Houston National Weather Service using ChatGPT openAI ??? I mean… it’s not wrong… but whoa!?
A wild ass storm out of nowhere exploded with energy in the greater Houston area this afternoon with crazy frontline winds at 50+ mph sustained for over 10 minutes. Many areas reported 70mph sustained… Trees, trash cans, trampolines, all over the place, on houses, in streets, and cars and power lines. Hailed a little. Rained….. A LOT! I mean, it really did rain hard af, but THAT MUCH!?
Either the meteorologist had nothing to work with because power to the weather stations were out, and had to make the best guess without being wrong, or likely has that fatter fingers of the alert system analyst team…. But I’m more convinced they’ve implemented a new AI Alert System Generator and this was its first one…. Lol. It just seems to fit so perfectly.
Any meteorologists in here? Whether it was AI or a real living human meteorologist… they gave the same type of answer… so weather needs out there like me…. If you still think you’re going to be a meteorologist one day. That ship has sailed. And apparently it was Noah’s Ark in Houston. 99 Inches!!!?

Anyone from the Houston area definitely felt this unbelievably wild ass storm pop up in the country and came in hot like it was madder than hell! No tornadoes, but ripping winds 50-70mph sustained, 1”-ish hail, and whole lot of sideways rain. Trees, fences, trampolines, trash cans, you name we’re strewn about all over, dented & dinged, and then apparently either drowned or floated all the way away. The rain was coming in so fast… the chatGPT AI alert writer was giving it its best guess, I guess. Or I mean the meteorologist nailed had to write something, but just knew one thing…. It’s gon rain!

2023.06.07 12:34 LeonLaLe Windy Weather Radar shows Poland with a circular radar like shape, why?

Hi, so since a few days ago I watch the Windy Weather radar because I see a Anomaly in the weather readings. I perceive it as a Radar like cone around 2 mayor points in Poland, I googled what I could be and came to the conclusion that it must be a Doppler-Lidar to get weather readings. The problem is that around middle Europe there is nowhere near a similar Anomaly like this. Normally it has a "natural" shape or not linear, like clouds are shaped.
Why is that so?

2023.06.06 20:05 ThogTheDestroyer Is there any chance that there will be a radar update for the tomcat?

I've been RIOing for a while now and since getting familiar with the cockpit and how to use everything I have noticed quite a few of the buttons and knobs with no function in the back seat like the radar filter settings. So does Heatblur have any plan to implement some of those that seem more feasible? It's seeming like the module is getting close to leaving early access but I think it would be fun to be able to mess around and get the most out of the pulse and pulse doppler modes

2023.06.04 03:18 SystemSettings1990 Storms normally move West to East, but why have storms in Wisconsin withinthe last week or so moved from East to West

Here is photo with a storm track moving east. This might be a stupid question with an obvious answer but, over the last few days or so, or maybe week almost every storm that was developing in my area (Wisconsin) started in the East and went West. It’s been very hot and humid so lots of storms just pop up. What is the cause for this change in direction? Another example is if you watch a radar loop of today over Nebraska, all the storms move west.

2023.06.03 11:42 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Border To Tears by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (06/02/23)

"A couple very good guys wrote an article today, the tobacco king, you the tobacco king..." - Disgraced former president Donald Trump doing some classic word salad during his Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity

Law And Border

Some variation on “CHAOS AT THE BORDER” is a staple phrase in the Fox News chyron. But the source of that chaos is not who they want you to think it is.
This is far from the first report of this kind detailing inhumane treatment of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.
President Biden, like President Obama before him, made a wager: that tough border policies and deportations will buy good will from conservatives or neutralize their bad-faith attacks. Except, it didn’t, and it won’t. Conservative media and GOP lawmakers will always portray Democratic presidents, falsely, as open-borders fanatics, no matter how strict their actual immigration policies are. Multiple GOP governors thousands of miles from the border have deployed national guardsmen to Texas, absent a big uptick in crossings, as a propaganda feint, to create the false perception of disorder. Democrats can’t beat that approach by meeting it in the ever-shifting middle, and they shouldn’t try.

Look No Further Than Crooked Media

It’s Pride month, and the Crooked Store has a whole collection of merch to help you celebrate and fight back against the total freaks obsessed with what we wear and where we put it. The collection has everything from tees to bags, so you can stock up. I’m not going to tell you how to celebrate Pride, but I will say that if you don’t ruin at least one article of clothing this month, you could be doing more. So grab an extra tee.
Plus, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Crooked’s Fuck Bans fund, which supports organizations working to protect vulnerable people on the ground in states that are banning care and targeting trans youth. You get the thrill of supporting organizers combined with the thrill of buying something online. It’s a win-win.
Head to https://crooked.com/store to check out the whole Pride collection.

Under The Radar

A series of investigations found that Allina Health System, a “nonprofit” that runs more than 100 hospitals and clinics in Minnesota and Wisconsin has repeatedly withheld care from patients who have unpaid medical bills as a draconian bill-collecting tactic. The network rakes in over $4 billion in annual revenue. In the for-profit American healthcare system, many hospitals are known to take aggressive measures to collect medical debt, including taking patients to court, garnishing their wages, or even seizing their tax refunds. Allina Health System, on the other hand, has an explicit policy to completely shut off non-emergency health services for patients with at least $4,500 in unpaid medical debt, and not allow them to resume receiving treatment until it’s paid off in full. At point, the electronic health-records system locks so that staff cannot schedule future appointments for those patients, even ones with chronic conditions requiring regular attention like diabetes and cancer. That confronts those patients with a choice between getting a loan approved through the hospital or filing for bankruptcy. Anyone in this country who has ever been on the wrong side of a health-insurance dispute knows how easy it is to rack up $4,500 in medical debt. Almost one-in-three Americans have medical debt, which accounts for about half of all outstanding debt in this country. Because Allina Health System is a “nonprofit” it was able to avoid $266 million in state, local, and federal taxes in 2020 alone. Another perfect day in the American health-care industrial complex!

What Else?

The Department of Labor’s monthly jobs report showed the 29th straight month of strong job growth, with employers adding 339,000 jobs in May.
The U.S. Senate passed the bipartisan ransom note to suspend the debt limit, averting what would have been the nation’s first-ever default. The bill now heads to President Biden’s desk for signature.
The Senate voted to rescind President Biden’s student-loan forgiveness program, a measure the president is (obviously) expected to veto.
YouTube will reverse its election-integrity policy, and allow election-denial videos on the platform. Great! I love when corporations sacrifice democracy to extract just a little bit more profit.
Disgraced former president Donald Trump’s lawyers have informed the DOJ that they can’t find the classified document about military operations in Iran that Trump was recorded referencing. Very likely story!
The Justice Department will not seek charges against former Vice President Mike Pence for his possession of potentially classified government documents, and the investigation has been closed.
The Fulton County, GA, District Attorney’s investigation of disgraced former president Donald Trump and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election has expanded to include activities in Washington, DC, and several other states.
More than 800 million trees have been cut down in the Amazon rainforest in just the past six years to meet global beef demand.
Gov. Bill Lee (R-TN) accused the National Rifle Association of seeking to use involuntary commitment laws “to round up mentally ill people and deprive them of other liberties,” a rare criticism of the NRA from a Republican.
An investigation into child sexual-abuse claims in Spain’s Catholic Church found 728 abusers among members of the clergy and non-clerical staff and 927 victims since the 1940’s.
A 19-year-old in the United Kingdom who converted to extremist Islam during the pandemic and planned to carry out a terrorist attack was given six years in prison.
The Canadian province of Nova Scotia is experiencing its worst-ever wildfire season, with more than 200 so far this year.

Be Smarter

The Discord disclosures of highly classified national security documents by former Massacheusetts Air National Guardsman/racist freak Jack Teixeira contain one particularly startling revelation: Iran, according to U.S. intelligence, plan to enlist militants in Syria to step up roadside attacks against U.S. military personnel, including through the use of armor-piercing munitions. The escalation is reportedly part of a broader strategic effort between Iran and Russia to drive the U.S. from the region (don’t threaten us with a good time!) but could also lead to escalating hostilities between the U.S. and Iran—and just in time for the Republican presidential primary, which will be chockablock with bloodthirsty war hawks who would happily exploit carnage in the region to revamp the GOP push for war.

2023.06.01 00:09 johnfrancispaul Has anyone SkyTrak+ units shipped? I ordered mine the day after it was announced and mine has not.

The GolfTec customer support is useless. They actually complain to me (their paying customer of three years) that they have thousands of units to ship and that there is no way for them to tell me when I will receive it. They say this despite the fact their website still says as of 5/31/23 :"Your SkyTrak+ will ship in LATE MAY (capitalization by GolfTec)". See image attached.
Curious whether anyone else who has placed an order has heard anything? I am frankly frustrated with the lack of communication. Thinking about cancelling and ordering a Full Swing or BLP.

2023.05.31 21:57 IloveGraceKelly Project feasibility - Police Speed Gun

Hi everyone,
I am currently a rising senior majoring in computer engineering. I wasn't able to secure an internship this summer so I wanted to come up with ideas for projects.
One of my project ideas is creating a police speed gun that uses LIDAR to measure the speed at which a vehicle is moving. I was thinking of buying a LIDAR sensor to measure the vehicles speed and using a microcontroller to perform the logic of calculating the speed and displaying it onto an LCD screen. I know I could also use a doppler radar sensor to also to measure speed, but I want to know if this is possible with LIDAR sensors.
These are some of the LIDAR sensors I was thinking of using:
TF03 Long-Distance LiDAR Module (100m)
LIDAR-Lite v3HP
LIDAR-Lite v3
I know the range and accuracy of the gun is going to be significantly worse than an actual police speed gun due to the LIDAR sensor. Despite this, would this project be possible to implement with the given sensors to some degree? I appreciate all the responses.

2023.05.30 03:16 HandStitchedBody Resources related to the May 31, 2013 El Reno Tornado

With the upcoming 10-year anniversary of El Reno May 31, 2013 here are some links to videos and articles about or related to this event, with a focus more on the science, as well as footage links so they can all be in one place for anyone looking. This is by no means remotely exhaustive, and will not include the numerous documentaries or news articles about this event.
Rest in peace to the eight people killed by the tornado and the 13 others who died due to storm related flooding. You can read more about them in the NWS StoryMaps linked at the bottom. Will specifically mention here that five of the eight killed by the tornado were storm chasers. Veteran chasers Paul Samaras, Tim Samaras and Carl Young, amateur chaser Richard Henderson and another unnamed chaser who was only discovered later to have been chasing that day through the work of the El Reno Survey project. You can read a post about that by Skip Talbot here.

Old Stormtrack thread that Jeff Snyder participated in. Both this thread and Doswell's writings above were from 2013 so other things have since been gleaned from this event, but both contain most if not all of the more informed reasons for the argument around the rating. Snyder wrote the paper linked above about considerations for using mobile radar in determining tornado intensity the following year.
Adding the Current Proposed Revision to the EF Scale since a lot of those more organized discussions seemed to have stemmed from this event.
(note: I enjoy the science involved in aspects of the rating, but personally find the ratings themselves boring and uninformative as they merely simplify something very complex into a metric (that then is reduced even further into wind speeds) that a lot of times just seem to operate as a function of competition and/or morbid destruction allure. In general reducing everything involved in a tornado to a static thing with defined borders and simplified properties isn't helpful in understanding all the forces themselves or in understanding the complex way those forces interact with everything around them. I recommend reading the damage survey and discussion links above to help understand the reasoning given for this particular rating and the science of the considerations around radar indicated speeds and tornadic intensity along with some more well thought out arguments against the rating this event was given. If for no other reason than to move away from more common subjective-bias based arguments ("i know a huge EF5 when i see one" "obviously from the footage it was a massive wedge EF5 world destroyer") and in to more informed discussions if they must happen.)
VIDEO
Synced: El Reno Sync and El Reno Sync. Neither of course contain all the footage but are especially good to watch just so you can see how radically different it looked at different times depending on where the person was. The second one has a minor sync error that is noted in the pinned comment. Definite major acknowledgement for these syncs goes to the El Reno Survey Project and their Tornado Environmental Display (which sadly seems to no longer function).
Footage: A lot of people's footage can be found on the El Reno Survey Participants page by clicking on the links under the video column, so i won't link those here. Some participants aren't listed or their footage isn't linked and others may not have participated or have posted additional footage so I'll link other unlisted footage I am aware of below. Also note that Pecos Hank's footage is listed under his name (Hank Schyma) in the above link.

Following Donald Trump's narrow win over Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Republican primary, the election begins to mirror many of the same aspects of the 2020 race yet in the aftermath of former President Trump's election denial and the following January 6th riot, tentions reach a new high. Allong with this, voter dissatisfaction reached a new high itself.
Embattled by legal disputes Donald Trump spends a large part of the campaign in cout often making his campaign tours about his eledged mistreatment of by the justice system, rather than focusing on major issues that resonated with the majority of Americans, such as the economy, allowing many of Biden's more divisive actions to fly under the radar. While this strategies electrified Trump's base, it dose little to encourage democrats, moderates, and suburbanites.
Joe Biden for his part attempts to appeal to working class voters while continuing his previous campaign strategie of "upholding democracy" casting the Trump campaign as opposed to democratic principles.
On election Night Joe Biden takes home a solid victory, building a coalition of college educated whites, blacks, and suburbanites who filp Democratic in 2024. The Biden campaign celeibates, on the other hand Trump of course denies the legitimacy of the election. The subsequent occupations and protests at election centers by Trump supporters, as well as a varriety of low level officials holding up the certification process in Arizona, Wisconsin, and Georgia, holds up the certification of the elections for months On July 23, 2026 Kamala Harris is sworn in as President becoming the first female US.
