An article called “Why climate “doomers” are replacing climate “deniers” ” by Shannon Osaka was published on March 24th 2023 in the WaPo. I consider myself to be somewhat of a climate doomer so I thought it would be interesting to see what they had to say about “doomers”.
The article starts with the story of a young man, Sean Youra, who learns the truth about climate change, we are basically screwed, it’s too late, climate change is going to destroy the world as we know it. But apparently, according to “scientists and experts”, his discoveries are just “defeatism”, which could “undermine efforts to take action” and “may be just as dangerous as climate denial.”
Really? I’d be interested to learn how these efforts can change the fact that the concentration of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is now above 500ppm CO2e, which will warm the planet by about 10°C in the long term, according to the latest paper by James Hansen.
We are then introduced to Zeke Hausfauther, a contributor to the IPCC report, who says “It’s fair to say that recently many of us climate scientists have spent more time arguing with the doomers than with the deniers”. I dug a little to learn more about the fellow. Zeke is the typical paid climate scientist who spreads absolute non-sense, like the myth that “climate change stops at net zero”.
I recently wrote a thread about this on this subreddit. The gist of it is that the biggest contributor to climate change are the 1 trillion tons of CO2 already in the atmosphere, not current emissions. It can sound counter intuitive, but current emissions are keeping us cool because burning fossil fuels also produce aerosols which cool the planet by about 1°C. But unlike greenhouse gas, who stay in the atmosphere for thousands of years, aerosols only stay there for a few days/weeks. Net zero will therefore accelerate global warming and not stop it. Net zero is not even possible anyways since just to feed 8 billion people, you need fertilizers made with fossil fuels. And like we saw above, with current GHG concentrations, 10°C of warming are locked in.
We are then introduced to Guy McPherson, with whom many here must be familiar with. Guy claims that humans will be extinct within 10 years. I don’t want to enter in a debate about this claim or the person behind the quote, but knowing how much global warming there is in the pipeline, even if it’s not in 10 years, is it that crazy to believe that humanity won’t make it?
She then describes Guy McPherson as the type of conspiracy theorist who claim that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is downplaying the seriousness of the issue. Is it even a conspiracy theory at this point? The IPCC has consistently been downplaying the pace and severity of climate change. One good example from the link I just shared : “The IPCC has always confidently projected that the Arctic ice sheet was safe at least until 2050 or well beyond 2100.” How is that going?
We are then introduced to a man called Andrew Smith. I’ll leave the full quote because I believe that Andrew is completely right, and he is probably the sanest person quoted in this article.
That same year, the IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C was published too. The author quotes Hausfather again regarding that report, who says that “part of the problem is that climate targets — say, the goal to limit warming to 1.5C — have become interpreted by the public as climate thresholds, which would drive the planet into a “hothouse” state. In fact, scientists don’t believe there is anything unique about that temperature that will cause runaway tipping points; the landmark IPCC report merely aimed to show the risks of bad impacts are much higher at 2C than at 1.5.”
Again, Hausfather is spreading nonsense. First off, you can’t limit warming to 1.5°C or 2°C for God’s sake. Climate change is driven by GHG concentrations in the atmosphere. The study of paleoclimate has clearly shown that. During the Pliocene, 3 millions years ago, GHG concentrations were around 400ppm CO2e and temperatures were around 3-4°c. We are now at more than 500ppm CO2e, why do you think that it’s possible to limit warming to 1.5°C or 2°C?
The 1.5°C and 2°C objectives are an invention by people like William Nordhaus, an American economist from Yale University. They have no basis in science, it’s all based on what he thought capitalism could get away with. The idea was that we were only at 1°C of warming, that we still had a “carbon budget” and that we could keep emitting greenhouse gas for a while, for the sake of economic growth. He even got a Nobel Prize for economics in 2018 for being such a good defender of the status quo.
Funnily enough, Hausfather is a fellow at the Breakthrough Institute, founded by no other than Ted Nordhaus, William’s nephew. The Breakthrough Institute advocates for technological development, and increasing economic growth, through a combination of nuclear power and urbanization. While people are starting to cook to death, the Nordhaus family keeps its priorities straight : infinite economic growth!
The author then quotes, Kate Marvel, a climate scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute, who has said that while humans probably won’t go extinct due to climate change, “not going extinct” is a low bar. I hope that Kate has some solid advice for surviving in a +10°C world, because I frankly don’t. It’s funny that it’s pretty much always people with kids like Kate who spread hopium. I guess it’s easier than telling your toddler that all they will ever know is a dying world?
At the end, we learn that Youra corrected his way, rejected doomerism and embraced hopium. Congrats to Youra!
Now here is my advice. I don’t know how long civilization or humanity have, or how exactly this will end, but I can see the ship going down with the next few years or decades. We are beyond screwed. The first step is to accept this reality, and reject the lies and the hopium spread by governments, activists, paid scientists, newspapers, business, etc. You may feel terrorized by this, you may feel numb, powerless, and it’s a completely normal reaction to have, many have gone through this in this space. Then it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with the time you have left. I would personally recommend not having kids, preparing at least a little, both physically (storing food, water, etc.) and mentally, not working too hard, and just doing what you enjoy most while you can.

Andrew Smith, a retired engineer from Yorkshire, England, is slightly turned off by the term “doomer.” It provokes, he says, a sense of being on the fringes of society, or visions of doomsday preppers filling their bunkers with canned food. “For me, a climate doomer is simply a person who’s taken a look at the peer-reviewed science, taken stock of the natural world around them, and come to a conclusion,” he wrote in a message via Twitter. There is some discussion on the forum about using AI to detect whether or not something is a deepfake, and perhaps some trust in anti-deepfake bots to be better resourced etc. in this arms race. But could we give ourselves a bit of breathing room here?Could it be incredibly valuable to accelerate desensitization to deepfakes? Or at least make people more aware of them by using humor?
It seems like a real risk that someone eventually creates a convincing and harmful deepfake, a la current President saying, "America has launched nuclear weapons against Russia." Or vice versa or literally anything bad, with voice and video, that to our eyes is Very Real and Convincingly Terrible.

Reflections on applications, rejections and feedback

Hello, this is my first post to this sub!
I'm having a problem with the return to home feature on my DJI mini 2. I've only officially made a dozen flights and for the first couple of them it was working fine. Unfortunately, I didn't notice if it was specifically because it was because of the change of venue but as I've been flying it in my backyard, it hasn't been working. I will press the button on my remote or my cell and either way it will land straight down.
My cell reads that I have GPS and that I have a home point and I've checked the UAV forecast to make sure everything is copasetic.
So is there something I can fix in my settings or is my backyard a death trap or both?

U.S. Treasury yields rose for a second straight session on Tuesday as the recent banking turmoil receded, refocusing investors on the threat of further rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. And stock investors seem to have suddenly found themselves in a rather awkward position: Having been jittery during the banking crisis, now that fears have abated, they fear a rebound in Treasury yields that could end the rally in technology stocks...
Market data showed Treasury yields across maturities were broadly higher overnight, although gains were less than on Monday. By late afternoon in New York, the 2-year yield was up 9.1 basis points at 4.095 per cent, the 5-year yield was up 10 basis points at 3.689 per cent, the 10-year yield was up 4.5 basis points at 3.574 per cent and the 30-year yield was up 1.4 basis points at 3.774 per cent.
As fears of a banking crisis abated, the 2-year yield appeared to have regained the 4 per cent mark this week. And the rise in Treasury yields certainly puts pressure on U.S. stocks, particularly technology stocks, because higher rates make the future profits promised by growth companies less attractive.
In the stock market, the three major U.S. indexes generally retreated overnight, with the tech-dominated Nasdaq falling the most. The Nasdaq composite index fell 52.76 points, or 0.4 percent, to 11,716.08. The S&P 500 fell 6.26 points, or 0.2%, to 3,971.27. The Dow fell 37.83 points, or 0.1 percent, to 32,394.25.
Many investors had speculated earlier this month that the high-profile failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank would test the Fed's inflation-fighting resolve, industry insiders said. But easing concerns about the global banking sector entering the week prompted investors to renew bets that interest rates could rise further and stay high for a while.
"Treasury yields are now up for the second day in a row, and technology is one of the laggards of the day, a sector that tends to fall when yields rise," said Brian Levitt, global market strategist at Invesco.
On the news front, the latest speech from the "King of the eagles" inside the Fed, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, remained hawkish overnight. Mr Bullard said financial stress had increased in recent weeks as a result of the banking crisis, but could be managed through regulatory policy rather than interest rates.
Mr. Bullard repeated his view from Friday that continued prudent macro policy can contain financial stress, while appropriate monetary policy can continue to put downward pressure on inflation. Mr Bullard raised his forecast for peak interest rates from 5.375 per cent to 5.625 per cent and stressed that it would be "catastrophic" for the Fed to abandon its 2 per cent inflation target.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden said the crisis involving U.S. regional banks was easing and that he had done everything possible to address it with existing institutions, but that it was clear the crisis was "not over yet." Biden also said the administration could take more executive actions in the future if necessary.
Something special about the current market
Of the U.S. Treasury market's performance at the start of the week, Padhraic Garvey, head of research for the Americas at ING, said, "As we get deeper into 2023, the larger narrative theme will move toward downward pressure on interest rates, as we will most likely get closer to a rate cut."
"But in the very near term, I wouldn't be surprised if the market starts to shift its focus from the bank story to the fundamentals, and the fundamentals remain pretty strong. [The data] will tend to be weaker, but it's still pretty strong, we still have an inflation battle to fight and technically we're still in a rate hike environment."
For now, interest rate markets are still pricing in roughly a 50-50 chance that the Fed will or won't raise rates in May.
On Wednesday, Fed officials announced another quarter-point interest rate hike, but in the monetary policy statement accompanying the decision, the forward guidance subtly shifted, not saying that "sustained rate increases will be appropriate" but that "further tightening may be appropriate". The word "likely" has been interpreted as opening the door to a pause.
The closely watched spread between two-year and 10-year yields was last around 52 basis points upside down on Tuesday. Us economic data in the coming weeks will no doubt be closely watched for fresh signs of an economic slowdown, with the impact of tougher lending standards brought on by the banking crisis expected to come into sharper focus.
Friday's U.S. price index for February is expected to be the next major focus, with U.S. stock volatility measures currently pricing in a volatile day. The data, seen as the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, was released at the same time as personal income and spending data for the month.
Economists now expect the core price index, which excludes food and fuel, to rise 0.4 percent in February from the previous month, according to the median of U.S. media surveys. Open Snow and Forecast. normal snow and place Snow canvas, link summon Red Sunrise and special snow back, banish snow for the canvas's effect and add cloud, use forecast and place the canvas of your choice and extra normal summon the cloud with forecast's effect, link the canvases and red away and summon rainbow, then bring back the canvases with cloud's effect. You now have a negate if your opponent drops imperm in draw and another one when snow comes back. But life's sad and you won't get that starlight Ariseheart, so you open snow and cloud. Normal summon Snow and place the snow canvas, special Red and bring back snow to banish it with red's effect and add Forecast, then you do the same things as before. I love the the weather painters, such unique designs and mechanincs, it's so sad that the deck is overshadowed by floodgates and the struggle that is getting to rainbow and having materials for it. Obviously a Link 1 is not the most interesting or original custom card but hey, rainbow can't be the only one in the extra deck. |

Title. Whether it be a remix of something the series has once done before or something entirely new, what are some creative gameplay ideas for a map element that shakes up the formula? A few ideas I had are:
Haze/Mist - Think a variant on Fog of War, inspired by the idea of an "ignorance" run. Haze would essentially be an area that gives some passive avoid bonuses, you can see where enemies are and due to their silhouette see their general type (i.e. Cavalry, Armor, Flying, Infantry) and move freely around, but you cannot check their stats or inventory and only get "???" for your combat forecasts. On the flipside, enemies who can target more than one of your units in Haze attack completely randomly. I think it could make for one or two interesting maps, and also be rather fun if both the player and enemy has staves/abilities that let them create areas of it during battles.
Passage Collapsing - In certain small chokepoints, there could be areas on either side that are basically breakable walls. Breaking both collapses the area, making the once thin passage completely impassable OR turns it into a much tougher obstacle units would need to break through. Could be fun for escape maps or chase maps (i.e. defeat a unit trying to reach an escape point). This could also be applied to cutting bridges across cliffs or cutting down trees to create an obstruction along a thin road (in which case the adjacent tiles lose their forest avoid bonuses, or at least have them reduced).

The thread went viral and many more people came out claiming to have received the same one. This prompted people all over the internet to get involved and help solve the mystery. However, there was never a real conclusion, and after receiving an overwhelming amount of publicity and even death threats, Ty and many others linked to the thread deactivated their accounts. Many people claim the whole thing was an elaborate hoax or even an alternate reality game, but I am not satisfied with those answers. Even stranger, in the 2013 film Man of Steel (released prior to the vanishing), a trident shaped UFO that resembles the Malaysian Airlines logo crashes off the coast of Australia, just like MH370 did. The movie shows the coordinates of the UFO being 37° S 76° E. Here we see more numerology at work. But it gets weirder. On March 13, 2018, a twitter user who went by the name strayedaway, or Ty, posted a thread about a creepy voicemail he received regarding the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The thread went viral and many more people came out claiming to have received the same one. This prompted people all over the internet to get involved and help solve the mystery. However, there was never a real conclusion, and after receiving an overwhelming amount of publicity and even death threats, Ty and many others linked to the thread deactivated their accounts. Many people claim the whole thing was an elaborate hoax or even an alternate reality game, but I am not satisfied with those answers. My flight time is 12:30pm - 1:55pm
This is a really big step for me. But I’m starting to get preflight anxiety. Worried about the really weird weather we’ve been having lately and I’m unsure of the forecast throughout but I know it’s raining at the destination. The unknown starts to make my panic/anxiety thoughts begin.
Any support is very much appreciated. This subreddit has helped me to the point of even being able to take the step to go alone. Which I never thought I would book. So thank you. ♥️
