in-app ads), so I am humbly asking for your opinion on which database solution would be best for a start-up that has no funding or money coming in that could handle an application with high reads and moderate to high writes and ideally real-time-ish data availability (I would like to use websockets for UX).
I also thought maybe I'm thinking about this incorrectly and maybe it's more of a software design problem and how to limit DB interactions as opposed to a DB provider problem? (I just know there will be lot's of reads and writes and maybe even SMS 2FA)

Hey all, looking for advice/direction on helping my daughter get into gaming. She’s 9, and has decided that regular board games are “boring.” She’s incredibly creative and has been creating fantasy based games with her friends at school, and through talking with her, it sounds like there’s a lot of world building going on. I have never played DND, but am fairly familiar with how the game works, and feel like this might be right up her alley. Also, after the 7th(?) viewing of Disney’s “Onward” and telling her there are games similar to the movie and what Barley plays, she seemed really interested/amazed that there were actual games comparable to what she saw in the movie.
I guess my question is this: do I try to introduce her to DND and create our own campaign, or would it be better to help her get involved in card-based games like Magic (if people still play Magic)? I’m definitely not trying to force the gaming angle, but she seems interested and I don’t know the best way to dive in. I know this is a huge ask, and I’m sure there are a million opinions on this, but thanks in advance!

we’re both currently in our senior year of highschool, and i’ll call her D. D and i had been best friends since 1st grade, so about 12 years now.
this year, a little after a month or so after i broke up with my girlfriend (who is a friend of D’s) i began crushing on this guy in my class. i didn’t know, but D started liking him as well. she knew that i liked him, since i told her after struggling with my feelings for a bit (was it too soon after the break up?????? was this a rebound type thing???? etc.) but i didn’t know she liked him, and he was never on her radar until i liked him.
anyways 2 weeks in once she starts liking him, she confesses. he rejects her (nicely) and then she tells him that i like him as well, and then starts saying all of these lies about me. like, i “cheated in my last relationship”, i “jump from person to person” and basically implying that i’m a slut and an all-around horrible person. the guy then tells me what she said (since we’re friends and kinda close) and a week or so later i basically confront her and end the friendship.
this was all in march.
now, it’s june, and D is in a new relationship with this guy. she’s liked him since gr 9 and has also done some pretty weird things, like snap-stalking him and irl stalking him at school.
i want to tell him all of this crazy shit D has done but i also feel so fucking petty at the same time. and then i feel like it’s okay to be petty, since she almost ruined something for me, because the guy likes me back we just don’t wanna get into anything in high school, plus she told a lot of other people she told him, so now i just feel odd. i have a group of much better friends that hasn’t been affected at all by what’s been going on between me and D, but i still can’t help but want to ruin things for her.

2023.06.05 04:35 FrustratedArtDude BFA Student Who Needs A Suitable Back Up - Help!

Hey all, basically got hit with a bit of a reality check over the past few months. I am currently in a program for a BFA in Creative Writing with a minor in business. I know this sounds stupid but I assumed that I would be able to find a job easier in something like administration with a year of uni under my belt but I am now up to 80 job applications, with around 25-40% being more normal minimum wage sort of jobs but still haven't recieved any job offer.

This all lead me to a realization that I do not want to be one of the many people with a BFA who finds themselves as a barista at 35 still saying they will make it one day. As such, I am trying to find skills or a certification etc that I can pursue while still in school for a BFA, since it is ultimately the thing that interests me the most and I would like to see it through and improve my craft.

Ultimately remote work is something I will ideally have to do, I don't live in a large population city and so job oppurtunities are limited. Whatever job I end up having as a backup/secondary to the arts I would ideally like to pay 60K~ with ideally oppurtunites to up around 100-120K, higher than that is useless for me.

One of the things that is making it hard for me to find another path to pursue is that I do not want to go back to school. This is a line in the sand for me, I do not want to get a BFA only to go right back into school for another degree. Another problem I had was that I could find interest in a lot of jobs, from watch repair to lighthouse keeper to finance, programming and electrician. I spent some time though and took an extensive career aptitude test which told me the following jobs (I've omitted anything that is in the arts): security engineer, budget analyst, cybercrime investigator, information security, data analyst and a few programming jobs like security software developer, javascript developer and full stack developer. Overall I would say finance and programming are the two most interesting sectors.

I've thought about being an electrician in the past, but have heard that it is the easiest trade and as such is oversaturated so:

Anyone have any experience with any of the above jobs that can shed some light?
What certifications, skills or courses should I be looking at?

okay so back story, i’m 23, about to be 24, and my boyfriend is 28, we’ve been together for 4.5 years. and he was being suspicious about where we’re going for my birthday. but then he reminded me to take off the 8th (my bday) 9th and 10th. i panicked about what we were doing on the 10th bc he said it was an all day thing. but then he said i should be concerned about the day before, because he has to pick out my outfit, and i asked why? and he said your birthday dinner. we usually go to red robins or ihop for my birthday because they have my safe foods. (i have arfid, so i’m extremely picky. so i’m also nervous about not liking the food, when we went to disney, i didn’t like anything they had lol, even tho he thought it was safe. i’m scared this won’t be safe.) he gave me very little clues but i know reddit’s full of no-it-alls🫶🏻 thank you in advance.
i wouldn’t mind a surprise but i need to find something to wear, because he said he would pick out my outfit but doesn’t think i have anything that would work. so i wanted some hints to figure it out. i’m also confused on why he would be paying such an expensive meal when i’m extremely picky.
so here are the hints for where he’s taking me: •super fancy attire -told me i had to wear heels, and a fancy ish dress. •needs reservations, he made his 3 weeks ago. says there might be a waitlist but doesn’t know. •he said (fun) drinks can be around 50$ but this sounds exaggerated. •within 10/15 miles from lindenwold/stratford ish area. •south jersey •heard about it from either vineland coworkers or from a friend that’s closer to the shore •not a chain restaurant. (i asked if it was cheesecake factory bc that’s the fanciest place i know lol) •says i’ll be overwhelmed but happily(?) •not a hotel or by a hotel •told his mom, his mom doesn’t remember what it’s called but she said it’s beautiful in pictures.

Why are some developers stuck on the past? Why don't they let modern languages like Rust take over C++?
There is no free meal, and there is no silver bullet. Period.
I’ve been a C++ developer for 18 years now, and I can tell you one thing.
A lot of people think that everything that came out yesterday is better, because people have learned on their mistakes and built something that solves the problem X that language Y had.
That’s not how the real world works.
You need to understand that languages are tools, used by different people for different purposes.
But let’s get back to C++ vs Rust.
First of all, almost all of the operating systems in existence have historically been written with 3 major technologies:
Assembler for the raw mappings of the underlying machine
C for the low level API and basic functions
C++for the middleware and high level abstraction layers
I must say that it doesn’t prevent you from writing an OS in Rust -> Redox - Your Next(Gen) OS - Redox - Your Next(Gen) OS
is an example of that.
And don’t get me wrong, Rust is a great language, but it was released in 2010. It’s been cascading some 30 years behind C++.
In those 30 years there have been a ton of libraries and general software written for C++, and with C++ for various purposes.
And whether you like it or not, C++ now isn’t the same language from when it started back in 1980’s.
It has evolved. Standards have changed, a lot of things have changed, and people who knew C++ beforehand will happily use it afterwards.
Look at C++-98, and take a look at C++-20. As if these two were completely different languages. But C++-20 will still support C++-98 paradigms.
Second thing is that people don’t like to change stuff just for the sake of change. If it ain’t broken don’t fix it.
It just doesn’t make sense for companies with large codebases to rewrite entire projects to Rust, just because it’s new and cool. Developers working on these projects receive salaries and are able to provide for their families by writing C++ code. End users don’t really care about the programming language used. They care about functionality.
Also, a lot of universities around the world still teach C and C++ as a part of their curriculum.
Not so many teach Rust.
So, no, those developers do not live in the past, but rather people live in illusion that new and shiny technology is better than an old and proven one.
