2023.03.29 12:59 deerdn Absurd prediction: Henry Lasso will be AFC Richmond's striker in a flashforward/after timeskips

was thinking out loud on the Discord when I had this absurd epiphany.
Brendan Hunt's favorite player = Thierry Henry
Goalkeeper = Thierry Zoreaux
Striker = Henry Lasso
Farthest back player = Thierry
Farthest forward player = Henry
the biggest enabler for me with this theory is that the show has set up Michelle to be a "bad guy" character, to my surprise. having an affair with the marriage counselor while married to Ted. crying in S1 not because she "couldn't fall back in love" with Ted, but because she's feeling guilty of being the piece of work that she is. the whole Oklahoma thing being the word they agreed to tell the truth to each other, yet she betrayed that agreement/trust because she's been lying the whole time.
all this will remove a lot of the sympathy card the audience would have had for Michelle, because the whole narrative of it's not her fault for falling out of love, she doesn't deserve to see her son move to London, etc. goes out the window.
thanks for coming to my TedxLassoTalk

2023.03.29 12:51 Smack-works Harry Potter and the Third Impact of the Rings

Harry Potter and the Third Impact of the Rings
This is not a crossover fanfic, this is a character analysis.
I'm going to compare Evangelion characters to characters in other media, describe their "archetypes".
My analysis isn't deep, but it is wide. What does it mean? You can read and find out.
I swear, this post wasn't generated by AI.

Basics

I describe a character type as a list of dynamics:
  • Dynamic 1. ...
  • Dynamic 2. ...
  • Dynamic 3. ...
  • And so on.
(Doesn't matter what the word "dynamic" means in general, specific examples are all that matters.)
However, it shouldn't be a list of random dynamics. The dynamics have to overlap, be somewhat equivalent and have a common theme. Here's a made up simplified example:
  • Dynamic 1. The character likes to have fun with friends.
  • Dynamic 2. Likes to work on projects with friends.
  • Dynamic 3. Likes to help friends.
  • Dynamic 4. Likes to make new friends.
As you see, those dynamics overlap, mean basically the same thing and have a common theme "life + friends". And yet those descriptions are not 100% equivalent, each dynamic adds new information and context.
The goal of the post is to experience how overlapping dynamics can add up into interesting character archetypes.

Terminology

This bit of terminology is going to be important:
  • "Outside world" = something that affects almost everyone.
  • "Personal world" = something that's important to a specific person (including personal relationships). "Feeling sad" is an event in the personal world. But "falling in love" and "being in a love affair" and "going through a breakup" are events in the personal world too.
All this may depend on context, though.
Now... let's get in the robot, shall we?

Gendo

I think Gendo Ikari is similar to those characters: Father (Fullmetal Alchemist), Fasbender's Magnetto) (X-Men), Eiri Masami/God (Serial Experiments Lain), Gru (Despicable Me), Hao (Shaman King), Specter (Ape Escape), Boogiepop Phantom (Boogiepop series).
This type of characters is created by those dynamics:
  • Dynamic 1. The character is a part of a system, but is kind of isolated from other nodes of the system. By "system" I mean an organization or society or something like this.
  • Dynamic 2. The character is an element of a system, but is a distinct element (at least in their own opinion). Maybe they are high up in the chain of the system. Or maybe they have a big opinion of themselves.
  • Dynamic 3. And the system itself is isolated from the regular world.
  • Dynamic 4. And the character doesn't have much of a "personal world" - like, not much slack for just relaxing with friends and family.
  • Dynamic 5. And the character is "philosophically isolated": has an attitude which isolates them from others, the truth and being grounded in reality.
The overarching theme is "isolation". The character is isolated inside themselves (no personal world). Isolated in a system. The system itself is isolated. And it doesn't end there...

Detailed explanation of examples

Dynamic 1. The character is a part of a system, but is kind of isolated from other nodes of the system.
  • Applies to almost everyone. Gendo works on Seele (they are above everyone), but is actually independent of them.
Dynamic 2. The character is an element of a system, but is a distinct element (at least in their own opinion). Maybe they are high up in the chain of the system. Or maybe they have a big opinion of themselves.
  • Applies to almost everyone.
  • Father created a family out of his own sins... but he cares only about himself. He wants to be "the ultimate being".
Dynamic 3. And the system itself is isolated from the regular world.
  • Gru is a part of the market of evil geniuses (or whatever). Then an agent of a good organization. Both organizations are isolated from the regular world.
  • Gendo is deep into "secret organizations" or "organizations with secrets" or "obscure organizations". Hao has an organization of evil shamans. Magnetto has an organization of evil mutants. Specter has an organization of hectic monkeys. Eiri has followers or people he uses as tools. Boogiepop is complicated: they fight (???) the shadowy Towa organization, but sometimes align with Towa (???).
Dynamic 4. And the character doesn't have much of a "personal world" - like, not much slack for just relaxing with friends and family.
  • Applies to almost everyone.
  • Gendo isolates from people. Gendo is isolated from his wife and son.
  • Hao has followers and some close connections. Hao is isolated from others and his past through reincarnations. Also isolated from his family and his twin brother.
Dynamic 5. And the character is "philosophically isolated": has an attitude which isolates them from others, the truth and being grounded in reality.
  • Gendo bad.
  • Father lacks genuine connections. Gets humiliated for his insane ambitions based on nothing. And locked away.
  • Eiri (God) doesn't have a human body or human connection. He's humiliated for this. And reset back to a regular human.
  • Magnetto and Hao hate regular humans.
  • In the first movie), Gru is supposed to be a supervillian and it distracts him from his family life. In the anime, Boogiepop reverses this dynamic: everyone but them are isolated in the worlds of their fantasies.
Sorry for a very one-sided, judgemental and biased analysis.

Kaworu

I think Kaworu Nagisa is similar to Paddington (Paddington Bear) and Kronk (The Emperor's New Groove).
This type of characters is created by those dynamics:
  • Dynamic 1. Very resourceful, but kind of lost in the outside world
  • Dynamic 2. Interested in exploring the world, but detached from their own world
  • Dynamic 3. Very disciplined, but the reality around is chaotic.
  • Dynamic 4. Easily connects to others, but is kind of stripped from connections.
Overarching theme is "contrast between worlds".
In case of Kaworu and Paddington this contrast comes from them coming from another world. In case of Kronk this comes from occupying a very constraining position (henchman of an evil witch). And in all cases the contrast is also coming from a specific attitude/way of thinking.

Misato

I think Misato Katsuragi is similar to those characters: Katara) (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Ginny (Harry Potter), Sayaka (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Casca (Berserk), Trinity) (The Matrix), Arwen (The Lord of the Rings), Rose DeWitt#Fictional_characters) (Titanic 1997), Bo Peep) (Toy Story), Ericka Van Helsing (Hotel Transylvania), Elizabeth Swann (Pirates of the Caribbean), Sophie) (Howl's Moving Castle), Wanda Maximoff) (Marvel Cinematic Universe).
This type of characters is created by those dynamics:
  • Dynamic 1. Strong, but "lost" in the power system of the world.
  • Dynamic 2. Has an important "lost" relationship. Or a relationship with a-character-very-important-in-the-outside-world. Or with the main character.
  • Dynamic 3. Relationship is threatened by the outside world.
  • Dynamic 4. Gets [almost] crushed by the outside world, "dies" or witnesses death of someone close to her. Or is just trapped by the outside world.
Overarching theme is "power and [very personal] conflict with the outside world".

Detailed explanation of examples

Most of the dynamics are pretty self-explanatory. Let's get straight to the 4th dynamic.
Dynamic 4. Gets [almost] crushed by the outside world, "dies" or witnesses death of someone close to her. Or is just trapped by the outside world.
  • Misato dies; "sees" Kaji die; sees kids die, get injured and traumatized; her father dies to save her. Trinity dies two times; sees Neo die one time ("now get up"). Katara looks dead in a heart-breaking scene; her mother dies to save her; Jet dies; Zuko gets zapped by lighting to save her; sees Aang die one time (until he dies the second time). Arwen almost dies; sees her mother losing her mind after torture; loses immortality; sees Aragorn die peacefully. Sayaka "dies"; then 100% dies along with her new friend; sees her love disabled by an accident. Rose DeWitt sees her love die to save her; her "arranged husband" kills himself in a completely unrelated situation. Casca sees her past love tortured; sees her friends die; gets sexually assaulted by her past love and loses her mind.
  • Erika tries to kill her future love multiple times. Then breaks free from the control of her great-grandfather and prejudices.
  • Elizabeth Swann: kills Jack Sparrow; her could-be-husband dies; Will Turner dies 7 minutes after marriage. Sophie: rapidly ages into an old lady; dumps water on Howl's heart, thinks she killed him; sees her love turned into a monster and dead inside; and that scene "Is he dead?" "No, he's daijoubu"; kisses dead Turnip and he isn't dead anymore.
  • Ginny goes on a killing spree and "dies" in her first school year; her lover (Harry Potter) needs to die and partially succeeds. Was mind-controlled. Goes from a shy girl to an absolute boss.
  • Katara becomes super-strong despite tragic past, being stuck on the South Pole and facing prejudices; Katara humiliates her mother's killer. Rose DeWitt is constrained by financial status and an arranged marriage, but breaks free and lives a free life. Elizabeth is "a 21st century girl trapped in an 18th century world. She . . . starts out as a damsel in distress and then kicks butt, so what's not to like?" (c.) Keira Knightley. Sophie is trapped in the world of crazy magic and curses and conditions and war... until she isn't. Bo Peep breaks free from the idea of "toy owners". Arwen almost fades away, literally or metaphorically, because of the evil-ness of the world and Sauron's influence. Sayaka gets pressured and corrupted by the outside world. Casca gets control over her life, but then gets broken. Misato is constrained by the world.
Last but not least:
  • Wanda has had enough, she goes on a multiverse killing spree after: her brother dies two times; her love (Vision) dies two times; her kids are "taken away" from her. She was threatened by the world all the time; then she trapped a village for her fantasy world; then she started owning the multiverse.

Asuka

I think Asuka Langley is similar to those characters: Knuckles (Sonic the Hedgehog, a Knuckles trailer), Kyoko Sakura (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist), Zelgadis Graywords (Slayers), Boromir (The Lord of the Rings), Winter Soldier) (Marvel Cinematic Universe), Nicholas D. Wolfwood (Trigun), Joaquin Phoenix's Joker). And Legion) (Mass Effect).
This type of characters is created by those dynamics:
  • Dynamic 1. Lost something society-related. Or taken away by society. (Society = outside world.)
  • Dynamic 2. Was "corrupted" by something: was deceived or became bitter or was pressured into something, for example. Or lives in a world of corruption.
  • Dynamic 3. Lost previous personal world. Or parts of it.
  • Dynamic 4. Has strong appearance/identity, despite all the losses and doubts and pressure. Despite their role/identity being attacked and undermined.
  • Dynamic 5. Their goal is a bit misaligned with / tangential to the other's good guys' or bad guys' goals.
  • Dynamic 6. Despite being a closed person, the character is ready to open up and ready for self-sacrifice. (/being saved by someone's self-sacrifice)
Overarching theme is "we live in a society".
Or "personal power and corruption/destruction [of worlds]".

Detailed explanation of examples

Dynamic 1. Lost something society-related. Or taken away by society. (Society = outside world.)
  • Edward lost normal family (father, mother, brother's body). Kyoko lost her status and her family. Boromir is on the verge of letting down his people, he wants to defend them more than anything else. In the second Sonic movie), Knuckles is the last echidna of his tribe. Zelgadis lost his family and his human body and his status.
Dynamic 2. Was "corrupted" by something: was deceived or became bitter or was pressured into something, for example. Or lives in a world of corruption.
  • Zelgadis: deceived. Knuckles: deceived to fight against Sonic. Winter Soldier is brainwashed by Hydra to be evil. Kyoko: became bitter and cynical. Boromir: pressured into being tempted by the ring. Nicholas D. Wolfwood was raised by bad people and eventually fights them. Edward lives in a country of corruption, "he is trying to do good within a morally questionable organization" (c.) Joel Pearce. Joker lives in a society.
Dynamic 3. Lost previous personal world. Or parts of it.
  • Already covered that. I'll add about Asuka: she lost her personal world and she fights with the outside world to prove her worth.
Dynamic 4. Has strong appearance/identity, despite all the losses and doubts and pressure. Despite their role/identity being attacked and undermined.
  • Knuckles is the last of his tribe, his role/identity is attacked. Boromir has to defend his people, if he fails, he's a bad warden. Kyoko's thoughts about her role in her family turned out to be wrong; later her lifestyle/philosophy got challenged by Sayaka. Asuka acts tough despite mounting mental illnesses. They put Joker down, but Joker keeps on joking.
  • Edward is the older brother, and yet people think he's short! ""Shorty?! Could a shorty do this?!" On a more serious note, Edward is guilt-ridden. But has the reputation of a sarcastic cynic.
  • In the 1998 anime, Nicholas D. Wolfwood is a priest raised by a bad priest with "I must kill" philosophy challenged by Vash.
Dynamic 5. Their goal is a bit misaligned with / tangential to the other's good guys' or bad guys' goals.
  • Edward wants to get the Philosopher's Stone to get back his brother's body, this goal is different from the "true mission goal" of the show (= defeat Father). Knuckles' goal is tangential to both good and bad guys. Zelgadis... "searching for a way to regain his humanity, Zelgadis continues to travel with Lina and company out of convenience, not friendship.". Boromir's goal turns out to be misaligned with the good guys' goal, but it's not evil in of itself. Joker sows chaos without a goal to do so.
  • Asuka is about being the best and professional and "like an adult". Not exactly about "saving humanity in this particular situation".
Dynamic 6. Despite being a closed person, the character is ready to open up and ready for self-sacrifice. (/being saved by someone's self-sacrifice)
  • Boromir (self-sacrifice + confession), Kyoko, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Edward (sacrificed his body parts; then his ability to perform alchemy) and Knuckles (in this movie) he has to save Sonic right after Sonic saves him) .
I can't justify the inclusion of Legion). They are tangential to the good guys, but decide to help. They have an unintentionally funny attitude "Legion lacks the concept of a sense of humor".
https://preview.redd.it/jeg7jkefonqa1.png?width=1645&format=png&auto=webp&s=20817957a9201425864b5fd37698015eb31bb959

Shinji

I think those characters are similar to Shinji Ikari: Harry Potter) (Harry Potter), Frodo (The Lord of the Rings), Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece), Rock Lee (Naruto), Saitama (One-Punch Man), Heinz Doofenshmirtz (Phineas and Ferb), Jim Moriarty (BBC Sherlock), Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean), Princess Yue (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Asami (The Legend of Korra), Cassandra (Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure), Evelyn Deavor (Incredibles 2), Griffith) (Berserk). And even... even... Sans) Undertale.
This type of characters is created by those dynamics:
  • Dynamic 1. This character is like a "side character" sucked up into the bigger action.
  • Dynamic 2. This character is lead to action by the outside world. [Getting in the robot, going into Mordor.] Or lead to revenge by the world / against the world.
  • Dynamic 2 (more). Sometimes this character is lead to a very specific action: self-sacrifice.
  • Dynamic 3. This character is very polite or chill even if the outside world is hostile. Not to mention that the character is very smart, observant and compassionate. Even when compassion is fake.
  • Dynamic 4. Personal world of this character overlaps with / connects to the outside world in interesting ways.
  • Dynamic 5. This character may combine unbreakable power of will with... a lack of will/agenda. Can start off as below average in strength and be lonely - but still be a serious threat/factor.
The overarching theme is "contradictory connection to the outside world".

Detailed explanation of examples

We're here for a long deep dive. Or rather for a long WIDE dive.
Dynamic 1. This character is like a "side character" sucked up into the bigger action.
  • Shinji is just a teen suddenly called up by his father and forced into a robot.
  • Frodo is just a hobbit suddenly given a mission by a wizard.
  • Harry... you are a wizard, Harry! Most of the time Harry gets into an adventure "completely accidentally".
  • Saitama behaves as if he's just a regular guy who reacts to regular inconveniences. Perceived as a regular hero.
  • Rock Lee literally is a side character. Asami is a non-bender engineebusinesswoman who gets into a company of benders and deeper.
  • Cassandra starts as a handmaiden. Jack Sparrow is like a random trickster despite being one of the most influential people in his verse.
  • Jim Moriarty is a complicated case. He is a supervillain and he has global schemes, but at the time he's just a consultant without an agenda who's simply bored. Unlike TDK Jocker's), Jim's motivations are framed in more passive/less aggressive ways.
Dynamic 2. This character is lead to action by the outside world. [Getting in the robot, going into Mordor.] Or lead to revenge by the world / against the world.
  • Shinji, Frodo, Harry, Princess Yue are all pushed to action by the outside world.
  • Heinz Doofenshmirtz and Evelyn Deavor want revenge against the world. Shinji kind of does take "revenge" against the world when his wish to eliminate pain and loneliness gets granted.
  • Jim Moriarty is pushed to action by the boredom of the world and fairytale narratives ("hero vs. villain"). As if Jim "takes revenge" against the world for being boring and fairytale-like.
  • You can say Cassandra does take revenge against the world: against her Fate, her role, against everything's that happened and against Rapunzel with her royal world.
  • Luffy seeks most freedom in the not-very-free world. Also he cares about his friends very much. This sets him on the path of maximal collision with the world.
Dynamic 2 (more). Sometimes this character is lead to a very specific action: self-sacrifice.
  • Harry, Frodo and Princess Yue count. Rock Lee uses techniques which may lead to self-sacrifice (forced to use them to keep up with others). Shinji is a complicated case: he's pushed by Misato and Eva-01 right in the center of the Third Impact, and the Third Impact is like a sacrifice of everything and everyone. Jim Moriarty kills himself, but it wasn't forced.
  • Griffith tries to kill himself, but then kills everyone else. This was heavily provoked by the outside world (not justified though), because Griffith was tortured and his dreams were crushed.
Dynamic 3. This character is very polite or chill even if the outside world is hostile. Not to mention that the character is very smart, observant and compassionate. Even when compassion is fake.
  • Doofenshmirtz is the most polite villain ever! Jack Sparrow doesn't hold grudges even after being "killed". Saitama is fundamentally chill, obviously (because of his infinite power). Frodo barely snaps while wearing the most vile evil artifact ever. Harry has one CAPSLOCK period, but he's fundamentally chill overall.
  • In general, this dynamic applies to all mentioned characters.
Dynamic 4. Personal world of this character overlaps with / connects to the outside world in interesting ways.
  • Till the very end, Harry Potter remains just a normal teen in the company of friends. Yet he's the Chosen One.
  • Till the very end, Frodo is just a hobbit in the company of his friend Sam. Yet they are on the world-saving mission.
  • Till the very EoE, Shinji remains just a teen (not) sorting out his problems. Yet he regularly defends the world like a fricking superhero.
  • Saitama is just chilling! Despite being the most powerful being. Luffy is ready fight against the entire world and the world government just because of his friends. Asami has a fairly normal life, but her girlfriend is the Avatar.
  • Jack Sparrow is a part of multiple stories, multiple groups of people and "social circles" at the same time. An overlap of overlaps! He's a significant Pirate Captain, an important "political" figure; he has his silly adventures with his crew; he's friends with Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann (a part of their personal story); he has a ton of other "friends" (like Tia Dalma) and he's a womanizer.
Dynamic 5. This character may combine unbreakable power of will with... a lack of will/agenda. Can start off as below average in strength and be lonely - but still be a serious threat/factor.
  • Harry can resist the mind-controlling spell. Frodo does the hardest mission "just because". Luffy is goofy but unbreakable. Rock Lee is a genius of hard work. Sans is both "lazy" and DETERMINED to break you. Many are determined enough to disregard death. Shinji is perceived as weak, but he keeps doing his job alongside "strong" characters. While remaining one of the most mentally stable!
https://preview.redd.it/lsqlda6konqa1.png?width=1027&format=png&auto=webp&s=0ea54914c3c0080cde6f116617ba2f1bbfafa90d

Two more examples

Griffith) is an unusual case. Does he fit with the characters above? I think yes:
  • He starts as a very "side character" compared to important figures in the Berserk world.
  • His goal is formulated mostly in terms of the outside world. To rule, to have a kingdom. "Griffith's goal has always been intrinsically tied to humanity and politics." (c.) PixelDemise
  • He's polite and... "chill". Great charisma.
  • On one hand, he is immersed in the world of politics. On another hand, he is in the campy company of the Hawk. On one hand, he dreams about a kingdom. On another hand, he forgets his dreams because of Guts. = Outside world interestingly overlaps with the personal world.
  • Outside world pushes him to the ultimate action: sacrificing everyone for his dream.
Griffith fits the overarching theme of "contradictory connection to the outside world".
...
Sans) is one of the farthest outliers, but he's got this:
  • An extremely intelligent and observant "side character".
  • Forced to fight by a very strange world. Against a very strange world. By "strange" I mean resetting, consuming timelines.
  • Always "polite" (on a deep level), i.e. mostly unfazed by the most strange and most horrible events. Never rules out your last chance to be a good person.
  • Unconditional compassion, even if it was caused by a promise. Unbreakable will and seeming laziness. The weakest monster and the most overpowered threat. Lonely, but has a ton of friends.
  • Combines a regular citizen and... a science researcher / holder of esoteric knowledge.

10 signs you're an Ikari male

Patrick Bateman) from American Psycho is worth mentioning, even if he fits less:
  • He's like a "side character"/a regular person. And he's a threat.
  • You can say his motivation is defined by the outside world. He wants to be cool, wants to "fit in".
  • He isn't polite and chill, even when he doesn't do horrible things.
  • Outside world interestingly overlaps with his personal world: his personal world is nothing but an empty shell shaped by society.
  • Has the will/the impulsiveness to do despicable things. And at the same time lacks any real goal.
I think this character fits the overarching theme of "contradictory connection to the outside world", BUT strongly overlaps with the theme of "isolation". If you mixed Shinji and Gendo, you could get Bateman.
Bateman isn't a big enough threat; his personal world is too nonexistent; there's no important events in his outside world. [compare to Jim Moriarty, Jack Sparrow and Sans]
Sadly, I'm not familiar enough with Luigi to analyze him. Interesting what we're going to see in the new movie.
Thank you for reading this post. Have you felt anything about the way different dynamics add up into characters?

Jeanne had understood that she would be a big sister soon and was excited about this even if her parents had taken her for a baby.
“I hope you don’t mind not being our only baby anymore”
She rolled her eyes. Why would she be jealous of her little sister or her little brother? She was rather ecstatic by the news and couldn't wait to play with the child.
The announcement of a future child had arrived with that on all the television channels of the resurgence of crime in their neighborhood with the birth of many gangs.
Territory wars were legion and were now part of the daily life of the inhabitants of the district who, when the shots broke out, would take refuge in their houses hoping that the stray bullets would not reach them.
In this chaotic environment, being a policeman had become a real challenge, but James was not worried about it. He thought he just had to be careful and everything would be fine. This is how he was able to reassure his little family and went out every morning without problems.
Amanda had no choice but to believe in the good fortune of her husband, anyway, he always got away with it.
She was almost 7 months pregnant and everything seemed to be shaping up auspiciously for the future of the Clark family. A few months before, James had finally taken the plunge and brought Amanda before the priest and the mayor to formalize their union. It was the happiest day of their lives and it was Jeanne who had brought the rings. The neighbors and colleagues of James were present and had celebrated with them these 11 years of relationship which resulted in the marriage.
Jeanne, now a schoolboy, sat caressing her mother's large belly, the latter caressing the ring on her finger. Happiness could be read on her face and Jeanne was happy that their family was so close.
"What are you going to call her? We now know it's a girl, I suggest Emma"
“Emma? Haha your dad wanted Jamie and I wanted Amandine so I think for the sake of fairness Emma would be best too” Jeanne jumped for joy but her mother stopped her with her hand.
“So go for Emma but first we have to talk to dad about it, you understand? »
“He will agree anyway, Emma is the prettiest name there is”
"I like it when you talk about your sister like that, I know you're going to like each other a lot"
“I already love her mum… I want to protect her”
Amanda stroked the top of her daughter's head before glancing at the clock noticing that it was getting really late and her husband still hadn't arrived.
“Dad is late tonight”
Amanda doesn't answer keeping a worried look at the clock a bad feeling flooding her mind. She put her hand on her chest, her heart clenching painfully inside her without knowing the reason. It was strange this feeling of anguish overwhelmed her as she stroked her belly.
Jeanne, who hadn't taken her eyes off her, frowned, she paid particular attention to the clock, then to her mother, and went into the kitchen to bring her some water.
"Calm down mum you know that with all that the police have to deal with in the neighborhood it cannot be ruled out that dad is working overtime"
Amanda smiled at her daughter; she had guessed her concern and was trying to comfort her. She was not fooled she knew that her daughter was also worried about her father and just like her she also knew that if it was just over time he would have called to at least reassure them knowing his fragile state.
She swallowed the wrong way, no she shouldn't be so pessimistic about the reasons for his delay, he was certainly going to be home late tonight and she shouldn't worry either Jeanne or Emma. She giggled Emma quickly adopted this cute name for her unborn daughter. Either go for Emma.
The hours passed and staring at the front door, the mother and daughter continued to hope to see the door handle turn and the father of the family pass his step. Amanda had asked Jeanne to go rest but the latter was far too stubborn and had decided that if her mother was waiting for her father she would also do the same no matter if she had to be late for school the next day.
“Besides, if you need a glass of water, I will be better able to get you some quickly” Having convinced her mother in this way, Jeanne remained at her mother's side, who she had to admit appreciated the fact of not being alone. She is sure that if she had been alone she would have already had a nervous breakdown.
It was almost 2 a.m. and her husband was still away. Now she was afraid, her daughter had ended up falling asleep, fatigue having got the better of her, she had put a blanket over her and continued to wait for her husband.
She had the landline in hand having tried to call the police station but no one was telling her what she wanted to hear. The woman she had never stopped having was telling her in a dark voice or was it her imagination that her husband Agent James was still on patrol and that he would be there the next day?
She didn't want to have dark thoughts so she answered okay and hung up even if thirty minutes later she called back.
What put a flea in her ear was the politeness of the woman when she was only harassing her on the same subject, she is certain that if she were in her place she would have already asked her to stop to piss her off.
Exhausted both physically and mentally, she heard a knock at the door and stood up, gently removing Jeanne's head from her thighs. She wondered who would come knocking so early. It was certainly not her husband since the latter has the keys to the door.
Jeanne with her mother's movements woke up seeing her mother going to the door.
“Dad is home? »
Amanda still with her tender smile turned her around before shaking her head.
"No, not yet, rest a little longer, it's still early, I'll see who it is"
Jeanne nodded, she was still sleepy so she thought she should get some more sleep.
She rested her head on the sofa with her face turned towards the door, she could see two men with the same uniform as her father, he was handing a cap and a police uniform to her mother taking off their caps, they seemed pained as they said a few words to her mother and after that the latter collapsed on the ground, starting to cry while the two men supported her.
“We are sorry… sorry”
Could she hear from where she was?
She ran to her mother to support her and also ask her what was going on and the latter, no longer able to breathe normally, took her in her arms.
Jeanne's eyes widened as she heard those few horrible words from her mother's mouth.
“Dad is gone… he is gone forever”

Today's Reading, via Project Gutenberg:

X

The castle hall was empty and grey, only the autumn dusk in the Gothic window; and the shuffle of the octogenarian butler sounding very dismal as he pottered across the tessellated pavement. On learning from him that Mr Martyn was still writing, I wandered from the organ into the morning-room, and sat by the fire, waiting for Edward's footstep. It came towards me about half an hour afterwards, slow and ponderous, not at all like the step of the successful dramatist; and my suspicions that his third act was failing him were aggravated by his unwillingness to tell me about the alterations he was making in it. All he could tell me was that he had been in Maynooth last summer, and had heard the priests declaring that they refused to stultify themselves; and as the word seemed to him typical of the country he would put it frequently into the mouths of his politicians.
How drama was to arise out of the verb, to stultify, did not seem clear, and in the middle of my embarrassment he asked me where I had been all the afternoon, brightening up somewhat when I told him that I had been to Coole. In a curious detached way he is always eager for a gossip, and we talked of Yeats and Lady Gregory for a long time, and of our walk round the lake, Edward rousing from my description of the swans to ask me where I had left the poet.
At the gate.
Why didn't you ask him to stay for dinner? And while I sought for an answer, he added: Maybe it's just as well you didn't, for today is Friday and the salmon I was expecting from Galway hasn't arrived.
But Yeats and I aren't Catholics.
My house is a Catholic house, and those who don't care to conform to the rule—
Your dogmatism exceeds that of an Archbishop; and I told him that I had heard my father say that the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr McHale, had meat always on his table on Friday, and when asked how this was, answered that he didn't know who had gotten dispensations and who hadn't. Edward muttered that he was not to be taken in by such remarks about dispensations; he knew very well I had never troubled to ask for one.
Why should I, since I'm not a Catholic?
If you aren't a Catholic, why don't you become a Protestant?
In the first place, one doesn't become a Protestant, one discovers oneself a Protestant; and it seems to me that an Agnostic has as much right to eat meat on Friday as a Protestant.
Agnosticism isn't a religion. It contains no dogma.
It comes to this, then: that you're going to make me dine off a couple of boiled eggs. And I walked about the room, indignant, but not because I care much about my food—two eggs and a potato are more agreeable to me in intelligent society than grouse would be in stupid. But two eggs and a potato forced down my throat on a theological fork in a Gothic house that had cost twenty thousand pounds to build—two eggs and a potato, without hope of cheese! The Irish do not eat cheese, and I am addicted to it, especially to Double Gloucester. In my school-days that cheese was a wonderful solace in my life, but after leaving school I asked for it in vain, and gave up hope of ever eating it again. It was not till the 'nineties that a waiter mentioned it. Stilton, sir; Chester, Double Gloucester—Double Gloucester! You have Double Gloucester! I thought it extinct. You have it? Then bring it, I cried, and so joyfully that he couldn't drag himself from my sight. An excellent cheese, I told him, but somewhat fallen from the high standard it had assumed in my imagination. Even so, if there had been a slice of Double Gloucester in the larder at Tillyra, I should not have minded the absence of the salmon, and if Edward had pleaded that his servants would be scandalised to see any one who was supposed to be a Catholic eat meat on Fridays, I should have answered: But everybody knows I'm not a Catholic. I've written it in half a dozen books. And if Edward had said: But my servants don't read your books; I shall be obliged if you'll put up with fasting fare for once, I would have eaten an egg and a potato without murmur or remark. But to be told I must dine off two eggs and a potato, so that his conscience should not be troubled during the night, worried me, and I am afraid I cast many an angry look across the table. An apple pie came up and some custards, and these soothed me; he discovered some marmalade in a cupboard, and Edward is such a sociable being when his pipe is alight, that I forgave his theological prejudices for the sake of his aesthetic. We peered into reproductions of Fra Angelico's frescoes, and studied Leonardo's sketches for draperies. Edward liked Ibsen from the beginning, and will like him to the end, and Swift. But he cannot abide Schumann's melodies. We had often talked of these great men and their works, but never did he talk as delightfully as on that Friday evening right on into Saturday morning. Nor was it till Sunday morning that his soul began to trouble him again. As I was finishing breakfast, he had the face to ask me to get ready to go to Mass.
But, Edward, I don't believe in the Mass. My presence will be only—Will you hold your tongue, George?... and not give scandal, he answered, his voice trembling with emotion. Everybody knows that I don't believe in the Mass.
If you aren't a Catholic, why don't you become a Protestant? And he began pushing me from behind. I have told you before that one may become a Catholic, but one discovers oneself a Protestant. But why am I going to Gort? Because you had the bad taste to describe our church in A Drama in Muslin, and to make such remarks about our parish priest that he said, if you showed yourself in Ardrahan again, he'd throw dirty water over you. If you send me to Gort, I shall be able to describe Father ——'s church. Will you not be delaying? One word more, It isn't on account of my description of Father ——'s church that you won't take me to Ardrahan: the real reason is because, at your request, mind you, I asked Father —— not to spit upon your carpet when he came to dinner at Tillyra. You were afraid to ask a priest to refrain from any of his habits, and left the room. I only asked you to draw his attention to the spittoon. Which I did; but he said such things were only a botheration, and my admonitions on the virtue of cleanliness angered him so that he never—
You'll be late for Mass. And you, Whelan; now, are you listening to me? Do you hear me? You aren't to spare the whip. Away you go; you'll only be just in time. And you, Whelan, you're not to delay putting up the horse. Do you hear me?
Whelan drove away rapidly, and when I looked back I saw my friend hurrying across the park, tumbling into the sunk fence in his anxiety not to miss the Confiteor, and Whelan, who saw the accident, too, feared that the masther is after hurting himself. Happily this was not so. Edward was soon on his feet again, running across the field like a hare, the driver said—out of politeness, I suppose.
Hardly like a hare, I said, hoping to draw a more original simile from Whelan's rustic mind; but he only coughed a little, and shook up the reins which he held in a shapeless, freckled hand.
Do you like the parish priest at Gort better than Father —— at Ardrahan?
They're well matched, Whelan answered—a thick-necked, long-bodied fellow with a rim of faded hair showing under a bowler hat that must have been about the stables for years, collecting dust along the corn-bin and getting greasy in the harness-room. One reasoned that it must have been black once upon a time, and that Whelan must have been a young man long ago; and one reasoned that he must have shaved last week, or three weeks ago, for there was a stubble on his chin. But in spite of reason, Whelan seemed like something that had always been, some old rock that had lain among the bramble since the days of Finn MacCoole, and his sullenness seemed as permanent as that of the rocks, and his face, too, seemed like a worn rock, for it was without profile, and I could only catch sight of a great flabby ear and a red, freckled neck, about which was tied a woollen comforter that had once been white.
He answered my questions roughly, without troubling to turn his head, like a man who wishes to be left to himself; and acquiescing in his humour, I fell to thinking of Father James Browne, the parish priest of Carnacun in the 'sixties, and of the day that he came over to Moore Hall in his ragged cassock and battered biretta, with McHale's Irish translation of Homer under his arm, saying that the Archbishop had caught the Homeric ring in many a hexameter. My father smiled at the priest's enthusiasm, but I followed this tall, gaunt man, of picturesque appearance, whose large nose with tufted nostrils I remember to this day, into the Blue Room to ask him if the Irish were better than the Greek. He was a little loth to say it was not, but this rustic scholar did not carry patriotism into literature, and he admitted, on being pressed, that he liked the Greek better, and I listened to his great rotund voice pouring through his wide Irish mouth while he read me some eight or ten lines of Homer, calling my attention to the famous line that echoes the clash of the wave on the beach and the rustle of the shingle as the wave sinks back. My curiosity about McHale's translation interested him in me, and it was arranged soon after between him and my father that he should teach me Latin, and I rode a pony over every morning to a thatched cottage under ilex-trees, where the pleasantest hours of my childhood were spent in a parlour lined with books from floor to ceiling, reading there a little Virgil, and persuading an old priest into talk about Quintilian and Seneca. One day he spoke of Propertius, and the beauty of the name led me to ask Father James if I might read him, and not receiving a satisfactory answer, my curiosity was stimulated and Caesar studied diligently for a month.
Shall I know enough Latin in six months to read Propertius? It will be many years before you will be able to read him. He is a very difficult writer. Could Martin Blake read Propertius?
Martin Blake was Father James's other pupil, and these Blakes are neighbours of ours, and live on the far side of Carnacun. Father James was always telling me of the progress Martin was making in the Latin language, and I was always asking Father James when I should overtake him, but he held out very little hope that it would be possible for me ever to outdo Martin in scholarship. He may have said this because he could not look upon me as a promising pupil, or he may have been moved by a hope to start a spirit of emulation in me. He was a wise man, and the reader will wonder how it was that, with such a natural interest in languages and such excellent opportunities, I did not become a classical scholar; the reader's legitimate curiosity shall be satisfied.

2023.03.29 12:48 Competitive-Toe8253 How popular are other ideologies in Morocco besides monarchism ?

I have visited Morocco all my life, 17 times on holiday & lived there for 6 months. There are pictures of the king everywhere & my Moroccan side of the family (through marriage) love the king & say how good he is to the people etc. Then I see beggars, litter & kids doing drugs & I mean very young kids. Loads of shantytowns & packs of stray dogs as well. Just so you know I'm not shitting on the country, I love Morocco but just curious to see if an alternative form of government would do a better job because as everybody seems to love the king & how helpful he is. I don't see it, like most countries, the money is kept in the capital, financial capital or tourist hotspots. Not for other areas of those cities that need money. Nevermind the areas out of the major cities

2023.03.29 12:44 kyrino- Relationship tags

So, I'm writing a story set in a dystopia where it is Very Illegal not to marry your soulmate. To get around the problems this causes, my aroace main character decides to only pretend to date his soulmate,(and agree with them before the marriage that no sex is going to be happening), thereby getting both the law and his annoying relatives of his back. The problem is, I don't know how to tag this. I could use the [Character & Character], fake dating, and platonic marriage tags, but there'll be other important characters and relationships as well, both platonic and romantic, so now I'm not sure how to indicate which two characters are doing the fake dating, specifically.

2023.03.29 12:42 Danknessness I got a couple of new buildings ideas I wanted to run by the community

First up a church, this could bring in a religious aspect into the game (and im not saying it should be based on an IRL religion) this building can then increase villagers mood when they attend it or have it present in the village. Second is a commune this will be a living area that can house more villagers, but without the opportunity to procreate this can help with unwanted children. Third is a watermill this would have to be built over a river or big enough stream and would essentially be a better version of the wood shed (and it would be really nice to see) Then last but not least is a dog house imagine having a fury friend accompanying you on your journey and that can even help with hunting

2023.03.29 12:42 Simple_Cod1960 (45m 48f) sacrificing happiness to do the right thing

I'm a 45 yr old guy. I've been with the same woman for 23 yrs and married for 21 yrs. The first 8 or 9 yrs were great, hard but I thought they were good. Apparently she didn't feel the same because around that time she started banging a mechanic she worked with. Found that out later but I suspected just couldn't prove it lt.
We moved away from that area and her relationship ended. What I didn't know was we were moving because her ex-husband was getting out of jail and she had intentions of getting back with him. Which she did and I found out before she could get her plan worked out.
We split for a bit and then she came asking me to take her back. I did. Only to find out she only did it because the ex was going back to jail.
We fought constantly over the next couple of yrs in a mostly sexless marriage. I was getting everything lined up to file for divorce.
All of the above is setting the stage for the next part which is where the real question is.
In Jan 2017 at 45 she had a major stroke. It damaged her brain and made her like a kid. She's slightly paralyzed on her right side but can walk albeit slowly with a cane. She can bath, dress, and feed herself. But she is basically my third child and I'm the care taker. The person she is now is not the same person she was.
That doesn't matter though because I'm not in love with her. I love her because you can't be with someone that long and not love them.
That said I'm not happy. I'm lonely and I want a new relationship. I'm 45 and I feel like my life is basically stuck. I don't resent her for how she, she can't help that. I am resentful over who she was and the time she stole from me. I never strayed from her, I never cheated, I feel like such a waste.
In the last 6 months or so I have tried my hand at dating and my unique situation makes things crazy hard. Most women think I'm lying or just have no desire to get involved in something so complicated. I'm not trying to get into a poly thing or be fwbs. I want something real and I want to be free to explore the relationship. I want to be able to invite someone over for dinner.
So I'm asking is doing the right thing worth sacrificing my happinesses? Is it worth giving up unknown yrs in a relationship that I'm not getting what I want out of. Am I a bad person because I want out? How the actual fuck do you tell a middle age child that depends on you for pretty much everything that your not gonna be that person anymore and still be able to look at yourself in the mirror everyday. Or look your kids in the eyes.
Then the question becomes where does she go? I can't afford to put her in a home. Her parents are passed on and her sister won't take her.
Fuck my life I swear.

2023.03.29 12:41 J0hn-Rambo The Sabbath – the fourth of the Ten Commandments

The seventh day Sabbath is God’s gift to humanity. It was blessed and sanctified by God after He had created the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them. It was written into the Ten Commandments by His finger, was kept, and taught by Jesus Christ, and was observed by the apostolic church. A memorial of both creation and redemption, it should be faithfully celebrated by believers now as a day of rest, worship, and well-doing.
Here’s where the Sabbath was first instituted by God:
“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” (Genesis 2:2)
Here God defines when a day commences and finishes, from evening to morning:
“And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” (Genesis 1:5)
Thus we are to keep the Sabbath from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday.
Here is the fourth commandment:
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:8-11)

2023.03.29 12:36 TheTiredTeacher04 Is couple's counseling worth it, when I feel like I can't bring it up?

The past years I have felt like my husband is putting in less and less effort with our family. If it doesn't have a direct benefit for him, he just won't do it. Whether it's driving the kids to a birthday party , or even just any kind of physical contact with me that doesn't result in bedroom activities. This past year has been the worst and it's gotten to a point where I'm considering two options: couple's counseling our divorce.
The thing is, I feel like I can't even bring up the thought of counseling, as every time I've brought up things I feel we need to work on in our marriage, he blows it off or gets angry or annoyed with me. The thought of talking to him about going to couple's counseling fills me with anxiety… is it worth it, or do you think I'm at a point where divorce truly is the best option?

2023.03.29 12:36 kruminater 31M from NC and recently divorced and realized I have no legit friends in life at the moment .

This is me making an attempt to make some friends. I’ve lived in NC 13yrs and I’m originally from PA. I was in the Marines in 2010 to 2014. Then I did 5yrs in the Army before becoming a cop for 2yrs (discovered that was not the job for me). I’m a mechanic now for Petroleum/ bulk fuel company. I like it a lot. It’s very laid back.
I enjoy some video games, play Xbox but don’t play often these days. Loss of interest I guess.
I also live at the beach, so the ocean is my happy place most of the year, toes in the sand and all. But I really enjoy swimming as it’s my number one pastime.
Out of all those years in government work, I have big a big firearms user and have over 15yrs of practice and exercise with them. I’m very proficient. It was a side hobby outside the military aspect. I go to church on Sundays but lately have found myself not going out so much to church and I think it’s depression really.
All of my family is in central PA and I’m far away. I’m also a father of 3 beautiful children who I love unconditionally.
I guess I’m saying all this in an attempt to see if someone can relate and would like to talk about things, life, vent or listen? I’m down to talk about just about anything. Hope you have a good mid week day too :)

2023.03.29 12:36 advice-throwaway4 UPDATE: Sister’s Husband is getting flirty and I feel like it’s my fault

Context: https://old.reddit.com/breakingmom/comments/119p4za/sisters_husband_is_getting_flirty_and_i_feel_like
I’ve seen my sister and her husband three times since my last post. I’ve continued to ignore or redirect all his attempts to flirt with me. The first two times were pretty much the same as before, but on Saturday he crossed a line and I don’t know what to do.
I was over at his/my sister’s house so my LO could have another playdate with theirs. I was in their kitchen (which is one of those skinny “galley” kitchens) prepping a snack for the kids, when he “innocently” put his hand on my back and said “pardon me” as he gently pushed past me to get something out of the fridge. I decided to take some advice from my previous post and said something like “You and must be a great team to be able to cook in this kitchen together.”
He laughed, and when he passed by me again on his way out of the kitchen, he grabbed both of my hips and pulled me back into him (so by butt was up against him). I don’t remember exactly what he said, but it was something along the lines of “we make it work.” I froze, and he just casually walked out of the kitchen like nothing happened.
I spent the rest of the play date as close to my sister as I could, and then went home. I haven’t talked to either of them since, and I don’t know how. I want to text him and say that he crossed a line, but I’m worried that will just make things blow up.
Why are so many guys like this? I’ve already lost so much, and now I feel like I might lose the support of my sister no matter how I try to handle things. Does he not realize that he’s risking his marriage?

2023.03.29 12:35 ThrowRAAeriedynamics I (F25) and my boyfriend (M28) of 3 months, said he doesn't love me yet because it's only been 3 months. Is he even over his ex?

Is that normal? He said it's only 3 months.
We were making out and I said we better be like this when we're 80. And he was like, "Coming and going, doing what I love with who I love." And I replied you love me? And he said he doesn't love me.
But at the same time, he keeps planning marriage and kids and talking about the future and he even put his engineering ring on my ring finger.
I think he's still not over his ex.
He brings up her uncle, her mom, and her height and compared it to mind.
He spent 4 years chasing after her after they broke up in 2nd year of university.
He still has a photo of her on his Facebook.
She's his first love.
He says he's still a virgin but I doubt it because he said she has daddy issues and they lived on the same floor in the first-year residence. I'm not naive.
He said it took him 6 months to say "I love you" to her.
I'm thinking no, he's not over her but I need other opinions.
Things were going so well and this is our first fight.
